Xiaomi Mi A2 could come wismart vending machine softwareth a telephoto lens and 2X optical zoom feature, according to tweets by the company shared ahead of the launch. Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite will launch at an event in Madrid, Spain today. Both phones are expected to the hit the Indian market soon as well. Mi A2 is the successor to last year’s Mi A1 smartphone, which was the first Android One smartphone from the company. Both Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite will be Android One phones.

In a series of tweets shared ahead of the launch, Xiaomi has indicated that Mi A2 could have a telephoto lens, which will zoom in on objects for a more magnified view. One of Xiaomi’s tweet reads, “Don’t miss a thing”, and shows two lenses magnifying an object that is at a distance. Another tweet also puts the focus on the ‘Bokeh’ Mode. The camera will be vertically aligned if one goes by Xiaomi’s tweets.

With Mi A1, one of the highlights was the camera, which came with a 12MP wide-angle and 12MP telephoto lens. Mi A1 had 2X zoom option as well. It will be interesting to see how the Mi A2 supports this feature, given that this is a supposed to be a rebranded version of the Mi 6X, which launched in China earlier this year. The Chinese version of the phone has a 12MP+20MP rear camera, but thereR m2m iot 17;s no telephoto lens that was used. It remains to be seen if Xiaomi has made some tweaks for the global variant.

Xiaomi’s tweets have also indicated about the possible colour options for Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite. It looks like Pink and blue colours could be added to the list as well. When Mi A1 launched in India last year, it came in a gold, black and rose gold version. Later a red colour variant was also added to the list.

According to the leaks, Mi A2 will have a Qualc Industrial IoT Products omm Snapdragon 660 processor, while Mi A2 Lite will have the older Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor. Mi A2 Lite will also have a notch design display and a bigger 4000 mAh battery, compared to a 3010 mAh battery on Mi A2. The two phones will be priced between Rs 14,000 to Rs 18,000 based on the leaks.

Nokia 6 (2018) is one of the four new Nokia-branded Android smartphones that HMD Globallaunched at Mobile World Congress 2018. While Nokia 8 Sirocco, the Nokia 7 Plus, and Nokia 1 are new handsets, the Nokia 6 (2018) isn’t exactly a totally new launch. The smartphone was unveiled in China earlier this year but at MWC the handset witnessed a global launch. The global variant of the new Nokia 6 (2018) is an Android One smartphone.

The Nokia 6 (2018) variant comes with competitive features, but there are several other smartphones in the segment which are already quite popular. Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi recently launched the Redmi Note 5 which packs solid specifications. The company also has an Android One smartphone called Mi A1. Incidentally, HMD Global also launched a 4GB variant of the original Nokia 6 in India recently. We take a look at the key differences between the new the Nokia 6 (2018), Nokia 6 (original), Xiaomi Mi A1, and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5.

HMD Global has launched the Nokia 6 (2018)with global average retail prices starting at EUR 279 (roughly Rs. 22,300). The India price for the Nokia 6 (2018) has not been announced as of now. The handset will come in three colour variants – Black/ Copper,White/ Iron and Blue/ Gold. It will come in two storage variants – 3GB/ 32GB and 4GB/ 64GB. The Nokia 6 (2018) will be available from early April.

In comparison, the Nokia 6, packing 3GB RAM, arrived in India in June last year with a price tag of Rs. 14,999. However, recently, HMD Global launched the 4GB variant in the country priced at Rs. 16,999. The new handset comes in a single colour option: Matte Black.

Xiaomi launched the Mi A1 back in September last year with a price tag of Rs. 14,999, though it received a price cut and is currently available at Rs. 13,999. This Android One smartphone is available for purchase through various online and offline channels in the country, including Flipkart, Mi.com, Sangeetha, Poorvika, Big C, LOT, and UniverCell among others. It comes in various colour options, including Black, Gold, Rose Gold, and the Special Edition Red.

Meanwhile, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 price in India begins at Rs. 9,999 for the 3GB RAM, 32GB storage variant and goes up to Rs. 11,999 for the 4GB RAM and 64GB storage variant. The phone comes in multiple colour options, including Black, Gold, Lake Blue, and Rose Gold. Coming to the other model, the Redmi Note 5 Pro price in India starts at Rs. 13,999 for the 4GB RAM, 64GB storage variant, while the 6GB RAM variant is available at Rs. 16,999. It comes in Black, Gold, Lake Blue, and Rose Gold colour options.

The Nokia 6 (2018) is an Android One offering running Android 8.0 Oreo. The smartphone will come in single or dual-SIM variants. It features a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) IPS display along with Gorilla Glass 5 protection. The handset is powered by the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 SoC, coupled with 3GB or 4GB RAM.

In terms of optics, the Nokia 6 (2018) sports a 16-megapixel rear camera with PDAF, a f/2.0 aperture, 1-micron pixels, dual-tone LED flash, and Zeiss optics. Additionally, it sports an 8-megapixel fixed focus camera with a f/2.0 aperture, and 1.12-micron pixels for selfies. It has 32GB or 64GB of inbuilt storage, expandable via microSD card (up to 128GB).

The Nokia 6 (2018) includes 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth v5.0, FM radio, GPS/ A-GPS, USB Type-C (v2.0), and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Finally, it is powered by a 3000mAh battery rated to deliver up to 16 hours of talk time, and up to 507 hours of standby time.

When it comes to the original Nokia 6, it was launched with Android Nougat but received an update to Android 8.0 Oreo recently. The smartphone features a 5.5-inch full-HD display with 2.5D curved Corning Gorilla Glass protection. It is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC. The smartphone has a 16-megapixel rear camera sensor and an 8-megapixel front camera sensor. Both sensors have a f/2.0 aperture.

The Nokia 6 4GB RAM variant comes with 64GB of inbuilt storage that is expandable via microSD card (up to 128GB). The handset has usual connectivity options such as 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS/ A-GPS, Micro-USB, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. There is a front-facing fingerprint sensor. The smartphone also has stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos audio enhancement. Besides, it packs a 3000mAh battery.

The dual-SIM Xiaomi Mi A1, on the other hand, was debuted with Android 7.1.2 Nougat but has already received an update to Android 8.0 Oreo. The smartphone sports a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) display with 16:9 aspect ratio and Corning Gorilla Glass protection. It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC under the hood, coupled with 4GB of RAM. Xiaomi has provided 64GB inbuilt storage on the Mi A1, expandable via microSD card (up to 128GB) that comes in a hybrid dual-SIM configuration. The smartphone has 4G VoLTE, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac, GPS/ A-GPS, USB Type-C, and a 3.5mm headphone jack on the connectivity front. There is also a front-facing fingerprint sensor that also works as a home button. Lastly, it packs a 3080mAh battery and has audio enhancements including a 10V smart power amplifier, DHS Audio Calibration Algorithm.

Meanwhile, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 smartphone comes with a 5.99-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1080×2160 pixels. It is powered by 2GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, coupled with 4GB of RAM. As far as the cameras are concerned, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 packs a 12-megapixel primary camera on the rear and a 5-megapixel front shooter for selfies. The phone packs 64GB of internal storage that can be expanded via microSD card.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 runs Android 7.0 and is powered by a 4000mAh non-removable battery. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, USB OTG, FM, 3G and 4G (with support for Band 40 used by some LTE networks in India). Sensors on the Redmi Note 5 include a magnetometer, proximity sensor, accelerometer, ambient light sensor, and gyroscope.

Xiaomi Mi A2 hands on: putting power before price

There are only two things you need to know about the Xiaomi Mi A2: it’s got a Xiaomi body with Google guts. That means the familiar industrial design, build quality and affordability of Xiaomi combined with stock-standard Android 8.1 Oreo and regular updates courtesy of the Android One program. For any MIUI haters out there, this is a dream mid-range Xiaomi phone. This is the Xiaomi Mi A2 hands on.

Last year’s Mi A1 was Xiaomi’s first dip in the Android One pool, and this year it’s making a splash with not one but two Mi A2 devices. While the Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite makes some familiar concessions to its lower price point like a slower processor and less exciting top memory configuration, it also packs a 25 percent larger battery than the Mi A2 proper, making it more of a battery-lover’s option than the performance- and camera-focused Mi A2. It also has a headphone jack and microSD expansion, two things the Mi A2 lacks, so there’s more going on here than the usual Lite recipe change.

For any MIUI haters out there, this is a dream mid-range Xiaomi phone.

Display

The Xiaomi Mi A2 display represents the first big difference from its predecessor. Where the Mi A1 screen came in at 5.5 inches, the Mi A2 packs a 5.99-inch IPS LCD into a footprint that’s only 3mm taller than the A1. That extra screen real estate is thanks to the switch to an 18:9 aspect ratio and smaller bezels all around.

The Mi A2 Lite display measures 5.84 inches and has a 19:9 aspect ratio because it includes a notch. Both devices feature Full HD+ resolution: 2,160 x 1,080 on the Mi A2 (403ppi) and 2,280 x 1,080 on the Mi A2 Lite (432ppi), giving the Lite variant a slightly higher pixel density and taller screen. I won’t pass judgment on the notch here, because you probably already have.

Both Mi A2 versions do away with capacitive buttons and now use on-screen navigation keys. Depending on where you stand on soft keys, this will either be a long-overdue enhancement or a total travesty. If you’ve used Xiaomi phones before, you’ll likely find it a little jarring that the back button now lives on the left rather than the right.

Design

Lovers of Xiaomi design will find much in the Mi A2 to like. Following in the footsteps of the design blueprint laid down by the Mi A1, there are precious few changes. The most notable is the re-orientation of the rear dual camera to a vertical layout and the migration of the flash to the center of the camera module.

There’s also a new color option: the Mi A2 comes in Black, Blue, Gold, Red and Rose Gold and the Mi A2 Lite in Black, Blue or Gold.

Gorilla Glass 5 covers the display, with a 2.5D edge that meets with the curved metal back plate. It has a soft touch feel that makes it grippier and less cold to the touch than some metal phones. A capacitive fingerprint scanner sits on the back of both devices.

Specs

With the software largely taken care of, the Mi A2 specs can really shine. Xiaomi’s love affair with the Snapdragon 625 continues in the Mi A2 Lite, but the Mi A2 steps up to the 600 series. An octa-core Snapdragon 660 (clocked at 2.2GHz) with Adreno 512 GPU will be very welcome news to fans of high-performance mid-range gaming, while the battery-sipping 625 should help drag the Mi A2 Lite’s battery life out considerably.

The Mi A2 comes in three configurations: 4GB of RAM with 32 or 64GB of storage and a 6GB of RAM version with 128GB of internal storage. The Mi A2 Lite has 3GB of RAM with 32GB of storage or 4GB with 64GB.

The Mi A2 Lite supports dual-SIM with a separate microSD card slot but the Mi A2 only has room for two nano-SIM cards. While the Mi A2 does have a higher memory configuration than the Lite, its base model and mid-spec option would still benefit from the addition of microSD expansion. The reasoning for this is likely that the Mi A2 is based on the microSD-less Mi 6x in China and the Mi A2 Lite is based off the Redmi 6 Pro, which does include microSD expansion.

The Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite support Bluetooth 5.0, have an IR blaster (you’ll have to download a compatible app though) and mono bottom-firing speaker. Sadly, the Mi A2 lacks a 3.5mm headphone port but the Mi A2 Lite still has a headphone jack.

The Mi A2 packs a 3,000mAh battery with USB Type-C and support for USB 2.0. The Mi A2 Lite bumps that up to a 4,000mAh cell and switches to a micro-USB connection, but both support 5V/2A fast charging via the included brick.

Camera

The camera is really where it’s at on the Mi A2. One of the most requested improvements to the original Mi A1 was in the camera department, and Xiaomi has thrown some serious numbers at it. A dual camera setup on the back pairs a 12MP f/1.75 lens with 1.25-micron pixels with a 20MP f/1.75 lens for better low light performance. The lenses share the same aperture, so this is made possible by pixel binning four one-micron pixels on the 20MP sensor into 2-micron Super Pixels. The resulting photo is then upscaled back to a 20MP image.

Some fans might miss the wide/tele combo of the Mi A1, but better low light photography is arguably the better choice.

The front-facing camera on the Mi A2 delivers the same Sony IMX376 sensor at 20MP with f/2.2 aperture and support for HDR and Super Pixels for low light scenarios. There’s a “daylight” quality 4500K selfie-light and there’s portrait and AI beauty modes to play around with. Video stabilization is supported, time-lapse and slow-motion modes are included, and the shortcut via a double press of the power button quickly launches the camera. The front-facing camera shoots video at 1080p and the main camera at up to 4K (with stabilization).

The Mi A2 Lite drops things down a little. The dual camera setup pairs a 12MP and 5MP sensor, with a 5MP front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture. If you’re all about photography then you’re going to have to spring for the Mi A2, but if battery life is your gold standard then the Mi A2 Lite will likely serve you better.

Software

The Mi A1 was in the top 10 best selling smartphones globally in February 2018, five months after release, so it's fair to say the lack of MIUI isn't holding the A series back.

As with all Android One devices, there’s nothing much to see here. Just pure, unadulterated Android 8.1 Oreo with a grand total of four Xiaomi apps: Feedback, Mi Drop, the camera app and a more fully featured File Manager than the Files app from Google.

While some people might not like the sameness of Android One devices on the software front, preferring the additional features of MIUI, for many, faster updates and security patch support will win out. The Mi A1 was in the top 10 best selling smartphones globally in February 2018, says Xiaomi, five months after release, so it’s fair to say the lack of MIUI isn’t holding the A series back.

Xiaomi assures me the Mi A2 and A2 Lite will be updated to Android P as soon as it is available for 600 series chipsets. There’s something slightly odd but undeniably reassuring about stock Android on a Xiaomi device. It lets any software concerns vanish into the background with the knowledge that Google has things under control, allowing Xiaomi’s excellent hardware to shine. Pricing and final thoughts

The Xiaomi Mi A2 price starts at 249 euros (~$290) for the 4GB/32GB memory option, or 299 euros (~$350) for 4GB/64GB and 349 euros (~$408) for the 6GB/128GB option. The Mi A2 Lite aims to serve those wanting a Xiaomi Android One device at a slightly lower price point, at 179 euros (~$209) for 3GB/32GB memory and 229 euros (~$268) for 4GB/64GB. Both devices will be available in Spain and 40 other markets starting in late July.

Given Xiaomi’s permanent commitment to a five percent profit margin, prices like these are admirable and (seemingly) sustainable. Bringing the reliability and security of a stock Android experience to the mid- and lower mid-range is commendable and Xiaomi looks to have done it again. We can safely say Xiaomi has launched what looks like a solid package on paper to take on other contenders under the same price bracket, including the Honor 9 Lite 4GB RAM variant.

The base variant of the new Redmi Note handset has also apparently influenced other smartphone companies to bring new 4GB RAM models to survive in the market. HMD Global is the first such company, launching the Nokia 6 4GB RAM, 64GB storage variant in the Indian market to compete against the Redmi Note 5 Pro. Moreover, it is interesting to see that the new Xiaomi phone is making the competition tougher for the Mi A1, which is an existing hot-selling model by the Chinese brand, launched last year in collaboration with Google as a new Android One handset.

We take a look at the Redmi Note 5 Pro price in India, specifications, and features and compare them with those of the Mi A1, Nokia 6, Honor 9 Lite to help you decide the best option for you.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro price in India is set at Rs. 13,999 for the variant with 4GB RAM and Rs. 16,999 for the 6GB RAM option. Both variants will go on sale beginning February 22 via Flipkart, Mi Home, and Mi.com. After some time, they will also be available for purchase through Xiaomi’s offline retail partners in the country. The smartphone comes with an ultra-slim case bundled, while Jio is giving a cashback worth Rs. 2,200 and 100 percent additional data. Further, colour options for the Redmi Note 5 Pro include Black, Gold, Lake Blue, and Rose Gold colours.

Xiaomi Mi A1 Review

The Nokia 6, packing 3GB RAM, arrived in India in June last year with a price tag of Rs. 14,999. But its 4GB variant, which HMD Global has just launched in the country, comes at Rs. 16,999 – the same as that of the Redmi Note 5 6GB RAM variant’s price in India. The new Nokia 6 model will be exclusively available for purchase via Flipkart starting February 20. The company is not offering any goodies on the new launch, but there is an exchange discount worth Rs. 2,000. The handset will come in a single colour option: Matte Black.

Coming towards the Honor 9 Lite, this new smartphone by Huawei brand Honor was launched in India last month. The Honor 9 Lite 4GB RAM variant is available at Rs. 14,999 via Flipkart and comes in three colour options, including Sapphire Blue, Glacier Grey, and Midnight Black. It comes with a complimentary back cover, and customers making orders through Citibank credit and debit cards are entitled to receive 10 percent cashback.

The dual-SIM Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro runs Android Nougat-based MIUI 9. The smartphone features a 5.99-inch full-HD (1080×2160 pixels) display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, 450-nit brightness, 83 percent NTSC colour gamut, and 2.5D curved glass. It is powered by an all-new, octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC, which is clocked at up to 1.8GHz, paired with Adreno 509 GPU. The new processor is touted to make the smartphone the “fastest Redmi Note ever” with an AnTuTu score of 109,692.

For taking pictures and recording videos, the Redmi Note 5 Pro has a dual rear camera setup that comprises a 13-megapixel primary image sensor with an f/2.2 aperture and 1.25-micron pixel size, while a 5-megapixel image sensor sits alongside the primary sensor with an f/2.0 aperture and 1.12-micron pixel size. There is also an LED flash module that accompanies the rear camera setup. On the front, the smartphone has a 20-megapixel Sony IMX376 image sensor with an LED selfie flash. There is 64GB of onboard storage that is expandable via microSD card (up to 128GB) in a hybrid dual-SIM format.

In terms of connectivity, the Redmi Note 5 Pro has 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth, 3.5mm headphone jack, and Micro-USB. There is a fingerprint sensor on the back that supports multiple fingerprint profiles. The handset packs a 4000mAh battery that is claimed to deliver up to 14 hours of continuous video playback. The battery supports 5V/2A fast charging technology. Besides, the handset measures 158.6×75.4×8.05mm and weighs 181 grams.

The dual-SIM (Nano) Xiaomi Mi A1, on the other side, was debuted with Android 7.1.2 Nougat but received an update to Android 8.0 Oreo last month. The smartphone has a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) display with 16:9 aspect ratio and Corning Gorilla Glass protection. It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC under the hood, coupled with 4GB of RAM. The handset has a dual rear camera setup with two 12-megapixel image sensors – one in 1.25-micron pixel size and with a wide-angle, f/2.2 aperture lens and the other one in 1-micron pixel size and with an f/2.6 aperture telephoto lens. The camera sensor also offers 2x optical zoom and features such as a proprietary Portrait Mode. Also, a 5-megapixel camera sensor is available on the front with a real-time beautification mode.

Similar to the Xiaomi Mi A1, the dual-SIM (Nano) Nokia 6 was launched with Android Nougat but received an update to Android 8.0 Oreo recently. The smartphone features a 5.5-inch full-HD display with 2.5D curved Corning Gorilla Glass protection. It is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC. The smartphone has a 16-megapixel rear camera sensor and an 8-megapixel front camera sensor. Both sensors have an f/2.0 aperture.

Contrary to the other three handsets, the dual-SIM (Nano) Honor 9 Lite runs Android 8.0 Oreo-based EMUI 8.0 out of the box and features a 5.65-inch full-HD+ (1080×2160 pixels) IPS display with 18:9 aspect ratio. The smartphone is powered by an octa-core Huawei HiSilicon Kirin 659 SoC and has four camera sensors on the front and back sides. The dual camera setups on the front and back have 13-megapixel primary and 2-megapixel secondary camera sensors alongside a rear-facing LED flash and PDAF system.

The Honor 9 Lite 4GB variant has 64GB of inbuilt storage that is expandable via microSD card (up to 256GB) in a hybrid dual-SIM configuration. The handset has 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth, GPS/ A-GPS, Micro-USB with OTG support, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. There is also a rear-facing fingerprint sensor. At last, there is a 3000mAh battery that is claimed to deliver a talk time of up to 20 hours on a 3G network.

Top Budget Smartphones of 2017 under Rs. 15,000

iPhone X and 8 might be the most searched smartphones according to Google trends data but that doesn't even give a glimpse of what the majority of the smartphone using population was hooked on to throughout 2017.

A recent study conducted by the Omidyar Network notes a sizeable increase in the chunk of Indian population using smartphones. Quite evidently, more and more people are switching to hi-technology handsets from their basic, old-school precursors.

Interestingly, the number of people with basic cellphone devices continues to shrink, thanks to more and more handset-manufacturing giants rolling out premium smartphones that don't burn consumers pockets anymore.

Undeniably, the Moto G series has been one of the most popular ones unveiled by Motorola. Moto G5 and G5 Plus were launched earlier this year and emerged as hot contenders in a fight to disrupt the budget smartphone market in the country.

The device comes with a fingerprint sensor, located in front; a 12-megapixel front camera with phase detection autofocus, dual-LED dual-tone flash and a 5-megapixel secondary camera.

Moto G5 Plus comes in two variants 32/64 GB, 2/4 GB RAM and 32 GB, 3 GB RAM with expandable memory up to 256 GB via microSD.

The handset was launched at a competitive price of Rs. 14,999 and is currently available for an online purchase for around Rs. 13,999 (32 GB variant).

The device came with Android 7.0 (Nougat), upgradable to Android 8.0 (Oreo) and runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 625.

Honor 7X

Huawei's much-anticipated budget smartphone launched earlier this month and also went on an exclusive Amazon sale on December 7.

Honor 7X succeeds the popular Honor 6X and runs on Huawei's exclusive Kirin 659 processor. The device is available with 4GB/3GB RAM in variants offering 32GB/64GB internal storage expandable to 256 GB via microSD.

The handset boasts of a 3340 mAh battery and runs on Android 7.0 Nougat. Honor 7X comes with a 16-megapixel primary camera with phase detection, autofocus, LED flash and an 8-megapixel secondary camera.

The 4GB/32GB variant of the device is available online for around Rs. 12,999.

Xiaomi Mi A1

The budget-bet from this year's Xiaomi kitty comes with a full-HD 5.5-inch display, 4GB RAM, and 64GB storage expandable to 128 GB, and a 3080 mAh battery.

The handset runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 and boasts of dual cameras -- 5-megapixel in the front and dual 12-megapixel on the back.

The Mi A1 comes with Android 7.1.2 (Nougat) with a planned upgrade to Android 8.0 (Oreo) and Android One.

The device was released in September this year and can now be bought online for around Rs. 12,999/13,999.

Xiaomi has also launched a Special Edition Red variant in India priced at Rs. 13,999. The limited edition device will be available from December 20 through the official Mi website, Flipkart, Mi Home and partner stores.

Lenovo K8 Plus

The device comes in 3 GB/16 GB (expandable to 256 GB) variants with 1.4 GHz octa-core processor, Qualcomm Snapdragon 430; 13 MP front and 5 MP rear camera.

On the battery front, Moto G lags behind with 2800 mAH.

The device runs on Android Nougat with a planned update for Android Oreo.

Moto G was launched in February this year and can be bought for as low as Rs. 9999 online.
