Saw A Case for the Existence of God last night. Noah was so goddamn good, and BEAUTIFUL (I only thought he was cute as Patrick -- please don't kill me!) Holy hell is he more gorgeous in person. Also must genuflect in front of Mazin Elsadig; his role was "showier" but not in an obnoxious way. He was terrifyingly real. Also also: in a time when disordered masculinity is threatening to blow up the world, I can't imagine a better dissertation on it. Rounds of applause and bouquets all about.
That is so wonderful to hear and I'm so jealous of everyone who got to see what, by all accounts, was a really great theatre experience.

Blackface in Hollywood has never been funny. People are just admitting it now | Appradab
I’m simply as weary as Black individuals are of declaring to White individuals which you can gown up for Halloween as a Black (or brown) celeb with out darkening your pores and skin.
Not even Drake will get a move.
The rapper faced a firestorm in 2018 after a 2007 picture of him in blackface surfaced — regardless of his rationalization that it was an try by him and his then finest pal, Sudanese actor Mazin Elsadig, “to spotlight and lift our frustrations with not all the time getting a good likelihood within the business and to make some extent that the wrestle for Black actors had not modified a lot.”
That is as a result of the ache tied to the legacy of blackface is very real and very present for Black people.
Whereas White individuals could have been tickled by it, the follow of blackface has all the time been met with derision by many Black individuals.
‘Individuals are lastly understanding’
The reckoning over racial injustice has now triggered some introspection which lately led Jimmy Kimmel to apologize for performing skits in blackface and Tina Fey to request episodes of her “30 Rock” series that contained scenes with actors in blackface be pulled.
Nsenga Burton, a professor of movie and media research at Emory College in Atlanta, Georgia advised Appradab you’d need to be dwelling below a rock to not perceive how offensive blackface is to the Black neighborhood.
“I feel individuals are lastly understanding the connection or making the connections between this racist, symbolism and imagery that is been out right here for nicely over 100 years with what is going on to Black individuals in society,” stated Burton, who’s Black, and like Fey an alumna of Northwestern College.
“Individuals are simply lastly making that connection primarily based on how excessive the violence towards Black individuals has been and are actually keen to know the methods wherein these methods of oppression work collectively and are held collectively by establishments, together with the Hollywood business,” she stated.”Leisure is an establishment.”
Minorities, particularly Black individuals, have long been the punchline of Hollywood’s jokes.
The usage of blackface started within the mid-19th century, when performers would darken their pores and skin and exaggerate their lips as a part of touring minstrel exhibits.
Racist audiences weren’t involved in seeing Black individuals carry out onstage. However have been entertained by actors made to look Black who would sing and dance like “the darkies.”
The follow finally unfold to Black actors who would use the make-up to cover their precise race from audiences. That developed to Black actors displaying their faces, however taking up stereotypical roles utilizing exaggerated Black dialect that was in some ways “vocal blackface.”
Vaudeville gave beginning to Hollywood which serves as a microcosm of the world.
Burton identified that the business “is constructed on a basis of White supremacist notion and pondering, and it was all the time created to serve and fulfill that perverse want for Black individuals to be the butt of the jokes and to normalize energy relationships.”
“So whereas individuals have very candid conversations about gender and the way Hollywood normalized gender relationships and representations and people varieties of points, they nonetheless haven’t been as enthusiastic about admitting that racism can be foundational in Hollywood,” she stated.
Disaster of conscience?
So foundational that solely final yr Tyler Perry was celebrated for becoming the first Black owner and head of a major studio and even essentially the most profitable Black performers have needed to make decisions concerning whether or not or to not “grin and bear it” with regards to portraying racial stereotypes in the event that they wish to work.
In 2005 Dave Chappelle talked to Time magazine about why he walked away from his astronomically standard Comedy Central present that yr on the peak of his success.
He advised the publication the final skit he had shot for his present earlier than abandoning his collection was about “magic pixies that embody stereotypes concerning the races.”
“The black pixie — performed by Chappelle — wears blackface and tries to persuade blacks to behave in stereotypical methods. Chappelle thought the sketch was humorous, the type of factor his pals would snort at,” Time author Chris Farley famous. “However on the taping, one spectator, a white man, laughed notably loud and lengthy. His laughter struck Chappelle as unsuitable, and he questioned if the brand new season of his present had gone from sending up stereotypes to merely reinforcing them.”
Chappelle lamented on the time that “When [the White man] laughed, it made me uncomfortable” and stated he advised himself he wanted to take a timeout “As a result of my head virtually exploded.”
He wouldn’t return to his profession till 12 years later.
Leisure’s influence
Actor and author Allen Maldonado understands that wrestle.
Greatest identified for his roles as Curtis on the ABC comedy “Black-ish” and Bobby on the TBS comedy “The Final O.G.” (TBS is owned by Appradab’s dad or mum firm), Maldonado has additionally served as a author for “The Final O.G.” and the Starz collection “Survivors Regret.”
He advised Appradab that Kimmel and Fey’s strikes to disavow blackface are necessary provided that they’re “highly effective white influencers” who can use their privilege to assist change the tradition.
And whereas he stated he is been lucky to work in numerous writers rooms, Maldonado stated there must be each extra illustration and belief in these already representing to make sure that biased and insulting content material does not make it is manner onto the display.
“Individuals in energy simply must step out of the best way,” Maldonado stated. “Get out of the best way generally and actually belief the Black voices in your room to be like ‘Hey, this is not cool, this is not humorous.’ They have to be including extra Black, Latino, and Asian voices as a result of all of us must get in there and have a shared voice within the room once we create leisure, as a result of leisure has such a big influence on society and the way we view issues.”
In order society goes, so ought to Tinseltown if there are any hopes of reworking a second right into a motion.

DRAKE RESPONDS TO BLACKFACE CONTROVERSY IN NEW STATEMENT
'I WANT TO CLARIFY THIS IMAGE IN QUESTION'.
Drake has finally responded to Pusha T's scathing dis record "The Story of Adidon," but not in the way most were predicting. Wednesday night (May 30), the Toronto rapper posted a statement on Instagram explaining the photo featuring him in blackface that Push used for the cover of his track. "I know everyone is enjoying the circus but I want to clarify this image in question," Drake wrote in an Instagram story. "This was not from a clothing brand shoot or my music career. This picture is from 2007, a time in my life where I was an actor and I was working on a project that was about young black actors struggling to get roles, being stereotyped and type cast. The photos represented how African Americans were once wrongfully portrayed in entertainment." Drake speaks on “blackface” photos circulating. pic.twitter.com/y3SrOl9DcQ — Word On Road (@WordOnRd) May 31, 2018 Drizzy went onto explain that the photo, taken by photographer David Leyes, was part of a project aimed at showing the frustrations that he and his best friend felt as black actors. "Me and my best friend Mazin Elsadig who is also an actor from Sudan were attempting to use our voice to bring awareness to the issues we dealt with all the time as black actors at auditions," Graham continues. "This was to highlight and raise our frustrations with not always getting a fair chance in the industry and to make a point that the struggle for black actors had not changed much." Since the photo was revealed, many people traced Drake's clothing in it to the streetwear brand Too Black Guys, which released a "Jim Crow Couture/House of Crow" collection in 2008. However, the brand's founder, Adrian Aitcheson, issued a statement sharing that the company was not involved in the photo. "Too Black Guys has a history of representing the black experience in an unapologetic way," Aitcheson wrote. Although this was not an image from any of our photoshoots, we feel that Drake, who is a long-time friend of the brand, was brilliantly illustrating the hypocrisy of the Jim Crow Era." Please stop referring to this picture as “artwork”...I’m not an internet baby, I don’t edit images...this is a REAL picture...these are his truths, see for yourself https://t.co/gd6vRS3HM8 pic.twitter.com/2el58HEZ8F — King Push (@PUSHA_T) May 30, 2018 The current spat between Drake and Pusha T is one of the most ruthless in recent memory. Push's "Infrared" reignited a seven-year beef, which Graham was happy to respond to on "Duppy Freestyle." Unfortunately for Drake, a decade-old photo has quickly taken over the narrative. It isn't every day that a rapper responds to beef with a written statement, but at this point, it was unavoidable. On Thursday (May 31), Pusha T responded to Drake's explanation in a radio interview with Real 92.3 in Los Angeles. "That doesn't change my view at all," Pusha said. "You are silent on all black issues, Drake. ... You don't stand for nothing, you don't say nothing about nothing." "You have all the platform in the world," he said. "You were so passionate back then? No you weren't. That's number one. That's what I know.” Read the full article

The picture in question is of a young Drake in black face while wearing a Jim Crow shirt which understandably caused quite the commotion on the Internet and needless to say, fans were outraged over the photo. Of course, this wasn’t just something Drake could ignore. The controversy definitely didn’t seem to be dying down any time soon, so Drake did what anyone in his position would do: explain himself to the world. In a lengthy note shared on his Insta Story, Drake wrote QUOTE, “I know everyone is enjoying the circus but I want to clarify this image in question. This was not from a clothing brand shoot or my music career. This picture is from 2007, a time in my life where I was an actor and I was working on a project that was about young black actors struggling to get roles, being stereotyped and type cast. The photos represented how African Americans were once wrongfully portrayed in entertainment. Me and my best friend at the time, Mazin Elsadig, who is also an actor from Sudan, were attempting to use our voice to bring awareness to the issues we dealt with all the time as black actors at auditions. This was to highlight and raise our frustrations with not always getting a fair chance in the industry and to make a point that the struggle for black actors had not changed much.” So there you have it, the reason behind why Drake decided to partake this controversial photoshoot from 2007.
