Has anyone else read about the Mayan city that was recently discovered using LIDAR. I first saw it in WIRED & ABC News (the Australian one, though I think the American one will probably also have an article on it).
Anyway here is the link to the original paper, because mainstream media can be pretty bad at interpreting scientific papers. They actually did a good job this time, but you should be in the practice of finding the source journals & bypassing pay walls if you encounter one but can't afford to pay up ("I wanted to read these articles" isn't an excuse landlords accept) rather than just trusting non-science media to not screw up on science reporting.

Source: Fossbytes
Using cutting-edge LIDAR laser mapping technology, researchers from France’s National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) have uncovered the remains of a vast ancient city in the Amazon.
The detailed laser imagery exposed complex networks of roads, platforms, and plazas rivaling those of the Mayan civilization.
The concealed structures date back 2500 years and represent the earliest and largest low-density agrarian urbanism documented in the Amazon.
Discovered in Ecuador’s Upano Valley, the findings challenge preconceptions about the region’s history and suggest a population in the tens of thousands.
The study, published in Science, highlights the importance of reinterpreting the Amazonian world’s cultural heritage.

A Trip To Tikal
Absolute rookie error, in all my research I didn’t catch that the ticket office was 17 kilometres from the actual site. When we arrived the colectivo driver asked us if we’d bought tickets online and because we hadn’t we had to get out, buy them, then wait for the next colectivo. The queue was quite big at that time, we arrived at 6am and this seems to be the time that the tour groups rock up.…

Finding the Best Mayan Ruins in Mexico
Many of the best Mayan ruins in Mexico are found in the Yucatan Mexico tucked into the jungle and along the coast. We love learning about the history and culture of the places we travel. If you are traveling to Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or elsewhere in the Riviera Maya, we highly recommend taking the time to visit some of the best Mayan ruins in Mexico. While you likely think of lazy beach days…

Jean-Frédéric Maximilien de Waldeck (1766-1875) [a.k.a. Johann Friedrich von Waldeck], The Pyramid of Xochicalco, 1829; Fomento Cultural Banamex, Mexico City, Mexico.
A Bad Traveller
"Johann Friedrich von Waldeck was a painter and engraver in Prague who came to Mexico in 1826. He focused on the Mayan zone, meaning the Yucatán Peninsula. Unfortunately, he looted the zone and sent pieces to Europe. For this, he was forced to leave the country. In Paris, he published Picturesque and archaeological trip to the province of Yucatán between 1834 and 1836. His book also caused him problems in Mexico."
"The language that he used expressed contempt, from the descriptions of everyday life to the titles of his lithographs. Mexicans considered these expressions offensive and critics deemed him a bad traveler. Nonetheless, due to the quality of Waldeck’s work, his images were used in publications. However, the editors made a few modifications. For example, one of his images titled Smuggler Inland Indian appeared in the magazine as Yucatecan Indian. The silver lining to him and his antics was that his actions sparked the defense of Mexican cultural heritage by authorities and writers."

Tuesday, January 31, 2023 - National Plan for Vacation Day
Today, I planned my pretend vacation to Belize. We're going on an 8-day, all-inclusive trip to Belize in April. After 16 hours and 58 minutes of travel time, the shuttle will pick us up at the airport and take us to the Mystic River Resort for three nights' stay in a river view studio suite.
While there, we will go canoeing at Barton Creek Cave and ziplining through the rain forest at Calico Jack's.
Then we'll visit the Tikal Archaeological Reserve in Guatemala, an ancient Mayan site. We'll tour the ruins and enjoy watching wildlife on the hiking trails.
Then we'll be transported to The Placencia Resort for four nights in an ocean view suite.
We'll lounge on the beach, try out the paddle boards, take a bicycle ride, and explore the town. Then we'll go on the Tropical Island Experience Cruise, a boat ride to a private 2-acre island where we'll go snorkeling, have some beach barbecue and a couple of drinks at Bully's Beach Bar, then take a nap in a hammock on the beach.
Then it's back to the airport and just 27 hours and 22 minutes of travel back home again. All for the the reasonable cost of around $12,000 for the pair of us. Well, I can dream.
Happy National Plan for Vacation Day!
