Chongqing 重庆 is a direct-administered municipality in Southwestern China. It’s one of the four direct-administered municipalities, along with Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin. It is the only directly administrated municipality located deep inland.

Chongqing's topography includes mountains, rivers, forests, springs, waterfalls, gorges, and caves.

The municipality covers a large geographical area roughly the size of Austria. Chongqing has a population of 32 million, making it the most populous city proper in the world. However, this number includes its large rural population (60-70% urban and 30-40% rural)

The city served as the wartime capital for the Republic of China (ROC) during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945). Because of that, Chongqing has over 1,000 bomb shelters today. Most of which have been transformed to thriving cultural and commercial hubs.

In 1997, the current municipality was separated from the surrounding province of Sichuan.

Chongqing is located in the subtropics, situated in the area between the Sichuan Basin and on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Its climate features frequent monsoon conditions and very high humidity. With over 100 days of fog per year, the city is known as the "Fog City" 雾都.
