Nothing really grows in Midgar and surrounding presumably because of the whole mako extraction from the earth, correct?

Does that mean soil for growing plants has to be imported from Kalm? It also mean all of Midgars food supply has to be imported.

Angeal is into plants, meaning he begrudgingly pays for pretty expensive mako rich soil.

Imagine there is some secret gardening technique where you put Materia into the soil to revitalise it.

started the original final fantasy seven. everyone is SO MISOGYNISTIC??? i said i was scared when i was going to fall off of a FREAKING MAKO REACTOR (#5, if it wasn't obvious) and barret told me to "stop crying like a girl" OH MY GOD?? YOU DO IT??!!! YOU HANG OFF THE EDGE AND DON'T BE SCARED??!!! WHAT.

also i HATE this weird tifa-aerith beef. i DEFINITELY prefer whatever they have going on in the remake continuity. please stop bullying each other. please stop asking if i'm dating one or the other. i don't even. care.

but also i LOVE all the details that are like, wow, this was a piece of the background. you made this a two hour gimmick. (this is about those fucking robot hands in sector six.)

I just wanna say I love the kanji for Midgar:

御土我留 (みっどがる)

御 = mi = honorable, or to manipulate, or govern

土 = do = earth

我 = ga = oneself, ego

留 = ru = stop or stay

御 is like THE honorific particle. You see/hear this everywhere. To sound polite and grammatically correct, this gets added in front of countless words (お金 o-kane, ご覧 go-ran, お茶 o-cha, etc.) Much more commonly it is pronounced “o” or “go”. Usually it is also not written in kanji but in hiragana.

土 just means earth or soil. It’s also part of the word 土曜日 doyoubi, Saturday, and 土星 dosei, Saturn.

我 - I always think of old men when I see this word 😂 because they always use it to refer to themselves. You’ll often hear this in its plural form, 我が waga - ours, or 我々wareware - us. By itself 我 ga, it means the self or ego.

留 is always pronounced ru/ryuu and means “stop” or “stay”. It’s in the word 留学生ryuugakusei, foreign exchange student, and 留守 rusu, away from home.

So it’s kind of like its own little sentence, something like “The Honorable Earth Upon Which We Reside”😅 (edit: Or, even more simply, “We live on earth”) which is kind of close to the original meaning of Midgard, Middle Earth, anyway. Very cool, Square 😎

Wild really do be travelling. I had entirely to much fun editing him into this backgrounds and adding torch glow for the asthetics.

So I'm Exhausted but on bright side I got holiday gift shopping done early, got a few snacks for later, and got a big sucker burrito for lunch.

And overthinking again on what kind of food is accessible to various fictional characters.

Wish:

Rosas has anachronistic french pastries and sugar-glazed lemon cookies. Do they have other time-breaking foodstuffs? Would they have pizza or would it be too greasy for them? Is there a preferences for seafood given they're an island kingdom? Do they like goat milk cheese (CAN they digest dairy to begin with)? What animals on the island raised for meat? We know the kitchen has a bunch of chickens for eggs so we do know they likely also consume birdmeat. Are their staple diets predominantly one culture or is it a chaotic hodgepodge of assorted cuisines from around the Mediterranean?

Final Fantasy 7:

I had this long weird discussion and commentary on how Midgar handles food with friends a few years back because they can't grow flowers and the area around Midgar is an actual wasteland where only ghost-like monsters seem to thrive. How far do they have to bring food in from and how stupidly high are the prices? How much artificial and instant-mash goop are the people living above and below plate forced to rely on? I've seen bugmeal in IRL organic sustainable stores, is there a cultural divide between people who grew up Below Plate and Above Plate on if bugmeal is a culinary option? Or is it Above Plate that has less access to fresher meat because everything gets priced out of range to just the executives of Shinra itself? Then there's other areas, whether their cultures are fantasy nods to Japan, China, Scandinavia, Germany, Spain, or more.

I could keep going but my burrito is falling apart.

It leaves a bad taste in my mouth that Shinra technically save the world with the power of Mako Reactors. Granted they also made Sephiroth in the first place so it's still on their heads but still.

Thinking about how there are probably a plethora of abandoned pets in the slums. Like upper plate people take their unwanted animals down there and leave them. I like to imagine Aerith would definitely always have clean water bowls in the church for any animal and has a name for every stray dog, cat, bird, ferret and any other stray.
