White Dudes for Kamala raised over $4 million on Zoom to defeat Weird Donald and Weirder J.D..
The Ultimate Dude himself, Jeff Bridges, showed up to abide Vice President Harris.
Celebrities, elected officials and political activists jumped on a Zoom call to raise millions for Vice President Kamala Harris’s run for president on Monday evening. By Tuesday morning, the amount raised had hit $4m. The Zoom call featured stars such as Mark Ruffalo, Josh Gad, Sean Astin, Mark Hamill, Josh Groban — and “The Dude” himself, Jeff Bridges. “I was brought to the party not so much as because I’m white, which I certainly am, but because I’m a dude,” the Big Lebowski star said during the call. “I’m white, I’m a dude and I’m for Harris. I’m excited, man.” here were also appearances by elected officials such as North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, former House majority leader Steny Hoyer and Senator Gary Peters of Michigan. Transport secretary and potential Harris VP Pete Buttigieg was also on the call. Many of the attendees took swipes at former president Donald Trump and his running mate JD Vance, seeing it as a chance to push back on sexist attacks about Harris being one of the “childless cat ladies” who runs the country, as well as accusations she was a diversity hire. Organized by Brad Bauman and Ross Morales Rocketto, the Zoom fundraiser is just the latest chapter of Harris’s fundraising blitz ever since President Joe Biden endorsed his running mate to succeed her.
Neglecting white males, especially in the Midwest, by Hillary in 2016 is one of the factors which led to the election of Trump. The Harris campaign and its affiliates don't want to make the same mistake.
Maurice Mitchell, who is Black and the national director of the Working Families Party, hit on a point that was discussed throughout the fundraiser: that white men are a significant chunk of the electorate and Democrats need to get serious about reaching out to them. “White men are a massive part of the electorate and in a close election, a few percentage points can be the difference between having a democracy or not,” Mitchell said. A Pew Research Center study of the 2020 election found that 40 percent of white men voted for Biden, compared to 32 percent who voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016. “I'm not a political scientist or the pollsters, but I know enough to know — and I've seen enough polling results or outcomes in elections to know — that if white males would vote 1 to 2 percent more for Democrats than they usually do, then we win this race,” North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, a longtime friend of Harris’s, said on the call.
At ActBlue, online fundraiser for Democratic candidates and liberal groups, a weekly record of $252,517,168 was raised last week. On just the first two days of this week, $38,800,078 was raised. So we're on track for another $100+ million week. Given the enormous dollops of cash which Weird Donald is getting from Elon Putz and fossil fuel executives, it would be helpful to make every week through Election Day a $100+ million week.

“I’m struck by a few things today, most of which is the power of the invisible role model… Perhaps it’s the newfound clarity I have as a father knowing that my son will always be watching what I do, mimicking my behavior, one day maybe even following in my footsteps.”

Books about Napoleonic era (and Polish history) - 3
Good day, dear all, and let me share with you some books I've read recently.
And because today is the birthday of Tadeusz Kościuszko I'll start with a biography of him The Peasant Prince, by the American historian Alex Storozynski:
2. One more position about the Polish history, in English, I'd like to recommend you is Richard Butterwick's The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, 1733–1795: Light and Flame, dedicated to the reigns of Polish-Lithuanian two last kings, Augustus III Wettin and Stanisław August Poniatowski:
From the topic of Polish history let's switch to the French one.
3. One more addition to my collection of Talleyrand's biographies was this one, written by Robin Harris:
4-5. Then, there were two books about Napoleon's private life, by Octave Aubry and Sigrid-Maria Größing:
6-7. A study on the topic of French revolutionary and imperial generals, by Georges Six, and George Nafziger's Imperial Bayonets. (These were books with lots of military details, so I can't say I've enjoyed them thoroughly, rather not belonging to their target audience))
8. And this is a book I really liked, The anatomy of Glory by Henry Lachouque! And though its subtitle (Napoleon and his Guards) kinda states the book will be focused on the Imperial Guards, in fact its topics turned out much more wider, including information on Napoleon himself, France and even some details of the usual life of that times:
9. The book majority of you have already read, The Iron Marshal, a biography of Louis Nicolas Davout by John Gallaher:
10-11. And the last but not the least - two books on Murat. The first is a book by the French historian Jean Tulard and the second is an impressive work of Sarah Hammel @joachimnapoleon.
Thanks a lot, Sarah, for letting as see Joachim Murat through his letters, from his own point of view!

(Archive) Animated short film of the day: Duck Amuck (1953)
There's something decidedly self indulgent but nevertheless interesting about using entertainment to discuss entertainment itself: Deconstructions, parodies, and in this case, getting meta; one of the most cerebral and fascinating… if done right. When used poorly it becomes a hand wave or a cynical tool to divert attention away of a work's flaws or be patronising to the audience. When used properly though? It can give us an insight on why we love a medium so much. Which is why this short is a landmark for commercial western animation.
While not the first to make use of the concept of an animator directly interacting with the cartoon character, as Disney's Saludos Amigos (1942) already had some of this, it pushed everything about this gag to the limit. The story(loosely using the term) is pretty much just Daffy getting messed with by whoever is animating(take a guess who that turns out to be) to such an extreme at various different points nothing that is identifiable about Daffy stays: The voice? The character design? Both get played with to nigh unrecognizable points to see how much you can take away while still keeping the audience engaged. And engaged it should be, as not only is the work hilarious but also a small but delicious insight of how animation is made.
Well…was.
It's a short made in the 50's, so some of the gags that may have been a little more obvious then would require some clarification for modern viewers. The core of it, though, remains as appealing as it ever was. Looney Toons shorts can be hit and miss in some areas(some having aged horrendously for a plethora of reasons) but when they hit the mark, they're absolute guaranteed classics and this is one of the best for being so bold on it's approach.

All Passion Spent: Episode 3 (1.3, BBC, 1986)
"I realise that he wanted me to enjoy all his beautiful things, but what did he imagine I could do with so much money? I can't believe, Mr. Bucktrout, that he knew what he was doing when he left all this to me."
"In the eyes of the world he has conferred a great benefit on you, Lady Slane."
"I know. I know, but I never wanted anything but to stand aside. Something, it seems, that this world of ours won't allow even at the age of eighty-five."
"Well, even the smallest planet is compelled to circle round the sun."
"Yes, but does that mean that we must all, willy-nilly, circle round wealth, position, possessions? I thought that I had escaped from all those things, Mr. Bucktrout, and now Mr. Fitz... of all people... he pushes me back into the middle of them. What am I to do? What am I to do? I always preferred the works of God to the works of man, because they're given - freely - to anyone who can appreciate them, pauper or millionaire. Does that make sense?"
"It makes perfect sense."
#all passion spent#classic tv#vita sackville west#bbc#1986#martyn friend#peter buckman#wendy hiller#harry andrews#maurice denham#phyllis calvert#graham crowden#jane snowden#john franklyn robbins#david waller#eileen way#hilary mason#antonia pemberton#faith brook#geoffrey bayldon#patrick barlow#and so this gentle period drama winds to its bittersweet close. it's a fine piece of work and allows a wonderful cast to shine#in solid but unshowy roles‚ but it does all feel almost... peculiarly safe and comfortable‚ considering the era and also#considering the reputation of the author. Sackville West's literary work isn't particularly well remembered these days‚ certainly not as#celebrated as her letters or the works she inspired (particularly Woolf's Orlando) and maybe that's a reflection of the lack of anything#really groundbreaking or challenging within her work. but as a narrative this still has value‚ and as an exploration of an older woman's#final bid for self realisation and a kind of freedom it has a central conceit that's still very worthy of exploration and which is still#probably under represented in modern fiction. i enjoyed this quite a lot and it has made me curious to seek out the novel if only to find#out whether that has any more flesh on the bones of the ideas played with here; whether it has a little more bite in its depiction of the#grasping‚ snobbish children Hiller's elderly matriarch has found herself surrounded by in widowhood. an interesting piece
