Another beautiful room in #Venice. I spent so much time looking at and thinking about the work of @omalleyniamh while everyone else seems to only want to talk about everything else. “Niamh O'Malley's sculpture and moving image works hold us in the space for which they are made. Using steel, limestone, wood, and glass, she shapes and assembles objects to create a purposeful landscape of forms. Sculptures tall and free- standing, ground-bearing and cantilevered, with paced and looped moving image, inhabit and animate. On the floor lie undulating limestone forms punctured by deep cuts and reminiscent of drains or the harsh fissures in weathered, sedimentary rock. There are hints at functional objects and familiar structures; architecture's shadow. Shelter invites us to stand under its awning and look up into a fan of leaf-embossed translucent glass. Vent fills an entire LED screen, concentrated on a loop of flapping lovers, opening, closing, in and out. Breathing. This exhibition is a call to #gather. It invites #movement and #communality. It is both lure and demand, for touch, encounter, and occupancy. It draws attention to its location towards the end of the length of the #Arsenale; a place of thresholds, windows, glass, holes, drains, vents, and a glimmer of water and daylight. O'Malley’s sculptures gesture towards enabling, offering protection, conveying sensations of touch, and more of grabbing, holding, caressing surfaces, offering a moment of tether and precarious poise.” #NiamhOMalley #Ireland #IrishPavilion #VeniceBiennale #templebargalleryandstudios #Dublin #BrianDillion #LizzieLloyd #EimearMcbride #ClíodhnaShaffrey #MichaelHill (at La Biennale di Venezia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cfx1wfkI1vu/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Drake’s Perfect Balance
By John Slamson, including an interview with Michael Hill.
Clothes have a way of appealing to our imagination that can sometimes cloud our judgement. We can be so enamoured with the craftsmanship that we tend to think of tailors in a very romantic way, their dusty workshops pitted against the infamous brands whose supposed magnitude evokes ruthless volumes and soulless commodities. And we tend to be wary of ‘brands’ as opposed to ‘names’.
Drake’s is certainly a brand name that can reconcile the two. Their history is based on craftsmanship, as Michael Drake initially produced scarves, handkerchiefs and shawls. It expanded into neckwear in the late 1980s’, working with Charles Hill who helped develop the ties and pocket squares that Drake’s has become famous for and that stay at the core of their reputation. Since then, Drake’s has become a household name in its own right and they now boast a line of luxury handmade jackets and suits.
They remain a crafts-based operation, using their own workshops or small factories that produce locally. So they really are a brand— and, yes, they really have a hand-made foundation too, which accounts for the sophisticated finishing, the refinement, the overall quality. Shirts and ties are made in London and Somerset. Tailoring is made in Northern Italy. For a complete view of their history see here
Drake’s ties are hand-made in England and they manage to be both up-to-date and keep a vintage feel, which might just be how Drake’s identity defines itself. I had one made to order, which means you can choose length, construction and fabric, possibly even a unique batch not appearing on the website. The ancient madder ties are the most exquisite, providing motifs and muted colours that are extremely versatile. The classic patterns are given new life with three-fold, untipped constructions. As we know, the ‘fashionable’ lightweight constructions can verge on flimsiness. Not so here: what is quite remarkable is how the tie boasts a substantial hand while remaining extremely light. The knot falls into place naturally and is not small at all.
The pocket squares are on the same level of refinement. The tapestry and paisley designs are all you will ever need. The wool and silk or cotton blends, the intricacy of the patterns and the shimmering wealth of greens and beiges and burgundies provide an endless variety of combinations.
In contemporary menswear, the pervasive Italian influence is often seen as unparalleled. Scant attention is paid to how the British cloth tradition actually informs Italian style. The glen check and gun club patterns, the Donegal tweeds and other window-pane designs at the heart of contemporary trends are strongly redolent of Scottish, Irish or English countryside traditions. A case in point is Drake’s Escorial wool jacket, based on a cloth woven exclusively for them. With its unstructured Italian style, natural shoulders and patch pockets (including the ticket pocket), it is a splendid olive flannel that still evokes British tradition (here a picture taken from Permanent Style).
With their relaxed take on traditional tailoring, Drake’s is fully in synch with contemporary trends while retaining a strong sense of cloth and texture, bridging the gap between casual and sophisticated.
Charles Hill’s son, Michael Hill, and Mark Cho took over the company in 2010, Michael Hill becoming the creative director of the brand. He has always been faithful to the legacy of the brand and at the same time truly creative in furthering the originality of Drake’s aesthetics line, addressing both contemporary style and Drake’s own rich history.
The range of your ties and pocket squares is astonishing. What are your guiding principles aesthetically and in terms of target market? Do you still consider the haberdasher side of Drake’s as the core of your business?
We have always put product front and centre, and generally we let it speak for itself. Quality manufacture is one of our central principles, and all our ties are still made by hand right here in East London. Our offer each season is usually fairly large, and the guiding principle tends to be making things that we like and that we can get excited about, and more often than not our customers share our tastes.
What is left to invent regarding ties? Have all the possibilities been explored in terms of textures and constructions?
The necktie hasn’t changed much in 100 years now—besides the odd fluctuation in width – and there’s good reason for that. Just as with most aspects of men’s dress, the fundamentals were set by the start of the 20th Century, and have shifted very little. It’s hard to improve on something so classic. Drake’s has never been about reinventing the wheel, it’s about offering timeless products that are made to the highest standards.
How would you describe your approach to designing a collection?
As I’ve said, our designs are usually a reflection of what we like, of the things we get excited about. From experience, if we feel very strongly about something our customers often share that enthusiasm. Drake’s certainly has a rich history to draw on, both in terms of design and manufacture, which is always a good starting point each season.
When you look to the past for inspiration, how do you make it relevant for today? What do you change and what do you keep?
We feel it’s always important to pay respect to the past, and to the working methods we’ve been using for the last four decades. At the same time, it’s important to pay attention to general trends in the way men dress right now – for example, our ties tend to be an 8cm width these days, where 20 years ago they would have been more like 10cm. But the materials we use and the construction techniques we employ have remained pretty constant.
Despite Drake’s constant British identity in terms of looks, the tailoring seems to veer towards a more Italian trend, how do you balance the ingredients of your stylistic identity? Do you have a more international approach today?
Absolutely, it’s certainly a mix of influences. Drake’s is about a relaxed elegance, so for the most relaxed tailoring we had to look towards Italy, as British tailoring tends to be far more structured. Our founder, Michael Drake, has always said that he considers the Drake’s look to be ‘the English look, the way an Italian might imagine it to be.’ That, mixed with a little French chic.
How do you choose between what should be made in England and made elsewhere? Is it just a cost-efficiency decision or are there technical and aesthetic factors involved?
Although a large amount of our product we produce ourselves, in our own factories, we can’t make everything ourselves, so when it comes to working with another maker it’s just a case of choosing who we think is best, be it knitwear in the Scottish borders, or tailoring in Italy. That’s really the only consideration. There are definitely things we could have made cheaper, or quicker, or in greater quantities, but that would compromise the quality of the final product, and that’s our primary concern, so we continue to look for the best makers we can find.
