Trollbeads is a Danish jewelry company best known for their expensive glass and silver beads. They’re the sort of jewelry you’re supposed to buy or give as a gift for special occasions. I admittedly have a soft spot for them because it’s the only place I can get silver pendants depicting trolls and other Nordic folklore creatures and recently they’ve been advertising pretty aggressively to me because I bought their chihuahua bead.

They especially want me to buy this bead.

It’s a male troll standing on a classic Danish designer chair according to the description. Only I had to visit their store to see it from this angle. Every ad I get looks like THIS

I don’t even know what sort of “special occasion” this would be for other than to show you appreciate your bottom/top.

Actually it's Lake Hillier in Western Australia though it's probably easy to get it mixed up as there are plenty of pink lakes in the world.

Apparently Lake Hillier's bright pink colour comes from a mix of colourful microbes. There was some testing done a few years ago using DNA sequencing and they found "almost 500 extremophiles – organisms that thrive in extreme environments – including bacteria, archaea, algae and viruses. Most were halophiles, a sub-group of extremophiles that can tolerate high levels of salt."

Which makes sense since the lake's saltiness is about 8 times more than the ocean. You would have to be pretty hardy to survive that environment!

"Several of these halophiles were colourful microbes like purple sulphur bacteria; Salinibacter ruber, which are red-orange bacteria; and red-coloured algae called Dunaliella salina. The mix of these microbes, and possibly others, explains the pink colour of the lake, says Tighe."

And today for MerMay I am wearing my lovely little mermaid trollbead (amongst others) which is gorgeous but almost impossible to photograph!

It’s so lovely, with a little bottom and lovely tail—I am relieved to discover the official TrollBead website also struggled!

I collect divination tools like tarot cards, pendulums, tea cups with symbols, astrology dice, kau chim, and the list goes on. I just like collecting them which means that, yes, my guests drink out of cups with weird symbols printed on the inside. I’ve seen it all but I recently came across something new: a silver fortune bead.

It’s made by Trollbeads. According to their website you’re supposed to interpret the first symbols that catch your eye together. For example, the frog means abundance and the skull means trouble so together they mean money trouble (or whatever abundance you had in mind).

They don’t tell you exactly how to use it, only what the symbols mean, but considering the fact you’re supposed to wear it on your wrist I’m assuming the idea is whenever you encounter a situation where you’d like a bit of magical help you look at the bead. Say, you’re invited to a party but you don’t know anyone so you check the bead and it shows two hands together which means friendship, meaning you’ll probably make new friends.

It’s meant to be more of a fun novelty than an actual divination tool but I’ve never seen anything like it which is honestly surprising. I feel like it would be a very easy thing to replicate. Just cut a big bead into two pieces, paint symbols on them and you’ve got a fortune bead. I hope it becomes more widespread because it’s honestly such a fun idea.

Okay, I will admit I have done some seriously anal-retentive organizing in my day - nothing seems to give me so much satisfaction as a good organizing scheme. This one may take the cake: I already have a well-established work "uniform" - tunic, tank, scarf, and Fluevog shoes - basic black layered with lots of color, no thought required, grab and go. But I have this wonderful collection of Trollbeads from years ago that has gone untouched bcz they are designed primarily as exchangeable bracelets and I HATE things on my wrist. I also really hate having things that never get used or seen. But - wearing a pendant I can live with and I have a silver ring and chain just for that purpose, though making bead choices in the morning: not gonna happen. Enter in a set of shower curtain hooks and pre-selected beads for each of my beautiful scarves. When I head back to campus in February we will let the experiment begin!

Yay, something arrived to wear when I'm out spinning Pokestops! A Facebook charity group is auctioning off donated beads to raise money for Ukrainian refugees, and someone offered a few Pokeball beads. These were made by Trollbeads near the time PokemonGo launched in 2016; apparently the were only given to certain retailers, which you had to find find first and then participate in a contest to win! Well, I'm happy to have a pre-loved one, and I know it's not much, but hope the donation can help someone out a little.
