Clearlake Institute was hiding something!
Deep beneath the shadows, something sinister was brewing - darkened halls, strange doctors, ghastly nurses that watch your every move, and children who are sent into Room 217 never to return.
Aided by the other children she meets at the institute, Moon Rains embarks on a perilous, suspenseful adventure to uncover the secrets of the Clearlake Institute.
Now, the race against time begins. Will Moon and her friends make it out before it’s too late? Or will Clearlake claim them as its next set of victims?

Excerpt
There will come a time when you wonder, how did a girl like me end up in a place like Clearlake and mortal danger? Well, it all started with a terrible cold. At first, it was just a blocked nose. Then a sore throat, nothing major. About a week later, I got a temperature. And the blocked nose got worse. Much worse. I lost all sense of smell and the ability to breathe. Snot kept trickling down from my nostril to my top lip, and I had to persistently wipe it off with my sleeve or taste the said snot. I had a headache. A constant, nagging, relentless headache as if a woodpecker was incessantly pecking above the bridge of my nose.
I was thirteen at the time and missed so many days of school that my mother got fined by the government. Now, I know what you’re thinking - any responsible parent would have taken their offspring to a GP if the wretched illness hadn’t gone away within a week. Well, not my mother.
My mother didn’t trust Western Medicine, you see, particularly vaccines and antibiotics. As far as she was concerned, those two were the source of all evil. I count myself incredibly lucky that, so far, I have managed to avoid catching something particularly nasty like Rubella, Mumps, or Measles. I’ve never had anything more severe than a cold, in fact. And while most colds went away without intervention, other than a honey, lemon and gin concoction (which was surprisingly effective, never mind that I was far too young to take it), this cold proved to be something else entirely.
About a week in, my mother marched into my room early in the morning. Loud, insistent stomps woke me up from a hazy, feverish dream. She touched my forehead with the tips of her fingers and raised her eyebrow, nodding as if everything was going according to plan.
“Well, I think I know what will finally do the trick,” she said.
I rolled my eyes. Well, not actually. Not on the outside. The outside she could see. I rolled my eyes on the inside, imagining them going so far inside their sockets that all that was left were the white bits.
“Beetroot!” she exclaimed, her voice chiming like a Christmas bell.
“Beetroot?” I yawned, and a few tears seeped out of the corners of my eyes. I wasn’t sure if the yawn caused it or the ever-escalating feeling of utter desperation.
“A few drops of beetroot juice inside your nose three times a day, and you will be good as new. I promise.”
She made similar promises a lot.
“If you stick a clove of garlic in each nostril overnight, in the morning… Poof. Cured. Gone. I promise.”
“Breathing over a pot with hot potatoes and a duvet over your head will open up the sinuses and unleash the phlegm. All of the gunk will stream out. You’ll see. I promise.”
“If you do a wee in a little pot and then take some of that wee with a little pipette that I’ve got here for you and…”
“NO!”
I drew the line at urotherapy, as it was apparently called, and it did take quite a bit of courage to stand up to my mother. She fussed and fretted but couldn’t get me to administer urine into my nose.

It’s another entry in #mybookalphabet! Today’s was a tricky one, as I don’t have many character names or story elements that begin with this letter. But then I remembered Orien, the well-respected governor of Tarreton College, whose untimely death kicks off the plot of A POCKET FULL OF MURDER. . At the beginning of POCKET, Master Orien, the governor of the prestigious Tarreton College, has just offered Isaveth’s hard-working but unemployed Papa a job that could save him and his four daughters from destitution. All seems well until the Lawkeepers turn up at the door, and arrest Urias Breck as the prime suspect in Orien’s murder. . Isaveth knows her father has no motive to kill Master Orien — in fact the opposite — but nobody else seems to believe that he didn’t do it. So she sets out to find the real murderer before it’s too late. In the excerpt I’ve included, she disguises herself as a maid at Tarreton College so she can investigate the scene of the crime, and also get a chance to talk to Orien’s proud and rather prickly secretary about who else visited the Master that day and what really happened. . In many of the Golden Age mystery novels that inspired POCKET and its sequel, the murder victim is a deeply unpleasant person who seems to have earned his or her grisly fate. But real life is seldom so neat or satisfying, and I wanted to explore the impact of a good man’s death on the people left to mourn him — including a couple of characters who turn out to have been somewhat closer to Orien than my heroine Isaveth ever guessed… . If you enjoy reading mysteries, which case or detective have you found the most memorable, and why? . . . #uncommonmagic #apocketfullofmurder #middlegrade #middlegradebooks #middlegradereads #middlegradefiction #middlegradefantasy #middlegrademystery #middlegradelit #mglit #bookstagram #books #booknerd #booklover #bookstagrammer #bookworm #bookwormlife https://www.instagram.com/p/B_V9QxIgC0d/?igshid=1oi6mded1b0bk

Day 30/100 #the100dayproject I didn’t have a lot of time today because I had old friends to visit, a lunch date out with my husband, and sunshine to soak in before the rains start again. So I indulged in a little of my old #scrapbooking to display some of the #middlegradebooks I’ve been studying, enjoying, and often getting lost in. I’m looking forward to continuing all these series. So many talented #writers here. I’ve learned so much. #illustratedlifejournal #thechroniclesofneverafter #melissadelacruz #thewinterhousemysteries #benguterson #thelandofstories #chriscolfer #thejumbies #traceybaptiste #studyingmiddlegradebooks #twistedfairytales #folktales #mythology #middlegradefantasy #middlegrademystery https://www.instagram.com/p/CqMlP0ZAcYp/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A gorgeous #CoverReveal for Flip Turns by Catherine Arguelles Flux - @jollyfishpress 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: After 13-year-old Maddie tells Lucas she doesn’t want to date him, a string of vandalism breaks out at her family’s community pool. Worried it’s her “admirer” getting even, Maddie and her friend, Ez, launch their own investigation. 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿’𝘀 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿- In FLIP TURNS, 13-year old Maddie is solving more than one mystery! She's unraveling the case of who's vandalizing her family's community pool, but she's also working through the complications of how to get one boy to leave her alone, and how to have a crush on another one, as well as dealing with friendships and swim races and managing her anxiety. I love how the cover artist shows Maddie's confused and curious emotions so clearly on her face and in the way she's holding the unwanted snow globe. I also love how the colors and design of the cover just feels like summer! Ah! I love this post of THE PRINCESS & THE PAGE so much! Thank you @bellesmiddlegrade for this gorgeous picture! Made with@make_repost ・・・ This is one I thought I had gotten forever ago(because I first saw it forever ago, wanted it, & thought I got it lol), but when I went to look for it-nope. Didn’t have it lol So I rectified that immediately. It sounds absolutely incredible. Such a STUNNING cover by one of my favorites @paacart as well!💜 Synopsis: A dark secret lurks in Keira's family. She comes from a long line of Word Weavers who bring their stories to life when they use a magical pen. But Keira's mom is unable to face the truth of the family's history because the Word Weavers have been hunted for generations for their power. And so, she forbids Keira to write. Oblivious to the family's secret ability, and angry at her mom's rule of no fictional writing, Keira discovers her grandma's Word Weaver pen and uses it to write a story for the Girls' World fairy tale contest, believing it will bring her good luck. But when Keira decides to have her fairy tale reflect her family's imperfect life, and has the princess in her story vanquished to a dark tower for eternity, she starts to wonder if anyone ever truly lives happily ever after. #theprincessandthepage #christinafarley #peturantonsson #scholasticpress #scholastic #scholasticbooks #middlegrade #middlegradebooks #middlegradereads #middlegradeillustration #middlegradecovers #middlegradefiction #middlegradefantasy #middlegradefairytale #middlegrademystery #middlegradeadventure #middlegradebooksaboutbooks #middlegradewriting #mgbooks #mgbookstagram #middlegradebookstagram #mgbook #ireadmg #middlegradebooksuggestions #bookstagram #booksuggestions #books #booknerd #bookrecommendations #booklover @christinalfarley @scholasticinc https://www.instagram.com/p/CWk_6riLrE7/?utm_medium=tumblr

From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg This is one of those books that I thought MAYBE I read as a kid cause the premise sounded familiar but reading it as an adult I realize I probably missed this one as a child. This book was delightful. It was an adventure of two kids "running away" and living in the Met for a week. There was a mystery surrounding a piece of artwork and an old eccentric white lady documenting it all. I don't read a ton of middle grade books but I picked this one up as a suggestion for the "Middle Grade Mystery" prompt for the Book Riot Read Harder 2021 challenge. I can see why it's a classic that people want to share with their children. I'm thinking I'll read this one to my girls. #bookriotreadharderchallenge2021 #middlegradebooks #middlegrademystery #readingprompts #newberryawardwinner #booknerd #librarybook #nerdymama #nerdybooks #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CQcqJHFL5ct/?utm_medium=tumblr

I loved @lilliamr’s second Goldie Vance novel every bit as much as the first. Possibly even more, since I was able to actually pick up on some of the clues—something I am rarely able to do with mysteries—and the spotlight on Goldie and Diane’s budding relationship. I also enjoyed seeing Goldie’s rivalry with another teen detective, and was glad it didn’t go down the well-worn path of her having to prove herself to her friends. At this point, I’m fine with Goldie in both prose and comics—and hopefully someday in the long-promised TV series—as long as we get more. And I honestly would be very excited to see a comics story by Lilliam Rivera, based on how she handles the short comics segments in these novels. #thismakesmehappy #books #2021reading #middlegradebooks #middlegrademystery #mysteries #goldievance #goldievancethehocuspocushoax #hocuspocushoax #magic #magicians #comics #lilliamrivera https://www.instagram.com/p/CKUJmMCpogg/?igshid=182lk001nh7ck

Incredibly grateful for this review. This is where I get most of my "to read" books. Thank you!🙏🙏🙏 Reposted from @bellesmiddlegrade This was for my 2nd prompt for #atouchofwhimsyreadathon for an aesthetically pleasing book. This is definitely that! Not only on the outside, but inside!! It is FILLED w/beautiful illustrations on almost every page! So stunning. The author is also the illustrator, & the talent on that level just blows me away!!😍😍 This was such a great book! The story was fascinating!! My only complaint is it wasn’t long enough!😆I need more, ESPECIALLY after that ending!😳I love a good sibling story, & Alex & Emma were awesome! This seemed like a true depiction of how siblings actually are. They were so different, & disagreed & argued. But when the chips were down, they were there for each other, or doing everything in their power to find/help one another. I found the backstory of the magical world they enter so interesting! It’s so hard to know who they can trust in this world, but they know for sure they can’t trust the Shadow Conjurer or his Rag-O-Roc’s-which were both SO CREEPY!! While it’s hard to tell if we can fully trust Nelil & Clive-I LOVED THEM! Lol they were so amazingly written, & I could see them vividly in my mind-just like I could everything in the book. They were so great. Pimawa has my whole heart! I love him!🐇 I can’t wait to see more from Savachia. I think he is a great character, & can bring a lot to the series, & w/Emma. This was such a great adventure! I can’t wait for the 2nd book! Highly recommend!!Synopsis in comments!!💜💜 #riseoftheshadow #theconjurers #theconjurersriseoftheshadow #briananderson #middlegrade #middlegradebooks #middlegradereads #middlegradeillustration #middlegradecovers #middlegradefiction #middlegradefantasy #middlegrademagic #middlegrademystery #middlegradefantasyseries #middlegradelit #mglit #mgbooks #mgbookstagram #bookstagram #books #booknerd #booklover #bookstagrammer #bookworm #adventuresthroughwonderlandreadathon @stimolaliterarystudio @randomhousekids @alexandra_roselyn @gavgav7 @kalynabridged https://www.instagram.com/p/CE7HWHgBwRK/?igshid=1kj13m3p314zm

The next letter in #mybookalphabet is a vitally important character from A POCKET FULL OF MURDER, even though we don’t see that much of him in the story — Isaveth’s beloved Papa, Urias Breck. . Like the other names in the Breck family and in the Moshite community to which they belong, Urias’s name is a modified version of an old Biblical name, that of Uriah the Hittite. Uriah was a faithful soldier under King David, known for his loyalty, integrity and courage — but when King David wanted Uriah’s wife Bathsheba for his own, he arranged to have Uriah put on the front lines of the battle so he would be killed. In a similar way (though for very different motives), Isaveth’s honest and hardworking father becomes an innocent scapegoat, accused of a murder he didn’t commit. . The quote in this image carousel comes from early in the book when Urias is arrested and dragged off to prison, leaving Isaveth and her three sisters alone. Unlike her older sister Annagail, who works long hours in a shirt factory to help support their family, twelve-year-old Isaveth is too young to have a full-time job — but not too young to realize that she can’t depend on Tarreton’s corrupt political and legal system to clear her Papa’s name. If anyone’s going to find the real murderer and prove Urias’s innocence, it has to be Isaveth herself… . . . #uncommonmagic #apocketfullofmurder #middlegrade #middlegradebooks #middlegradereads #middlegrademarch #middlegrademarch2020 #middlegradefiction #middlegradefantasy #middlegrademystery #middlegradelit #mglit #bookstagram #books #booknerd #booklover #bookstagrammer #bookworm https://www.instagram.com/p/B-XufvPAk3q/?igshid=1vz8tnagc8o86

First I listened to #fins by #randywaynewhite because #sharkweek was coming plus I have a middle grade novel brewing in my head so I thought I’d study some #middlegradebooks I got completely sucked to the world of these 3 kids that become #sharksinc I also loved all the educational stuff woven into the story. I quickly finished Fins and moved onto the other two my library offered #stingers and #crocs and loved them just as much as the first. These #books are wonderful and if you have a kid fascinated by the ocean and everything in its depths, these would be perfect. #readthisbook #sharksincseries #bookstagram #bookgeek #bookworm #booknerd #bookish #bibliophile #bookaddict #bookaholic #bibliotherapy #educationalbooks #middlegrademysteries #readersofinstagram #read #reading #audiobooks https://www.instagram.com/p/CgfRa9dP-_F/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
