With a respiratory infection, Pope Francis is in the hospital

In order to treat a respiratory infection, Pope Francis will be hospitalised for "a few days," the Vatican announced on Wednesday, raising questions about the 86-year-old pontiff's health. In a statement, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said that Pope Francis had recently complained of respiratory issues and that this afternoon he had visited Policlinico A. Gemelli in Rome for some medical examinations. The results of these revealed a respiratory infection, which will need a few days of suitable inpatient medical therapy. Pope Francis is moved by the numerous letters he has received and thanks everyone for their prayers and closeness, Bruni continued. Francis was brought to the hospital after his weekly general audience in St. Peter's Square to undergo a series of tests. The Vatican had announced the visit and testing earlier in the day. Bruni had stated that the Holy Father had been in Gemelli since this afternoon for a few previously scheduled tests. He then announced that Francis' Thursday agenda had been freed "to make space for the continuation of examinations should that be necessary," shortly after. According to a statement released on Wednesday by the presidency of the Italian Episcopal Conference on behalf of the country's bishops, bishops in churches all around Italy are praying for Francis' quick recovery. When physicians warned him last year that he could also have to postpone a trip to Canada unless he consented to have 20 additional days of therapy and rest for his knee, he cancelled a trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. In the end, he visited South Sudan and the DRC in February. Francis has diverticulitis, a common illness that can result in intestinal inflammation or infection. He had surgery to have a portion of his colon removed in 2021. Francis disclosed in December that he had previously signed the resignation letter that would be used if he ever became "impaired." Francis made the remark in response to a question on what would happen if a pope were to suddenly become unable to carry out his duties due to illness or an accident in an interview with Spanish news network ABC. Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, who retired as Vatican Secretary of State in 2013, received the letter from Francis, who claimed to have written it several years ago. "I've already put my renunciation in writing. Tarcisio Bertone served as the Secretary of State at the time. "If I should become incapacitated for any reason, whether medical or another, here is my renunciation," I wrote when I signed the document. It was reported that Francis said, adding that this was the first time he had mentioned the letter in public. Paul VI and Pope Pius XII, according to Francis, had also written their letters of renunciation in the case of a permanent incapacity. Pope Benedict XVI, Francis' immediate predecessor, shocked the Catholic world in 2013 by announcing his resignation from the role of pontiff and claiming "advanced age" as the reason. Since roughly 600 years ago, a pope hadn't resigned before. Ognuno di noi ha sicuramente un ricordo legato ad una delle loro canzoni, per me erano diversi, il più vecchio forse è quello di mamma e suoi dischi di Battisti ma anche la prima volta che ho sentito ‘Com'è profondo il mare’ e le nottate passate a suonare le loro canzoni alla chitarra. Ho voluto lavorare ad una composizione allegorica, quasi rinascimentale, i due posano in mezzo ai campi e le galline in un contesto popolare lontano dai luoghi della celebrità. In terra una coperta e la natura morta di un pic nic e sparsi nell'immagine degli easter egg e riferimenti alle loro canzoni».
