one reason why i love megan and larry from numb3rs is that it's completely unexpected that they reciprocate feelings for each other. you would expect someone like megan, if she were to end up with a nerd, to end up with someone like charlie. she doesn't. she likes larry.
another reason is how much they're similar even though they're different. they're both trying to understand the world around them better. megan does it by understanding the human mind. she learns behavior and profiling. larry does it by understanding the universe, the cosmos, the world around him.
the third reason is how much respect they have for each other. i chalk it up to both of them being open-minded but megan listens to larry, tries to understand him, asks for clarity when she needs it so she full understands what he says and how, to him, it's connected to the conversation they were having. larry never discounts her experience or her understanding of the human mind (like charlie's been known to do). he's a scientist but he becomes that way because he's an observer. he watches the world and knows there's nuance and depth in ways he may not understand and trusts megan's understanding.
the fourth reason is that even though they don't really end up together (that we see) but they love each other. they realize they need to understand more about themselves and their lives. the world doesn't end, their bond doesn't fizzle. and it's okay.
i'm doing a mini rewatch and i love them so much.

Next up is Charlie Eppes!
I love Charlie so much I honestly feel like this fits him a lot!
This genius is gay.
Both him and Amita are Queer but everyone kept on assuming that they were interested in each other so they pretend to date after the assumptions get too annoying. This way they can hang out as best friends and also have time to figure out their lives and find a moment where they feel comfortable enough to come out without anyone questioning them.
The first person Charlie came out to was Margaret. She always understood him the most and one day when he was around fifteen he confided in her that he wasn’t into girls the way Don was. She was very accepting of him and tried to help him despite not being very knowledgeable on it due to the era she grew up in and her being straight.
He didn’t reveal it to anyone else for a few years because he wasn’t comfortable enough and didn’t want the added pressure of homophobia when he already got a lot of aggression and mockery from people for being a young math genius.
After he came out to everyone he still knew that homophobia was a problem in the world but with the support of his family and new friends he was able to feel safer to come out.
When he was younger he saw the way Don was with girls and felt like that was the way he needed to be. He wanted to be like his big brother because when he was a kid he was a little insecure and thought that if he was more like Don then his brother would want to spend time with him. As he got older he started to understand himself more and knew he could be himself and still have love and support from Don.
Charlie didn’t have a lot of dating options when he was younger due to being a lot younger than his classmates but he did sometimes have small innocent crushes on male students or teachers that only his mum knew about. His mum reassured him that having crushes on them was completely normal and that eventually he’d find someone his own age once he got a little older and started finding peers closer to his age.
Despite initially getting off on the wrong foot Charlie was still quite attracted to Ian Edgerton when he met him. There were times when their debating sounded like flirting and he made a good friend once they both put aside their small difference of opinion. Charlie tried to keep his attraction a secret and often felt slightly shy by Ian’s blatant flirting in private but he was sure that Terry could sense that he liked him but she never brought it up probably because she didn’t feel it was her place. Although he was attracted to him his small feelings eventually became platonic.
He was very attracted to Colby when he first met him and although Charlie was a little oblivious to it, Colby seemed interested as well but obviously kept quiet and tried not to show it due to his boss being Charlie’s big brother. The two of them could joke with each other and talk about things when either needed someone to listen. It wasn’t long until Charlie found himself falling for him. He didn’t mention it because he wasn’t sure if Colby actually was interested and could be straight anyway. Both their feelings were revealed one evening when Colby came to visit Charlie to see if he had any news on a murder case. He could see that Charlie was getting stressed and Charlie was struggling so Colby convinced him to take a break and got him a drink. They both sat in the garage and had a couple of drinks together to relax since they’d all been working overtime on this case they could spare a few minutes to calm down. While talking things through they stopped for a moment and then Colby leaned in a kissed Charlie. Charlie was surprised by this and shocked enough to freeze because he wasn’t expecting it and all his feelings for Colby suddenly come rushing to front of his mind. Colby initially took this as rejection and tried to apologise but Charlie kissed him again. After this the two began dating in secret because both weren’t ready to come out yet. Charlie found out that Colby is pansexual. Things became tense after Colby was revealed as a double agent but after everything was explained and Charlie started to feel he could trust Colby again they were able to start again and get back together.
Alan and Don were the people he was most nervous to come out to. He was fairly certain they wouldn’t react in a negative way but Charlie knew that Alan was excited for grandchildren and often asked about him getting a girlfriend. He didn’t want to disappoint his dad. Luckily for Charlie, Alan though a little surprised and confused reassured Charlie that even if he doesn’t understand it and might get things wrong from time to time he loves him very much no matter who he loves. Don wasn’t overly surprised but a little upset with himself that he hadn’t made Charlie feel safe enough when they were younger to tell him. After Charlie came out to them the elder Eppes men became very protective of their youngest often snapping at any bigot they came across.
After Margaret, Larry and Amita were the next people who he came out to and then it was Colby and then Alan and Don. He came out to Megan and David later on and eventually also told Terry (when she would visit) and Ian. He also confided in Oswald about being gay when Oswald confided in him about being queer too. Charlie wanted to help Oswald feel comfortable the way his friends and family did too not only in the maths world but in being lgbt.

Can you please make Kenan x reader where they're doing the Hear Me Out Cake trend
HEAR ME OUT - KENAN YILDIZ
Doing the hear me out cake trend
Kenan Yildiz x fem! reader
︵‿୨♡୧‿︵‿︵‿୨♡୧‿︵‿︵‿୨♡୧‿︵‿
The camera was set up, phone propped against a candle on the dining table, and Kenan was already cracking up before we even started.
“This is gonna be so stupid,” he said, shaking his head as he shuffled through his stack of photo picks.
“Exactly why it’s going to be hilarious,” I shot back, grinning. I adjusted the cake in the center of the table so it was perfectly in view of the camera. “Ready?”
Kenan gave me a mock-serious look. “Born ready.”
I hit record and took a seat next to him. “Alright, guys,” I began, addressing the imaginary audience, “we’re doing the ‘Hear Me Out’ cake trend, where we stick photos of people—or things—we think are attractive into this cake.” I motioned dramatically to the pristine, frosting-covered cake before us.
Kenan leaned toward the camera. “Don’t judge us... too harshly.”
I started off tame, holding up my first pick: Chris Evans as Captain America.
“Hear me out,” I said, sticking his photo into the cake.
Kenan rolled his eyes. “Typical. Safe. Boring.” He grabbed his first pick and revealed it to the camera: Megan Fox in Transformers.
“Predictable,” I teased, shoving his shoulder lightly.
“She’s literally perfect,” he shot back, planting her photo firmly in the frosting.
The first few rounds were normal enough. I added Zendaya, Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, and Blake Lively.
Kenan countered with Rihanna, Tom Hardy, and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.
“Respectable choices,” I said, nodding.
“Same to you,” he replied, grinning.
And then things started to spiral.
I held up Shrek in a tuxedo.
Kenan’s jaw dropped, and he looked at me like I’d just betrayed him. “Are you serious right now?”
I shrugged innocently. “Hear me out—he cleans up nice.”
He burst out laughing, leaning back in his chair. “Okay, okay. You’ve officially lost it.”
I dramatically stabbed Shrek into the cake.
Not to be outdone, Kenan revealed his next pick: the Geico gecko.
“KENAN!” I yelled, nearly knocking the table over from laughing so hard. “That’s not even a person!”
He smirked, sticking the gecko into the cake. “But you can’t deny he’s got charisma.”
It only got worse from there.
I added Danny DeVito, specifically from Matilda.
Kenan countered with the Kool-Aid Man.
“HOW IS THAT ATTRACTIVE?!” I cried, tears forming in my eyes from laughing so hard.
Kenan pointed at the camera. “Big. Strong. Energetic.”
“You need help,” I managed to say, clutching my stomach.
By the end, the cake was a war zone of chaos. Scarlett Johansson and Timothée Chalamet were surrounded by Tony the Tiger, an old Nokia brick phone, and a rotisserie chicken.
For the final round, I pulled out my wildcard: Larry the Lobster from SpongeBob.
Kenan paused, nodding in respect. “Valid.”
“And you?” I asked, curious what monstrosity he’d end on.
Kenan smirked, holding up Mr. Clean.
“KENAN!” I screamed, doubling over in laughter. “What is WRONG with you?!”
“He’s got personality!” Kenan shouted back, sticking him into the cake with pride. “That’s more than Larry the Lobster can say!”
When we stopped recording, we both stared at the cake for a long moment.
“This is a crime against humanity,” I said finally.
Kenan wrapped an arm around my shoulders, grinning. “And yet... it’s perfect.”

Hi! I saw you did Sally Face, and you hadn't gotten a request for it yet.
So if you can, how about a Sal fisher x Male reader that's into studying witchcraft and the paranormal?
You can decide if this would be a drabble, one-shot, etc..
A/n: say less anon leave this to me🫡
Little Dark Age
Sal Fisher x male!reader who’s into witchcraft
kinda goes from headcanons to a little one-shot !!
warnings?: mentions of witchcraft and the paranormal,
!-!more under the cut!-!
—Honestly you being into witchcraft and all things spooky is probably how you met Sal.
—He'd definitely be intrigued, and would probably ask you for help in finding out the secrets of Addison Apartments
—You both click instantly, with his curiosity of the paranormal and your knowledge of it, you both fit hand in hand.
—He asks you a lot of questions regarding the paranormal and that's how he found out you're also into witchcraft.
—He makes jokes about potions and hexes and is actually shocked when you tell him that those are real, though they're not as drastic as people think. He quickly get's over his shock and quickly finds it super cool that you know about all of this stuff.
—He tells you about Megan and you suggest having a Séance in the room her ghost resides in to make it easier for him to communicate with her. It's now a regular thing you both do, sometimes you're able to contact her and other times you're not, either way Sal is still pretty impressed with your skill.
—You guys tried to get Larry to join you both for a Séance once but he freaked out after just stepping foot in the fifth floor, like he just refuses.
—The entire gang calling you a witch whenever they're talking about you
—Todd corrected them all once, calling you a wizard and not a witch since you're male and now it's the only thing Larry calls you. At least Sal still uses your name sometimes but Larry seems to have taken a vow to never say it again.
—After gaining a bit more trust in your relationship Sal would tell you about the shadow ghost he'd been seeing around, asking for help to contact it or seeing if you know more about it.
—You freak out when he tells you about it though he can tell you're trying to hide it. You give him a Hazar necklace (one of those blue-eye amulets) and tell him you'll place a protection spell on him while you look into his shadow entity.
—He now wears that amulet religiously and practically never takes it off.
—He's asked you to try and contact Larry's dad the way you do with Megan but you don't follow through with it since you're not sure how Larry would feel about it.
—When he first meets Ash he stupidly asks you to make a love potion for him. You tell him you won't do it because it can be dangerous and you're jealous, and he's a bit sad but understands nonetheless.
—I ran out of ideas so here's a one-shot about the scenario above
----
"Come on Y/n please! Just this once," Sal begged you as he stood in your living room, hoping that this time your answer would change, however it didn't. "No." "I'll never ask you for anything ever again! I swear! Come on man..use your wizard powers and whip something up for me!" "For the last time Sal, I am not making you a "love potion" for some stupid girl." You crossed your arms, a pout resting on your lips as your eyebrows furrowed. "Ash isn't stupid, she's-" Sal sighed in a lovesick way and you rolled your eyes. "Making a love potion can be dangerous, they tend to backfire, you know?" You drew Sal's attention back to you, staring into the holes of his mask where you could just barely make out his blue eyes. It took him a minute, but slowly he nodded, a sigh that you could barely make out escaped his lips and you chuckled.
"You could just confess to her you know?" You mentally cursed yourself out for suggesting such a thing. Even though a part of you wanted to help your dear friend with his girl problems another part of you wanted said girl out of his life completely. Luckily, Sal quickly shut down the idea, "No way man, it was hard enough for me to just become friends with her." You shook your head, biting back a teasing grin as you stared at Sal, "well sorry I can't exactly help you here. If you need me to summon the dead I'm all ears but you and your girl problems can go." You pointed towards the door with a quirk of you eyebrow and you barely saw Sal roll his eyes as he turned to leave with a huff. "Thanks for nothing Y/n, see ya." "Yeah yeah, see ya Sally Face." You sighed, hearing the door close behind, walking over to lock it back. You stared at the wooden frame as your mind wandered to the conversation that took place moments prior. A love potion...would it be hypocritical if you,,,- no! You quickly shook those thoughts from your head, scolding yourself as you walked to your room. Using a love spell on Sally would be ridiculous, not to mention the dangers you just warned Sal himself about. You flopped onto your bed, groaning into your hands as gay thoughts of you and one of your best friends flooded your mind. You can see why Sal felt hopeless enough to ask for a love potion in moments like these, a dry chuckle leaving your mouth at how hypocritical you sounded. 'Just confess to her' you said, as if you yourself don't tremble at the thought of doing the same thing. 'Maybe one day I'll tell him', you think, knowing in your heart that it's probably not true.
----!----
( i hope my limited knowledge on witchcraft and the paranormal was enough)
Thanks for reading! Have a great day/night!!
My requests are OPEN so feel free to request anything! Just make sure you check out my Request Info first!

I have no clue how the industry works. Could this hurt Jared’s future in the industry, because he was negative about his former network?
https://t.co/Gy6dDjsnZi
No, for a few reasons. First, bonafide lead actors with high-rated shows are easily forgiven i.e. David Boreanaz sued Fox over profit participation dispute for 5 years (X) and get a lead role of Seal Team on CBS during that time. Second, published interviews by Nexstar/CW late last year and early this year contradicts their actions during the negotiation breakdown with CBS. Third, everybody is kind of mad at Nexstar. Larry Teng publicly blasted them over Independence's cancellation and he went on to direct a CBS Tracker episode, which I believe Jensen guest star in, and he's producing a new CBS show, Watson. A month earlier the trade media publicly mourned the demise of the old CW, meaning gone is the gateway for countless writers and showrunners and knowing that there isn’t anything to take its place.
Even though the old CW wasn't technically a network, out of the "big 5 network", I've never seen as much loyalty to one network as I've seen for the old CW/WB/UPN because of their wide variety of genre shows outside the formulaic shows of ABC, NBC, and CBS.
With that said, the old CW had also contributed to getting a few sub-par writers into positions they have no business being in. SPN’s own Megan Friztmartin being one of them and she went on to ruin Batman’s Tim Drake with her bisexual-fetish fixation. Fanboys complained that she made Tim all about his sexuality instead of a detective/student/hero. During this period the steaming wars caused a glut of contents and it became a golden age for bad actors and writers.

Squash's Reading List Year In Review 2024
(I've also posted this on WordPress here, where it might be more readable: https://jesuisgourde.wordpress.com/.../30/readinglist2024/)
Last year I read 92 books. I didn't plan on trying to surpass that number but I did, quite easily. This year I read 116 books. I didn't start off with any specific reading goal, but early on I decided to make it my goal to read more books by not-cis-men (women, trans/nonbinary people, etc) than by cis men. I hit that goal with 72 books. I did want to reread a number of books; I reread 7 books, but not all were the ones I listed in my last yearly reading review. I read 89 fiction books and 27 nonfiction. Of the nonfiction, the genres were mainly biography/autobiography, essay, science, and history. I read 45 books from small press publishers. I read 39 books by and/or about queer people. I don't have a super nice photo spread this year because I read a lot of books at work; I was going to screenshot my goodreads grid but unfortunately they have (frustratingly) changed the format from grid to list in the past week.
Here's a photo of the books I read that I do own, which isn't a whole lot, since I read most of the books at work this year:
I'll do superlatives at the end, here is the list of what I read this year, in chronological order. (Apologies for the random line breaks in the middle of the list, tumblr doesn't like it when you have 50+ lines without breaks)

I DNF'ed a few books, but all were put down with the intention of finishing them at some point. Mostly they were books I needed to read when I was less busy/in a different headspace. I DNF'ed: Soldiers Don't Go Mad: A true story of friendship, poetry and mental illness during the first world war by Charles Glass, a reread of Her by HD, and The Apple In The Dark by Clarice Lispector. The Lispector and HD are both modernist novels that need 100% attention, and the Glass book is a nonfiction book (very good so far) that I put down in favor of something that at the time was more interesting.
I gave out a lot of 5 stars this year. The books I rated as 5 stars were: The Changeling by Joy Williams, The Recognitions by William Gaddis, Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield, 33 1/3 Unknown Pleasures by Chris Ott, Transformer by Simon Doonan, Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo, Body by Harry Crews, Organ Meats by K-Ming Chang, Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe, and Fever Dream by Samanta Schweblin.
~Superlatives~
Like last year, I'm going to do runners-up because I read so many books.
Favorite book: The Recognitions by William Gaddis. I have to pick this one as my favorite for the year, because reading it was a journey, and because it was a book that was exactly everything I love in a book: fascinating, very human characters, weird formatting, great dialogue, metaphors galore, and most importantly, hundreds of cultural, artistic, historical, biblical and literary references. I started this book on January 4 and I finished it February 22. It was so unbelievably dense, probably the densest novel I've ever read, and I absolutely loved it. So much is going on in this novel that it's hard for me to summarize. In the very shortest version of a summary, it is a novel about counterfeits (specifically paintings, but counterfeits in all and any forms) and Catholicism in 1930s/40s New York. The main character is a young man named Wyatt Gwyon, a talented artist who instead of painting for himself, becomes a skilled counterfeiter-- not because he wants to make money, but because he's obsessed with the perfection of making exact interpretations of other people's art. He also struggles with religion and belief due to his strange religious upbringing. Many, many other characters are also focal points throughout the novel. The book is unique in that it doesn't use quotation marks when characters speak and rarely uses "he said"/"she said" or any similar phrase. But Gaddis is incredibly talented at writing dialogue so that each character's voice comes through, and it's obvious (except when he doesn't want it to be) who is speaking. Gaddis is also wonderfully scathing, and much of the novel is incredibly witty and intelligent observations about the Modernist art world and artistic spaces in general. The characters are all fascinating, there is a lot of mirroring and metaphors. I say this book is about counterfeits in every form, because it constantly highlights different ways in which each character is faking something, or lying, or pretending to be/know/do/think something they are not. This book was incredible, I annotated every single page and had so much fun reading it, even though or perhaps because it was so unbelievably dense.
Just for a bit of reference, here are a few of the more annotated pages in my copy of The Recognitions:
Runner up: Body by Harry Crews (more on this one further down)
Least favorite book: Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi. I was so disappointed by this book. The blurb on the back made it sound like it was going to be really beautiful and interesting and unique. It wasn't. It was all tell and no show. It follows Ada, a person who is born with one foot in the spirit world. A traumatic experience at university causes her to develop split personalities as the spirits from the other side step forward to protect her from trauma. Unfortunately, the spirits who now control her body have darker, more dangerous desires. Sadly, there was almost no plot, just description after description of Ada's unhealthy relationships and erratic behavior. But because the narrative is so distanced from said relationships and from Ada, the high stakes of this behavior is not felt, not really. Interesting characters can easily save 'all tell and no show type' books, but none of the characters get delved into with any depth, even Ada. The show rather than tell narrative also seriously undermines the poetic prose that crops up almost at random. This book felt flat. No plot, little stakes felt, no interesting characters, tell rather than showing everything, and it's not compelling at all.
Runner up: Playboy by Constance Debre. The back of this book describes it as a memoir detailing the writer's "decision, at age forty-three, to abandon her marriage, her legal career, and her bourgeois Parisian life to become a lesbian and a writer." Which sounds amazing! But it isn't! It's unbelievably pretentious and quite boring. It's mostly just complaining hidden by a facade of faux-philosophical meandering and directionless autobiographical vignettes. The author is a lawyer and she spends most of the time complaining about poor people and about women. It's so hilariously misogynistic. It's just various vignettes of her relationships with various women (who she dislikes and disparages for being femme or having bad bodies or for having lowbrow/uncultured interests etc etc) and then her going and visiting her ex-husband and teenage son, and then complaining that she has nothing. There's little to no emotion in the book, she is not charming, and her pseudo-philosophical musings are boring.
Most surprising/unexpected book: Body by Harry Crews. This book crept up on me in terms of a favorite. Crews' writing is not for everyone, but it's absolutely for me. The book follows bodybuilder Shereel Dupont and her trainer, Russell, who are at the world bodybuilding competition. Shereel has left home to compete over the past year and is now one of the most likely to win. Unfortunately, her family, who are "corpulent rednecks" with odd habits, show up to cheer her on, causing disruption and chaos throughout the hotel at which the competition is held and turmoil for Shereel herself. This book blew me away completely. Every time I thought it had reached a plateau of weirdness and chaos and insanity, it ratcheted that all up even higher, culminating in the most perfectly fucked up ending.
Runner up: Fever Dream by Samanta Schweblin. A mother trapped in the liminal space between life and death is made by an unfamiliar changeling child to retell the events of the recent past, desperately trying to pinpoint the moment she can reverse the environmental poisoning of herself and her daughter. I picked this book up because it sounded interesting, and then it ended up being an amazingly written short horror novel. It had a lot of interesting thoughts on motherhood and the horror of being a parent - not in a negative way, but the horror of wanting to protect and keep your child safe and the inability to do so.
Most fun book: Like Flies From Afar by K Ferrari. I fully judged a book by its cover with this one, and it did not disappoint. Small-time criminal/oligarch Mr Machi thinks he's hot shit, until he pops a tire on the way to an appointment and discovers an unidentifiable corpse in his trunk. As he scrambles to deal with the body, his paranoia grows as he tries to calculate who out of all his enemies and employees might be responsible, and who is trying to frame him, and who the body might be, and his life slowly transforms into a nightmare. Everyone in this book is loathsome, but in a way that is so fun to hate. The whole novel is a romp of panic and paranoia, people who think they're so cool and hard exposing how uncool they are, and a mystery that's so fun because watching the protagonist panic is a kind of schadenfreude.
Runner up: Transformer by Simon Doonan. This is a book for people who love Lou Reed, by a man who loves Lou Reed. It's just a wonderfully written biography that focuses mainly on the album Transformer, but also gives Lou Reed's history and is interspersed with stories about Doonan's own thoughts and experiences with Reed. The whole book is really passionate and vivid, and fun to read even if you don't have the album immediately to hand.
Best queer book: Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield. Leah, a marine biologist, has returned from a deep-sea voyage that went wrong. Her wife Miri begins to realize that something is wrong, and Leah came back changed. The narrative switches between Miri's point of view as she tries to reach Leah and struggles help her despite not knowing what's happening to her wife, and Leah's point of view as she remembers and recounts what happened to her during her submarine voyage. I started this book at work and brought it home. In the middle of reading it, I stopped to finish some task (I think it might have been to make dinner), and ended up having to cut the task short because I needed so badly to keep reading. The most compelling part of the book is the very different ways the two characters' love for each other shines through, even in the darkest moments of the novel.
Runner up: Darryl by Jackie Ess. The titular narrator of this novel discovers that he genuinely enjoys a cuckolding lifestyle, watching men have sex with his wife. But then he realizes that part of the reason he likes it so much, is that maybe he wants to be the wife. His explorations with sex and gender and relationships (and basketball) begin to unravel his marriage and his friendships and his own mind. Then he learns more about one of the men his wife has been sleeping with, and things get dangerous. I loved this book because despite it being written by a trans woman, the story doesn't at all go where you'd expect regarding gender or sexuality. It's satirical, it's witty, it's got some cool things to say about kink and about gender, and it's totally original.
Saddest book: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo. This is a classic I'd been meaning to read for a long time. The narrator is an American WWI soldier named Joe who was hit by an artillery shell and has woken in the hospital having had his arms and legs amputated, as well as most of his facial features mutilated beyond use/recognition. Trapped in his body, he drifts through memories and musings on life and war and philosophy as he tries to keep track of the days and to figure out some way to communicate with the hospital staff. It's no wonder this book is a classic. The writing is incredible, the imagery vivid and the plot totally gripping, even as it switches between the peaceful past and the horrible present. The end is completely gut-wrenching.
Runner up: Minor Detail by Adania Shibli. This novel explores what in history is a minor detail, and what impact that little moment might have on someone in the future. The first part of the novel opens in Palestine in 1949, in a military camp, where a group of Israeli soldiers (led by a captain suffering from a bite-induced hallucinogenic fever) kidnap, rape, and murder an unnamed Palestinian woman and bury her body in the desert. Fifty-odd years later, a Palestinian writer learns about this "small" moment in history, which occurred 25 years to the day before her birth, and becomes obsessed with learning more. She obtains an illegal pass to the Zone in which the woman died, determined to go there and find more information. I don't want to summarize much more because I don't want to give away any of the hard-hitting plot points. But Minor Detail was published in 2020, and it explores the cycles of violence and the ways in which oppression has not changed for the Palestinian people. It's a book that I wish I had read twice because (as the title suggests) there were a lot of small details that repeated themselves or were less noticeable at first but slowly grew or became important later in the story, and I'm sure I would have noticed more.
Weirdest book: The Changeling by Joy Williams. I love Joy Williams! I love everything she writes! Her themes are always so interesting and her writing style is so unique. The main character, a young woman named Pearl, escapes her terrible marriage by joining a rich older man and in doing so ends up living with him on an island that is populated by children he has taken under his wing. Pearl wants little to do with them and spends most of her days getting drunk by the pool -- the children are eerily smart and her son has joined their games and lessons, and they all want her attention. But her son is less and less her son as time goes on, and the children are not always the children, and the adults in the house are all bizarre and half-mad. I wish I could give a better summary, but Joy Williams books are always difficult to summarize, because so much of the stories are less about the plot and more about the characters just feeling things at the reader, and the plot is often built on or around odd occurrences and philosophical musings. This book blew me away with its imagery and its metaphors. I want to reread it, because it was just so amazing. My absolutely favorite thing about Joy Williams (and this is true for all of her books) is the way she writes these incredibly profound and philosophical phrases like they're nothing at all, like they're so easy, just breezes on by them even though she's just punched you in the chest. It's amazing.
Runner up: Fever Dream by Samanta Schweblin.
Most gripping book: Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland by Patrick Radden Keefe. This book is an absolute masterclass in pacing. It tells just a few fragments out of the whole history of the Irish Troubles, but the fragments that are focused on are woven together with brilliant timing, humanizing and vivid portrayals, fantastic analysis and contextualization, and altogether excellent writing. Every time I put this book down I wanted to keep reading, to know what was going to happen next. The book has 3 focal points: Gerry Adams, (alleged) leader of the IRA; Dolors Price, a member of the IRA; and the family of Jean McConville, a woman kidnapped by the IRA. At first, all three storylines are disparate, but Keefe slowly weaves them together, pulling all the threads of context and action and years in prison or government or delinquent schools together slowly but steadily. The book reads like a thriller, and I adored it completely. (Yes, I do know about the miniseries. I haven't finished watching it yet!)
Runner up: Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield.
Book that taught me the most: Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe
Runner up: The Toaster Project: Or A Heroic Attempt to Build a Simple Electric Appliance from Scratch by Thomas Thwaites. This could also go under weirdest book, easily. As a graduate art school project, Thwaites decided to attempt to build the simplest (and cheapest) appliance he could think of - a toaster - fully from scratch. Quite literally, starting with mining the elements to make the right kinds of metal and figuring out how to make the right kind of plastic. Half of the book is Thwaites' attempts to build various elements of a toaster - and how they go wrong, or right, and why it's so hard. The other half discusses all the processes that go in to making all these elements in a more manufactured setting, their impact on the environment and the economy, and the difference between cheap mass-produced products that break down vs more expensive products that last longer. The writing was fun and included photos and diagrams and interviews with various industry professionals Thwaites contacted to learn more.
Most interesting/thought provoking book: The Recognitions by William Gaddis
Runner up: Organ Meats by K-Ming Chang. I've now read everything this author has published and this is by far her best book. Her narrative style is so unique and so poetic, and the themes she always comes back to are so interesting, and they culminate in this amazing novel. This magical realist novel centers around two best friends, Anita and Rainie, who are both first generation Taiwanese-American. The story opens when they are adolescents, and Anita has recently learned that they come from generations of dog-headed women and women-headed dogs. They vow to become dogs together, tying a string around each other's throats as collars and playing at dogs in the empty lot near their apartment complex. But Anita's dreamlike imagination and obsessively loyal personality starts to clash with Rainie's more reserved nature, and when it becomes too much, Rainie's family moves away. Rainie grows up, while unbeknownst to her, Anita has sunk into a dreamworld and her body has begun to rot. She narrates her family's past and her mother's bloodline because she cannot narrate her own present. When she returns to the town she grew up in, Rainie discovers Anita's condition, and knows that she is the only one who can save her. This novel is beautiful, incredibly poetic, and experiments with formatting and narration in really unique ways. Its exploration of friendship and queerness and obsession and tradition and folklore is absolutely fascinating. I often write in my books and underline sentences or paragraphs that I really love. I didn't write in this one, because I would have ended up underlining the entire novel.
Longest/shortest book: My longest book was The Recognitions by William Gaddis at 952 pages, and my shortest was Notes On Camp by Susan Sontag at 57 pages.
General thoughts on all the other books that didn't get superlatives:
-Child of God by Cormac McCarthy. This is the first McCarthy book I've ever read (I know, I know) and I really enjoyed it. You just watch a horrible guy walk around in the rural countryside of a small town, doing increasingly fucked up things and committing various awful crimes. Which is exactly up my alley in terms of literature. The main character, Ballard, is someone who is so weird and pathetic that he becomes turned inside out into evilness. You feel sorry for him but you also hate him and he's also fascinating because he's so fucking weird. It's a great book.
-The Ghost Network by Catie Disabato. This book was so much fun to read while living in Chicago. It's a rock n roll mystery novel that riffs on Situationism and the L tracks and maps. A rock star disappears, and the main character who is a fan of her's is determined to find out what happened to her. What she uncovers is a series of clues based on defunct lines and stations of the Chicago transit system, and the Situationist concept of detournment, which lead her towards finding out what actually happened to the rock star. This book was so much fun, and so much of it was based on real life defunct train lines and the actual Situationists, both of which I found really interesting. The ending was also just so good! Somehow I managed to have read everything I needed to in order to get every single reference in the book, which was really surprising to me, because they all came from different places.
-New Animal by Ella Baxter. This book baffled me. It is about a woman who works as a makeup-artist at her family's morgue. When her mother dies unexpectedly, she skips the funeral and goes to stay at her estranged father's house. While there, trying to figure out how to vent her grief, she decides to try out the local kink scene. Her first experience is with a dom who is a manipulative, horrible asshole. She has a bad time, but wants to try again, so she goes to a place that hosts scenes. She acts like she knows what she's doing when she doesn't, no one gives her any instruction, so she fucks up massively, and everyone has a bad time. It's the worst portrayal of the kink scene I think I've ever encountered. The author said she did a lot of research but it just seems like a lot of terrible assumptions and misinterpretations. I thought it was going to be a book that positively portrayed kink and people who like the kink scene, but it's very much not. It didn't even feel like the author was doing this so the character would learn that she can't run from her grief. It seemed more like the author had one bad experience due to poor communication or shitty individuals, and then decided that's what the whole scene was like.
-Harold's End by JT LeRoy. I read this book in high school (or perhaps just after graduating) and totally fell in love with it, and then never saw another copy until recently. It was so good to reread it, to re-experience the gorgeous watercolor portraits that come with it. The novel follows a young street kid/hustler who lives with other street kids; all his friends have pets but he doesn't. A john takes a liking to him and buys him a snail as a pet, who he names Harold. The book follows him as he lives on the streets and as his relationship with the john develops. The book is classic JT LeRoy, and the end is LeRoy's usual style of characters experiencing a life lesson and growth but not necessarily in a happy way. It definitely holds up!
-Wittgenstein's Mistress by David Markson. This was such a fun and weird book and I really enjoyed it. Markson's idea for the novel was "what if someone actually lived the way that Wittgenstein's Tractatus suggests?". What we get is a woman who believes she is the last person on earth (it is never confirmed whether this is true or not). She muses on life, culture, art, philosophy, and her past, and discusses her trips across the world despite its emptiness. But her story changes constantly; she's always referencing things she said before and editing herself. It's a weird, fun, fascinating novel with a lovably weird main character.
-A Feast Of Snakes by Harry Crews. Yet another fucked up book that I loved. It follows Joe Lon Mackey, a former high school football star that now lives a dead-end life in his hometown in Georgia. Each year the town hosts the Rattlesnake Roundup, where people come from many states away to try and catch as many rattlesnakes as they can in order to win a competition. Joe Lon is in charge of the event now that his father is too old and ill. He's uncomfortably self-aware of his own personal failings and his inadequacy and his abusive relationship with his wife; he'd rather not think about any of it and is incapable of figuring out how to change things. But his old girlfriend is returning for the event, and his father's attempts to control the goings-on from afar mean he's unable to stop thinking about where his life has ended up and where it's going. All this drives him slowly crazy with desperation until the insane ending. Crews is incredibly talented at writing characters that are likeable despite being so flawed and fairly awful people. This book is no exception.
-Milkshake by Travis Dahlke. What a weird novel! In a near-future dystopian heatwave, an 11 year old girl escapes the environmental catastrophe by traveling back in time to her past life as a fertilizer salesman whose marriage is slowly collapsing. I really enjoyed it, because it was just so odd. Now that I'm thinking about it, I feel as though it would have been really interesting to read just before or just after reading Tentacle; both books focus specifically on time travel and on environmental disaster.
-Hurricane Season by Fernanda Melchor. At the opening of the box, a Witch has been murdered in a small village in Mexico called La Matosa. The rest of the chapters are narrated by different characters, who all have some small or large hand in the death of the Witch, who was a woman who the whole town visited in secret for medicine, fortune-tellings, and advice. The narrating characters include a schoolgirl, a drug dealer, a prostitute, a hapless husband who wants to make something of himself, and a teenager in love with his young girlfriend. With each narration we learn more about the Witch, and her mother who was a Witch before her. Slowly, we get inklings of the nature of the murder, and the revelation at the end is brutal. Melchor's writing is incredibly vivid, and the characters are all caught in the cycle of poverty, driven by superstition and fear and hardship. None of the characters are likeable, but they're all so human.
-Biography Of X by Catherine Lacey. In a dystopic alternate-universe US, where the Southern Territory split from the North after WWII and established a fascist theocracy, a woman named CM grieves her recently deceased wife X, who was a famous artist. Despite X's wishes, CM decides to delve into her wife's past, researching her history before they met and before she was known as X. She uses her credentials and privileges as a journalist to cross into the Southern Territory and learn about X's family and the communities from which she came, her activism and her hidden lives, and begins to realize that maybe learning all this about the woman she loved won't benefit her in the long run and that maybe their relationship wasn't as rosy as she thought. This novel combined fiction and real life in really fascinating ways, and includes both real and fake sources in its footnotes.
-The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides. A famous and successful painter murders her husband and then refuses to speak. A psychologist who is also a fan of her work is determined to get her to speak again. Obsessed with uncovering the truth, he ends up taking risks that threaten himself and his patient. A fun mystery that went down easy. It didn't attempt to be too realistic from the start, so suspension of disbelief wasn't hard. I do think the book could have done without the entire last part. Leaving it on the realization of what had happened and allowing the reader to sit with that realization (especially with how creatively the twist is presented) would have had more impact I think than the slower and less engaging denouement of the last 3 chapters, which were far weaker than the rest of the book.
-Acid Snow by Larry Mitchell. I reread this book for the first time since about 2009 and really enjoyed it. It's a very sad novel about a man living in NYC during the height of the AIDS epidemic. Most of his friends and lovers have died and he's scared and sad about his own life and cynical about love, but he's attracted to the man who owns the shop below his apartment. It's a dark book, sad and scared and jaded. I think the main character's anxiety and grief that slowly escalates into paranoia is an amazingly surreal way to portray all the emotions that consumed the queer community at that time. I also loved the sort of lack of closure at the end - because many people didn't get that.
-Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer. I don't generally go for science fiction novels, but I read this one because so many people said they had liked it. I really enjoyed it. The unnamed narrator, a biologist, is part of an all-female expedition into a harsh, unknown territory that has appeared adjacent to the US. The suspense and strangeness of the novel had excellent pacing. The descriptions were also so vivid and clear, which made the story's weirdness so compelling. I loved watching the main character struggle to remain objective the whole time while knowing that she's failing. Her growing fascination and terror is so fun to read as each feeling tries to overtake the other. I also think it was great as a standalone and I feel no interest in reading the other books in the same universe.
-Nevada by Imogen Binnie. I'm a bad queer person, I hated this book. In it, the narrator, a trans woman, is frustrated with her life and has just broken up with her girlfriend, so she steals her ex's car and drives away, ending up in a small town where she spends the night with a department store employee. I just really don't like books that are meandering tell and no show without characters or a plot that are interesting. This entire book felt like someone recounting their weekend over breakfast, complete with casual informal language and overuse of the word "like". Which would be fine if any of the characters were compelling, or if the plot was really interesting and went somewhere, but it didn't. A good portion of it is just musings on New York City, but without the creativity or vividness that other portrayals of NYC have to offer. After I read it, I learned this book was kind of the catalyst for a specific style of trans writing. Which also explains why I hated Detransition, Baby when I read it a couple years ago, as it's a sort of literary descendant of this. I'm happy to read books that are tell rather than show....so long as something interesting happens or at least one of the characters is unique and compelling. This book sadly has neither.
-Essex County by Jeff Lemire. I read this for an English class in university, so this was a reread and I really enjoyed reading it a second time! All the stories in this collection are so beautiful and compelling, all the characters are so real. And the art style is fantastic. The stories revolve around characters living in the titular Essex County in Canada, across a number of generations. It weaves together their relationships and their lives, much of which revolves around hockey. There were some storylines I remembered quite well and others I didn't remember at all, so it was really nice to revisit this one.
-Ravage: An Astonishment of Fire by MacGillivray. Man, this book had so much potential. This novel is a fake biography of a fake poet who disappeared from a Scottish island in the 1960s after falling into delusions that he has become a demon. The fascinating thing about this book (at first), is that it's completely convinced that it is an actual nonfiction book. It gives no hints that it's fake, and the first 50 pages are convincingly written with an academic, nonfiction voice as the novel is utterly convinced of its own delusion of factualness. The novel claims to be an analysis of found papers: first, the poetry and written tracts of Tristjan Norge, a Norwegian poet, then the analysis of his works by MacGillivray, and finally, the diary of his companion Luce Montcrieff. Unfortunately, it is fairly repetitive in a way that bogs the reader down quite a bit. Even so, I think I would have enjoyed much, much more if the ending did not abruptly switch genres to a supernatural/fantasy novel in a way that was startling and had no previous indications of earlier in the book. Up to the last 20 pages I thought it was interesting, even when it was dense, but the end felt like the author didn't know how to end the novel and just used the deus ex machina of supernatural occurrences.
My goal for 2025 is to read majority nonfiction. I don't know if I'm going to actually meet that goal, but I'll try. I don't have any goals for how many books I want to read, especially because I tend to read nonfiction quite a bit slower than fiction, so I don't have a good idea of what my reading amount goal should actually be. This year I also forgot entirely about my attempt to read all of Jean Genet's (translated) works, so I will hopefully actually meet that goal in 2025, since I only have one or two books left to read. But my first three books of the year are going to be Soldiers Don't Go Mad by Charles Glass, which I started this year but didn't finish, The Declared Enemy: Texts and Interviews by Jean Genet, and Rogues: True Stories of Grifters, Killers, Rebels and Crooks by Patrick Radden Keefe.

Steel Heart Chapter 16:
These Inconvenient Fireworks
Hange x Reader Chapter Index Masterlist AO3
Megan's Note: Title is after a Larry Stylinson fanfic I read when I was 14. The author sold hardcover copies of their fanfic on lulu.com (this was common with 1D fanfic authors) and at 14 years old I fr made my mom buy me printed gay fanfiction. She was just happy her daughter was getting into the love of reading like her! LMAO. I start fall semester tomorrow (UGH) and a new job next month. Posted: 8/25/24
Word Count: 3.8k
“Don’t be ridiculous,” Levi scoffed. “If there was a man, why would—”
“We’re being watched,” you whimpered into Hange’s neck. Levi crossed his arms and eyed you skeptically. “I did not have a nightmare, Levi! There was a knight in the forest! He had blonde hair, was tall, covered in blood, and had a crested sword like the Knights of the Royal King’s Guard! But I’ve never seen him before . . .”
“Squads one and two, come with me,” Levi beckoned the knights away from you. Levi’s unexpected commands made you unsure if he believed you. Tears fell down your face and Hange’s breath was on your neck. Levi was whispering with twenty knights huddled together in the darkness. Then, the knights broke apart and went into their tent. Your heart plummeted. The thought of the knights returning to bed while the strange blonde knight raided the camp made you sick. You pulled away from Hange and wiped your tears. “It should be around four a.m. since Franz, Daz, Samuel, and Thomas were on watch. But Daz is going to find a clear view of the sky and hopefully, the stars will be visible enough to tell time . . .” Levi kneeled beside Hange and put a hand on your shoulder. “The knights are getting some equipment and going to scavenge the forest for the man you saw and anything suspicious.”
“T-thank you,” your chest unraveled a little at the assurance that something would be done.
“I want to speak with you,” Levi stood up and motioned to Hange, who was clutching your cloak around their naked body.
“No! Please . . . don’t leave me,” you said. You grabbed Hange’s arm, and their half-lidded eyes glanced at Levi. Your wide eyes studied Hange’s face, seeking comfort. They blinked a few times. They looked lethargic and exhausted; even when they nodded, they were slow. A tinge of admiration spread through your chest when Hange gently grasped the hand you placed on their arm. They held your hand against their heart.
“What do you want to talk about?” They asked Levi, and he crossed his arms. You noticed Hange cared for you as they did what you asked. They stayed. Levi hesitated, and his eyes shifted knowingly between you and Hange. Knights emerged from their tents with candles and their swords drawn. Connie approached the lifeless campfire and worked on igniting the logs.
“It’s not that I do not believe you saw a man, but I think we will be alright. Depending on the time, we will get a head start on our day,” You recalled Levi having insomnia and not sleeping well through the night. Levi averaged two to four hours of sleep per night. In the past, Levi, being awake, had managed to help predict when you would have nightmares and he was ready to calm you down so you wouldn’t disturb the other knights. Levi sleeping during the incident of you in the forest could point to the time being near dawn. “How do you feel? Do you feel tired?”
“I don’t think . . . I don’t think I could go back to sleep,” you stammered.
“Okay,” Levi softly said.
“What do you think, Hange?” Hange’s inner eyebrows were perked up like they were trying to keep their eye open. They squeezed your hand and rubbed their thumb against your skin.
“I’m going to try to get more sleep, Princess,” Hange admitted.
“Okay, I guess I can try too.” Light and warmth burst from behind Hange and Levi. Connie stepped away from igniting the fire and turned to notice a knight running back from a part of the forest. His hasty nature did not appear worrisome or like he found the bloodied knight in the forest. His face was determined yet calm. He looked familiar and you recognized he was one of the knights who came up to you after you found Franz. He was one of the guards on rotation.
“Commander! Captain! I found a clear view of the sky and did the math. It is around four forty-five and five fifteen,” Daz said. “The sun will rise soon and we’ll have more daylight.”
“Great work, Daz,” Hange said and groaned. There wasn’t enough time to go back to sleep and feel rested. Breakfast would be between six and six thirty. Daz's concerned eyes studied you, checking how you were.
“How are you, your Highness?” He gingerly asked.
“I feel safer, thank you, sir.”
“I should start taking down the tent instead. It’s best if we go bathe right after eating, and then we can head to Flegel’s Farm,” Hange rubbed their eye. You could tell your incident woke Hange from a deep sleep. Guilt coursed through you as your outburst woke everyone up. But he was real. The bloodied knight with the crested sword was in front of you.
He’s still out there.
Watching you.
He’s real.
You leaned forward and wrapped your arms around both Hange and Levi.
“I’m sorry for my outburst,” you whimpered and Hange rubbed your back. “He’s out there, I swear.”
While the knights scoured the forest for the bloodied knight or anything related to the Marleyan Cult, you helped Hange take down the conference tent. They had to tell you what to do, and you appreciated their patience. Hange returned your cloak and told you to keep the hood on. You didn’t mind because the air was chilly. You rolled your bedroll up and Hange took it for you.
The morning rays of sunlight broke through the canopy of trees, making the forest more comforting and less frightening. The green grass returned, and the trees weren’t shadows anymore. Their brown trunks were magnificent, and you could see past the light of the fire, which gave you a sense of safety. But deep inside, you felt unfriendly eyes on you.
After a half hour of heading into the forest, the Knights returned to the camp at different intervals. The knights who usually prepared meals started with breakfast. Eventually, all twenty knights returned. No one was harmed, and no bloodied knight was found. But something felt wrong and you trusted your instincts.
Levi wanted you to eat more protein and told the knight serving to give you three eggs and more chicken than rice. You cringed at the thought of forcing yourself to eat all the chicken and eggs Levi wanted you to eat. Especially since the rice felt more satiating. You argued with Levi that you wouldn’t eat another plate unless he took off half of the chicken and added more rice. Levi rolled his eyes but obliged.
Hange was sitting on a log in between two of their squad members. One of them you’ve seen Hange talk to before because he’s one of the only other knights who wears glasses, and the other knight was a man with short dark hair. The guy with the glasses passed Hange a delicate cloth, and then Hange wiped the lenses of their glasses. The two knights were next to Hange, and you hesitated to ask them to scoot over. You sat on the ground next to Hange’s feet, which amused Hange. Abel and Keiji offered to scoot over so you could sit next to Hange. Eventually, you did, which only ended up with you following the three when they got in line for food.
Hange was retelling a story to Abel and Keiji about how they caught a frog in the river when they were younger, but you couldn’t pay attention. You tried ignoring it as you ate your chicken while standing beside Hange. Hairs on the back of your neck stood up and you couldn’t shake the feeling that you and the knights were in danger. Though more than forty knights were in the camp and would lay down their lives for you, you remained fearful of the bloodied knight. You weren’t dreaming.
He’s still out there.
Watching you.
He’s real.
As the knights cleaned and put away the cooking equipment, Hange suggested going to the river. You didn’t want to go to the river anymore. You worried being with fewer people might make the bloodied knight approach you. What if while you and Hange were down at the river, he slits Hange’s throat and takes you? You’d rather have him kill you than Hange. The bloodied knight’s piercing eyes flashed in your mind and you gasped.
“Are you okay, Y/N?” Hange asked and you realized you stopped walking. Hange looked over their shoulder at you and then walked to you. You were frozen in your tracks. They eyed you, analyzing your body and then approached your trembling form. Hange placed their hands on your shoulder and you looked up at Hange’s pretty eye. The heaving in your chest slowed and you blinked a couple of times.
“Hange,” your whispered voice cracked. “I can’t shake the feeling that we are being watched.” Hange comfortably rubbed their thumb against your shoulders. You gave in to the feel of their soothing touch. They pulled you into their chest and you surrendered to their touch. Hange would keep you safe. Your breathing became even and Hange stroked your back again.
“Let’s bathe quickly so we can leave this place.” Hange soothed. They pulled away from the hug and wrapped a protective arm around your shoulder. They guided you toward the river. The sound of the water was reaching your ears and then Hange gasped. You both stopped in your tracks.
In the distance on the shoreline was a small brown fur ball with a small white fur ball for a tail. A large smile grew when you saw the furry animal's head raise, revealing its long ears. A small cottontail rabbit was drinking from the river. Hange turned to you and with their index finger over their lips. They drew their sword from the waist of their tan pants and handed it to you. Then Hange held a hand up to tell you to stay and you silently nodded at them.
The bunny was frozen. It sensed you and Hange. Hange silently crept closer, and you hoped this was the moment Hange would catch you a pet bunny. The brown bunny hopped away from Hange and you both held your breath, hoping you didn’t spook the bunny. Hange took another step forward and then waited. The bunny was petrified but anchored itself in place. Then Hange took another step and was a few feet away from your future pet. Hange dived for the animal and reached out their arms for the bunny. Their fingers grazed the bunny’s fur. The cottontail pounced away from the grasps of Hange and went into the tree line.
“Hange!” You ran to Hange’s form lying on the dried pebbles of the shoreline. They winced and then pushed themselves up onto their knees. You crouched down next to them, “Are you okay? You’re always so close! I know you are going to catch us a bunny!”
“Those cuties are quick. Bunnies can run up to eighteen miles per hour, you know.” Hange dusted off their shirt. They got their white shirt even more dirty and will definitely need to wash it while bathing. “They're quick as a flash.”
“Quick like lighting!”
“Like lighting, for sure!” Hange started unbuttoning their white shirt. “I should wash this first to let it dry, " they said more to themselves.
You placed Hange’s sword on the pebbles and then turned around to start striping your clothes. You looked across the river and back toward the camp. You and Hange were alone.
Hopefully.
“I bet the next time we see a bunny, you’ll catch it!” You encouraged Hange as you pulled down the tan slacks and shimmied off your pants. You folded your pants and then laid them against your boots. The light-hearted thought of a cute furry bunny roaming around the tent and feeding her carrots while holding it like a baby crossed your mind. The sloshing sounds of the river pulled you out of your daydream. Hange was naked and holding their dirty white top. They sat on their knees and their back was to you. They dipped the dirt-stained part of the fabric into the water and used their thumb to circle the area. “Let me help with that! I know a quicker way!”
“Oh yeah? The Princess is going to show me how to wash clothes? How unexpected.” Hange kept circling the stain with their thumb. You pulled off the cloak and unbuttoned the white shirt. Without a care to fold them, you piled them on top of the pants. You splashed Hange when you hastily stepped into the river. “Careful! I don’t want to get my entire shirt wet! It will take forever to dry!”
“May I?” You wanted to show Hange the technique Fairy Godmother Ymir showed you during childhood. Hange handed over their shirt and you placed most of the fabric between your bicep and ribs. Then, you fisted the fabric on the sides of the stains, letting the fabric slack. You dipped the dirt-stained part into the river’s water and used your fisted hands to rub your fingers against each other. The technique Fairy Godmother Ymir taught you was like using your fingers to act as a miniature corrugated washboard. You pulled the dripping fabric out of the water and squeezed. When you unfolded the damp bunched-up fabric, the dirt stain was gone. “Ta-da!”
“What?! It’s that easy?!” Hange gasped. They grabbed their shirt from you and tilted it against the sunlight, trying to see if the stain was gone.
“Yes! Fairy Godmother Ymir taught me that when I started learning to clean blood stains from my underwear!” Hange’s jaw was dropped and there was a fond satisfaction with impressing Hange. Hange stood up from the water, taking their shirt to their pile of clothes.
“And all this time, I’ve been doing dumb circles, which takes forever sometimes!” Hange placed the wet part of the shirt facing up so the crisp air could dry it. You started splashing water onto your arms and rubbing your legs. Hange sat on your left and you began rubbing your arms in the water. They poked your cheek and stretched out their legs. “Thank you, Princess Y/N, you changed my life!”
“You changed my life . . .” Their doe-eye glanced at you, causing your cheeks to turn pink. They darted away from you and you wanted them to look at you again. Their lips looked soft, and Hange started rubbing their legs, which were submerged in the river. Then, Hange took out the hair tie that held their short hair back. You pulled your hair tie out, letting your hair fall behind you. You wanted Hange to say something—to say anything.
Say something!
“Are you excited to try on dresses for your wedding?”
Not that, UGH!
“I-I haven’t thought of that, honestly . . . I guess I am.” You noticed your hands trembling as you pulled your knees to your chest. You wrapped your arms around your knees, protecting yourself. Your heart. Then you said, “I don’t want to marry Prince Marco.”
“I know, Y/N, I’m—”
“No, Hange . . . I don’t want to marry Prince Marco .” There was a pressure behind your nose and you inhaled deeply. You did not want to cry. Small fishes swam by in the river, but you weren’t in the right headspace to be excited about tiny fish. The small fish probably could choose who they wanted to mate with. They did not have to worry about a cult hunting them. Those fish didn’t suddenly get the rug ripped from under them and forced into a new life—one of danger, death, and responsibility. “I’m forced to be married to a stranger and I’m forced to feel on the edge constantly because of a cult hunting me. I was forced to leave my cottage, books, clothes, and possessions behind . . . I want to choose something in my life!”
You tilted your head toward Hange, and their confused expression had a hint of helplessness. Their lips looked soft, and Hange’s brown eye usually comforted you. But their glance made you feel cornered and guilty.
“You’ll get your opportunity to make your own choices.”
“I know what I want.”
“You know?”
“I know . . .” You’ve seen Christa and Ymir do it before and tried your best to replicate them. With a flood of courage, you turned and held yourself in a steadied stance on your knees before Hange. You grabbed their face, leaned in, closed your eyes, and smashed your lips onto theirs. The flesh was indistinguishable and you felt the tip of their nose on your cheek. You felt a new, exhilarating rush through your body and ache between your legs. Hange’s hands fumbled around and they grabbed your wrist and used their other hand to push on your chest.
Hange’s eye was wide and their pupil was dilated. Their face had a rosy hue and their lips were flushed. Your lips tingled, and you wiped them with the back of your hand. Hange brought their knees to their chest and hugged themselves. They were silent and downcasted their eye to the river’s water.
Guilt surged through your body, and you carefully sat in the river again. You crossed boundaries and possibly upset your friend. You just wanted to try it—once. You pulled your knees to your chest. Pressure built behind your nose and you blinked rapidly, avoiding tears.
The water shimmered from the morning’s daylight and the sun’s rays warmed your skin. A light breeze rippled the water on the river’s surface and blew over the taller grass stems on the other side. A bird unapologetically tweeted from high in the trees.
“You should not have done that,” Hange whispered and your heart twinged. They were blushing and hiding themselves. Hange sniffed and they rubbed their eye. “They will have my head for that.”
“Who?” It felt hard to breathe and the Hange getting in trouble raised the guilt in your chest. You should not have crossed the line. You made your own bold choices but at what cost? You can choose to do whatever you want, but you can not choose your consequences.
“The Queen and her King. Marco’s parents. They would flog me and then kill me for ‘corrupting the Princess.’ I wouldn't be alive by the end of the day when they found out.”
“I thought my parents were nice . . .” Hange covered their eye with their hand and you heard them hold back a whimper. “I’m sorry, Hange. I just wanted to try kissing.”
“We can not speak of this,” Hange whispered harshly.
“This was my first kiss . . .” you whispered. Hange sniffled again and a tear streamed down their face. They wiped it off quickly and your heart ached at the sight of the vulnerable form.
“It’s my first since I lost my eye.” Hange bitterly said. There was a pinch in your chest, and you recalled what Hange had told you last night. Hange was dating someone when they lost their eye . . . and you tied together that the girl did not kiss or show Hange affection after their injury, which ultimately led to their relationship ending. “Damn it!” The water sloshed as they stood up.
“What’s wrong?”
“I knew you liked me,” Hange looked at the pebbles by their feet as they walked toward the grass. You chased after them, sloshing water and dripping onto the pebbles. You grabbed their wrist and they pulled away from you.
“Hange!”
“I knew you liked me and I couldn’t stop myself!”
“I’m sorry, Hange! I am so sorry. Please, we can forget about this! Please don’t be mad!” Hange crossed their arms and looked at their feet, their hair masked their face. The knight in shining armor from the Karanese District was helpless, confused, and defenseless. You held onto their biceps, looking up at them. A tear dropped from their face and they wiped it instantly away, again.
“I’m not mad at you, Y/N. I’m mad at myself.” You didn’t know what to do, and you gently hugged Hange. You rubbed their back like they did when you needed comfort. “I like you, Y/N, and I know you like me. You are painfully obvious—your stares, your questions, your curious nature about romance. You don’t take your eyes off my body when I undress.”
“I’m sorry,” your heart fluttered at Hange’s words. They liked you back, and some part of you hoped there was a chance.
“Stop apologizing,” Hange clipped and you nodded obediently. “We should get back.”
“I haven’t washed my hair—we both haven’t yet.” Hang pulled away from your hug and they walked back over to their pile of clothes.
“That’s because you were going around kissing some knight in the river.”
“Hange . . . I don’t want to marry Prince—”
“It doesn’t matter what you want!” You flinched at Hange raising their voice. “You’re a Princess going to become Queen and I’m a knight. I’m just a knight.”
“But you like me, right? So why can’t we date?”
“Oh you’re so naive—”
“I’m sorry!” A storm of thoughts loomed over Hange and you, the rage between desire and the constraint of duty. You stood next to Hange, watching them dress themselves. You crossed your arms, covering your exposed chest. Hange was hopping on one leg, trying to get their tan slacks over their damp skin. You wanted to explore love and explore it with Hange.
“Listen to me,” Hange put their hands on your shoulders after they zipped their slacks. You accidentally glanced at their boobs and then blushed guiltily. “I-I want to call you mine,” their voice cracked as they confessed. Your heart raced, noticing the window of opportunity—your desires in reach. “But if we are caught, I will die.”
“No!” You took Hange’s wrists from your shoulders and held their hands. “I want a chance with you . . . I want to be yours and I want you to be mine. You are my best friend—the light in the dark. You are my savior—my angel. You were sent to protect me.”
“I should not give in to temptation,” Hange whimpered, resting their forehead on yours.
“I want to be yours even in secret.”
“I should not give in to temptation.”
“I will protect you if the Queen and her King find out.”
“I should not give in to temptation,” Hange inhaled sharply. Their anguished face was evident. Their eye was squeezed shut, and their lips were trembling. You placed their hands on your waist and then yours on their shoulders. They fondly grasped your waist, feeling your damp, soft skin, getting a glimpse of what could be theirs—giving in. They whispered, “I am going to die if we get caught . . .”
“Give me your life and I’ll give you mine,” you whispered. Hange tilted their chin and gently pressed their lips against yours. You followed Hange’s tender rhythm. You affectionately cupped one of Hange’s cheeks and leaned into them. They pulled your waist into their hips and you whimpered. Your heart skipped a beat and you felt a tingle and warmth spread through your body. You will always remember this moment with Hange by the river. The secret that will stay between the two of you.
And the man watching.

Can I request Sal Fisher (Sally Face) boyfriend hcs? Thank you!
You sure can! Thank you for requesting and I hope you enjoy it!
Sal Fisher x reader
Summary: Fluffy hcs about Sal as a bf
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shy boy
Stutters every time he asks you on a date for a while after you get together.
Gets nervous when you ask to see him without the mask even if you’ve seen him without it before
Poor boy is constantly anxious about you not wanting to be with him anymore.
Spoils you the best he can
You kissed his mask while wearing bright red lipstick once and he almost cried when a week later Lisa cleaned his mask while he was in the shower
That was also the day you saw his face for the first time
It took half an hour to convince Sal to come out of his room so you could get a better look at his face
You two ended up cuddling on Sal’s bed later that night to prove to him that you loved him no matter what
Lets you play with his hair(braiding it, messing with it, etc.)
Openly admits to liking it when you mess with his hair while he lays his head on your chest
100% takes you to hang with Larry and get high in the treehouse while listening to Sanity’s Fall
Sal is a big baby when he’s high, but gets riled up [;)] VERY easily.
Sal really likes head massages, he discovered that when he was complaining about his head hurting from wearing the mask all day and you decided to give him a head massage
He no longer goes without them
He also enjoys skincare with you
He’s found that the mask feels less gross and uncomfortable that way
He tries to keep you out of harm’s way, A.K.A. Trying to convince you not to come on demon hunts
It doesn’t work
After Sal obtained the SuperGearboy and started talking to Megan on a regular basis, and finding demons and demonic symbols, you stopped allowing him to go on the missions without you.
Hence why you ALSO can’t eat bologna now.
He definitely loves being little spoon, it makes him feel safe
He loves when you sit in his lap and read a book or play on your phone or whatever while he plays video games
There have been multiple times where Sal has asked you to put his hair up for him
Sal likes giving you little origami he made for you
He showed affection through small gifts and physical affection
He will definitely play video games with you
He’ll carry things for you, open doors, drive you around, etc.
ALWAYS hanging on you
When you aren’t there pretty much all he’ll talk about is you
He’ll walk you to your car after school
Most definitely would try listening to your music
You get LOTS of positive affirmations from this man
He tells you every. Single. day. About how lucky he is to have you and how beautiful/handsome you are and how he’d be a fool if he ever left you
Don’t worry about him cheating on you, he thinks you’re too much of a treasure to let go or hurt
He single-handedly ruined your standards for other guys
For my ladies: he will get you anything you need or ask for during your period.
He asked Larry and Lisa about it and they told him what to do
He will listen to you rant and rave all day long because he loves your voice
When you’re stressed out he’ll cuddle you like there’s no tomorrow and help you get the best sleep in your life
Forehead kisses are this man’s favorite when cuddling.
He could be giving them or receiving them, he still enjoys it.
Whenever y’all go to sleep cuddling you wake up in some weird position together.
If you’re high and he’s not he’ll take care of you so well
He wouldn’t have a specific nickname for you, but he’d definitely call you ‘love’ most of the time
He’s taken you on a stargazing date multiple times
Something about having you lay on his chest in the quiet and looking at the stars above just calms him down and has him take things into perspective.
He absolutely ADORES you and would never do anything to hurt you on purpose
And at the end of the day, you both love each other very much.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A/n: I ran out of ideas but I hope you enjoy.

Surge? (Or Elias, if you’ve already been asked about Surge or want to double up)
Sure!
Surge:
NOTP: KitSurge (romantically) for sure. But aside from that uh. I still don't like Sonic x Surge very much. There's just other characters I think compliment Sonic more and are more fun for me to examine with him, than the girl who's been brainwashed to hate & murder him. If you like the ship that's totally fine, there's nothing wrong with it, it just does nothing for me. (Currently. never say never.)
BROTP: Surge & Kit. I know they're in an unhealthy relationship now, but I really hope it can grow to something better, I believe in them.
OTP: out of characters Surge's allowed to court, SurgeAmy & SurgeBlaze make a lot of sense. I really like the SurgeJewel stuff I've seen too. The problem is that Surge hasn't interacted with anyone outside of like Sonic, Eggman & Whisper, so there's hundreds of different ways she could interact with them and I haven't picked a favorite yet.
So in the mean time I'm holding on to the Teen-Elias x Surge ship for as long as I can lol.
2nd Choice Pairing: I've toyed with the idea of Tumble having like a one sided crush on Surge. I think it would be funny. They both have stubby tails.
I think Silver or Knuckles could also potentially have a fun chemistry with her too. (they just have to not mention that they're part of Sonic's inner circle)
Fluffy Pairing: Elias x Surge, like no contest for me
Angsty Pairing: Anyone with Surge is going to cause some angst to happen lol. The Surge & Blaze interactions I've been imagining are probably the angst-iest though.
Favorite Poly Ship: none. I think Surge would be too selfish to share.
Weirdest Pairing: I'm up for whatever as long as Surge is happy.
Elias (I'm gonna keep this as firm as I can to just Archie Elias lol)
NOTP: Just the gross ones that I don't even want to mention
BROTP: Him & Sally. I really like their relationship, I'm extremely sad that if Sally were to come back Elias can't come with her or even be alluded to.
OTP: I'm alright with him & Megan. I just wish Megan was given more of a dynamic with him than just "patient loving wife". Like give me something to work with. What are her hobbies? Where's their favorite date spot? Does Megan also have lumberjack skills? Also I think it's funny she also agreed to marry Elias soon after meeting him and losing her 1st partner, girly saw a 10 walk into town and wasted no time. Good for her.
I would say Elias & Geoffrey but every thing I've read between them they act more like ex-boyfriends without ever having the boyfriend part. There's some tension there that I can dig though.
2nd choice pairing: ....what if in Archie's universe there's a mysterious amnesiac green tenrec girl that's Elias & Megan's age and-
Angsty Pairing: (non romantic obv.) Elias & his parents...
Favorite Poly ship: Idk, Elias has enough to worry about.
Weirdest pairing: You know what, Elias & Larry Lynx. I can see it. It starts off one sided on Larry's part but the more missions the Secret Freedom Fighters go on they start to form a deep connection... (I literally just made this up just now I'm not doing this for real...I don't think..)
