i love when orv calls kim dokja a homo in a derogatory fashion. makes my day really
#there are so many jokes made about kim dokjas masculinity or lack thereof#and even more made about his sexuality and his close relationships with men vs inexperience with women#and its like 100% homophobic undercurrents where the butt of the joke is the idea kim dokja is weak and wimpy and thereby feminine#and also that he keeps getting put into gay as hell situations#but its like. literally only so many times you can call your main character gay to his face before he comes off. kinda gay#i could go on about how his wimpishness/lack of masculinity/gayness (all things orv sort of regards interchangeably)#often go hand in hand with his status as a reader which puts him outside the narrative (and the gender roles found within it)#but thats its own post#anyway. sing shong calls kim dokja a fag and i clap and cheer

Jackson is such an underrated character. I know Katniss has no emotional attachment to her so fans don't care for her, but she is (as far as I can remember) the ONLY adult in power who prioritizes Katniss and Peeta's safety and doesn't use, sacrifice, or endanger them if she can help it. She:
Tries to stop Katniss from going on the stupid and irresponsible military mission that's going to get them all killed
Has sympathy for Peeta after what the Capitol did to him and comes up with the real or not real game to help him recover
Refuses to leave Peeta behind when he asks them to
Refuses to leave Katniss when she suggests they split up because the lizard mutts are only after her
Sacrifices herself to fend off the mutts while the others escape
She may not be the most exciting or prevalent character, but she deserves love for being one of the only adults who actually treats Katniss and Peeta like teenagers.
#something I've noticed is that the adults in katniss's life who never really use/sacrifice her are women#hazelle jackson greasy sae to name a few#whereas all of the men do in some capacity#haymitch cinna boggs#and yet she forms strong bonds with the men and has cool/respectful relationships with the women#idk if that's her daddy issues at play or suzanne's own bias#but it's interesting#I'm gonna make a post about her differing dynamics with men vs women bc it's definitely a theme

Sometimes i remember a comics moment i randomly came across somewhere, where Sam Wilson mentiones a musical and Steve Rodgers says he doesn't like musicals, to whitch Sam goes "Guess that means you really are straight" and even tho i don't care about Cap America or the Avengers, the moment stuck in me for that quote by Sam. And like....Sci, any ideas if straight men actually don't like musicals or is that bullshit?
actually i think i know more gay men who hate musicals than i know straight men who hate musicals. i've had a drag queen stop me point blank when i was about to sing a barbra streisand song, and i know so many gays who pointedly hate abba. so based on my experience i think the inverse is true. most of the straight men i know are kind of impartial about musicals, but gay men? hate.
my theory is that a lot of gay men don't want to fall into stereotypes, maybe. but thaaaaat's just a theory! a gay theory.
#sci speaks#i'm trying to understand the gays. they are a mystery to me.#i've seen a lot more toxic masculinity coming from gay men than i have from straight men.#i think it makes sense. they have less women in their lives. so they reckon with a lot more masculinity. more dick measuring.#also gay men have some of THE most unhealthy romantic relationships i've ever seen in my life.#this isn't a blanket statement on everyone but just from what i've seen. it's such a strange pattern i've observed.#lesbians? healthy. straights? usually healthy. gay men? universally a tire fire that makes me say “if you hate each other so much ??”#“why are you together??????????”#i have never met a cis gay mlm couple in real life that was healthy. every single one of them made my eyes widen in horror.#i want them to be healthy. please treat each other better.#the number of bitchy bitchy fights i've seen between mlm couples in public that make me so terrified#but i know mlm relationships in general are usually less... affectionate than wlw relationships. even and especially friendships.#just an observation.#i hate to say that there is a definite difference between amab vs afab experiences when it comes to relationship dynamics but.#of course there is. there is. as much as i want to say gender and sex do not matter. it really does.#it makes a difference. it does.#which is kind of why i'm glad i was born in the body i was. when people say “trans means you feel you were born in the wrong body”#im like.. i don't think that's true. i don't think that's true for me.#i wouldn't be me if i wasn't born the way i was. and i want to be me. but i'm a boy. i'm a boy but in the body that i have.#my body is still a boy's body. because i live in here.#sorry this went off on a tangent.#but yeah i know my brain would be different if i was amab. and i don't want all those other issues.#i think the only reason i'm so peaceful and serene is because i'm afab. and afabulous.#i see cis guys and im like.. yeah i don't want what you got.#once again! lucky to be me! i'm lucky. im lucky i have a vargooba. thank fuck for that!#couldve been so much worse off. could've been born with a dick and would be fighting for my life right now.

Okay, so I was re-reading your Slider one-shot for like the twentieth time, and what really struck me (beyond the brilliance of your writing, and the way you’ve presented the disillusionment of growing up, expecting the world to be a certain way, only to realize that life doesn’t quite work out the way you think it will, when you’re seventeen), is the casual sexism just tossed ‘round by our main characters!! :o We have canonical evidence of both Ice and Mav being pretty sexist (what with “the plaque for the alternates is in the ladies’ room” and the downright stalker-ish behavior exhibited by Mav at the O-club…), but it still surprised me a lil’ when twenty-y/o Ice was just like: “The Soviet Union did the impossible and taught women to drive” —and I realized that ah, he truly was born in 1959, or something. There’s little scenes throughout your story where I find myself wondering, which one of them is better, in this sense: When Ice tells Mav that Sarah isn’t talking to him ‘cause of his combat kills, justifies it by saying: “You know how women are”, and Mav tells him all women aren’t the same… I thought that maybe, it was Mav; but then later, Ice shows a distinctive amount of empathy for Juno, sees and respects her for the skilled pilot that she is… and I thought that maybe, it’s Ice after all—he does seem to be more progressive and accepting than Mav, in general? It also made me wonder, that if either of them had been a woman, would they even have respected the other person enough to consider them to be a rival??—or would it have a been a mildly-amusing circus side show for them, to have a female pilot at TOPGUN?
Ty for the ask anon!! ice is more socially progressive than mav yes.
But—maybe this is my experience growing up in one of the bluest counties in Commiefornia and then going to one of the most leftist-coded colleges in one of the most leftist-coded cities in The World; uhh, even if a white man votes D all the time & has professional respect for women/minorities to their faces etc, get him in a room with a bunch of other white men, especially in a masculine and competitive environment like the gym or the navy, and uh. progressive or not, what you get is a lot of “The Soviet Union did the impossible & taught women to drive.”
And it was the 1980s. (As a reminder, in top gun’s 1986, less than 45% of Americans even approved of interracial marriage.) It sucks to say it, but if Ice was making fun of Cougar for quitting the navy cause of his psych issues such as they may be, and openly calling bullshit on Maverick’s MiG story in front of everyone, I am quite confident in saying he Would Not respect a female pilot to her face—if they were the same rank. At the same rank, it’s a competition. All weaknesses, even perceived biological ones, are to be exploited and called to attention. —But, once he’s advanced in rank, proven his own superiority, he’s more inclined to favor a meritocratic “sex doesn’t matter just fly good” attitude, ergo his relationship w/ “Juno” (she’s just a literary symbol to show that Ice may have respect for other minorities in the Navy “your career speaks for itself” but NOT FOR HIMSELF as a closeted man). This “who cares about gender/race just fly good” attitude is probably where 50s+ Maverick lands too, which is why no issues with Phoenix.
but jesus GOD maverick is a sexist in the original Top Gun. That’s why I wrote the prologue to WWGATTAI—a part of me definitely believes both he and Ice are definitively queer, but a part of me also wonders, are they just also conditioned to dismiss women as intellectual/societal equals because of their time in the 1980s male-dominated Navy? CAN they really only have a truly equal relationship with another man? I have no idea what my Ice’s sexual orientation is for exactly this reason. Yes, he’s functionally gay by the end of it, and that’s what I keep calling him—but sexuality is fluid & complicated. It’s definitely more-than possible he’s mostly straight and it’s just the circumstances of his wildly intense trauma-bond relationship with Maverick that led to their relationship as I wrote it. If you don’t LIKE/understand/respect women, and only feel at home/excited by committing acts of male-typified violence with the few men you respect, how does that bend your definition of the word straight? ...its still straight, but only straight-ish!
not to take it a step further, but WHY ELSE is canon maverick single in TGM? he canonically can’t make it work with women until he retires from the navy!!! he doesnt know how!!! His military environment is not conducive to normal long-term relationships with civilian women!!!
#and it’s well well documented that career military service does this to you!#Jesus look at cops. 40% etc.#yeah mil/LEO relationships with women are historically quite bad.#if you only respect men & then a man comes onto you—might be easier to sustain that relationship than with a woman you do not respect#I forget where i read it but this is the element of the homosocial vs the homosexual. i want to say Foucault but I think thats incorrect#EVE KOSOFSKY SEDGWICK. from her 'between men: English literature & male homosocial desire.' I think she's the preeminent homosocial scholar#if ur interested in 'further reading' not to sound like a geek#fellas is it gay to like women#after all…women kiss men…so if u kiss a woman ur kissing something that’s kissed another man…gay#ice (mid-makeout): well mavericks kissed women before so really this is the most heterosexual thing i could do#anyway#pete maverick mitchell#tom iceman kazansky#top gun#top gun maverick#icemav#asks#edts notes#mav is a social libertarian live & let live & keep the govt out of my bedroom (except for my marriage license uwu)#ice is a social moderate liberal. donates to actblue firmly believes diversity is the militarys greatest strength etc.#(i hope this isn’t too provocative to say but) look at ices outfit in tgm. libcoded. those gay little round glasses? solid lib.#the interracial marriage stat is from Gallup btw; 94% in 2021. weve come a long way. a lot has changed since 1986.#but our fav characters are FROM 1986 too so... we still cant forget that

Watch True Detective season 1 for slow burn old men yaoi.
#vibe-wise it's like. the opposite of Succ//ession#as in uuuh it's a cynical but sometimes so-ridiculous-its-funny kinda edgy detective show that paints a pretty grim picture#of the police force (as it should) and this is like mixed with the personal lives of the two main characters#whereas Succe//ssion is a satire drama about the rich where family is horror and the personal lives are sometimes mixed with the business#but also in the sense that you joke about Tom//Greg in Succe//ssion all the time but you don't actually expect anything resembling#toxic yaoi to happen. but it does. and you're like 'oh i should have seen this coming. but I didn't see it coming at all.'#and in this show you're like 'so...old men yaoi endgame right?' but the show keeps playing gay chicken and chickening out#and then it does happen S//AW style and you're like 'oh god finally' but the show itself seems to be like 'I wasn't expecting this'#sudden toxic yaoi that hits you like a punch to the nose even though the fist was curled the entire time vs#incredibly slow burn fucked up men yaoi that takes 50 years to show up but feels natural and organic and it's got style#anyway yeah watch True Dete//ctive if you want to watch two men who are extremely insufferable people who nobody should#have the displeasure of interacting with have the weirdest relationship I've ever seen#ok no it's not weird actually. it's just like. guys you meed to stop being repressed and just marry each other already.#please stop trying to fuck women and going all 'for some reason this does not fulfill me at all. for some reason I just cannot seem#to be happy with a woman.' like damn have you tried going out with a man instead? stop hurting the women in your life.#marry the only guy who can stand you instead.

He apparently has 2 kids with 2 different women and doesn't take care of either of them
Women, I will protect you-
#a damn shame… I’d expect nothing less from someone with those ideologies though#they shame women for having children and not ‘settling’ with these men who treat them like garbage#because for them it’s not REALLY about the women themselves it’s about a woman having the audacity to leave them#so they talk down on them for having kids and not being married while these same dudes would have like 20 other kids who they don’t even#know exist and will still think that they’re a good personsjjsj#the patriarchy has these negros and just men in general cooked#they wield it the same way white ppl use their whiteness to get ahead and punch down on black and brown ppl#and when it comes to black men…. I have sm to say but I don’t even feel like getting into it dkkssjm#they want all of the perks white men have and treat BW like diarrhea for free though#then when race is brought up with how they treat nb women vs black women they bash them#but whenever white women and nb ppl confront them about how they treat BM it’s crickets#or when other prominent bm actually challenge their misogynoir#they literally have nothing to say back other than ‘BM got attitude problems and they’re MEAN to us 🤕-‘#skksksk#so imagine having a kid with someone who thinks like this… I’m sure they aren’t black 😭#if this is all true about this loser than I think he has more important things to think about than getting on tik tok to bash women for not#being in a relationship and having kids 😭…. weirdo#tkf replies#spaceshipsandpurpledrank#dr umar is…. a lot of things lmfao but I still like those videos of him getting in the asses is other black men with Kevin samuels brainrot#at least the nigga is hilarious

As a transgender man
I have learned that there are MANY women who like assholes
Just like there are dudes who like stupid/crazy bitches
It takes all types.
And so of course: people mismatch
An actually good guy will end up with a bad girl over and over
Or vice versa
And slowly but surely his/her bad experiences
Will affect them negatively.
This happens to all of us in this world.
We acquire pain and trauma and bad habits
And we can fight and overcome them
And many of us only know struggle - for ourselves, our ideals, our lives.
And almost all we experienced is a giant "fuck you"
How long do we remain "good"? How long til we become the monsters we hate?
Of course.. I have been told by elders, by people who know better to stay true. Be good. Maybe you'll always be alone
at least you'll be good.
Loneliness kills. And if being "you" and being "good" doesn't get you anything but hurt or taken advantage of?
Withdraw.
Change.
Maybe stay the course.
Of course. For some reason even though people can relate to such sentiments.. if a man is saying it..
He must actually be a bad dude who is a douchebag. He must automatically be manipulative for pussy
I've had women tell me they think I was lying about being trans! To get laid!
As if that would ever work!!!
This is the type of world we live in.

One thing I really dislike about the question "Can (straight) men and (straight) women be friends?" is that it's usually approached from the perspective of romance. There is always the assumption that there will be a romantic relationship between these two people if they become too emotionally attached. However I find this to be a very hetero-centric view of relationships, and I would like to pose a question: can men and women be friends, not in terms of romance, but in terms of FRIENDSHIP?
I say this because recently I was hurt quite deeply by a male friend of mine. I won't get into the crux of the issues, because it's really not relevant. But I'd like to forgive him. I'd like to move on. However, he's not really providing any of the emotional support or reassurance that I need to move past it. His solution seems to be "Let's give it more time" when really, that's actually not fixing it. All that ends up happening is that I stew more and get even angrier. He hasn't done anything to actually make up for the problem. He told me that he couldn't reassure me that it won't happen again (which, well, THEN WHAT IS THE POINT OF HIM? WHAT IS THE POINT OF CONTINUING THEN?).
He basically threw our entire friendship out of balance, and I feel very exposed and vulnerable around him right now. I feel like I'm constantly in danger. Now, for full transparency, I have this feeling around a lot of people anyway because as an abuse victim, I often have a little voice in my head going "They're going to hurt you!" but since this has happened, I now have very real proof that he could hurt me that I can point to. And he hasn't actually done anything to reassure me or even meet me on the level that I am at. He doesn't seem to want to do any work to help get me through this.
And I think in his mind it's because I'm not his girlfriend. He would be making more of an effort if I was his girlfriend. And that's where I think this disconnect lies. I admittedly haven't been hurt this way by any of my female friends in my life, but I have had issues with some of them. And in periods where they actually wanted to fix the relationship, they actually talked to me and things changed between us, whether it was through changed behavior, an apology, or a gesture.
Each time, they've done a hell of a lot more than just "idk, man, let's take some time off". Because men and women just have different expectations on how to fix problems in friendships. I want to get to the root of what happened. He just wants to take some time off and doesn't want to reflect on his actions and do better. and THAT'S why (straight) men and (straight) women can't be friends.
write a When Harry Met Sally movie about THAT.
#when harry met sally#men vs women#straight men#straight women#relationships#dating#friendship#friendship advice#relationship advice#anyway i don't think we can be friends anymore#because it's been 3 months and i'm still incredibly hurt and angry#all i've gotten is an “i'm sorry” ONCE#feelings#therapy#emotional health#emotional intelligence#also tbc i actually really like when harry met sally#i just really hate that it asks the question “can men and women be friends”#responds “no”#and then doesn't dig into WHY#women#men#tyquira rambles
