10 Games That are Still Good for Two
These games were designed for more players but come with 2-player variants and we still enjoy them.
1. BRASS: LANCASHIRE or BRASS: BIRMINGHAM
Designers: Gavan Brown, Matt Tolman, Martin Wallace Publisher: Roxley Theme: Industrial Revolution, England
We haven’t decided if we prefer Lancashire or Birmingham. For two players, Lancashire offers a smaller and tighter map so you feel like you are competing for limited locations to move your coal, steel, cotton... There is more tension. Birmingham is a larger map with more things to acquire, and more things to do (eg, all sales transactions require sufficient beer). On your turn you play 2 cards to build canal or rail links between cities, develop industries, buy and sell goods… Yes, this sounds like any other worker placement game, but Brass is really well-done, and the moody art is stunning.
2. CYCLADES
Designers: Bruno Cathala, Ludovic Maublanc Publisher: Matagot Theme: Greek Mythology
We love Greek mythology! If you are after a cut-throat battle in Ancient Greece, Cyclades is it! On your turn, you are bidding for help from the Gods (each one bestowing different powers), conquering islands, and recruiting creatures of myth and legend. The first player to establish three Metropolises (2-player variant) or collect four Philosophers is the winner. Sink your enemy’s ships! Release the Kraken!
3. BUNNY KINGDOM
Designer: Richard Garfield Publisher: IELLO Theme: Feudal Bunnies
We picked up a more intuitive 2-player rule variant from the BGG forums; and don’t use the official one in the rule book. In this game, you are controlling as much space and as many different resources as possible to get the most points. Points are calculated by multiplying castle turrets with unique resources in each “bunny fief,” plus bonus card bonuses. There is a lot of math involved...
4. TERRAFORMING MARS
Designer: Jacob Fryxelius Publisher: FryxGames Theme: Corporations compete to terraform Mars
We play with the “Prelude” and “Venus Next” expansions.
On Mars, your goal is to raise the temperature, build cities, plant greenery to generate oxygen and create oceans, while making as much money as possible - which allows you to do more terraforming. The game ends when Mars is terraformed and the player with the most points wins. Warning: The card images are bland and awful, and the game itself is quite long and meditative. We play with upgraded 3D tiles (bought on Etsy) which make such a difference to the overall table presence of the game.
5. ABOMINATION: HEIR OF FRANKENSTEIN
Designer: Dan Blanchett Publisher: Plaid Hat Games Theme: Collect body parts to build a monster
A game sequel to Mary Shelley’s book. You are a scientist in 18th century Paris - sending your assistants to different locations (Cemetery, Hospital, Morgue, Docks, etc) to collect organs, muscle, bone and blood to build and bring a creature to life before the law catches up to ypu. You also need to keep your body parts fresh to score more points, and roll dice to charge your leden jars. The art is very gruesome and we love how thematic this game is. Better with 3 or more players but still fun with 2.
*We upgraded our components (purchased on Etsy).
6. GHOST STORIES
Designer: Antoine Bauza Publisher: Repos Productions Theme: You are Taoist monks fighting Chinese ghosts
This co-operative game is best for 4 players/monks but the 2-player variant is still fun. The imagery and components are amazing in this game. The ghosts come in four types - blue water ghosts, green plague ghosts, red blood ghosts, and yellow ghouls and zombies. They are relentless and there is a lot of tension in a whack-a-mole sense. To win, you have to exorcise all the ghosts (with die rolls and tokens), save the villagers, not die, and defeat Wu Feng, the most evil of them all.
*We insist on the White Moon expansion or you will never win!
7. TZOLK’IN, THE MAYAN CALENDAR
Designers: Simone Luciani, Daniele Tascini Publisher: Czech Games Edition Theme: Mayan civilization
The board is amazing - with six turning “pyramid” wheels and so much to do. On each turn you either place or pick up your workers to gain resources (corn, wood, iron, gold etc), build buildings, advance on the “technology track” or make offerings to the Gods. There is a lot of corn involved which is also important for feeding your workers. Tzolk’in requires learning what all the icons mean, and serious forward planning because those wheels keep turning and worker locations change and the game can end before you get to do the thing you really wanted to do!
For the two-player variant, dummy workers are placed on the wheels.
8. BLACK ORCHESTRA
Designers: Philip duBarry Publisher: Game Salute Theme: Killing Hitler, World War 2
This co-operative game plays better with at least 3 players but there is no shortage of tension and excitement with 2. Over several rounds, you are preparing all the elements and planning the perfect moment to assassinate Hitler. At random moments, you are raided by the Gestapo, and being thrown in jail is really rough. However, winning Black Orchestra is the most satisfying board game victory ever.
9. YOKOHAMA
Designer: Hisashi Hayashi Publisher: Tasty Minstrel Games Theme: Trading in the Meiji Period, Japan
Yokohama’s table presence can feel overwhelming at first because there are so many board pieces and different cards that go on top of the boards, in addition to your own “warehouse” boards consisting of workers, trading houses, and shops. The variability of this set-up makes the game fun and very replayable.
In Yokohama, you are a President moving around doing business: manufacturing products (tea, silk, fish, copper), building shops, implementing new technology, importing and exporting goods. We love that there are so many different ways to score points, and we can never tell who is going to win until the very end.
*In the two-player variant which has less locations, we prefer to replace the Bank with Chinatown.
10. THE BLOODY INN
Designer: Nicolas Robert Publisher: Pearl Games Theme: You’re a murderous innkeeper in 18th century France
We love the theme and art on the cards! The rules are a little complicated at first because each card has multiple actions that happen at different times. On each round, new guests arrive at your inn. You can either bribe them, murder them, build an annex, bury and rob a corpse, or launder money while avoiding the police. At the end of the game, the player with the most francs is the winner.
*This game plays up to 4. We play with “The Carnies” expansion.

6.7 | Mid-Season God Changes
APOLLO
Apollo is getting ready to tour his way across the battleground. Apollo has struggled to bring consistent damage to fights. This inconsistency was large attributed to his passive, which had high variance based on how many stacks of Audacity he has at the start of a fight. Audacity will now gain stacks when each of his abilities damage enemy gods, giving him a more direct way to build this stacks more quickly and reliably. The Moves is also getting a boost, aiding teammates and harming enemies for an additional second.
AUDACITY
Each damaging ability now adds 2 stacks of Audacity for each enemy god hit
The Moves still adds 1 stack of Audacity for hitting enemy minions
CHAAC
SMITE’s premier Mayan action hero has been struggling lately. Chaac is well known as a consistent solo laner, but never a true playmaker. We are making one quite significant change to Chaac’s Ultimate to make sure his team fight impact is meaningful. Enemies will have a much harder time fleeing from him with Storm Call knocking enemies straight up.
STORM CALL
The knockback from this effect now knocks enemy players straight up
ISIS
Isis is receiving a mixture of Quality of Life buffs and some new utility, highlighting her ability to assist her team while bringing the damage. Funeral Rites will now affect allies at a further range, increasing how often it applies its benefits. Spirit Ball has undergone some adjustments to make it more responsive, and give Isis control over detonating it while Crowd Controlled and even dead. Circle of Protection is also seeing some loving, gaining some increased base healing and reducing damage by a higher amount at all ranks. Teams can fight more aggressively inside this field, while Isis can use this in a more defensive manner to answer ganks.
Dispel Magic is also undergoing a slight rework. Previously, Dispel Magic would boost Magical Protection of allies based on their protections. This caused it to be highly variable. We are making its defensive portion more consistent by instead applying a shield to allies and Isis when she successfully hits an enemy. Hitting multiple enemies will further increase the potency, giving Isis strong teamfight utility.
FUNERAL RITES
Increased Range from 30 to 40 units.
SPIRIT BALL
You can now re-fire this ability at any point after firing it. This includes while under the effects of crowd control and while dead.
Removed the postfire from this ability (from 0.1 to 0)
DISPEL MAGIC
Dispel Magic no longer provides a boost to Magical Protection. It instead provides a shield to Isis and nearby allies. This shield is applied within 40 units of Isis or the dispelled target.
Shield Health :90/130/170/210/250 + 40% increased potency per additional target hit.
This caps at +80% potency (3 gods hit).
The duration remains unchanged.
CIRCLE OF PROTECTION
Increased the base healing from 80/100/120/140/160 to 110/130/150/170/190
Increased the mitigations obtained from 15/15/17.5/17.5/20% to 25% at all ranks
NIKE
Nike is receiving the largest changes of any god this patch. Nike has been in an odd spot for a while, you would expect the most winning god in the game to be a popular choice, but she simply was not. In fact, she is one of the least played gods in the game. The major issues we heard from players was that she didn’t feel like she brought impact to the fight. Additionally, an ability solely dedicated to augmenting another can sometimes make her feel like she is lacking a full kit. When looking at her kit, the passive is a major contributor to her incredible win rate but it isn’t something players feel; so her predicament makes sense.
To address this we first are nerfing her passive across the board. If we want to give her an impactful feeling power without breaking her balance, this is something that must be done. With that done, we can reinvest that power into her core abilities and a full rework on Plant of Action. All abilities will now benefit from their “Plan Of Action” version as their base form, with a few numerical adjustments. Plan of Action is being replaced with a new ability: Barrier Formation!
Barrier Formation gives Nike the ability to lead the charge for her team and protect herself and allies from incoming attacks. Enemy Ranged Basic Attacks are absorbed by her, and enemies that get too close will be repelled away and dealt damage. When this effect ends (either by refiring or timing out) the Barrier will collapse and deal damage in a larger area. This ability also solidifies Nike’s role as a frontline Warrior who takes one for the team to ensure victory.
REND
This ability now always fires 3 times.
PLAN OF ACTION (BARRIER FORMATION) – FULL ABILITY REWORK
Nike conjures a protective barrier in front of her that blocks ranged Basic Attacks. While channeling the barrier Nike’s movement and rotation are limited. Enemies who get near the barrier are damaged and knocked back. At any point, Nike can re-fire the ability to collapse the barrier and deal damage to enemies in a larger area in front of her.
Channels for up to 6 seconds
She moves 50% slower while channeling
Refire Damage (single hit at end of ability)
VALIANT LEAP
This ability now always travels at the faster speed
SKADI
Kaldr is a unique god, boasting a full second character as his passive. Just kidding! Skadi and Kaldr are seeing some updates this patch to address core frustrations players face when playing as the duo. Her passive felt more akin to her 2nd ability rather than something unique to herself while Kaldr felt clunky when trying to execute the ultimate. Dying right before it went off could mean Kaldr retreating rather than fighting and a complete waste of the Ultimate ability.
Skadi is gaining an additional component to her passive when Kaldr is down, giving her the strength to avenge her fallen companion. Kaldr in turn is gaining some increased survivability , regenerating life more quickly. Finally, the Ultimate is being reworked. Rather than Kaldr immediately being restored to health and pulsing out an AoE Blizzard, Winter’s Grasp now utilizes Kaldr with an aimable targeter. He will leap to that area, restoring his health on the way, and then root enemies and begin his pulsing damage upon arrival. This gives Skadi greater control over where Kaldr is going and increased the responsiveness in more chaotic fights.
KALDR, THE WINTER WOLF
If Kaldr has 0 HP, Skadi gains 10% increased physical power
Increased Kaldr’s Hit point regeneration from 7s to 5s
WINTER’S GRASP – REWORK
A snowstorm surrounds Skadi as she chooses a location for Kaldr to attack. If Kaldr is too far he will leap there. Upon reaching the location a snowstorm also surrounds Kaldr. The initial hit of either snowstorm Roots enemies in the area and Kaldr is restored to full health. The storms persist for 4s while dealing damage to enemies every .5s
THOR
Thor is the God of Thunder, and in this update we hope to make that title more fitting. The major goals for these design changes are to give Thor a more distinct identity among Assassins, improve his kit functionality, and add some more of his core themes to his Ultimate ability. Berserker Barrage was previously a higher cooldown and longer channel, making it unclear when it should be used and difficult to use properly. It has been reworked to be a quick and snappy 3 part hit with a low cooldown. Being in Thor’s face for too long can quickly turn into a bad situation.
Anvil of Dawn is also gaining new components, thunder and lightning! After landing from his Ultimate Mjolnir will become infused with lightning, causing any damage it deals (Basic Attacks, Mjolnir’s Attunement, Berserker’s Barrage) to arc lightning to nearby targets. This not only helps in single target situations but rewards Thor for diving directly into the enemy team and causing mayhem.
BERSERKER BARRAGE – REWORK
Thor spins his hammer around him dealing damage to Enemies in front of him up to 3 times and those behind him up to 2 times. The final swing deals extra damage. Thor is immune to Knockup for the duration.
ANVIL OF DAWN – NEW COMPONENT
After Thor lands from his ultimate, his hammer Mjolnir is infused with lightning for 6 seconds.
During this buff state, each of his basic attacks and abilities chain lightning to nearby Enemy gods, damaging them with each hit

Best Things to Do in Cancun, Mexico!
Cancun, Mexico
Cancun is the official party capital of Mexico with great beachfront access to the Caribbean Sea. But there are so many more things to do in Cancun besides the beaches!
Known as the gateway to the 40% of American travelers are picking Mexico for their vacation.
I’ll be the first to tell you that Cancun is not my favorite place in Mexico.
It’s like a Mexican Las Vegas — crowded and full of obnoxious first-time tourists afraid of drinking the water or leaving their all-inclusive resorts…
There’s also the thousands of students who visit Cancun Highlights Map
How To Use This Map
Above you’ll find a map of highlights in Cancun, Mexico. Click on the top left of the map to find separate layers marking the route and points of interest. You can hide and show different layers, or click icons on the map to see the names of places I mention in this travel guide. “Star” the map to save it to your own Google Maps, or open the map in a new window for a larger version. Enjoy!
Best Things To Do In Cancun Guide
1: Explore Cancun’s Hotel Zone
The Hotel Zone at Night
Cancun is divided into two areas. Downtown, also known as Ciudad Cancun — and Cancun Island, also known as The Hotel Zone or “Zona Hotelera”.
The Hotel Zone is the primary tourist area, synonymous with resorts, catamarans, wild nightlife and beaches. It’s a 15-mile strip of sand shaped like the number seven. This is where most people stay.
As the name implies, there are tons of hotels as well as most of the nightlife and beaches. Restaurants and bars line the only road, Kulkukan Boulevard, which runs from one side of the Hotel Zone to the other.
2: Visit Downtown Cancun
If you get sick of the tourist Disneyland that is the Hotel Zone, Downtown Cancun provides a taste of local culture, with delicious street food, small shops, green parks, and Mexican Wrestling!
Downtown Cancun (aka Ciudad Cancun) is the main residential area for locals too. This is where all the people who work in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula tourist industry actually live.
Wander down to Avenida Tulum to see and experience the “real” Cancun. If you’re a foodie, make sure to stuff your face full of tacos from the vendors there. There’s a nice park too, called Parque Las Palapas.
3: Snorkeling Near Cancun
The MUSA Underwater Museum
Snorkeling turquoise blue Carribean waters is an ocean activity you can’t miss while visiting Cancun. One amazing underwater attraction is the Underwater Museum — or MUSA.
500 sculptures were created from materials which encourage coral reef development. Huge hands, statues of locals and VW Beetles, the exhibits are surrounded by ocean wildlife giving you a really unique experience.
MUSA continues to expand, as more sculptures are added, while the old ones are being eaten away by marine creatures. You can book a snorkeling tour directly starting at $30 USD.
4: Swimming In Cenotes
Check Out the Cenote Route near Cancun
Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is famous for its amazing cenotes, natural pools formed in limestone caves. The entire Riviera Maya is covered with thousands of cenotes, many of them you can swim in.
Cenotes are created when the limestone surface collapses, creating an opening into the Yucatan’s large underground river system. Most people visit them to go swimming, scuba diving or snorkeling.
Some of the best cenotes near Cancun are located along the Ruta De Cenotes (Cenote Route) near the city of Puerto Morelos, about a 30-minute drive away.
Here you’ll find Cenote La Noria, Verde Lucero, Cenote Mojarras, and Cenote Selvatica among many others. My favorite was Verde Lucero, which has its own zipline!
5: Temazcal Ceremony
Get Your Sweat On!
A Tezmacal ritual is a traditional Mayan ceremony of purification which takes place in a tiny hut. You strip down to your underwear (or swimsuit), then enter the sweat lodge which is heated with hot rocks & water, turning it into a steamy sauna.
The ceremony is led by a local shaman, who conducts the ritual and takes care of participants. The tezmacal ceremony takes place in complete darkness, as the shaman pours water over the hot rocks, chanting and using different herbs to summon spirits.
Temazcal was performed since ancient times, is seen as a purification ceremony that cleans the body, mind, and soul. As your body is sweating in the tiny hut, you enter a deep state of meditation, enhanced by the shamanic chanting.
6: Cancun’s Best Beaches
My Favorite Beach in Cancun: Playa Delfines
The 13 miles of Cancun’s coast is lined with Instagram-worthy beaches featuring soft, white sand, teal-blue waters and a cool breeze.
The Hotel Zone has many beaches where you can relax and sip your margarita, but some of them really stand out, thanks to their beauty and atmosphere.
Playa Delfines is one of the largest beaches in Cancun. It is also known for the iconic Cancun sign and for being void of hotels or resorts, which makes it a local’s favorite. The currents are quite strong, so swimming is not advised.
Playa Tortugas is best for families with kids, because it has small waves that allow swimming. The only drawback is the fact it can get crowded. You can enjoy a drink or seafood at the oceanfront restaurant.
Chac Mool Beach is the perfect place to dive into the Caribbean waters. There are plenty of operators who rent water sports equipment, which makes this beautiful beach heaven for all water sports lovers.
Playa Forum is the perfect mix between a vibrant atmosphere and a tropical retreat. It is located behind the most popular nightclub of Cancun, the Coco Bongo, this beach is filled with restaurants and bars.
7: Zip Lining In The Jungle
Zip lining is one of the hallmark adventures to do in Cancun, so you can’t miss it, even if you think you’re afraid of heights. In fact, it’s even better if you are!
There are a couple of different theme parks near Cancun with zip lines. The closest theme park where you can enjoy zip lining is Selvatica. They offer multiple packages with 10 different zip lines.
Xplor Adventure Park also has two zip line circuits, each with 7 different routes, with the highest point at 45 m (147 ft). All these adventure parks usually have other activities too, like ATVs and cenotes.
8: Chichen Itza Maya Ruins
Visit the Beautiful Chichen Itza Ruins
The Cancun Scenic Tower (aka Torre Escenica) offers amazing views of the Caribbean coast, and Cancun itself. It’s open every day from 9am – 9pm.
Hear about the history of Cancun as the tower slowly spins 360° for a spectacular birds-eye view of the entire Hotel Zone from the 100 m (300 ft) tall tower.
The ride up takes about 5 minutes, and you can spend another 15 minutes taking photos as the deck spins around giving you views in all directions.
10: Shopping At Mercado 28
Downtown Cancun’s Mercado 28
Mercado 28 (Market 28) is a huge shopping center in downtown Cancun. This isn’t your typical mall, instead, this giant flea-market boasts 600 vendors who sell pretty much everything.
From textiles to maracas and leather items, you can find some cool Mexican souvenirs at Mercado 28. Many items are handcrafted and unique, so they make great travel gifts.
Feel free to test your bargaining skills here. Resist the seller’s first price and you can walk away with a great deal. Stop by one of the local restaurants for food at a fraction of Hotel Zone prices too!
Mercado 28 is easy to reach by bus from the Hotel Zone, but make sure you look for the Super Aki store, as there are several other markets with a similar name which can fool tourists.
11: Best Cancun Nightlife & Nightclubs
Acrobats at Coco Bongo Nightclub
Ok, I can’t talk about Cancun without mentioning the nightlife. The city is known for its crazy nightlife, especially during Spring Break, when students travel to Mexico for a little fun.
After a day at the beach, when sun goes down you can unleash your energy and dance the night away. The best nightclubs in Cancun usually have long waiting lines, but it’s worth the wait.
Coco Bongo is the most popular club in Cancun. They have acrobats, cover bands and DJs who spice up the night. It’s kind of a mix between nightclub and Vegas show!
The City Nightclub features celebrity DJs like Tiesto, Fergie and Paul Van Dyk who perform on a regular basis. With three floors and nine bars, the club can hold up to 5000 people each night.
Mandala Beach Club is the place to go for a bikini party. This outdoor house music club opens daily at 9:30 PM, offering great music and delicious tropical cocktails.
Dady O is the place to go if you are looking for techno and house music, professional dancers, light shows and body painting. The club has five bars and two floors where you can party until sunrise.
12: Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP)
Stand up paddle boarding is the latest trend in Cancun, but it is also a pretty easy and friendly sport that everyone can enjoy. You can rent your own paddleboard from the beach, or join a group trip to explore a certain area.
If you are up for a challenge, join a long paddleboard tour that travels from Cancun all the way to Isla Mujeres! Other options are to paddle Nichupte Lagoon mangrove jungle or go on a sunrise wildlife tour.
13: Xoximilco
Looking to enjoy a traditional Mexico fiesta? Give Xoximilco a try! This is a Mexican party held on boats which travel on the canals near Cancun.
It’s a theme park designed after the original Xochimilco in Mexico City, where families and friends rent out boats called trajinera and float down the water listening to live musicians.
There is music, tequila, and delicious food, which makes Xoximilco a great way to taste local culture. During Xoximilco there is live music and people dance a lot. There are also many social games which keep the party going.
The music and food come from different Mexico areas, which makes the party a colorful display of local culture.
14: Sunset Sailing Trip
Sunset Sailing Cruise in Cancun, Mexico
Mexico’s Riviera Maya and Isla Mujeres offer some of the most beautiful sunsets in the Caribbean and the best way to enjoy them is on a romantic sunset sailing trip off the coast.
Board a sailing catamaran and watch the colorful sunset as the breeze plays with your hair. Most sunset sailing trips out of Cancun also offer an open bar and snacks, so you can sit back and relax.
These journeys generally last about 2 hours, and companies offer a bad-weather refund if it gets too stormy or rough.
15: Scuba Diving Adventures
Scuba Diving Dos Ojos Cenote
Cancun is a haven for water sports enthusiasts and it’s the perfect place to learn scuba diving. There are many underwater attractions in the area.
Cancun is located close to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest reef in the world. Home to dolphins, many kinds of tropical fish, eels, lobsters, nurse sharks, and majestic eagle rays.
Isla Mujeres, the underwater MUSA museum, and
Take the Ferry to Isla Mujeres
Isla Mujeres, which translates to “The Island of Women”, gets its name from the temple of Ixchel, the Maya goddess of fertility. This small island is only 20 minutes from Cancun by ferry from Hotel Zone.
Isla Mujeres offers stunning views thanks to its rocky coast and gorgeous bays. It is also the first spot where you can see the sunrise in Mexico. This sleepy fishing village offers a well-deserved pause from the crazy nightlife of Cancun.
Watch sea turtles hatching at the local turtle farm and conservation center. You can drive around the island in a rented golf-cart, visit Ixchel temple, check out Garrafon Reef Park, go kayaking, snorkeling, or visit the 19th-century ruins of Hacienda Mundaca.
17: Visit Las Coloradas
Alien Pink Lakes at Las Coloradas
The Famous Cancun Sign!
One of the most touristy things you can do in Cancun is to get a picture with the colorful Cancun sign. Located on Playa Delfines, which is easily accessible by bus, the sign is one of the local landmarks.
Once on Delfines, you can enjoy the local white sand beach, which remains one of the least developed beaches in the area.
Just pay attention to the tides and warnings, as Delfines is known for strong currents, so you might want to skip swimming and stick with sunbathing. The view is spectacular and it’s my favorite beach in Cancun.
19: Drinking At Señor Frogs
Señor Frogs is the stereotypical place to go drinking in Cancun. Here you will find a lively atmosphere, where everyone is singing and dancing, plus you can eat there too.
There’s sawdust on the floor and the walls are covered with funny signs. They serve drinks in massive “yard” glasses, and a Conga line could break out at any moment.
You can also bring kids if they are above 8 years old – but it’s not appropriate for smaller children, as there is a lot of noise and people who party hard.
20: ATVing At Xplore Park
One of the popular things to do in Cancun is riding All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) through a dirt road jungle route. There are many companies which offer ATV tours of the jungle, one of them being Xplor Park.
The ATV ride is included in the all-inclusive park entry fee of $120. You can spend a whole day there going cave swimming, rafting and zip lining, plus there is a lunch buffet and unlimited drinks.
Xplore is just one of Mexico’s many popular “adventure theme parks” located South of Cancun. Some of the others include Xcaret, Xel Ha, and
Swimming with Whale Sharks near Cancun
The Whale Shark is on the endangered species list, so having the opportunity to swim with these magnificent creatures is going to leave a strong impression.
The Yucatan peninsula is one of the places where
Watch some Crazy Mexican Wrestling!
Lucha Libre is a unique Mexican cultural experience in Cancun. There are two fighters, the good and the bad, who use a mix of wrestling, acrobatics and theatrical maneuvers in an attempt to win.
Fighters wear masks and are sometimes accompanied by little-people and drag-queens. Each fight lasts about three rounds and usually ends with someone thrown outside the ring.
Lucha Libre events are held downtown at Arena Cancun every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday night. A front row seat costs about $12 USD with beer and snacks available for sale. It’s quite a show!
23: Visit The Sea Turtles
Meet Baby Sea Turtles in Mexico
Beaches near Cancun are some of the best places in the world to find sea turtles. Between May and October you can see the turtles lay their eggs on the beach. The little ones hatch and flop into the ocean from July – December.
The best place to visit sea turtles is Tortugranja, the turtle farm and conservation center on Isla Mujeres. Green turtles, hawksbill and loggerhead turtles are the most common species you can see around Cancun and Isla Mujeres.
At Tortugranja you can see turtles all year round, in every development stage, for a $3 fee. You can feed them and interact with them under the care of a guide as well as crabs, urchins, and conches.
24: Maya Museum & San Miguelito Ruins
Museo Maya Cancun and San Miguelito Ruins cover 80 hectares in Hotel Zone. The new museum opened in 2012 with all kinds of cool Mayan archeological relics.
You will be able to walk among ruins, see ancient skeletons, jade relics, and artifacts from Chichen Itza and other Mayan sites around the Yucatan peninsula.
There are three galleries where you can discover multiple elements from Mayan history and culture. The ticket costs about $5 and grants you entry to San Miguelito ruins, which is a spread of temples, pyramids and family homes of Mayans, set in the jungle.
25: Bird Watching At Isla Contoy
Isla Contoy National Park
Isla Contoy is a bird watcher’s paradise. The small protected National Park sanctuary North of Isla Mujeres is home to more than 100 species of birds and 4 species of sea turtles.
The tropical breeze and bird spotting complete this amazing tropical heaven. Once here you can relax and just take some pictures of the wildlife, before picking up your snorkeling gear and dive into the clear waters.
Isla Contoy can be reached via an all-inclusive cruise at the cost of about $100 per person. To keep the inhabited island in pristine condition, tourists have to follow very strict rules and pick up after themselves.
26: Kayaking Nichupte Lagoon
Nichupte Lagoon is an enormous body of water made up of 5 different lagoons called Nichupte’, Río Inglés, Rio del Amor, Caleta Nizuc y Bojórquez. You can go kayaking and paddleboarding here.
It’s the only natural ecosystem that remains after the construction of Cancun’s huge Hotel Zone. The waters are surrounded by jungle paradise, heaven for bird watchers and biologists.
The fresh water coming from the rocks underneath mixes with the salt water from the sea offering a comfortable, prosperous and protective environment for many speices of fish to reproduce.
27: Day Trip To Tulum
Visit the Ruins of Tulum
If you’re visiting Cancun, you probably shouldn’t leave without stopping by the town and
Race Fancy Cars in Cancun!
Need a jolt of adrenaline? What would you do if someone handed you the keys to a $200,000 exotic luxury car and told you to drive it as fast as you can?
Exotic Rides Cancun, where they rent out luxury and exotic cars and teach you how to drive them around a race track.
You have your choice between a few different models, including the Ferrari F430, Lamborghini Murcielago, Lamborghini Gallardo, Audi R8, and Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. Woooooo!
29: Tour Cancun’s Best Taco Joints
Stuff Your Face with Tacos!
No trip to Mexico is complete without a thorough vetting of Cancun’s tastiest taco stands. You’ll find all the best tacos away from the Hotel Zone in Downtown Cancun, on Avenidas Tulum and the Parque Las Palapas area.
Make sure to order some Tacos al Pastor, the classic Mexican-shawarma style pork meat taco featuring a pineapple slice on top. The pork is marinated in a combination of dried chilies, spices, and pineapple. My favorite!
This type of meat was actually created by Lebanese immigrants, but it’s since become the Mexican standard. You can also try tacos with beef, chicken, shrimp, and if you’re brave, even cow brains or udder.
30: El Meco Ruins
The Secret El Meco Ruins in Cancun
El Meco is a set of ancient Maya ruins that aren’t well known about, located North of Downtown Cancun. There’s even a 41 foot high pyramid!
These ruins were probably related to Isla Mujeres and an important port for the Maya in the Yucatan Peninsula.
To find them, head up Avenida Lopez Portillo (aka the Cancun-Puerto Juarez road) in a rental car, taxi, or collectivo bus. The site is located at KM 27. The ruins are just off the road on the left.
Best Time To Visit Cancun
High season for Cancun is during the winter from January to March, when all the snowbirds from Canada and the United States come down to escape the cold.
This is when you’ll find the best weather and the least amount of rain. But it’s also the most expensive and most crowded season. March is typically when Spring Break madness happens.
The best time to visit Cancun for families with kids is from April to November. If you are looking to travel on a budget, visit Cancun during the rainy season, from July to October.

Transportation Around Cancun
Most people get to Cancun after flying into Cancun International Airport. From there, you can book a private shuttle or take the public ADO bus (much cheaper). Buses leave every 30 minutes and cost about 72 pesos ($4 USD).
Rental Car
Discover Car Hire searches all the big car rental companies and finds the best price. This is probably the easiest way to rent a car in Mexico.
Public Bus
There are regular ADO buses that will take you all around the Yucatan Peninsula from the ADO Cancun Bus Station. Buses are comfortable and safe.
Collectivo
The cheapest way to get around Cancun is to take a collectivo (group taxi). These are what the locals use to get around the city, but routes can be confusing if you don’t speak Spanish.
Cancun Taxis
Taking a taxi is what most tourists do, but beware that the Yucatan has a “taxi mafia” that charges high prices whenever they think they can get away with it. Always settle on the price before getting in.

‘Host’ idea board
When it came to looking for images to represent the idea of ‘host,’ I used Pinterest’s search engine. I was greeted with endless ‘tea party host’ images. I used the excuse that I was not looking into the ‘tea party’ theme to deviate. Instead, I added words like ‘possession’ and ‘parasite’ on to the end of ‘Host,’ which provided diverging supernatural natural and science fiction themes respectively.
Another interest that I admit was on my mind before the project, is how advance some ancient technologies were. If I were to create something based on ancient Egypt or the Mayans, I would feel comfortable with incorporating supernatural themes along with aesthetically suitable science-fiction as well. This gives me more freedom to pick and incorporate what themes will work best within a general area of evolving art
The temptation to forge on with my own ingrained interests instead of diverging to great lengths can be seen here. An appealing reason to come up with newer ideas, is that I am envisioning the creation of a video game I am aiming to make in the future - that is beyond this course. The pre-emptive themes I nearly plastered onto this project are to be saved for that future game.

'God Bless America' Micro-Review: "If there’s one thing that this great country of ours is known for, it’s complaining, and because of this it seems our society is on a slippery slope. So-called “experts” infect the media with fear and slander, movies are being made based on board games and "Snooki" is having a baby. It’s almost enough to make one start to wonder if the Mayans were on to something.⠀ ⠀ Yes, it would seem that we as a culture are moving toward valuing the cruel and picking on the weak, inching ever closer to becoming a nation of bullies. Or at least that’s what Bobcat Goldthwait’s film, 'God Bless America,' would have us believe, and with how good the movie is, it’s hard to counter his argument.'God Bless America' is an incredibly solid film that pushes the envelope, but never does so for pure shock value (well, there is that one scene with the baby…). It has a reason and a purpose behind it, and although the themes are thinly veiled, it doesn’t affect how potent they are. Driving these elements are the hilarious performances by Murray and Barr (who is reminiscent of Ellen Page from 'Super'). 'God Bless America' isn't for the faint of heart or anyone who might consider themselves sensitive, but it's a tremendous amount of fun, relatable for those who are annoyed with the current state of affairs."⠀ ⠀ Read full reviews at Starsandpopcorn.com!⠀ ⠀ #moviecommunity #movieweekend #moviegeeks #movienerds #moviemaniacs #moviereviewer #movietime🎥 #movies🎬 #moviefans #moviemania #cinephiles #movieblog #moviefanatic #moviecritic #moviegram #movieoftheday #movielovers #moviemagic #movietime🎬 #starsandpopcorn #movielover #instafilm #cinephile #instamovies #filmcommunity #GodBlessAmerica #comedymovies #comedymovie http://bit.ly/2U0Dd7A

Designer Diary: Last Heroes, or Genesis of an Author's First Game
by Eric Jumel
Last Heroes is a game of my design published by Ludonaute that was available at SPIEL '18 in October and released in North America on Dec. 6, 2018. English rules are available on BGG, and Ludonaute released a video teaser on its own site. In the first part of this diary, I explain the game's development, then in the second part I "interviewed" Ian Parovel and Romain Gaschet on their artistic work. From Creation... It all starts on a day in June 2016. After several months of designing for fun an expert game on the great explorations of the early twentieth century ("Terra Explorare" not to name it), I'm stuck on some game elements and cannot find any ideas or satisfactory solutions to fix them. I decide to put the prototype on hold and attack the development of a new one. I've had an idea for several days already. I love games with resources, so it's tempting to develop one, but it is not necessarily obvious how to renew the genre or to find something innovative or at least not current. I then have the following idea: What if players have to get resources from other players' boards instead of producing them? And if in addition, the other players could not refuse? That's how "Kulkan", the prototype that was to become Last Heroes, is born quite quickly. The actions of players are easily defined because I want a simple game, with few possible actions but strategy. There will be the action of providing resources to the community and the action of consuming them. It remains only to find ways to "force" the players to participate in the collective effort — perhaps through the loss of victory points — and to manage possible blockages in case of resource unavailability, maybe through a third action that brings in a joker resource. I also quickly got the idea of dual-use cards that could be either a resource or a resource-consuming objective. Apart from the mechanism of the third action, everything is still present in Last Heroes today. For the theme, I layer the concepts of giving, offering, and sacrificing on the three actions — I like when the actions have a meaning — which leads me straight to the choice of an ancient civilization: the Mayans. Once the theme is set, I use the internet to illustrate my cards and my trays.
The first version of the Kulkan prototype and the first festival outing That's it! I created a prototype and can now return to my playful delirium of archaeological foundations and excavations on legendary sites. That was the idea anyway, but I did not count on my wife pushing me to show "Kulkan" at festivals and board game clubs, including the brand-new Cannes Protolab. A few weeks later, after I learn that "Kulkan" will not have a table at Cannes, I discover that the Ludonaute team — Cédric and Anne-Cécile Lefebvre — is looking for someone to help them in Cannes. After a few exchanges, I'm selected, and we agree to meet a few weeks later at the Istres festival to get to know one another. I had planned to go there anyway to present prototypes, and Cédric tells me that he will test them there. ...To Signature Chance goes to those who get up early and are daring! So here I am on the road this Saturday morning of January 2017, starting at 7 a.m. with an idea behind the head. Arriving first on the spot, I notice the Ludonaute stand and install myself right next to it. Upon their arrival, I introduce myself, then go back to my tables to let them install their booth. While waiting for players, I suddenly see Cédric and AnneC coming to test "Kulkan". I cannot go back. And here is the drama! I'm just beginning to explain the basic principle of the game — constrained co-operation — and Cédric throws me off by saying, "This type of game never works!" A little bit destabilized but encouraged by AnneC, I continue my explanation and we attack the game. Everything goes well (except for some squeaks from Cédric). The next morning, we chain four games! From the second one on, I can see that Cédric is trying to stress the prototype, but "Kulkan" passes the beta test. Cédric and AnneC talk to each other. They are interested and really enjoyed playing. When leaving in the evening, we make an appointment ten days later to prepare the Cannes journey. I take the opportunity to ask AnneC for a debriefing on "Kulkan".
Discovery of "Kulkan" by the Ludonautes on Saturday...and new games on Sunday The following week, I receive a puzzling email. AnneC asks me to send her a print-and-play version (rather good news) to test two defects of the game that seem at risk to them (rather bad news): the importance of the starting hand and the replayability. Fortunately, the Grenoble festival arrives the following weekend and I take advantage of it to focus on these two problems — but the same issue of the starting hand is put forward: A player with a majority of valuable 1 cards at the beginning of the game cannot win because the victory points are linked to played value cards. The return home is hard as I can't see how to solve a phenomenon suffered by card players since the dawn of time: the bad luck of the starting hand. I go to sleep on Sunday night telling myself that "Kulkan" is stillborn and will end up on a shelf. On Monday night, when I leave work, it's clear I can't stop there, especially since I'm due to meet the Ludonautes the following Wednesday. I then analyze the problem in due form (via professional distortion) thinking that I shall not be the first to face it. I remember a prototype game played with Bruno Cathala himself during a festival — the Istres festival in 2016! A sign? I remember that low value cards brought power. I hold my solution. Each player already has three powers that can be used only once in a game, but since the start of playtests only one power has been systematically used in each game: the power of exchange. The value 1 cards will bring this power that allows a player to improve their hand. On Wednesday, I had barely discovered the Ludonautes' lair and drunk a coffee when Anne and Cédric offered to start with a game of "Kulkan". I explained the new rules, then we started. At the end Cédric is wallowing in silence. Even AnneC is surprised! He seems interested but does not say more. AnneC congratulates me on the changes made. For her, the game has taken on depth.
"Kulkan" at the Cannes and Ludinord festivals A few months later, when Cédric and AnneC come to my home for a game night, they give me a red box. When I open it, I immediately recognize the "Kulkan" cards. After a few seconds of interrogation, I look at my guests and understand the message: My first game will be published by Ludonaute!
Do you see I'm on another planet? The Development Phase Before signing, I knew that the Ludonautes were considering changing the universe as the sacrifice of animals is not necessarily a big seller. We started brainstorming on a new theme, but also on a new objective of the game as the realization of card combinations is a bit too mechanical. After much back and forth, Cédric calls one day to tell me he has found the idea: Players have to fight the guardians of a fortress to save a hostage and the "resources" will be ammunition to load the weapons. I am skeptical at first glance because it adds elements to the game and new mechanisms that could take precedence over the basic one that attracted people at festivals, but the first playtests sweep all my doubts aside and open up beautiful prospects for development. Moreover, the prototyped version with monster pics gives plenty of ideas to revisit the bestiary of fantastic creatures.
First version after signature The first working session is scheduled for June 2017, and it will be intense. Starting from the "Fortress" version, we chained games and ideas fuse, are challenged, rejected, enriched, or declined after each test. The principle to kill monsters is kept. They shall receive a set of predefined shots (the combinations of "Kulkan") represented by the "weapon" cards collected by players, but instead of just having to fight the monsters, we quickly agree that we must strengthen the false collaborative side of the game. We decide to add a common goal to be achieved by the group: an "end of level" boss, with a bonus to the player who causes the fatal blow! To then further accentuate the "I must help others but I'll do it for me" side, we insert the breach concept. Monsters are organized into a three-level army, with the number of moves to defeat them increasing with levels. When a player eliminates a monster, they weaken the monster of a higher level, so fewer weapons are now required to kill it. At the end of the day, we have the impression of having made a huge leap. The new concepts work well and add strategic depth — but after a few playtests at festivals, the idea of the boss turns out to be a false good idea. As the game is not collaborative, players may not agree to kill or even reach the boss. We then think to add artifacts owned by the level 3 monsters, artifacts that will generate two possible game endings. Either all the artifacts are recovered by players, then the game stops immediately and each artifact earns its owner 5 points, or players have used their ten cards and the artifacts are not all recovered, in which case artifact points are not counted. We also inserted the following rule: If a player has opened a breach below a level 3 monster that is killed during the next turn, then they will gain the artifact instead of the one who kills the monster! The playtests continue over three months. We review the balance of victory points and the distribution of card values per color; we add one-shot powers to each artifact, but everything else is maintained. During one festival we have the chance to play with Ludovic Maublanc and Théo Rivière, and at the end of the game, Ludovic feels there is too much token manipulation, especially with the ammunition to be taken on other players' cards. Cédric and I feel disappointed, but we immediately start thinking to design a solution, which is how the magazines were introduced to Last Heroes.
Different game versions The development is then finished. I am very happy with the result. The game has taken on new dimensions. It can be played with a purely strategic approach as well as in "I annoy my boyfriends" mode. The game remains simple, with only two possible actions each turn (share ammo or load a weapon), and the attack is optional. The false collaborative side has now taken on many facets, and I love that! The Publishing Job A passionate game player for more than 25 years, I realized only then the real work done by an editor. The number of small details to think about is simply monstrous. I'm not going to list them all, but many have marked me. For example, when it is necessary to give a look to the characters embodied by the players, it raises the question of people representativeness and gender equality, with the risk of falling into clichés. We have therefore opted in our soul and conscience for two women, two men and one unidentifiable person, with representatives of Asian, African and European origins. Other details are fortunately less subject to controversy, but also participate in creating the harmony of the game. How to choose the different weapons available to players? It's stupid, but if players have to load weapons, it excludes everything that is a blunt and sharp weapon. Farewell lightsabers, two-handed axes, and shuriken... Which names do we give the characters? During a brainstorming session with Ludonaute, someone suggests that the initials of the characters should form a word. I propose BEAST as "Beast Hunters" is one of the game name options, so we start finding names to stick with the anagram (forced collaboration?). After multiple exchanges, we agree on Blind, Echo, Ace, Silent and Tank. B.E.A.S.T. team is created!
Finally, some details can become fun, such as the choice of monsters as we have made a few winks to the fantasy world with a succubus, a vampire, a stone golem, a hydra, and (for role-playing fans) an eye of the beholder and a Cthulhu, of course! The game is still full of other details, and that's what makes each game unique. The Hardest Challenge of All This would be finding a name for the game. When the first illustrations of monsters arrived in early January 2018, our choice stopped on "Fantasy Hunters". It sounds like heroic fantasy and explains what the players incarnate. We like it. But as we discuss this title in Cannes with a Canadian distributor, we learn that the fantasy term sounds more like monsters wearing pink tutus dancing to Swan Lake. Do you see the image of Cthulhu in ballerinas carrying out the beholder? In short, we must change. What follows is a long time in which we brainstorm, but no name is unanimous: "Beast Hunters", "Beast Squad", "Night Hunters", "Hell Squad"... When Ian decides to go for a design reminiscent of DC Comics, we focus our research on names like "Guardians", "Defenders", "Watchmen" — and then arises "Sentinels". We repeat it several times, with different intonations; it sounds good! We take a look on the internet to check that no game has the same name. We find Sentinels of the Multiverse, but the gameplay is not the same, so we validate "Sentinels".
Then arrives the Paris festival where the final version of the "Sentinels" prototype is presented with large tarpaulins highlighting the beautiful illustrations of Romain Gaschet. The game is well received. We will be able to launch production. Ludonaute then starts to communicate about "Sentinels", with BoardGameGeek including it in a post presenting new games planned for SPIEL '18 — but a comparison with Sentinels of the Multiverse is made immediately. The comments on the forums are quite virulent, some even accusing Ludonaute of wanting to take advantage of the game's notoriety in the U.S. Others even compare fonts, which are alike of course since all DC Comics styles have been applied. To avoid any controversy, Ludonaute decides to change the name. What a mess! The game no longer has a name at the time that production must be launched. It's urgent! We spend a whole weekend, each of us in the four corners of France, calling one another to find a name. We run through all the names, fuse some of them together, but we cannot agree. We decide that everyone must propose a name — only one! — and we will choose from this list. Not an easy exercise! In the end, Last Heroes was chosen unanimously!
••• After writing my author diary, I wanted to talk about the work done by Romain Gaschet and Ian Parovel to give life to Last Heroes. I proposed interviewing them, and they accepted without hesitation. Hello Romain, your name is not known in the world of the board games, at least not as much as Ian. Can you start by introducing yourself? What is your background? How did you land in board games? Romain: I am Romain Gaschet, I also sign under the pseudonym of GeyseR for my comics and my paintings. I draw and paint permanently, but my other passion is board games. I started with comics at Bamboo Édition (Omnopolis), then worked at Soleil Editions with 42 Intergalactic Agents and Android. I also worked in the video game industry (Silverfall for Monte Cristo). I made my first illustrations for the board game world on the game GOSU, which is where I met Ian. Ian, by what criteria did you choose Romain? Ian: First, I enormously respect his work, his rigor, and his flexibility. Second, he is known for his talent that sticks perfectly to the desired atmosphere. He is a simple and attentive guy who understands perfectly the graphic and cinematographic language. Our shared love for Michael Turner's work was a rapprochement that would necessarily facilitate our common understanding of the work to be done, the rendering to be done, and the graphic constraints that such a game imposed and deserved. Romain has a crazy talent that is complicated to exploit as it is particularly hard to take on a media other than the one for which it is predestined (comics). But I knew that by exchanging a lot, we would be able to seduce players attached to this graphic style, lovers of strong visuals who will appreciate original and neat illustrations. Humberto Ramos, Frank Miller, Scott Campbell, Jack Kirby, and Stan Lee not being available (and the last one having never drawn), I had to send a word to Romain Gaschet. Romain, how did Ian present the project to you? What attracted you? R: I did not have much choice; he told me it was a question of survival for the universe as we know it. If I did not participate in the design of Last Heroes, Ragnarok would be on us and we would all die...and that it would be my fault, besides. As I still have two dreams to achieve in my life, I had to accept to save time. More seriously what attracted me was the possibility of drawing a varied bestiary. I had a blast drawing all of it: the werewolf, the succubus, the beholder, and so on.
Ian, why the choice of a DC Comics theme? I: The theme is not DC Comics, but American comics. One is a registered trademark of an American publisher, the other a graphic style. In Last Heroes, players "steal" ammo to load weapons to destroy monsters. It is important for me to tie a theme to what the game offers so that players do not feel disoriented, and they know what's in the box before buying it. Although it is possible to thematize the "feeling", I usually prefer to do research before getting into a too-pronounced style. The magazines with the counting wheels were already there, but they needed a visual justification. The idea of using skulls as belt buckles came first. It's a strong, symbolic image and very oriented toward "U.S. action movies at the end of 2000", so it needed a global package that could feel like this nostalgic point of a bygone era. Since it was out of the question to compromise with a parodic style, it was necessary to make the game live through a graphic appearance perfectly sticking to this atmosphere and the requirements of the Ludonautes. Like many other graphic arts enthusiasts, I discovered comics through the Top Cow publishing house at the end of my adolescence. It was at this time that I discovered Witchblade, Darkness, Fathom, and the very original graphic style of the late Michael Turner, who inspired a whole generation of illustrators (Keu Cha, Francisco Eduardo, David Finch, Marc Silvestri, etc.). He was one of the first to create a style linking angular lines with strong perspectives and curves of phenomenal strength but always in a "just" manner (while knowing how to play graphically with the charm of the book's protagonists). It is a very particular and marked graphic style, but it has a charm that sticks perfectly with the narrative mechanisms of the game (at least for what happens around the table between the players). It seemed obvious to me to go in this direction. The concern was to find someone who would paint with his agile fingers the heroic fresco that appeared during our test parties. Did the theme come early in the game's design? I: I would say it came after two-thirds of the balancing of the game once the final material was decided and we had to put to picture what we had in our hands. Previously, there were several tests of environments and scenarios. Romain, did you ever work in this type of universe? R: The creatures composing the universe of Last Heroes are archetypal, and it allowed me to give my comic version of each one. I have always evolved into heroic fantasy or SF universes, so it was blessed bread for me — and it was even better when Ian gave the artistic direction of the comics as I've worked for Marvel and DC as a colorist.
How did you work? Did you need to set a framework, guidelines, markers before starting? I: We have, of course, defined the technical imperatives before starting. The briefs of the cards and the elements were precise: what counted above all was to transmit the intentions to Romain and to verify that he had understood well. After this first brief, the rest quickly became clear because we were talking about the same desire, the same result, and the same vision, even though there have been adjustments after. R: The more that the brief is precise and clear at first, the more likely you are not to have too many retouches on the illustrations. Afterwards, there is always some randomness in the final rendering, but the goal is to control the best part. Has a particular element been a problem for you, has it required several tests? I: No problem but tests have been requested. It was necessary to develop overlays and iconography at the same time as the visuals, and therefore it requires a series of round trips between game tests, graphic tests, and reading tests. Ian, did the goal and play of the game influence your artistic decisions? If yes, which elements in particular? I: Obviously. The game is the basis of inspiration for the theme. A mechanism always tells something: in its course, in its beginning, its end of game, a way to win or lose. Although it is often possible to go in any direction, even to keep an abstract theme, it is necessary to find the best visual axis. So it needed enemies and a cloak of resources. The element that has most influenced the dressing is the magazine. The fact that holsters are often worn around the waist quickly defined this "belt buckle" element. The shape of the skull allowed us to bring a justified visual for its use, but its presence was such that it seemed logical to us to derive the rest of the visuals from it. This belt in the skull is the adage of an era, a prelude to films like "The Expendables" that perfectly correspond to this caricature. In its progress, Last Heroes plays with the classic codes of the "fight" games while proposing a forced co-operation, an unprecedented mechanism that can divert more than one. But after a few games and some crazy laughter, the obvious takes over: It's a rich expert game requiring some plays to be fully apprehended and offering all its potential with a group of regular players because of the conversation triggers. The visuals were made in order to allow this replayability with increased pleasure, so they are full of details that players will notice over their games. R: Yes, it's always better to know in what context my illustrations will be used. It helps to better stick to the subject.
Ian, Romain, what are the commonalities and major differences between working on a cartoon/comic and illustrating a board game? I: Working on a game is a very different exercise than a cartoon or film. It is a work of adaptation in the service of a mechanism, an idea, an atmosphere and a work that involves a multitude of constraints, whether technical or financial. The main similarity with cinema is in having to serve a purpose, a story, or an experience in the most effective way. The approach may seem more complex in that it requires building consistency with gameplay, rules, and material where for a film or a series, the construction of the visual universe is done on an entirely narrative writing, a precise script which defines all the narration of the work. In a game, the players write the scenario. We must therefore bring a coherent but open universe, allowing everyone to appropriate and build their own interpretation of the game through visuals and components adapted to the sensations of gameplay. Illustrating a game is a more complex process than simply immersing yourself in a universe; it is defining, for the players, a support to their adventure and their imagination, so that they write their own stories. R: In a comic book, the drawings form boxes, these boxes form boards, and the set of boards tells a story. All the drawings are linked for this unique purpose. In a board game, each illustration is independent and must serve the mechanisms it illustrates. We cannot compare the two as they're not the same media. ••• There you go! You now know more about the genesis of Last Heroes. Hope you enjoyed this article and that you now look forward to discovering the Last Heroes world and gameplay! Eric Jumel

Hey Jude by Paul McCartney is appreciated for its mellow tone and hopeful outlook. It began as a song of comfort for a person very close to Paul, named "Julian". Regardless of whether everyone gets the references, when the song starts, it's impossible not to sing along.

youtube
Bono wrote this song to represent the complexity and contradictions in real-world relationships including those with:

9. Sweet Caroline - Neil Diamond
youtube
Sweet Caroline wasn't written for Caroline at all. Neil's wife at the time was Marcia. While some speculated that Caroline was another woman, Neil says that the song is a tribute to Marcia, whose name didn't work in the song because it only had 2 syllables. So like so many artists do, he used some poetic license to create one of the most memorable and best sing along songs for piano.
10. Livin' on a Prayer - Bon Jovi
youtube
This song's story of hardships and just trying to get by was based on a real life of Desmond Child who co-wrote the song with Bon Jovi. 15. End of the World - Great Big Sea
youtube
Great Big Sea covered R.E.M's End of the World as We Know It (and I feel fine). On Dec 21, 2012, the day that many thought the Mayans had predicted the world would end, a Calgary radio station played the song 156 times in a row to celebrate the end. This overly-optimistic apocalypse song has enough tongue-twisters to have your guests making most of it up as they go. But that catchy chorus unites everyone into a common theme.

Maldives
There are concerns that The Maldives may be sinking due to climate change and that many of the islands will vanish within a number of years. Many of the islands are less than 1 or 2 meters above sea level and the soft soil is another contributing factor to the erosion of the land. The area of Baa Atoll has UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status and other atolls have applied for it. The world’s largest all-glass underwater restaurant, Hurawahli, is an excellent place to admire the sealife and hotels such as The Four Seasons have established marine conservation projects.
Mongolia
Mongolia might seem like an unusual choice as a holiday destination yet it is opening up to tourism thanks to the imminent opening of Nubia, aka New Ulaan Baatar International Airport. For such a huge yet sparsely populated country, it has a surprising number of high-end hotels such as the Kempinski Khan Palace and the Shangri-La. Follow in the footsteps of Genghis Khan across the steppes or grassland, for a trip like no other. You’ll encounter dzo, a cross between cattle and yak, as well as camels in the Gobi Desert. Stay for a night or two in a round tents known as ger or yurts for a true taste of life as a nomad.

It’s an easy transfer from Cancun to Riviera Maya yet the resort’s eco charm is an oasis of calm.
Central, North and South America Destinations
Belize
This country in Central America has an interesting mix of cultures. Although English is the official language, Creole and Spanish are both spoken in certain regions. There’s a wealth of natural attractions including dense jungle and the Great Blue Hole, named by Jacques Cousteau as one of the top 10 diving sites in the world. The ancient Mayan temples of Belize are well worth a visit and there are daily flights from many cities in Latin America, Canada and the States. Ecotourism is popular here and there are some stunning hotels and private villas dotted around the island.
Bermuda
This island in the Saragossa Sea is well known for the famous shorts and also for its world-class golfing and stunning pink sand beaches. Although you might think that it’s in the Caribbean, it’s actually part of British North America. If you’re lucky, you might spot the rare Cahow, Bermuda’s national bird that was thought to be extinct for nearly 300 years until it was rediscovered in 1951. The island is zika-free and there’s an abundance of luxury accommodation. In the words of Mark Twain, “You can go to heaven if you want. I’d rather stay in Bermuda.”
Canada
Canada is famous for its national parks, the Rocky Mountains and Niagara Falls. Canada Day is on 1 July and celebrations will be taking place in Ottawa, with a fireworks display on Parliament Hill and a street party, as well as Vancouver, Charlottetown and many other cities. Moreover, the exchange rate is very favourable for many travellers.
Cuba
This island is one of the most atmospheric in the Caribbean. Cuba is famous for its pastel streets and vintage cars but its lush mountain landscapes and abundant wildlife are equally impressive. With the country opening up to tourism in increasing numbers, the time is ripe to see it before it changes for ever. Infrastructure has improved considerably over the last few years and it’s worth getting out of Havana to see some of the other 15th century cities and the attractive countryside. The Sagua-Baracoa Mountains is a tropical rain forest with many species of birds and the Jardines del rey archipelago is home to the second largest coral reef in the world.
Illinois, USA
Have you ever dreamt of travelling along Route 66? The iconic route starts in Chicago and continues through the state of Illinois before crossing 7 other states. There’s lots to see on the Illinois section of the route, from vintage diners to historic landmarks like the former home of Abraham Lincoln in Springfield.
European Destinations
Andalucia, Spain
This beautiful region of Spain has always been a favourite with visitors. It’sl now even easier to reach Andalucia from the UK thanks to regular flights from London Gatwick and London City, along with many flights to Malaga and Seville. Whether you choose to visit the Alhambra by day or by night, this Moorish masterpiece won’t disappoint. Granada is also well known for its tapas and is a good gateway to the rest of Andalucia including Seville and lesser known gems like Carmona, Jaen and Ubeda. There are lots of fun things to do in Marbella and nearby Puerto Banus too.
Hamburg, Germany
This elegant German city has many attractions for the visitor interested in the arts, including the new concert hall, Elbphilharmonie which is due to open in January. It’s a perfect place for a weekend break, with a huge lake for boating and a thriving food scene. Take a look around the UNESCO World Heritage listed Warehouse District, and if you have time, the picturesque riverside suburb of Blankenese is well worth a visit. The charming Hotel Louis C. Jacob is close by, and houses a Michelin starred restaurant.
Iceland
Fans of Game of Thrones are not the only ones flocking to Iceland in their droves. Famous for its dramatic landscape, it’s also a real foodie destination and the people are among the friendliest that you’ll ever meet. From February, a new Air Iceland flight will connect Keflavik International Airport to Akureyri. This northern area of Iceland will be known as the Diamond Circle. It includes many spectacular attractions such as Dettifoss waterfall and Lake Mývatn. Of course, the famous Golden Circle in the south is not to be missed for its waterfalls and geysers. The capital, Reykjavik, is also worthy of your time – don’t miss the view from the top of Hallgrímskirkja, the striking Lutheran church.
Ireland
Another one for Game of Thrones afficionados, Northern Ireland combines spectacular scenery with charming locals. West Ireland and in particular the Wild Atlantic Way is the setting for Star Wars Episodes VII and VIII. Both regions are known for their outdoor pursuits so whether you’re into walking, cycling, fishing or clay pigeon shooting you’ll love it here. As for Dublin, the city is compact yet has the largest city park in the world, Phoenix Park. Make time to visit Farmleigh, the official Irish state guest house, before heading back into town for a Guinness and a boxty, an Irish potato pancake in the lively Temple Bar area.
Italy
Visitors to Italy will be spoilt for choice as to which places to visit, from the hidden gems of Rome to picturesque Amalfi Coast towns and off the beaten path Venice attractions. One of the top Italian destinations for 2018 is Trieste, the capital city of Friuli Venezia Giulia in Northeast Italy. It has a beautiful medieval quarter as well as some striking Austro-Hungarian architecture. Try to visit for Barcolana, one of the largest sailing regattas in the world. Top 10 Most Anticipated at Essen Spiel 2017
I know this post is a little late, since Essen is over now, but I still wanted to share my top 10 list with you. It was hard to pick only ten game. I gladly would’ve made the list longer, but ten is a conventional number for lists, so I decided to stick with it. I also plan to put out a top 10 “under the radar” list, so be on the lookout for that later this week. It’s hard to stand out in a field of over a thousand games (shout out to W. Eric Martin for putting out the Essen Preview 2017 list on BGG), but after careful consideration, I managed to put together the following list.
10. Fast Forward: Flee 9. Dragon Castle 8. Nusfjord 7. Dinosaur Island 6. Otys 5. Noria 4. Coaster Park 3. Rajas of the Ganges 2. Charterstone 1. Pandemic Legacy: S2
If you’re interested in why these games made my Top 10 List, you can keep reading below.
Fast Forward: Flee - gets my attention for 2 reasons: it’s a cooperative game AND it’s learn-as-you go. Designer Friedemann Friese has been experimenting with a different way of introducing rules. Starting with Fabled Fruit and continuing in the Flash Forward series, these games are built around the concept that you can start playing a game right away and pick up the rules as you play through the game. In Fabled Fruit, there were a few basic rules at the start of the game, but as new cards were revealed, more rules were introduced during gameplay. I wasn’t crazy about Fabled Fruit, but my better half liked it. The artwork was cute and had a family-friendly feel. I guess it just felt a bit too simple to me. Still, as a big fan of co-op, I’m looking forward to eventually playing Flee.
Dragon Castle - I wasn’t really familiar with the designers or publisher on this one, but the concept was interesting to me and the components were pretty! Did I mention I’m a sucker for eye-catching design? The concept of this game is inspired by the Chinese classic, Mahjong. Pairs of tiles are pulled from a central pyramid (looks like Mahjong) and are placed on your personal building board. I’m not exactly sure how you play, but I think the goal is to chain same tiles together on your board. When you do, you score and flip the tiles face down. You can also build shrines on top of your flipped over tiles. With appealing aesthetics and quick gameplay (30-45 min. according to BGG), I expect to see a lot of people playing this game at local boardgaming conventions.
Nusfjord - Published by Lookout Games and Mayfair--two respectable board game publishers--this one admittedly made my list because of the game’s designer, Uwe Rosenberg. Rumor has it this game is around the same weight as his earlier hit, Glass Road. That is to say, this game is a little lighter than Uwe’s epic games, like Agricola, Caverna: The Cave Farmers, and A Feast for Odin, but presumably heavier than his tetris-inspired games like Patchwork, Cottage Garden, and (another new entry at Essen) Indian Summer. By the way, I’m also interested in Indian Summer, but there are so many interesting games, it didn’t make my Top 10. Back to Nusfjord--the twist in this game is that there’s a bit of a stockholder simulation here. You can put shares of your fishing company up for sale, but if you don’t buy them back in time, your competitors can snatch them up and potentially profit from your hard work!
Dinosaur Island - is one of two games published by Pandasaurus Games on my Top 10 Essen list. One of the designers, Jonathan Gilmour, is also half the brainpower behind Dead of Winter (which happens to be in my personal Top 10 played games). Additionally, artist Kwanchai Moriya previously contributed to Kodama: The Tree Spirits, which is a beautifully illustrated game. The theme behind Dinosaur Island is ripped from the cover of Jurassic Park. All of these factors combined add up to a buzzworthy game. In it, you’re trying to run the best dinosaur theme park ever, but you have to balance public safety with carnivorous dinosaurs. After all, you can’t have those velociraptors eating all your visitors, right?
Otys - is another title that makes my list because of a splashy art cover. Honestly, I probably wouldn’t have known about this game if it weren’t for Tom Vasel. Although my tastes are normally more in line with Rahdo, this worker placement game is too pretty to ignore!
Noria - The steampunk look of this game drew me in right away. Created by Spiel des Jahres fellowship winner, Sophia Wagner, this is a strong showing from a new board game designer. The unique mechanism here appears to be a twist on a rondel. I’ve seen this game being compared to Tzolk’in: The Mayan Calendar because of the rotating wheels. Here, you can optimize your rondel by choosing which actions to add to your action selection wheel. It reminds me of the next evolution of component creation, starting with card building in Mystic Vale, then dice building in Dice Forge. Now we’ve got wheel building.
Coaster Park - is my second game of interest from Pandasaurus Games. Scott Almes (known for his Tiny Epic line of games) is the mastermind behind this coaster-building board game. Kwanchai Moriya (Kodama) is back again for the artwork here, and he’s teamed up with Peter Wocken (previous works include Dead of Winter and Sagrada). As for gameplay, first you build roller coasters out of various cardboard pieces. Then, you send a marble down your coaster to see how far it goes. Can it make it up and down the bumps and loops in your coaster? Were you born to be an engineer and didn’t know it? The physicality reminds me of Potion Explosion, even though the execution is vastly different.
Rajas of the Ganges - This one made my list because it’s designed by Inka and Markus Brand, the same duo who brought us games such as Village, Exit: The Game series, Murano, and Touria (among other titles). It looks like it might be another dice worker placement game, and I’m fond of that mechanic. Also, the 3-D elephant player marker is ridiculously cute!
Charterstone - Brought to us by Jamey Stegmaier, I’ve been looking forward to this game for two years. I actually already decided to preorder the game through coolstuffinc.com and will be getting the special promo coin that comes with it if you order from them. I’m not intentionally plugging for CSI; I’m sure everyone who’s been in the gaming hobby knows they have good discounts online. Anyway, back to gameplay--this one is a legacy style game that can be played even after the campaign is finished, so don’t throw away that game board! Jamey has proven himself as a seasoned designer (credits include Scythe, Viticulture, and Euphoria: Build a Better Dystopia). I can’t wait to play this one!
Pandemic Legacy: Season 2 - Tom Vasel says this one is better than Season 1, and I can’t even believe it. I loved the first one. I wanted to play another campaign with a different gaming group after I finished playing through the first one. I wanted to pump up my score. Regular Pandemic was more or less my gateway into the hobby. Before that, I owned Bang (the original card game) and Shadows Over Camelot, but that was it. After Pandemic, I was bitten by the board game collecting bug. Anyway, I’m expecting a one of a kind experience from Season 2, even though I won’t be among the first to own a copy.
That’s it for this Top 10. Stay tuned for my list of Top 10 under-the-radar games that debuted at Essen.

Needing visual stimulus....so I found ‘Found Objects’ Artists.
Today I’ve been feeling really overwhelmed with all the reading involved in our R&E project. Up until yesterday I felt on top of it. However, my son is poorly and a good night’s sleep is a rare thing at the moment.
Anyhow my poor brain was in desperate need of visual stimulus due to the overload of words. I didn’t want to create art today, so I googled Found Object Artists and YouTube.
Typed in my newly discovered, art term - FOUND MATERIALS AND ART THERAPY. After making my Beach People and reading a fascinating article on ‘Found Objects and Portable Studio’ by art therapists Bobby Lloyd and Debra Kalmanowitz. My interest in Found Objects and their use in Art Therapy is piqued.
So here are some past and present artists I have discovered using found materials as an emotional response (storytelling/re-visiting the past) to re-purpose the objects and give life to them again.
Marchel Duchamp (1887-1968)
His infamous Fountain 1917, an upturned urinal, shocked the art world, raising questions about what art is and the role of the artist.
Fig 1, ‘Fountain’ (Marchel Duchamp:1917)
Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)
Bull's Head is a found object artwork by Pablo Picasso, created in 1942 from seat and handlebars of a bicycle. It is described as Picasso's most famous discovery, a simple yet "astonishingly complete" metamorphosis.
Fig 2, ‘Bull’s Head’ (Pablo Picasso:1942)
Kurt Schwitters (1887-1948)
Schwitters was a significant figure in European Dadaism who invented the concept of Merz - the combination, for artistic purposes of all conceivable materials'. Whether those materials were string, cotton wool or a pram wheel, Schwitters considered them to be equal with paint. He is best known for his pioneering use of found objects and everyday materials in abstract collage, installation, poetry and performance. Schwitters’s time in Britain was quite extraordinary and continues to reverberate today, with the influence he has exerted over artists such as Richard Hamilton, Eduardo Paolozzi and Damien Hirst.
Fig 3, ‘Merz Picture 46 A Skittle Picture’ (Kurt Schwitters:1921)
Joseph Beuys (1921-86)
The glass cases favoured by Beuys are redolent of a museum, suggesting a collection of archaeological relics or scientific samples. Each case comprises a mini-environment, bringing out connections between the disparate objects. Many of the vitrines follow particular themes, and can be seen as anthologies of some of Beuys’s personal obsessions.
Fig 4, ‘Ohne Titel’ (Untitled) (Joseph Beuys:1983)
Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008)
Rauschenberg merged the realms of kitsch and fine art, employing both traditional media and found objects within his "combines" by inserting appropriated photographs and urban detritus amidst standard wall paintings.
Fig 5, ‘Bed’ (Robert Rauschenberg:1955)
Tracey Emin (1963-)
She never knew her uncle Colin as he was killed in a car accident before she was born. Saying this she still felt the need to document the tragedy, as it would be quickly forgotten once immediate family died, therefore immortalising him through her artistic status.
Fig 6, ‘Uncle Colin’ (Tracey Emin:1963-93)
Susan Hiller (1940-)
Hiller continued to work on the piece and a later version was completed in 1996 and purchased by Tate in 1998. It is generally exhibited as a single vitrine in which fifty archive boxes are displayed on two shelves, with their lids open, revealing a broad range of small artefacts. Each box is numbered and given a title corresponding to its contents. Many of the items included in Hiller’s installation are ephemeral, everyday articles, such as 45rpm records, two china creamers in the shape of cows, the English puppet Punch’s wooden slapstick. Others are objects of historical and anthropological significance, including Mayan obsidian blades and reproductions of aboriginal Australian cave paintings alongside earth collected near Papunya in Australia.
Fig 7, ‘From the Freud Museum’ (Susan Hiller:1991-6)
Mark Dion (1961-)
In 1999, artist Mark Dion and a team of local volunteers combed the shore of the river at Bankside in front of Tate Modern, and at Millbank, opposite Tate Britain. Their aim was to explore London’s rich history through its material remains, the artefacts buried within the mud and gravel of its beaches.
A wide variety of objects and fragments were uncovered, ranging from clay pipes, oyster shells and cattle teeth to plastic toys and shoes. The more unusual finds included a bottle containing a letter in Arabic script, pieces of Ballarmine pottery and a fragment of human shinbone.

Brian Petro: Found Object Artistry
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cegjSJhlfRM
A dedicated artist, Brian Petro is always on the lookout for items he can incorporate in his next work of art. He searches through abandoned buildings, and even dumpsters, to find objects that have been discarded or forgotten. Incorporating paint, mixed media and printmaking with the found objects. He describes his work as “untold stories lived again through art” and how during the process of making he “revisits his past” through the objects.
Leo Sewell: Junk Sculpture
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6de5CGzndRk
Leo Sewell uses reclaimed objects such as knife blades, packaging, signs, jewellery, dials, badges, coins, rulers, board games and changes them into another form. He is given donations of found objects as “people want their objects to live again” - his workshop holds over 100,000 found objects. Leo creates naturalistic sculptures ranging from horses, dinosaurs, eagles, ducks, dogs, a giant knife to cityscapes - he has created over 4,000 sculptures. Leo Sewell is a true bridge between the Avant Garde Dadaist traditions of Marcel Duchamp and the self-taught "outsider" visionary artists.
Jay Sawyer: Found Objects Artist
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNvGU0dTpSY
Artist Jay Sawyer from Maine, USA. He is a self-taught artist who uses 'found objects' to create large works of art for all to enjoy.
Things to know about found objects and sculptures: Subodh Gupta & Anita Dube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SW5Rl0_Jsa0
This video details two artists, firstly artist Subodh Gupta who created a huge silver sphere made from cooking pots and pans. He is described as “taking histories and making it his own”. Subodh’s work often nods to the class system of India. He uses objects that have meaning and are not selected randomly, an example of this is his installation of surgical instruments suspended on wire from the ceiling to eye level - to the viewer they are “menacing and sharp, yet they offer help and recovery”. Looking at the emotional meaning of objects and how we feel about them. The second artist is Anita Dube who used a human skeleton in her work in response to her Father’s cancer diagnosis. Her father’s medical school skeleton, which she re-purposed.
