Tumblr media
Bracelet Matilde Poulat with 10 strands of turquoise beads.

I'm only 20% through Silver Nitrate but I love how Silvia Moreno-Garcia's books are basically, "Thing You Already Loved (Mexican Edition)." Love mushrooms and Gothic Horror? Boom, Mexican Gothic. Love 20th Century Occultism and old horror movies? Boom, Silver Nitrate. It's like the first time I had mangoes with tajin on them. LIke, "I already liked this thing but WOW."

Sometimes I wonder if in hindsight I made a mistake by reading Mexican Gothic first because so far Silvia Moreno-Garcia's other books have yet to compare to the pure fascination, revulsion, anxiety, excitement, and absolute love that book inspired in me. Like, did I just start with the absolute peak of this author's talents and spoil the rest of her body of work for myself? The other stuff I've read from her isn't even close to bad, more like above average to good...it's just not been the lightning in a bottle that was Mexican Gothic for me thus far.
