Apologies if you've already done a post on this and I've just missed it, but can I ask for your take on the pyjamas worn by the cast of interview with vampire? I mean technically they're not a 100% necessary item, but just from a quick look there seems to be a lot of variety and they do change over the series
ok, i’m delighted by the specificity of this question, and it turns out that i have a VERY extensive answer.
there’s a lot of sleepwear in IWTV due to the volume of bedroom/coffin scenes, and like any other outfit, these costumes are shaped by characterization and historical period. for instance claudia initially wears a long, modest, frilly nightgown - an old-fashioned style that plays into her girlish doll wardrobe purchased by louis and lestat. however her sleepwear matures over the years, including a trendy lace nightdress with bloomers in the 1920s (note the rectangular silhouette), and a pink padded jacket/pastel robe outfit in 1940s paris. she's following contemporary trends while charting a visible trajectory from child to adult.
when i wrote about the Théâtre des Vampires coven costumes, i noted that while their wardrobes share certain themes (ie. monochrome patterns and stripes), they each have specific personal tastes. that holds true for sleepwear. in the S2 finale we see the coven going to bed in their coffins, with Eglee in a gorgeous (maybe 1940s?) robe, Celeste in a striped pajama suit reflecting her 1920s-30s cabaret style, and Armand in a plain grey set of prison jammies because he's Suffering.
of course, the star pajama outfits all belong to Louis and Lestat, playing into their wealthy domestic aesthetic in S1. they receive multiple bedroom/coffin scenes, and Lestat's gold Leyendecker robe is obviously iconic.
touching on the historical side of things for a moment, pajamas (as in a matching buttondown top and loose pants) were popularized in the western world in the 19th century, as a repurposed south asian import - kind of like how banyans became trendy among the upper classes in 18th century england. this was when loungewear started to catch on as a concept, both in terms of dressing gowns and smoking jackets (which you could wear while socializing at home) and actual pajamas, which became unisex in the 1920s.
back in his human life in the 18th century, Lestat probably slept naked or wore a shapeless white nightgown (and possibly a nightcap, the sexiest of garments). but in New Orleans he adopts Louis' lifestyle, which involves a luxurious wardrobe of fashionable menswear. they're both into shopping and looking good, and i think they enjoy the ritual of getting dressed together each night.
(i also have a personal theory that Lestat may prefer to sleep fully clothed because his formative traumatic memory involves waking up naked in the dark. after all, he doesn't need pajamas to stay warm, and he doesn't have a recent habit of wearing them in his human life like Louis does. then again, maybe he just enjoys having a new outfit for every occasion!)
in Dubai, we only get one scene (iirc) with Louis and Armand in their pajamas, lying in bed wearing outfits that tie into the striped prison bar imagery of their bedroom. Armand is in warmer brown tones (like his Paris wardrobe) while Louis is in black and grey, like the rest of his Dubai outfits. i'd also note that this is the one place where they're genuine in private, meaning that they aren't putting on a show for Daniel. so this is potentially Armand's most relaxed costume in the present day.
the fact that they're wearing this kind of old-school sleepwear feels very appropriate for their whole deal, imo. in the 21st century, a lot of people just sleep in boxers and t-shirts or whatever. there's a slightly 20th century vibe to wearing a full set of buttondown pajamas, and Armand's outfit reads as more stylish (and possibly more wealthy) than your average millennial guy. which makes sense! they're old men.
i think we can assume that every single thing in their Dubai home is ferociously expensive, even when it doesn't need to be. considering the way Louis gives himself a modern makeover in the finale, i do wonder if he'll switch over to sleeping in t-shirts etc next season, or if he'll stick with variations of the same sleepwear he wore during his mortal life.
p.s. all of my iwtv design posts are available on this tag!

25. Showing up injured to their enemies house for mattdrai
In the past ten years of this job -- this wild, irrational, inexplicable job -- Leon has found himself in many cities. The casinos of Macau. The skyscrapers of Dubai. The catacombs of Paris. Once, memorably, sneaking out of Copenhagen in a shipping container. Many of those cities have been beautiful, cosmopolitan, exciting, even if Leon had spent most of his time there gladhanding at galas and running over rooftops and trying to shoot armed men in the forehead without being shot himself.
Leon could not say the same about St. Louis.
St. Louis is hot, sticky, aggressively American in a way that sets Leon's back teeth on edge. The streets are too wide and the trucks are too large and the beer is too undrinkable to contemplate. All of this is bad enough for Leon to never want to darken its door again.
But that's not all of it. No, not only is Leon stuck with the humidity and the mosquitos and the crowds he feels ill-equipped to blend into, he's also been dropped into an absolute shit show of a mission, and has no idea how he's getting out of it.
It wasn't bad to start with. It was supposed to be easy. Walk into a specific bank downtown with his flawlessly forged passport, retrieve the contents of a specific safety deposit box, catch the next flight to Frankfurt. Simple. Clean. Even the rookies could do it.
Except the flawlessly forged passport apparently had forged a second time, by somebody else. Except that same somebody had already retrieved the safety deposit box. Except by the time Leon had dealt with the other Mr. Mueller and retrieved the flash drive he came for, he had a bullet in his arm, a compromised identity, a smashed earpiece, and nowhere to retreat.
Nowhere, except an address he'd seen once when rifling through the files on his superior's desks, stopped dead by the photograph stapled to the top. An address that leads to a house in suburb, picket fence perfect, with window boxes and a nondescript sedan and five hidden cameras on the front side alone.
Leon stumbles out of the car he stole, limping up the front path. Before he's even made it up the porch, the front door is already opening.
Matthew Tkachuk stares at him. He looks strangely rumpled out of his neat black suits, in only gray sweatpants and a t-shirt and one hand reaching for the small of his back.
Leon opens the hand that has been clenched around his bicep for the past twenty minutes, letting go of the rough field dressing. "There wasn't anywhere else," he says.
For a long moment, Matthew stares at him. Leon stares back, hope draining out of him as fast as his own blood.
Then Matthew takes a step to the side. "Come on," he says, and lets Leon in.

"especially given, y'know, what Sam wears in his day-to-day lol, I get the impression off the rack doesn't do much for him"
I don't usually pay close attention to men's fashion, so I was wondering if it was normal to have a shirt that seemed to fit well in the shoulders have SO much extra fabric around the waist lol
Do you remember any specific things that Carol said re: Sam? :) I've really loved reading her dives into the Louis/Claudia/Lestat Mardi Gras costumes and Louis and Claudia's 2.1 costumes.
Haha, it's kind of hard to tell, because the oversize fit for men is definitely in fashion right now, but his proportions do end up leaving him with so much fabric around the waist - he ends up looking a little concave when he sits back. I don't think it helps that he seems to like big, loose jackets too a lot of the time.
Carol's so great! I don't know if she's talked specifically about dressing Sam, but she talked a lot about the costuming for Louis, Lestat and Claudia in her AMC Q&A after s1 aired, and a bit in her more recent interview with TV Guide. They're both worth reading - the second one I found particularly interesting in what she said about Armand's neck always being exposed as a sign that he's at the top of the food chain and knows it (really contextualises a lot of the choices for other characters too!) and that Louis' muted style in Dubai is something Armand would see as Louis being able to relax with him, but is really a sign of Armand's control because Louis as a character likes, and is influenced by fashion.
Which feeds so nicely into the things she said about him and Lestat with their s1 looks in the AMC interviews. My favourite bits:
For Louis starting out, he had several iconic looks. His fashion showed how he was struggling between two sides of himself when Lestat found him. He had a Booker T. Washington look, a look that showcases the entrepreneurial spirit and celebration of education and Black business owners, and it was a more austere look. Then for his nightlife look, I was inspired by Black vaudeville. Not what the men were wearing on stage, but what the men were wearing in their lives, which Louis would have been aware of. They were extremely dapper men, and they had a celebrity air to them. In order to survive, Louis has to be impeccable. He has to have a showmanship about him that serves as a layer within his defense mechanisms. There were so many pieces to the puzzle that got us to where we were visually with both of Louis and Lestat. For Lestat, he's coming from the mid-to-late 1700s and that was during a real explosion of dandy fashion for men. It's like Beau Brummel, the most widely known male dandy fashion plate. As we move forward with Lestat, I looked at icons like Rudolph Valentino. We have to remember that Lestat is coming from a time when clothing was a lot more restrictive. He wears modern clothes, but they almost fit him like corsetry, even his suits.
And another quote below the cut!
As we got to know these characters, as the work progressed with Sam [Reid] and Jacob [Anderson], we would present them with different styles that I felt "this could be Louis," "this could be Lestat." We reached a point where in fittings it was like we instinctively knew "in this time period this is how Louis would actually wear it" and "this is how Lestat would wear it." So just in working with the actors, so much presented itself in what direction to go with each of the men. There was some really fun stuff of course, like when they first meet. They have very distinct looks and then Louis pulls Lestat into the present day, right? They have this moment – it's like their first honeymoon moment – of their friendship where Lestat is very influenced by Louis's fashion and he's going to Louis's tailor. They really feel in sync and that moment is largely illustrated by a very famous menswear illustrator, J.C. Leyendecker. He made famous the Arrow Shirt Man and he was the male standard of beauty. He became such a big thing that he sold millions of shirts just because everyone wanted to be that man in his illustrations. And the whole first two episodes, their style sense in many ways is a love letter to Leyendecker. Some things are just perfectly pulled from – like their formalwear, their tuxedos that they wear to the opera in 1917, and the black pinstripe suit with the green tie and the white boutonniere that Lestat wears to the du Lac family home for dinner – those are from a Leyendecker illustration. The thing that was so amazing about Leyendecker himself, was that the Arrow Shirt Man, his model, they fell in love and it was just a beautiful love story between these two men that they could not be public with. So, to throw in very pointed Leyendecker references in places of great struggle for Louis and Lestat was amazing. What I always think of as their second honeymoon is in the '20's when Claudia is running wild, and you see them and they’re like these two fabulous bachelor dads. That was a lot of fun! There's this one image – and there's been a fair amount of fan art – with Lestat in the cardigan sweater. That was so tongue-in-cheek! They're the perfect two dads with their little wild child. Putting those looks together was amazing. It was all about following the story and ripping them apart, and then putting them back together, and then ripping them apart and putting them back together again.
#there's just so many thoughtful talented people making this show#always obsessed with the idea of corsetry playing into all of lestat's clothes though#amc interview with the vampire#iwtv press#welcome to my ama

I need someone to write in detail about how the current flex culture is both similar to and different from the culture of, say, Victorian England. I understand, from reading many, many Victorian stories over the years, by which I mean stories written during the Victorian era, why displaying wealth was so critical. If you didn't display wealth, the general assumption would be that you didn't have it. You'd be less likely to get business or loans, less likely for family members to contract advantageous marriages, etc. So you paid for your daughter to wear a different gown every time she went out, and you paid for a fancy carriage, and you hosted dinners for people you didn't enjoy, and so on, because you quite literally had to. Sure, you could choose to retire to a country estate, but everyone would assume it was because you were broke. Right? Or am I SUPER wrong? I don't know! I'm not a historian!
But these days--like, look at the luxury jewelry market. There are so many options out there to spend 20 grand on a necklace, you could drown in them. Many of them are not branded, and many are also just not that interesting or distinctive. You cannot expect someone to read your wealth instantly the way they could when someone would assess in one glance: velvet? silk? or cotton? The color of dye is no longer legally regulated. I can wear Tyrian purple if I'm broke as shit. Gold-plated jewelry is visually indistinguishable from solid gold jewelry at a fraction of the cost. Good fakes of any imaginable high-end bag or shoe exist. Items, themselves, are no long inherently signifiers of wealth the way they were pre-industrialization, because we have reached a point where it is comparatively very easy to acquire things.
So what purpose is the designer jewelry serving now? And designer clothes? When I'm sure there are many, many items that rich men and women could not tell apart at a glance, and there is not (I'm sorry) some kind of magical quality differential that makes them recognizably high-end. (Watch the Tanner Leatherstein channel on YouTube to have your ideas about high-end leather products deconstructed before your eyes.)
Like, I'm sure some things operate exactly the same. I'm sure there's a narrow elite in Silicon Valley and I'm sure they recognize each other's wealth signifiers effortlessly. The same super-expensive "casual" sneakers and t-shirts. But what happens when those people end up at a party with Bostonian old money??? And that's just two of the ultra-rich possibilities out there! There are different signifiers for Indian families, and for Chinese families, and for Dubai oil money vs Brazilian vs English--like, any culture has their ultra-wealthy and the signifiers they use can be wildly different!
YouTube has a lot of videos about flex culture, but these all seem to focus on how detrimental it is. Which it is! It's terrible! Don't spend your money on a designer thing for being designer as if that's going to GET you something. It's not. Especially if you are not in the kind of circles where that type of wealth signifier is useful.
Anyway, if you know of any good explorations of this, let me know, because it has REALLY been on my mind lately. And with the COVID, I have nothing but time.*
*and body aches

Hi there. Hope you're doing well. So your page was recommended for me and I've been reading some of your posts. And it made me just want to share my two cent with you. I'm like new to BTS and this fan base, and by no means am I a conspiracy theorist or anything. But with this news of Tae dating has me thinking. Obviously, no body knows what's happening besides those involved and those in the know. But based on all the videos and news out there I do think T is bi. It has me thinking about the dinner date he and JK had in NY together. Just the two of them no other members and the others didn't know about it until JK posted those pics. The other instances was when JK came back from Dubai and he and Tae stayed in a luxury hotel together for a few days. I mean do straight men do that with their fiends? I don't know, but me being a woman I've never done those things with my friends. Another instance come to mind is T always doing the Leslie Cheng dance moves. I know you don't need to be gay to love or be a fan of LC, but like all the time?
Also, if you watch the Paris video again, when they were all at the bridge about to go on their walk, Tae turned around a few times and it seems like he was looking straight at the photographer, not his manager, but the man recording him. Again, not a conspiracy theorist, just making observations. If he was dating he could make a simple statement like all other celebs have. But they kept quiet for so long. And I don't believe the statement from their companies saying they don't know anything about their idols private lives. They know everything about their idols lives! They always have people around them. Stop lying and be truthful.
That's all I wanted to say. Whatever the truth is I hope everyone respects them and let people live and love. Have a good one!
Hi anon!
I’m well, thank you for asking.
You are not a conspiracy theorist because you happen to think two people love each other. I know that’s a term anti’s like to throw around, but it doesn’t apply here. It’s a fandom, people speculate, that’s it. Closeting is also something that has been proven to happen all to often in showbizz, so also because of that.. not a conspiracy theory.
I have no idea what Tae identifies as. I do know he has hinted at being queer, so to me that certainly opens up the possibility of him dating men. To me two men going to a restaurant together or staying at a hotel together isn’t necessarily a romantic thing. I certainly have done that with my female friends. I think it depends on one’s culture as to wether that is out of the ordinary or not. In my country these things happen a lot and nobody thinks anything of it really. What it is a sign of though is how often Tae and Jk single each other out and that they have a definite bond that goes beyond BTS as a group. The joint stay at that hotel after Dubai seems really cute to me, like they couldn’t wait to spend some private time together. But ultimately, those moments don’t have to be romantic in origin.
Tae referencing Leslie Cheng (in a very public way) to me is him hinting at the possibility of him being queer. It’s so subtle though, that people who don’t know who that is, just take what they see as Tae doing a cute little dance. Tae thinks about things like this though. He references queer art (music, art) on a regular. At the premiere of Dream a few weeks ago he wore a shirt with the depiction of Oscar Wilde for instance, a queer writer from the 19th century. It’s always done in subtle ways, but those who know pick up on it.
Oh, they knew they were being recorded. I think this was a classic papwalk. Tae’s body language was sad to me, it wasn’t his usual proud, head helt high way of carrying himself. I saw someone point out at one point he tugged at Jennies hand to stop her from swinging their hands. No idea if that’s what he was really doing, but it didn’t look like a romantic stroll alongside the river to me. This was business.
In the end it doesn’t even really matter wether it was them or not, or if he was looking at the photographer or not. The message they clearly wanted to convey is that it was Tae and Jennie and they were holding hands. I don’t think a confirmation will come. With fandom being a hot mess, they would’ve already done that to settle things. If it’s real, they wouldn’t want fandom speculating and arguing about cossplayers and whatnot for too long. If it is real, they have already set the steps to out themselves to the world, so a confirmation would only cement things. If it’s real, they are now dating for more than a year and Tae wouldn’t want Army to lynch Jennie.
Thank you for your ask.
#i’m getting recommended?#know that my words are only my opinions#i only interpret things#someone else’s opinion might mean just as much#taekook
