Scientists have discovered cannabidiol, a compound in cannabis known as CBD, in a common Brazilian plant, opening potential new avenues to produce the increasingly popular substance. The team found CBD in the fruits and flowers of a plant known as Trema micrantha blume, a shrub which grows across much of the South American country and is often considered a weed, molecular biologist Rodrigo Moura Neto of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro told AFP in June 2023. CBD, increasingly used by some to treat conditions including epilepsy, chronic pain and anxiety, is one of the main active compounds in cannabis, along with tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC â the substance that makes users feel high. The compound's effectiveness as a medical treatment is still under research.

đŠ - Who knew Attenborough's echidna was just camera-shy?
1. New state law prevents animal abuse offenders from owning pets
The law bans those convicted of animal cruelty, including those involved with dogfighting, from owning any kind of animal for five years after their first criminal offense.
2. A door at a Swedish library was accidentally left open â 446 people came in, borrowed 245 books. Every single one was returned
The library was supposed to be closed for All Saints Day â a celebration sometimes also called All Hallows Day, the precursor of Halloween. But the library staff had forgotten to close a door. So people came in, thinking the library was open. Some visitors realized the library was technically closed and went home, but others did not.
3. Ohio votes to legalize marijuana for adult recreational use, becoming 24th state to do so
Ohio voters approved a measure legalizing recreational marijuana on Tuesday, defying Republican legislative leaders who had failed to pass the proposed law.
Passage of Issue 2 makes Ohio the 24th state to allow adult cannabis use for non-medical purposes.
4. First ever images prove 'lost echidna' not extinct
Scientists have filmed an ancient egg-laying mammal named after Sir David Attenborough for the first time, proving it isn't extinct as was feared.
An expedition to Indonesia led by Oxford University researchers recorded four three-second clips of Attenborough's long-beaked echidna. Spiky, furry and with a beak, echidnas have been called "living fossils".
They are thought to have emerged about 200 million years ago, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth.
5. Dog leads family to missing cat that fell into 30-metre mineshaft
An incredibly lucky cat has his canine companion to thank for saving his life after the dog led rescuers to a 30 metre-deep mineshaft the cat fell into.
The cat, Mowgli, disappeared on Oct. 20 and had been missing for six days. Owner Michele Rose told the BBC that she had âalmost given up hopeâ of finding her cat.
6. Worldâs first whole eye and partial face transplant gives Arkansas man new hope
A surgical team at NYU Langone Health in New York has performed the worldâs first successful whole-eye transplant in a living person: Aaron James.
After an accident at work led to the loss of his left eye and part of his face, Aaron was given a new window to his soul, as well as a partial face transplant.
7. Obesity drug Wegovy cut risk of serious heart problems by 20%, study finds
The popular weight-loss drug Wegovy reduced the risk of serious heart problems by 20% in a large, international study that experts say could change the way doctors treat certain heart patients.
The research is the first to document that an obesity medication can not only pare pounds, but also safely prevent a heart attack, stroke or a heart-related death in people who already have heart disease â but not diabetes.

2024 US Election Information
We have roughly 1 year until the 2024 US election. I've put in some research, and here are my conclusions.
TLDR for those of you who don't have time or focus: Cornel West (Democratic Socialist running as People's Party -> Green Party) is the ideal candidate to vote for - normally I wouldn't advocate voting third party, but we may actually have a shot for once, and he has excellent policies. Jill Stein (Green Party) is a potential backup, though if West drops out, our best option for Democratic party is Marianne Williamson.
Please spread this information, especially to residents of Texas, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, Wisconsin, and Nevada. Detailed information under the cut.
Current Fascist and Republican Candidates
Donald Trump, Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy, Asa Hutchinson, Tim Scott, Ron DeSantis, Chris Christie, Ryan Binkley, and Doug Burgum.
I'm not going to entertain their details, but I will note that the information I picked up while being exposed to alt-right communities from the inside via my fascist parents earlier this year shows strong evidence that Republicans are likely going to split between Donald Trump, Ron DeSantis (viewed as a betrayal by Trump supporters), and openly fascist Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. (I'll cover him later).
My guess is a 6/3/1 Republican vote split between Trump/DeSantis/Kennedy, Jr..
Current Democratic Candidates
Joe Biden, Marianne Williamson, and Dean Philips.
Biden has overall failed to complete the majority of his campaign promises, and has been directly supporting Israel during the genocide of Palestine, as well as deferring to Republicans to be "bipartisan" (I don't think I have to stress enough that a bipartisan democrat is not a democrat) - do not vote for him.
Williamson is a high-school educated 71-year-old author from Los Angeles, California. She is known for being Oprah Winfrey's, "spiritual advisor," (double red flag), and dropped out during the 2020 election (another red flag).
While she supports the reinstatement of Roe v. Wade, the decriminalization of cannabis and psychedelic drugs, the reduction of CO2, and moving to 100% renewable energy by 2035, her advocacy for the outright banning of assault and semi-assault weapons for civilians without military reform of the same is a slight red flag when combined with her relationship with Oprah Winfrey (an Obama supporter, the president who authorized quite a lot of drone strikes in West Asia) and drop-out makes her not a great candidate.
Philips is a Bachelor's (Brown University) and Master's Business (University of Minnesota) educated 54-year-old three-term congressman who is noted for criticizing Biden running for a second term on account of both political moderacy and medical concerns.
Philips unfortunately wants to increase police funding for some reason, but advocated for better training, including mental health training. He also advocates for what he calls, "comprehensive immigration reform," in the form of increased border security and streamlining legal entry (this ignores the problem outlined by the UN that people seeking asylum are likely to have to enter a country illegally before they can seek support), and the only real good stance he has is giving reproductive rights to patients, rather than politicians.
Philips is essentially a moderate Republican, and is a bad candidate. Do not vote for him.
Current Independent Candidates
Fascist (not his stated political stance, but it's what he is)
Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is a fascist that has openly quoted Nazi propaganda in his political campaigns, is an anti-vaccine activist, and has spread anti-science conspiracy theories such as vaccines causing autism and the non-existence of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. I cannot stress this enough, do not fucking vote for Kennedy, Jr.
Democratic Socialist
Cornel West is a Bachelor's (Harvard University), Master's, and Ph.D. (both Princeton University) educated 70-year-old progressive activist that switched his running party from the People's Party to the Green Party, despite being a both public- and self-described democratic socialist.
When asked why he wasn't running as a Democrat against Biden, he stated that, "Neither party is speaking to the pressing needs of poor and working people."
His party plans are a wealth tax on the rich, a national $27 minimum wage, a federal Universal Basic Income, 6 months of paid family leave, a 4-day work week, national free Pre-K childcare, "Immediate cessation of all oil and gas leasing projects on federal lands and waters," "Federal moratorium on fracking, carbon capture, and direct air capture technologies, geoengineering, and other false climate solutions," putting abortion rights in the Constitution, and nationalized healthcare.
Here's where I want to lay out something important. I normally wouldn't advocate for voting for a third party candidate due to the Spoiler Effect, but
Considering the United States' Democratic majority, popular vote records showing a common Republican minority, the absolutely incredible policies West stands for,
The growing support for third parties in the United States, and his policies aligning with public opinion,
Cornel West is the ideal candidate to vote for. Spread this information like wildfire - we may have one shot at the first third party win in US history in the upcoming 2024 election, and
If successful the dominant parties will be Fascist vs. Socialist, denying most, if not all, future Republican wins.
Our target toss-up states are Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, Wisconsin, and Nevada.
Converting Texas to third party, or even just Democrat, will throw the Republican vote entirely and all but guarantee a Democrat, or hopefully third party, 2024 election win,
Which is absolutely possible, as Texas is majority Democrat and wins Republican votes via gerrymandering despite public opinion, which is why it swings occasionally.
Democrat states also need to be switched to majority third party votes, with particular emphasis on California, New York, and Illinois.
GET PEOPLE TO VOTE FOR CORNEL WEST!
Reference map of polling for the future 2024 election:
Libertarian (slightly Conservative to alt-right, really depends on the person)
Chase Oliver is a surprisingly progressive high school educated 38-year-old anti-war Libertarian that left the Democratic party after witnessing Obama's aggressive anti-West Asian war policies who has expressed desires for criminal justice reform and ending wars abroad, though hasn't elaborated on either.
Green Party
Jill Stein is a Bachelor's (Harvard University) and Medical (Harvard Medical University) 73-year-old Jewish doctor who previously ran for and represented the Green-Rainbow Party as the governor of Massachusetts.
Stein is notable for being an activist and protestor who has both protested outside buildings and testified before legislative and other government bodies against coal plants, mercury leaks, and unclean and unsafe groundwater.
Presumably, her stances will focus on environmental protections, trans rights, and Jewish protections, making her a potential alternative should West drop out.
Conclusions:
Again, don't fucking vote for Trump, Haley, Ramaswamy, Hutchinson, Scott, DeSantis, Christie, Binkley, Burgum, Biden, Philips, or Kennedy, Jr..
Our potential backup Democratic candidate is Williamson.
The ideal candidate is West, with Stein as a viable backup.
As absurd as it sounds, I want you to vote third party for Cornel West.
If you want a wealth tax on the rich, a national $27 minimum wage, a federal Universal Basic Income,
6 months of paid family leave, a 4-day work week, national free Pre-K childcare,
"Immediate cessation of all oil and gas leasing projects on federal lands and waters," "Federal moratorium on fracking, carbon capture, and direct air capture technologies, geoengineering, and other false climate solutions,"
putting abortion rights in the Constitution, and nationalized healthcare,
VOTE FOR CORNEL WEST AND GET OTHER PEOPLE TO DO THE SAME.
WE HAVE A CHANCE AT THE FIRST THIRD PARTY WIN IN THE UNITED STATES AND THE DENIAL OF FUTURE REPUBLICAN WINS.

⥠- Charging Towards a More Electrifying Future
1. The Kissimmee River has been brought back to lifeâand wildlife is thriving
The Kissimmee River in Florida was straightened in the 1960s, causing a sharp decline in wildlife and ecological problems. But in the 1990s, a $1 billion restoration project was initiated to restore the river's natural state.
Today, nearly half of the river has been restored, wetlands have been reestablished and rehydrated, and wildlife has returned, including rare and threatened species. Already the biological impact of the project has become clear. As the wetlands have come back, so have the birds.
2. Plastic wrap made from seaweed withstands heat and is compostable
A cling film made from an invasive seaweed can withstand high temperatures yet is still easily compostable. The material could eventually become a sustainable choice for food packaging.
Scientists started with a brown seaweed called sargassum. Sargassum contains long, chain-like molecules similar to those that make up conventional plastic, which made it a good raw material. The researchers mixed it with some acids and salts to get a solution full of these molecules, then blended in chemicals that thickened it and made it more flexible and pliable.
3. An Eagle Who Adopted a Rock Becomes a Real Dad to Orphaned Eaglet
Murphy, a bald eagle that had been showing fatherly instincts, has been sharing an enclosure with an eaglet that survived a fall from a tree during a storm in Ste. Genevieve. Murphy, his rock gone by then, took his role as foster parent seriously. He soon began responding to the chickâs peeps, and protecting it.
And when, as a test, the keepers placed two plates of food in front of the birds â one containing food cut into pieces that the chick could eat by itself, and another with a whole fish that only Murphy could handle â the older bird tore up the fish and fed it to the eaglet.
4. World's largest battery maker announces major breakthrough in energy density
In one of the most significant battery breakthroughs in recent years, the worldâs largest battery manufacturer CATL has announced a new âcondensedâ battery with 500 Wh/kg which it says will go into mass production this year.
âThe launch of condensed batteries will usher in an era of universal electrification of sea, land and air transportation, open up more possibilities of the development of the industry, and promote the achieving of the global carbon neutrality goals at an earlier date,â the company said in a presentation at Auto Shanghai on Thursday.
This could be huge. Electric jets and cargo ships become very possible at this point.
5. Cat with '100% fatal' feline coronavirus saved by human Covid-19 medicine
A beloved household cat has made an âastonishingâ recovery from a usually fatal illness, thanks to a drug made to treat Covid-19 in humans â and a quick-thinking vet.
Anyaâ, the 7-year-old birman cat, was suffering from feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a â100% fatalâ viral infection caused by feline coronavirus. That was, until Auckland vet Dr Habin Choiâ intervened, giving Anya an antiviral used to treat Covid-19 called molnupiravir.
6. Kelp forests capture nearly 5 million tonnes of CO2 annually
Kelp forests provide an estimated value of $500 billion to the world and capture 4.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from seawater each year. Most of kelpâs economic benefits come from creating habitat for fish and by sequestering nitrogen and phosphorus.
7. Medical Marijuana Improved Parkinsonâs Disease Symptoms in 87% of Patients
Medical cannabis (MC) has recently garnered interest as a potential treatment for neurologic diseases, including Parkinson's disease (PD). 87% of patients were noted to exhibit an improvement in any PD symptom after starting medical cannabis. Symptoms with the highest incidence of improvement included cramping/dystonia, pain, spasticity, lack of appetite, dyskinesia, and tremor.

For 5 months my fiancé endured a rapidly progressing case of gastroparesis with a seemingly unknown cause, 7 different doctors, including 2 specialists hardly did anything to help him, both specialists and all but 1 of the general practitioners were fully convinced after he mentioned he consumed cannabis that he had cannibanoid hyperemesis syndrome, despite none of his symptoms lining up with the disorder and despite them not investigating ANY other possibilities including investigating the medications he was taking. (Additionally for him to develop CHS with the concentration and amount of weed he consumed would have been extraordinarily odd because he only smokes low THC plain flower and in very small amounts, he doesn't ever consume concentrates). Visit after visit he became worse and worse quickly losing his ability to consume any food or liquids, he became severely malnourished and dehydrated, threw up every single time he would eat or drink, experienced severe abdominal pain and bloating, rapid weight loss without trying among many other obvious signs of gastroparesis.
On his final trip to the ER after going several times for his worsening symptoms he encountered one of the worst doctors in our local hospital who is well known for blatantly mistreating and hating queer, disabled and mentally ill folks. My fiancé went in, desperate for help, after he reached the point of not being able to consume a single bite of food without it coming right back up. When explaining his symptoms to the doctor he made the mistake of mentioning that his deteriorating physical health was causing him to experience passing suicidal ideation. This is NOT cause for involuntary admission to the psych ward in any scenario. The doctor turned to him, his face contorted and red with rage and said, and I quote,"Oh so you want to pull the suicide card with me huh? Well I'll just have to lock you up in psych for that." Despite my fiancé explaining that he had no active plans or intentions and was simply experiencing extreme levels of distress and hopelessness due to his inability to eat or drink. When my fiancé inquired about whether or not his stomach issues would be investigated while he was locked up against his will, the doctor expressly said NO, we will not. The doctor left the room briefly and when he returned my fiancé bravely asked if he would follow through with what was an obvious threat and abuse of power (not how he worded it in the moment). The doctor would go on to say,"No, not this time (because legally he had no right to admit him against his will according to Canadian law) but don't you EVER pull the suicide card with me EVER again". This is coming from a medical professional working in an emergency room.
My partner has endured severe mistreatment due to his mental illnesses in our local psych ward and being threatened this way was extremely distressing and left him feeling even more hopeless than he ever did before. The doctor let him go home but did 0 investigation into his issue and all he could do was go home and have a complete mental breakdown. Every single doctor acted like he couldn't possibly have anything but cannibanoid hyperemesis syndrome and forced him to take matters into his own hands.
After barely a week of research my fiancé discovered that 2 of the medications he was taking were WELL DOCUMENTED to cause gastroparesis and not a single doctor looked at his medications or considered that they might be the cause. One of the medications he had been on for over a year and had had no issues with it before this, and additionally he could not come off of it without monitoring from his psychiatrist. However, the second medication he realized he had started taking very close to the time that his symptoms began, it was a tricyclic antidepressant that was prescribed off-label (by a specialist) for migraine prevention and it hadn't been working to stop his migraines for a while, and so out of desperation he consulted with his pharmacist and got the go-ahead to stop taking it to see if it would relieve any of his symptoms.
Low and behold, only 2 DAYS LATER, his symptoms were COMPLETELY resolved. He was able to eat and drink again as if nothing happened. It was no coincidence and it was deadly clear that this medication was the direct cause of his symptoms.
While we felt relief that the fix was so simple in the end, we also found ourselves consumed with anger and grief at the fact that no doctor even suggested that this medication could be the cause, despite it coming up on every list on every website he visited regarding gastroparesis and what can cause it. The ER doctors especially treated him with no dignity or humanity and acted like he was just some insane mentally ill person who was trying to abuse the system.
This piece is obviously a vent regarding this situation and how it felt like we had to literally fight off doctors who saw a mentally ill, disabled and visibly queer addict and decided that he was not worth their time or effort when he came to them with a physical health issue that was slowly killing him.
The Canadian healthcare system is a joke especially for those with mental illnesses and disabilities and if anyone tries to say otherwise they're dead fucking wrong.
