Pātea Māori Club - Poi E 1983
"Poi E" is a song by New Zealand group Pātea Māori Club off the album of the same name. Released in 1983, the song was sung entirely in the Māori language and featured a blend of Māori cultural practices in the song and accompanying music video, including Māori chanting, poi dancing, and the wearing of traditional Māori kākahu (garments). The song reached number 1 in New Zealand in each of the following three decades.
"Poi E" topped the New Zealand pop charts for four weeks and also became the biggest seller in New Zealand for 1984, outselling all international recording artists. Today the song maintains its status as a cult classic in non-Māori New Zealand, as the group behind it, Pātea Māori Club, was a one-hit wonder. However, for Māori, the song is much more important, as it became "the anthem of a new generation", the generation known as the "hip-hop generation". "Poi E" returned to the NZ Singles Chart in 2009, after being featured in an advertising campaign for Vodafone, accompanied by the release of Poi E (25th Anniversary Edition) in August 2009, an extended version of the album featuring unreleased songs, remixes and live tracks. The song was prominently featured during the final dance sequence of the Taika Waititi film Boy (2010), which led to it re-charting for a third time.
It was written by Māori linguist Ngoi Pewhairangi; the music was scored by Dalvanius Prime. Pewhairangi's intent in writing the song in such a way was to promote Māori ethnic pride among young Māori people in a popular format. The two faced indifference from record labels, so Prime produced the song and album under his self-made label, Maui Records. Without radio play and barely any commercial TV airing, a TV news story is credited with shooting the song up to number 1 on New Zealand charts in March 1984.
In July 2016, a film about the song, Poi E: The Story of Our Song, premiered at the New Zealand International Film Festival.
"Poi E" received a total of 65,8% yes votes!

One week after you passed
i turned the car on, my phone had immediately bluetoothed
The exorcist theme song
I thought that was a cruel joke for you to play… i laughed
And then i sobbed
One month after you passed,
I traveled to Kansas City,
Where i wrote you a note in the Nelson Atkins Art Museum
I drew, walked around and drank not the best cafe lattes.
Two months after you passed,
I drowned my time in a marketing internship.
I photographed, photoshopped, tiktoked, reeled in an audience
But I had a blast being tucked away in a corner of a music venue
Where i listened to music for free
The day I had started that internship was the same day you passed.
How horrible of a door like that to close for another one to open
Three months after you passed,
I traveled back to Maui for my first ever solo trip
I brought you with me to bring you home to the ocean.
No one sat next to me the whole flight.
I saved the empty seat for you.
Four months after you passed,
I performed on stage to raise funds for Lahaina.
We raised over 500 dollars.
The first fundraiser I had done was just prior in October.
You were hospitalized at that point and couldn’t make it
Even though you were just down the street.
Performing isn’t the same without you in the audience
mouthing my words back
Five months after you passed,
I joined a queer leadership institute for the summer.
I made new friends you’d have loved.
I got dad to come to a gay bar for a drag show
You’d never believe that
Six months after you passed,
Was your birthday. I ate cheap sushi, bought you flowers
and had many panic attacks
You should still be here.
7 months after you passed,
I made more friends in the drag scene and the filmmaking scene
I craved creativity to fill this grief
I couldn’t think about you anymore
8 months after you passed,
I made it to my first film festival.
You were on the big screen.
Everyone got to know you and your name
I had horrible sinuses and couldn’t fully take it in
9 months after you passed,
I stopped counting. You never leave my mind.
Your voice, your smile, the night you died. Replays over and over.
I didn’t realize 9 months had passed until
10 months after you passed,
I had missed a whole month of counting.
It’s almost Christmas time
And i hate that I’ve saved so much money
From not buying you gifts.
I bought you many gifts last year
In case it was your last
And it was.
I fucking miss you, mama.
Some Days I can’t do it but I still get out of bed.
I’m still creating viciously. I’m still searching.
I don’t know what.
I look to myself for comfort because your DNA is in me
So i wonder am I really looking for you in others
Or am I just running away from myself?

Moana 2 Breaks Records with a Massive Thanksgiving Box Office Opening
Moana 2 Dominates Thanksgiving Weekend
Disney’s Moana 2, the sequel to the beloved animated classic, made history over the Thanksgiving weekend with an extraordinary $220 million opening in North America. This record-breaking debut marks the largest Thanksgiving weekend opening ever, according to Exhibitor Relations.
The performance of Moana 2 far surpassed the three-day debut of its predecessor, Moana (2016). Originally planned as a direct-to-Disney+ release, the strategic decision to showcase the film in theaters paid off handsomely, delivering incredible results.
Moana 2: An Epic Seafaring Adventure Continues
In Moana 2, the spirited Polynesian heroine Moana, voiced by Auli'i Cravalho, sets out on a daring oceanic quest to break a curse cast by a vengeful god. She is joined by Maui, the once-mighty demigod voiced by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, as they work together to restore a mystical island that once connected the scattered islands of Oceania.
Thanksgiving Weekend Shatters Box Office Records
The Thanksgiving weekend proved to be a monumental success for the North American box office, generating a historic $422 million in revenue. This achievement not only underscores the incredible performance of Moana 2 but also highlights a strong recovery for the film industry during the holiday season.
Wicked: Part I Holds Strong in Second Place
Universal’s Wicked: Part I, the prequel to The Wizard of Oz, maintained its momentum, earning $117 million over the five-day holiday stretch. Its cumulative box office earnings now stand at $262 million in just two weeks.
Starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, Wicked: Part I has reignited enthusiasm for musicals, paving the way for its sequel, Wicked: Part 2, set to debut next year.
Gladiator II Claims Third Spot
Paramount’s Gladiator II secured third place with $44 million in five-day earnings, bringing its two-week total to $111 million. Directed by Ridley Scott, the sequel introduces thrilling new elements, including sharks and baboons in the Roman arena, while showcasing performances by Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, and Denzel Washington.
Other Thanksgiving Box Office Highlights
Fourth Place: Red One (Amazon and MGM) grossed $18.7 million. Starring Dwayne Johnson, the festive comedy follows a North Pole security officer searching for a kidnapped Santa Claus (J.K. Simmons).
Fifth Place: Lionsgate’s The Best Christmas Pageant Ever earned $4.9 million with its heartwarming tale of six misbehaving siblings accidentally landing lead roles in their town’s Christmas play.
The Complete Top 10
Bonhoeffer - $3.2 million
Venom: The Last Dance - $3.1 million
The Wild Robot - $1 million
Heretic - $957,000
A Real Pain - $900,000
Moana 2 Leads a Record-Setting Holiday Season
The phenomenal success of Moana 2 has solidified its status as a family favorite while setting a new benchmark for Thanksgiving box office openings. Alongside hits like Wicked: Part I and Gladiator II, the holiday weekend has delivered a strong boost to the North American box office, reaffirming its vibrant future.

The 2025 Golden Globes took place at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in LA, bringing together Hollywood's biggest names, from Ariana Grande and Cate Blanchett to Dwayne Johnson and Nicole Kidman. Many looked forward to seeing who would win the title of best dressed at this year's Golden Globes. The annual awards ceremony, held at the beginning of January every year, is complex in style. The most sought-after autumn/winter pieces have already been primarily worn after the fashion season ends. Celebrities often make spontaneous choices for the red carpet, as seen at the 82nd Golden Globes, where many aspire to be the best dressed. Dune actress Zendaya, 28, channeled old Hollywood charm in an auburn silk strapless gown by Louis Vuitton, which featured eye-catching diamonds. She donned one of the best outfits at the Golden Globes this year. Zendaya (Jordan Strauss/AP) French-American film star Timothée Chalamet wore a sparkling black suit by Haider Ackermann for Tom Ford. A blue silk scarf, pointed cowboy boots, and silver jewelry complemented the outfit. Timothee Chalamet (Jordan Strauss/AP) Chalamet attended the event with his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner, who wore a stunning metallic Versace dress. Nicole Kidman dazzled fans in a shimmering silver Balenciaga gown. Nicole Kidman (Jordan Strauss/AP) Nominated for her role in the erotic thriller "Babygirl," Kidman stunned in a one-shoulder dress. The dress showcased a low-cut back and a high, Studio 54-inspired ponytail. She ranked among the best-dressed at the Golden Globes. Ariana Grande showcased a vintage Givenchy gold gown and long white opera gloves. Ariana Grande (Jordan Strauss/AP) The 31-year-old Wicked star evoked old Hollywood glamour in her strapless, sequined dress with fine diamond jewelry. Dwayne Johnson chose a playful outfit that reflects his unique style and personality at 52 years old. Dwayne Johnson (Jordan Strauss/AP) Johnson complimented his kid-friendly role as the voice of "Maui" in the Disney film Moana in a lilac silk suit. Cate Blanchett, notably, wore a shimmering custom Louis Vuitton gown; however, she had donned this exquisite piece eight months prior to the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024. Cate Blanchett (Jordan Strauss/AP) The 55-year-old star wore a flowy cape-style dress, accessorized with sparkly earrings, Gianvito Rossi heels, and a sleek bob. Read the full article

The land of outdoor adventures.
Maui: The Valley Isle
Introduction
Maui, known as the "Valley Isle," is the second-largest island in Hawaii. Famous for its stunning landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and vibrant culture, Maui attracts millions of visitors each year. From pristine beaches and lush rainforests to towering volcanoes and charming towns, Maui offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural richness.
Geography and Climate
Maui covers an area of approximately 727 square miles and is characterized by its varied topography. The island is divided into different regions, each with its own unique features:
West Maui: Home to the historic town of Lahaina and the luxurious resorts of Ka'anapali, this region is known for its stunning sunsets and beautiful beaches.
South Maui: Famous for its sunny weather and golden beaches like Wailea and Makena, South Maui is a popular destination for water activities.
East Maui: Dominated by the lush Hana rainforest and the iconic Hana Highway, this region offers a more secluded and natural experience.
Central Maui: The commercial hub of the island, featuring the towns of Kahului and Wailuku, as well as the scenic Iao Valley.
Upcountry Maui: Located on the slopes of Haleakalā, this region is known for its farms, botanical gardens, and the Haleakalā National Park.
Maui's climate varies from region to region but is generally tropical, with warm temperatures year-round. The leeward (western) side is typically dry, while the windward (eastern) side is lush and wet.
Natural Beauty and Attractions
Maui is renowned for its natural attractions, many of which are located in the island's diverse ecosystems:
Haleakalā National Park: Home to the world’s largest dormant volcano, Haleakalā. Visitors can watch the sunrise from the summit, hike through the volcanic landscape, and explore the diverse flora and fauna.
Road to Hana: This scenic drive along the island’s northeastern coast features waterfalls, black sand beaches, and lush rainforests. The journey is as rewarding as the destination, with numerous stops along the way.
Iao Valley State Monument: Known for the Iao Needle, a towering rock formation, and the lush, verdant valley that surrounds it.
Ka'anapali Beach: A popular resort area with a beautiful sandy beach, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and enjoying the sunset.
Molokini Crater: An underwater volcanic crater located off the coast, renowned for its clear waters and vibrant marine life, making it a prime spot for snorkeling and diving.
Adventure and Activities
Maui is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and offers a wide range of activities:
Water Sports: Snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, windsurfing, and paddleboarding are popular due to the island's clear waters and abundant marine life.
Hiking: Trails range from easy coastal walks to challenging hikes through Haleakalā’s crater and the lush forests of East Maui.
Whale Watching: During the winter months, humpback whales migrate to Maui’s warm waters, providing an unforgettable experience for visitors.
Golf: Maui boasts world-class golf courses with stunning ocean views and challenging layouts.
Cultural Heritage
Maui’s rich cultural heritage is evident in its historical sites, festivals, and local traditions:
Lahaina: Once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom, Lahaina is now a historic town with museums, art galleries, and cultural sites.
Hawaiian Luaus: Traditional feasts featuring Hawaiian music, hula dancing, and local cuisine offer a glimpse into the island’s culture.
Festivals: Events like the Maui Film Festival, Aloha Festivals, and the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s performances celebrate the island’s artistic and cultural diversity.

Today is my mama’s first heavenly birthday. She would’ve been 62 today. And while it hasn’t quite hit me yet like it did last week, my gift to my mom this year is the short film LEONA.
A few months ago, I participated in a writing workshop led by Emily Lang. Writing was needed for me at the time and I was so gracious of the whole writing groups compassion for the work I wrote.
The task was to write a eulogy… fitting.
We had a celebration of life and let people come and go but I never got to express my grief for my mother.
I wrote this eulogy as a hope to just capture a piece of my love for my mom. I made this film to capture just a piece of admiration for my mom. She was the closest person to me and my number 1 just like I was hers.
I started working on this short film a few days after she passed in February. I had to get my intense feelings out somehow someway and after attending the Fleur Film Festival I knew what I had to do.
Most of this footage is taken from my personal time on Maui back in April mixed with connections of my mom’s life on Maui, her home, our home ft Tori Nelson and my collaboration song A Hui Hou
Happy birthday mama. I adore you forever. 💜💜💜
