next in the birth chart analysis series is one of my favorite music artists, amy winehouse 🥀👩🏻‍🦱 i’ve always been fascinated with her—her life, style, and music. she’s literally everything and she was truly a unique and beautiful woman. i would like to show my appreciation for her existence and legacy by analyzing her chart ✨🖤

Amy Winehouse was a famous musician who gained popularity in 2003 from her debut album “Frank”, leading song being “Stronger Than Me”. Amy was most known for her unique soulful voice, amazing songwriting, and bass guitar skills. Winehouse was vicariously known for her sass, addictions, as well as her unhealthy relationship with her ex-husband Black Fielder-Civil. At some point, she was even considered one of the most disliked divas in the industry. Unfortunately, Amy passed away in 2011 just at 27 years old from an alcohol overdose. Her legacy lives on as she has inspired other popular artists such as Adele, Sam Smith, and Lana Del Rey. She is usually recognized by her iconic beehive hair, fabulous mole, and her eye-catching tattoos.

Backstory

Born in Nova Scotia, Canada to immigrant muggle parents, Paisley grew up in a small fishing village just on the outskirts of a port city. Because of this, she spent many days on fishing vessels with her father and older brother, while her mother worked as a teacher at the schoolhouse in town. When she was eight, her mother fell gravely ill and unfortunately passed away from complications of scarlet fever. Her father, Pierre, often struggled to balance work obligations with raising Paisley and Mathieu, and more often than not her older brother was left responsible, which caused her to develop a great deal of independence.

Being from a non-magical family, Paisley's magic was a startling discovery. It revealed itself when, while arguing with her brother, she made a milk bottle spontaneously explode in frustration. The following morning, two members from the Ministry for Magic arrived, explained magical abilities to her and her family, and promptly enrolled her in the Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

She was sorted into the Horned Serpent house, based on her high level of intelligence and ambitious, goal-oriented mindset.

Paisley excelled in her studies, her hunger for knowledge consistent, and while graduating from her fifth year she was recognized for her advanced magical comprehension. She was hand-selected by the Minster for Magic himself to take part in an accelerated graduate program at Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry, and with great excitement she transferred at the start of her sixth year. I’m trying to get up the courage to cut my own hair (to look good, not in a freak out) and it’s causing me more stress than I know how to articulate. I really wish I had someone to show me how to do this/laugh it off if it looks wonky. I don’t know how to not take it so seriously

something i noticed recently is that as marian is going about her character arc, her progress is evident thru her hair. seeing as how she starts out the film “tightly wound”, it makes sense the first time we see her in the film not only is she working (in an office, no less) but she also has a very proper bun in—

even when she shows up to sugar n’ spice she hasn’t changed out of her work gear, not even a teensy bit. she still has her blazer + her little blouse on and her hair is still very much up. even as carla tells her girl take your blouse off she’s like Um. No O_O

the only time in the first two-ish acts of the movie we see her w her hair fully down is when she has jamie over to give her frozen vegetables to put on her black eye, when the day is clearly over for her. she’s in the private space of her apartment only with jamie so obvs her hair is down. (you could also point to this as jamie being the only person marian is truly comfortable with, which i’d also wholeheartedly agree with.)

however as the two of them begin their Trek down south, her hair is still in the same very proper bun it seems she’s used to. even the night after marian is awkwardly kicked out of the hotel for jamie and her hookup to have sex, she still has that same fuckass bun when they’re getting pizza and spot the soccer girls.

but Notably the morning after jamie & marian’s First Kiss that marian scrambles away into the night from and after jamie picks her up from the police station, marian’s hair is now different! she’s in a high pony! (also interesting how jamie’s mess of curls have also been thrown into an updo here— this fit is the only time in the movie that she’s truly wearing a different hairstyle. i assume bcuz margaret was tired of the curlers, but it’s still a fun detail comparatively.)

when they arrive at the hotel, her hair is somewhat different once again! her once-high ponytail has sunk into a medium-bordering-on-low pony. it’s interesting to note because her bun in the first act never seems to come undone or slip at all, but she has loosened up to the point wherein she’s fine with letting her hair slip.

then- Of Course— when they have fancy dinner and jamie is courting her like a gentleman, her hair is fully down! she’s also in a cute dress, which seems like a far cry from the marian we met at the beginning of the movie who was pulling up to dyke bars in silly, boxy blazers. (i could probably write a separate post on the wardrobing without thinking, honestly.)

after this, her hair is only kind-of up (as is jamie’s) when they get kidnapped. for the rest of the movie, it pretty much stays down. and naturally, in the final scene we get of them, her hair is down and done-up so pretty and she’s in another cute and less formal dress. WHOA!!! CHARACTER DEVLOPMENT!!!!!

also important to note that jamie clearly has a Thing for touching/playing with marian’s hair— her pulling marian closer by a hand in marian’s thick black locks + jamie twirling marian’s silly little ponytail around (she’s stimming guys she has ADHD).

plus, of course, the very sweet moment before they have sex wherein jamie is moving locks of marian’s hair out of the way as she’s undressing her so lovingly. i love the sex scene because it’s so soft and tender and acts as a breather for both us and the characters. you can tell marian is definitely at Peak relaxation here, just letting jamie undress her and go down on her, especially when she’s soooo blissed out from her orgasm that she falls asleep immediately after. they’re such sweethearts… sniff sniff.

marian’s whole hair progression was just something i noticed at one point and i was like WAIT! that’s GENIUS. also genius in the fact that geraldine has beautiful hair and is literally a pretty pretty princess, so seeing her be at Peak Princess only really at the end of the film feels like a reward. it’s such a change regardless, but one you can clearly see is coming from marian becoming more comfortable with herself and entering a relationship with jamie, who she’s always loved, a girl who has always loved marian as she is. gahd-damn it. i love this movie.

Something of the Wolf...

The Doctor

The Doctor - the Fifth Doctor to be precise - has a canonical base outfit of cricketing garb with a camel-colored coat that has red lining and a stick of celery on the lapel. In addition to striped trousers, a cream cricket jumper with red lining, and white Cricketing Zed trainers, he also sports a white dress shirt with red question marks on the collar and usually has floral-patterned suspenders. He completes the ensemble with a soft cotton white undershirt.

In Something of the Wolf, the Doctor sometimes has variant outfits, or outfits he wears outside of his usual Cricketing garb. This is usually a simple cotton tee and loose dress shirt on top, untucked and rolled up to the elbows. He alternates between his usual suspenders and plain ones, usually wears tan jeans, and he always has his white Cricketing Zeds.

The Doctor's sleep outfit is rather plain. He has flannel and cotton pajama pants he wears, and he usually wears mismatched socks when walking around the house because he can't be bothered to pair them correctly. He wears a white cotton tee that has a Star Wars Rebel Logo on it in orange that Rose has attacked with a Sharpie to have the Seal of Rassilon and the words "Time Lord" underneath the word "Rebel" as a joke, but the Doctor absolutely loves it and insisted she buy more and do the same to them.

During the Time War, the Doctor needed a sturdier outfit for the warzones and battlefields. He changed his coat and jumper for a medium brown leather jacket with patched elbows and wears a flannel grey-brown shirt loose underneath it. A faded blue undershirt is the final upper layer. The suspenders were swapped for a simple leather belt. This is usually accompanied by red knit fingerless gloves, a purple and pale gold Patrex scarf, and a satchel that carries emergency medical supplies. He wears a white medic band of fabric on his upper left arm with the green crescent moon hospital symbol to denote his status as a Healer/Medic/Doctor. Thick tan jeans sport a leather holster on the upper right thigh that holds his Sonic in it, and he wears thick red socks with iron-tipped World War II Era English leather combat boots. During the war, an accident resulted in Rose's hair being cut very short. The Doctor cut his short as well in solidarity.

After the Time War, the Doctor felt he could go back to softer apparel. However, after the War he couldn’t go back to the way things were entirely. He grew out his hair back to its usual shaggy do, and the sturdy trousers were replaced by standard solid tan dress slacks. New Cricketing Zed trainers were added, as well as a brand new Cricket Jumper with the red stripe. Underneath, instead of a dress shirt, the Doctor sports a TARDIS Blue cashmere turtleneck sweater. The collar usually pulled up to hide a rather gruesome scar on his neck from when he was nearly beheaded on a war mission for Romana and Narvin, and there are surface level scars hidden under his layers but viewable on his hands as well as a shallow one on his right cheekbone. Completing the ensemble is a medium brown plaid coat with a white handkerchief (adorned with a red question mark) in the breast pocket with leather-patched elbows, and also features a built-in belt.

Rose

Rose usually likes to shake up her standard outfits often, but they usually maintain a typical style of a shirt or dress with a cardigan, vest, jacket, etc. She prefers to most often wear jeans or trousers, but she has been known to go for shorts, capris, skirts, and under-dress shorts. Her preferred footwear is usually a pair of Chuck Taylor Trainers in colors that vary per outfit, and she often also changes up her hairstyle.

When Rose goes to sleep, she usually goes barefoot and wears a pair of cotton sleep shorts. More often than not, she steals one of the Doctor's many various Cricket Jumpers; if it is a particularly warm evening and they are not in the TARDIS she'll go in a plain spaghetti strap tank top to stay cool, but she prefers the jumper.

During the Time War, Rose decided to go for a sturdier outfit. She usually sports her trusty TARDIS Blue leather jacket over a simple tee or tank top of varying colors, and pairs it with a pair of knit fingerless gloves and a leather belt. She also wears a matching purple and gold Patrex scarf to match the Doctor's, and a matching Medic/Healer/Doctor band of white with the green crescent moon hospital symbol on her upper left arm to indicate she is there to help. Her trousers are usually black jeans or grey ones, and she wears high iron-tipped leather boots with a leather holster attached to her right thigh that she also stores her own Sonic in. Due to a wartime accident, she had to cut her hair short.

After the Time War, Rose was able to go back to some sorter clothes but she still feels vulnerable in sweaters. Having regrown her hair by the end of the War, Rose keeps it only a little longer than shoulder length to avoid having problems with it once again and also rarely wears it loose to keep it out of harm’s way. Rose favors a pair of jean trousers with a pink belt most often, and also a jean jacket rolled up to the elbows. She wears her battle scars on her arms and hands (and the one in her left eyebrow) proudly whereas the Doctor prefers to hide his, and also wears a casual tee shirt and a pair of her trademark pink Chuck Taylor Converse.

Patrex Robes

A simple, breathable and flexible fabric, these casual everyday Patrex Chapter tunics made of the Purple and Gold Chapter colors are a modern Ardethe fashion style meant for everyday use. When the Doctor and Rose officially became part of the community, they took to wearing the style when they were out and about in Ardethe. They are viewed as their "Leisure/Lazy Sunday" clothes, and they are exceptionally comfortable.

Pulled from the depths of the TARDIS wardrobe, these highly antiquated Patrex Robes are meant for only the most formal of occasions- though the Doctor's are a tad too short for his long legs (though the hem is quickly altered to the appropriate length brushing the tops of his shoes during events in “Time in Office”). The Robes sport an underlayer, an over-layer, long sleeves, and tabards bedecked in the Patrex Chapter Colors of Purple and Gold. Rose's features a corset and high collar in a style reminiscent of Edwardian England, and the Doctor's features a somewhat armored but rather flexible leather chestplate. Modern Traditional Time Lord Robes are more complex, heavier, and sport the skull-cap helmets with the large shoulder pauldrons. One is also expected to wear gloves at all times, and they must feature the Seal of Rassilon. The antiquated robes sport none of this and are made of a light, breathable material with freedom of movement and bare hands, head, and shoulders.

Katherine 'Kadee' Silvuse von Valancius

I decided to do this since I signed up for the Rogue Trader Heart Exchange and I've not written a lot about Kadee in the WH40k setting. Or rather Owlcat's 40k setting. A lot of her lore is going to be based more on the game and the Expanse (Belters as Void Born, of course!)

Character’s full name: Katherine von Valancius (family name, Silvuse)

Reason or meaning of name: Katherine was named after St. Katherine, who was one of the shield bearers of Alicia Dominica who was the founder of the Adepta Sororitas. Katherine is a common enough name among upper and lower classes in hopes of a child ready against defend against the forces of Chaos.

Character’s nickname: Kadee (a name used by Idira and Jae in nearly all settings, informal settings with Heinrix and Cassia), Kitten (by Marazhai in whatever setting he wishes)

Reason for nickname: Katie is a common diminutive and Katherine has been called Kadee by her family and friends until becoming a Psyker and enrolling as an Officer. Kitten was swiftly granted as a nickname when Marazhai found Kadee's cats, Tiger and Void, and before he could do anything, Kadee swore she'd rip out his uthera, or whatever passes for one.

Age: Late 20s, early 30s by end of game.

How old does he/she appear: Early to mid 30s due to the stress of her life, though she does use biomancy to keep herself from aging more.

Body build: Due to the bulk of psyker gear, Kadee appears stouter than she actually is. When reduced to bare skin, she's thick but muscular, with an hourglass shape.

Distinguishing marks: Metal planting where she cracked her skull as a child along her jaw, framing her face. There are sockets that allow augments to help with her psyker abilities.

Overall attractiveness: Pretty if worn looking,  as void borns tend to be. Due to the tone of her skin, she’s sometimes mistaken for hiveworld or forgeworld born.

Personality Good personality traits: Thoughtful, presenting kindness as a kind of pragmaticism, curious, stubborn, and protective.

Bad personality traits: Vengeful, willful, and she compartmentalizes her anger far too often.

Mood character is most often in: Kadee attempts to be inspiring in public, but is often exhausted and befuddled how she found herself in this position of Rogue Trader. The push back from her kindness often puts her on edge.

Sense of humor: Kadee has a dry sense of humor, and is apt to play the 'straight man' to most people - save Heinrix. He happens to switch on her rare, more playful sense of humor.

Character’s greatest joy in life: The colors of others, finding ways to enrich her subject, floating in a hot bath (and demands it as a part of aftercare), watching nobles suffer, her cats.

Character’s greatest fear: Abandonment.

Why?: Most Psykers develop a stockholm syndrome relationship with the Imperium - between losing her parents and being raised in a Black Ship during her teenhood, being alone is something she dreads as much as she yearns for.

What single event would most throw this character’s life into complete turmoil? Inheriting a massive fortune from a psychotically rich wine aunt she’s never met, and all the baggage that comes with it. Besides that? Being getting into a toxic rivalry that might corrupt her.

But how would that happen? 

Character is most at ease when: Curled with her cats while sipping mulled fruit based 'rotgut' - anyone who thinks all rotgut is the same are all nobles. 

Most ill at ease when: Nobles. Nobility. The entire concept.

Enraged when: Wanton destruction of innocent lives for the greater good - she's a very complicated relationship with warp jumps. Marazhai pushing the boundaries as all good switches should. 

Depressed or sad when: Mistakes are made that hurt others intentionally, people dying for unworthy causes.

Priorities: Betterment for non-Chaos worshipping sentient lives living in her colonies - which is absolute heresy and she is aware of it.

Life philosophy: That freedom and searching for better solutions after millenia of agony is worth the risk.

Character’s soft spot: Cats!

Is this soft spot obvious to others? A handful; Abelard is very aware of the bothersome orange beast who runs rampant on the bridge. Cassia is delighted over meeting an actual cat and she’ll often find Void sitting in her lap when she has tea with the Lord Captain. Irdia likely encourages Tiger much to Abelard’s dismay. Pasqual finds cats bothersome. Ulfar loves Tiger matches his mane and beard while Sister Argenta enjoys petting both cats when they cross her path. Jae sneezes around them and isn’t particularly fond of them. Yrliet is absolutely puzzled by the beasts. Heinrix has developed a begrudging fondness because Kadee loves the cats so much and Marazhai is reminded, DAILY, not to hurt them and has done the calculations such pain would displease Kitten. (Tiger tends to attack Marazhai’s ponytail, Void likes sleeping in Heinrix’s coat.)

Greatest strength: Brilliant and personable in formal settings.

Greatest vulnerability or weakness: Kadee is physically frail and she secretly fights with the warp entity that possessed her in her teenhood in a remarkably mundane way. 

Biggest regret: Never telling her parents and siblings how much she loved them.

Minor regret: Katherine doesn't really try to remember the minor things.

Biggest accomplishment: Saving a Pilgrim ship when she was a teenager.

Minor accomplishment: Buying two cats. (It is a BIG deal to her.) 

Past failures he/she would be embarrassed to have people know about: Her old warp entity and the new one have had fights with each other - one kept her up for 48 hours.

Character’s darkest secret: How often and how much she enjoys hunting nobles with Marazhai.

Does anyone else know? … yes.

Goals Drives and motivations: Survival was her biggest motivation prior to becoming Rogue Trader. She did have daydreams of getting to a place where she can take care of others, but being a Psyker, she knew her options were limited.

Immediate goals: Establish herself in the Expanse and make self and productive colonies. Long term goals: Make her changes as permanent as she can.

Where did she live in childhood?: Poor on a void ship's lower decks, she was from a demolition clan. 

Most important childhood memory: How to handle with fires within the lower decks, where oxygen levels weren't always level.

Why: It was one of the first times Kadee saw crisis and a crisis that would be repeated far too often, even among the lower decks.l

The Sideburns Scheme Post #9

Crowley, Good Omens 2, Episode 1, The Arrival, fragile existence

What do we learn about the sideburns?

The sideburns are much shorter than they were before encountering Gabriel. They are also shorter than when Crowley was at the threshold of his Bentley.

However, in my opinion, the right sideburn, at least when Crowley is turning around and suggesting Dartmoor, is more like a length when he was in the park than crossing the street with Aziraphale.

The left one might actually be shorter than the right one. Additionally, the left one is more thick in hair than it usually is up to this point of the story (again, my opinion).

Is the brighter red streak visible?

The previous scene wanted us to find that streak with little to no effort. This scene wants us to struggle, really, really struggle. Most of the time, I can't find it. Even when I do, I'm hesitant to call it out. It's usually above his left eye in the story overall, and if I look on my TV or iPad instead of PC monitor, I can see it a little better, but it's like it's more saturated but not brighter. I have to look extremely hard at "What does your 'exactly' mean, exactly?" and there are still parts on the right side of his that also look brighter, more saturated, and like streaks. That part of the above images has more increased brightness than the others.

The lighting and saturation of the scene seem to want to draw us in to those more saturated parts on the right area of his head, to the side and above. I've made the indicators as best I can.

This scene seems to have the right side of his head as being the intended lighter side, rather than left one as we've been seeing.

I definitely cannot find these types of streaks right before Crowley leaves the room. "You're on your own with this one." That's an angle where it can usually be found.

Is the hairstyle different from the present day Crowley scene before it?

Yes. The sideburns are shorter and instead of a tidy collected swoop, he has curls going up from his forehead that actually change how they curl during this scene itself.

I think this scene is actually two to three scenes (different timelines, memories, realities, iterations, whatever) in one and/or the story is telling us that the more Crowley moves in this given smaller space with Aziraphale, the more erratic the top hair will act, especially because he is as stressed as he is here.

After closely studying this stuff, I am reasonably sure the shifts in hair are about his mood, not a different timelines, realities, iterations, or whatever.

Now, to go over the differences I see.

When Crowley closes the door, his hair has two visibly thicker curls going down, then curving up toward his left back inward, ending either in the center above his left eye.

When Crowley is thinking they "just take him somewhere and leave him there", the curls go up and out from the center creating a V-like shape.

When Crowley is talking about "exactlys", the curling of his hair above his right eye is going up in and back, much like the hair more centered and above his left eye, instead of parting away from the center of his forehead like the description above. It has a stronger resemblance to the style when he encountered Gabriel than the other styles in this scene.

Additional Notes:

Crowley is only in this room twice during the season and with Aziraphale both times. It is the most private space we see for the two of them. His sideburns are well, relatively short both times. I think if someone is trying to define them as "short, medium, or long," they are at the short/medium border or type of area.

As I've said, I'm finding it better to compare to other scenes to get a feel for what is going on. Plus, what is up with the left one seeming to fill in with more hair? What does that mean?

We'll go over the other time they are in this room later.

If we are in a warped timeline, Crowley gestures a "1" when pointing to the door, presumably meaning Gabriel out there. It could have a double meaning, that this scene, or that part of the scene, is in the first iteration or a sort of highest rank main story before any edits take place...or something else I'm not getting of course.

As I'm realizing was the standard for the season, we have that weird blocking and blurring happening here.

If you look closely, there are a few frames where Crowley seems to get lightning imprints on his forehead that foreshadow the upcoming lightning scene. Aziraphale might actually see them too. I thought at first that Aziraphale might actually be noticing the hair and not comment, but by now, here in my latest edit, I think Aziraphale already understands, on some level, something about the sideburns. For these parts in this scene, Aziraphale might be reacting more to the lightning imprints.

Here is a picture. I've indicated these imprints in red rectangles instead of white since his lightning will be red.

When Crowley walks past Aziraphale to start to leave, we are treated to a new sound effect for Crowley. It's like a hiss but not the same type of hiss or only part of the hiss for a miracle sound.

When Crowley says "fragile existence," please understand, I think he truly he means it. He is taking specific actions to manage his space among humans as a former demon with how and when he moves. We are going to see this fragility even more when he is in Hell.

Oct-Nov '24 Braids:

First post on the new Tumblr. I'm going to be structuring my posts around my hairstyles so they'll either have to do with a style I would like to do or am currently doing, or have just recently finished. Hopefully it makes more sense as you continue reading (if He wills it). So without further ado, here are Spiders and Orchids on my head :):

I learned how to braid my hair in 2018 while I was in college because it was too expensive to keep trying to get it done, especially because I love getting new styles. It was slow work at first ( + deeply humbling to move through the world with only your wits and the 26 braids you managed to put on your head) and will try to find some pics from that time. It's taken a while since then but I'm better with the more technical side of braiding which includes constantly remapping a grid pattern the geometry of my head will accept (it is constantly changing), standardizing the size of my braids, bending my knee and bowing my head to Color Theory, and getting better at noticing with my hands.

SWBAT ('student' will be able to):

The esoteric goal of this hairstyle was to capture three things that terrify me and do a bit of 'exposure therapy' through my first favorite medium (hair). I chose spiders, orchids, and Mitski's "Bug like an Angel" [Specifically the line 'Well, when you break them, they break you right back.' ]

The technical goals I used to integrate those esoteric learnings into a material medium: Small Individual braids, Intentional Grid Design (esp. for the back of my head), Color Matching/Being playful with color

The Overall End Goal was to have a more literal command over things that scare me on an existential level. Not to do away wholly the fear, but to invite it to play a better role in my day to day. Spiders used to scare me because of the Legs and the vague notion that it will not be a man at the end of time, but a spider. Anansi the Spider stories also did their Big One on me before I ever had a chance to fight back. I find them beautiful and they used to scare me because I felt as though they might use that against me given the chance (I actually kinda look for them now because when I kill a fly in my room, I don't want to waste its life with a trash bin). Orchids were scary to me because of their fickleness. It was scary to think something might take such careful work to become beautiful only to die under very mundane circumstances. And I don't think I need to explain the knife that is Bug Like an Angel and broken promises.

The Process:

Start: Sept. 23. 2024 to End: Oct. 19. 2024

Started on my hair about four days after I took it down from my last style. I like to do my take down and clarifier wash back to back, then let my hair rest. I'm currently deeply jobless so that is easy to let happen, but in the past I had gotten used to squeezing braiding into a three day process. This style took a lot longer than what has now become more normal for me (four- five day process bc I honor my rest now) because I got a tooth infection that needed antibiotics and a lot more stuff got in my way. In true esoteric fashion, the style came- as within- so without + as in you, so in me. I had to confront all those fears in my own real life before I could finish the hair style and really lay them to rest.

Clarifier Wash: Washed my hair twice with Dawn Dish Soap and did an Aztec Clay mask (Clay, honey, ACV, grapeseed and avocado oil). My last set of braids were also tiny, and I've noticed that I find the extra small braids to be better for promoting thickness in my hair (my hair is naturally on the finer side). Not sure if that is actually true- just something I noticed to seem true for me. Anyway, those tiny braids tend to collect dirt way easier and I used Blue Magic which also attracts a bit more misc. lint to my hair so the double wash of dawn was more than necessary to really clean my scalp which almost sputtered an inhale at the end of wash day. I've decided to only use blue magic when my do is closer to its demise and switch my normal shampoo for something a little stronger so it gets through the braids on wash days.

Materials for Braids: Some left over red, rust brown, and platinum blonde. And my hairs natural black color (I DID bleach my hairline in June which has helped me Lock In color theory wise). I would give the hair color numbers but these packs had been switched from their original packagings and kept in my closet for a year so I just don't really know. I used this same red last year all over my head, and the brown too. The blonde came from earlier this year from a previous style. Again, deeply jobless so I really tried to use what I have laying around and rely more on the grid pattern and length to offset the lack of cohesion in terms of color. I really liked the idea of making it look a little gory in the way of 'blood, fat, and marrow' to better capture the feeling of fear that spiders specifically evoke in me. That feeling that you will be consumed, past flesh- bones and all.

Materials Con't: Rubber bands, rat tail combs, brush, blowdryer, hair bands, beeswax edge control, duckbill clips, a great and faithful bonnet, two handheld mirrors and a large room mirror. Mango butter, vanilla oil stuff, and grapeseed oil in the water I used to set the braids at the end for a nice smell :).

Process:

This is where I have to pretend the process was not as bad as it actually was lmao. The physical act of braiding is tiring, I wasn't feeling well (emotionally or physically), and it was so much work for the pay out to just be having my hair done. There are a couple places where I really compromised with myself and didn't mind the parting too much but because I was really exacting with the bigger shapes I was unwilling to change.

What I really enjoyed (near the end) was becoming more spider in my weavings as the foundation was laid out, I got more playful with how much blonde and red I would incorporate into one braid and the braids were pretty long too before I set them. While I was braiding I thought the most obvious idea would be to keep them down my back and to my ass and really lean into the "ghastly" energy of these colors. So I braided each braid down to the end, only to chop it off after setting them because what I learned about fear was that it's important to keep only enough.
