That was totally spontaneous. I bought a second-hand Pilot Barbie 1999, got rid of her damaged body and put the head on Made to Move body. The skin tone match isn't perfect but I don't mind. I've always thought that particular Barbie with Mackie mold resembles Harry Makepeace from "Dempsey & Makepeace" so yeah, it will be my own Sgt. Makepeace. I intend to give her some 80s clothes and props. Meanwhile, that jacket belonging to Jazzie is the most 80s looking piece I have for my 1/6 dolls. Of course my pretty detective needs a gun and badge but I didn't have time to prepare them in advance. The motorcycle belongs to Flavas doll and I used it just for this one photoshoot. Some time ago I got second-hand Flavas dolls Tre and Kiyoni but without a motorbike. Last week I managed to buy the bike and I really like it despite all the scratches and loose mirrors.
That's what the doll and the bike looked like when I got them. I had no intention of keeping the doll's original body so I really didn't mind buying it damaged. The bike is in decent condition and so is my Tre. I just need to give Tre a wig or something 'cause his flocked hair is almost gone.

These flavas dolls are some interesting looking characters.
If you showed these to me with no context, I would assume they were knock off Kens, not anything actually produced by mattel.
They certainly were committed to the look though.

About
Casual doll collector. I barely know what I'm doing.
I want to collect at least 1 of each fashion doll brand. Especially early 2000's ones. There's plenty so I don't count knockoffs (unless they're really interesting....)
If you ever look for info like
-do X doll clothes fit Y doll
-measurements
-doll id (try google lens first tho!)
-size comparisons
then feel free to poke me after checking the list below (cause you'll know what dolls I got)
If there are any dolls you find interesting and aren't on the list, share, I wanna see :3
(Also, personal posts are tagged as #rustyspots)

Before there was the Wild Hearts Crew, there were Flavas. First released in 2003, these dolls didn't last long on the shelves because Mattel had to pull them due to so many people complaining about their hip hop theme. I still have my collection from all those years ago, 100% complete right down to the tattoos meant to go on their clothes that I never used. :D So with a new month comes a new doll diorama! I'm showcasing this series (this is the first wave; I have sporadic dolls of the other waves but this is the only complete one I have) because I thought it was time to show them some love again. The crew is busy with their spray paint, giving those plain brick walls some character. Why? Because their boxes were literally covered in graffiti, and that back wall has the official logo and their names from their boxes, plus the heart from their Street Rod (I have it, but it won't fit in there with all the dolls lol). I also made all the little spray paint cans, and I finally got them right! The hardest part was making the lids because they had to fit on the cans just right in order to be removed if desired, as can be seen because some dolls are holding the cans without the lids. So without further ado, let's welcome the Blast from the Past - the Flavas crew!
Left to right: Kiyoni Brown, TIka, P. Bo, Liam, Tre', and Happy D.
Kiyoni Brown, TIka, P. Bo, and Liam
Tre’ and Happy D
P. Bo is dancing! This is one of the first lines of dolls Mattel made that featured different heights/shapes for bodies. Yes the ladies are all skinny, but each has a different shape to her. Tika, for instance, has one hip extended outward to make it look like she's dancing. Happy D is the shortest of the group while P. Bo is the tallest.
Kiyoni Brown
Tika is putting the finishing touches on her name!
Looks like Liam is also enjoying the music!

There was interest in the Flavas dolls recently, due to their odd-shaped bodies. Kiyoni is unique enough on her own that I’d be hesitant to disassemble her.

I absolutely love this article. As the title suggests, it outlines 14 strategies Mattel applies to flailing doll lines in an attempt to revive them, or squeeze out a few last dollars before they take their last dying gasps. Lines discussed are Polly Pocket, Diva Starz, Myscene, Flavas, Monster High, Ever After High, American Girl, and of course, Barbie

The 00′s doll wars were some fierce shit. MGA Bratz vs Mattel Barbie
so for 42 or so years Barbie was that bitch in the fashion doll world no one could come for her. There were like other fashion dolls lines that came out like Polly Pocket and the UK’s Sindy doll and she did okay but she wasn’t touching Barbie.
Then in 2001 came the Bratz Dolls
youtube
Bratz were these big eyed big lipped ethnic dolls that really shook the table and they became super popular. Like I remember if you had a Bratz doll back in the day you were really that girl, everyone had a Barbie but like if you had a Brat my god wow. Princess Barbie’s dream house was boring now.
I remember there was some people and parents that didn’t like them either and would compare them to Barbie’s supposed “wholesomeness” people said the Bratz dolls were trashy looking, they were low rent, people called them “hoodrat dolls” “ghetto” I remember someone called them “hooker dolls” because they wore leopard print and had feather boas
As if Barbie never had feather boas either or wore leopard print
This always made me laugh because as a child that loved doing research projects I found out that Barbie came from the German Bild Lilli doll and was like a sexy goldigger character.
So yeah. Since Bratz was coming for Barbie, Mattel was like fuck it and released dolls that looked quite similar with their big eyes and big lips and funky clothes MyScene
youtube
I don’t know how well they did in toy sales but we all were on that my scene website. But because Bratz were more ethnic and down, with the urban hip hop flava. Mattel was like “we can be down too, we can get with the hippity hop we got bling bling
Then 2003 they came out with Flavas. I wonder how much Craig David got paid
youtube
I suggest going to youtube to see the old interviews with the ceos of Barbie and Bratz because these men are proper being shady with each other it’s funny
Bratz: That old bitch needs to sit down and retire.
Barbie: Bitch you will never be glamour
I think Barbie ended up winning the war because Mattel refused to merge with MGA so yeah...
Also shout out to Diva Starz that came out in 2000 before Bratz I don’t know the story on whether this was pushed out to compete with Bratz or if a former Mattel worker took this design and perfected when they went to MGA but I’m sure it came up during the many lawsuits that happened between MGA and Mattel
youtube
The only think I remember about Diva starz was that MC Lyte voiced the Black one Tia

Remember when Bratz came out and Mattel felt so threatened that they started giving Barbie trendy clothes, made Flavas (and quickly discontinued them) and then made My Scene.
Pretty sure they're doing that again with that Barbie BMR 1959 line, wild hearts crew and creatable world lol
