Bottom Dollar
I remember back to late-70s and early-80s, when the US suffered through double-digit inflation. Times were tough on the bottom half of the population. Prices were skyrocketing, especially in foods. The effect was so profound that the Fed learned from it and has made it their objective to use monetary policy to control interest rates and try to keep inflation at bay. So far, they have been pretty successful.
But that didn’t exactly help Americans 40 years ago, who were trying to make ends meet. In an effort to try to alleviate some of the pain, food manufacturers across the board started introducing low-cost generic products, canned and bottled with the ubiquitous white label and black printing that said only what the contents were. Beans. Sauce. Mayonnaise. Corn Flakes.

These were the bottom of the food chain, lower than the private label products which by then many grocers had been contracting out to national manufacturers. The top of the food chain, of course, was the national brands.
I remember this era all too well. I was off pursuing my education, and on a grad school budget, those generics really helped out. But as the economy improved, there came to be a stigma attached to buying them. Pity the person observed at the supermarket with a cart full of those easily-identified cheap products. They thus went away for the most part, their purpose served.
Today, though, the pandemic has caused a different kind of problem. It’s not inflation. No, it has been unemployment, those nasty furloughs that started happening about a year ago as cities and states were locked down. The effect has been profound, and retailers like Dollar Tree and Dollar General have seen their revenues (and profits) soar as shoppers shift gears and look for bargains.
So good have things been that Dollar Tree, which also owns Family Dollar, is opening 600 new stores this year. Arch rival Dollar General has been on even more of a tear, adding more than 1000 new stores each year the last several years.

Lest you think that Dollar Tree owns redundant chains, the flagship namesake is aimed at suburban middle-class customers, while Family Dollar is targeted at lower-income rural and urban shoppers. It’s a fine line when you are at the bottom of the retail food chain, but if it helps people get by, then more power to everyone.
Some of the new stores will be hybrids, with all of the discount items for which Dollar Tree is known, but also more foods in keeping with Family Dollar’s game plan. It is a strategy that has already been deployed by Dollar General in some markets, in which they are truly America’s General Store.
Think rural food deserts. Some folks would have to drive 30 minutes or more to get to a grocery, but they can get all of the basics at DG, as well as low prices on other items. Dollar Tree is a day late and a few dollars short in this move, but the market is still ripe.
I’m just thankful that I don’t have to rely on such stores for my existence. The last time I was in a Dollar General was last spring when I was looking for--ahem--toilet paper. I didn’t find any, but I did walk away with some disinfectant.
All that aside, I can only wonder how well Dollar Tree and Dollar General will fare once the economy turns around. Will they shutter some stores, or will the poor always be among us, as Jesus reportedly once said? Investors would love to take a peak into that crystal ball. Their stock, just like Dollar General’s, is riding a wave that is almost embarrassingly high considering that they are truly bottom feeders.
But then again, how is this any different from what the big food manufacturers were doing 40 years ago? Not one bit.
Because everyone needs to eat.
