Causes of Gallstones in Adults: Risk Factors
Have you ever wondered why a tiny, pebble-like structure within your body can cause so much pain and discomfort? Gallstones, the silent saboteurs of your digestive system, affect millions of adults worldwide. These mysterious, yet common formations in the gallbladder can lead to excruciating pain and potentially life-threatening complications. But what exactly causes these gallstones to form? Join us on a journey as we unravel the risk factors that underlie this medical enigma, exploring the triggers that transform your gallbladder into a battleground.
What are gallstones, and why do they form?
Before we delve into the causes of gallstones, let’s briefly understand what they are. Gallstones are hardened deposits that form in the gallbladder, a small organ located beneath the liver. The gallbladder stores bile, a digestive fluid that aids in the breakdown of fats. Gallstones can vary in size, from tiny grains of sand to large pebbles, and they can obstruct the bile ducts, causing severe pain and complications.
Diet: The Culprit
One of the primary factors contributing to the formation of gallstones is diet. A diet high in saturated fats and cholesterol increases the cholesterol content in your bile, making it more prone to forming stones. If your diet is rich in processed foods, sugary drinks, and unhealthy fats, you might be unknowingly nurturing these painful pebbles within your gallbladder.
Weight and Obesity
The link between obesity and gallstones is well-established. Being overweight, especially in middle age, puts extra pressure on the gallbladder, leading to its reduced efficiency. Additionally, obesity increases cholesterol levels in the bile, which is a key ingredient in gallstone formation.
Sedentary Lifestyle
If you lead a sedentary lifestyle, you are more likely to develop gallstones. Regular physical activity helps maintain a healthy weight and ensures the proper functioning of the gallbladder. Exercise also aids in digestion and the prevention of cholesterol build-up.
Rapid Weight Loss
Crash diets or rapid weight loss programs can be a double-edged sword. While shedding excess pounds is beneficial, losing weight too quickly can actually trigger gallstone formation. When the body metabolizes fat rapidly, it releases more cholesterol into the bile, promoting gallstone development.
Age and Gender
Age and gender play a significant role in gallstone development. Women are more prone to gallstones, particularly during pregnancy, due to hormonal changes. As you age, your gallbladder’s ability to efficiently empty bile decreases, making gallstones more likely to form in older adults.
Genetics
If gallstones run in your family, your risk of developing them is higher. Genetic factors can influence how your body processes cholesterol and bilirubin, both of which are essential components of bile. Understanding your family’s medical history can help you manage your own risk.
Medical Conditions
Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes and liver disease, increase your risk of gallstones. These conditions alter the composition of bile and impair its flow, making the gallbladder more susceptible to stone formation.
Medications
Some medications, particularly those that lower cholesterol or reduce blood flow to the liver, can increase the likelihood of gallstones. If you’re on long-term medication, consult your healthcare provider to monitor your gallbladder health.

In conclusion, gallstones may be common, but they need not be a constant threat. By understanding the causes and risk factors, you can take proactive steps to maintain your gallbladder’s health and consider holistic approaches like those offered by VedikRoots Ayurveda for a well-rounded wellness strategy.

My kid asked me to explain blood types to her today, which made me remember the odd little fact that in the character profiles that appeared at the ends of the earliest Bleach volumes, there are blood types listed for the human characters, but not for the shinigami characters. Shinigami obviously have blood, we've all seen it, we've seen so much of it, honestly, but is it like blood blood? Is blood transfusion a thing they do?
I did not have any particular recollection of anyone ever receiving a blood transfusion in Bleach, but I looked up all the hospital scenes I could think of off the top of my head. Both Byakuya nor Hinamori have sort of a notable absence of things sticking out of them. I'm no expert and I don't even particular like doctor shows, but this is a situation where I would expect both of them to have IVs for hydration, if nothing else. Hinamori's got a respirator and some mysterious carts off to her far side, at least, and maybe Byakuya's just far enough on the upswing that he doesn't need it anymore.
Next shot was the famous Rukia and Renji sharing a hospital room scene.
Renji's respirator goes...under his blanket? Is this right? This doesn't seem right. Rukia doesn't seem particularly attached to anything, although there's kind of a bundle of wires? tubes? coming out of her right shoulder area. You can see them better in this shot:
That sure doesn't look like medical grade tubing, the lower one looks kinda like Hihiou Zabimaru, tbh. IVs usually work by gravity, no? Also those tubes are way too big to be going into someone's veins.
Finally, here's Kira, getting his dubious Squad 12 medical procedure.
More shady, giant, intestine-ass looking tubes that... go into him? wtf. They're attached to a computer. Maybe these are data cables?
The upshot of all of this is that I don't think shinigami have blood transfusions. I can't imagine that they don't know about them, so I imagine it's more of a case of their blood is just part of their soul, like, all of them is just soul all the way down, and it would be nearly impossible to accept a transfusion that was made of someone else's soul (soulmate-enjoying fanfic writers, take note). They do like sticking tubes in people, tho.
This sucks because when I was originally thinking about this, of course I was thinking about all the blood Renji has in his body and whether or not he's a universal donor, because, frankly, if he is, I think they would have a special framed painting of him at Squad 4 and let him have as much donuts and apple juice as he wants.
I think the main reason manga list characters' bloodtypes anyway is because Japanese people use it as a personality test, similar to horoscopes. For the record, here are the characters whose blood types we know:
Ichigo - AO Orihime - BO Chad - AO Tatsuki - AO Isshin - AB Uryuu - AB Don Kanonji (????) - BO
When I was trying to look up what they meant, I found this hilarious graphic, thank you verywellmind dot com
Looks to me like these blood types were definitely chosen to tie into personality at least to some degree (I'm not sure about Isshin, but he probably has fake Urahara Shouten-brand gigai blood-substitute anyway, so I am choosing not to read too deeply into that). Anyway, along those lines, judging from this chart, if we wanted to bootstrap Renji's blood type from his personality, I think he would, in fact, clearly fit into the idiot-on-a-skateboard quadrant. So he is a universal donor! (or at least he would be, if he were filled with blood instead of high-concentration ghost juice.)
#bleach worldbuilding#tw: medical#rukia feels like an AB to me??#i welcome the insight of people who are more medically literate than me#but i actually have a blood phobia which is why i didn't do very much research into that side of this post

i had a dental cleaning today. my dental hygienist is super friendly, my age, has a husband and a baby, very bright. we get along really well and chat a lot. we got to the topic of hanging out with friends and i told her i had joined a feminist discord and met up whenever i could with a great group of women and how good it’s been for me. she then lowers her voice and says, “ok, i don’t usually get into morality and beliefs and stuff with people, cuz i usually don’t like to, but since you said you’re in a feminist group—” and my ears of course perked up. bc, i mean. anything could be coming after that prefix.
and she continues, “have you noticed, that, like, many major women’s positions and awards are going to, like… trans women?” and what ensued was an incredibly insightful conversation with her about how concerned she is for how women are being treated. i reassured her that she’s not imagining things, that there is a very definite disparity here that is seeking to silence women and instill fear in us for questioning the very real imbalance. she exhaled and went, “oh thank god! i didn’t know if i was being, like, offensive or something.”
and we talked at length about it, and even though she claimed she was not well-read on the subject material, her observations were right on the ball.
anyway. my point here is that i got the impression that this woman has been dying to talk about this with someone. she had so much to say, and it just all came spilling out in a huge tide. it took us an HOUR to get through what should’ve been a 20-minute dental cleaning.
she is a very “normie” woman who expressed a lot of fear around asking questions. and it just amazed me that she waited until she heard the sleeper agent activation word from me, “feminist,” to know she was safe to talk about it.
and i don’t really know what i mean to say here but it just gave me both sadness and hope all at once. sadness that she thought she wasn’t entitled to her observations, but hope that women all over are waking up to this and WANT very much to talk about it with each other.
this woman is someone i see all of twice a year by appointment only. but she WANTED to bring this up. she WANTED to be heard. it was just a really amazing moment to watch her speak up and find her footing strengthening as she went on.
it gives me encouragement to start emphasizing key words a bit more overtly, like “feminist,” or “women’s issues,” in everyday convo with other women. making sure that door is open for communication is so much more effective than i ever could’ve imagined, bc this is not the first time this has happened. women everywhere want to speak. i hope i get to greet and hear as many of them as possible.
#my fave part was that she was so encouraged that she went on to speak abt medical misogyny with no prompting from me#she had SO many amazing insights about pain management in her field based on sex#i learned so much#seriously i could cry it was such an amazing convo

why kf and not lolcow, if i may ask? Simply a matter of personal preference? or perhaps you're willing to share some more thoughts on that? Always curious to hear your opinions and explanations
respect 4 LC but I've never been really into imageboard-format sites
#i dont think theyre really comparable#ive spent brief amount of time browsing lc and /lgbt (years ago) but since threads get locked and archived so fast its just boring#prefer a long scroll through a 500 page thread solely focused on factually documenting a womans journey to dig a hole straight thru her leg#& I enjoy that consistent and reputable farmers known for being in the medical field offer their insight or sometimes even insider knowledge#I really just use it to check on a few threads. but sometimes I'll check something out if I see that the OP is written by katefarmsshill#bc i really enjoy her writing#so no i dont have any reason to diss LC its great for rapidfire anonymous opinion sharing#but i never got into it so i dont have a solid grasp of the culture overall

im still thinking about this one guy in my medical anthropology elective idk why his comment pissed me off so much but i haven't been able to get it off my mind.
we were having a general discussion about the intersection between healthcare and politics, who gets to be sick, who gets to be treated and who will never be either and this guy said something like "disease affects people regardless of their socioeconomic status. covid didn't exclude the rich for example" ... how can u be this fucking obtuse as a young adult i don't get it
#i think what set me off is that a lot of people (immigrants) shared stories of their homelands that were absolutely decimated#and how much harder it is to access basic medical care there. syrians palestinians iraqis egyptians yemenis afghans libyans#and this khaleeji guy's response to detailed descriptive insight of inequity in healthcare is “disease is the great equalizer”#genuinely wonder how privileged do you have to be your whole life to even say a sentence like that after all you've heard#insufferable#🩺

saw someone make a post about how farleigh really liked oliver's hard work and attention to detail, as is alluded to in the fuck-marry-kill/karaoke scene, and that's why farleigh picked at him. i think this applies to elspeth too. in the first time we see them talk alone, when they discuss pamela, she remarks, "thank god you're so perceptive," after he notes that some of pamela's story didn't line up. this is just interesting to me. all of the residents of saltburn loved the show that oliver put on, and the well crafted story. the work, the attention to detail. which makes oliver's remark to felix about his "performance not being good enough" all the more tragic.
#theo.txt#saltburn#i thought of the last line as i was writing the post#this movie has my brain cogs whirring at ungodly speeds#the point of this was people were saying farleigh loved oliver's almost medical attention to detail but elspeth was just as enraptured by i#and felix loved the show he put on too. but with felix it was different.#and that's fucked up. to me#this is not groundbreaking insight i'm just gnawing at the bars of my enclosure

Rewatched Eddie Begins yesterday and at the start his mom is talking about how Ramon was out of town for each of the kids, and how Adriana had been an emergency C-section. In the retirement party episode the story about little Eddie crashing the truck when his mom went into labor was also Adriana. So Eddie was alone and scared and his mom was in emergency surgery and when his dad finally showed up he needed comfort and got yelled at instead.....
#and like maybe this is insight as to why ramon was upset the truck. he was Actually upset about his wife and that emotion boiled over and#hit the nearest target#which is a thing that happens we're all only human your parents are human too#but damn. poor eddie#:(#and like thats a fascinating formative trauma for him i bet it subconsciously informed his decision to flee when Shannon got pregnant#and again when their child needed medical attention#the safety line as hes lowered into the well is an umbilical cord i get it i get it#cutting the cord for chris cutting the line#its all this it's all about this its fatherhood all the way down#............................... so it is very interesting that we know he immediately makes buck legally a father after this#eddie diaz#man that you are

The Black Room (1982)

Having complicated emotions about my possible neurodivergency again
I just wish I could at least get tested to see if I have ADHD because I just want to know if my years of research and analyzing my brain means anything. Because I don’t want to self diagnose. But I just know something is up with my brain and I don’t know what it is
If I don’t get a diagnosis, then I’ll never know and I’ll never get the resources I need or the community of other neurodivergent individuals (in the case that I do have ADHD or something else) but if I do get a diagnosis and end up being neurodivergent, I’ll be shamed by my family and end up alone in that way. So I don’t win in either situations
And I know I can use resources if they help make my life easier, but I feel like such a fraud like, “Oh look at this loser, she’s using resources for people with ADHD and Autism even though she’s undiagnosed, I bet she’s just faking it.”
I don’t want to be unfair to those who do actually need help but I also feel like I need help with nobody to help me and I’m lost and scared and frustrated and confused and hghhghhjgfhhnn
#it’s so complicated and I don’t know what to do#I’d really be getting the diagnosis for me#because as I’ve mentioned before#medication scares me#but even that makes me feel bad#idk I’m just thinking out loud#I’m just tired of being confused#and I’m tired of being stuck in the middle of something#did anyone else feel like this before they got diagnosed?#I need some insight#because I don’t want to be that person who takes away from people who know for sure that they are neurodivergent#because I would feel terrible if I did that#sfw interaction only#sfw agere#sfw age regression#age regressor#age regression#agere blog#agere positivity#quizzyrambles#Quizzyrants#quizzyvents
