Watching Those Old Scientists with an 8 year old Trekkie in training:

- Spock “laughs” at Boimler’s joke when they’re by the portal and she screams - legitimately screams - whips her around toward me and says, “What is happening? Why is Spock laughing? I’m scared! That’s so scary!”

- (I have to pause and rewind because she’s completely missed Boimler’s reaction. I’m desperately trying not to laugh)

- Chapel and Boimler are in the turbolift talking and after Boimler says he’s afraid he’s messed up Spock, she says, “Wait. Does Spock have a crush on Boimler?”

- (Spoimler nation rise. Even an eight year old sees it)

- Turbolift conversation ends and she looks at me, brow furrowed. “Spock shouldn’t force himself to be human. He’s Vulcan and human. He should be himself.”

- (Out of the mouths of babes, right?)

- Mariner and Boimler are in Pike’s ready room and she’s nodding along as Mariner talks about Hot Spock. “It’s the ears,” she says confidently. “But he shouldn’t smile. That’s creepy.”

When we think about Michael, it’s whatever challenges or whatever darkness he may struggle with, ultimately he’s a hero.  He’s a guy who’s going to put his ass on the line to save people.  Those are the touchstones we use, and I think that is a bit of a throwback to classic television.  It’s a world where people are really trying to do the right things for other people.  The characters on the show, however they bicker, are a family and they stick together.  That’s what they do.  I think that’s sort of comforting.  It’s fun to write, and I there are a lot of interesting and subtle things to explore within that.  That’s the kind of television that I really cared about growing up, and I think there’s a place for it.  That’s part of what we’re doing.

OMG yes exactly! As a kid who grew up with A Team, Magnum, Knight Rider, Batman the Animated Series, etc I like characters who are ultimately heros even if they also have some darkness too

I think the fact that Noah could stop bullets in s1 and no other alien apparently bothered to learn that is a damn shame bc it was cool as fuck

*posts that brain rot only to post more xD* -nix encountering gabriel is quite literally an inner dialogue like "ah yes I can work with fellow victim of Cosmic Horrors, if I am tolerated and just maybe ignore my own issues." (could be bloody, having just done some fatal stabbings *highly moody* and nix is just like unphased by it) -ironically, in contrast encountering michael for nix would be far more terrifying for nix (his internal everything would be like 'neat- this is cool and he seems pretty adjusted... so how about you feel like you're in extreme danger despite that' and nix is just forced to be cagey as shit more than normal by forces out of his control)
