Debbie Walsh, diretora do Center for American Women and Politics (Cawp), instituição-referência no mapeamento da participação política feminina nos EUA, diz: “Foi escolha pensada. Comemorado em agosto, o centenário reverberou nas mídias sociais, encampado por articulações como Black Lives Matter, #Me Too, Say Her Name e We All Vote. Ícones femininos saíram a campo. Hillary teve a maioria do eleitorado feminino, 54%. We are here to stay”.

Best TV Series For Law Enthusiasts
Looking for a new law series to binge that isn’t created by Dick Wolf? Have you already binged your way through Law & Order, SVU, and Criminal Intent? Good news, there are countless shows out there that are focused around legal roles. Maybe you’re a law student looking for something to watch while you study for the bar or maybe you’re a lawyer looking for a new show to mutter “That’s not how it’s done!” while you watch.
Whether you’re a fan or a professional, here are ten of the best shows for law enthusiasts that you can binge tonight.
  Better Call Saul (2015 – )
5 Seasons, 51 Episodes on Amazon Prime [IMDb 8.7/10] Cast: Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Rhea Seehorn, Patrick Fabian, Michael Mando
If you loved Breaking Bad, then you’ll love this spin-off series. Six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became the attorney of Walter White, he was a small-time attorney known as Jimmy McGill. He was a champion of low-income clients and an underdog among his peers. The series follows Jimmy as he works with the private eye Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Rake (2010 – 2018)
5 Seasons, 45 Episodes on Amazon Prime [IMDb 8.6/10] Cast: Richard Roxburgh, Matt Day, Kate Box, Caroline Brazier
Set in Australia, this series revolves around the Sydney criminal-defense barrister Cleaver Greene (Richard Roxburgh). He works on cases that most barristers would never touch because his clients are typically guilty of the heinous crimes they are being tried for. The character is largely based on a real-life barrister and author, Charles Waterstreet. While the series focuses heavily on the legal cases he’s handling, it also focuses on his own self-destructive personality which includes addiction and a myriad of problems with the women in his life.
Suits (2011 – 2019)
9 Seasons, 134 Episodes on Hulu [IMDb 8.5/10] Cast: Gabriel Macht, Rick Hoffman, Sarah Rafferty, Patrick J. Adams, Meghan Markle
Set at fictional New York City law firm the series follows Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams), a talented college dropout, as he begins work as a law associate for Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) despite never attending law school. While the show focuses on the cases that Harvey and Mike work on together, the series became best known for the interpersonal relationships between the characters. The series finale was hailed as one of the most satisfying series finales in television history. Which is pretty steep praise.
Billions (2016 – )
5 Seasons, 51 Episodes on Showtime [IMDb 8.4/10] Cast: Paul Giamatti, Damian Lewis, Maggie Siff, Malin Åkerman
A “ripped from the headlines” series, Billions was inspired by the real-life investigations undertaken by Preet Bharara, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 2009 to 2017. The series focuses on hedge fund manager Bobby Axelrod (Damian Lewis) as he accumulates wealth and power in the financial world. His aggressive and illegal tactics lead the United States Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) to attempt to prosecute him. The series has a large ensemble cast, helping to interweave dynamic stories about law enforcement and private enterprise.
The Good Wife (2009 – 2016)
7 Seasons, 158 Episodes on Hulu [IMDb 8.3/10] Cast: Julianna Margulies, Matt Czuchry, Christine Baranski, Archie Panjabi
Alicia Florrick (Julianna Marguiles) has been a good wife to her husband (Chris Noth). When political corruption and a sex scandal lands her husband in jail, she returns to her career as a defense attorney, moving past the persona of a humiliated wife. The series has received critical acclaim for its storylines and was considered one of the best drama series on TV.
  Silk (2011 – 2014)
3 Seasons, 18 Episodes on Amazon Prime and Hulu [IMDb 8/10] Cast: Maxine Peake, Rupert Penry-Jones, Neil Stuke, Theo Barklem-Biggs
The series is set around a group of barristers from a set of criminal law chambers in London. The story mostly follows the rivalry between Martha Costello (Maxine Peake) and Clive Reader (Rupert Penry-Jones). While it was mostly a courtroom drama, the creator wanted to also focus on the human drama behind the scenes, inspired by his own experiences as a former barrister.
American Crime Story (2016 – )
2 Seasons, 19 Episodes on Netflix [IMDb 8/10] Cast: Varies
Created by American Horror Story’s Ryan Murphy, the anthology series has so far covered two groundbreaking cases in American legal history. The first season covered the murder trial of O.J. Simpson, while the second covered the assassination of Gianni Versace. It’s a spectacular series filled with familiar faces. The upcoming season is set to cover the impeachment of President Bill Clinton.
The Practice (1997– 2004)
8 Seasons, 205 Episodes on Amazon Prime [IMDb 7.7/10] Cast: Steve Harris, Camryn Manheim, Michael Badalucco, Dylan McDermott
Bobby Donnell (Dylan McDermott) is a passionate lawyer and head of a struggling Boston law firm, whose instincts tell him that the most important cases aren’t about the money. The series revolves around Bobby, his receptionist Rebecca Washington (Lisa Gay Hamilton), and the junior attorneys with the law firm. This series led to the equally popular spin-off Boston Legal.
Bull (2016 – )
4 Seasons, 87 Episodes on Hulu [IMDb 7/10] Cast: Michael Weatherly, Freddy Rodriguez, Geneva Carr
The series follows the employees at Trial Analysis Corporation, a jury consulting firm headed by Dr. Jason Bull (Michael Weatherly), who is a psychologist and trial science expert. Bull uses his skills and those of his team not only to select the right jurors for his clients, but also to help his clients' lawyers decide which type of argument will win over jurors best. The series is inspired by television personality Dr. Phil who worked for a trial consulting firm.
Ally McBeal (1997 – 2002)
5 Seasons, 112 Episodes on Amazon Prime [IMDb 6.8/10] Cast: Calista Flockhart, Greg Germann, Jane Krakowski, Vonda Shepard
The series begins with Ally McBeal (Calista Flockhart) joining the firm co-owned by her law school classmate Richard Fish (Greg Germann) after leaving her previous job due to sexual harassment. Although the series is largely focused on the weekly court cases, the main plot of the first three seasons is centered around Ally working alongside her ex-boyfriend Billy Thomas (Gil Bellows) and his wife, and fellow lawyer, Georgia (Courtney Thorne-Smith). The series started off strong, but the last season, unfortunately, earned it a cancellation from Fox.
If this list didn't help you find something to binge tonight,  at least Annalise Keating and her students are there for us. Did you see that series finale?

Greener Plates: Restructuring How We Think About Meat Consumption to Protect the Planet
By: Meghan Rhoades
Tumblr media
Illustrations by Meghan Rhoades
The myriad of environmental pressures degrading the environment can often seem abstract and overwhelming, as if nothing one could do could ever make enough of an impact to truly mitigate the situation. Often, we speak about changing our lifestyles in a way that revolves around ultimatums—living plastic-free or giving up air travel. Or, going vegetarian or vegan, giving up all meat or all animal products. Many express the sentiment that they could never sustain such a drastic lifestyle change. But I feel that if we shift from thinking about managing the impact of meat on the environment as an all or nothing move to stop eating meat to a choice to consciously reduce intake, the decision will feel less intimidating. This shift in mentality has begun to be observable in food culture, which plays an important role in demonstrating how delicious and appealing meals without meat can be.
The discussion surrounding why we should eat less meat has had extensive coverage, raising awareness of some of the main arguments for doing so. They revolve around the benefits to animals (due to the impact of animal agriculture on the well-being of animals), humans (due to the health benefits—experts agree that a balanced diet moderates meat with lots of vegetables, fruit, and whole grains), and the planet (due the environmental degradation on the part of meat production). As we reflect on how to reduce our impact on the environment, eating less meat is an important action that can be taken. Meat production uses valuable land and water to raise animals as well as grow feed. However, the most dire impact of the meat industry is its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, which red meat production is especially notorious for. Drawing from a recent study, TIME magazine pointed out that if everyone stopped eating red meat we could lower food industry related greenhouse gas emissions by 25%. However shocking the statistic, this proposition is ultimately not feasible for many reasons—notably, the importance of considering regional context and cultural traditions surrounding meat consumption. In many places around the world, raising livestock forms the backbone of local economies and is often the best stable supply of available protein. Often the cultural role of meat, as a symbol of status or as the basis of traditional dishes, creates another angle of resistance to the movement for reduced meat consumption. However, there are just as many regions where vegetarian diets are commonplace in the regional tradition. There are varied and complex relationships with meat consumption, but the role of the meat production industry in environmental degradation is undeniable.
Taking into account the variety of cultural attitudes toward meat consumption, the question of how to create a sustainable change in consumption patterns that will reduce the impact on the environment becomes central. The approach of making eating less meat less imposing has been galvanized by the food industry. Influenced by observing the issue from the lens of Los Angeles, where health food trends are one key element of a vibrant food culture, there has been a rise of menus that move away from meat based dishes in recent years. Fast-casual establishments such as Veggie Grill and Native Foods are introducing diners to creative, delicious vegetable dishes. The more high end vegan restaurant Crossroads Kitchen is one restaurant that has demonstrated how vegan dining has begun to enter the commonplace, steering away from the image of a shack selling only raw kale. Food journalists have described other establishments where vegetables are given a prominent role in the menu as “vegetable forward,” creating a space in the vernacular for a model that is not entirely meat-free, but makes an effort to craft a wide variety of vegetable dishes. This trend in the restaurant world has played a valuable role in breaking down the bias against reducing meat, but an awareness of the motivations behind it is important to increase the chances that consumers will be motivated to put in work to maintain such a change in their own lives.
There are many strategies to make a personal effort to eat less meat more approachable. One approach is to give up a certain meat (such as red) all the time, replacing it with poultry or fish. Another is to pick a few days of the week to eat meat. For instance, some people choose to eat meat only on the weekends, or when eating out. Another important component of reducing meat consumption is the use of alternative sources of protein, such as beans, nuts, and seeds along with soy-based proteins such as tofu and seitan. Especially in western cooking tradition, vegetables have been banished from being the main event to being a side dish, sowing some apprehension among some as to how to prepare them in interesting ways. Luckily, we live in the age of the internet, which is rife with recipes and techniques for creative vegetable preparation—or, if you retain an old soul connection, there are many innovative cookbooks focusing on how to incorporate a wider range of vegetables in an interesting way. If you have enjoyed a vegetable-focused dish at a restaurant and wished you could make it yourself, you might be surprised to find you are able to replicate it with a little googling and testing. Working to reduce rather than eliminate meat consumption seems like a more realistic approach to achieve a more widespread change in the environmental impact of meat consumption. And in gradually eating less meat, one may find giving up meat entirely becomes less intimidating.
Reducing meat consumption is a key method of alleviating environmental pressures, but for many people a lack of access to fresh produce and a wide range of ingredients makes eating well a challenge, let alone restructuring eating habits. Those with the resources to do so may make a change in their own context but should remain aware of the wide, often disparate range of experiences with food access. Thinking critically about how food systems produce our food and how the circumstances of our life have impacted our interactions with them can reveal the many issues that intersect with the environmental impact of meat consumption. Perhaps an effort to restructure our food systems to be centered more locally, empowering communities to control their access to healthy food, centered around the underlying necessity to move away from the model of animal agriculture to reduce the environmental impact, is a larger goal that will have to occur at the level of the system. But an individual reflecting consciously on their place in the system and making the effort to eat less meat can contribute to this change.

IHEARIC VIDEOS: A Cover of Philip Glass, A Wind Trio, and Some Funk https://ift.tt/2GvOYAF
Thanks to Justin K Comer for providing information on who the musicians are. The week we present three shorter videos from the IHearIC YouTube channel. The first is a live of "Knee Play 5", a song from Philip Glass's opera, "Einstein on the Beach". It features Jared Fowler on keyboard and Megan Karls on violin. Unfortunately, we don't know who the speaker was. "In 2011 Jared Fowler completed his master’s degree in String Performance under the direction of Volkan Orhon. From 2009-2011 he held the position of Teacher’s Assistant for the Jazz Studies program, and maintained an active and varied performance schedule inside and outside of the university. Jared collaborated widely in many genres performing in live-sound installations, Brazilian jazz trios, and onstage with the Des Moines, Dubuque and Waterloo Symphonies. "In 2009, Jared initiated the IHearIC concert series, a fast-paced show that presents performances by UI music students and local musicians. In 2011, the project was awarded an Iowa Arts grant funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. "Currently based in Los Angeles, Jared works as the Instructional Assistant of Music at the LA Harbor College. You can learn more at: www.jaredfowler.com/" - from his page on the University of Iowa Double Bass Studio website Jared Fowler on SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/jaredfowler "Megan Karls delights in her fifth season with the Cascade Quartet and as Principal Second Violin of the Great Falls Symphony. She also enjoys performing across the state of Montana with the String Orchestra of the Rockies, Festival Amadeus, Yellowstone Chamber Players, Billings Symphony, and occasionally as concertmaster with the Bozeman Symphony and Intermountain Opera. Before moving to Montana, Megan previously held positions across the US and abroad including the Wichita, KS, Green Bay, WI, Des Moines, IA and Assisi, Italy symphony orchestras. "Megan is a founding member of the contemporary music ensemble, the Enid Trio. The Enids have commissioned over 25 new works for their unique instrumentation (violin, viola and bassoon) and have been guest artists and clinicians at Oberlin Conservatory, Lawrence University, Northern Illinois University, Wichita State University, Roundtop, Society for Electroacoustic Music in the US, and various conferences across America. "A passionate educator, Megan spends her summers on the faculty at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp (MI), Superior String Alliance camp (MI), and Camp Festival Amadeus (MT). She holds degrees with honors from Lawrence University and the University of Iowa in both political science and music." - from her page on the Cascade Quartet website The Enid Trio on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Enidtrio/ The wind trio featured Marjorie Shearer on clarinet, Meghan Woodard on oboe, Stephanie Willow Patterson on bassoon. "Marjorie began playing the clarinet at the age of 11. Growing up in Central Florida, she studied with the principal clarinetist of the Orlando Philharmonic, who remains the most influential person in shaping her musical career. "Marjorie earned a Bachelors degree in Music Performance from University of Florida, a Masters degree in Music Performance from Northern Illinois University, and is currently pursuing her education further at the University of Iowa where she is a Doctoral candidate and the graduate teaching assistant. She also works at Oaknoll as a recreation aide." - from her page on the West Music website "Oboist and English horn player, Meghan Woodard is an active freelance performer and teacher in the greater Philadelphia area. She currently teaches oboe students at Temple University, Haverford College, and Bryn Mawr College. In November 2015 Meghan was a featured soloist with the Temple University Wind Symphony, performing the Concerto for Oboe and Wind Band by Lukas Foss (arr. Rhoads)—a piece that she also edited for a new edition with PeerMusic Classical. Meghan was also a founding member and manager of the Philadelphia-based woodwind quintet, Federal Winds, whom she performed several unique concerts with in 2016 as part of the 'Project Stream Grant' awarded by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. "In the orchestral world, Meghan has recently performed with Symphony in C, the Wilmington Ballet Orchestra, and the Prometheus Chamber Orchestra. Previously, Meghan was a member of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra in Cedar Falls, Iowa from 2012 to 2013; before that she performed as Co-Principal Oboe with the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra in Norwalk, Connecticut from 2009 to 2010. She has subbed with orchestras in Pennsylvania, Iowa, Connecticut, and New York since 2007." - from her page on the Fine Art Music Company website "California native Dr. Stephanie Willow Patterson is a bassoonist with a passion for collaboration, outreach, and contemporary music. She is the Assistant Professor of Bassoon at the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University and the Principal Bassoonist of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Columbus, GA. As a member of the Enid Trio, she performs across the country, reaching out to young musicians to share their love of innovative music and education. She has previously taught at Wichita State University. "Stephanie performs and teaches at the Festival Internacional de Música Colonial Brasileira e Música Antiga in Juiz de Fora, Brazil, and is a founding member of the Woods, Winds, and Willows Chamber Orchestra. She has been invited to perform at the Fairbanks New Music Festival, the Sonorities Festival in Belfast, Ireland, the IHearIC music series, and the Meg Quigley Vivaldi Bassoon Symposium. She has been a member of the Wichita Symphony and Wichita Grand Opera, the Fairbanks Symphony and Arctic Chamber Orchestra, and has performed with the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra, Waterloo/Cedar Falls Symphony, Orchestra Iowa, and the Quad-Cities Symphony. She has also performed with the Iowa City Jazz Vespers group and the Wichita-based free-jazz Bodo ensemble. "Her primary bassoon gurus have been Professors George Sakakeeny, Nicolasa Kuster, Scott Oakes and Benjamin Coelho though she has also dabbled in improvisation under the direction of jazz bassoonist Paul Hansen, and studied in St. Petersburg, Russia with Igor Gerasimov. She holds degrees in music and Russian language from the Oberlin Conservatory and College, Wichita State University, and a Doctorate in Musical Arts from the University of Iowa... "Crossing genres with performances in costume, she has performed Michael Daugherty’s Dead Elvis at the Wichita Knob Festival at the FischHaus art gallery, and In Freundschaft by Stockhausen for bassoon-playing teddy bear. She has performed in Carnegie Hall, on the busy streets of Moscow, on the pedestrian malls of Madrid, in the gilded Kappella hall in St. Petersburg, inside a medieval church in Prague, for low-income afterschool programs in Alaska, with Pierre Boulez at the Kunstmuseum Luzern, atop a gallows at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, in a room with speakers on all sides and below the audience, and in the mountains of North Carolina." - from her home page Home page: https://stephaniewillowpatterson.com/ Stephanie Willow Patterson on SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/stephanie-patterson-7 The Enid Trio on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Enidtrio/ "reldnips and Mr. Ting met as music students at the University of Iowa. They both had a deep passion for music, but the traditional musical curriculum had been leaving them with a stiff neck like a bad night of sleep. Their first venture was beginning a funky group called The BBQ Mansion Brass Band. The group was successful but only lasted for one semester. Meanwhile, both had been working on music on their own. reldnips was writing raps and making beats. Mr. Ting was making synth fueled dance tracks. After one summer break the two knew that they had to collaborate and form a single effort. The goal of the group is to create music that's funky and danceable, driven by an inescapable groove. They bring a unique sound to a contemporary style with the use of trombone and sousaphone. By incorporating effects, the duo turns these traditional instruments into tools for funking and grooving into the future of contemporary music styles. If it's not fun, what's the point? Let reldnips and Mr. Ting put the funk back in the joint." - from their ReverbNation page Their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pg/reldnipsandmrting Their ReverbNation page: https://www.reverbnation.com/reldnipsandmrting More IMSC posts featuring classical music: http://iowamusicshowcase.blogspot.com/search/label/classical%20music More IMSC posts featuring funk: http://iowamusicshowcase.blogspot.com/search/label/funk More IMSC posts featuring IHearIC: http://iowamusicshowcase.blogspot.com/search/label/IHearIC PREVIOUSLY ON IOWA MUSIC SHOWCASE: IHEARIC PODCAST - Episode 1 (10/22/2017) http://iowamusicshowcase.blogspot.com/2018/04/ihearic-podcast-episode-1-10222017.html JAZZMAN JOE VIDEOS - Singers Summit with The Community Jazz Center Big Band at Java Joe's in Des Moines on Mar 18, 2018 http://iowamusicshowcase.blogspot.com/2018/03/jazzman-joe-videos-singers-summit-with.html IHEARIC PODCAST - Episode 16: March Concert Preview (03/25/2018) http://iowamusicshowcase.blogspot.com/2018/03/ihearic-podcast-episode-16-march.html YOUR OWN PRIVATE IOWA - Episode 26: AIBU http://iowamusicshowcase.blogspot.com/2018/03/ihearic-videos-lwa-live-and-in-pitch.html IHEARIC VIDEOS - Lwa Live and in Pitch Darkness at The Englehart Theater in Iowa City on Oct 25, 2010 http://iowamusicshowcase.blogspot.com/2018/03/ihearic-videos-lwa-live-and-in-pitch.html One week ago... Thanks to Justin K Comer for providing information on who the musicians are. The week we present three shorter videos from the IHearIC YouTube channel, two classical and one funk.
