I originally did this for Mermay but then lost the motivation for it. I usually do one piece for Mermaid Month but I was a wee bit overwhelmed this year.

Not going to lie, I’m not impressed by it and it’s a reminder that I really need to work on anatomy

🌸｡*ﾟ+. Excuse me as I casually slide in some older art of a one-off design thing I made for Mermay in 2021 ♡ featuring aspiringroleplays's boy on the right there. ANYWAYS, moving onto the AU! I am lazy and reuse the same lore for all my mer-AUs, specifically because I like what I have for them? But STORYWISE... let's see what we can come up with~

Merfolk have long since been prey to hunters, whether for personal purposes such as marriage or pleasure, or monetary purposes for display and show. There have been other reasons for hunting Merfolk, however, and it is perhaps the most cruel of them all: Their scales are sharper than any blade, and their tears solidify into jewels. This means that many a merperson has suffered through the torture of being forced to shed tears, as well as having their scales individually torn from their tails.

Through the age of pirating and seafaring, Merfolk have grown more and more scarce, believed to be hunted into extinction-- or so the humans thought.

No, the Merfolk only learned from their past mistakes. Many merely used their ability to shift and walk on land in order to blend into the population. Others had migrated away from human settlements, abandoning their usual domains in favor of seeking secluded islands, and in some cases, deeper waters.

Riku was one of such kind, his ancestors having sought refuge deeper beneath the waves, where the light could never reach. The brightest light the young flashlight mer has seen was the light glowing from his own person and family. That is, until he grew curious after seeing a deep diver near their home. Having been warned of getting closer to their kind, Riku was made to promise he would swim the other way the next time he saw them.

His desire to know the unknown was far too great, however, and once he spotted them again exploring the remains of a shipwreck, Riku gave pursuit after they made to leave.

He was caught.

His captors weren't ruthless, however. In discovering the true nature Merfolk, they struck him a deal: He would make them a fortune by merely existing for show, and in turn, they would teach him the ways of life on land. They had even granted him freedom to come and go to and from the sea, so long as he made it to his appointed hour to be showcased to millions upon millions of people.

The deal is good, so he feels.

Little did he know that with one step too far, or any change of plans on his captor's part, that his freedom would cut short with the mere snap of a finger, and Riku wasn't so clever as he thought. With how Merfolk couldn't speak above water, it wasn't as if he could speak for himself if... no, when the moment came...

Riku's outfit is sort of inspired by his outfit in kh3 but I only mildly committed hehe

Riku was SURPRISED by the suggestion, brows rising high upon his forehead as he listened to her proposal. Visit her garden?... Was that somewhere under the sea? It sounded to him as though she had been working on something important for quite a while.

"I would... really love to see it, actually." He replied through a smile, gaze curiously roaming across the items she set before the two of them. A STRANGE array, he couldn't deny. "Are these... trinkets going to help do that?" He couldn't help but inquire.

He neared her better, ignoring the waves that rushed up to then drench him in the process. Riku was used to seawater, more than others can say. Coming to sit nearby, he watched on in GREAT interest, gaze lifting and dropping every so often to watch her and the items between them.

"Hey! I was hoping to find you!"

Who better to test her magic on? She'd been studying hard, practicing even harder, and she was completely certain that her enchantment would work. All she needed was someone to try it out, who better than a friend? Pulling herself slightly onto the sand, that satchel was set down.

"I have this really great idea!"

Digging into the satchel, she pulls out a ring of seaweed. A necklace, adorned with sparkling jewels, and shells.

"If it works, you'll be the first human to ever visit my garden! Wanna try it?"

I’m just imagining the Destiny trio going to Camp Half Blood and all of the gods INSTANTLY fighting over who gets to “claim” who. Because these three kids have SO MUCH glory already. So here’s my headcanons of who’s fighting over who and why.

Sora:

Poseidon: I think it’s clear that this one’s mine! He turns into a dolphin boy after all!

Morpheus: not so fast.

Poseidon: Are you really going to try and take him from me?

Morpheus: he has clear ties to the dreaming realm, which means I do have some claim to him.

Poseidon: he turns into a /merman/.

Morpheus: which is nice. But can he travel to different worlds in his fish form?

Poseidon: DOLPHIN.

Morpheus: uh huh.

Hypnos: he did sleep for an entire year-

Morpheus: he did! Once!! You know what he’s done several times? DREAM ENTIRE WORLDS AND VISIT OTHER PEOPLE’S DREAMS.

Aphrodite: He also has ties to people’s hearts, therefore he should be mine 💕

Poseidon: nuh uh.

Aphrodite: plus have you seen the love triangle? His love for his friends is his entire motivation, and he uses the bonds of love for his friends to create entire pathways to new worlds! He’s mine 🥰

Morpheus: I’ll share him. He has ties through dreams AND his heart.

Aphrodite: oh? And what’s it called when he goes into thsi dream world?

Morpheus: ….

Aphrodite: go on. Say it.

Morpheus: Dive to the Heart…

Aphrodite: see!

Morpheus: …

Morpheus: *claims him anyways*

Riku:

Aphrodite: mine :)

Eris: I believe im more suited for him.

Aphrodite: mine :)

Eris: he had conflicts with his friend and was even willing to kill him.

Ares: murder? 👀

Eris: he didn’t start a war.

Ares: questionable

Eris: how so?

Ares: he lead an army of heartless to ravage the worlds

Eris: that was his mentor

Ares: Ah! But he was given control over them! Making him a general.

Eris: still not a war.

Ares: he was violent

Eris: He had /conflicts/

Aphrodite: and those conflict’s source was his love for his partners :)

Eris: they aren’t dating

Aphrodite: they will :)

Ares: *backs down out of respect for his love cause clearly Eris isn’t gonna win*.

Kairi:

Apollo: MINE.

Persephone: NUH UH. BACK OFF.

Apollo: She’s literally made of pure light she’s MINE.

Iris: In that case she’s mines

Apollo: eXCUSE ME??

Persephone: you’re excused 🙃

Apollo: Go to Tartarus

Persephone: ?

Apollo: yeah yeah can’t use that phrase with you. She’s still mine.

Iris: is she made of sunshine? No. She’s made of ✨light✨, which is MY department.

Apollo: you’re the goddess of rainbows-

Iris: which is the entire spectrum of light!!

Persephone: she has flower motifs!! And has died several times! That’s MY domain!

Apollo: You’re claiming her because she has FLOWERS on her sword?

Kairi: keyblade-

Apollo: DONT interrupt me kid the gods are talking.

Iris: look! You’re ALREADY neglecting and avoiding her!

Persephone: you’re out of the race

Iris: agreed. Now Persephone shall we split custody?

Persephone: I’m already split between seasons and realms I’m not splitting my share of the Princess child.

Iris: Ah. We do this the hard way then.

Aether: if we speak of light, my chances far outshine yours little goddess.

Iris:… well she had those interactions with that girl Olette-

Persephone: you aren’t the goddess of gays just because they adopted your symbol

Iris: *pitifully joins Apollo*

Aether: so as a child of light-

Sneaking away almost daily from his pod, he visits his island to practice essential skills every young merman needs to know. However, one stormy day, a boat comes close to his shores and he has to figure out if he's willing to risk it all to save this hapless human that's fallen in his waters.

His mother always told him about the danger of humans. Humans had nets that snared them, spears that stabbed through them, and they would mercilessly kill any unwary merfolk who happened to cross their path. After his father was caught and murdered by a passing fishing boat when he was still barely a pup, that knowledge was drilled even harder into him. Riku grew up having a healthy fear of humans who bled the seas dry with their insatiable hunger. 

Omens. 

His mother had explained the word at one point when a much younger Riku had once begged to see the surface. Merfolk were omens of ill fortune to humans, and after centuries of being slaughtered, eaten, captured and sold, they often stuck to deep waters that humans could only dream of traversing. 

It was safe.

Here, in the deep waters, they were safe.

Using this place as my notepad once again so I don't forget:

Sora, Riku & Kairi going to Neverland but being separated on arrival. Peter Pan finds Riku & Kairi and informs them Sora might need some help, and as he leads them to him, Sora's found at the Mermaid Lagoon in his merman form being doted on covered in pearls etc.

I’ve literally never seen a soriku little mermaid au where Riku is Ariel which is crazy bc, between Riku and Sora, clearly Riku is the one most in her position, even outside of struggling with a love that feels impossible. Riku’s like Ariel in the way he’s more curious about the outside world than his peers, feels trapped in his world and unhappy with his life, and does something incredibly reckless and dangerous, trusting the wrong people, in a desperate attempt to break free and get what he wants. Riku also at one point has long, pretty hair perfect for a mermaid au like gd what’s it gonna take to see merman Riku pining for sailor Sora. It’s what Howard Ashman would want.
