In one way or another, we’ve been transporting infants since the dawn of time. Especially with hominids, wherein most children are born not fully developed. A newborn, a six-month-old, even a one-year-old can’t fully care for themselves or travel long distances. So the caretakers of these children – whoever they may be; parents, relatives, friends – carry the young on long journeys.

Across both distance and time, there have been a myriad of ways to carry a child. In some places, special carriers were made to strap a child safely to a horse. In others, a long strip of fabric would keep a child of almost any size safely strapped to your back. Woven baskets that strap over the shoulders and slings that strap a child to the chest all keep to the same principle; “come on, little one, we have places to be and things to do, and I would like to show you.”

Once a child is big enough to support their own head, there is of course the ubiquitous image of a person carrying a curious toddler around propped on one hip, cradled in one arm. “I have things to do, you’re coming with me, have a good look around while we’re here.” The carrying-in-arms can also be far more spur of the moment. “We need to leave, now.”

In social environments, baby wearing leaves the adults hands free but allows the child – if frontward facing – to be able to see the surrounding faces with ease, getting them used to social interactions early.

Anyone who has cared for an infant for any amount of time knows that one of the easiest ways to get a child to sleep is to walk with them. They would also know that children – especially children who are asleep – are heavy and just get heavier as time goes on. Strapping a child into what one might call the modern American baby carrier and taking a stroll outside with the baby cuddled to your chest accomplishes many things at once. Stomach to stomach, you can feel each other breathing. With their ear against your chest, they can hear your heartbeat, a constant, thumping, whooshing lullaby. Most of these carriers have a way to rise over the child’s head, blocking out light. It’s easy to duck your head down and kiss their hair. Their feet hang out on the sides at an easy height for holding.

It’s less bulky than a traditional stroller; after all, it’s just a foot or so added to your front. If it’s chilly or rainy out, you can zip them inside of your own jacket. An older child can face front and see the world just inches below where you do.

There are downsides, as in all things; they put pressure on the lower back or hips, the straps dig into your shoulders, if it’s hot out you both sweat through any clothes.

Despite these detractive factors, I give babywearing and baby carriers five stars.

Today we also celebrate the Righteous Joshua the son of Nun. Joshua was leader of the Israelites after the death of the Prophet Moses. He was born in Egypt around 1654 B.C. and succeeded Moses when he was eighty-five. He ruled the Israelites for twenty-five years. Joshua conquered the Promised Land, and led the Hebrew nation into it. The Lord worked a great miracle through Joshua. BNHA AU where everything is the same in this Villain Hunt Arc except everything is in the context of a D&D game and actions are decided by rolling a die. Izuku is the OFA Vestiges’ communal player character

Putting Midoriya Izuku’s Power Levels and Skill into Perspective (as of BNHA 321)

Izuku’s current most powerful move that causes no harm to himself is combining Blackwhip’s Elasticity + OFA 45% + Fa Jin. When flying at an insanely fast speed, he likely adds Float after the Initial Combo Boost.

Pictured is Izuku using the said move to escape Class 1-A.

So to catch up with him…

Class 1-A has to match his speed moves with arguably the most powerful moves from their other members, namely: Sato, Shouji, Kouda, and Dark Shadow’s raw strengths + Todoroki’s Flash Freeze Heatwave (that Sports Fest attack) + Bakugou’s Explosive Speed Turbo (which is supposed to give the most insane of speed boosts) + Uraraka’s Zero Gravity (to cancel the weight) + Iida’s Engine (guy whose main thing is speed.)

Which means that the well-rested Class 1-A took every last big move in their arsenal to even have a shot at keeping up with Izuku, who on the other hand is running on zero food and rest.

That’s how freaking powerful and fast Midoriya Izuku is, holy heck.

Aoyama and Midoriya

Aoyama being Quirkless before adds layers to his and Izuku’s relationship.

During those chapters when Aoyama was trying to befriend Izuku, it’s possible that he thought that the other had also gotten his Quirk from AFO, and was trying to confirm it by leaving cryptic messages to see how Izuku would react. However, once he’d realized that Izuku seemed to be not getting his hints that they may have the same Quirk benefactor, Aoyama withdrew back into his shell, realizing that he truly was alone in his horrible situation. Left to wallow in the guilt of repeatedly betraying his classmates.

Now, on Izuku’s part. I really love that Izuku noticed Aoyama’s sadness. In that moment of the reveal, I’ve no doubt that Izuku is also thinking of his fight with Gentle Criminal. Izuku would look at Aoyama and see what he could’ve been had he never gotten One for All.

Just as he saw himself in Gentle Criminal, Izuku could’ve been desperate enough for a Quirk just to chase his dreams, and would’ve ended up working for All for One.

Next week’s chapter will be exciting. How shall Izuku comfort Aoyama who faces him with a face that looks like it is asking for help?

AU where All Might “dies” and his body went missing (he’s fine, he’s just missing), and there’s only one person he’s listed as his sole heir. Izuku got dumped with the entire All Might estate

Izuku, grieving: “All Might! Hic— How could you leave me a lifetime’s worth of limited merchandise?!” 😭

There’s a plot twist to this AU but I’m curious if anyone could guess it

23/08/2021-Day off at Shipton Bellinger: Butterflies, moths, flowers and more

With today booked off work also we explored somewhere we’d never been before, some renowned butterfly habitat around Shipton Bellinger near to Hampshire’s border with Wiltshire. We had come to see if we could see a Brown Hairstreak a butterfly we’ve never seen which a few people we know locally have seen here recently. We didn’t see this butterfly today so may try again but it was still a very enjoyable walk. It was a lovely stretch of countryside with nice meadows and trees and I really enjoyed taking this in it had some great panoramic typical countryside views too as we walked around an initial meadow type area we found as suggested by some of the people we knew who’d come and parked at. I took the one, fourth, seventh and eighth pictures in this photoset of views at this bit.

Wildflowers really caught the eye again throughout the day here with especially lots of lovely pink and green wild basil I tweeted a photo of some on Dans_Pictures tonight and other species seen included; self-heal, rosebay willowherb, agrimony, red bartsia, ragwort, yarrow, carrot, fennel, woolley thistle, other thistle, bird vetch, hawksbeard, viper’s-bugloss which I do really like, bindweed, field scabious as shown in the third picture I took today in this photoset, eyebright, a few poppies, traveler’s joy, tiny black medick, white clover, possible weld and some lovely yellow goldenrod adorning some hedges which I learnt today. There were some charming wayfaring tree berries around too looking a divine combination for me my favourite colour scheme of red and black which was interesting to see.  On our first of two stints here it was nice to see some Holly Blue and Meadow Brown butterflies the latter shown in the sixth picture I took today in this photoset and a sweet charm of Goldfinches shown in the fifth picture I took today in this photoet flying into a bare tree which was nice to see. I also loved spotting another precious hornet mimic hoverfly after seeing my first ever yesterday at Farley Mount a brilliant species. I also saw Straw-barred Pearl and Bird-cherry ermine moths here another two new ones for me this weekend another strong aspect of it with four new ones observed, I took the second picture in this photoset of the former. With the needed sun to help with butterflies coming out more not poking through we relocated to an area within the village where some people also looking for Brown Hairstreaks had said they’d seen some around an ash tree along the track which I took the ninth picture in this photoset of. This wasn’t to be either but it was nice to see some House Sparrows and Jackdaws here. We returned to the original patch and with the blue sky just starting to show when we left this area the sun had now well and truly come out. It did hide behind clouds again at one or two moments but the second spell here was much brighter and sunnier and this did bring out the beautiful butterflies. Loads of Holly Blues danced along a well vegetated tree line where we focused our efforts as the place the Brown Hairstreaks were, it was very special to see certainly the most Holly Blues I’ve seen at once this year and possibly ever there were so many. Red Admirals were a bright and colourful delight along this vegetation too, as one other person commented one looked really nicely fresh, with lots of Brimstones about now. And after thinking I’d not seen many more of them after seeing a little second emergence late last month after seeing a few Brown Argus and Common Blue which I saw re-emerge at the same time some bright orange Small Heaths came out at the base of the grass which was nice.

I came away feeling I’d used another what became with our Rutland trip done on Friday and Saturday off day off very well. And it was also another day where we spoke to so many brilliant fellow wildlife enthusiasts we had really good quality, good humoured and much valued conversations with everyone we met which could be said about many walks this year and a lot of this weekend and today there was a real in it together spirit of what was a bit like a butterfly twitch. Something the Bird Fair which we usually go up to Rutland Water for our trip this year brought this too is such a prominent part of my year for too the social interaction so it was good today.

The tone was set for a gorgeously bright sunny summer’s evening and on the way into the house when home I liked taking in and photographing as I tweeted a trio of plants growing outside the fence the back horseweed, sweet little yellow hawksbeard glowing in the ideal sunlight and the yarrow still going strong with a common green bottle fly on which I liked noticing. In the back garden bright coloured chrysanthemums for photos and other flowers either for macro photos or just to look at caught my eye. This was a perfect end to one of my weekends of the year and ever with the two insect and flower dominated walks in Hampshire complimenting by amazing return to Rutland Water of birds and more so well as I posted about over the last twenty four hours with the Rutland Water trip  blogs, yesterday’s and this one. Thanks for all your appreciation of my posts and photos and I hope you have all had a good few days.

The sixth-grade student took the time to study a taxidermy mount from multiple angles before she approached with a question. “Is that Raticate?” she asked, pointing back at the lifelike preserved muskrat that had drawn her across the school cafeteria to the table promoting museum resources.

Raticate, she explained to my quizzical look, is a Pokémon creature. When she held up her phone, I conceded a striking resemblance between the cartoon-like beast filling the small screen and the sleek-furred stuffed rodent a few feet away. I then explained how the preserved muskrat represents a very real and relatively common mammal, one that in some seasons might be observable in the cattail-edged margins of Schenley Park’s Panther Hollow Lake, a location within a mile of where we stood.

The event, 14 months ago, was an evening meeting of a parent’s council at Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy. Although I spoke with dozens of parents during my two-hour visit, the information exchange with the student remains a clear memory because it reinforced a research paper I read days earlier.

A study published in 2002 found primary school students in the United Kingdom knew far more about Pokémon creatures than they knew about local wildlife. (Why conservationists should heed Pokémon. Balmford A, Clegg L, Coulson T, Taylor, Science 29 Mar 2002) If the study’s findings remain valid nearly twenty years later, museum strategies to counter them have become more innovative, collaborative, and purposeful. The primary example of these ongoing efforts is an upcoming event known as the City Nature Challenge.

What is the City Nature Challenge?

The City Nature Challenge (CNC), coming up April 30 – May 3, 2021, is an international effort for people to document plants and wildlife in metropolitan areas across the globe. (The Pittsburgh Region’s six county territory for the CNC includes Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Westmoreland, and Washington Counties.) The event is a bioblitz-style competition with cities competing on several measurable fronts, including the number of participants, the sum total of recorded observations, and the total number of identified species. The technology enabling broad participation and accurate data compilation in this vast observational effort is the free app, iNaturalist, utilized through the same common device by which I first glimpsed Raticate, a smartphone.

iNaturalist and City Nature Challenge History

iNaturalist, originally developed as the Master's Final Project of Nathan Agrin, Jessica Kline, and Ken-ichi Ueda at University of California at Berkeley's School of information, is now a joint initiative of the California Academy of Sciences and the National Geographic Society. As the initiative’s website explains, “iNaturalist is an online social network of people sharing biodiversity information to help each other learn about nature.”

The City Nature Challenge also has California roots, beginning in 2016 as a Los Angeles versus San Francisco contest by citizen science staff at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and California Academy of Sciences. These two institutions continue to as the principal organizers for the global effort, and this year, more than 400 cities across the globe are expected to participate in the competition.

2021 marks the fourth consecutive year for Carnegie Museum of Natural History to serve as one of CNC’s city organizer agencies. Partner organizers for this year’s event are the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy and the Pennsylvania Alliance of Environmental Educators. An online workshop for teachers and other educators to promote student participation in early March helped groups get an early start and a regularly updated web page contains current information about the event.
