Remembering the genius of Michel Petrucciani on his birthday.
(English / Español / Italiano)
His passion for music, laughter, love, and life never wavered, even as he endured constant suffering. In the beautiful documentary Non Stop, we see the prodigious artist in moments of joy, traveling through Paris, New York, and California with filmmaker Roger Willemsen, capturing his unique spirit. Petrucciani’s playing combined the lyricism of Keith Jarrett, the virtuosity of Oscar Peterson, and a touch of raw intensity all his own. As his friend Wayne Shorter said, “Michel never looked in the mirror to complain about what he saw… he was exceptional because he could transmit what he felt.”

Lee Konitz: The Eternal Innovator of Jazz
Introduction: The jazz world is filled with instrumentalists who have left indelible marks on the genre, but few have maintained the breadth of creative exploration throughout their careers like Lee Konitz. Born ninety-seven years ago today on October 13, 1927, in Chicago, Konitz became one of the most influential alto saxophonists in jazz history. He was a central figure in the birth of cool…

Michel Petrucciani (1962 - 1999)

Today in New York: the Village Vanguard
The Village has been the birthplace of many renowned jazz artists, and it continues to be a destination of choice for those seeking to experience great jazz music. The Village Vanguard is one of the most renowned and oldest jazz clubs in the city, offering exceptional live music in a intimate atmosphere since 1935.
History that you can beat around the ears of the bartender, maybe not. Better to just order a good whisky .
mod
The Village Vanguard opened its doors on 22 February 1935. Founder Max Gordon opened the club in the basement of a wedge-shaped building on the corner of Seventh Avenue and Waverly Place. It initially provided a stage for a wide range of artists, including folk musician Pete Seeger, whose band The Weavers were the Vanguard's first employees, and the then-unknown singer Harry Belafonte. In August 1949, Mary Lou Williams played the first jazz concert there; her group shared the stage with J. C. Heard's band. From 1957, the Vanguard became a pure jazz club. The Vanguard's artists soon included musicians such as Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Art Blakey.
While the clubs on 52nd Street and Birdland on Broadway closed their doors from the mid-1960s onwards, the Vanguard remained a well-known jazz venue in New York. After Max Gordon's death in 1989, his wife Lorraine took over the business and ran it until her death in June 2018. Since then, her daughter Deborah has taken over the club.

Writing chapter two, and I am very pleased to write a character (obviously on the antagonistic side of the narration) who is utterly disgusted and revolted by what in those times was deemed as “deformity”. Because, actually, this is an underrepresented trait in villainy (and characters)! This character (who I will not name here) was the son of a doctor and grew up seeing all sorts of people coming to his father with chronic diseases and various ailings, making him disgusted at the thought of the fragility of the flesh; but “deformity” (being this mental illness or albinism, for example) to him is particularly revolting. And he lives in a boarding school with Barnabas (who has albinism), and he has such a hatred towards him that the very Barnabas described as “like a man so disgusted of a cockroach he cannot crush it with his bare hands”. Said character is so disgusted, so horrified by this that he cannot see Barnabas past his condition, and develops and obsessive mislike towards him that may be dangerous. This was an spontaneous decision, and part of it was inspired by real life experience, when I was looking at a video of a famed pianist Michel Petrucciani (legendary for being polyrhythmic) alongside my grandma, who was very uncomfortable with him having dwarfism and asked me to put other stuff. This mislike for people with a condition to the point of reducing them to a demonised version of such condition is something many people have in their mindsets, and I wanted to explore the darkest part of it with this character.

Happy Birthday Michel.
(English / Español / Italiano)
It is night and the city is silent, but from a lit window a piano can be heard. But it is not just any piano, it is that of the amazing Michel Petrucciani, who would have turned 62 today, and that sound is an investigation into the soul, a journey through the mysteries of the heart.
Petrucciani, an inspiration to follow, a man as fragile as porcelain, yet capable of playing with the power of a storm and the delicacy of a whisper. A giant who turned his condition into a reason to fly higher, and succeeded more than any other person.
He lived each note as if it were his last, each melody as a confession. His piano was a closed-door interrogation, where he confessed the beauty of life, pain, love, irony. It was jazz that he breathed, drank, ate.
Today we miss his music like air, but if we close our eyes, there he is, our Michel. A pianist who did not play to escape life, but to go deeper into it, to solve its mysteries.
Best wishes immense Michel, wherever you are. Your music continues to enlighten us, like that window lit in the middle of the night! listen here
