Mike Breen to receive Vin Scully Award for sportscasting excellence from WFUV Radio Nov. 1

Mike Breen (FCRH ’83), the 2020 Curt Gowdy Award-winning Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer, New York Knickerbockers play-by-play announcer on MSG Networks and “Voice of the NBA on ABC/ESPN” will become the second Fordham University alumnus to receive the Vin Scully Award for Excellence in Sports Broadcasting from WFUV Radio (90.7 FM/wfuv.org). WFUV is the noncommercial, member-supported public media service of Fordham University. The station celebrates its 75th anniversary this fall.

WFUV will also present Emmy Award-winning CBS Evening News anchor and 60 Minutes correspondent Norah O’Donnell with the Charles Osgood Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism.

The Awards will be presented on Tuesday night, November 1, at On the Record: A Celebration of Achievement in News and Sports Broadcasting, a benefit for WFUV, in the Costantino Room at Fordham School of Law (150 W. 62nd Street, NYC).

Anthony Mason, national correspondent for CBS News, will serve as emcee for the evening.

On the Record was not held in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, and no awards were presented.

George Bodarky (FCRH’93), Fordham alumnus and WFUV’s longtime news and public affairs director, and current community partnership and training editor at WNYC, will be honored with a special tribute.

The evening will also honor two of WFUV’s exceptional student broadcasters: newscaster Abigail Delk (FCRH ’22) and sportscaster Alexander Wolz (FCRH ’22).

Beth Knobel, associate professor of communication & media studies at Fordham, will host an armchair discussion with some of the participants.

Michael Kay (FCRH ’82), YES Network’s “Voice of the Yankees” and ESPN NY Radio host, became the first Fordham alum to receive the Scully Award in 2018. Breen and Kay were classmates at Fordham.

Breen is in his 30th year calling Knicks games. The Yonkers native and Long Island resident is best known for his “BANG” call for a critical basket.

The Scully Award recognizes the late, iconic baseball broadcaster who passed away earlier this year. In 2016, he completed his 67th season as “Voice of the Dodgers” and is a renowned Fordham alumnus (FCRH 1949). WFUV was the launching pad for his Hall of Fame broadcast career. Previous Scully Award recipients include: inaugural honoree Vin Scully (2008), Dick Enberg (2009), Ernie Harwell (2010), Pat Summerall (2011), Al Michaels (2012), Bob Costas (2013), Verne Lundquist (2014), Mike “Doc” Emrick (2015), Brent Musburger (2016), Bob Wolff (2017), Michael Kay (2018), Tim McCarver (2019).

The Osgood Award acknowledges the distinguished Fordham/WFUV Radio alumnus (FCRH 1954) who was the long time, Emmy Award-winning anchor of CBS Sunday Morning and recipient of the 2017 News & Documentary Emmy Award for Lifetime Achievement. Vegas Dave’s ‘Cupcake’ Loss

First up is David Oancea, better known as Vegas Dave. This prominent sports bettor is renowned for boasting on his Instagram account about his big bets and even bigger wins on long-shot bets.

However, he had to eat humble pie in 2016, when he bet $1 million on female MMA champion, Miesha ‘Cupcake’ Tate at the UFC 200. Tate faced Amanda Nunes in a battle to retain her bantamweight belt. Within three minutes and 16 seconds of the first round, Tate was overpowered by a rear-naked choke, losing the title to Nunes (and losing Vegas Dave a million bucks).

Oancea seemed to take it in his stride though, and posted that he was more concerned about Tate’s broken nose than he was about the money. Not sure we would be so calm about losing a cool million, but when you have it to bet, you certainly have it to lose.

Michael Jordan Plays an Expensive Hole

The NBA legend is a notorious gambler. In fact, Jordan’s early retirement is said to have been a secret suspension due to his gambling antics.

It’s not surprising that he racked up the $1.2 million debt in the first place though…

In a tell-all book, ‘Michael & Me: Our Gambling Addiction…My Cry For Help!’ betting buddy Richard Esquinas described one incident of Jordan losing $1.2 million to a businessman after a 10-day golf and betting binge. He apparently managed to recoup some through play, managing to negotiate it down to $300,000.

It’s not surprising that he racked up the $1.2 million debt in the first place though, when he’s known to play a single hole for $100,000.

Maybe Michael should take his own advice and keep things “fun and entertaining.” Then again, there’s nothing boring about losing $1.2 million.

Brit Bets His Winnings and Loses

Steven Richards is a British roofing contractor who’s also is an avid sports fan and bettor. In 2013, he was enjoying an amazing accumulator bet which started with a £10 ($13) bet.

By successfully predicting the winners of 12 rugby matches, Richards brought his total up to £38,970 (approx. $52,800). The luck obviously went to his head and, a week later, Steven decided to bet on one more rugby match. Not the £10 bet of before, but a whopping $30,000 on Wales to beat Australia.

Had they have won, he would have been £55,000 richer, but alas, Australia won with a 30-26 victory at the Millennium Stadium, Wales.

His winnings from the week before had barely touched his account before it was all gone again. That’s gotta hurt!

Birdman’s Double Whammy

Big-time bettor Birdman wasn’t a happy hip-hop star after a spectacular loss on Super Bowl bets. Twice.

A lifelong New England Patriots fan (and well-known for his social media boasts), Birdman declared that he was ready to put $5 million on the Pats during the Super Bowl XLVI. When one sportsbook called his bluff, inviting him to put his money where his mouth is, Birdman was uncharacteristically quiet.

He did, however, take a ‘smaller’ $1 million bet on the game against 50 Cent. Unfortunately for Birdman, the New York Giants won the game with 21-17, making him a little less rich and ‘Fiddy’ a little more so.

It seems Birdman didn’t learn his lesson, and when Super Bowl LII came around, he was back on Instagram, boasting about a $100,000 bet with Philly rapper AR-Ab. There were subsequent posts which raised the bet total to $200,000, but they mysteriously disappeared.

Once again, Birdman backed his beloved Patriots to defeat AR-Ab’s Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles were victorious with a 41-33 win, and Birdman was a loser once again.

Daredevil Matthew Webb

Of course, sports betting and losing spectacularly is not a new phenomenon. This one dates back to 1883, with British daredevil and gambler, Matthew Webb.

Webb rose to fame as the first man in history to swim across the English Channel. He made his living by betting against the public for various swimming challenges. He once won £400 (a huge sum in those days) by swimming for 74 hours straight.

On July 24, 1883, Webb entered the water and was never seen again. Quite possibly, the largest sports betting loss of all time.

In 1881, he moved to America and had a few successful challenges, but money was running out. He decided he had to up the stakes. He invited bets that he could swim across the whirlpool of the Niagara Falls. The bet was staked at $10,000 and on July 24, 1883, Webb entered the water and was never seen again. Quite possibly, the largest sports betting loss of all time.

For most of these guys, losing a million isn’t such a big deal, but it would make any casual bettor cry! We’d love to say we’ve never felt the pain of a sports betting loss, but we’d be lying. It happens to the best of us.

William Billy Walters was born on July 15th, 1946. Although many know him as Billy Walters, the sports bettor, his influence on the gambling industry reaches much further than that. Mike Francesa is becoming a white dwarf

Mike Francesa’s belief that he is superior led to a series of career mistakes that has culminated in the ongoing and embarrassing display in which he tries to salvage the remaining vestiges of relevance.

Throughout his media career, Francesa’s ego has always been his largest organ/appetite. Well beyond his ample stomach proportions and insatiable addiction to Diet Coke, it’s always been there. From his tenure functioning as “Brent’s Brain” working for Brent Musburger at CBS and feeding the veteran broadcaster the obscure nuggets of information that seemingly no one else had and ghostwriting articles for Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder, his sights were set higher.

Despite an accent that came right out of New Yawk and his tacit refusal to use the deep…broadcaster’s…voice exemplified by Ernie Johnson, Francesa had a gimmick few others had when it really wasn’t a gimmick. It was just him.

Put on the air at WFAN while the first all-sports radio station was in its infancy, his takes were unique and generally well thought out. Regardless of the arrogance and self-promotion behind them, he delivered them in such a cocksure manner that it was impossible to ignore and easy to grant credibility even if they were preposterous. Put on the air with a similarly unique voice – who was unhinged and obnoxious – Chris “Mad Dog” Russo, the show took off with the partnership lasting two decades until the desire to be on their own and make more money split them.  

A substantial part of his shtick was the tacit refusal to ever admit he was wrong about anything. If that’s an exaggeration, it’s only slight.

The spiral began years ago and began hurtling down the mountain at speeds only a wall would stop. The move from the televised simulcast of his radio show on the YES Network to Fox Sports 1 was half-understandable in that YES – like the Yankees propaganda wing it is – preferred someone who would not criticize the organization in any way except in the meekest, most apologetic tone. While a Yankees fan, Francesa never went that far. Certainly, Michael Kay was an ideal replacement for what the network sought in terms of shilling content. FS1 not only had a fraction of the reach of YES, but it was constantly preempted. Francesa, whose arrogance by then had extended to thinking he could negotiate his own contracts sans an agent, had a deal where his simulcast was rarely simulcast. Eventually, the sides mutually agreed to part and he was never on television again.

Then there was his “farewell tour,” something that was generally limited to legitimate on-field sports stars like Derek Jeter. He bogarted it and wallowed in the accolades and feting for a year.

It was only after the “retirement” that reality hit and the expected litany of high profile, well compensated jobs were not there.

So, as the WFAN replacement The Afternoon Drive with Chris Carlin, Maggie Gray and Bart Scott struggled in every conceivable way; as the time slot lost advertisers; with WFAN listeners doing the unthinkable and abandoning ship for Michael Kay, avid Francesa fans lamented his departure and wished for his return, he did everyone a favor. Except it was critical that there be a caveat that he didn’t come crawling back because he had nowhere else to go, but that it was a preplanned decision to promote his app.

Yet it hasn’t gone as he expected.

A vast portion of his fans have had enough. Joining Twitter – something he said he’d never, ever do – was perhaps the biggest mistake, even bigger than the app, its clumsy rollout, Francesa making it sound like a revolutionary creation, and its exorbitant cost for what subscribers are getting. Now, he can no longer deny his most rancid takes never happened. Suggesting the Phillies signed Bryce Harper to trade him for Mike Trout was the worst one in recent memory. He’s giving opinions that would be mocked and ridiculed by Francesa himself had a caller or another media person given them and now there’s a video clip from the app to see it and a tweet to quote it verbatim.

The explanations of how long he plans to stay on the air and what the future holds are generating yawns and shrugs. Fans might have clamored for him to come back, but quickly realized that his indifference grew worse in the interim from his “retirement” to his return. Doing the show from home, being lazier than ever, exhibiting a toxic narcissism that not even his biggest fans can stand – it’s all contributed to the growing indifference of what he says.  

He’s been reduced to Twitter screeds that elicit the same “Who cares?” that Francesa uttered when a caller asked him about the death of the Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee.

The condescension, contradictions, self-destructiveness to feed his megalomania – all have contributed to his rapid slide. It’s difficult to say that he should have altered the strategy to that got him to his formerly lofty position in the first place, but there’s been no adaptation. It’s the same. It might even have gotten worse. This is rapidly descending to his worst nightmare of irrelevance.

The ever-present ego expanded like a star’s expansion into a red giant. The metaphor is apt because, eventually, it retracts into a white dwarf and eventually burns out.

Musicares honors Mike McCready at Seattle’s Showbox with historic night of music

Every year Musicares, a part of the Grammy Foundation that helps people in the music industry with addiction and other medical resources, puts on a special music event and for the first time, Seattle was the chosen spot. The 2018 version was organized to not only pay homage to one of the greatest music cities on the planet but to honor one of its biggest supporters, Mike McCready. With Mike’s history with recovery, Musicares and of course Seattle, the night that was planned out couldn’t be anything but legendary.

The first to take the stage was Senior Director of Musicares Erica Krusen, explaining how important it was to do this show in Seattle. (she herself has a huge connection to Seattle via Pearl Jam) After the roll call of generous sponsors was finished up, it was time for some music and the first all-star grouping of the night of McCready, Danny Newcomb, Duff McKagan, Mark Arm and Barrett Martin started things off with a bang. Spread out across a stage packed full of gear, they fired off a blistering version of “Search and Destroy” by The Stooges. After the last note was played, Newcomb exited, leaving the four remaining rock stars to play “TV Eye” also by The Stooges, much like they did a few years ago on top of the Pike Place Market sign.

Thunderous applause greeted the end of The Stooges portion of the night, giving way to what is lovingly known in the northwest as Flight to Mars. The usual suspects came out for this one, with Mike wearing his trademark white flying Vee. As Paul Passarelli, Gary Westlake, Tim DiJulio, McCready and Mike Musburger played the first few notes of Thin Lizzy‘s “Cowboy Song” from the 1976 album, Jailbreak, the crowd had a sense they were in for something good. Although most were seated you could feel the energy somehow rising with Passarelli delivering the kind of epic vocal performances he’s known for, with the rest of the members bringing their ��A” games as well. The twin-guitar attack of McCready and “Rock Tim” DiJulio completely destroyed the legendary solos in that song as they traded licks and played off of each other throughout. With zero pause, the band launched right into UFO’s “Lights Out,” once again knocking it out of the park with this lineup of friends finishing off the FTM portion of the show with one of the greatest rock songs ever written, “Love to Love” from UFO‘s 1977 album, Lights Out. If you’ve ever seen FTM, then you know how much this band puts into making these songs special, and this performance at the Showbox left most people with jaws on the floor, again. Especially those that had never previously experienced Flight to Mars.

After that epic display, a special video was shown on the screen behind the stage with all four members of Seattle darlings Thunderpussy telling Mike how much they love him and wishing they could have been there but they are on tour and the video would have to suffice. Mike clearly was moved by their message and playful display!

Next up were a few auction items, a 2014 Gibson Les Paul signed by all the members of Pearl Jam and a one of a kind Nixon watch crafted from a guitar strap from the late Chris Cornell. (still hard to type that) Those priceless items brought in a whopping $16K and $15.5K respectively and after Chris Adams had taken the last bid, he welcomed Musicares Chair Michael McDonald to the stage, who explained a bit of his personal recovery story, before asking for donations to directly help others suffering from addiction. The Seattle crowd was generous with countless people standing up with their glowsticks wanting to contribute financially. After some light-hearted banter from northwest native Joel McHale, the next set of music was ready to take over the sold-out venue.

Kim Virant, Nancy Wilson, Chad Smith, Josh Klinghoffer, Duff, Mike would play “Dead Flowers” from The Rolling Stones with Kim and Nancy sharing a mic for what turned out to be another righteous display of musicianship. As Kim sang to Mike with her arms on his shoulders, you could feel the love for this guy in the room, from the band members, to every table in the Showbox. A quick lineup change would have Barrett taking over on drums, with Nancy and Kim exiting, while Star Anna came out. The first few unmistakable notes of Mad Season‘s “River of Deceit” brought another “oh wow” moment to a night full of them. Star made it her own with a hauntingly beautiful vocal performance featuring Duff on backing vocals.

Another highlight of the evening came when Nancy Wilson wandered back out with Ben Smith and Ryan Waters, joined by Duff and Mike for a mind-blowing performance of Pink Floyd‘s  “Comfortably Numb,” which found McCready absolutely owning the universe on the guitar solos. They quickly followed that up with Heart‘s “Even It Up” with Wilson singing, providing even more northwest music epicness on that one.

Part of the reason for this gathering of stars was to present Mike with the Stevie Ray Vaughan award from Musicares. The presenter, Duff McKagan, lovingly explained how important McCready, his friend of 40 years, is to him and the world in general. After accepting the award, McCready went down a partial list of the people in the northwest we have lost and then honored Musicares themselves for the work they do to help prevent that from happening again.

The NFL 100 Greatest series kicks off another category Friday, October 25 at 8:00 PM ET with 70 of the top 100 greatest game changers unveiled.

Bob Costas, the central voice of NBC's Olympics coverage for a quarter-century, is leaving the host’s seat. Mike Tirico will take over as host of NBC's Olympics programming starting next year with the Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. Costas is also reducing his role in several other NBC sports endeavors, including NFL football and the Triple Crown. "It just felt to me like the right time, and it's felt like the right time for a while," Costas told the New York Times. "This was a good time to step away, while I could still do it." Costas hosted the Olympics for 24 years. NBC itself has broadcast every Summer Olympics since 1988 and every Winter Olympics since 2002. The network also holds the rights to every Olympics going forward through 2032. Prior to last year's Rio Games, Costas decided that he would step down, and Rio provided a suitable endpoint from a narrative perspective, he said.
