Fandom/Characters: Chicago Fire - Matt Casey x Fem!Reader, Sylvie Brett, Stella Kidd, Kelly Severide, Blake Gallo, Wallace Boden, Christopher Herrmann, Joe Cruz, Darren Ritter
Word Count: 3.5k
Summary: You and Matt Casey had been secretly dating for a while, and it had gone smoothly since you worked at different firehouses. However, you were offered a job at 51 which despite seeming like a great idea, only made everything complicated.
Warnings: hurt/comfort, a bit of angst, a bunch of fluff, pet names, mention of anxiety, protective matt, kissing, happy ending
a/n: my first fic!!!!! (on tumblr that is lol) i used to write a lot on another platforms but haven't written for fun in forever (other than for school, ew lol.) so i might be a bit rusty so just yk excuse that until i get back into my flow :) anyways i hope you guys like it <3
For the last three years, you've been working as a paramedic at Firehouse 20 alongside Violet Mikami. During that time, you've come to know Blake Gallo as a result of his on-and-off relationship with her. Although he's a great guy, what made him even greater is the person he introduced you to about a year agoâ your boyfriend, Captain Matthew Casey of Firehouse 51.
Where could you possibly start? His mesmerizing, smile and his charming personality drew you in in an instant. You never realized how the occasional encounters, transformed into intimate late-night conversations. And before you knew it, those late-night talks grew into romantic dinners and memorable dates.
After months of both of you dancing around one another, he finally masked up the courage to ask you to be his girlfriend. Without a moment's hesitation, you instantly said yes.
Six months have passed since then. Both of you had mutually decided to keep it private for some time in order to prevent any interference with your jobs. The only individuals who had known were your respective Chiefs, just in case something happened.
Your Chief also knew you could handle a busier station such as 51. So, he had just offered you the vacant paramedic position that was left after Foster left for Med School.
Initially, you were excited about the offer because it meant working with your boyfriend. However, now you're uncertain about accepting it as you're not sure how heâd react. While you believe he'd be as thrilled as you are, there's this nagging feeling that it would complicate things.
So you decided to call him.
"Hey Matt," You said once he picked up.
"Hi babe, everything okay? You rarely call me during shift." He replied, voice laced with concern.
"Yeah, yeah, everything's fine." You assure him before nervously adding, "It's just... I have something to run by you...â
"Go ahead sweetheart, what's up?"
"You know how Foster left and ever since then there's been an open paramedic spot at 51 for a while now?"
He hums encouraging you to continue.
"Well, my Chief spoke to Boden and they both agreed that I could fill that spot if I wanted to."
"That's fantastic news!" He said excitedly. "Do you want to?"
You sighed. "I do want to. I think it would be nice to work with you and the experience of working at a busier station? That would benefit me, by a lot. Iâd be able to learn so much."
"Then what's there to run by me? This is your decision Y/N." Matt questioned.
"It's your house! I don't want to interfere with the little family you all have built and make things complicated considering we'd be working together while dating and what if they take it the wrong way thinking I only got the spot because I'm with you-"
"Hey! Y/N, sweetheart, breathe." He says cutting off your rambling, trying to calm you down.
"What?" you ask, voice exasperated.
"Baby, no one's going to think anything like that. You're an amazing paramedic and you earned your spot because you're good at your job. Also, no one knows that we're together so they won't suspect a thing. We don't even have to tell them yet if you don't want to.â He said reassuringly before continuing, âAnd you wouldn't be interfering with anything, I can assure you that we'd all love to have you at 51. This is completely your choice though, so whether you want to transfer over here or not, you have my full support, regardless of what you decide."
You smile at Matt's words. "Thank you." You pause for a moment before resuming happily, "Okay I'm going to go tell Chief that I'm accepting the position! I'll talk to you later Matt."
"That's my girl." He says smiling before hanging up.
You swiftly head to your Chief's office and let him know that you completed the transfer paperwork and are ready to begin at 51 as soon as possible. He nods, smiling, and assures you that he will push the request forward.
It was now Monday. Which also happened to be the same day you started your first shift as the new paramedic of Firehouse 51.
God were you nervous.
You had spoken to Matt multiple times and he continuously reassured you that you had no reason to feel anxious because everyone would adore you. So why were you still panicking?
Matt liked you, Gallo liked you, and so did Boden after the short interview you two had.
You had also heard a lot about each of them through Matt, and they all sounded like wonderful people. So the odds of your new coworkers welcoming you with open arms were pretty high.
Yet despite your best efforts, you couldn't shake the feeling of anxiety that was coursing through your veins, leaving you a nervous wreck.
You let out a sigh, trying to calm your nerves as you approached the Firehouse. You bumped into Gallo on the way which instantly relieved your worries. Seeing a familiar face put your mind at ease, melting your fears away, even if itâs only for a moment.
The two of you engaged in an easy conversation as you walked into the building together.
Upon entering, you spotted a table near the rigs with several individuals seated around it. Gallo eagerly ushered you towards them, quickly introducing everyone.
"Squad, this is Y/N Y/L/N, our new paramedic!" He said as you smiled, waving at them.
Gallo then pointed at a tan, blue-eyed man who was sitting at the head of the table. "That's Lieutenant Kelly Severide. Head of Squad and those are his Squad members."
He quickly got up and shook your hand. "Nice to meet you Y/L/N."
You recognized him now. He was Matt's best friend, they'd been through thick and thin together. It was sweet actually, finally getting to put a face to the name you've been hearing so much about.
Gallo took his time introducing you to the other members of Squad, all of whom greeted you with kindness and respect.
As he slipped into conversation with them, you took the opportunity to excuse yourself and find your partner, Sylvie Brett, who youâd be spending most of your time with.
She stood out easily, being one of only two women in the house. You spotted her in the kitchen, chatting with another girl who you figured must be Stella, Severide's girlfriend. Matt had spoken to you about how amazing they were as a couple, and it always made you happy to hear about them. With a deep breath, you made your way over to them.
"Hi!" You smiled. "I'm the new paramedic here working with... Sylvie Brett?" You ask unsurly, turning your head to glance at the blonde hoping you're right.
"Yes, that's me! Hi!" She answered enthusiastically, hugging you. Matt had mentioned how sweet she was but the embrace still caught you by surprise. Regardless, you hugged her back, accepting the kind gesture. Once you pulled away you waved at the other woman who smiled back at you, introducing herself as Stella Kidd.
After conversing with them for some time and getting to know one another, you headed off to the officer quarters with the hope of seeing your boyfriend.
Once you approached the office that was referred to Matt Casey, you knocked.
"Come in." You heard so you stepped inside, closing the door behind you.
"Hi baby," You said, smiling at him. He looked up from his desk, features softening as he noticed you.
"How's my favorite girl doing?" He asked standing up to give you a brief kiss on the cheek.
"I'm great! Everyone here is so nice and fun to talk to. They've all been so welcoming." You answered excitedly.
"See, I told you everyone would love you. What's there not to?" He asked rhetorically, making you smile as he placed his hands on your waist pulling you in closer. Matt's inability to keep his hands to himself never fails to make you laugh. It was all quickly forgotten though when he drew you in for a more passionate kiss when he noticed that there weren't any prying eyes on you.
As time passed, days turned into weeks, and before you knew it, you had seamlessly become a part of them. Each member of the group welcomed you with open arms, and it felt like you had found your place within the close-knit family they had formed at 51. It seemed like you had found a lasting bond and a sense of belonging with everyone there, envisioning a permanent future among them.
You became good friends with Sylvie and Stella, established a nice mentorship with Hermann, and created a sibling-like bond with Severide.
Most importantly though, to your knowledge, no one had suspected your relationship with Matt.
You wanted to say something, you really did. You didn't want him to think you were ashamed of being with him. But you didn't want the people you had grown so close to to think that you were only offered the position because of your relationship with him; even if you were confident that they weren't the type of people to believe that.
It was an ordinary day. You and Sylvie had just returned from responding to a callâ nothing too serious, just tending to a man who had been cut by a broken mirror. Together with Sylvie, you bandaged him up and sent him to Med for stitches, wishing him a speedy recovery.
You were restocking the ambulance when Sylvie spoke up, "So, did you see the way that guy looked at you?"
You almost choked on your spit at her statement, not expecting it. "How did he look at me?"
"Oh c'mon- there were literally hearts in his eyes every time you spoke up while bandaging him!" She exclaimed a bit too loudly making you shush her.
"Who had hearts in his eyes?" Matt chimed in as he walked up to you and Brett, joining your conversation.
"No one," You say brushing him off but Sylvie interjects. "This guy we were helping earlier, he totally had the hots for our new paramedic over here." She said, nudging you with her arm in a teasing manner.
"Oh, did he?" Matt asked in a tone that sounded like he was joking but you could see the way his body tensed.
"It's whatever, nothing serious. It's not like I'm going to go on a date with him." You roll your eyes trying to dismiss the situation.
"You should!" Sylvie replies happily, "You're pretty and single. He wasn't bad on the eyes either, if you know what I mean. Go have some fun girl! Who knows, he could be the love of your life." She adds, winking.
Matt gave a half-hearted smile and walked away without acknowledging Brett, leaving her looking up in confusion. "What was that about?" She asked.
"No idea," You say shortly, despite knowing exactly what was going on.
Matthew Casey was jealous.
It was quite surprising because he had never shown signs of being the jealous type. In the past, if another man approached you in his presence, he would politely ask them to leave you alone, making it clear that you were already taken. Or heâd simply put his arm around you in a protective, not-so-friendly manner, letting everyone know that you were his. It never bothered you. You found it cute, actually.
But this? This was different. He had never acted this way, which concerned you.
After you were done restocking the ambo you made your way to his office, hoping to ease the tension.
You sighed as you knocked, hearing a quick come-in before stepping inside. You noticed he had his head buried in paperwork, not even acknowledging you as you came in.
"Matt, honey, what's wrong?" You asked, worried when he still didn't look up at you. You waited for a moment before continuing once he didn't reply, "Baby talk to me."
He sighs before finally looking into your eyes. His ocean blues never failed to make you weak in the knees. So intimidating but beautiful nevertheless.
"I don't want to keep this a secret any longer." He eventually replied, motioning between the two of you.
"I don't want to either but you know we can't."
"Why can't we?" He said, tone a bit sharp, causing you to flinch for a second.
"Because-" you were cut off by a knock on Matt's door making you straighten up.
"Sorry to interrupt, but there's someone here to see you Y/N." Said Severide as he poked his head into Casey's office letting you know before heading out.
You quickly glance at Matt sighing before leaving his office, silently apologizing. You hated leaving mid conversation but this could be important. You noticed him trailing behind you as you walked out but chose not to comment on it.
Once you were outside, you recognized him as the man you had sent to Med earlier. The same man who had 'the hots' for you apparently, according to Brett.
This was going to be a long conversation.
"Hello!" He said, way too ecstatic for someone who had just been discharged from a hospital.
"Hi there, how are you feeling?" You asked, keeping the conversation polite.
"Better thanks to you, you saved my life."
"Oh, you know, no big deal! Just doing my job."
"Well, I was hoping to take you out on a date as a way of saying thank you." He said with confidence, catching you off guard.
"I'm very flattered sir but you don't need to thank me, let alone take me out on a date. I'm happy to help, love what I do." You say, hoping that gets rid of him.
By now, you were fully aware that most of the members of the firehouse were watching the interaction occur from behind you. Hence why you were aiming to wrap it up as soon as possible.
"No, no, I insist. We'll have a great time together!" He pushes.
"Like I said, thanks for the offer but I'm going to have to decline. Feel better." You say, turning around.
Before you had a chance to walk away, he grabbed your wrist harshly. Pulling you backward, making you lose your balance, and almost causing you to fall.
"Woah woah woah-" "Back off!" You hear the men hurriedly interject pushing him away from you before Matt yells, in a tone that sends shivers down your spine. "Get your hands off of my paramedic before I call the authorities. You have no right to touch her, especially after she said no."
Boden hears the commotion and steps out of his office. "What's going on over here?"
"This man put his hands on Y/N after she rejected him Chief. He was just leaving though weren't, you?" Matt replies, glaring at the man making him quickly walk away.
The second that he was out of sight, everyone turned to you. Stella speaks up, "Are you okay?"
"Don't worry guys, I'm fine." You say looking around at all of them, reassuring them that you're okay. "Thanks for the help. I'm sure he won't be coming back any time soon, especially after the way Casey glared at him." You add chuckling, trying to lighten the tense atmosphere around you.
"You'd almost think you guys were dating with the way he attacked him to defend you," Severide commented casually, using a tone that sounded like he knew something. Which you decided to ignore for the time being.
At the mention of your boyfriend though, you looked up hoping to catch a glimpse of him but noticed he was nowhere to be found which alarmed you.
As the crowd dispersed and engaged in their own conversations, you discreetly slipped away and made your way to visit Matt in his quarters, marking this as your second visit there in the last half hour.
This time though, you didn't even bother knocking and simply walked in.
When he noticed it was you, he quickly stood up concerned, âAre you okay? Did he hurt you?â
âOh, I'm alright. Don't worry, it was nothing I hadn't dealt with before in this line of duty, you know how men can be sometimes.â You answered, nonchalantly.
You both stayed quiet for a moment, not knowing what to say. Finally, you decided to break the silence, âI'm sorry, Matt. I don't want to argue with you, so if it'll make you happy, we can go tell them right now.â
He sighed, turning around in his chair to look at you, âY/N, this isn't just up to me, weâre in this relationship together. We have to make decisions like these as a team. I love you and I want everyone to know that but if you're not taking this seriously and want to go on that date instead then-â
âNo! This is serious to me Matt, I love you and you know that.â You cut him off before he's able to finish the sentence. âI have eyes for you and only you, no one else matters to me but you, Matthew Casey.â You add firmly, making sure he understands that.
âThen whatâs the issue here?â He asks, tired of the constant back and forth you've been having today.
You sigh and sit down on the edge of his bed before replying, âI just- I've become so close to everyone here in the last few weeks and I don't want their opinion of me to change after they find out that you and I are together. I don't want them to think that I'm only here because of you.â
âBabyâŠâ He says in a softer tone, getting out of his seat to come sit next to you.
You don't look at him once he's sat beside you, opting to look at the floor instead.
âHey, look at me.â He gently says taking your hands in his, grabbing your attention.
You hum as you bring your eyes up to meet his.
When he's sure you're not going to look away, he starts speaking, âListen to me, everyone here? They're the most amazing and supportive group of people you'll ever meet. They won't dare say anything of the sort because they'd be beyond happy for us. And if they slightly even think about it, I won't hesitate to go all âCaptainâ on them.â He says, making you chuckle.
âBesides, I don't want idiots like that guy who can't take no for an answer, hurting you again for a nonexistent chance of taking you out.â He adds.
You lean forward, pressing your forehead against his, and after a moment passes, you mutter a simple, âOkay.â
âOkay?â Matt questions.
âYeah, okay, letâs tell them.â You reply, nodding enthusiastically.
âI want everyone to know that this handsome man right here,â You say pointing at his chest with a teasing tone, âIs of the market and mine only.â
âYeah?â He grins.
âMhm,â You say with an even bigger smile, before leaning in to press your lips against his.
As your lips finally touch, a wave of stillness washes over you. It feels as though the entire world has come to a halt and all that exists is the shared connection between the two of you. At that moment, nothing else matters except for the feeling of his lips against yours.
His delicate hand caresses your face, making you smile into the kiss as you pull him in closer, wrapping your arms around his neck. There's no need to hide your love for each other anymore, allowing your affection for one another to be expressed freely without the fear of secrecy. The rush of emotion flowing through you is intoxicating and God, it is an exhilarating feeling, one that you had never felt before.
Before the kiss could progress any further, you heard cheering outside making you pull away. You glance out the window to understand what the fuss is about when you notice that the blinds were left open, meaning that all of 51 just saw you kissing Matt.
Your cheeks flush with warmth, causing you to bury your face in Matt's shoulder as he laughs at your reaction. He wraps his arm around you, pulling you closer in a tight embrace.
You look up at him, mouthing an âI love you,â
He whispers back, âI love you too.â
He quickly leans in for one more peck against your lips, before bracing himself for all the questions you're about to receive once you head outside.
âYou guys were betting on us?â You asked amused, raising your eyebrows at the exchange of money happening right in front of your eyes.
âWell, what were we supposed to do!?â Cruz exclaimed defensively, earning a giggle from you.
âI mean, we all knew you guys were head over heels for each other, that was obvious. We just didn't realize you had been together prior to all of this.â Added Ritter, shrugging.
âI can speak for everyone though when I say that we are all very happy for you two.â Said Herrmann, making everyone nod in agreement.
As soon as the initial stage of shock died down, Stella and Sylvie rushed over to you, enveloping you in a group hug, requesting all the juicy details. While Kelly simply gave Matt a supportive pat on the back, smiling at his best friend.
Soon, the questions regarding your relationship began pouring in. Matt drew you closer, wrapping his arm around your waist as he answered each of them one by one. You rested your head on his shoulder, closing your eyes briefly, basking in the serenity.
And at last, you found yourself finally feeling at ease. Your family knew, and they were happy for you. Which is all you could ask for.

Safe Space
Pairing: Matt Casey x Reader
Requested: no
Summary: After a bad day, Y/N returns home to her very own safe space.
Word Count: 800+
Tags/Warnings: fluff
A/N: Written for my best girl @seatsbythepit, I hope you like this!
MATT CASEY MASTERLIST
Days like these were the worst.
It was bad enough youâd had to cover for people who werenât pulling their own weight in the team. But of course, like they said, bad things came in threes. At least it was never just one thing.
Everything that seemed to go wrong, did. Then, there came the finger pointing, the backstabbing, and your bossâ yelling.
You were practically drained by the time the office was emptying out.
Yet, the universe didnât seem to be ready to let you off for the day.
Youâd passed a cafe on your way back, grabbing an ice cream on a whim, hoping that your mood would have improved by the time you saw Matt that evening. You werenât crazy about ending the day on a less than happy note, and you hated making Matt feel down with you as well.
Youâd just taken two steps down the street with the ice cream in your hand when a guy had rushed past, practically crashing into you.
The force sent you stumbling at least three steps backward, and youâd barely managed to stay upright but your ice cream had ended up top down on the street.
âWould you at least watch where youâre going!â The guy yelled.
On any other day you might have ignored him, but youâd had more than enough unreasonable people in your face for the day.
âYou bumped into me.â You responded, keeping your voice as even as you could. âAnd thatâs my ice cream you knocked out of my hand.â
The man glared at you, flashing a rude sign at you and muttering about how you were lucky he was in a rush before he continued his way down the street.
That only served to worsen your mood but you headed home anyway, feeling the fatigue of the day start to hit you.
You stood outside the door of the apartment you shared with Matt for just a minute. You werenât sure if Matt was already home. He wasnât on shift today but heâd been working on a construction project and hadnât been sure of his timing.
Just in case, you steadied your emotions as best as you could before you opened the door.
Matt was indeed home, and he heard you the moment the door opened.
âHey babe!â You heard his voice first, before he appeared before you, leaning in to give you a welcome home kiss. âYouâre a little later than usual.â
You smiled back at Matt, feeling your emotions stabilize a little just by seeing him standing in front of you. âYeah, I just took a little detour to pick up some things.â
Your words sounded lame as you heard them, but even so, you thought youâd handled it pretty well, considering.
Matt, however, seemed to pick up on everything. The look in your eyes, the tone in your voice, or the smile that didnât fully reach your eyes.
Matt's brows furrowed, just a little. âY/N?â
You werenât sure what it was that caused the prick of tears. Maybe it was the soft tone of Mattâs voice, or just the fact that Matt was standing right in front of you.
âYeah, IâmâŠâ You couldnât even finish your sentence before Matt pulled you into his arms, your face fitting snugly into his shoulder.
That was all it took before you were a mess, the frustrations of the day seeming to flow out with each tear that soaked into Mattâs shirt.
Matt didnât ask you anything, merely holding you tight against him.
When your shoulders stopped shaking, Matt spoke, âWeâve got pasta and I can pop out the wine that Kelly brought the last time he was here.â
You smiled through the residual tears. âSounds perfect.â
Thatâs how you and Matt ended up on the couch after the meal, the plates forgotten in the dishwasher as you cuddled into his side. The television was on, but you werenât really paying attention, your head laying on Mattâs chest, close enough that you could hear the regular thump of his heart.
âYou want to talk about it?â Matt asked quietly, adjusting the quilt heâd draped over you earlier.
You shrugged but told him anyway, starting to feel a little stupid about your mini meltdown.
âItâs not really a big deal, I donât know whyâŠâ
âHey.â Matt interrupted you. âIf it's a big deal to you, it's a big deal."
You didnât say anything, merely scooting closer.
Mattâs arm tightened around you. âBut Iâm glad you know Iâm here. No matter what.â
Thatâs when it hit you, the realization of what had caused the onslaught of tears. The only place you could let go, be yourself and allow your emotions to take over was your safe place.
âThank you Matt.â You whispered quietly, almost to yourself.
Matt pressed a kiss to the crown of your head. âI love you too.â He responded.
This was indeed your very own safe place - Matthew Casey.

ââ âReady big bro? Bodenâs about to carve the turkey,â You asked, leaning on Kellyâs doorframe.
âIâll be right there, just finishing this run sheet.â
âBetter hurry up, you know how Boden likes everyone to watch his magic.â
A small chuckle left your mouth as you walked towards Mattâs quarters.
âTurkey time, Baby,â you smiled, leaning over to give him a secretive peck on the lips.
âIâm ready for another kinda time,â he smirked.
âNot right now baby, Bodenâs waiting, something about turkey magic.â You pulled him away from his desk and practicality dragged your husband to the common room.
âCasey, Severide, finally,â Boden groaned, âwhereâs the other Severide?â
âI told Kelly it was chow time just a m-â
You were cut off by your brother slipping in behind you and taking a seat at the table.
âLetâs eat before these damn bells go off,â Boden announced.
As the firehouse passed around the bowls and platters of the thanksgiving feast truck prepared, Matt couldnât help, but keep smirking in your direction.
âSeveride,â Joe called out.
Both you and Kelly popped your heads up from your plates.Â
âWhich one?â Kelly joked.
âPIC Severide. Pass the potatoes.â
You passed the potatoes as Matt kept smirking in your direction.
As the firehouse finished their meals, you called out, âsquadâs on dish duty, right?â
âThanksgiving doesnât count, thatâs a team sport,â Capp argued.
âI say it still counts,â Joe smiled, getting up from his seat.
âWorks for me,â Herrmann announced, pushing away from the table.
Truck and Engine, along with you and Shay quickly left the common room as to not be recruited to dry what seemed like millions of dishes.
âGot a minute,â you asked Matt, a devilish grin across your face.
âHell yeah Iâve got a minute.â
Pulling you into his quarters, he closed the blinds and locked the door behind you as you pulled him into a very passionate make out session. Your hands in each others hair giving you flashbacks to you at 16 with the boy down the road.
With you pulling his shirt off and him pulling off yours, you were fully in the not safe for work category. You were unbuttoning your pants as there was a knock on the door.Â
You quickly threw your shirt back on and through the blinds, you could tell the shadow on the other side of the door belonged to your brother.Â
âCasey, you seen my sister?â He knocked.
Matt panicked and threw on his shirt and opened the door before you could tell him he put it out inside out.
Kelly looked at Mattâs shirt and the flushed look on your face.
âWell arenât you two celebrating the life of that bird?â He shook his head.
âWhatâs up Kelly?â You asked, attempting to fix your hair.
âBoden wanted to see you, but itâs not urgent if you want to get back to what you were doing.â
Fixing yourself up, you walked out of Mattâs quarters, only to hear Kelly laugh behind you.
âYouâre doing it at the firehouse now?â He chuckled.
âWe didnât do anything, you interrupted us,â Matt fired back.
You were just out of earshot now, so you couldnât hear them, but when you looked over your shoulder, you could tell they hadnât changed topics.
Just as you were reaching the bullpen, dispatch announced your next call, âAmbulance 61, Truck 81, Squad 3, car accident, 555 West Halstead.â
You turned around and started your jog towards the app floor. Shay was already in the drivers seat when you got there, pulling 61 into the street before you could even get your seat belt on.
About two minutes before the accident site, you hit traffic. Heavy, After-dinner, thanksgiving traffic. Lights, horns and sirens werenât enough to make traffic move even an inch.
â61 how far out are you?â Matt called over the radio.
âTwo minutes, but weâve hit stand-still traffic,â you sighed.
âCall for another ambo, weâre in bad shape over here.â
â61 to Main, weâre stuck in traffic and unable to take in the West Halstead call. Requesting another ambo for truck and squad assist,â you radioed into dispatch.
âAmbulance 90 is 20 minutes out,â dispatch replied.
âCasey, did you get that?â You asked.
âYeah, do what you can to get here quickly. Weâve got a victim in labor,â he replied.
You motioned to Leslie to try the horns and siren again.Â
âNo luck,â she announced, frustrated and banging on the steering wheel.
âHowâs she doing?â You asked Matt.
âContractions are about two-ish minutes apart.â
âMatt sheâs going to need to start pushing. Get all the blankets and the med kit from the truck. Youâre going to have to deliver there.â
Leslie looked over to you, shocked at what you just said.
âAre you sure you want him to do that?â She whispered.
âWe donât have much of a choice,â you whispered back, âplus itâs Matt. Heâs a natural.â
âWeâre ready here,â Casey told you.
âOk on her next contraction, I need you to tell her to push. Keep her focused on this baby.â
âI donât know if I can do this, Severide.â
âYou have to.â
Several minutes went by without communication from Matt. Finally, over the radio, you could hear screaming from the laboring mother.
âHowâs she doing, Matt?âÂ
âBabyâs about half way. Next contraction is about to start.â
The traffic in front of you started to ease enough so Shay could maneuver around it.
âCasey, weâre on our way. A minute out,â Shay announced.
âI shouldnât stop right?â He asked.
âKeep going, Casey. Weâll take over when we get there. Once the baby is born, dry it off and hand it to the mother.â
Shay was focused, her knuckles white from the amount of force she was putting on them, trying to make sure you got to this victim.
Pulling up to the accident seen, you saw Matt by the passenger door of a mangled car.Â
âBaby is here,â Matt called out over the radio.
Grabbing the jump bag, monitor, oxygen and stretcher, you and Shay rushed to Mattâs side.Â
âCasey, weâre gonna load and go,â you informed him.
âWe didnât have anything to cut the cord,â he was breathing heavily.
As you truck helped you with loading the victim, you reassured Matt.
âYou did good. Congrats, Casey,â you smiled, shutting the ambulance doors behind you.
ââ
Arriving back to the house late, you flopped into your bunk and fell right to sleep. You were blessed with no overnight calls to end the shift, so you could actually get a little sleep, a rarity on shift.
When you woke up, you quickly packed your duffel bag and met Matt out front.
âReady?â He asked.
âYeah, letâs go,â you smiled, âmaybe some uninterrupted time?â
Matt shot you a look.
âIs that a yes?â You asked, getting in his truck.
âDefinitely,â he grinned, starting the truck.
As you arrived back at your apartment, Matt had a look on his face.
âWhatâs on your mind?â You asked, plopping down on the couch.
âThat call.â
âThe car accident?â
âYeah. I delivered a baby on a road today,â he rushed.
âIâm so proud of you.â
âI think we should have a baby,â he paced.
âWhat?â
âYeah, you and me. We could do it, I know we can.â
âMatt, I-â
âBaby, weâd be so good-â
âMatt!â You yelled, cutting him off mid sentence.
âWhat?â
âI donât know if Iâm ready to have a baby,â you admitted.
âWhat?â
âIâm finally in a good spot at 51. I finally made PIC. I donât want to take time off right now. I know you want to have a baby.â
âYeah, I do,â he said, firmly.
âI donât know if I can have a baby with you right now.â
He grabbed his duffel off the floor and started walking towards the door.
âWhere are you going?â You got up from the couch.
âYou canât drop a bomb like that on me and expect me to just sit here. Iâm going to Kellyâs.â
The apartment door shut with a bang. All you could think was âwas this a mistake?â

14 - Getting some big news
Part 15
Dr. Redhead Neighbor
Tag list - send an ask to be added @annieradcliff @watermeezer @zaidatorcuatomorgado @kmc1989 @tallrock35 @melvia-ito @dreamgemini09
Shutting the fire truck door I ran a hand through my hair that was in a ponytail. Brett closed up the ambulance door coming over to me with a cheerful smile on her face. âSo whenâs the wedding future Mrs. Halstead?â
âWeâve been tossing around the idea of getting married at city hall and then doing a bigger then if I come back from deployment.â
Brett snapped back at me sharply. âYou mean when you come back from deployment. I cannot have one of my closest friends dying on me now.â
âTrust me, Brett. It isnât the way Iâd like to go. âI nervously chuckled clasping my hands in front of my chest hearing my phone vibrating inside my jacket pocket. âSpeaking of my soon to be husband, hey Will.â
He switched the phone call to video where I saw he was sitting in the locker room he stored his work bag in at the hospital. âMal, I just called Jay and he said he can get all our friends together before tonight at Mollyâs to tell them the big news.â
âWill, everyone pretty much already knew when I showed up to work wearing your momâs wedding ring. I think you only have to tell your hospital work friends about the fact that weâre engaged.â
He slightly rolled his eyes at me. âFine, fine, either way I am super excited for tonight. I only get so many more days with my favorite girl and her dog.â
âDonât remind me, Halstead!â Brett shouted over my shoulder.
Shaking my head I put my focus back on my fiancĂ©s. âAnyway, where weâre we?â
âI just wanted to call you and say I miss and I love you. And I am having Connor come over after work to help move your stuff over into my apartment. I already talked with the landlord, and she said it was no problem that we combined into one apartment if we do not miss our payment.â
Throwing my head back I smirked knowing he had most of this figured out way before we had our last date. âYou are the best. Is there something specific you want me to wear tonight at Mollyâs?â
âHow about that short black and red dress we got at the store the other day.â Will smirked back at me.
My face began to turn red at the thought considering what we had agreed upon when I wore said dress. âI thought that was only to be worn in the apartment when we â you know..â
âNo I donât know. You might have to say it.â
I glared at the ginger head. âNo way.â
âThen I guess you wonât get to kiss me until tomorrow morning.â Will teased me with a cheeky smile across his face. He playfully chuckled trying to be all serious.
Brett grinned leaning her body against the side of the ambulance vehicle. âYou two are going to make great parents one day.â
âI think weâre far beyond the discussion of babies, Brett.â I glanced back over at her.
She shrugged her shoulders before the call alarm went off meaning we had a case to get tend to. âI wouldnât be too sure about that.â
âIâm gonna miss you, Mal.â Will smiled seeing me glancing over my shoulder knowing we had a call to answer.
Leaning up on my toes I waved bye, finally climbing up inside the passenger seat of one of the fire trucks. Will watched the trucks pull out before his phone vibrates so he ends the video call. âWe need to talk about something important. It may effect your soon to be wife and you. Meet me in the hospital parking lot after your shift.â â from Jay read the text message on his phone.
Two months later â Afghanistan
Running through buildings Maxon ahead of our unit tries leading us away from the firing squad. Bullets fly over our heads with my boots splashing in mud and blood. "Mallory, we're taking up heavy fire!" Luke called out as I fired a shot at an Afghanistan who jumped down from a window trying to kill us.
Maxon barks digging away a hidden room in the bottom of a hideout. I order the rest of my team inside but a bullet gets shot into Luke's leg. "Luke!" I pull him down into the room with Kyle jumping down last. Pulling the door closed with the attached rope between his teeth. Tearing a piece of my shirt off Luke tried to talk.
"Mal go, get the others out of here-" I cut him shacking my head no with my ponytail falling over my left shoulder.
"Stop talking Luke. I'm not leaving you. If I can help you in some way I'm sure as heck going too." Kyle suddenly tugged my shirt when Luke and I are on our feet, dragging us outside with the others. "What is it-" I cut myself off collapsing into the dust hearing rounds of gunfire and an explosion ringing in my ears.
The next time I opened my eyes I felt a cold wet rag being dabbed against my forehead mintues before I was able to realize that it was my former Doctor who treated my leg when I returned home the first time. He placed the rag down on the nearest table picking up the chart that he had been taking notes down on about something. âMs. Easton, I have been waiting for you to get some more rest. I have news I need to talk to you about.â
âWhat are we talking about, Dr. Owenâs?â I questioned him still slowly regaining consciousness.
He flipped over another page from his chart. âAfter the explosion I ran some tests just to make sure you were alright and werenât injured. And I found something when one of my female nurses suggested a change in the physical appearance of your stomach. I have to ask when was the last time you had your period?â
âUm â I know I had it before I was deployed out here. Why do you need to know?â
Dr. Owenâs lifted his gaze up from the clipboard. âIt appears that you are two months pregnant, Ms. Easton. Given the circumstances I have called you Lieutenant and heâs decided that weâre sending you home. So congratulations are in order for you and the babies father.â My mouth hung opened in utter shock where I couldnât believe what he had just told me. I knew Will and I had slept together but I didnât think it would only take one time for that to happen. We couldnât possibly be parents, we werenât even married yet.

Hey guys !!
With the changes I've made to the characters I write for and such, I'm going to reset my taglists.
Here is the link to resubmit your user. HERE pretty please do I want to make sure you guys can still see my stuff. <3
A/n: I don't write for Chicago PD anymore (Jay, Hailey, Kev) And I've also decided to close my Connor requests probably for good. I'm not sure if I'll open them back up again. I did have two requests for him that I have been trying to write but I unfortunately probably won't because of my brain.
I'm sorry if any of this is upsetting? I don't know lol but my form is very messy so I want to clean it up.
Have a good day babes.

Just For A Moment - Part 5
Hello my beautifuls <33
Sorry for the really late update, I have been slammed with family events and have more in a weeks time đđ
But I do hope you enjoy this chapter, I'm going to try and update more often before I go MIA for a few days for wedding related stuff (not mine, sillyđ)
This is a POV of Aurora's experience after she left and why she came back, enjoyyyy!!
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Part 6
Masterlist
When Aurora had made the choice to leave the Intelligence department, and then Chicago, she didn't have it in her heart to discard the items that connected her to her life there.
So as days went by, her phone continued to ring and vibrate with a bombardment of messages and calls, one after the other. She didn't have the courage to silence them, nor the anger within her to turn off her phone or throw it out.
Instead, she bought a new one as she watched her phone continue to light up as weeks went by.
She tried not to read the messages, forced herself to avoid the voicemails left for her and soon they began to die down.
As weeks went by, the need for answers from friends and colleagues grew weaker as they accepted the fact she didn't want to talk to them, didn't want to explain herself or talk about the pain she had gone through.
Aurora threw herself into her work, hoping one distraction or the other was enough to pull her mind away from the horrors of her last few weeks in Chicago.
Soon her phone would only ring once a day, every day at ten o'clock. It was Jay, it was always Jay.
A part of her, selfish and greedy, found herself looking forward to those calls - entertaining the idea of picking up and hearing his voice, listening to the sounds of his breaths, seeing if he still felt guilty, seeing if he wanted her the way she found herself still wanting him.
That was the worst part.
After all he had done, there was a part of her that craved Jay - that needed his voice in her ear, his hands on her skin, his praises and his confessions, his love and his pain. There was a part of her which longed for him, that continued to yearn for him even though she had all but ran away from him.
Perhaps that was why she picked up.
It was 11:37pm when the phone rang. Jay's call had come at 10pm and been ignored. Still, he left a voicemail that went unheard, Aurora was too fearful of the pain his voice would cause her that her ache for it wasn't enough to make her want to listen.
No, this call was from Matt Casey, the firefighter she had given her phone number to so they could arrange a time for him to help her with some construction work on her property back in Chicago.
Maybe it was loneliness or perhaps pure desperation, or anger and spite which fuelled her actions, but she picked up at the third ring.
There was silence on both sides, the only sound being light inhales and deep exhales as both parties decided on what to say.
"You picked up."
His voice sounded surprised.
"Hey, Matt."
Her voice was soft, but cautious. She was unsure why Matt Casey of all people would call, but she was also not sure why she had picked up so quickly.
"Hey, Aurora," he sounded relieved at the sound of her voice, "how are you?"
She shrugged, despite the fact he couldn't see her, "better." It was a lie, but he didn't need to know that.
He didn't need to know she cried herself to sleep every night, that she spent every waking moment thinking about Jay, every lucid breath angry at him, and every calm second grieving what had been lost.
Casey sighed as though he could hear the lies in her words, but chose not to push, "everyone misses you here," he waited a breath, for a response, for a sign of regret she had left or a hint of longing, but nothing.
"Jay misses you."
Aurora inhaled sharply at that, by now she had only been gone just over a month, and the mention of Jay brushed viciously against a raw and gaping wound.
"I'm sorry," his voice was quieter now, speaking his words slower, "Kelly's worried about him. We all are."
"Jay's not my problem," her voice was shaky, but she forced her words out with conviction.
"I know."
There was nothing more to say, "I gotta go, Matt."
"I'll talk to you later."
It wasn't a question, and a part of Aurora was kind of glad for that.
"Bye Matt."
"Bye Aurora."
Their phone calls continued like that for the next few months - Casey would call Aurora every other week, keeping her up to date on things happening, telling her everyone missed her, giving silent encouragements for her to come back to Chicago. And every time, he would try and bring up Jay, to express his worries and the fears of others as Jay wore himself down with guilt and anguish. But every time Aurora would find an excuse to end the call, and pretend Matt had never said anything at all.
Jay's calls still continued, every day like clockwork he would call at ten o'clock, and still Aurora would not answer.
It had all come to a head when her phone rang in the early afternoon. She had finished a gruelling case recently, and had taken to hibernating in her quaint and scarce apartment as she readied herself for weeks under another alias.
The ringtone sang loudly as she stepped towards it, it was too early for it to be Jay, and too soon after the last call for it to be Matt.
Voight.
She thought about not picking up, but Voight wouldn't have called if it wasn't important.
Was it about Jay? Was he okay? Had he been hurt?
She took a calming breath, forcing her hands not to tremble at the troubling thoughts as she answered the call and brought the phone to her ear - "hello?"
"Aurora."
Voight's voice hadn't changed, he still spoke in his baritone rasp, slow and authoritative. A part of her was comforted by it, warming at the sound of a familiar voice she hadn't realised she had been missing.
"Did something happen to him?"
She couldn't help it, couldn't control her fears. It was the first time Voight had called her, and the idea that something bad could have happened to Jay being the reason why gnawed at her.
"He's safe," she let out a sigh of relief, hoping it was quiet enough to be ignored, but a part of Voight perked up at the sound as he continued, hoping his words wouldn't scare her off - "he's struggling though."
"That's not my problem," her voice was a quiet whisper, eyes closing as the words were repeated to her by someone other than Matt.
"I know," he was cautious with his words now, "but that's not why I called."
She was curious now, eyes opening as her brows raised in question, "hm?"
"I got a case."
"And I quit."
Voight sighed at her retort, "as an officer of the CPD. I don't need an officer, I need an undercover agent."
Aurora paused at that, curious as to why Voight would go to all this trouble to ask for her help when there were plenty of experienced undercover operatives within the CPD itself - Jay included.
The truth was, Voight knew someone else could help with the case. But over the years Jay had spent working in Intelligence, he managed to wedge himself into Voight's life with ease. After the death of his son, Voight's reliance on Jay's presence had grown stronger. In some ways, Jay was like a son to him.
So perhaps out of his own form of selfishness or an unprecedented amount of protectiveness, he wanted to help Jay.
Voight could see how Jay was breaking, could see the light fading from his eye as his prayers and pleas went unanswered. He could see the way Jay was losing weight, the way his eyes grew darker with lack of sleep, how he was angrier, and easily tired, how he was in denial and desperate.
He also wasn't in the dark with how Aurora was doing, her father frequently keeping in contact as he spewed his worries about how his daughter was throwing herself into her work, alienating herself from friends and family. Aurora was doing the exact thing she had told her father she wanted to run from. She was losing herself in the lives she lived, working a career that drained her.
Jay and Aurora were both suffering, both exhausted and tired. They both needed each other, but the pain that had been inflicted on them was too much for them to face, and they found it easier to avoid it through their own vices.
Jay's was alcohol, whilst Aurora's was her work.
And the paternal heart of Voight could not bear to hear and see the two torture themselves any longer.
"Why?"
Aurora's question broke him out of his reverie, so he spoke, "why not?"
She groaned in frustration, "Voight, I swear to God. Please. I can't come back."
"You don't want to come back. But I have a case, I need you."
It was true, she didn't want to come back. Fearful of what she would see if she did.
Would Jay have gone to Hailey for comfort? Would they have fallen in love? Was Hailey the one for him? Was Hailey enough for him in a way she wasn't?
They were questions she had forced herself to leave unanswered.
"I'll send you the case file. Have a look, and get back to me," Voight paused, listening to the shallow breaths on the other end of the phone, "the team's not the same without you. Jay isn't either, and I know you aren't. This could be good for you both. Think about it, kid."
Voight ended the call before she could reply, before she could think or before she could say no. She stood there with the phone still pressed to her ear, standing in baited silence even as her laptop pinged with a notification of a new email - the case file.
Still, she stood and thought.
She wasn't sure how long she stayed like that, but soon, she was forced to blink herself back to reality. Her eyes were pulled towards her laptop, already open and waiting for her to investigate.
Aurora probably should have ignored it. She should have gone on about her day and left Voight's request unanswered.
But the agent in her, the officer, and the soldier drilled into her bones forced her to drag her feet towards the device and pull up the files she had been given.
She had a lot of thinking to do, and a very hard decision to make.
***
A few hours had passed since Voight's call, and for the first time in several months Aurora picked up her phone to make a call.
Her finger automatically selected 1, ready to speed dial the one person she was avoiding, simply out of instinct.
She forced her eyes closed as she took laboured breaths, calming herself before she opened her eyes and searched for a specific contact.
Matt.
She liked to think they had become friends during the last few months, and she hoped that he would help her now more than ever. She wasn't sure what she wanted him to say. A part of her wanted to hear encouragements to come to Chicago, and the other wanted him to warn her never to come back.
She wants him to tell her she should find happiness where she was, but she was afraid she never would.
Matt picked up on the last ring, and the pair spoke for a long time. Aurora was surprised - there were no encouragements nor any hints she should stay away.
Matt focused on what she wanted to do, what she felt was right. The truth is she wasn't sure, but looking over the case, she knew she could do some good.
There was a new gang in Chicago, distributing laced drugs to minority areas, causing children as young as ten to be hospitalised and on the brink of death. Voight wanted her to be the one undercover, to get close to who they thought was in charge, to get a confession, or to find some evidence. Anything to get this gang on its knees, to cut off the head of the serpent from where it was rooted.
The call was heavy, Matt reminding her that she would eventually have to see Jay, possibly even work with him. She didn't think she could do that, she thought her throat would clog and her eyes would water, that her mind would panic and she would run again.
Another part of her thought she would turn a blind eye to his actions for a moment of solace in his arms, even if just for a moment longer.
She was conflicted, she was struggling.
And she knew Matt could sense it, even if he couldn't see her.
"It would be great to have you back in town. I know 81 would be happy, I'm sure CPD would be too."
"Maybe. Doesn't mean it won't be hard."
"Nothing is ever easy, especially not in this line of work."
A bitter laugh escaped her, "not in this life, you mean."
Matt sighed through his nose, a silence emanating through the phone, "don't let this break you."
"What?" The words had been unexpected, causing her to sit straighter as she listened closely.
"What Jay did. Don't let it be what breaks you, don't let it stop you from being happy even if you have to come back here to find it."
Aurora let out a shaky breath. She hadn't thought that way before. She hadn't realised that was what she had been allowing to happen, she had been allowing herself to break whilst she lived in misery, staying away from her friends and from a life she truly enjoyed.
Yes, Jay hurt her in a way that was so damaging that she felt the need to flee. But that didn't mean she couldn't go back, or at least, it didn't mean she couldn't try.
She was still wary of the pain and agony she would face when she had to see him, had to hear his voice and face the possibility that he was happy without her.
But she had to try.
At her silence, Matt prompted further, "I'll be there every step of the way. If you come, and if not, I'll still be here."
Her eyes burned at those words, she watched the lines of their friendship begin to blur as she listened to his words of support.
Matt had been there, had been a listening ear, a helpful advisor, and a beloved friend.
She was not sure if she wanted him to be more, but she knew she appreciated his friendship and his support.
She continued to stay quiet, but Matt was undeterred, "I'll see you soon, Aurora. Goodnight."
He spoke as though he knew what her answer already was, spoke as though he knew she was coming, and he was ready to be there in any way she would have him.
Aurora glanced at the clock, wondering how it was gotten late so quickly.
9:58pm.
Oh.
"Goodnight."
Aurora ended the call, and the seconds ticked by quickly as another call replaced the one she had just ended.
She let it ring, until it went to voicemail.
Only this time, she listened to it. She ignored the rest, piled in her voicemail box, waiting for her attentive ears, and played the one Jay had left only seconds ago.
'Rory,' his voice was scratchy, as though he hadn't spoken for quite a while or hadn't drank water in hours. In truth, Jay's preferred form of hydration now was alcohol, 'I'm so sorry. I'm sorry, I don't know what to do.'
Jay's voice grew heavier with tears at every word, guilt weighing him down as he spoke, a debilitating weight began to fester in Aurora's sternum as she listened to his anguish - 'I can't find you. But I need you, please come home.'
Aurora thought it would end there, hoped that his other voicemails were similar babbles of mumbling and slurred apologies from drowning himself with alcohol to hide from his shame. But Jay continued with renewed vigour, his voice light as he reminisced about quiet moments he shared with her, 'we're working on a case. We've almost solved it. I just know it. You would've liked this one. It was a homicide - you always liked those. Said it reminded you of Sherlock Holmes. I read the books you bought me about him, after so long. You were right, I couldn't put them down. I fell asleep on the couch so many times whilst reading, would've missed work if it wasn't for my alarm too,' a strained laugh escapes him.
'I can't go into that room anymore,' her heart sinks as she realises which room he's speaking about, 'not unless I have to. I can't. Not when I know the last person in that room wasn't you. Not when I know I won't be able to sleep without thinking of you. Come back to me,' he spoke with a broken whisper, 'if you're ever ready to have me, ever ready to trust me. Come back home, to me. I'll always wait for you.'
Tears were now streaming down her face, eyes clenched shut as she tried to hold them back, but her shoulders shuddered with stubborn sobs. It was his last words that broke her, that tore down the walls she had placed between herself and her home for so long, that wiped away the distance she had drawn.
'You're enough. You've always been enough. I was just too blind to see it, but I know it now, and I see it now. You're enough.'
There it was. The reply she had been waiting for, all those months ago, out in the open when she had left him to stew in his guilt and misery.
She was enough, but was Jay too late?
***
Aurora tried to tell herself it was Matt's words of encouragement that brought her to this moment. That Matt was why she was here, and that every glance towards the windows and door wasn't in search of him.
She had accepted Voight's offer, unaware of his hidden agenda, and returned to Chicago within the same week.
She had gone to new lengths to avoid the temptation of listening to Jay's voicemails, hiding her phone deep into the depths of a suitcase she left abandoned in the house she had run from all those months ago.
That brought her to this moment now - refamiliarising herself with her surroundings and her friends by making a stop at Molly's. Matt was already waiting for her, with open arms and a hearty smile.
He knew she would come, and he was proud of her for doing so.
He stayed with her the whole time, a protective hand at her back and an ever-present guard at her shoulder as she spoke to old colleagues and faded friends.
But even he did not miss the way her face fell as it tracked a familiar car racing away from Molly's. He didn't miss how she became quieter, more reclusive in the moments which followed.
But he stayed by her side, a compassionate friend ready to help her deal with the brutal emotions that she fought with.
Matt Casey was a good man.
***
Aurora had come into the station the next day, greeted by cheers and welcoming hugs from all who recognised her - even Voight had embraced her tightly, a hug so warm she was left thinking about how long it had been since she had hugged her own father as she relished in the feeling of a heartfelt embrace.
Her presence had been received gracefully by all, except one person - Hailey.
Aurora kept her distance from the woman, not even sparing her a smile as she limited herself to Voight's office and Kim's desk whilst she reacquainted herself.
The desk she used to own still laid bare, but it was clean and tidy - free of any dust, as though it was cared for meticulously, ready for her return should she decide so.
She had passed through the police department several times over the next few days, preparing herself for the operation she would work undercover on. And on every single one of those days, a part of her dreaded seeing Jay whilst another longed to look into his green eyes one more time.
But he hadn't come, and she soon found herself thinking she wouldn't see him at all. That he would avoid her until she left, that all his words in that voicemail were truly drunken rambles, and he didn't mean a word.
She felt stupid, felt naive and desperate for wanting to see the man. For wanting to see his reaction, to see if he would cry, if he would yell, to see if he would embrace her gently or grab her roughly against him, holding her tight as though she'd slip through his fingers like dust.
Aurora wasn't sure what she wanted.

5 times gabby didn't realize kelly and matt were dating (and 1 time she did) - FINAL PART
|-<3-|
pairing - m. casey x k. severide
rating - teen and up (unrequited love, implied sexual content, hurt/comfort, minor violence, kidnapping, happy ending)
word count - 2,745
summary - for part six: andddd the final chapter. what could possibly be the next adventure for this duo? is Gabby still clueless or will she finally come around?
a/n: we do a little 'napping. time to pick on matt!
|-<3-|
+1
"Hey, sweetheart." Kelly purrs, flopping on the couch and throwing an arm around his boyfriend.
Matt slowly looks up from his paperwork; his eyebrows furrowed together in a blatant show of judgment. "Alright, what is happening. The last time you called me that, you had accidentally bought a car."
Kelly smiles a little wider. "Do you want to go out for dinner tonight?"
The Captain sets his files down beside him and shifts his body to face Kelly. "Yeah, could be fun. Should we go to Molly's or maybe that one trivia bar? I could call Brett-"
"No, let's go somewhere new, just us." The other starts to play with the hair at the base of Matt's neck. "Maybe a fancy, romantic dinner? Think about it, the last few months have been consumed by my injury. When's the last time we had fun?"
Matt pauses. "Well, two weeks ago, we had some wine, and I think you were pretty happy about it." He glances down casually and squeezes the hand suddenly on the brunette's thigh.
Kelly hums, remembering. "Mmm, yeah. I would still like to go out. What do you think?" He pulls Matt onto his lap, linking their fingers together.
"Sure, sounds fun. Where do you wanna go, exactly?"
"Oh, no, it's going to be a surprise. Gotta keep you guessing."
Matt smirks, pressing closer. "Okay. Then you better be ready for heart-racing, bed-breaking, ecstasy-type- fun." He delivered each hyphenated phrase with a sultry breath and an inch forward.
Kelly just looked at him. "Jesus, Matt. I don't know if we'll make it that far. You are really sexy when you wanna be, did you know that?"
The blonde laughed, pulling his partner in for a suave kiss.
Matt slipped off the taller's lap, grabbing his files to place them on the kitchen island.
"I'm gonna change quick. After that, I have to pick up something from a friend, and then I'll come back to pick you up. 'Kay? Dress nice." Kelly spoke, already walking towards their bedroom.
Matt nodded his acknowledgment before burying himself into the paperwork again.
-
A bell dinged as Kelly entered the jewelry store, glancing around for his favorite attendant. "Ah, Mr. Severide. I was wondering when you were going to come back. Have you finally decided?"
He sighed in relief. "Kenny. Yes, I have. The light silver band, did you hold it for me?"
"Against my better judgment, yes. I just like you, Mr. Severide."
Severide grinned. "Kenny, stop. I'm practically an engaged man."
Kenny smiled back. "Let me get that ring for you, sir."
-
Hours later, after a fancy, romantic dinner, with expensive champagne and delicious food, Kelly and Matt are walking down a well-lit path close to the loft. The blonde is cuddling his partner's arm, their hands locked at Kelly's side.
"Mmm, I missed this," Matt says, tightening his grip slightly.
"Missed what?"
"Just us. It's been crazy these past few months with your injury and work. It felt like any time we wanted to be alone, there was this third person in the room, making it awkward."
"Let me guess, the sprained ankle? I couldn't walk for days." Kelly smirked down at Matt.
"Ugh, whatever."
Kelly stopped in the middle of a clearing, a quiet road a few feet away. He put a knuckle under Matt's chin, tilting it a little. "No, I know what you mean. I felt the same way. But we got over it, right? We're here now-"
They heard screeching up the street, like tires leaving marks on the asphalt. Matt left Kelly's grasp and walked forward, more into the light of a street lamp. The noise continued to get closer. Suddenly, the vehicle came into sight, a white van.
Matt shrugged and turned away from the street. When it came to an aggressive halt, two men slammed open the side door to step down from it.
"Matt!" Kelly immediately started rushing forward, but the men in black hoodies and ski masks already had their hands on Matt, pulling him into the van.
The blonde started to fight against them, but the taller pulled out a cloth and put it over his face. His eyes started drooping as the door closed behind them.
"Go, go!" The vehicle took off, barrelling down the street as Kelly ran behind it.
"Matt!!"
-
"I'm sorry, what?" Boden asked.
"Matt got kidnapped! Right in front of me! I didn't even get to fight the dogs that took him." Severide started to break down. "He's gone, he's gone. My whole world is gone." Wet streaks began to run down his face.
Boden sat him down on a nearby bench in Voight's office. "Alright, Kelly. Deep breaths. Why don't you start over?"
Severide sniffed. "I wanted to propose tonight." He looked up with watery eyes. "We went out to this fancy restaurant and had a romantic dinner. It was perfect. And then we were walking in the park near our apartment-" A fresh wave of tears cut the man off as he sobbed quietly.
"Severide, we can't find Casey unless you give us all the details." Voight reminded him.
Jay offered him a tissue box before leaning against the desk.
Severide recovered somewhat and continued. "We heard this screeching up the street, and then this white van came into view." He paused, closing his eyes. "And they took him. Two guys, average build. Ski masks and everything. They even had chloroform. I, um, got a partial license plate." He pulled out a scrap of paper and handed it to Jay. It was four symbols long. 5B7I
"Thank you, Severide."
Voight spoke up. "Was there anything unusual about them - tattoos, did they speak, stuff like that?"
"I was a little busy watching my boyfriend get kidnapped." Severide snapped.
"Just trying to get it while it's fresh in your mind," Jay said gently before laying a hand on Voight's forearm, shooting him a disapproving look. The Seargent mouthed a 'What' back.
"No, I told you everything I noticed."
"Okay, thank you again, Severide. This should be good information to get started with. Chief Boden, why don't you take him for a cup of coffee?"
Boden sighed. "Yeah, come on, Kelly." He put a hand on his lieutenant's shoulder, ready to pick him up off the bench.
"No."
"Kelly?" Boden questioned.
"I'm not going anywhere while my Matt is still out there. You're gonna let me help you, or I'm gonna help myself." Severide stared Voight in the eye as he stood.
The Sergeant sighed. "Look. I don't want to step on your toes, but this isn't exactly your area of expertise."
"I know, but. Just- let me help. Because if I don't find Matt, if I don't get him back-" Severide started to choke up again. "My life will be over. I won't-"
Voight didn't say anything for a few seconds. "Fine."
-
The last thing Casey remembers was seeing Kelly's face as he ran towards the Captain. He shook awake with the moment still imprinted on the whites of his eyes and was greeted by a dim room. He was sitting on a metal chair facing a blacked-out window. Pulling on his wrists made ropes tighten against Casey's arms. He groaned in frustration when the same happened with his legs.
"Hello?" He called out. "You're not scaring me! I like being tied up!" Which was untrue, but they didn't need to know that.
A man with unkempt hair and a 5'clock shadow emerged from the semi-darkness. "So, you're Kelly's new boyfriend."
Casey's eyes narrowed slightly. "I'm sorry, who are you?"
"Eric Sutton. Kelly never mentioned me?" Eric's sinister smile drooped slightly.
"Was he supposed to?"
"We dated for almost two years. I imagine it would have come up." Casey analyzed the man, noticing the imprint of a switchblade in his left pocket. "My hair used to be lighter, if that helps."
"Nothing comes to mind."
Eric sighs, disappointed. "Well, it doesn't matter. You will have to remember me after this."
"What are you gonna- " Casey is cut off by a powerful punch to his jaw. He tastes copper as another fist is driven into his stomach. Tears spring to the blonde's eyes as the chair tips to the right and falls. Eric starts kicking him in the gut, barely missing his crotch.
"See how Kelly likes you now." The man says before Casey blacks out.
-
"Okay, first, who would kidnap Matt and why? Does he have any enemies who might want him dead?" Voight asked Severide.
"Well, it's Matt; he has a tendency to rub people the wrong way." Severide took a drink of coffee, accenting the shaking in his hands. "He thought he had a stalker, though. Said a couple of times earlier this week he would see an unmarked white van outside before it drove away."
Jay's ears perked up. "Yeah, Matt called me and asked me to look into that. I hadn't gotten anywhere."
Voight nodded solemnly. "Did we get a hit on the license plate yet?" He asked his partner.
A small ding answered the Seargent's question. "Registered to a Simon Towers. Two priors: attempted kidnapping and aggravated assault. Ooo, and he had a partner for both of them: James Towers." Jay looked at the man standing over him.
"Brothers." He scoffed.
"Address is in West Englewood."
"Let's go."
-
"Alright, Boden, Severide, stay in the car; we'll be right back." The brunette said, glancing in the rearview mirror as he and Voight exited the vehicle.
The officers pulled their guns and stood on opposite sides of the doorway.
"On my count, one, two, three."
Jay kicked open the front door, immediately scanning the first room with his gun raised. "Clear." He called. Voight entered then, moving forward into what looked like a kitchen. They cleared the entire first floor and were making their way up the stairs when they heard a thump. On the right side of the house, garbage cans were kicked over as whoever fell was trying to flee. Jay made it out a side door and gave chase.
"Hey!" He shouted. Severide, much closer to the running man, flung open his door, whacking one of the brothers flat on his ass. Jay just got over to the felon as Voight exited the house, leading a man in handcuffs.
-
Casey spits out more blood, watching Eric take his phone from his pocket. "What do you want? Money?"
Eric laughs. "No, honey, I just want to see Kelly suffer. Should we call him? What's your password?"
"I think you broke my arm." The Captain says.
"Oh, don't be such a baby." Eric faces the phone to Casey's face. It unlocks with a quiet click. "Wow, didn't expect that to work. Alright, Kelly, Kelly." He scrolls through the other's contact list, pressing the video call button when he finds Kelly.
Kelly blinks twice when he sees Casey's profile picture pop up on his phone.
"Who's that?" Boden asks.
"It's Casey; he's trying to video call me."
"I'm gonna get Voight."
The Chief comes back with Voight and Jay before Severide answers the phone. The Seargent instructs Severide to face away from the inside of the station and not to talk like anyone else is there.
"Matt, baby, are you okay?" Severide says, practically hysterical.
"Hi, Kelly." Eric appears on the screen, grinning wide.
"Eric? What the hell? Where is Matt?" Severide starts to ball one of his fists.
"Oh, he's right here, sweetheart." Eric turns the phone, snuggling up against Casey so the firefighter can see them both. "Remember when you broke up with me, and I said if you ever find another boyfriend, I'll kill him?"
Casey's eyes widen as he struggles against the tape across his mouth. "I really don't."
"Well, guess what I'm going to do." He pulls out his switchblade and playfully drags it across the blonde's throat before the call ends.
"No!" Severide exclaims, putting his head in his hands.
Voight storms back to the interrogation room and slams his fists on the table. "Where is your boss?!" He yells. The brothers - with fear in their eyes - start to talk quickly.
He re-enters the large room and grabs hold of Severide's shoulder, dragging him to the car as the others follow. Jay calls for backup on the drive as the sirens blare out. Soon enough, they are pulling up to an abandoned building.
Voight instructs the other officers to go around the back as they surround the property. He looks to Severide, who is leaning against the car. "Stay back, okay?"
Positioning himself on the side of the doorway, the man holds up his radio. "On my count, one, two, three." The Sergeant enters the building with the others and raises his gun. Severide is a few steps behind him. Within minutes, after maneuvering many empty rooms, the pair stumbles upon a large room.
Eric stands over Casey with his knife raised. "Eric Sutton!" Jay calls. "Put the knife down!"
"Now, why would I do that?" He brings his arm down just as a shot rings out. Casey falls with Eric, landing in his pooling blood. Still strapped to the chair, he can't move away from the liquid soaking into the blonde's clothes. The wound on his neck from the other's knife starts to leak as Kelly runs up to Matt. Matt's eyes slip closed as he feels Kelly's fingers on his face.
-
"Well, Matt. We have to stop meeting like this." Doctor Halstead said, fixing Matt's IV drip as he slowly opened his eyes.
Matt blinked blurrily, looking around the room for Kelly. "Where's-"
"Severide? He went out for some ice. I'm sure he'll be back soon." Doctor Halstead smiled.
"How long have I been here?" Matt asked, sitting up on the bed.
"Few hours. Broken arm and a few cuts and bruises. Plus a black eye. Severide was really worried about you."
"Thank you, Doctor." He left, giving Matt a little wave.
Eventually, Kelly came back and almost dropped his ice cup as he saw the Captain's weak smile. "Matt! You're awake!"
"Hey, baby."
Kelly rushed forward and dragged him into a long kiss. He pulled back reluctantly, pressing their foreheads together. "I thought I lost you."
"I'm here."
"I thought I was never gonna see you again; I thought I was never going to kiss you again; I thought I lost you." Tears sprung from Kelly's eyes.
"I'm here, Kelly. I'm not going anywhere." Matt reassured him, eyes boring into his own, green on green. "Kiss me."
The brunette did as Matt pulled him onto the bed, and they laid together, sharing soft kisses.
Minutes later, the firehouse got there - minus Gabby and Sylvie, giving Matt hugs and clutching their hearts in relief.
As the crews got caught up in their talking, Severide cleared his throat. "Uh, Matt. I have something to ask, and I think this is the best time, in front of the house. In front of our family." Kelly glanced at Boden, and he nodded.
Matt tilted his head slightly.
Gabby and Sylvie finally snuck in as everyone's eyes were on Kelly and Matt.
The lieutenant took his partner's hand. "We've had a lot of scary experiences lately, and I just can't stand not having my forever on your finger anymore."
"Kelly. What are you doing?" Matt asked, his voice breaking.
Kelly laughed slightly, pulling out a box from his jacket pocket. Everyone gasped.
"What's happening?" Gabby whispered to her friend. Sylvie shushed her.
Severide popped the ring box open. "Matthew Casey, you are the air I breathe, the food I eat, the water I drink. Yours are the lips I kiss; yours is the body I worship." The house groaned at that. Kelly rolled his eyes before continuing. "Yours are the eyes I adore. Matt, you are everything to me. Will you-"
"Yes, yes, Kelly Severide, yes! I'll marry the hell out of you." Kelly grinned and roughly kissed his new fiance.
"When did this become a thing?" Gabby asked Sylvie, pulling her back from the group flocking the couple.
"Severide and Casey have been dating for months. How did you not know this? They told everyone at once."
"I must not have been there. I- are you serious?"
"Yes? They just got engaged, do you need any more proof?" Sylvie sassed, going up to congratulate her friends.
"I love you," Kelly sweetly whispered before kissing his partner again.
"I know," Matt whispered back.

Worth It
Pairing: Matt Casey x Reader
Requested: no
Summary:Â Y/N struggles with demands from a friend, and Matt solidifies the fact he will always be in her corner.
Word Count:Â 2.6K+
Warnings/Tags: toxic friendships
A/N:Â something bugged me recently so hereâs a fic! This can be a bit of a controversial take based on the context but didnât want to go full on in the fic so anyway~ just needed to get this off my chest.
âBaby, IâmâŠâ Mattâs voice drifted off slightly before he completed his sentence, ââŠhome.â
You could only imagine being Matt and coming home to this sight.
You were seated in the middle of the living room in the apartment you shared with Matt, surrounded by yarn, bits of fluff stuck in your hair, sheets of sketched designs strewn across the floor.
You could feel the panic rise even more as you took in the look on Mattâs face. Especially since you couldnât read his emotions as the anxiety clouded your brain.
âMatt, IâŠâÂ
You couldnât continue as you felt your chest tighten just a little, the anxiety and panic clawing its way to the surface and rearing its ugly head at you.Â
This had all started with Amy.
Amy.
She was a friend youâd known for almost your entire life. Youâd laughed together, cried together, dreamed about the future together and talked about those dreams. Along the way, you both had stumbled, you saw less of each other, and Amy reached out less, sometimes forgetting to respond to your messages. Despite what everyone told you, you convinced yourself that it was just how life was and you made excuses for Amyâs growing absence in your life.
Then, sheâd reached out to tell you she was getting married.
You felt the excitement first, remembering it like it was yesterday, how you had both talked excitedly about how you would be each otherâs bridesmaids. It wasnât a conscious memory, but it was like your brain had pulled it up, triggered by the words Amy was saying.
You didnât even feel any apprehension when she asked if you would make the flowers for the bridesmaids. You werenât too confident because crocheted flowers werenât really your thing. In fact, youâd only tried it out once. So youâd told Amy youâd give it a shot, make a prototype and see how it went.
You could tell Matt hadnât been thrilled with the idea but he didnât say much, only offering opinions when you asked for them and keeping most of his comments focused on the task rather than Amy. Yet, you knew he was holding back. You knew Matt didnât feel great about Amy, mainly because of the things heâd witnessed, in particular, the way she blew back into your life when it was convenient for her.
But things had been going downhill ever since youâd made the first prototype. She kept changing what she wanted, and even you were getting a little frustrated, mixed with a desire not to disappoint her.
So, having Matt stand there with a surprised look on his face in the middle of an extremely messed up living room only added to your current panic.
You felt your breath quicken and very soon, Mattâs figure was clouded by the tears you didnât realize had pooled behind your eyes.
Without saying anything, Matt dropped whatever was in his arms, heading straight for you and folding you nice and tight into his arms.Â
âY/N, itâs okay. Itâs okay.â Matt whispered quietly, and you felt the rumble of his chest before your breathing slowly evened out once again.
Matt didnât move immediately, but his fingers brushed off the residual tears that were rolling down your cheeks.
âSorry, I donâtâŠâÂ
Matt just tightened his arms a little and pressed a kiss firmly to the top of your head.
âSorry,â You mumbled, scrubbing off the remnants of tears on your cheeks before glancing up at him.
Matt shook his head and leaned down for another kiss and you leaned into his embrace, temporarily forgetting about the mess in the living room.
By the time you woke up the next morning, there was barely a trace of the mess last night. The yarn was back in the boxes you had in the corner of the room and the half done flowers were laid out neatly on the kitchen counter.
No one else would have guessed what had happened the night before.Â
Matt was almost on his way out, draining the last sip of his coffee and smiling as you walked into the kitchen.
He didnât ask but just studied your face for a little longer than usual.
You smiled back at him and nodded. âGo on, Iâm fine.â You assured him, even though you stepped toward him and nuzzled your face into his shoulder.
Matt pressed you lightly against him and pressed a kiss to your temple.
âYou know where to find me if you need me.â Matt whispered gently into your ear.
You smiled into his shoulder with a small nod before both of you pulled away and you let Matt go before he was late for shift.
Even as the door closed behind Matt, you felt it rear to the surface. This time, the feeling was different. It wasnât even residual anxiety from the night before. You couldnât put your finger on it but it was bugging you.
Deciding that it might be good to have a change of pace, you grabbed the materials you needed, slung the tote bag over your shoulders and left the house, figuring youâd find a nice cafe to work out of.
So you did and you had been right. A change of environment had done wonders for you and you finally had a final prototype for the new flower idea Amy had had.
You snapped a photo and sent it to Amy, quoting as reasonable a price you could for the materials and stitches. You even gave her what she called a âfriend discountâ.Â
But for someone who sometimes took days to respond to you, her response was quick now.
Itâs a little out of my budget.
Thereafter, she proceeded to give you a price she was willing to pay that was such a lowball, you almost dropped your phone.
It took you a moment and another few breaths to register that feeling bubbling up in your chest now. You recognised it as a more intense version of what you had been feeling that morning. Now, you could indeed put your finger on it - Disappointment.
It was disappointment that raged within you. Especially when youâd always treated Amy like a sister.
You felt it swell as you thought about the effort youâd put in all these years, even just the effort in designing flowers she would want for her wedding, and then you remembered the many times sheâd blown you off, and when sheâd been dating that toxic ex of hers and had cut you out of her life for more than a year until the break up.
Resisting the urge to send her a scathing reply, you stuffed the rest of your belongings into your bag and headed out the cafe, only realizing where your legs had taken you when you looked up at the firehouse in front of you.
The trucks were all parked which meant everyone was around.Â
Now that you were here, you had second thoughts and you were about to retreat, thinking youâd talk to Matt during breakfast the next day when you heard an all too familiar voice call out to you.
âY/N?â
Of course today would be the day Kelly came to get something out of his car.
âHey, Kelly.â You greeted back, your voice sounding weird even to you.
Kelly either didnât notice or chose not to mention it. He just smiled and nodded. âCome on, Caseyâs in his office.â
You didnât protest, letting Kelly lead you in as if it was your first time visiting the firehouse.
Everyone called out toward you with smiles and you waved back at them as you made your way through the common room and toward Mattâs office.
âLook who I found,â Kelly called with a casual rap at Mattâs door.
Matt sat up, glancing at you before smiling. âThanks, Sev.â
Kelly winked, more at you than him, before leaving the both of you alone.
Matt got up to close his door and glanced at you. âEverything okay?â
After all, you rarely came to the firehouse without a call beforehand. Usually, you were worried about being in the way so you only came to bring them some food, especially when youâd heard it was a difficult shift.
You nodded. âNothing big, I justâŠâ
You held back a heavy sigh and just handed him your phone.
Mattâs eyes moved across your phone screen as he read the message and you could see the slight darkening of his expression, even though he was trying to keep it under control.
Matt looked back up at you and handed your phone back to you. âSo what are you thinking?â Matt asked.
You shouldnât have been shocked by Matthew Caseyâs complete focus on your feelings, but you couldnât help the little jolt of warmth that still filled you even though you and Matt had been dating for a long while.
You shrugged and Matt gave you a look, which just made you smile.
âFine, Iâm annoyed. Itâs like every single moment with her has been flashing in my head since I got that message and the annoyance has been piling. Thatâs why I havenât responded.â
âGo for it, babe.â Matt said, matter of factly.
You glanced at him with half a smile.
âYou deserve to be treated with respect and I think itâs high time someone told her. And if you donât want to do it, Iâd be happy to.â Matt said, his voice laced with a subtle protectiveness.
You pulled him toward you, just so you can lay your head against him and smiled. âThank you.â
The conversation had gone about as youâd expected.Â
You tried your best to keep your side as light as possible while remaining firm, and ultimately, the decision had been for you to try to do little flower wristlets for Amyâs flower girls, instead of a large order of flowers.
You werenât too thrilled to do it anymore, but a part of you felt obliged to, so youâd agreed.
It was only two days later that you had run into Amy when Matt had taken you out for dinner.
âHey, IâŠâ You greeted her even from a distance, trying to keep things as normal as possible.
But you didnât miss the look on her face as she turned away, as if she was pretending not to see you.
Instinctively, you glanced up at Matt, your expression one of disbelief.
Matt just squeezed your hand but you could see the strain lines on his face which were a clear telltale sign he was using all his effort to hold back.
Matt was trying to reassure you, but the only thing you felt now was anger.
There was no more second-guessing on your part about whether you had been too harsh or too mean. You knew the answer.Â
You were about to open a small side business for your crochet. All your friends, including Amy, knew that.
In fact, anyone who tried to ask you to make something for them had always offered you more than what you quoted, reminding you that friends didnât take each other for a ride.
Amy was the exact opposite and what really grinded at you was the fact that she thought she was well within her rights to be angry at you.
You were a little confused but the anger had swallowed it all up.
âYou want to go elsewhere?â Matt offered.
You glanced up at him.
If this had been anyone else, it might have made you avoid the situation altogether. But right now, the indignant feeling had turned into anger.
âWhy should we? You put in so much effort into trying to get a reservation here. Letâs just have a good dinner.â You answered.
This felt like a huge breakthrough moment for you, even Matt felt it - you could do anything you had set your mind to.Â
You sat down with Matt in a corner of the restaurant, pretty sure that Matt had used one of his superpowers to get the both of you a great table and you turned your back on Amy, focusing all your energy and attention on the one person who was worth it.
Once the appetisers were served, youâd thrown Amy to the back of your mind, sinking into Mattâs company and enjoying the date night that both of you deserved.Â
It was just as the both of you had stepped out after paying the bill when someone grabbed your arm.Â
âFoodâs great here, isnât it?â
You blinked back in disbelief at Amy, who was smiling as if nothing had happened. Â
It would have been much better if you hadnât met her in front of the restaurant earlier. Now, you were just wondering what the hell she was doing.
Matt didnât say anything, just stood by your side and waited.
âWhat are you doing?â You asked, unable to hold it back any longer. There was a slight tremor in your voice that no one but Matt picked up on.Â
The saddest part was Amy used to be able to. Now, she just didnât care.
That realization hit you hard but also allowed you to look her straight in the eye.
Frustratingly, Amy was staring at you as if she was confused by your question.
When you didnât offer her any explanation, she swallowed and spoke, âCome on, Y/N. I told you I was on a budget. Youâre my friend, I didnât expect you to try and profit off my wedding.â
You glanced up at Matt just a little and he merely nodded in encouragement.
âProfit? Amy, you agreed to pay! You are literally the only person that has lowballed me for anything crochet related. Iâm not even asking you to pay me for the prototypes or the materials used for it. Have you looked up the prices online? Iâm profiting nothing.â You paused and looked her directly in the eye. âLook, I think this isnât a good idea. â
âWhat are you saying? You donât want to talk about it?â Amy asked, and you could hear the tone in her voice change slightly.
You sighed. âIâm saying I donât think I can make anything for your wedding, or be your bridesmaid. Iâve said everything that needs to be said.â
âY/N, you⊠What am I supposed to tell my family?â
You couldnât hold back the chuckle that escaped your lips. You shouldnât have expected anything else but the fact that she was more worried about having to explain what had happened to her family members who had always treated you as one of their own, spoke volumes.
âYou can tell them what happened, Amy. Just remember that if anyone calls me, Iâm telling the truth.â
Matt smiled and slung an arm around you, turning to lead you away before he paused.
He glanced back at Amy before he spoke, âShe cared. She really cared and you threw it back in her face. She deserves someone who treats her as a friend.â
You tugged at Mattâs arm and Matt sighed before taking you away with him.
The journey home had been pretty silent and Matt only broke it as he closed the door behind the both of you and hung both your jackets by the door.
âYou okay?â
You glanced up at him and nodded before you pulled back again and shrugged. âKind of, you know? Iâm upset but like it also feels lighter? If that makes sense.â
âIt just has to make sense to you. The only thing important to me is how you are feeling right now.â
You stepped into Mattâs embrace and smiled against him.Â
âWith you? Matthew Casey, Iâm on top of the freaking world.â
Matt smiled, leaning back enough to take a look at you before pressing his lips gently to yours in a deep kiss.

Jay Halstead (& Platonic! Will Halstead): People You Love
Some stories just write themselves and that is what this one did. Iâve been in a writing mood lately and I have a whole list of ideas I want to go through. This isnât super Jay x reader-focused.Â
Warnings: Mentions of PTSD and anti Will/ Natalie contentÂ
You took a sip of your drink listening to Will talk to his brother about his latest disagreement with Natalie. You had learned at the beginning of your relationship with Jay and first meeting Will that it was not a topic of conversation that you should chime in on. Â
Will wanted to be with Nat and there was nothing that could change that to his and her own detriment. You stirred the brightly colored liquid with your straw, listening to the ice cubes click against the glass. It was a sweet drink that Gabby had made for you. You were one of the few who frequented Mollyâs that didnât drink beer and only ordered mixed drinks. You had gotten hell for it from a few of the blue-collar boys, but Gabby had taken that as a challenge. There was always a new drink she had found for you to try.Â
You tried to hide your wince by taking a drink when Will went through some particularly low blows of the fight. The saying sticks and stones make break my bone never considered how cutting words could be. Especially from the people who were supposed to love you. âYou want another babe?â Your eyes flashed between his eyes and your cup which you now found almost empty. You hesitate, but with the way Will is going, you will probably be here for quite a while yet. Â Â
âYeah, just one more,â You agree. You watch him leave the table and make his way over to the crowded bar top. He wouldnât have to wait if not for your drink, but he never complained. You heard a sigh and the loud click of a bottle being set more forcefully on the table. Â
âAlright, let's hear it.â You glance up at Will expectantly. You werenât close but you had acquaintanceship because of Jay. You liked Will but it was hard to form a real friendship with someone when you felt like you had to edit everything you said because they couldnât handle your honesty. Will had a strong alpha male confidence and ego. He needed someone who could call him to the carpet, but you werenât willing to risk your relationship with Jay to be that for him. You tilted your head in question to his statement. âI know you want to say something, so letâs hear it.â You shake your head circling your straw in your cup again. The bangles that lined your arms clinked together loudly as they slid down to your wrists. âCâmon,â Will pressed.Â
âItâs nothing you want to hear.â Â
âBut there is something you want to say.â His gaze held yours and he raised his eyebrows in question. There was a challenging spark in his eyes. He was looking for a fight. âYouâve been with my brother for almost a year and never had an opinion you wanted to share about any of my relationship problems? I doubt that. Iâve been trying and nothing has been working out. So, Iâm up for a female viewpoint.â Â
âWhat you want is a fight. I like my relationship with Jay, Iâm not going to ruin it by fighting with his older brother.â Will sits up a little straighter in his seat. Â
âIs that so? Well, this one can be on the house. No backlash or fallout. The way I see it-I asked, you answered.â You eye him up and down trying to determine the truth of his words and if he was able to abide by what he just offered. You looked at the bar. Jay was leaning leisurely against the bar top talking to Kelly Severide, Matt Casey, and Gabby. You could tell he was still going to be a minute. You look back at Will and nod. Â
âYou and Natalie are never going to work.â Will blows out a breath and leans back in his seat before scoffing and shaking his head. Â
âYou donât-â You shake your head at him holding up your hand making all the bangles clank down to the bottom of your forearm, the loud noise effectively covering up his rebuttal. Â
âUh-uh, you asked my opinion and now you're going to listen to it.â Will mouth turns into a firm line but he stays silent. âYou two are bad for each other. I know you want it to work, to figure it out, for the little rainbows and butterflies to flutter down to fix all your problems. But itâs not going to happen. You two are bad for each other. She is bringing out the worst in you and from what I can tell- from the very limited time Iâve spent with you together- you are doing the same for her.âÂ
âI love her,â You shake your head at the redheaded man in front of you.Â
âWhat you're doing to each other isnât love Will. I know you care about her. Want whatâs best for her but that doesnât make it you. Love is finding each other's soft spots, their weakness. Itâs learning and knowing exactly what could destroy them. Itâs having all that power and choosing to protect them instead of bringing them to their knees.â You play with a bangle on your wrist twisting it, âIâve been in a relationship where we picked each other to pieces, and I promise you Will that isnât what you want.â You feel your eyes mist over with emotion, âItâs hard letting go but when you find someone that goes out of their way to protect you...When you would do anything to protect them...You will know that youâve made the right decision.âÂ
âI protect Natalie.â You shake your head at Will getting frustrated with his purposeful ignoring of the issues. âWe just get heated sometimes, say things we donât-âÂ
âThatâs what I am saying, Will. It seems to happen every other week with you too. Over stupid things that donât matter.â Â
âUnlike you and Jay. Because Iâm sure you too never fight.â Will shoots back and your frustration rises. Â
âJay has PTSD. Iâm more worried about protecting his mental health than notching up our day-to-day bickering. He gets in this headspace sometimes and it is irritating and frustrating because I just want him to talk to me. For him to let me help him. But he wonât. I didnât understand at first. How could I? Then he had a really bad bout of it after a case. He didnât hear me come in and I startled him. He pulled his gun on me. Pointed it right at my head.â Â
Will felt his own frustration turn into something churning in his stomach. He knew his brother struggled with PTSD from time to time. He knew that he had nightmares and that there were times when he was constantly on edge- hypervigilant. But Will had never been there to see the full extent of it. âWhen he realized it was me, I could see it all in his eyes. He was afraid that he could hurt me. That I would be afraid to be around him. If he had any idea how terrified I was, not that he would hurt me but that he would torture himself with it. Nobody can hurt Jay like Jay can. The fallout was awful. He struggled to get past it. I knew that it could never happen again.âÂ
âSo, what did you do?â Â
You looked at your arm and wiggled it. The bangles clank loudly together. âI made it so I can never sneak up on him again. When I went through my Bollywood phase and bought bangles my mom used to complain that the entire neighborhood could hear me when I walked around. Iâm sure one highly trained soldier can hear it coming from a mile away.â You look over to meet your gaze with Will again. âNow when I see the signs, I wear them. That is what you do for the people you love.â Â
A look of understanding and respect is clear in Willâs eyes. You give him a smile and feel the threads of friendship beginning to form on the strong foundation of honesty and shared love of another person. âIf you ever tell him that-â Will mimics zipping his lips before taking the last pull of his beer. You two sit in quiet understanding, and you can see Will marinating on your words. Whether they are thoughts about Jay or his relationship with Natalie you were unsure. Â
Jay returns a few minutes later, setting a vivid blue and green drink in front of you and two bottles of beer for the brothers. You eyed the drink thoughtfully, âGabby said you had to try it. She called it sweet poison, I think.â You stir it before sipping through the straw. You could taste the rum. Gabby had a habit of being heavy-handed with your drinks. It was good though. You turned to look at Gabby and when she raised her eyebrows in question you gave her an enthusiastic nod. She fist-pumped her accomplishment before turning back to Matt. âThat good?âÂ
His strong hand found your thigh under the table, and you smiled at him. You caressed his forearm with one hand while pushing the drink closer to him with the other. âYeah, try it.â He made a face at you but took a drink from the cup, not the straw. He merely shrugged his shoulders when you asked what he thought. âYeah, yeah itâs always too sweet for you.â Jay looks over at his brother.Â
âYou okay man?â He questions, Will was being too quiet. Â
âYeah,â He runs his fingers through his curls, âI was just thinking... Might be a good time to get away for a while. Maybe do a week trip at Gramp's cabin. Fish and stock up on some more wood for the winter. You want to go?â The offer seems to throw Jay for a second. Between Willâs struggling relationship and Jay being busy with a heavy caseload they hadnât had much time to spend together. Jay looks over at you and you smile brightly at him squeezing his arm.Â
âYeah, I have some time saved up that I need to go through.â Â Â Â Â

One Year Later
Running as fast as my feet could carry me I abandoned the building that was on fire falling down onto the ground tripping on some wood that had fallen off the house because of the fire. I groaned blinking my eyes seeing Casey rushing to my aid where he yanked me up before our bodies got thrown forward by an explosion of flames. âEaston! Ugh â are you alright?â
âYeah. I â I think so. How are you?â I forced myself to my feet as best as I could offering him my hand helping him off the ground. Brett and Dawson had already left in their ambulance with the patients that needed o go to East Mercy hospital.
Casey removed his firefighter helmet from his head running a gloved hand through his hair. âIâm okay. Iâve been in tougher situations than what we had today.â
âHey chatty Kathyâs letâs get back to the house. Millâs has food going in the oven and Iâm hungry!â We turned our heads in the direction of the fire truck that Kelly was climbing in the backseat.
Casey and I made our way back over to the fire truck where we made our way back to the house. Climbing out of the passenger seat my boots hit the stone concrete floor. I hung up my firefighter gear just walking around in a fire house 51 shirt, some blue jeans and my brown boots about to go get some food until my phone rang off inside my locker when I walked past it. âHey, Halstead. I wasnât expecting to hear a call from you this early in the day.â
âAre you Ms. Mallory Easton?â A computer operator voice responded through the phone.
âYes. This is she. Who is this?â
âYouâre call is now being transferred.â The operator answered back.
âMs. Easton, this is Lieutenant Griffin. I have been trying to reach you for a while now.â
I ran a hand through my hair nervous to hear his voice after all this time. âI apologize for that, sir. I have gotten a new job with Firehouse 51. So, I havenât been seeing your phone calls recently. Um, what exactly do you need to tell me about?â
âI must inform you that we need you and Maxon back for deployment.â
Slowly lowering myself down onto the wooden bench in front of my open locker I couldnât believe what he had just said to me. âSir, I - I have no clue what to say. I thought I was done â that I had finished my tour.â
âWhen Dr. Owen sent you home we believed that we had cleared everything from here. Unfortunately we had some new information come in from one of our guys. Somebody is planning on attacking the US soil.â
Sucking in a breath I felt like I was frozen in some sort of nightmare. I was finally with my best friend. I had found some more friends and gotten a new job that I was beginning to enjoy here. Now it might all get taken away from me. âSir, how soon would I have to be deployed out?â
âIâd give it would be three to four months at the most.â He responded through the phone with a very heavy sigh meaning he didnât care for the answer he had given me either.
âLieutenant Griffin, when do I need to let you know that I have everything squared away on my end?â
He corrected my statement. âYou have to remember Ms. Easton. This is the military you donât have to give us notice. If we need you youâll just have to follow the orders youâve been assigned.â
âYes, I understand sir. Iâll figure this out.â
He hung up the phone without another word. âIâll be in touch. Good day.â
Sitting my phone down beside me I hit the lock button on my phone then turned it back on to show the lock screen that Will and I had taken with Maxon on our one month anniversary where we had went and done the tilt at the John Hancock Building.
âTwo tickets for the 360 tilt.â Will handed asked the cashier woman at the front desk the money.
I was standing behind Will and Maxon was sitting beside me while I held his leash attached to the collar loosely in my hands. âOh, Iâm sorry maâam. But he canât be up there unless he is a service dog.â
âHeâs actually a former Army veteran K-9. I think he meets that criteria.â I corrected her statement with a smile.
She nodded seeing Maxon wagging his tail happily at her. âAh I see. Have a good time.â
The three of us entered the elevator with a few other people who were going up with us. Once the doors opened I led Maxon forward until we reached one of the windows and he put his paws on the glass wagging his tail happily. âPretty neat isnât it, Max?â He barked in response to me.
Will joined us looking out the window seeing all the city buildings from this high up. âAnd here I thought the hospital balcony had a view.â He chuckled in awe never being up this high.
âThis is the second time I have been able to enjoy being this high off the ground. When you look out the side of a helicopter itâs not the same since youâre going off to war.â I held my mouth opened just living in the moment with the building lights shining all over the nightly windy city.
An idea popped inside the ED docâs head where he took out his phone nudging my arm. âLetâs do a picture up here.â
âYeah but youâre getting in it too.â I told him bending down on a knee to be level with Maxon.
Will held the phone up wrapping one arm over my shoulder. âOne, two, three. Got it.â He hit the camera button a few times showing me the picture of the three of us.
âWeâre pretty good together. Happy anniversary, Mal.â Will leaned down kissing me softly on the lips with a smile.
I smiled into the kiss leaning up on my toes, wrapping my fingers around the tea shirt he was wearing. âHappy anniversary, Will.â
Hearing footsteps entering the locker room I bent my head down into my knees trying to still process that phone call. I wasnât prepared to get deployed out after getting the leg brace. And now Will and I were in a really good place, so what was he going to think now. âHey Mallory, Mills wants to know what type of pizza you want. Woah, hey whatâs wrong?â
âHuh â oh itâs nothing Brett.â I attempted to lie hoping she wouldnât pick up on it.
She slowly came and sat down to me. âIf youâre crying then itâs clearly not fine. Iâm youâre friend you can tell me anything.â
âI got deployed, Sylvie.â
She covered a hand over her mouth in shock. âIâm sorry. Are you going to tell Will?â
âI donât have much of a choice in the matter. I just know I need to tell the truth of something weâre gonna have to deal with together.â I responded to my friend.
She noticed me slowly getting up and grabbing my normal gear to go home for the evening. âWhere are you going, Mallory?â
âIn case the Chief or Casey ask where I went. Just say I had an emergency come up but Iâll be back tomorrow.â Shrugging on my jacket I bolted out of the room and to my car needing to see my boyfriend sooner rather than later.
