Recently Viewed: Dreaming of the Meridian Arc and She is me, I am her
Today, following an interminably long absence (thanks in large part to the cancellation of this year’s Japan Cuts, which absolutely devastated me), I finally returned to Japan Society—my favorite venue in New York City—for a double feature:
Dreaming of the Meridian Arc
To be perfectly honest, I went into this expecting a middling jidaigeki at best—generic, formulaic, and unimaginative. I was therefore delighted to discover that it was more subversive and postmodern than the standard fare, akin to Kazuo Mori’s Vendetta of a Samurai (albeit to a lesser degree).
Tumblr media
Like that Kurosawa-penned hidden gem, this film features a modern-day framing device, in which a group of mild-mannered city officials struggle to produce a historical epic about local folk hero Tadataka Ino—the cartographer that, in 1821, created the first accurate map of Japan. When their hired writer discovers that their subject actually died three years prior to the officially recorded completion of his life’s work, however, our protagonists must untangle fact from fiction in order to find the human “truth” behind the legend.
The result, for better or worse, is a tearjerker as precisely calculated as a trigonometry equation. While the visual style practically screams “made-for-TV movie” (whenever something suitably melodramatic occurs, for example, every character gets a dedicated reaction shot), the cast certainly delivers where it counts; the actors obviously had a blast playing their dual roles (a gimmick that owes a greater debt to The Wizard of Oz than it does to Tadashi Imai’s Bushido: The Cruel Code of the Samurai, I think).
Tumblr media
Ultimately, despite its slight themes and modest ambitions (its intention to promote tourism couldn't be more transparent), Dreaming of the Meridian Arc is a charming, funny, and effortlessly entertaining diversion.
She is me, I am her
This COVID-themed anthology film is a master class in minimalism. The introductory vignette alone is worth the price of admission. Its story—which revolves around a trio college friends reconnecting over FaceTime after twenty years of radio silence—unfolds almost entirely in tight closeups, elegantly conveying the claustrophobia of quarantine-era existence. As the protagonists acknowledge, confront, and resolve the underlying tensions and unspoken resentments that shattered their relationship in the first place, however, the frame gradually widens out, revealing the empty space surrounding them—thus emphasizing their loneliness and isolation.
Tumblr media
The remaining three shorts are equally compelling, tackling such poignant and relevant topics as unemployment, homelessness, prostitution, broken dreams, and the unanticipated disruption of everyday routines that people take for granted. Writer/director Mayu Nakamura personifies the indie spirit, accomplishing more than the average Hollywood blockbuster with significantly fewer resources. After all, producing a work of transcendent beauty doesn’t require a huge budget; you just need a simple premise, a small cast of relatable characters, a handful of real locations—and a clear enough creative vision to weave all of those disparate elements together.

The Witch and the Beast #2 - The Witch's Pastime: Final Act
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Screenplay: Yuuichirou Momose Storyboard: Toshiyuki Sone Episode Direction: Masahiko Suzuki Chief Episode Direction: Makoto Tamagawa Chief Animation Direction: Hiroya Iijima Animation Direction: Makoto Shimojima, Kazuharu Tada, Miyoko Shikibu, Miyako Nishida, Geun-Su Lim (Monster AD: Shouya Gotou) Key Animation: Yuka Anze, Yasunori Yamaguchi, Kouichi Takai, Ryou Suzuki, Mizuki Nakane, Shouya Gotou, Tomokazu Gunji, Aya Nagumo, Mayu Nakamura, Mitsuyo Tsuno, Riku Yamahira, Kazumasa Takeuchi, Hideo Maru, Seon-Hui Kim, Studio Toy Box, Kou Kitakaze
Better late than never, right? On my first watch of this episode, I'm not going to lie; I was a bit harsh on it. I couldn't keep the inconsistency and off-model nature of the episode out of my mind (most of which I hope will be fixed in the Blu-rays), and it kind of blinded me in my real assessment of this episode. I want you guys to keep in mind that this is one of my favorite mangas of all time, so I have very high standards for it. Seeing these production issues crop up just isn't a great feeling when the animation itself is already quite limiting.
Despite all of that, I'd still describe it as a reasonably decent episode, though not quite on par with episode 1. However, it did feature some remarkable shots that were visually stunning, courtesy once again of Hirotsugu Kakoi's art direction plus his team at Kagoshima Ramecahirim. The storyboarder of this episode, Toshiyuki Sone, while quite derivative of the manga, I believe, had many shots that make great use of the excellent background art and has a serious sense of depth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When the scenes are good, they're REALLY good. I've noticed that the show particularly shines during nighttime, and I absolutely love it; it has become my favorite visual aspect of the series so far. Recently, I saw someone describe The Witch and the Beast as a grotesque and gory show, which is only partly true. This manga is aesthetically inclined, balancing the gory and the beautiful, and I believe these specific shots emphasize that quality. The new city setting is dark, empty, and moody, yet it's visually captivating—almost like eye candy. The ethereal lights style, illuminating everything, coupled with the depth and details presented in the aftermath of the victims, all come together in a gory yet beautiful amalgamation for example.
The animation in this episode was still overall limiting, but it wasn't one that particularly needed much per the narrative (of this episode). As mentioned before, the consistency really bothers me, along with some odd choices that could perhaps be attributed to the direction of this episode. The zoom in with Ashaf casting his spell looked low-res when zoomed in and somewhat disrupted my immersion in the episode. Guideau hitting the handrails had this weird effect applied instead of proper animation, which felt awkward. The entire restaurant scene in the second half of the episode was extremely off-model. Despite these issues, the actual episode, both in the narrative adaptation and the background/board ideas, still meshes pretty well with my vision of the manga.
I also hope that, considering this is arguably one of the less important arcs, when we reach Episode 4, which focuses on Johan and Phanora's arc or beyond (don't worry, I'll write about Episode 3 right after this), there will be an improvement in the production levels compared to what we've seen in this episode. I'm optimistic that they've been saving their staff for these more significant episodes. While I acknowledge that this isn't the best production ever, I appreciate the art direction, some of the storyboarding has been quite good, and the show as a whole has been a decent adaptation of the manga. However, I would like to see more consistency going forward.

Wonderful Precure Episode 33 Review - Full Smile Voice
I never expected Iroha’s dad Tsuyoshi to be the focus of this episode. It’s nice to see more of Iroha’s parents as they are good parents that deserve more screen time. It’s nice to know why he became a groomer and why people come to him for grooming.
Tumblr media
It’s nice to see that a buff man like Tsuyoshi being absolutely sweet and gentle towards small animals. He normally has a deep voice, but raises it so animals can be friendly towards him. This actually does apply in real life as animals are sensitive to noise. Dogs in particular have sensitive ears, so they don’t like loud noises. I always raise my voice and talk cutely to my dogs because it makes them happy. The way he got Moca to like him was super cute. Heck, her owner was even surprised by it too as this was the first time she took her dog to get groomed. He’s super knowledgable towards other animals too. Heck, he even checked Yuki’s claws and filed them for her so she wouldn’t get them caught in odd strings and stuff; Yuki’s normally timid around strangers.
I guess my only gripe is that Yuko only told about her story about Tsuyoshi, but we never see any flashbacks or what not. I’d love to see a flashback of their youth. If this was a story about Iroha’s parents, we should’ve seen them in their younger days. I’d love to see what they looked like back then and how they met.
So, I was right in my theory that Torame creates GaoGaons from the Niko Animal Eggs while Zakuro possesses animals. I wonder just how many animals are left to rescue.
Also, I want to talk about how Daifuku’s voice actor got revealed for the movie. Apparently, he’s voiced by Yuichi Nakamura, who’s known for being the voice actor of Satoru Gojo from Jujutsu Kaisen and has been on a lot of shows as a handsome older guy like Sein from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End or cool older senpais like Kuroo from Haikyuu and Umemiya from Wind Breaker. For him to voice a cute bunny like Daifuku is probably the most hilarious thing ever and Twitter is having a field day with it right now. I heard a snippet of his voice and the ikemen voice is killing me. Well, it was hinted that Daifuku had a deep voice back in Episode 7 where Komugi was translating what he was saying to his owner. Since he also has a human form revealed in that movie, I wonder if it’ll transition over to the anime. It’d be a waste to use Yuichi Nakamura once and then never use the talking Daifuku voice again, right?
It seems that Mayu’s dad will return in next week’s episode. It’s nice that the Precures are getting focus with their parents. I hope to learn more about Mayu’s dad now that we learned a lot about Iroha’s dad in this episode. Also, the fact that Yuki turned into a cat toy via Kirarin Fox is gonna be stuff for memes like Tire Komugi. What are your thoughts on this episode?

top watches for september
from this month:
will ospreay vs naomichi marufuji, noah naomichi marufuji debut 25th anniversary show 09/17 — not only my favorite match of the month but my most anticipated one as well! i think it's always interesting to see ospreay be taken out of his usual pace and perform with more breathing room between spots (even if his snappier sequences are what drew me in initially). there are a lot of quiet moments in this match, mixed with that devoted eagerness that ospreay had while he was a junior. it's also a match that is able to tap into something very special thanks to the emotional padding behind it that i think ospreay's other big match from this month (vs yota tsuji) is unable to match
syuri vs mayu iwatani, stardom 5star grand prix day 14 09/03 — syuri is my favorite joshi to watch currently! she wrestles such a loud, hard-hitting style that still feels fresh in the technical scene and she has great in-ring chemistry with mayu here. mayu's reversal of the syu-sekai though... gah! a relatively short match and one of my favorites from the entire gp
bryan danielson vs ricky starks, no disqualification strap match, aew all out 09/03 — the singular non-puro match on this list, which should already give you an idea of how truly great it is. ricky has been a highlight on collision pretty much since it began airing, and the natural charisma that shined through there is ever-present in his recent matches. bloody, brutal, and better than the follow-up texas death rematch in terms of cohesion
zack sabre jr. vs ryohei oiwa, njpw road to destruction 09/08 — i was ecstatic to have boltin oleg in a high-profile match! ...and then it didn't happen. but worry not! oiwa stole the show. it definitely didn't feel as one-sided as it would've if it was oiwa pre-excursion pitted against zack. excited to see more from him
takayuki ueki vs baliyan akki, baka gaijin + friends vol. 8 09/20 — the mad doctor takes on akki, returning superstar of the show, after mecha mummy fails to drill a hole through harashima and is subsequently defeated. it's as silly as it sounds
back catalogue:
shinsuke nakamura vs the great muta, noah the new year 2023 — positively overwhelming presentation in terms of the entrances. misting as a metaphor for relatedness rather than corruption. unstoppable force meets immovable object, up until the object embraces the force. a sentimental finish that stuck with me
katsuyori shibata vs kazuchika okada, njpw sakura genesis 2017 — a holistically tactile bout full of sweaty contact and undying resolve. okada finds himself in the rare predicament of not being the fan favorite! practically impossible to look away during this one
pheromones (danshoku dieno & yuki iino) & shunma katsumata vs akito, kazuki hirata & yuya koroku, ddt sweet dreams! 2023 tour in shinjuku ~ fire! ~ — a typical pheromones match in that it contains loads of their trademark spots (synchronized striptease routines, dramatic jockstrap reveals, "accidental" ass to mouth action) however! this time shunma is there to act as their pup (which he is very much into). a must-watch for fans of public kink in wrestling
atsushi onita vs hayabusa, no ropes barbed wire current mine explosion time bomb deathmatch, fmw 6th anniversary show 1995 — hayabusa comes off as a trapped animal within onita’s environment, only delaying the inevitable with each move. feels and looks like a horror movie, with the counter droning on in the first half and the smoke wafting through the cage of barbed wire in the second. explosions galore!
shotaro ashino vs koji doi, wrestle-1 grand prix 2018 finals — this was my first exposure to ashino and let me tell you... he's so good. his entrance is fuel by metallica, he's cocky, he goes hard in the ring. i'm genuinely shocked he's not a bigger name internationally. nothing too extravagant aside from a few high-impact spots but worth a watch
