I know the bonus episodes say Raphael has been missing for months after the end of the game— presumably he went off in search of his father or the real Napoleon or more magical artefacts— but even without a sequel, I’ll always believe Raphael (and Fondue) returned to Paris eventually. Even if never finds Isaac, Raphael still has a family waiting for him in Paris—
And I know it’s a fandom cliche to say a group of characters is a family, and fans don’t need to see them as a family, but I do.
Raphael may not have found his father, but he fell in love with a fellow orphan girl and in turn, helped her reunite with her mother. There’s also her mother’s butler/bodyguard who would throw hands for them. Then there’s Raphael’s ‘nemesis’-turned-‘dear old friend’ and their dad, and the pair might try to apprehend Raphael sometimes but it’s kind of like a game to everyone now. And of course, we can’t forget Raphael’s canine companion, the one who’s been there from the start
They’re not the family Raphael expected, but they’re the one he deserves and they’re waiting for him back home.

Uncharted (2022) Review: In Which I Care Way Too Much About Centuries Old Wooden Sailing Ships ( Spoilers Abound! I Warned Ye)
Tom Holland Parkours, Mark Wahlburg Quips, and Oh My God, The Physics of Ships in This Film Do Not Make Sense…
Tumblr media
I walked into the Regal Cinema with an empty stomach and no background information surrounding Uncharted. As I payed for my $14 dollar mozarella sticks and root beer at the concession stand, I thought the name sounded familiar… but I wouldn’t find out that Uncharted was based on the video game franchise until just before writing this review. However, I don’t think missing out on this information was detrimental to my viewing experience— what that says about this film, I’ll leave to you.
Uncharted stars Tom Holland as Nate Drake and Mark Wahlburg as  Victor Sullivan, treasure hunters on the search for a lost treasure that was hidden by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. It’s revealed that Nate’s brother Sam, who hasn’t been seen since running away from their orphanage years prior, was previously working with Sullivan to find the treasure. Sullivan convinces Nate to help him finish what he and his brother started, and they begin their quest, starting with a set of golden cross-shaped keys that must be found, I.e, stolen from an auction house first.
Supporting characters include Sophia Ali as Chloe Frazer, Sullivan’s old partner and fellow thief; Antonio Banderas as Santiago Mancada, the rich surviving descendant of the family who financially supported Magellan’s journey; and Tati Gabrielle as Jo Braddock , a treasure hunter/mercenary extraordinaire hired by Moncada to tail and thwart Sullivan, Drake and Frazer on their search.
Right away, something felt off during the opening scenes between Holland and Wahlburg;  instead of settling into a nice dynamic (veteran thief with a secret/ newbie recruit), their scenes come across a little too quippy as they wittily banter back and forth in perfect time. Both actors have been leads in past films in the comedy/action genre and for whatever reason, this worked against them. Unfortunately, they never seem to find a good rhythm. The places I was able to ignore their too perfect and competitive banter was when they weren’t interacting with each other at all.
Sophia Ali gave a seamless performance as third thief Chloe Frazer—as did Tati Gabrielle. In fact, I think Gabrielle might have been the best character to watch because she brought a kind of romantic seriousness to her ‘rival thief and former-friends-to-enemies’ role that I found myself wanting to believe, almost in the same way I believe Michelle Pfeiffer's campy cat woman— yes, a bit over the top, but so good and unabashedly that character that I’m practically gagging for it. I’d previously seen Gabrielle in episodes of The 100 and Netflix’s You, and I never realized they were the same actress. Put simply,
Tumblr media
I look forward to watching more of Tati Gabrielle’s performances on the big screen, the little screen, and every screen in-between. (No shade to Sophia Ali, by the way. Her character simply wasn’t as flashy as Gabrielle’s).
Antonio Banderas as rich ancestor and rival Santiago Moncada was also a delight to watch. The veteran actor lent a sense of drama and danger to his role, right up until his demise by Braddock’s hand. I was quite invested in that scene: I was actually thinking “Wow! He’s so authentic and believable here. He really lends this movie a great measure of legitimacy—“ and then Braddock slit his throat. With a surprising lack of blood spray, I noticed. But I digress— I was sad to see this villain go.
I was enjoying the movie and my ridiculously overpriced but delicious mozzarella sticks up until the very last action sequence. Until then, Uncharted had been a mix of Tomb Raider and National Treasure— with less exciting action sequences and less intense puzzle solving. Sorry Uncharted. But I  thought it was realistic that parts of Barcelona (where the treasure was hidden)  had changed over time. In one scene a secret route under a church had been intersected by a modern night club and I liked this world-building quirk. It showed a lot of forethought on the writer’s behalf and a measure of trust in their audience. I for one, don’t know if I would have believed that a living and thriving city hadn’t changed over the course of centuries for the benefit of our characters traipsing through minutes of ancient looking catacombs. And then that trust was lost completely and I was violently ripped from the movie when Nate and Sullivan found the Magellan ships.
For some illogical reason, Braddock (who follows the pair to the treasure with her hired muscle) decides to hoist two centuries old, rotted, wooden expedition ships into the air by a pair of helicopters. Tom Holland then does some impressive parkour up and around the poop deck, followed by a sword fight between our two main characters and said mercenaries. An airfight between the ships occurs then, culminating in them banging into each other, one crashes into a mountain, and the remaining ship finally breaks to pieces once it hits the ocean below. This scene went on way too long, and I found myself calculating the physics of the ships themselves— they should have crumbled into pieces the moment they were hoisted up, right? Wood is heavy— if it didn’t crumble at that moment, then they definitely should have when they were knocked into each other mid-air. And no amount of CGI could make me believe that those ships, again, made of heavy lumber, would have been light enough to be lifted by helicopters a third of their size.
Furthermore, I couldn’t stop thinking that  if I was a historian in this universe and I learned that there was, at one time, two surviving Magellan ships that were intact, and then were shortly after destroyed in an impossible airlift fight by treasure hunters, I would personally murder all treasure hunters myself, with my bare f***ing hands.
Clearly, I care way too much about fake movie ancient artifacts. But someone has to, and If I’m the only thing grounding this film in reality, then so be it.
The movie ends satisfactorily and predictably— Tom Holland forgives Mark Wahlberg  for the death of his brother, he pulls gold out of his pants and they helicopter off into the sunset, semi-successful treasure hunters. It’s revealed that Drake’s brother is alive but that is a loose end for another movie. ( I did warn you there were going to be spoilers...)
Overall, it was an okay movie. If you’re bored and have money for a movie ticket on the weekend, it’s enjoyable and easy to watch. It may have more (re-)watch value to fans of the video game franchise, who probably saw more easter eggs than I did. If anything, watch it for the witty banter and Tati Gabrielle.

Memoirs, Science,& Greenery: Selected Books to Enjoy
In Kiltumper: A Year in an Irish Garden by Niall Williams, Christine Breen
35 years ago, when they were in their twenties, Niall Williams and Christine Breen made the impulsive decision to leave their lives in New York City and move to Christine's ancestral home in the town of Kiltumper in rural Ireland. In the decades that followed, the pair dedicated themselves to writing, gardening, and living a life that followed the rhythms of the earth. In 2019, with Christine in the final stages of recovery from cancer and the land itself threatened by the arrival of turbines just one farm over, Niall and Christine decided to document a year of living in their garden and in their small corner of a rapidly changing world. Proceeding month-by-month through the year, and with beautiful seasonal illustrations, this is the story of a garden in all its many splendors and a couple who have made their life observing its wonders.
Queen Elizabeth in the Garden: A Story of Love, Rivalry, and Spectacular Gardens by Trea Martyn
Queen Elizabeth I’s great love for gardens transformed her country and made gardeners of statesmen, courtiers, and soldiers. The two most powerful men in England during Elizabeth’s reign, Dudley and Cecil, led the way. Driven by their rivalry and devotion to their queen, they created ever more gorgeous gardens that amazed the world.
The Scent of Scandal: Greed, Betrayal, and the World's Most Beautiful Orchid by Craig Pittman
Some people will do anything for beauty or fame
Every year more than 100,000 people visit Sarasota’s Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, in large part to see its vast orchid collection, one of the most magnificent in the world. But the most famous orchid in Selby’s history—the one hailed as the most significant find in a century—isn't on display. It's the one that led to search warrants, a grand jury investigation, and headlines around the country. Discovered in Peru in 2002, the Phragmipedium kovachii quickly became the most sought-after orchid in the world. Prices soared to $10,000 on the black market and otherwise rational people bent rules and broke laws in their obsessive quest to possess it. Craig Pittman covered this fascinating story, as it happened, for the St. Petersburg Times, Florida’s largest newspaper. In this enthralling account, he unravels the tangled web of smugglers, scientists, and federal investigators to reveal who the real criminals were in this sordid affair. He also shines a spotlight on flaws in the international treaties governing trade in endangered wildlife—treaties that often protect individual plants and animals in shipping but do little to halt the destruction of whole colonies in the wild.         With candid interviews from nearly everyone involved in the case, The Scent of Scandal unspools like a riveting mystery novel, stranger than anything in Susan Orlean’s The Orchid Thief or the film Adaptation. Pittman shows how some people can become so obsessed—with beauty, with profit, with fame, with the desire to own a rare flower—that even the possibility of going to prison will not deter their risking everything. American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America by Michelle Obama
In April 2009, First Lady Michelle Obama planted a kitchen garden on the White House’s South Lawn.  As fresh vegetables, fruit, and herbs sprouted from the ground, this White House Kitchen Garden inspired a new conversation all across the country about the food we feed our families and the impact it has on the health and well-being of our children. Now, in her first-ever book, American Grown, Mrs. Obama invites you inside the White House Kitchen Garden and shares its inspiring story, from the first planting to the latest harvest.  Hear about her worries as a novice gardener – would the new plants even grow? Learn about her struggles and her joys as lettuce, corn, tomatoes, collards and kale, sweet potatoes and rhubarb flourished in the freshly tilled soil.  Get an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at every season of the garden’s growth, with striking original photographs that bring its story to life.  Try the unique recipes created by White House chefs and made with ingredients just picked from the White House garden.  And learn from the White House Garden team about how you can help plant your own backyard, school or community garden. Mrs. Obama’s journey continues across the nation as she shares the stories of other gardens that have moved and inspired her: Houston office workers who make the sidewalk bloom; a New York City School that created a scented garden for the visually impaired; a North Carolina garden that devotes its entire harvest to those in need; and other stories of communities that are transforming the lives and health of their citizens.   In American Grown, Mrs. Obama tells the story of the White House Kitchen Garden, celebrates the bounty of gardens across our nation, and reminds us all of what we can grow together.

For various reasons, the chapters actually won’t be published directly on tumblr anymore. Sorry guys, but the fight against tumblr’s html was lost. Way too time-consuming :/ Anyway, have nonetheless a little teaser of the actual chapter here! The actual chapter can be read thanks to the link at the top of the article.

3. top 5 books this year?
If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin, The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, Rhythm of War by Brandon Sanderson*, By Light We Knew Our Names by Anne Valente, and Bound by Evelyn DaSilva! And this is cheating but I read way less than usual this year and it’s hard to compile a top 5 because of it, so: I read the short story collections The Refugees by Viet Thanh Nguyen and How Long ‘til Black Future Month? by N.K. Jemisin and my faves from each respectively were I’d Love You To Want Me and The Elevator Dancer.
I’m gonna cheat again and list one manga (Spy x Family, unbelievablyyy satisfying and fun) and some of my favorite works by mutuals also. This year Eve @pinkafropuffs published plenty of fanfics in addition to Bound, but if I had to choose one recent favorite I’d say: May Flowers Bloom Wherever You Wander. Such a spectacular, magical end to a delightful series, everything fell together so so wonderfully 💞🌸 highly recommended reading her fanworks even if you’re not familiar with the fandoms!! Ari @haldimilks published Burnish, Burn, a Heathcliff centric Wuthering Heights story that I think about and revisit often<33 You also don’t necessarily have to read Wuthering Heights before reading it and the website it’s on classifies it as a 10 min read so! you have nothing to lose 👀🔥 Ilika @sheherazade wrote and it went unsaid. a Queen’s Thief one shot that blew me away! Her love for this series is contagious and she perfectly nailed the complicated feelings and sincerity between Gen and Irene imo 👑📚
*It came out this year but I only read the preview chapters, so like barely a fraction of this brick of a book, but like.... it’s the fourth book in the series and I know in my bones I’ll love it and I deliberately didn’t screen myself from 60% of spoilers because I’m so impatient and I’m so so EXCITED to finish it next year uff 🤒🤒 and hopefully do the same with the same author’s new novella, Dawnshard, also.
4. Any new authors you love?
Grady Hendrix (my kind of horror/supernatural thriller! love his ideas and he executes them very well too), Toni Morrison (I could read her prose forever. was legit sad for a bit when I reached the end of TBE)
6. anything you meant to read but never got to?
GQISJWJ so many books.... SO many it’s not even funny! I have this thing about reading a landmark number of books every year because anything else makes my brain itch uncomfortably so I was gonna read 5-10 more books than I did last year (125) and had to bite the bullet and chop it down to 75 books last month...the universe’s way of gently knocking me down a peg and reminding me the one thing I can never be is consistent 😌 (I’m kidding) anyway I complied a list of books I DEFINITELY plan to tackle come 2021 and a lot of it is compromised of books I had planned to read and/or started this year! Like The Count Of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, The House at Baker Street by Michelle Birkby, Bending the Willow: Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes by David Stuart Davies, The Book of Collateral Damage by Sinan Antoon, Thorn by Intisar Khanani, The Professor and Vilette by Charlotte Brontë, and The Bear and The Nightingale by Katherine Arden. (So mostly a bunch of Sherlock Holmes adjacent stuff and fairytale retellings.... mecore as hell 🤭)
11. favorite not newly published book?
If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin hands down but also most of Sherlock Holmes in general. Some of my top favorites of what I’ve read so far are: A Study in Scarlet, A Scandal in Bohemia, The Beryl Coronet, The Speckled Band, The Norwood Builder, A Case of Identity, The Adventure of the Copper Beeches, and The Adventure of the Gloria Scott.
13. least favorite books of the year?
Mexican Gothic by Silvia-Moreno Garcia (I was SO excited for this one! it just felt unpolished in terms of plot direction and I questioned a lot of the writing choices... it’s title is basically just a concept and that’s what the book felt like and it unfortunately wasn’t satisfying), The Door in the Hedge by Robin McKinley (short story collection and McKinley’s works in general are hit or miss for me and this was a collection of misses 🤕 too much description and not enough plot or substance in these particular retellings that were played too straight, like no twists or changes leapt out at or hooked me), And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie (I went into it knowing the original title and more about Christie in general than I wished to, but even without that... I just did not feel for any of the characters and was relieved every time one of them finally bit the dust), A Woman is no Man by Etaf Rum (don’t get me started.... I’ll just say I’m unfortunately aware of why non-Muslims ate this one up and I don’t like it. Tragedy p*rn and not even of the author’s own experiences. Reinforces too many stereotypes and is not a story about Muslims I think American/Western/whatever readers need to be exposed to rn.)
17. surprised by how good they were:
My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante (that end!! Very excited to see how the main characters’ lines progress in the next few books), The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix (this was SUPPOSED to be a popcorn read but I got SO invested it was magical), Pachinko by Min Jin Lee (one of those meandering books that follows generation after generation, dull at times but ultimately I liked the level of detail every other character got like? The author clearly knew what she was talking about and I enjoyed the overall picture she painted of the time periods the book takes place in. The duller parts were necessary and worth it), When The Emperor Was Divine by Julie Otsuka (I just loved the prose of this one and how quick a read it was. None of the main characters had names either which intrigued me a ton and worked in the story’s favor)
23. fastest time it took to read a book?
Mm. The audiobook to The Yellow Wallpaper was like 45(?) min long GWHSHWH I also read Dostoyevsky’s short story A Novel in Nine Letters, which was short and snappy, and I’m also in the middle of reading An Honest Thief and Other Stories, also by him, which I probs won’t finish till next year but the first story was also easy breezy. I’ve mostly read short stories in 1-2 sittings this year, to keep me sane in between homework and freaking out, so I could go on but those stick out to me!

Day #4153
here's the responses I got of what ppl think michel and Raphael's relationship is:
exes, amicable
exes, but michel still has feelings for Ralph and gets jealous easily
just classmates (not particularly close, but friendly enough)
used to be best friends but had a falling out so they're not close anymore
friends that want to beat each other up sometimes but still are besties
the original jpn writes them as childhood friends!! it's just that Ralph doesn't see michel as a particularly reliable guy/he's a bad influence LMAO

Rhythm Thief for the fandom and Raphael for the character ask?
Thanks!! :D Sorry, this is so long!
001 | Send me a fandom and I will tell you my:
Favorite character: It’s probably Charlie? Or Raphael? But it’s very hard to choose, honestly.
Least Favorite character: I thought it was going to be Jean-Francois, but he’s honestly so hilarious I couldn’t find it in myself to hate him. I honestly like everybody! All the NPCs are great; I love how almost everyone in the town treats you like family.
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Oh man… I haven’t given this much thought yet! I mostly just like Raphael/Marie right now, but I might like other ships in the future once I think about them more.
Character I find most attractive: Um… I’m honestly not sure.
Character I would marry: Again, I’m not really sure, haha... Maybe Duchess Elisabeth? She’s pretty cool.
Character I would be best friends with: Charlie!
a random thought: I absolutely love the mix of genres of music in this game! It’s so cool to see Baroque music getting some love. I especially love the harpsichord getting used in Phantom R’s theme and throughout the game.
An unpopular opinion: I don’t know if it’s unpopular? But I really like Marie. She reminds me a lot of Espella from PLvsAA, who I always saw getting a lot of hate, and whenever I see a character getting hated a lot, I automatically love them out of spite, haha.
My Canon OTP: I guess Raphael/Marie is canon? I was surprised at how much I liked the pairing; usually I don’t like canon romance, but, as you said in your ask, I also really enjoyed the sincerity of it. I feel like they’re really good friends too, and they just seem to really care about each other and want the best for each other.
My Non-canon OTP: I guess I do kind of like Raphael/Charlie? More as friends than romantically, but I really liked seeing Charlie begrudgingly grow to respect Raphael as the game went on. The moment when Charlie rescued Raphael was awesome too, and really got me invested in their relationship.
Most Badass Character: There’s a lot of those in this game! I’ll say Charlie for how insanely strong her arm is to be able to save Raphael and Marie at the same time, but Inspector Vergier and Duchess Elisabeth are very close behind her.
Most Epic Villain: Whoever built the Hanging Gardens, haha… Graf and Napoleon were kind of epic, but they also made me laugh a lot, so they don’t get to be “most epic.”
Pairing I am not a fan of: I don’t really have a good answer for this one… just… anything I don’t ship, I guess? I can’t think of any pairings I’d hate.
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): No one in particular… I guess I would have liked to learn more about Elisabeth’s past, but overall, I feel like everyone was treated pretty well.
Favourite Friendship: I really like Marie and Josette! I wish we got to see more of them together; I really liked the stories of them growing up together in the convent.
Character I most identify with: Raphael, I think. I have perfect pitch like he does, and music’s a huge part of my life too, even if I don’t dance much, haha. I’ve also always been a nerdy “nice kid” in public too, so I understand how he likes switching between his two personas for different situations.
Character I wish I could be: Charlie, haha… she’s super cool, and I wish I had her self-confidence to just dress the way I want and be adventurous like her.
003 | Give me a character & I will tell you:
How I feel about this character: I love him so much. He’s such a good boy. From the moment I saw him, I knew he’d be my son. I love how he’s so musical, and how he’s a great cook, and how much he cares about his dad and his dog and his friends. I really love how he just loves to dance and how he turns everything he does into a dance or performance. He’s just amazing and adorable.
Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: Marie, and maybe Charlie.
My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: Charlie when I’m not shipping them, Fondue when I am. I also wish we could have seen more of Raphael with Michel and Emile! I think the three of them had a lot of potential for friendship.
My unpopular opinion about this character: I can’t remember his name, but Raphael really should have helped that man near his apartment with running his store. Raphael kept promising him and not actually helping…
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I’m just mad that his dramatic ‘getting shot’ moment wound up being ‘only a scratch.’ I was robbed of my Charlie and Raphael hurt/comfort moment! :’D I’m glad that he didn’t die, though.
Favorite friendship for this character: Probably tied between Raphael and Charlie and Raphael and Fondue.
My crossover ship: I’m not sure if I have one… I’ll leave this blank for now.
