CBC/Radio-Canada's executive vice-president of French services is apologizing for travelling to Florida last month despite the federal government strongly warning against non-essential travel during the pandemic.
Michel Bissonnette, who oversees French-language television, radio and digital content for the public broadcaster, owns property in Miami and stayed there Dec. 2 to Dec. 27. He both worked and vacationed while south of the border, said Radio-Canada spokesperson Marc Pichette in an email.
The story was first reported on by the National Post Thursday morning.

IL PLEUVAIT DES OISEAUX en tête des nominations du Gala Québec Cinéma 2020
Tumblr media

Senior Vice-President of Radio-Canada | Michel Bissonnette still has things to change
Senior Vice-President of Radio-Canada | Michel Bissonnette still has things to change
In the new “house” of Radio-Canada, the workspaces are open plan. I had been told that everyone, without exception, lived in these common areas found on each floor. I admit that I had a little doubt. I told myself that the big bosses should benefit from a closed office. Posted at 8:15 a.m. What was my surprise to see Michel Bissonnette, senior vice-president of Radio-Canada, seated behind a…

Books Read in 2017
I really don’t know what else to say at this point. Other than I toned it down a bit from last year. ;)
OH actually: I noticed I was being a failure at listing the illustrators of graphic novels. So I’ll try to do that from now on. Canadians held vigils across the country Monday in a show of solidarity with the nations Muslim communities and to mourn the victims of a shooting at the Quebec City Islamic Cultural Center.
The attack during evening prayers Sunday nightkilled six people and left eight wounded. It is one of the worst mass shootings in Canadas history.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and local government officials attended a vigil a block from the Quebec City mosque. Thousands gathered in Montreal at vigils near the citys Parc and St. Michel metro stations.
We stand with you, we love you and we support you. And we will always defend and protect your right to gather together and pray, today and every day, Trudeau saidin Quebec City. Muslim Canadians are valued members of every community, and wherever they live they deserve to feel welcome and safe. They are home here.
Events were also planned at Parliament Hill in the nations capital, Ottawa, and in the cities of Vancouver, Calgary and Halifax, among others. Flags were lowered at city halls around the country, and Canadians left flowers at multiple mosques to express support.
In Canadas largest city, Toronto, residents held a candlelight vigil and walk for the victims of the attack. Earlier Monday, hundreds demonstrated outsidethe U.S. Consulate in Toronto to oppose President Donald Trumps ban on Syrian refugees and travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries. The protest also expressed sympathy for the victims of the Quebec shooting, organizers said.
Canadas less populated northern territories, too, held vigils to condemn the attacks and mourn. A midday rally outside the remote city of Iqaluits only mosque, in the territory of Nunavut, drew dozens of people.
Similar vigils were planned for the northern cities of Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories and Yukons capital of Whitehorse.

Terrorist attacks and mass shootings are relatively rare in Canada, and the killings have shocked many citizens in a country that supports diversity and tolerance. Muslim community leaders condemned the attack Monday and said that Canadians must confront Islamophobia, something anti-discrimination activists have previously warned is a growing issue in Quebec.
Trudeau described the shooting as a terrorist attack on Muslims and pledged his support for victims and all Muslim Canadians in a statement Sunday. Numerous officials in cities and provinces around Canada also issued statements of condolences, and major party leaders echoed Trudeaus calls to stand by the countrys Muslim population.
Police arrested Alexandre Bissonnette, a French-Canadian university student, in connection with the attack. Authorities declined to speculate on possible motives. The mosque had been the target of an Islamophobic incident last June, when a pigs head was placed in front of it during Ramadan. The mosques vice president, Mohamed Labidi, said Monday that security has been a major concern for the center.

Montreals city hall announcedit would turn off its lights Monday night in solidarity with the Muslim community, while Quebec City set up a Web page to collect donations for the victims families.
A moment of silence was held in Montreals city hall before Mayor Denis Coderre met with leaders of the local Muslim community.

Base Gagetown’s scuba club holds annual underwater pumpkin carving contest
By Michelle Savage, Army Public Affairs with files from Gagetown Gazette newspaper
Gagetown, New Brunswick —The recreational Tankers Scuba Club located at 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown puts a twist on a Halloween tradition with their annual underwater pumpkin diving and carving contest.
Teams of two divers each take the plunge, sometimes clad in full Halloween costumes over their diving gear.
The challenge for each team of pumpkin divers is to bring a buoyant pumpkin down into the water to the three-metre limit before making any cuts into the pumpkin.
“Pumpkins do float,” noted club president Major (Retired) Robert Bissonnette, who is also the base’s Deputy Personnel Support Manager.
Once all the dive teams and their pumpkins make it to the bottom, the carving and creativity begins. Spectators cheer on their carving contenders.
“This event has taken place each year for as long as the club has existed, which is more than 20 years,” said Maj(Retd) Bissonnette.
He noted that the club’s size is fluid due to postings but it generally has from 15 to 25 members, both military and civilian, at any time. Club members take part in the annual contest free of charge at the Scotch Settlement Quarry near Oromocto, New Brunswick.
The 2018 event had 10 teams of two divers each, while six teams of divers took part in the carving contest in 2017. “The temperature was colder than last year but attendance was still great,” said Maj (Retd) Bissonnette.
The day is always an enjoyable success, with a potluck meal and prizes for best carving and best costume.
The Tankers Scuba Club is a recreational dive club located at 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown. The club welcomes military families and members of the community of Oromocto. They primarily certify through American Canadian Underwater Certification (ACUC) and teach all levels of courses. For information, contact [email protected]

Low altitude, speed contributed to fatal helicopter crash in northern N.B.
A new report into a fatal helicopter crash in northern New Brunswick says low altitude and speed made it difficult for the pilot to see or avoid unmarked power lines spanning a river.
The Transportation Safety Board says the pilot was likely unaware of the power transmission cables spanning the Restigouche River and did not see the lines before the helicopter collided with them.
Pilot Frederick Decoste was flying with two passengers, Quebec singer Roberto "Bob" Bissonnette and Quebec Capitales baseball team president Michel Laplante.
The report released today says fatigue may have impacted the pilot's decision-making abilities and performance, as he had limited opportunities to sleep prior to the flight.
As well, a toxicological screening suggested marijuana use by Decoste, but could not determine impairment.
The privately operated Bell 206B helicopter was en route from Charlo, N.B., to Riviere-du-Loup, Que., when it crashed into the river near Flatlands on Sept. 4, 2016.
Decoste and Bissonnette both died in the crash, but Laplante survived with non-life threatening injuries and was helped to shore by witnesses.
Bissonnette, a former Quebec Major Junior Hockey League player, later became a singer, recording comedic songs about hockey.

Thousands Of Canadians Gather At Vigils For Mosque Attack Victims

In addition to vigils, Canadians and government officials set up a number of other tributes and memorials to those killed in the attack. The Quebec government made a book of condolences online to collect messages from the public in memory of the victims.
