"LOTS OF PIG ON EVERY SANDWICH"
That has long been one of my favorite barbecue restaurant slogans, courtesy of Fracchia's Pit Barbecue Cafe, which operated at 2461-2465 Jackson Avenue from the late 1940s up to about 1970. It came to mind when I saw the obituary for John Thomas Fracchia Jr., 84, in The Commercial Appeal of June 25. The bulk of Mr. Fracchia's work life was spent in the marine industry, but he got his start by managing the family restaurant.     For most of the 15 or so years I've been dabbling in this, I have almost always sent letters to the people I've wanted to talk with. Surely I sent one to Mr. Fracchia, but I have not been able to find a copy in my research mess. If I did not send him a letter, that was a huge blunder on my part. If I did and did not get a response, well, that has happened a lot. I might try to contact the family later on.    Anyway, here are some phone book ads for Fracchia's. The oldest one, circa 1948, lists the 2461 address (and features a classic clip-art pig). Fracchia's was among several barbecue restaurants in the city from that era that also had Italian on the menu. At the time it disappeared from the phone book, circa 1970, a Loeb’s was practically next door, at 2451.

PROJECT UPDATE: 954 JACKSON     A post from last October led with the news of a $25,000 Good Neighbor grant from the Center City Development Corp. to Roosevelt Bonds, owner of Jazzy J’s Sports Bar, to renovate the site into a 1,430-square-foot restaurant to be called Jackson Cafe. Upgrades were to include a new facade, outdoor seating and improved landscaping, at a total cost of $32,550. March was the target for opening.     The interest here is that the location has a long history as a barbecue restaurant, at least back to the mid-1950s when it was known as the Bar-B-Q Center. Later names included Jones Smoke House, Beasley's Barbecue, and Jango's, which was a favorite around our house in the early 2000s.       I drove by a couple of months ago and not much had changed, but today's visit saw lots of progress. The west side has a spiffy mural, and the patio area is moving along (enclosed, in a departure from the design rendering). It all looks neat and inviting, and worth a stop when it opens.

PUT IT BACK     Tops, the venerable local barbecue chain, has been on a tear lately with new menu offerings and freshened facades on their older locations. All good, but I'm not a fan of the new look at the No. 6 shop at 3353 Summer. I have long considered it to be the most handsome Tops restaurant -- not even close -- and maybe the best-looking in the city. It has the neon pig (which is making a well-deserved comeback), but the real asset is the out-front placement of the pit, with a wall of windows to see it all. Fake flames now hide the real thing. Ugh. Put it back.

SERVICE ON THE ROAD    I've had the opportunity this year to visit a couple of West Tennessee barbecue treasures -- Helen Turner's in Brownsville and Sam's in Humboldt. I try to stop at Helen's any time I'm passing exit 56 on I-40, but Sam's is a bit farther off the beaten path, but definitely worth the drive. I hadn't been there in years. The barbecue is excellent, and be sure to take a “pie” with you. Sam's is a Thursday-Saturday business only, so keep that in mind.

Some St. Jude photos - racing and others.
The Riverwalk was just stunning.
The stained glass window is in the Gunter… unfortunately I couldn’t visit that hotel because it’s undergoing a MASSIVE renovation after a pipe busted in April.
The Majestic and wreaths are part of the race course itself along with the 10K sign. I have a few more architectural designs as well.
Of course - the Alamo. We didn’t visit due to time constraints and a military ceremony (maybe change of command), but it was nice to see.
The state is doing a large scale project to bring it closer to the days of the seige there. It won’t be 100% accurate however - the territory of the entire fort would take part of the Riverwalk (it is manmade).
Would’ve loved to tour the fire station museum on the walk. Top right corner you see a “Fire Captain” waving.
The last is the Henry B. Gonzalez convention center. Above it is the Tower of The Americas.
The tower was built for the Hemisfair event back in 1968.
Mom went to it back then - it was a big thing apparently, and one can go up the tower in the elevator even today. There’s a restaurant at the top. It was lit up too for Christmas but I didn’t get a good photo day one and the last two had rain fog.
••••••
Now, for the post race thoughts.
I’m definitely looking forward to Memphis next year.
Already signed up for the 10K (the next day in fact as they did early registration)
I’d love to return to the half (13.1 miles over 6.4 in the 10K), but my current pacing is not fast enough to stay under the 4 hour, 20 min. limit.
This is regardless of me speeding up 5 minutes the second half of the 10K this year… my average 3/4 rate in the half is 19 mins/mile walking, even my best time (3:21.19 if interested).
I enjoyed the trip to SA more than the race (though I did have fun seeing a new course), and the Riverwalk at Christmas is something mom has been dreaming of doing for years.
But truthfully - racing for St. Jude is more impactful if you’re actually there in Memphis racing. It’s very hard to describe unless you’re there the crowds cheering you on - Hero or not.
I’m just saying it was also night and day on RnR how you were treated between the Saturday race we did and Sunday racers. RnR felt elitist based on your event… all I’m saying.
The St. Jude staff there at RnR however were wonderful, and were happy to see the handful of us there. The VIP meal we ate as a hero Sunday was also very good.
Still - I missed some traditions like getting dessert at The Peabody (and seeing the ducks and gingerbread village), going to Dyer’s in Colliersville and Corky’s barbecue.
Missed volunteering too, though I’ll likely still do that one day next year (probably pasta party if not shirt handout… they’ve modified bronze level to be eligible for a pasta party ticket again).
Says enough as I’m picturing Memphis last year more in my head than this year… so I’ll just say mom and I are happy to be back, and I’m hoping I brought Memphis a new runner.
Hope you enjoy photos of my one and will be only as they’ve cancelled their event in the future - RnR San Antonio 10K event.

Barbecue sauce (also abbreviated as BBQ sauce) is a sauce used as a marinade, basting, condiment, or topping for meat cooked in the barbecue cooking style, including pork or beef ribs and chicken. It is a ubiquitous condiment in the Southern United States and is used on many other foods as well.[1]
Ingredients vary, but most include vinegar or tomato paste (or a combination) as a base, as well as liquid smoke, onion powder, spices such as mustard and black pepper, and sweeteners such as sugar or molasses
Some place the origin of barbecue sauce at the formation of the first American colonies in the 17th century.[2] References to the sauce start occurring in both English and French literature over the next two hundred years. South Carolina mustard sauce, a type of barbecue sauce, can be traced to German settlers in the 18th century.[3]
Early homemade barbecue sauces were made with vinegar, salt, and pepper. Sugar, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce started to be used in the 1920s, but after World War II, the quantity of sugar and the number of ingredients increased dramatically.[4]
The Georgia Barbecue Sauce Company of Atlanta advertised an early commercially produced barbecue sauce in 1909.[5] Heinz was the first major company to sell bottled barbecue sauce in 1940. Soon afterward, General Foods introduced "Open Pit." Kraft Foods only entered the market in around 1960, but with heavy advertising, succeeded in becoming the market leader.[4] Kraft also started making cooking oils with bags of spice attached, supplying another market entrance of barbecue sauce.[6]
Different geographical regions have allegiances to their particular styles and variations of barbecue sauce.
East Carolina – Most American barbecue sauces can trace their roots to a sauce common in the eastern regions of North Carolina and South Carolina.[3] The simplest and the earliest, it was popularized by enslaved Africans who also advanced the development of American barbecue, and originally was made with vinegar, ground black pepper, and hot chili pepper flakes. It is used as a "mopping" sauce to baste the meat while it is cooking and as a dipping sauce when it is served. "Thin, spicy, and vinegar based," it penetrates the meat and cuts the fats in the mouth, with a noticeably tarter flavor than most other barbecue sauces.[7]
Western Carolina – In Lexington and the Piedmont areas of western North Carolina, the sauce is often called a dip. It is similar to the East Carolina Sauce with the addition of tomato paste, tomato sauce, or ketchup.[8]
South Carolina mustard sauce – Part of South Carolina is known for its yellow barbecue sauces made primarily of yellow mustard, vinegar, sugar and spices. This sauce is most common in a belt from Columbia to Charleston.
Memphis – Similar to the Western Carolina style, but using molasses as a sweetener and with additional spices. It is usually served as a dipping sauce, as Memphis-style barbecue is typically a dry rub.[9]
Kansas City – Thick, reddish-brown, tomato-based, and made with sugar, vinegar, and spices. It evolved from the Western Carolina and Memphis style sauces but is thicker and sweeter and does not penetrate the meat as much as it sits on the surface. Typical commercial barbecue sauce is based on the Kansas City style.[9]
Texas – In some of the older, more traditional restaurants, the sauces are heavily seasoned with cumin, chili peppers or chili powder, black pepper, and fresh onion, while using less tomato and sugar. They are medium thick and often resemble a thin tomato soup.[10] They penetrate the meat easily rather than sit on top. Bottled barbecue sauces from Texas are often different from those used in the same restaurants because they do not contain meat drippings.[11]
Alabama white sauce – North Alabama is known for its distinctive white sauce, a mayonnaise-based sauce that also includes apple cider vinegar, sugar, salt, and black pepper, which is used predominantly on chicken and pork.[12]

Cozy Corner Restaurant ~ 735 N. Parkway Memphis, TN
Out of all the Memphis barbecue joints–and there are a lot of them–Cozy Corner stands out for a few reasons, the biggest one being Desiree Robinson. She is the matriarch of Cozy Corner and was the first Black woman to be inducted into the American Royal Barbecue Hall of Fame in 2020. Cozy Corner is still at the location where it opened on North Parkway in 1977, and thanks to Robinson and her family, it’s still just as delicious. You’ll find all the classics like smoked pork, bologna sandwiches, and of course ribs. There are a few stand-outs too, like the cornish hen that you won’t find anywhere else in Memphis.

Texas Style BBQ
That brings us to the most recent style of Texas Style BBQ, which is centered in cities like Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio. Texas Style BBQ is the stuff of legends. STUFF'S HAPPENING, BUT SOME HOUSEKEEPING FIRST
Tumblr media
The GPC staff has grown by one with the addition of Mr. Pig as general manager, in charge of the day-to-day activity around the home office. We weren't looking to expand, but he showed up earlier this year and made a persuasive case for his hiring. His early resume involves a stint as part of a pretty rowdy bunch of hand puppets for a few years, and then goes blank until recently.
Tumblr media
His managerial skills are questionable, so we'll take it low and slow. On to the news . . .
Tumblr media
MEMPHIS TOAST, 954 JACKSON: GHOST PIT IS REALLY BACK
We've been following the progress of this place for the past few posts. It's finally open, and it's a pretty neat little joint. The history of this long-time barbecue shop has been set out here several times. Now it's a breakfast/brunch place (open 6 am-2 pm, maybe every day, call 417-7817 to be sure), but also with some barbecue vibes. The transformation of the old place is impressive, as is the food.

Tumblr media
We've been there three times since it opened last month, and enjoyed all of them. Perhaps the neatest part, from our perspective, is the replication of the old pit.
Tumblr media
According to the Toast's exec chef, Carlos Scurlock, the mortar in the original pit was too deteriorated to allow any cooking. No problems with the new one, and plans are to use it -- no pork, but likely for wings and such. It's a great addition to the Smokey City neighborhood, and is becoming the breakfast place of choice as the future of the Barksdale seems bleak after a kitchen fire.

GET YOUR TEA TIME: 709 E. PARKWAY SOUTH Out with Subway, in with Boba Boba Life, at this former Loeb's barbecue restaurant that dates from the 1960s. It's close to opening. Not likely a place we'll visit, but it's good to see an old ghost pit back in business after the Subway closure. Interesting.
Tumblr media
On the negative side, the old Cave's Soul Food and More on Jackson remains empty after its former tenant, a pasta restaurant, moved to Downtown.
Tumblr media
ODDS AND ENDS Ebay just came through with this Little Pigs of America mask from the early/mid 1960s. First one I've seen, and I'm tickled to have it. Here's the listing for it from the LPOA Commissary Supply Catalog.
Tumblr media
My daughter finds all kinds of Memphis barbecue stuff on the internet, and recently sent me this Loeb's piece that looks to be part of a newspaper ad. Never seen it. Don't know who the people are, but I'd guess their last name is Loeb.
Tumblr media
It mentions pretty much all of Loeb's commercial ventures from the 1960s (including chicken) that you could find all on one corner -- laundromat, dry cleaning, market, barbecue restaurant.
Tumblr media
Finally, from a friend's backyard, the remnants of a barbecue pit that was a fairly common feature of Midtown houses from the 1920s and 1930s. I have one, but it's covered in some type of nasty vine.

Cleaner City, Greener Future: Memphis Used Cooking Oil Pickup
Tumblr media
In the vibrant city of Memphis, where the blues echo through the streets and the barbecue smoke wafts through the air, a new rhythm of sustainability is gaining momentum. "Green Practices:used cooking oil collection Memphis TN Recycling Made Easy in Memphis" is not just a slogan; it's a call to action for residents to join the movement towards a cleaner, greener future.
Memphis has long been known for its rich cultural heritage and mouthwatering cuisine. However, with great flavors often come large amounts of used cooking oil. Recognizing the environmental impact of improper disposal, the city has embraced a proactive approach to managing this waste through an easy and accessible used oil recycling program.
This initiative aims to transform the way residents think about their cooking practices, encouraging them to become stewards of the environment. The program's success lies in its simplicity and convenience. Instead of discarding used cooking oil down the drain or into the trash, residents can now effortlessly contribute to a more sustainable city by participating in the used oil recycling program.
One of the key features that make this program so accessible is its network of collection points strategically placed throughout Memphis. These collection points, often located near popular grocery stores or community centers, provide a convenient drop-off location for residents to dispose of their used cooking oil without hassle. The ease of access is crucial in encouraging widespread participation and ensuring that the recycling process becomes a natural part of residents' routines.
The collected used cooking oil undergoes a sophisticated recycling process that transforms it into valuable resources. Rather than being an environmental burden, the once-discarded oil becomes a raw material for biodiesel production. This closed-loop approach not only minimizes waste but also contributes to the city's efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and dependence on traditional fossil fuels.
Educational initiatives play a significant role in the success of the program. The city organizes workshops, seminars, and outreach campaigns to raise awareness about the environmental impact of used cooking oil and the benefits of recycling. By fostering a sense of responsibility among residents, Memphis is cultivating a community of environmentally conscious individuals who understand the importance of their role in preserving the city's natural beauty.
Moreover, local businesses are encouraged to participate in the program, further amplifying its impact. Restaurants, catering services, and food establishments are provided with resources and support to implement sustainable practices in their kitchens. This collaborative effort ensures that the entire community is involved in the journey towards a greener Memphis.
As "Green Practices: Used Oil Recycling Made Easy in Memphis" gains traction, the city is setting an example for others to follow. The success of this initiative is not just measured in the amount of used oil collected but in the collective change in mindset towards sustainability. Memphis is proving that a city's rich cultural history can coexist harmoniously with modern environmental practices, creating a legacy that future generations can be proud of. In Memphis, the blues may play on, but the city is singing a new tune—one of sustainability, responsibility, and a commitment to a brighter, greener future.
