8/7/24.
Spiral XP (Seattle, or therabouts) is releasing "I Wish I Was a Rat" on Danger Collective Records in October. "Luna", the first single is "an ode to the moon" according to Max Keyes (who is also the drummer in Versing).
"Luna" hooked me immediately. In fact, the guitar and some of the background vocals made me think of a shoegaze version of Pavement.
We posted about Spiral XP nearly 1 1/2 years ago, and I still feel the Stars on Fire comparison works well. They collaborated as TVXP with fellow Seattle band TV Star on a digital EP. The first song, "Winter Song", recalls early era Pastels.

Spiral XP — I Wish I Was a Rat (Danger Collective)
Poised somewhere between, shoegaze, lo-fi indie and grunge, Spiral XP slashes a slow, serrated hole through murky textures. The riffs are monumentally heavy and blurred with dissonance, each surge of guitar bulging with muscular bravado. Still the songs float on a dream-like pillow, their yearning, minor key melodies flitting through diesel fumes and smoke. “Sinner,” one of the early singles, spins out in spirals from a thunderous foundation, the battering power of three heaving guitars leavened by circling, euphoric fluttering. Think MBV but hoarier, or Dinosaur Jr. wrapped in candy-colored rainbows, or Ovlov or Aluminum. It’s an onslaught swathed in tuneful yearning.
Spiral XP was, fittingly enough, birthed out of the pandemic in the Seattle suburb of Bellingham by one Max Keyes, a veteran of the rock band Versing but mostly known as drummer. In those isolation days, he turned to guitar and recorded two quick EPs (Drop Me In and It’s Been a While) and a collaboration with TV Star (TVXP). I Wish I Was a Rat is Spiral XP’s first full-band record, bringing in Lena Farr-Morrissey of Coral Grief on bass and vocals, Jordan Mang and Kyle McCollum to beef up the band’s wall of guitars and Daniel Byington on drums.
Keyes’ evolving partnership with Lena Farr-Morrissey seems especially fruitful. The bassist sings and gets a songwriting credit on the dream pop “Window Room,” which doesn’t so much tamp down the band’s obliterating roar and slather it over with icing. It’s loud as hell, but transporting, its woozy blasts of guitar melting down into static and blare as a haunting, chill-inducing vocals wafts idly by.
Spiral XP’s songs are built out of notes pushed to the bending point. The opening lick from “Awake” boings and recoils, the sounds sliding vertiginously off of true. And yet, the verse is mostly murmured, confided, spoken right into your ear. It’s overwhelming volume feels like it’s been delivered just for you, and aren’t you lucky that way?

Dear Dawsongfg,
That’s alright, I get what you’re meaning.
Hm... I never thought of Simon and Ken being similar. Maybe that’s because I grew up with Ken, while Simon I had just brought in. I do feel bad for him regardless.
Maybe Simon just needed to talk to Knightly and express his grief. That’s what happened with Ken. He believed that I was acting like I didn’t care for Sean when I actually did. I was trying to smile for everyone, so I wouldn’t be a burden to anyone. Really, my heart was broken by what happened to Sean. He was my first love after all.
Thankfully, Ken and I did reconcile and he completely regretted his actions after hearing from me that I was keeping everything in for his and everyone else’s sake. Max even decided to decline his marriage to me until everyone knew what would become of Bat. He’s such a gentleman for caring for my feelings over his own.

what I learned from the Italian gp 2024:
- 33 and 44 fans unite against the common enemy (mclaren’s illegally fast car)
- my dislike of carlos sainz has almost completely evaporated in favor of eternally hating on lando norris
- charles wdc is written in the stars it’s coming it’s gonna happen
- max is going to basically light milton keyes and the red bull garage on fire because that’s an atrocious car
- charles and max are basically the only two people who can rely on each other to help them succeed
- i hate james vowles
- vcarb stays in misery
- kevin magnussen has decided to take a week off and generously give his car to the new haas driver, Ollie, for a test drive in baku
#f1#formula 1#charles leclerc#max verstappen#monza gp 2024#italian gp 2024#33 and 44 fans uniting to hate on mclaren was NOT on my bingo card#the mclaren fans hating each other though… i saw that coming#also james vowles i hope your pillow is never cold at night#oliver bearman#also oscar had more wdc winning potential than lando#alex I’m sorry man

"Faerie Tale Theatre" Posthumous Reunion: The Stars' Final Resting Places
Some people might think I'm obsessed with death. A minor hobby of mine is to research celebrities' final resting places, via the website Find a Grave and the YouTube channel Hollywood Graveyard. And I like perusing themed guides to famous graves. For example, Hollywood Graveyard's videos themed to Christmas, Halloween, the cast and crew of The Wizard of Oz, cast and crew members of The Twilight Zone, etc., or Find A Grave's "Posthumous Reunion" pages for famous movie and TV show casts, sports teams, etc.
I decided to create a similar guide for the cast of Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre. Sadly, all too many stars of that cult classic series are no longer with us. Here's a guide (with links to Find a Grave pages) to the various places where those stars are buried, in case anyone here might like to visit a few someday.

State of the Fanfiction
Wanted to talk a bit about fanfics I wrote back in the day and plans for the future. tldr: it's (almost) all weird-ass Simeon Saint rarepairs
Eight years ago, I wrote Simon Says, a way-too-long story about Simon Blackquill's time in prison... which quickly became focused on him dating/breaking up with Simon Keyes. There had been some interest in that pairing, and I liked it myself, but keeping them together felt antithetical to the story's overall message of "Blackquill is OK now and has learned to stop martyring himself for others," and also I not-so-secretly think messy breakups are more fun than successful romances. So that's what I did. Despite that, I'd had a lot of notes at the time about what a sequel might look like, where Keyes got out of prison and had his own redemption arc and became the kind of boyfriend who wouldn't destroy Blackquill's life. But when it came to actually write it, I decided that redemption arcs were boring, scrapped it all, and started working on my bonkers Keyes/Phantom fic where literally the only reason behind the pairing choice was, "Phantom is about as emotionally functional as an animal, so I bet Keyes could train him into being his dog." I wrote two chapters and then wandered away from fandom entirely to try being a functional adult for a while. Now, a whole ass time skip later, being a functional adult sucks ass and AAI2 finally got localized, so here I am again. I ended up reading all my own fanfic -- do you know that if enough years pass, you'll forget enough of what you wrote that reading your own fics feels like finding a new favorite author who made a bunch of shit just for you? Do recommend. And in those fics, I found three stories where I were mad that they hadn't been finished. Did you know that if you're your own new favorite author, you are now burdened with the knowledge that unfinished fics won't be updated unless YOU, YOURSELF update them? Awful. Terrible. Do not recommend. The three fics were: 1. Just Fake it. My post-bad-end Blackbright fic. I should go to jail for not finishing that. (On the bright side, it's what made me hyper-vigilant about backing up my writing, which is why I have the remnants of all the stories on this list at all.) I would like to finish it but I am in the middle of replaying the games and don't want to touch it until I've replayed Dual Destinies. (I am currently on...... Turnabout Big Top. Sigh.) 2. Impostor Syndrome. The aforementioned Keyes/Phantom fic, which I have updated with the new localized names so it is now a Saint/Phantom fic. Although it is currently just "the meandering post-prison adventures of Simeon Saint" fic because I am completely, utterly making this shit up as I go and haven't gotten to the shipping part yet. Does anyone want to read this but me? Trick question, I don't care. I'm basically in a fugue state right now and I don't think I could stop if I wanted. Also we are T-minus-two-chapters to where there will, in fact, be some actual for real Saint/Phantom shipping, so idk hang in there. 3. Simon, Horace, and Miles. The "what if there were no IS-7" AU. This one sucks actually. But I still love the idea of it. There's meat there. But the whole thing needs to be scrapped and restarted from the ground up. Something to consider once Impostor Syndrome is out of my system. Also I would rewrite it to be properly soutamitsu. That's a pairing the world needs more of, damn it. Also I lied, there's a secret fourth one that I never posted anywhere publicly: 4. Fabulous! A Simeon Saint/Max Galactica smut fic I started and then remembered I don't like writing smut. But the setup was pretty good so maybe I'll try again to finish it???

New Video: Spiral XP Shares "120 Minutes" MTV Alt Rock-like "Window Room" @grandstandhq @DangerCoRecs
Back in early 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic caused the world ground down to a halt, singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Max Keyes abandoned a short-lived move to Philadelphia and returned home to Seattle. The false start helped to spark a sort of existential crisis, and he quickly moved back north to Bellingham, WA, where he’d grown up, hoping the sense of home might provide…
