Yay, next… chapter? Idk wtf I’m doing anymore. Here you go. Also, the CW contains spoilers.
CW: blood, like a fucking lot of blood, stabbing, (almost) death, description of dying, needles
-
Charlie and Ethan sat in the living room, watching reruns of Forensic Files. The sun had just gone down, and it would be another hour until Crow joined them for movie night. It was Ethan's turn to choose the movie. He was still undecided, and scrolled through lists of films on his phone in an attempt to find something. There was a knock at the door, and Charlie got up to answer it.
"Is that Crow?" Ethan asked.
"Don't know," Charlie answered, "maybe he got out of his meeting early."
As soon as he opened the door, Charlie had something smack him hard in the face. He was sent backwards onto the floor, slamming the back of his head against the wood. He tasted blood as it began to flow from his now broken nose into his throat. He then heard the door shut and lock. It took him a moment to regain his bearings and sit up, and when he did, he was immediately grabbed from behind by his hair and dragged.
Charlie reached up and clawed at their arm as he struggled in their grasp. They finally let go once they reached the kitchen. Then, Ethan walked in. His mouth was moving, but Charlie couldn't make sense of what he was saying. He put his hands up and slowly lowered himself to the floor until he was sitting. The assailant finally moved into Charlie's view, and that's when Charlie realized it was Silas. Silas kneeled down and pinched the bridge of his nose, making him yelp.
"I'm here for one reason, and one reason only. I believe in an eye for an eye. Your mate murdered mine; it's only fair if I kill his, too," Silas said.
Before he could muster a response, Charlie felt a dull pain in his abdomen, as if he had just been punched. Then, the same feeling occurred again just above the other spot. He couldn't look down due to Silas' hold on his nose. He could only look ahead, directly into his eyes. Silas grinned as he finally backed off and stood up straight. Charlie's eyes drifted down and saw that Silas held a knife in his right hand. It was stained with blood. Ethan stood up.
"Oh my god, oh my god, you-" Ethan spoke, cut off when Silas whipped around. He jammed the blade into Ethan's side, then his chest. Adrenaline gave Charlie enough energy to get to his feet. He threw himself at Silas and began to hit him until he was stabbed again, this time in the shoulder. He shoved Charlie back into a cabinet and punched him in the jaw. Charlie slid down and put his hands up to cover his face. Silas kicked his shin, then turned back to Ethan, who was holding himself up against the counter. He screamed and curled up the best he could to protect himself, but Silas slashed his cheek, then his arm. He grabbed Ethan and threw him down next to Charlie.
"I should just slit your throats," Silas said, "but I'm going to let you bleed out instead." He folded the knife and put it in his pocket before walking into the living room. He took Charlie and Ethan's phones and smashed them against the floor until he was sure they were broken.
"Good luck getting help now. I know you're the only ones on this floor," he said as he opened the door. "Fuck you," Charlie snapped.
Silas stepped out and shut the door with a slam.
The pain was really beginning to set in, and Charlie felt like his entire torso was on fire. His shirt was completely soaked with blood, and it was beginning to drip.
"What do we do?" he asked. Ethan grabbed the dish towel that was hanging from the oven and handed it to Charlie.
"Press this against the wounds as hard as you can," Ethan instructed. He gripped the counter above to get himself to his feet. Blood trickled down his arm and legs as he moved.
"Where are you going?" Charlie asked.
"To find help," Ethan replied.
He made it about five steps out of the kitchen before becoming overcome with pain and fell to his knees. Charlie couldn't get up, even using all of his remaining strength. He stayed slumped against a cabinet with the rag pressed against his side.
"I can't move," Ethan said, voice cracking, "it hurts."
“You just have to get to the elevator,” Charlie said.
Ethan took a few deep breaths before attempting to stand again. He had to use the furniture to hold himself up, but he was able to make it to the door.
“Help will be here soon. Stay awake, okay?” He said. Charlie nodded, and he moved into the hall to reach the elevator. Charlie began to focus on his breathing. It was becoming increasingly difficult by the second. He was unable to maintain pressure with the now blood-soaked rag, and decided to drop it. He observed all of the blood pooling around him now, and the only thing he could think about was how it was going to ruin the wooden floor. The intense burning he felt was turning to ice, and the room suddenly felt extremely cold. His vision was beginning to darken. He just wanted the pain to stop.
Stay awake.
His eyes shot open, then fluttered shut again. Keeping them open took far too much effort. He decided that breathing was more important. His breaths became more shallow with each inhale, and no matter how hard he tried, he failed to take in more air. He was panicking, until he wasn’t. Suddenly, nothing mattered anymore. He felt an intense wave of peace wash over him, and he slipped into its sea.
When the elevator doors opened on Charlie’s floor, Crow immediately noticed the blood in the hall. He was already anxious, as they hadn’t replied to his texts, and this sight had increased his anxiety tenfold. The trail of blood lead to Charlie’s door. It had been left ajar. He made sure his knife was in his pocket before he slowly pushed the door open. He saw Charlie and immediately ran to him, and pressed his fingers against his neck to check his pulse. Luckily, he still had a heartbeat. It was faint, but it was there. Crow grabbed a pair of kitchen scissors and cut Charlie’s shirt open. Upon seeing the stab wounds, he took off his jacket and pressed it against them as hard as he could.
“Charlie, can you hear me? I need you to wake up,” Crow spoke. Charlie didn’t respond. Crow looked around in a panic, trying to find something that would help him stop the bleeding. It was then that he remembered something. After their last run-in with Kendall, Mallory had given him a few vials of the healing serum. He had forgotten about them in the glovebox of his car - until now. Crow took off his belt and wrapped it tightly around Charlie’s waist to keep his jacket pressed tightly against the wounds. He ran out of the apartment and down multiple flights of stairs to the parking garage. He fumbled the keys as he tried to unlock the door, thanks to shaking hands and the blood making them slick. He finally retrieved the paper bag which contained the serums and syringes, then beelined it back upstairs.
He slid on his knees when he returned to Charlie, and dumped the contents of the bag out on the floor where it was clear of blood. Mallory hadn’t told him how much he was supposed to use, so he opted to fill an entire syringe. He slid the needle into Charlie’s neck, hoping the spot he chose was good enough, and injected the serum. Then, he waited. A minute passed, and nothing happened. He figured Charlie had built up a tolerance, and injected him with another syringe full. The risk of overdosing him was one he was willing to take. If an overdose didn’t kill him, then the blood loss certainly would.
Again, nothing happened. He checked Charlie’s pulse again - still weak, but there. He filled yet another syringe. It was the last of the serum. If it didn’t work this time, then-
The wounds began to heal. A minute later, and they had fully closed. Charlie suddenly drew in a sharp breath, and he opened his eyes. Crow threw the empty syringe aside and grabbed him, pulling him into tight hug. He began to sob against Charlie’s shoulder.
“Don’t you ever scare me like that again,” he mewled.
“How did you…” Charlie trailed off, noticing the empty vials and syringes scattered on the floor amongst the blood. Crow loosened his hold on him and pulled back to look at his face. He moved a bit of hair from Charlie’s forehead, then held his face in his hands. He sniffled, and his expression turned serious.
“Who did this?” He asked.
“It was Silas,” Charlie replied, “he was saying some shit about ‘an eye for an eye’. I- wait, where’s Ethan?”
Crow’s eyes widened.
“Oh my god,” he gasped, “he was with you, wasn’t he?”
Charlie nodded. “He went to find help. He got fucked up just as bad, if not worse than me.”
Crow sat back and retrieved his phone from his pocket. He looked up the number to the nearest hospital, and asked if Ethan was there. The answer was “no”. He got the same answer for the next three hospitals he tried.
“I saw the blood in the hall, but none in the elevator, even though the trail lead to it,” Crow said.
“Was there any blood in the parking garage?” Charlie asked.
“No,” Crow replied, “but now that I think about it, I noticed that the asphalt was wet, like it had been hosed down, when I was first coming up.”
They both had the same realization at the same time. Crow went to his contacts and began dialing Mallory.
“What?” Mallory answered.
“I need you to track down Silas right now,” Crow demanded.
“What- oh, god,” Mallory replied, “alright, let me get ahold of Nikolas. What’s going on? Is Charlie okay?”
“He’s fine now, but Silas broke in and attacked him and Ethan. We think he might have Ethan now,” Crow explained.
“Fucking hell. Okay, give me a few minutes, I’ll call you back,” Mallory said.
Crow sighed as he set his phone down on the counter. He turned the ringer all the way up to make sure he didn’t miss Mallory’s call. Charlie stood up slowly. Despite the serum, he was still dizzy, and had to try hard to maintain his balance.
“Go have a shower. I’ll come in and update you if he calls back while you’re still in there,” Crow said.
Charlie wanted to protest, but he just as badly wanted to get the copious amount of blood off of his body. He stripped of his cut shirt and blood-soaked shorts in the kitchen before heading into the bathroom. Five minutes into his shower, the water was still stained red. He had to scrub himself head to toe three times to get all of the blood off of his body. Once he was certain it was all gone, he got dressed, and rejoined Crow in the main part of the apartment. Crow was on the ground with a trash bag, a bottle of bleach, and three rolls of paper towels. He had somehow managed to clean up most of the blood in the kitchen by the time Charlie was out of the shower.
“It didn’t stain the wood,” Charlie observed aloud.
“It’s linoleum, not real wood,” Crow replied.
“Oh. Uh, has Mal called back yet?”
“Not yet.”
Coincidentally, Crow’s phone began to ring. He dropped the wad of paper towels he was holding and answered the call.
“Hello?” he said.
“Hello. We’re tracking him, and he’s driving toward Reading. I’m sending the info to you now,” Mallory said.
“Okay. Where are you?” Crow asked.
“In town, actually.”
“Good. Can you meet me here now?”
“It’s pretty late, but I suppose.”
“Okay. We’re going to go find this bastard and get Ethan.”
“We are? Right now?”
“Did I fucking stutter?”
“Er, alright. I’ll be there soon.”
As soon as they hung up, Crow began dialing someone else. Charlie watched him pace around the kitchen with his phone to his ear.
“Hey. I know it’s late, but I need a favor. Can you be at Charlie’s ASAP? Long story. Okay, thanks. See you soon,” Crow said.
“Who was that?” Charlie asked.
“Basil,” Crow replied, “I’m having him come sit with you while we’re gone.”
“I’m not going?”
Crow sighed as he went back to cleaning the floor. Charlie folded his arms. He wanted to go. He was the reason Ethan was in this mess, and he was going to get him out of it.
“I want to go,” Charlie said.
“Charlie-“
“I’m not going to argue with you. I’m going.”
“No. I’m sorry, but I can’t let you go. You need to stay here,” Crow said.
“Why?”
“Because I said so.”
Charlie walked away and slumped down on the couch to silently fume. There was a knock at the door a few minutes later. It was Basil. Crow let him in. Basil saw the remaining mess and offered to finish cleaning while Crow cleaned himself up. Crow gladly accepted his offer, and went to quickly change into a fresh set of clothes and wash the rest of the blood from himself. When he was done, Mallory had just arrived, and Charlie was trying to convince him to convince Crow to let him join them.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea,” Mallory said.
“What isn’t a good idea?” Crow asked.
“He wants to come with,” Mallory replied.
Crow sighed. “Charlie, I already told you no.”
“But you didn’t give me a good reason,” Charlie argued.
“I cannot handle you getting hurt again. Not tonight, not ever. You are staying here, and that’s final,” Crow asserted, almost hissing. Charlie groaned.
“Are you ready to go?” Mallory asked. Crow nodded. He grabbed his phone and keys and they started out the door.
“You be good. I love you,” he said to Charlie. He shut the door before Charlie had a chance to respond.
“That’s the first time he’s ever said that to me,” Charlie said.
“Really?” Basil asked.
“Yeah.”

Holding one large box in one arm I had two smaller ones on top of it. I hit the front desk button on the outside of the building hoping someone would be coming soon. I was nowhere near done unpacking my car and I had my best furry friend sitting at my feet. “Don’t worry, Maxon. Somebody should be coming to let us in.”
“Do you need some help?” Glancing over my shoulder I heard a guy’s voice call out for my attention.
I hesitated to hope I could do it myself. I had decided to move out at the age of eighteen with myself, my dog and some money to my name before I headed to basic training. “Oh no. I um - think I have it.”
“I don’t know about that. I’ve only lived here for a few months but it’s rare most people are mingling in the lobby this late at night.” The guy explained walking up the small set of stairs to stand beside me.
I pressed the button again looking through the small glass of the door not seeing anyone. “I’m really fine. We’re gonna be fine.”
“We. So, what’s this guy's name?” The stranger eyed the dog laying at my feet. Maxon lifted his head when the guy bent down reaching forward to touch his fur to which I gave a head nod in agreement. “Hey bud, I’m Will. Uh - I actually should be introducing myself to you first I suppose.”
I groaned, getting tired of holding the boxes in my arms. “Ugh! Sorry I didn’t think to introduce myself but clearly you seem to be right about nobody working at the front desk.”
“Oh here, let me help you.” Will rose to his feet sliding a key card in front of the scanner before the door was unlocked. He reaches over taking the boxes from my arms.
“You don’t have to take those.”
He responds. “It’s no big deal. Can you get the door though?”
“Sure. Maxon, come.” I patted my leg signaling him to follow me when I held the second door open for Will to walk through and we followed after his heels before letting the door shut behind me. “Thank you, Will. I can take it from here.”
He set the boxes down, eyeing me. “Do you live in this building? I haven’t seen you around before Ms...”
“I actually just got my keys to live here a few hours ago. So, I guess that makes us neighbors.” I tucked a piece of hair behind my ear, sticking my hand out towards him. “Mallory. Mallory Easton.”
He shakes my hand smiling. “William Halstead. But I prefer everyone to call me Will.”
“It’s nice to meet you, Will. Oh, and you’ve already met my dog Maxon here.” I gesture my freehand down to my dog who was sitting at my feet with his tail slightly wagging back and forth.
Will bends down picking up the boxes a second time tilting his head towards the stairwell that was near us figuring it was more comfortable if we weren’t just chatting in the lobby. “Why don’t we get the rest of your stuff upstairs and then we can keep chatting over some late-night coffee or something.”
“That sounds good to me.” I agreed with what he offered, and we went upstairs until we were standing outside of my room number 218. I opened the door with my key feeling slightly embarrassed that there was a bunch of boxes scattered about. I wasn’t planning for company so this must look like a tornado hit here. “I’m sorry the place is a wreck.”
Will sat the stack of boxes on the ground next to some others dusting his hands off on his blue jacket. “It’s okay. You’re just moving in. No biggy.”
“Yeah I guess so. I’m just embarrassed cause I wasn’t expecting company.” I shrugged my shoulders hearing Maxon rummaging around one of his toy boxes finding a red fireheighdrent toy. He held it in his mouth and just started throwing it around like crazy so we could hear the annoying squeaking clearly.
Will chuckled flashing a cheeky smile. “He sure likes that toy doesn’t he?”
“One of his favorites yeah.” I glanced down at my phone seeing it was getting close to midnight. “Hey Will, I should probably let you go it’s getting late.”
He waved his hands at me in defense. “Not for me. I work in the ED, never a normal eight hour work day for me.”
“Oh wow.” I gasped not expecting that from him but I then eyed the clothing he wore which was a pair of red scrubs underneath his coat that I hadn’t noticed until now. He had auburn hair and deep brown eyes making him not too bad on the eyes to look at, but of course I’d never say that.
He pulled me from my train of thought. “Hey I think I’ve got some beers stashed away in my apartment. Would you want to share one with me. Toast to being new neighbors and all.”
“Sure. That’d be great.” I accepted so our first night there Maxon and I spent it with him, never knowing our lives would change forever after what happened when I went into serve.
5 years later
Blinking my eyes open I felt my body laying on a table. I could hear some ringing in my head and I felt like I had an intense headache for an unknown reason. I attempted to look around the room seeing I was in the medical tent on the base. Trying to sit up the tent flaps opened revealing our head medic Owen who rushed over to me. “Woah Easton, lay back down. You need to rest.”
“Dr. Owen, I’m fine.” I told him trying to get off the table again.
He puts his hands on my shoulders making me look him in the eye. “Do you remember what happened on mission 5025?”
“You mean the one we went on a few days ago. Of course. Maxon and I were responsible for locating the bombs before the response team went in to catch the cult leader.”
The doctor scanned his eyes over my face. “Do you know what the outcome was?”
“Yes. We – uh wait a second. I don’t remember it at all.” I tried wracking my brain around it but there was nothing.
Dr. Owen tapped my shoulder before the tent flap opened again and I watched someone walk in with Maxon being on a leash. “Ms. Easton, I think it’s best for you medically to take some time off. Until we figure out what happened to you.”
“Ms. Easton, we’ll have your stuff prepared for you to go home for a few months. And Maxon is cleared to go with you as well.” The guy uncliped the leash from his dog collar and he ran to me putting his paws on my knees that were underneath a blanket.
Maxon moved his nose around staying on my right leg and nipping at it. I lifted the blanket curious as to what he was smelling and then I saw the reason for them asking me to leave for a little while. “Maxon, what is it boy. Oh wow – this is what you were talking about isn’t it doc?”
“Yes ma’am it is.” Doc Owen trailed off, lowering his gaze to the leg brace that was wrapped around my right leg. There was a bandage on my knee underneath the brace and my guess was it was because a bullet hit me the wrong way on the mission I couldn’t remember.
A few days later Maxon and I were riding the down exsculator with a bunch of people leaving or coming back in the Chicago airport. I carried my backpack on my left shoulder as we walked through the lobby looking for some food since we hadn’t been able to eat on the plane. “So, what do you want to eat, Maxon. Chicken, burgers or something else – woah hey Maxon. Maxon no!”
Maxon bolts away from my side and towards the direction of where we had come from the baggage claim. I bolted into a run after him as best as I could not used to the brace slowly me down. His paws scraped across the tile floor unit I saw a guy in a dark blue jacket get tackled to the ground and he bared his teeth down to the stranger. “Ugh!”
“Maxon – shit sir I’m so sorry. Maxon get off him. I’m – Will?” I wrapped my arms around his waist trying to yank him off until I saw the guys face in clear view over Mason’s head.
The doctor chuckled not bothered by it. “Long time no see, Mallory.” I slumped my shoulders confused on how he had even found him with this many different smells around us. Yet regardless I had to admit I had missed a certain Halstead brother.

Shutting the fire truck door I ran a hand through my hair that was in a ponytail. Brett closed up the ambulance door coming over to me with a cheerful smile on her face. “So when’s the wedding future Mrs. Halstead?”
“We’ve been tossing around the idea of getting married at city hall and then doing a bigger then if I come back from deployment.”
Brett snapped back at me sharply. “You mean when you come back from deployment. I cannot have one of my closest friends dying on me now.”
“Trust me, Brett. It isn’t the way I’d like to go. “I nervously chuckled clasping my hands in front of my chest hearing my phone vibrating inside my jacket pocket. “Speaking of my soon to be husband, hey Will.”
He switched the phone call to video where I saw he was sitting in the locker room he stored his work bag in at the hospital. “Mal, I just called Jay and he said he can get all our friends together before tonight at Molly’s to tell them the big news.”
“Will, everyone pretty much already knew when I showed up to work wearing your mom’s wedding ring. I think you only have to tell your hospital work friends about the fact that we’re engaged.”
He slightly rolled his eyes at me. “Fine, fine, either way I am super excited for tonight. I only get so many more days with my favorite girl and her dog.”
“Don’t remind me, Halstead!” Brett shouted over my shoulder.
Shaking my head I put my focus back on my fiancés. “Anyway, where we’re we?”
“I just wanted to call you and say I miss and I love you. And I am having Connor come over after work to help move your stuff over into my apartment. I already talked with the landlord, and she said it was no problem that we combined into one apartment if we do not miss our payment.”
Throwing my head back I smirked knowing he had most of this figured out way before we had our last date. “You are the best. Is there something specific you want me to wear tonight at Molly’s?”
“How about that short black and red dress we got at the store the other day.” Will smirked back at me.
My face began to turn red at the thought considering what we had agreed upon when I wore said dress. “I thought that was only to be worn in the apartment when we – you know..”
“No I don’t know. You might have to say it.”
I glared at the ginger head. “No way.”
“Then I guess you won’t get to kiss me until tomorrow morning.” Will teased me with a cheeky smile across his face. He playfully chuckled trying to be all serious.
Brett grinned leaning her body against the side of the ambulance vehicle. “You two are going to make great parents one day.”
“I think we’re far beyond the discussion of babies, Brett.” I glanced back over at her.
She shrugged her shoulders before the call alarm went off meaning we had a case to get tend to. “I wouldn’t be too sure about that.”
“I’m gonna miss you, Mal.” Will smiled seeing me glancing over my shoulder knowing we had a call to answer.
Leaning up on my toes I waved bye, finally climbing up inside the passenger seat of one of the fire trucks. Will watched the trucks pull out before his phone vibrates so he ends the video call. “We need to talk about something important. It may effect your soon to be wife and you. Meet me in the hospital parking lot after your shift.” – from Jay read the text message on his phone.
Two months later – Afghanistan
Running through buildings Maxon ahead of our unit tries leading us away from the firing squad. Bullets fly over our heads with my boots splashing in mud and blood. "Mallory, we're taking up heavy fire!" Luke called out as I fired a shot at an Afghanistan who jumped down from a window trying to kill us.
Maxon barks digging away a hidden room in the bottom of a hideout. I order the rest of my team inside but a bullet gets shot into Luke's leg. "Luke!" I pull him down into the room with Kyle jumping down last. Pulling the door closed with the attached rope between his teeth. Tearing a piece of my shirt off Luke tried to talk.
"Mal go, get the others out of here-" I cut him shacking my head no with my ponytail falling over my left shoulder.
"Stop talking Luke. I'm not leaving you. If I can help you in some way I'm sure as heck going too." Kyle suddenly tugged my shirt when Luke and I are on our feet, dragging us outside with the others. "What is it-" I cut myself off collapsing into the dust hearing rounds of gunfire and an explosion ringing in my ears.
The next time I opened my eyes I felt a cold wet rag being dabbed against my forehead mintues before I was able to realize that it was my former Doctor who treated my leg when I returned home the first time. He placed the rag down on the nearest table picking up the chart that he had been taking notes down on about something. “Ms. Easton, I have been waiting for you to get some more rest. I have news I need to talk to you about.”
“What are we talking about, Dr. Owen’s?” I questioned him still slowly regaining consciousness.
He flipped over another page from his chart. “After the explosion I ran some tests just to make sure you were alright and weren’t injured. And I found something when one of my female nurses suggested a change in the physical appearance of your stomach. I have to ask when was the last time you had your period?”
“Um – I know I had it before I was deployed out here. Why do you need to know?”
Dr. Owen’s lifted his gaze up from the clipboard. “It appears that you are two months pregnant, Ms. Easton. Given the circumstances I have called you Lieutenant and he’s decided that we’re sending you home. So congratulations are in order for you and the babies father.” My mouth hung opened in utter shock where I couldn’t believe what he had just told me. I knew Will and I had slept together but I didn’t think it would only take one time for that to happen. We couldn’t possibly be parents, we weren’t even married yet.

One Year Later
Running as fast as my feet could carry me I abandoned the building that was on fire falling down onto the ground tripping on some wood that had fallen off the house because of the fire. I groaned blinking my eyes seeing Casey rushing to my aid where he yanked me up before our bodies got thrown forward by an explosion of flames. “Easton! Ugh – are you alright?”
“Yeah. I – I think so. How are you?” I forced myself to my feet as best as I could offering him my hand helping him off the ground. Brett and Dawson had already left in their ambulance with the patients that needed o go to East Mercy hospital.
Casey removed his firefighter helmet from his head running a gloved hand through his hair. “I’m okay. I’ve been in tougher situations than what we had today.”
“Hey chatty Kathy’s let’s get back to the house. Mill’s has food going in the oven and I’m hungry!” We turned our heads in the direction of the fire truck that Kelly was climbing in the backseat.
Casey and I made our way back over to the fire truck where we made our way back to the house. Climbing out of the passenger seat my boots hit the stone concrete floor. I hung up my firefighter gear just walking around in a fire house 51 shirt, some blue jeans and my brown boots about to go get some food until my phone rang off inside my locker when I walked past it. “Hey, Halstead. I wasn’t expecting to hear a call from you this early in the day.”
“Are you Ms. Mallory Easton?” A computer operator voice responded through the phone.
“Yes. This is she. Who is this?”
“You’re call is now being transferred.” The operator answered back.
“Ms. Easton, this is Lieutenant Griffin. I have been trying to reach you for a while now.”
I ran a hand through my hair nervous to hear his voice after all this time. “I apologize for that, sir. I have gotten a new job with Firehouse 51. So, I haven’t been seeing your phone calls recently. Um, what exactly do you need to tell me about?”
“I must inform you that we need you and Maxon back for deployment.”
Slowly lowering myself down onto the wooden bench in front of my open locker I couldn’t believe what he had just said to me. “Sir, I - I have no clue what to say. I thought I was done – that I had finished my tour.”
“When Dr. Owen sent you home we believed that we had cleared everything from here. Unfortunately we had some new information come in from one of our guys. Somebody is planning on attacking the US soil.”
Sucking in a breath I felt like I was frozen in some sort of nightmare. I was finally with my best friend. I had found some more friends and gotten a new job that I was beginning to enjoy here. Now it might all get taken away from me. “Sir, how soon would I have to be deployed out?”
“I’d give it would be three to four months at the most.” He responded through the phone with a very heavy sigh meaning he didn’t care for the answer he had given me either.
“Lieutenant Griffin, when do I need to let you know that I have everything squared away on my end?”
He corrected my statement. “You have to remember Ms. Easton. This is the military you don’t have to give us notice. If we need you you’ll just have to follow the orders you’ve been assigned.”
“Yes, I understand sir. I’ll figure this out.”
He hung up the phone without another word. “I’ll be in touch. Good day.”
Sitting my phone down beside me I hit the lock button on my phone then turned it back on to show the lock screen that Will and I had taken with Maxon on our one month anniversary where we had went and done the tilt at the John Hancock Building.
“Two tickets for the 360 tilt.” Will handed asked the cashier woman at the front desk the money.
I was standing behind Will and Maxon was sitting beside me while I held his leash attached to the collar loosely in my hands. “Oh, I’m sorry ma’am. But he can’t be up there unless he is a service dog.”
“He’s actually a former Army veteran K-9. I think he meets that criteria.” I corrected her statement with a smile.
She nodded seeing Maxon wagging his tail happily at her. “Ah I see. Have a good time.”
The three of us entered the elevator with a few other people who were going up with us. Once the doors opened I led Maxon forward until we reached one of the windows and he put his paws on the glass wagging his tail happily. “Pretty neat isn’t it, Max?” He barked in response to me.
Will joined us looking out the window seeing all the city buildings from this high up. “And here I thought the hospital balcony had a view.” He chuckled in awe never being up this high.
“This is the second time I have been able to enjoy being this high off the ground. When you look out the side of a helicopter it’s not the same since you’re going off to war.” I held my mouth opened just living in the moment with the building lights shining all over the nightly windy city.
An idea popped inside the ED doc’s head where he took out his phone nudging my arm. “Let’s do a picture up here.”
“Yeah but you’re getting in it too.” I told him bending down on a knee to be level with Maxon.
Will held the phone up wrapping one arm over my shoulder. “One, two, three. Got it.” He hit the camera button a few times showing me the picture of the three of us.
“We’re pretty good together. Happy anniversary, Mal.” Will leaned down kissing me softly on the lips with a smile.
I smiled into the kiss leaning up on my toes, wrapping my fingers around the tea shirt he was wearing. “Happy anniversary, Will.”
Hearing footsteps entering the locker room I bent my head down into my knees trying to still process that phone call. I wasn’t prepared to get deployed out after getting the leg brace. And now Will and I were in a really good place, so what was he going to think now. “Hey Mallory, Mills wants to know what type of pizza you want. Woah, hey what’s wrong?”
“Huh – oh it’s nothing Brett.” I attempted to lie hoping she wouldn’t pick up on it.
She slowly came and sat down to me. “If you’re crying then it’s clearly not fine. I’m you’re friend you can tell me anything.”
“I got deployed, Sylvie.”
She covered a hand over her mouth in shock. “I’m sorry. Are you going to tell Will?”
“I don’t have much of a choice in the matter. I just know I need to tell the truth of something we’re gonna have to deal with together.” I responded to my friend.
She noticed me slowly getting up and grabbing my normal gear to go home for the evening. “Where are you going, Mallory?”
“In case the Chief or Casey ask where I went. Just say I had an emergency come up but I’ll be back tomorrow.” Shrugging on my jacket I bolted out of the room and to my car needing to see my boyfriend sooner rather than later.

Slipping on a light red dress that fell down to my ankles Will and I had called into work for the evening so that we could have the whole time to ourselves. Maxon was being watched at the Firehouse by Brett so we had no real worries. Hearing a knock on my door I pulled it open shaking my head at him. “You know you wouldn’t have to knock if we were living together.”
“I know but I like the idea of coming over and not knowing what you’re gonna wear on date night.” He chuckled standing in the doorway. “You look beautiful by the way.”
“You look nice too.” I eyed him and down dressed in some dark blue jeans and a black dress shirt. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him in a full on suit but I bet that is a sight to see for sure.
Will held out his hand for me to take. “So shall we head out for dinner?”
“We shall, Dr. Halstead.” Placing my hand in his he rolled his eyes.
“I’m not at work, Mal. Just call me Will.”
Clicking my tongue I closed my door and locked it behind us before we headed down to the lobby area of our apartment building. “Uh Will we might have a slight problem.”
“Shit!” He cursed under his breath running a hand through his hair. “This is not what I had planned for tonight at all.”
Raising a brow at the auburn haired man beside me. “What’s so special about tonight?”
“I wanted to take you out to dinner. I wanted to buy you your favorite dessert before we went to the fairs wheel that you’d told me you’d never been on. And then I’d - it’s not gonna be here. Come on.”
I giggled when he grabbed my hand dragging me back to the elevator and we headed right outside our apartment doors. “Will! What are we doing - what are you - oh my god.”
“Mallory, I know you haven’t been in my life since we were kids. But it feels like I’ve known you my whole life. You know me better than I’ll probably ever know myself. You are beautiful, smart and funny. And I’ll never get tired of your sarcastic remarks. But all in all, it’s your kind heart and love for helping people that drew me towards you and Maxon. So will you please marry me because I love you so much.” He had himself down on one knee with a tiny black box opened in his hands
Covering my mouth with my hand I laughed through happy tears I couldn’t truly believe this was happening right now. “Yes. Yes, Will.” He slides the ring on my left hand that he was holding onto.
Will rose up from the carpet floor kissing me deeply. “You’re not thinking we’re going too fast I’m guessing.”
“Not at all. Now kiss me, Halstead.” Looking up into his eyes I wrapped my arms around his neck bringing him in for another kiss. He wrapped his arms around my waist where we just held onto the other, deeply kissing and pulling at the clothing of the other until we broke the heated kisses for air.
Will held my face in his hands seeing a weak smile cross my face. “Hey, what’s wrong?”
“Will , I’m there’s something I need to tell you before we do anything further.” He nodded opening the door to his apartment where we stood near his bedroom after removing our coats and boots at the door.
“What do you need to me, Mallory?”
Closing my eyes I paused for a moment worried that he would laugh at me or worse. Regardless of him being my best friend I knew that he had slept with other girls. I mean he’s attractive and an ED doc at Med, what girl wouldn’t want to be sleep with him. “Will, I’ve never slept with anyone before. So, before we went any further as an engaged couple, I thought you should know that I’m a virgin.”
“Mallory don’t think for a minute that it’s a bad thing. You’ve been waiting for the right person.”
Draping my arms over his shoulders I sent him a genuine smile. “And now I have. It’s you, William Halstead.”
“You’re my person too, Mallory Easton.” He leans down cupping my face in his hands and I deepened the kiss threading one of my hands into his ginger hair.
I broke the heavy kiss nuzzling my nose with his whispering up to him. “Will, I – I want you to take my virginity tonight.”
“I’d say we should wait until the wedding night, Mal-“
Cutting him off I passionately kissed him, gripping the fabric of his dress shirt in between my fingers until I broke the kiss declaring to him. “I love you, Will. I don’t want to wait till the wedding night. I’m not worried we’re going too fast, we’ve spent a long time to get to this moment. So I wanna sleep with you tonight.”
He kissed me back passionately and he gently dropped me down to the bed. My back hit the soft silk sheets before I rose up from the bed staring at him softly and brought a hand to his cheek stroking it softly. He leaned into my touch, and he lifted his shirt over his head and threw it to the ground.
"I'll go slow with you." He reassured me, grabbing my hand with his. "We can stop anytime if you want. I don’t want to make you do anything you’re not comfortable with."
"I want to do this." I said, wishing my heart would stop beating so rapidly like I was scared.
My best friend still silently looked at me, slowly kicking his shoes off. "You're sure you wanna do this?”
"Yes. I want you to be my first." My hands started to trace his form, I began to run his fingers up and down his chest softly while I began to feel his hand start to crawl underneath my shirt. He lifted my shirt off my head, throwing it to the ground only once breaking the kiss
He hovered over me and brought his lips down upon mine. I wrapped my arms around his neck and embraced more into the kiss. I felt a hard rock positioned at my lower religion, he placed his member at my center and looked up at me. "Babe, this will hurt a little. Just tap my shoulder twice if you want to stop."
He nodded and aligned himself against me before thrusting into me softly , I hissed out in pain as I felt him breaking through my wall, tears began to well in my eyes. "I’m sorry, Mal. I promise once the pains gone you’ll enjoy it." He moved slowly against her, I bit down on my lip hard trying to bear through the pain.
Within moments I felt the pain suddenly vanish and began to feel pleasure. I began to move against him and leaned up pressing my lips down upon his. I came moaning out loudly as I felt a wave of pleasure come over me. He came seconds later as I felt him emptying inside of med, both moaning and groaning until we fell back onto the mattress together.
"Will, can I ask something of you now that I’m your fiancé?” I whispered cuddling up into his chest giving us time to catch our breath.
Will stopped moving his fingers through my tousled hair. “Anything.”
“I don’t want to wait for the off chance that I may or may not come back from serving for our country again. I want to marry you before I am deployed. I want to become your wife when I have to leave with Maxon. Can you do that for me?”
Will’s soft gaze scanned over my face before he touched the side of my face bringing my lips up upon his gently. “I’d want nothing more than to call you Mrs. Halstead as soon as possible.”
“There is one more thing that we need to take care of. I’m finally gonna have to meet your brother Jay.” We kissed for a few minutes until a thought came to my mind where I broke the kiss running my hands up his bare chest.
Will tilted his head suggesting a place to start. “How about we have him meet us at Molly’s?”
“That sounds like a great idea.” I grinned up at him before he placed his hands on my hips, rolling himself onto his back so I was on top. Connecting my lips with his again we got lost in one another for the rest of the evening.

Please comment your thoughts and any ideas you have for this story
Parking my car outside of the hospital and in the parking lot. Getting out of the car I zipped up my firehouse 51 jacket heading towards the direction of the hospital entrance. I knew I needed to tell Will sooner rather than later. Going through the emergency doors in search of my boyfriend. Rounding the corner past the nurse's desk I found his familiar ginger hair. “Will! Hey, can I talk to you for a second if you’re not swamped.”
“Um, yeah I could use a minute to calm down.” He responded leading me into the area where their lockers were located to keep their none work items.
Shutting the door behind me after I walked in the room watching my boyfriend pacing the room back and forth with his chest heaving up and down with heavy breaths. “Are you okay, Will?”
“My – my father is in the hospital. My brother is here too and our dad ain’t looking too good.” He finally admitted.
I covered my mouth with a hand not sure what else to say. “Oh Will. I’m sorry.”
“Yeah it sucks cause I can’t be on to help him either with it being the hospital policy and everything. I just - I don’t know what to do. What’s uh – going on with you, Mal?” He asked me sitting down at the round table inside the locker room.
I paused clicking my tongue debating on whether or not I should tell him the truth. “I got a call from my Lieutenant this morning.”
“And what did he say?” He questioned softly.
I sighed dropping my shoulders heavily. “I might have to go-“
“Will, it’s your dad. He’s coding.” The head nurse named Maggie poked her head inside cutting me off.
Will and I ran out into the hallway of the ED and inside his dad’s room. I remained standing in the doorway seeing an older man laying flat on a hospital bed and alarms flashing on the computer screen with Will checking for a pulse. “No pulse. Bag him.”
“Wait he’s your dad. Shouldn’t another doctor run the code.” A blonde nurse touched his arm.
Will began pushing up and down on his dads chest. “You got one handy.”
“What’s going on here?” I heard a guys voice causing me to glance over seeing a guy that looked similar to Will just without the red hair coming into the room meaning it had to be his brother Jay.
Will had to shock his father a couple of times before the vital screening returned to somewhat normal as far as I could tell. “Get me Sam to check him out…” Will brushed past me and headed back into the room we had previously been in.
“Will. Will!” I called his name spinning around on my feet running after him and pushing my way through the door back into the locker room. “Hey, why are you calling in another doctor. I thought you’re dad was okay after some wave lines came back on the screen.”
He rested his hands against the metal locker. “They won’t last, Mallory. He’s - he’s already gone.”
“You’re saying he’s dead.”
He swallowed thickly nodding his head yes still never looking in my direction. “He’s brain dead. He ain’t coming back – the machine is the only thing keeping him alive right now.”
“Will, I’m so sorry.” I felt sorry for him and I knew I shouldn’t give him more bad news that I would be deployed out for another tour in a few months. He already had enough on his plate for today so I slowly walked about to leave the room.
But he called out to me by nickname with a croaking voice. “Mal, will you stay with me?”
“I don’t want to intrude on you and your brother grieving. That wouldn’t be the right thing to do. Besides I can’t have Brett covering my shift for much longer.”
Will turned around extended a hand out for me to take, sending me puppy dog eyes with tears. “Mal, please. I – I don’t want to be alone right now.”
I sighed deciding that he needed me more in this moment than the rest of the world. Crossing the room I wrapped my arms around his waist and he buried his head in the crook of my neck letting some tears finally fall. I slowly ran my fingers through his hair while we just stood there holding onto the other needing comfort.
“Thank you – um can we talk about something else right now. What did you come here to tell me earlier?” He drew his head back looking down at me.
I sucked in a shacky breath, holding onto his forearms. “I – I don’t know if this is the best time to tell you what my Lieutenant said to me.”
“Come on, Mal. It probably isn’t as bad as this. You can tell me anything remember.” He reminded me.
Slumping my shoulders I shut my eyes not being able to look him in the eye when I told him what was happening. “He told me this morning that they need to deploy me and Maxon out for another tour. He believes I will be deployed out in a few months give or take.”
“Mallory, It’s gonna be okay.” Was the words I heard coming from his mouth.
Lifting my head up from his red scrub shirt I sniffed through tears. “It is – but I thought – I thought you’d be upset about this. I mean we didn’t plan – even think this was going to happen. I was done with my tour because of my leg brace, at least that’s what I assumed-“
“Mal, look at me. I’m not gonna be upset over something out of your control. That would make me out to be an asshole of a boyfriend.”
I started crying happy tears this time laying my head on his chest, gently gripping his fabric of his scrubs. Will wrapped his arms around my waist resting his chin back on my head enjoying that he had calmed me down over this scary situation that was coming into our lives. “I was so afraid you’d be upset about me having to leave. I’m - I’m going to miss you so much.”
“I’m going to miss you and Maxon too. But knowing you you’ll get through this with no problem.” Will gave me a smile kissing my forehead. “Now let’s not focus on this. It took us this long to be together, that’s all that is important right now.”
I went back to our apartment building to spend time with Maxon until Will got done with his hospital shift. Yet unknown to me he took a detour before actually coming home visiting his brothers apartment on the other side of town. Jay opened the door seeing his older brother standing in the doorway. “What’s going on, Will?”
“Do you still got mom’s wedding ring?” He asked him where his younger brother let him walk inside disappearing to get the ring from the safe. Will smiled looking at the same picture that his girlfriend had on her phone with Maxon stuck in between the pair.

“Will, I am really sorry about him.” I finally broke myself from the daze he had managed to put me in. I wasn’t expecting to meet him until very late tonight as a surprised outside his apartment door considering we were right across from the other.
Tugging Maxon off of him by his collar it gave Will the chance to move onto his knees opening his arms for my doggy. “Come here, Max. How’s my favorite doggy been huh?” He ran his fingers through his fur causing his tail to wag happily.
“I’m guessing he thought you were following me or something. Given the fact that he was trained to always be aware of everything around us in the field.” I shrugged my shoulders at him.
Will paused his attention on Maxon looking up at me. “Don’t worry about it, Mal. Now come here and let give ya a welcome home hug.” He opened his arms wide out for me.
“I’ve missed you, Halstead.” I giggled flinging my arms around his neck and he buried his face into my hair holding me against his chest for a few seconds.
Maxon barked feelings left out causing us to separate from one another when Will ruffled a hand through his fur for a second time. “Since you guys just got in. How about I take you out for dinner?”
“Awe, Will. That’s awful nice of you.” I replied missing his kind gestures like this reminding me of the night we first met at the apartment building.
He eyed my bag sitting at my boots. “We could drop your stuff off and then head out. I’m not sure Molly’s will let Maxon inside but there should be some other places.”
“Hang on a sec. I have to ask how you ended up getting here at the same time as us. I mean I didn’t text or call you before we landed that would have given you enough time.”
He explained. “We had a patient call in to 911 and said they couldn’t make it to the hospital without help. I was just about to head back actually before I got tackled by your dog.”
“I am really sorry about that.”
He raised his hands up in front of his chest. “Stop apologizing, Mallory.”
“But if he had done that to someone else, they would have been really pissed. So, I just feel bad.”
He sent me a bright smile. “Good thing you know me. Now are we getting dinner, or would you rather knock off those heavy boots on a couch and I’ll see you when I get done with my shift.”
“Hmm both options sound good to me. How about this we flip a coin and that decides what we do.” I suggested figuring the waiting would kill him. He was very smart, but I always kept him on his toes.
Will rolled his eyes reaching into his wallet taking out a coin. “Call it.”
“Heads.” I cheered watching him flick it off his thumb and into the air.
Will caught it in his other open palm. “Okay it’s head. So which option did you choose?”
“You get to take us out for dinner.” I sent him a cheecky grin with my hands behind my back leaning back and forth on my tippy toes.
He nodded reaching down at the same time as me grabbing the straps of the duffel bag that had my gear in. Along with my backpack that I was carrying on my shoulders until I caught up with Maxon. “Ah ah. Let me get this. And I’m paying for dinner no exceptions.”
“Alright Halstead.” I held my hands up in surrender watching him start walking forward and I followed him. Maxon barked getting up and following my hip on the other side of me.
By the time we had taken my stuff up and I had changed out of my clothes it was getting late in the evening. Will had called his boss and saying he had a family matter come up so he couldn’t come work in the ED tonight. Will decided to hang out on the couch with Maxon until I got changed. Opening the door I wissled making my dog lift his head up from his paws and peeking his head over the edge of the furniture. “Does this seem okay for tonight?”
“You look great to me.” Will shifts in his spot on the coach looking back at me.
I had switched into a tan tea shirt that had sleeves that went down to my elbows. Leaving my hair loose compared to normally having it up in a ponytail. “Awe thanks. Would you hate me if I said let’s go walk around and maybe get some food truck tacos.” I had kept my cameo pants on since I still had some bandages underneath the metal brace I had on my leg.
“Tacos don’t sound too bad to me.” Will got off the couch and Maxon jumped off the furniture heading to the door with him. The three of us made our way down to the pear and began our walk through the clear boardwalk.
I pause our walk leaning my elbows on the wooden railing my hair was somewhat blowing in my face. “So do you have any special gal in your life?”
“Nah. I’ve made a rule to not date my coworkers.” He put his hands together. “Although I do have this one named Natalie that I’m pretty close with. So what about you?”
I snorted out a laugh. “You think I’ve got time for a relationship when I’m looking for explosives Halstead?”
“I guess that’s a bad assumption on my part.” He chuckled.
“You think.”
He ran a hand through his auburn curls. “So how did you get the brace on your leg then?”
“So bout that. I don’t know how exactly. I’ve got some memory loss from our last mission according to one of the doctors.”
Will touched my hand closet to his. “I’m sorry to hear that.”
“It’s okay. Hopefully I’ll have my answer someday.”
He turns to face me reaching his hand up brushing hair out of my eyes and his palm touches my cheek. “Knowing you you’ll figure it out. You’re pretty smart in my opinion.”
“Thanks, Will.” I replied feeling his gaze focus on mine and my face turned slightly red. We remained standing like that for a few minutes. I definitely had missed seeing him more than I thought I would have, maybe more than friends but I’d never tell him that until I was certain.
Maxon suddenly barked causing us to break away from our current state. “Sorry Maxon. You must be hungry bud.” Will chuckled down at my furry pal.
“Onward to tacos!” I cheered throwing a fist into the air and Will draped an arm over my shoulder tugging me closer heading to the nearest taco truck.

Getting out of the Uber car I walked inside the firehouse 51 small door since the larger vehicle doors were shut most likely until they received a call for an emergency they needed to attend to. Seeing the back doors of the ambulance were hung opened and I saw some familiar blonde hair moving around. “Sylvie Brett!”
“Yeah that’s me. Can I help you – Mallory, what are you doing here?” She glanced over her shoulder sending me a huge friendly grin on her face.
I stopped walking when I was standing outside the doors with a hand on my hip. I was wearing my old Army jacket that I hadn’t felt like wearing after the day I returned home. “I have a few hours before Will comes and picks me up, so I figured I’d come and hang with you. “
“Awe that’s cool. Although I gotta say that today has been pretty slow. But I do have some good news for you. My boss told me when you come into his office he has an application available for you at the ready.”
“How about right now. I’m free for a little bit.” I suggested hopefully.
She nodded gesturing her head toward an office door. We walked inside the building turning a few corners until we stood outside an office that read Chief on the door. “Chief Boden, I’d like to introduce Mallory Easton. She’s the former Army k-9 officer I have been telling you about.” She lead me inside where I saw a tall black man wearing a white shirt sitting in a desk chair.
“It’s nice to meet you, chief Boden.” I extended my hand to the man causing him to rise from his chair.
He shakes my hand firmly. “Nice to meet you, Ms. Easton. Brett has told me quite about what you did in your friends building. You saved her life.”
“I wasn’t sure if the clot would hold. I just remember seeing some pretty bad wounds when I was deployed. Just followed my basic instincts.” I shrugged my shoulders in response.
“Well, it was very impressive. And that is one of the reasons I am considering hiring you to be on my team.”
I shake my head still making point that he needed to understand regardless if they both wanted me to work here in this fire department. “I appreciate the opportunity. Truly I do. But I don’t have the experience of a paramedic or a firefighter. I know I can take the course to learn but would you mind that I’d be having to learn everything and be on the team at the same time.”
“If you’re considering taking the job you can start taking the courses now. Once you’ve gotten through them you’ll have a job waiting here in a few months.” He explained leaning his back against his desk. “The fact that you are a former Army vet will boost your credibility to get through the programs.”
I parted my mouth open processing if I took the opportunity or not. In all honesty I was spending most of the time when Will was at work by myself. Maxon’s company could only do so much considering he couldn’t talk back. Being in this department would be a good distraction and I could help people that I couldn’t necessarily do when I was deployed overseas. “Fill out the application information for paramedic training and I’ll be seeing you soon.”
“Thank you so much, Chief Boden.” I smiled shaking his hand again before Brett and I exited his office and back outside to the trucks.
Brett paused in her steps hugging me before saying a word back. “I can’t believe you’re going to be working here.”
“Woah slow down, Brett. I’m not anywhere near completely getting the job yet.”
She breaks the hug and I sent her a smile. “I’m just excited for you is all. I’m not worried about you getting to work here. You’ll do fine given the injuries and situations you’ve been through.”
“Thanks for having high confidence in me.” I responded before a car horn started going off and I saw a familiar black car driving up to the open double doors. I knew I recognized the vehicle but wasn’t entirely sure till the driver door opened and auburn hair came into my view with that cheeky grin. “Will!”
He shut the door coming over to us. “Mal. Sylvie.”
“What are you doing here. I thought you didn’t get off work until 5. It’s 3:50.”
He shoved his hands in the jacket he wore over his red hospital scrubs. “Natalie agreed she’d take on the rest of my shift for me. Plus I knew I wanted to surprise you.”
“Awe.”
Brett chimed in. “Hey if you need somebody to watch your dog for the evening I’d totally be open for it.”
“That would be great. Thanks, Sylvie.” I hugged her back too as a thank you.
Will held out his hand for me knowing we both needed to change clothes before going on our first date tonight. “Are you ready to go then, Mallory?”
“Yep.” Placing my hand in his we started walking back to the car. “We’ll drop Maxon off here!”
Sylvie grinned calling back to us. “Treat my girl right, Dr. Halstead!” She watched us drive away from the firehouse feeling excited just like the both of us were about the upcoming evening.
5:30 rolled around by the time we had gotten back to our apartment building and changed clothes. I had slipped on some black leggings underneath a short orange shirt that fell almost down to my knees. Will was in some jeans, a green short sleeve shirt with a black jacket thrown over it.
“So where are actually going now. You haven’t told me a single thing about the plans.” I asked as we made the drive further into downtown once we had left Maxon with Sylvie.
Will had one hand on the steering wheel when he glanced over at me in the passenger seat. “If I told you what we were doing it would ruin the surprise.”
“You are terrible at keeping secrets around me.”
He scoffed with a chuckle. “I don’t know what you’re talking about, Mallory.”
“The first night Maxon and I spent in your apartment you attempted to blame Maxon for eating the last of the Oreo’s even though dogs can’t have chocolate.” I sent him a glare knowing I was right. “When in reality you felt guilty that you did it and fessed up telling me the truth two seconds later.”
He rolled his eyes recalling the moment. “That is completely different. This time I want this to be a surprise so you’ll just have to wait.”
The drive didn’t last too much longer before he parked the car outside of a restaurant I hadn’t been to before. He came around helping me out of the car so we walked inside arms linked with one another. The hostess led us to the nearest booth where we sat across from each other. “The waitress should be with you shortly.”
“I can’t believe you brought me here. I wasn’t expecting you taking me someplace like this. I thought you’d be taking me to Molly’s for drinks and dinner.” I chuckled picking up the menu seeing that they had pretty much everything on there you could think of getting.
Will picked up his own menu looking it over. “We can go to Molly’s another time if you want. But I’d thought since this is our first official date it should be something a little more special.”
“What can I get you two to drink tonight?” The waitress with her brown hair tied up in a bun while carrying a notepad in her hands.
Will and I responded at the same time. “Angry Orchard.” I snorted a laugh out seeing a huge grin get plastered across his face.
“Okay, I’ll be back to take your orders.” The waitress slowly walked away with her eyes lingering on my best friend and I watched her sway her hips back and forth trying to seduce him making me gag at the thought.
Focusing back on the menu I saw that they had a Mac and cheeseburger that sounds pretty good. I knew we were at a somewhat fancy restaurant but they still had it listed on the menu so I should give it a try. “What are you gonna get, Will?”
“I’m not really that picky. We can split something if you wanted to.”
The waitress came back taking out a pen. “What can I get you tonight?”
“I’ll have a Mac and cheeseburger with fries. Oh uh – were gonna share that.” I handed her back the menu and she scribbled something down walking away. She came back a few minutes with two plates in her hands sitting it down in front of me.
Will cut the burger in half and we both silently ate. I take a few more bites before I saw some of the cheese coming out from under the bun and the next thing I felt was Will’s hand brushing against the tip of my nose. “You got something right there, Mal. There you go I’ve got it.”
“I guess you can’t take me anywhere, Halstead.” I chuckled watching him lick the cheese off his thumb.
We finished eating the burger and fries with him paying the bill where I thought we were about to go home for the evening yet that wasn’t accurate. We drove for a few minutes until I recognized the parking lot and building we were pulling up to. “Will, why are we at the hospital?” I asked shifting around in the passenger seat.
“I wanna show you something and don’t worry I’m allowed to take visitors in.” He unbuckled his seatbelt getting out first and I followed him towards the front sliding doors of the hospital emergency room.
We walked into the building going directly to the elevators. He hit the button that said up and then the one that was labeled roof. I kept trying to figure out what he was wanting to show me that was up there. The elevator doors slid open where I started to step out yet he covered my eyes with his hands causing me to laugh. “Will Halstead, what are you doing. If you want me to see whatever is up here, you gotta remove your hands.”
“You’ll see what I want to show you in a second.” He responded slowly walking the both of us forward out of the elevator.
I chuckled holding my hands out feeling my fingers touch the edge of a metal railing. “Don’t you dare let me fall over the edge of this thing.”
“I’d never let that happen. Now open your eyes in three, two, one.” He lowered his hands where I blinked my eyes a couple of times seeing all the building lights at the ground. From how high we were off the ground everything looked so small from here.
I dropped my mouth open twirling around on my feet seeing my best friend flashing me a huge grin on his face. “This is amazing. I’ve never seen the city from this high above before from the time I have been living here.”
“I’m glad you like it, Mallory. My boss pointed out to me that you could see the whole city from up here and maybe share some drinks. Like I told you earlier I really wanted this to be super special cause you’re special to me, Mallory Easton.” Will closed the gap pressing our chests together wrapping his arms around my waist, nuzzling his nose down onto mine.
I giggled nuzzling my nose back with his own, wrapping my arms around his neck. “You sure know how to show a girl a good time. And you’re special to me too.” Leaning up on my toes I captured his lips with mine, threading my right hand into his ginger curls. He leans closer deepening the kiss enjoying the moment.
Unknown to us my phone was vibrating in my purse that he had set down on the table near where we were standing. The caller was someone I wasn’t expecting to hear from since I had returned home.

I felt something nudging my side where I began walking up. I giggled peaking one eye open seeing a familiar dog nose poking me. Maxon was standing on his back legs and his front paws were on the edge of the bed. I blinked my eyes finally clearing my vision to be able to see Will. He was sitting in one of the chairs he had taken from the lobby and was currently sleeping in it. “W-Will. Uh Will!”
“Huh – what Mal. Oh good you’re awake.” He quickly sat up in his chair hearing me call his name where he scooted closer to me.
I shifted upright against the pillows behind my head as best as I could manage. Maxon laid down on the ground but remained close enough to my bedside. “Will – what happened after I blacked out?”
“You’re stitches got torn when you were crawling through the vents to get outside. Nat helped fix them and I didn’t bother to leave your side. So, she’s checking up on te other people that were injured in the hostage situation.” He explained putting his hands in his lap never removing his gaze from me.
I slumped my shoulders looking at my bandaged leg. “I wish I could recall that last mission. To know what caused me to have to wear a brace for probably the rest of my life from the looks of it.” The brace velcro had clearly been fixed and it laid on the end of the bed, not attached to my leg probably until we knew I wouldn’t rip the stitch work again.
“Could you talk to the doctor that put the brace on?” He asked me.
Shaking my head no I doubted he would know anything. “He’s back in Afghanistan. It’s not easy to contact him. Let’s just hope the stitching holds.”
“Hey, I’ve got to check on another patient of mine. But I’ll be back in a little bit. If you need anything just press the red button and I found your phone. There’s a tv remote too. I’ll bring you food- “
I held up my hands in surrender laughing at how ridiculous he sounded. “Will, slow down. I will be fine. If I need anything I will find some way to let you or someone else know what I need. Go do your job.”
“I’m being too much aren’t I?” He asked nervously.
I sent him a weak smile. “Just a little. We survived a shooter so calm down.”
“Sorry, Mal. I’m - I was just really worried about you.” He admits rubbing the back of his neck slowly walking backwards out of the room and down the hallway. “I’ll see you later.”
Unlocking my phone, I scrolled through a few different apps on my phone knowing I could watch tv in a few hours afterwards. Maxon made a noise almost sounding like a snore where I peeked over the edge of the bed. “Hey Raegan, there’s something I need to tell you. But you have to promise that you won’t go over the top and freak out when I tell you.” I warned the familiar tall blonde best friend that I was still close with from high school.
“It depends on what news you have to tell me.” She responded waving hi to me when she turned on it on video call to make it more personal.
I paused before answering her. “It’s something with me and Will.”
“You’re talking about your Dr. Redheaded Neighbor!” She squealed through the phone. “Tell me, tell me, tell me!”
I put a finger up to my mouth shooshing her. “Be quiet. In case you didn’t realize I’m in the ED and not entirely by myself.”
“Just tell me Mal.” She begged me with curious eyes.
Throwing my head back against the pillows I debated on how to start telling her what had happened. I had barely had time to process it properly for myself before telling her. The best way to start was just get it out. “I kissed him – I kissed Will. There was this teen girl that came and her ex-boyfriend who was a teenage too came in with a gun. He – he nearly shot me till Will pushed me and Maxon out of the way. Does a best friend do something like that?”
“Woah slow down. First off did you Freaking Kiss Will Halstead!” Raegan squealed throwing her hands up in the air cheering like she had just gotten her favorite toy.
I glared back at her. “Did you hear the part of my rambling where I almost got shot or was that the only thing you heard!”
“Yes, I heard that. But the important parts are you kissed him, and I can definitely tell you best friends that are dudes definitely don’t put their life in front of a bullet for just anyone.”
I nervously played with a strand of my hair between my fingers. “So, you think that he might have feelings for me?”
“Duh. Hell yes!” Raegan smacked herself on the forehead thinking that was the dumbest thing I had ever said to her in our whole lives.
I rolled my eyes replaying the moment over in my head. I was so concerned for Maxon during that moment that I didn’t care what really happened to me and whether or not I got shot. Next thing I knew my body was thrown into the desk and I didn’t have a clear view until Will had already been shot. “If you were me, what would you do, Raegan? I mean we’ve been friends for years. But I - I don’t want to ruin what we have if he doesn’t feel the same way.”
“I get what you’re saying, Mal. But don’t wait or never tell him otherwise someone else might beat you to the punch.” She warned me.
I explained to her simply. “He made a rule not to date coworkers.”
“Doesn’t mean someone else won’t ask him out. He’s quite a catch, Mallory. You’d be a fool if you didn’t tell him how you feel.” My best friend gave me a hopeful smile.
I nodded nervously chucking. “You aren’t just saying that because you want to be my maid of honor.”
“How dare you say such a thing!” Raegan put a hand over her heart pretending to be offended by my words. “I care about your happiness. Yet I won’t lie and say that I am not hoping you two get married otherwise I might never get to be your maid of honor.”
The curtain began to move causing me to shove my phone still on video call underneath one of my pillows seconds before I saw Will coming into the room walking with a crutch under one arm. “What’s this about a Maid of Honor. Are you getting married, and I haven’t met the guy?”
“Trust me the day I decide to get married you’ll be the first to know.” I smirked at him playfully, eyeing his foot that he hurt. He seemed to be walking fine but I was still concerned. “I meant to ask earlier how’s your foot?”
Will come to sit down in the bedside chair like earlier. “Dr. Rhodes had to remove a small bullet. I got lucky that it didn’t hurt me too bad. It’s just sore and I’m gonna have to manage keeping tons of pressure on it.”
“If that’s the case, why are you still working. You should be back at your place resting like he told you.” I shifted sitting more upright and not putting so much weight on the pillows.
Will clicked his tongue giving me a half smile. “I wasn’t gonna leave you here alone.”
“Oh, I would’ve been okay. I have Maxon.”
He nodded with a reply. “I know. I still wanted to be here with you.”
“He likes you!” Raegan screams through the pillow where I shoved it over my mouth to muffle her voice.
“What was that?”
I lied hoping she wouldn’t try that again. “Uh nothing.”
“Hey so I – um was thinking of this idea, and you can decline if you don’t want to but – would you want to come stay at my place since we both might need some help moving around till, we heal from our injuries.” Will clasped his hands together in his lap, avoiding my gaze and watching Maxon who was still passed out on the floor.
I tilted my head touched by the offer. “Are you asking me to move in with you, Halstead?”
“It wouldn’t have to be a permanent thing – unless you wanted it too. It’s just an offer so you’re not alone.” He said finally looking up at me.
I smiled tucking hair behind my ear. “It won’t be so bad to live with you for a little while.”
“Great! I’ll start seeing if we can’t start the paperwork to let you out of here.” He got to his feet grinning brightly and closing the curtain behind him. I waited until I heard his voice far down the hall before yanking my phone out from under the pillow.
“What do I do now?” I asked my best friend clutching the phone in my hands.
She smirked at me proudly. “Find a way to make him your boyfriend and keep me updated, Mallory.” I finally hit end call and throw my hand over my mouth thinking a mile a minute about what I was about to get myself into.

Maxon made a noise looking up at Will with a tilt of his head. “What do you think that conversation is going to be about, Max.” Will just sat down with him laying at his feet simply wanting to wait until she got back.
Sylvie and I exited the ED going to sit down on one of the benches outside the building so we could talk. I wasn’t sure what she needed to talk to me about or how she found me here at the hospital in the first place. “So, I have to ask how the hell did you find me here exactly?”
“I looked you up on the internet. Facebook showed some pictures with you and Dr. Halstead. I searched through his page and found out that he worked here. The chance of you being here still at the same town was a happy coincidence.” She explained and I nodded somehow not finding that creepy given the smile she had given me.
I clicked my tongue intertwining my hands together in my lap. “Okay, so – what exactly did you need to talk to me about privately?”
“I have been trying to rack my brain about why I couldn’t get you out of my head and it finally came to me. It’s because you clearly aren’t ready to be done helping people.”
I eyed my right leg wishing that I didn’t have the brace on all the time. “Maybe I am. I mean I had to be discharged from Army after I got injured. I don’t remember the last mission I only know I came home with this on me probably for the rest of my life.”
“Look I have been thinking about offering you a chance to come work at Firehouse 51 or at least consider looking into helping out there.” The female firefighter sends me a smile again.
Running a hand through my loose hair I sighed thinking about what she was offering. “Wow. That’s - that’s a huge offer. I mean I don’t have any training to be a Firefighter or Paramedic like you guys.”
“You’re right but you’d be able to learn on the job and take courses if you really want to look into what I’ve mentioned here.”
I asked her meeting her blue eyes. “Is this even allowed with your boss?”
“If you truly are considering saying yes, I will speak with him as soon as possible.” She reached forward touching my knee.
Since coming home I was just focusing on trying to adjust getting back to civilian lifestyle and getting spend more time with my best friend again. “I’ll let you know. Uh here – I can give you my phone number.” Taking out my phone I handed it to her showing my phone number.
“Thanks. Just call me, Mallory.” She put her number in my phone handing me my phone back.
The hospital sliding doors opened causing me and the firefighter to turn our heads and attention towards them. I saw Maxon coming towards me before I saw Will slowly running over to us. “Raegan is awake and asking for you. If you want to see her now.”
“Oh my gosh. Ms. Brett, I will certainly let you know my answer later.” Jumping up onto my feet Maxon bolted to the doors with me and Will following him inside the hospital doors. I entered the room she was supposed to be in seeing her sitting somewhat upright in her bed, smiling when I rushed to her bedside. “Rae, I was so worried about you. I – I thought something really bad was going to happen.”
She blew a raspberry at me. “I’m too stubborn to leave you alone. Especially when you haven’t fessed up and told your Redhead how you feel.”
“You know the thought of you dying is more important than my romantic life.” I sent her a glare.
She crossed her arms over her chest huffing at me. “Okay but you know that I’m right. Halstead from what I can tell isn’t very good about hiding his feelings. So, I see no issue with getting it over with and telling him that you have feelings for him too.”
“But what if he- “
She held her up left hand with an iv sticking in her arm. “I will take this out which will set off all the alarms and go find himself. Do you really want me to be the one to tell him what you won’t.”
Holding up my hands up in surrender in front of me I begged her. “Don’t you dare do anything like that. I’ll tell him soon okay.”
“You better.” Raegan sent me a warning look.
Pushing opened the apartment door I tossed my keys on the countertop the second I walked inside Will’s apartment while carrying in a pizza box that we had picked up on the way home from the hospital. Maxon jumped up onto the couch and he laid down in a curled-up position. Will came in shortly after sitting his bag by the door. “Oh, what a day. I gotta say I love being an ED doc but it sure wores me out.”
“At least now I finally kept up on my promise on bringing you this.” Spinning the pizza box around on the kitchen counter I drew the lid open and the familiar comforting smell filled the air.
He shrugged his jacket off ditching it onto the back side of the couch coming over in two long strides until his nose was right above the pizza box. “Ohh I’ve been needing this all day.”
“I gotta admit it is pretty good pizza.” I picked up a bite thinking back to my old home state. “I do remember the drive to Dominos wasn’t too bad either.”
Will set his piece of pizza down. “How dare you say bad things about me pizza..”
“I can’t help I’m from Indiana, Will.” I throw my hands up staring at him.
He glared at me across the kitchen island. “Dang country girl.”
“City slicker.” I did my best to hold a straight and serious face when I was looking at him but I only lasted a few more seconds. I bent my head down in my arms laughing my head off.
Will mirrored my laughter shaking his head. “Who would’ve thought that we would work together like this. Living together, me, you and Maxon.”
“We do make a pretty good trio.” Picking up my slice of pizza I take out a few bites before picking up another.
Will moved over to the couch sitting down with some pieces of pizza on his plate. “Do you ever think we’d still work together this great as a couple?”
“Wha – what did you say?” I nearly choked on the bite of pizza I had in my mouth.
Will’s gaze focused on me standing by the kitchen island sitting the plate down on the coffee table in front of him. I’ve been thinking for a while that I should have told you this much sooner. And so now I’m done waiting.” He rose from the furniture striding over to me until I held my hands up before he can say anything more.
“Will, hang on a second. I need to say something to you too. I – I just have been so terrified of what you would say.”
He rummaged around in his pocket holding up a random coin. “Let’s let luck decide this then. Heads, we say our feelings one at a time. Tails, we say them at the same time. And there’s no backing out.” Will tossed the coin up off his thumb and it landed down in his palm.
“What does it say?” I nervously gripped the ends of my tea shirt in my fingers nervous for his answer.
“Tails.”
I gulped. “Okay. 3 – 2 – 1.”
Will and I paused before uttering out at the same time. “I have feelings for you.”
Covering my mouth with my hands I felt some tears welling in my eyes. “I thought that you wouldn’t – um.” I didn’t know what to say considering I assumed he wouldn’t feel the same way since we’d been friends for over six years now.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” He asked me.
I started to respond to him but he cut me off. “I was afraid that our relationship would be ruined and that you wouldn’t feel the same way- “
He crashed his lip’s down onto mine where I gasped taking a second to process what was happening. I had imagined what it would be like to kiss him but now that it was happening I thought I was dreaming. I leaned up slightly on my toes kissing him back and wrapping my arms around his neck.
“Mal, Mallory, listen to me okay.” He drew back holding my face in his hands, smiling through happy tears. “Our relationship could never be ruined by you being honest with me. Cause I have always had feelings for you. Always have, always will.”
I grinned up at him gripping the fabric of his shirt. “So this is for real?”
“Yes, Mallory. This is real.” He sent me that familiar cheeky grin. “Now what would you say to me taking you out on our first official date tomorrow night?’
Leaning up on my toes I began the next kiss we shared. “I’d love that.” Will moved his hands around my waist holding me against his chest until we broke away knowing the pizza was getting cold.

I remained laying on the tile floor almost frozen at the sight before my very eyes. I couldn’t entirely believe what had just happened. I was somewhat prepared to get shot by the David kid. And then Maxon jumped in front of me, so I was somewhat prepared for that outcome. Yet the one I couldn’t wrap my head around was the fact that Will had pushed us both away and taken the hit in the end. What did it mean – best friends don’t do something so reckless do they?
“I’m sorry – I – I didn’t mean to shoot him.” David’s nervous voice drew me away from Will who was holding his injured foot. He had managed to scoot his body up against the nearest wall for some support.
I glared at the kid holding Maxon up against my chest. “So you did plan to shoot me. Great plan.”
“Hey watch your tone. I have the gun here.” David snapped at me.
I rolled my shoulders doing my best like I was taught to show I wasn’t afraid of the teenage father with a gun. All he was being was an idiot for shooting people and then demanding the doctors to help his ex girlfriend. “You can make threats at me all you want. But you forget that if you keep injuring more people that just means more work for the doctors and they might turn their attention away from your girl and your baby.”
“I won’t let that happen.” He told me.
I sniped shrugging my shoulders. “I don’t know trigger happy people don’t usually have good outcomes. But you do you man.”
“If you don’t stop talking I will shoot you.” David gripped the gun in his right hand.
Will croaked out in a worried tone, knowing this guy was unpredictable. “Mallory be quiet. You’ll only make him more upset.”
“I’m not afraid of him. Listen here David you shot my best friend and given that information I don’t care if you have that weapon pointed at me or not.” I snapped at him while Maxon growled under his breath with his ears pointing downward showing how fierce he could be and if I let him go, he could likely rip into his skin.
“Ahhh!” Whipping my head around I saw the pregnant girl cry out in pain where she lifted up her shirt seeing the baby shift inside of her stomach.
Natalie rubbed her hands over her belly. “You're completely dilated. We've have to deliver the baby.”
Lily the young girl shook her head no. “No, I don't want to push it out.”
“I know this isn't how you wanted it to happen but we cannot wait any longer.” She explained.
David asked rushing over to her room . “Can't you just do the c-section?”
“It's not safe to do it here. I’m sorry, Lily, but I need you to deliver this baby.” She told the girl.
I crawled forward seeing a handgun from the other officer hiding it underneath my shirt before he could get another firearm in his hands. Maxon got up helping me sneak back into the room. Will had managed to make his way in their so I rushed to his side. “Will, what were you thinking taking a bullet like that!”
“I couldn’t let him shoot you or Maxon.” He dropped his hands at his sides.
Smacking a hand over my face I groaned. “Will! That doesn’t answer my question.”
“Look it doesn’t matter why. You two need to just stay in here and we’ll get him out of here before he hurts more people.”
“Will, I’ve got to get out of here and get help. I saw SWAT outside before the windows were covered. I can help them.” I snapped at him with Maxon standing sternly at my hip.
Will paused trying to think of some way out till he lifted his gaze up seeing an air vent. “You thinking what I’m thinking?”
“Give me a boost, Halstead.” I nodded climbing up onto the bed taking the vent cover off and laying it on the bed.
Will put his palms together underneath my feet hoisting me up inside the dupt. “Be careful you two.” He lifted Maxon up till he could jump up inside and he put the vent cover in my hands.
“You be careful too, Will.”
I heard Will’s voice as he exited the room. “Dr. Manning is gonna need another set of hands to deliver your child.”
“Okay, yeah. Help her, help her, help her, help her, help her.” David demanded him.
Will was at the girls side holding her hand. “You've got this, Lily. Keep breathing.”
“I just couldn't let him take our baby like that, Lily. I could... I couldn't do it. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.” David apologized standing in the doorway of her room seeing her start pushing the baby to come out.
Yeah, you're doing great, Lily. Just keep looking at me, okay? Breathe. Breathe with me, Lily.” Will reassured her before I lifted up the vent cover and put it back in it’s place so he wouldn’t see we were gone.
I began crawling on my elbows and knees following Maxon’s tail that was in front of my face. We went through four or five different turns before we came upon a vent that showed the outside parking lot lights. “Bust through Maxon.” I instructed him figuring we didn’t have long.
By the time Maxon busted his head into the air vent and it fell o out allowing him to jump down towards the ground. Sliding down the wall I landed on my feet seeing multiple SWAT vehicles had surrounded the building. One of the guys came over to me. “Are you hurt ma’am?”
“Don’t worry about me. We need to stop the kid inside.”
“We’re handing it.” The lead guy spoke.
I raised a hand and Maxon batked harshly up at him. “Give me a rifle and let me take the shot. You will not do anything else but that.” He ran off in that direction before he gave me the weapon.
Looking through the shot hole I could somewhat hear what was happening. “No, listen, all we gotta do is get to the neighborhood, all right? Because I know people who'll help us get out. I promise, it's gonna be okay. All right?”
Lilly coughed barely staying awake after the delivery. “No. It's over, David. It's over.”
“If you change your mind, when you do, call my mom. She'll tell you to get in contact with me and the baby.” David turns around on his feet seeing the boss holding his kid. “Give me my son.”
“I can't do that, David” She said to him.
David aims the gun at the group in the room. “Get back. Get back. Everyone back against the wall now. Miss Goodwin, hand him over.”
She began walking backwards from him. “I said I'd help you, David, and I meant that. But I'm not giving you this baby.”
“I'm not leaving here without my son.” He growled.
She held the baby closer to her. “You don't have a choice.”
“No, you don't have a choice. I will kill everyone in this hospital before I leave my son.” David moves forward and I kept my finger on the trigger.
Will’s boss said stepping out of the way of the shot I needed to take and the kid walked in. “Then you're gonna have to start with me.”
One of the SWAT officers scolded me since I hadn’t taken the shot yet. “If you don’t take the opening. We’ll lose our chance.”
“I know what I’m doing!” I snapped at the guy, not removing my attention through the scope on the automatic rifle.
David stepped towards Will’s boss about to shoot her until I pulled the trigger shooting him in the back of the head. “Give me my son.”
His ex girlfriend cried watching his body collapse to the floor with blood pouring out. “David! No!”
“In case it wasn’t clear. I’m a former army vet.” I lowered the rifle glaring st the guy and the rest of the SWAT team bursts into the building.
The SWAT guy quickly avoided my gaze. “I’m sorry ma’am.”
By the time SWAT had gotten in I busted my way through the crowd of men frantically searching for Will. Maxon ran on my heels until I came in contact with the familiar auburn hair. “Will!” I called his name where he barely got the chance to turn around before I flung my arms around his neck.
“Offf! Mal, Mallory. I’m okay, I’m okay.” He caught my body wrapping his arms around my body hearing me cry into his shirt. “Look, there’s something I need to tell you-“
I cut him off not giving him the chance to finish his sentence after I held his face in my hands crashing my lips up onto mine. I felt him gasp and he slightly kissed back for a minute until I broke the kiss feeling light headed. “I um – shouldn’t have done that – umm Will.”
“Mal – Mal – Mallory!” He called my name quickly picking up my body seeing my leg was bleeding again, meaning we had a serious problem on our hands.

A few weeks later
Pushing opened the building door I let Maxon walk out first and I let it shut closed behind me. I walked down the steps and onto the sidewalk since I had made it a routine to walk him. Maxon’s tail wagged happily from side to side. Will had already gone into work and he wouldn’t be back until really late tonight. My phone started ringing in my pocket till I pulled it out. “Hey Will, what’s up?”

“I was just wanting to hear your voice. I’m on my lunch break so I had time to call you.” He responded through the phone.

I smiled even though he couldn’t see it. “Awe that’s nice.”

“Well, you wanna know something else. I think it’s time you officially meet my brother in person.” He suggested.

I snorted out a laugh thinking about most of the stories he told me about Jay. “Will, I love the idea. But don’t you think that I’ve basically already met your brother by the number of stories you told me.”

“Maybe. But you should still meet him officially in person. Now that you aren’t clear across the world looking for explosives.”

I sighed sitting down on one of the nearby benches. Maxon sat down at my feet with his ears pointed almost upright in the air. “I suppose you’re right.”

“I’m a doctor so.”

“William!” I scolded.

He came back at me hating when I called him that. “You know how I feel about that.”

“I’m sorry. How can I get you to forgive me?” I chuckled back at him.

He replied back. “Come to Molly’s later and meet my brother in person.”

“Fine Halstead. Just don’t be so pushy about it – ah!” I winced feeling some pain in my right leg where I moved my hand over the brace and the bandage that was underneath. I had been instructed somewhat on how to change the bandage and put the whole brace back together by Dr. Owen.

Somehow Will could sense something wasn’t right. “Mallory, talk to me. Are you okay?”

“It’s just some pain in my leg.” I winced a second time looking down at my leg hoping it would pass.

Will’s concerned voice came back at me. “Mallory, hey. You should call an ambulance and they’ll bring you here.”

“Will, I’ll be okay – ah shit!” I attempted to just get up and start walking it off but the next time I looked down at my leg a third time noticing some blood coming from my bandages. Maxon began barking and caught my body before it hit the sidewalk and I blacked out. “Will, call an ambulance…”

The next time I opened my eyes I was blinded by the ED emergency entrance lights that hung above my head. My back was laying on a push gurney and I heard a few medics gathered on either side of me. “Female in her early 30’s, bleeding from her right thigh, passed out in the ambulance briefly. Got the call from someone in this ED”

“That’d be me. Dr. Halstead.” I blinked through some tears looking forward to see Will rushing over to me. “Mallory, oh geez. Okay do you know where you are?”

I coughed out. “ED – Will where’s  - Maxon?”

“She had a dog with her when you found her correct?”

A paramedic replied. “Yes.”

“Where’s the dog now?” He asked her.

Another person from the ambulance came inside the door escorting Maxon towards me on a leash. “Here he is, Dr. Halstead.”

“Maxon – ugh!” I attempted to climb off the gurney but my right leg gives out from underneath me. I toppled to the tile floor.

Will caught me before the rest of my body could collapse. “Mallory! I’ve got you.” He put one arm underneath my knees and his other underneath my right arm, carrying me bridal style into the nearest checkup room.

I tried to reassure him when he sat me down on the bed. “Will, don’t worry too much.”

“Natalie!” Will called into the hallway before a woman with dark brown hair up in a ponytail came in.

She smiled. “I’m Dr. Manning. What do you need Will?”

“Help me check out her leg. I figured it would more comfortable if you did the exam.” He told his friend and I swore I saw his face turn red.

“Sure. So are you two together or something. I haven’t seen you around before?” She began looking over the brace on my leg, waiting to remove it. “Can I remove it?”

“Yeah.” I replied.

Will cleared his throat. “We’re just really close  - friends. Mallory is a Army vet that leads a K-9 unit to find explosives.”

“Very impressive. Thank you for your service.” She undid the velcro of the brace and underneath we saw some more blood coming through the bandages. “It appears that a part of the brace broke off and cut into your skin.”

I winced eyeing the brace laying on the edge of the bed. “I guess Dr. Owen didn’t have the right supplies on the base to make it the right way.”

“We’ll get you fixed up, Mallory.” Will loops my fingers through mine.

I nodded seeing Natalie take out a needle and thread eyeing Will. “Ah!” I winced a little when she began stitching up the wound but he never left my side till we were done.

Natalie left to see if someone could fix the broken part of my leg brace leaving us alone. Will drew the curtain back and my dog jumped up at where my feet laid curling up into a ball. “I’ll check on you two later. Just holler if you need anything.”

“Thanks Will.” He smiled slipping on the other side of the curtain.

A little while after Will had left me to check on other patients I heard the young girl who was pregnant in the room next to mine call her boyfriends name. “David.”
“ Don't worry, I'm gonna take care of everything.” The teenage boy named David suddenly drew out a gun from what I could tell when I heard a clicking sound when it was drawn.

The pregnant girl asked. “What are you doing?”
“ Whoa. David, put that down.” The girls father clearly tried to step in and calm the kid down.

Except that only that seemed to do was make the kid angry enough to point the gun at the father. “ You think I'm gonna let you come in here and steal my kid?”
“ Dad, Dad, Dad, no. Dad, stop!” The pregnant girl screamed and I covered my ears hearing the dad get shot.
A nurse declared into a phone. “ Security, code silver! Active threat in the ED!”

“ Dad! Dad!”
A female doctor in the girls room gasped. “ Oh, my God. David, no. David.” The woman doctor must have went to check on the dad who he was still aiming the gun at.
Another guys voice could be heard and I saw him come into view through the curtain clearly a hospital officer. “Drop your weapon!”

The girl was still crying. “Dad!  David!”
“Stop! Stop! No, drop it! Drop it! Now!”  David pointed his gun at the officer while holding the girls mom.

A nurse warned him. “Frank, listen to the man. Listen to him.” But he didn’t listen and he shot the officer next.

Maxon began to whimper where I covered his mouth with my hands again to muffel the sound. “Sshh Maxon. Ssshhh.”

“Hey, hey, hey. I said stop moving. Stop moving.” The guy was now holding the mom up against his chest pointing the gun at Will by the time I had crawled to the edge of the bed to sneak a peek.

The girl begged. “Dad! Dad, are you okay. Please help my dad.”

“I'm a doctor! I can help.”

I recognized Will’s voice where I attempted to get down from the table but more pain shot through my leg so I did my best to crawl on my elbows to the edge of the bed. “Will!”

“Get – get in there.”

Will pointed to the teen moms room with his index finger, sparing me a glance. “This room?”

“Yeah, yeah now!” David ordered him.

Will headed into the pregnant girls room. I sucked in a breath slowly climbing down the bed pushing the fact that there was a soreness in my right ankle. “Sneak crawl, Maxon.” I instructed him where I leaned part of my body on his and we walked to the edge of the doorway.

I tried to get a better view around the curtain but my hand slipped from Maxon’s back and I fell forward tearing the curtain. I rolled out onto the floor hearing the kid ask frantically. “Who are you?”

“I’m a patient here. And in case you didn’t know pointing a gun at the doctors isn’t going to make them want to help your girlfriend for long.”

David asked raising his tone. “Are you mocking me?”

“Just pointing out the truth.”

He aims the handgun at me. “You shut up or I’ll make you be quiet.”

Maxon suddenly leaped out of the room directly in front of me guarding my body. “Maxon! Uh!” I cried out watching the kid firing the gun right before someone tackled our bodies causing Maxon and I to slide across the floor and into the nurses desk.

“Ah!” I yanked my head up from the ground hearing someone else cry out in pain.

Covering my mouth with my hands I gasped in honor seeing Will laying on the ground holding his foot. “Will!” David lowered his gun and ran his hands through his hair frantically, while I caught sight of Will’s foot bleeding.

Who should Mallory have a friendship with besides Will? Let me know in the comments
“Stay put gang. Go search Maxon.” I held up my hand signaling for the rest of my team to stay back behind me. We were responsible for locating some hidden explosives that were supposed to be shipped out somewhere we weren’t sure of.
Maxon ran forward entering the house through the nearest window. “Easton, we’ve got visual.” One of my team members came over showing me a camera.
Maxon had a camera attached to the top of his vest and we could see everywhere he went. He went from one bedroom to another until he entered a basement showing us a wall lined up with boxes upon boxes of explosives. “He’s got’em. Move in.” I dropped my hand and our team made our way slowly into the house.
My boots banged on the stairs, and I was the last one to come down into the basement. “Easton! There’s foot traffic over here.”
“You think someone else has already came down here?” I asked my friend Antler.
Antler shakes his head no, brushing his fingers on the fresh footsteps hearing some movement behind some of the boxes. “Look at these markings. These are fresh just like our boots will be which means- “
“Someone else is down here.” I finished his train of thought.
I heard a women’s voice make a noise before a few of us draw out our firearms and aimed them in the direction. “Ah!”
“Come out with your hands up!” I called out while Maxon bared his teeth seeing a figure come around the corner.
The figure was a dark-skinned man all covered in different types of robed fabric. “You have no right to be down here. You are trust passing.” He held a woman against his chest with a gun to her head.
“Sir these explosives were stolen from a nearby US army base. They do not belong to you.” Antler explained to the man.
The guy pointed the gun at us, waving it around where I was nervous that it could go off at anytime. “You are the trust passers here. God will make you pay for what you did to my kids.”
“Ma’am, can you tell us what happened to your kids?” I asked her.
She winced beginning to cry before her husband shoved her onto the ground. “A bomb went off – destroyed our house – uh!”
“I will not let you take her from me. We shall be reunited with them in heaven.” The guy drew something out from behind his back, holding up a switch with a big red button and then I noticed the timer on the nearest explosion box.
Maxon started barking his head off bolting up the stairs when I hollered to my team. “Weapons hot. I repeat weapons hot!” I ran as fast as I could letting the rest of my team go up first hearing the ticking getting louder behind me.
I managed to get out of the door watching Maxon leap up into the low flying helicopter that had the rest of my team inside. “Mallory!” Antler called my name holding out a hand for me. I screamed barely grabbing his hand by the time the building blew up.
“No! I - I’m sorry.” I thrashed in the blankets of my bed throwing my arms and legs about. My chest was tightening, and I shot awake when I felt a hand touch my shoulder.
“Mallory – woah- “I heard someone say before I twisted the person’s wrist the opposite way where they winced in pain.
I drew my other hand into a fist trying to figure out who the intruder was and how he got inside my apartment. “Who the hell are you, intruder!”
“It’s me, Mal. Here look.” The guy used his other hand turning on the lamp that sat on my nightstand bringing light into my dark bedroom. I blinked my eyes adjusting to the light finally seeing who it actually was.
“Will.”
He nodded feeling my fingers loosen their grasp on his wrist. “Yeah, it’s me. You’re okay.”
“I’m sorry. I was just sleeping and then – I hurt you.” I reached for his wrist again tracing my thumb over the nails scars that I had dug into his skin.
He moved his wrist from my hand and instead intertwined my hand with his own. “You don’t have to apologize, Mal. Trust me when I say I have the chance of getting hurt much worse at the ED than I do with your nails digging into me.”
“I’m aware. I just feel bad about it.” I replied feeling the bed confuter shift when Maxon leaped up onto the bed and laid down on the other side of me. Will and I were very close, so I never wanted to hurt him in any way and he didn’t want to do anything to upset me.
Will left the bedroom and I heard him flip a switch on in the kitchen. Maxon laid his head in my lap and I slowly ran my fingers through his fur. I also could hear the microwave go on and off and it was a few minutes later he came back with a cup in his hand that he held out for me. “From what I’ve read it says that hot chocolate or coffee helps calm some people down and help your bawl movement too.”
“Will, I appreciate the concern. But I will be perfectly fine without that.” I shake my head no. He meant well but I could see his face shift into full on doctor mode like the drop of a hat. So, I doubt he’d let me decline his help now.
Will sits down at the edge of the bed seeing me pull my knees up close to my chest. “Mallory, this will help I promise. And I’m not leaving until you drink it.” He held out the warm mug again where I took it with a heavy sigh.
I sent him a glare raising the cup to my mouth sipping the liquid. The warm liquid went down my throat and I felt a warm feeling build in my stomach. My shoulders dropped in relief when I laid my back against the pillows behind me. “You’re a pretty good doctor to me, Halstead.”
“Thanks.” He smiled back at me. Silence fell between the three of us in the room, but it wasn’t an uncomfortable silence. His gaze scanned over my face, and he held his gaze with mine pausing before he said another word. “Can I ask what the nightmare was about exactly?”
“Um.” I trailed off tapping my fingers on the red coffee cup.
He drew his question back till I shake my head no. “If it’s too emotional I understand if you don’t want to talk about it.”
“I can talk about it. It’s just – it happened on my first mission out.” I sucked in a breath closing my eyes thinking back on the day it happened. “We were supposed to be retrieving some explosives that were stolen from one of our old bases nearby. It was out in the dessert of Afghanistan. We got information from an informant that they believed the explosives were held up in a hut out in the dunes.”
Will nodded in response. “So, you and Maxon were assigned to locate the explosives for your unit.”
“Yes, and we successfully did find them. Except we didn’t expect that the guy who stole them would be there.” I blinked through some tears sitting the coffee cup down on the nightstand table. “When we found the guy inside the basement, he came around the corner and – he was a little shit for using his wife as a shield. They had lost their kids because another unit before us so they hated us coming in.”
Will touches my knee seeing that my chest was heaving up and down with some tears falling down my face. “You don’t have to tell me anymore if you don’t want to.”
“I’m alright, Will. Um – he didn’t care about her safety, so he threw her on the ground like dirt and pulled out a dedtinator. He pressed it without a second thought and we barely made it out alive.” Maxon made a whimpering noise when I wiped away tears. “Every time I – I close my eyes I see her face. I think how horrible of a life that was for her. And – I couldn’t do anything to stop him.”
Will scooted forward on the bed motioning for Maxon to switch to the other side of the bed. “Woah, woah, hey now. I’m right here.” He wrapped his arms around my shaking body seeing me getting more emotional about the nightmare.
“She’s dead because of me. She’s – I - she’s gone.” I began crying into the fabric of his shirt, clutching my fingers into the fabric.
He rested his chin on top of my head holding me as close to his embrace as possible. “You did everything you could. You hear me, Mallory. You did what you could.” I felt one of his hands raise up and gently ran through my hair attempting to calm me down.
“Will, how did you get into my apartment?” The thought popped into my head once I had stopped sobbing so much.
I lifted my head up slightly from his chest and he kept playing with my hair. “You gave me a key remember.” He chuckled lightly at me.
“Oh right – my bad.” I laid my head back down in his chest and he squeezed me against his warm embrace. We laid in the bed and Maxon laid down at our feet watching over me before I fell back to sleep. “Thank you for being here.”
Will kissed my hair watching me fall asleep before he fell asleep himself. “You’re welcome, Mal.”

Will was heading out to his car swaying his car keys in his hand until someone flashed their headlights in his direction where he raised his hand so he wasn’t blinded by the lights.  He finally noticed it was his brother Jay sitting in the driver's seat.  “Come here!”
“Jay, what's up?” He asked his brother.
Jay snapped back not saying another word till the passenger door was closed.  “Get in the car.  What do you know about Ray Burke?”
“He does some real estate, owns a bar and a construction company-“
Jay cut his older brother off.  “And a reception hall.  You went to see him.”
“He wasn’t feeling well so I made a house call.  How do you know?” Will sent him a confused look.
Jay reached inside his jacket pocket showing him a small recording device before hitting the play button and playing a conversation between his brother and Ray.  “Hey, Ray.  I just wanted to let you know that your blood work looks good.  But I do recommend you follow up with a cardiologist.”
“I’m not going to a cardiologist.  I want you, Will.  You know, I’m giving you that hall for two grand.  That’s practically for free.”
Will shakes his head at his brother.  “Yeah, wh - are you listening to my calls?”
“Rays.” Jay replied.
Will raised a brow.  “Rays?”
“PD and the FBI have been investigating him for, like, two years, and look who waltzes in…my brother.”
Will questioned still not following why he was involved.  “Why are you investigating him?”
“Cause he’s a gangster.” Jay rolled his eyes.
Will raised up a hand not believing what he was hearing from his sibling.  “What, he pays off a building inspector every once in a while?”
“Try money laundering, fraud, embezzlement.  Now you’re involved with him.” Jay throws his hands up in the air.
Will brought a hand up to his forehead, sighing heavily.  “Oh, I’m not involved with him.  Hey I’m using his hall.  It’s not a big deal.”
“Yes, it is.  So whatever you’re doing, stop.” Jay sternly looked at his brother needing him to understand how serious this situation could get if remained involved.
Will’s phone vibrated in his pocket where he took it out seeing it was an unknown area code phone number.   He pressed the cell phone to his ear to figure out who was dialing him.  “Is this William Halstead?”
“Yeah, this is him.”
The caller was a male voice that responded back to him.  “This is Lieutenant Griffin.  Ms.  Easton has you listed as her emergency contact.”
“Is everything okay with her?  Is she injured?” Will asked in a very nervous tone in his voice.
Lieutenant Griffin began explaining the situation to the civilian doctor.  “She was brought back to the medical tent after she passed out from an explosion.  She has regained consciousness but we are formally discharging her until further notice.”
“Why?” He glanced at his brother who was listening to their conversation.
The Lieutenant avoided the question.  “I can’t disclose that information.  You’ll just have to ask her when you see her tomorrow morning when she’s returned home.”
“She’s coming home tomorrow?” Will still couldn’t comprehend the fact that his fiancé would be coming home sooner than they both anticipated.
The higher officer responded before hanging up the phone.  “Yes, Mr.  Halstead.  She will arrive on a helicopter at the Chicago International Airport.  Have a good night.”
“Hey, look at me Will.” Jay grabbed his brother’s shoulder once he had put his phone in his pocket.  “You need to stop dealing with Burke, especially if Mallory is coming home.  You don’t want this guy coming after her if you don’t hold up your end of the deal you have with him.”
Will shook his head no pushing open the car door, shutting it and heading over to his car leaving the hospital parking lot.  “I’m helping him out to let her have the perfect wedding.  I’m not gonna stop helping Burke.”
Mallory’s pov
Taking a nap in the seat of the helicopter I had been getting more tired than I used to and now I knew why.   I didn’t want to tell Will the reason through the phone or in a letter that would take months before it even made it into his hands.
“We’re about to touch down, Easton!” The driver of the helicopter got my attention when he called over his shoulder causing me to wake up and he woke Maxon up who was asleep on the metal ground too.
Leaning up in my seat I unclipped my seatbelt, reaching over and shrugging my backpack on.  Picking up my duffle bag I glanced out the door when we lowered the chopper down onto the landing platform of the airport.  The ladder dropped down where I slowly walked down the steps with a huge smile spreading across my face when I saw the man who was my fiancée.
“Mallory!” Will called my name running across the rooftop until my body collided with his.  He wrapped his arms around my waist lifting my feet off the ground, twirling me around in circles.  “Ohhh I’ve missed you so much.”
Maxon barked at us once I was back on my feet and placed one of my hands on the side of my fiancés face.  “I missed you so bad too.  And there’s something I gotta tell you -“
“Awe don’t worry, Maxon.  I missed you too.” Will heard my dog bark again meaning he wanted some attention so he bent down on a knee running a hand through his fur, receiving a happy tail wag.
Brushing hair that the wind blew in front of my face I cleared my throat gaining his attention again.  “Will, can we head home now.  I’m kinda tired and there’s something I need to tell you.” He nodded in agreement where we grabbed our stuff driving back to our apartment.
Once we had gotten everything unpacked and Maxon was laid down on the wooden floor taking a long awaited nap.  Slipping a sweatshirt over my head I plopped down on the couch simply wearing leggings watching Will warm up some leftover chicken and rice we had bought on the drive home.  He hands me my bowl sitting down beside me, focusing his gaze on me.  “So you had something you wanted to tell me.  What's going on, Mal?”
“It's not exactly something we've talked about so I totally understand if you're not ready.  I mean we're not even married yet.  So the idea of me being pregnant with your child is like crazy-”
Will cut me off causing me to drop my hands from being up in the air not realizing I had just blurted it out like I did.  “You’re pregnant!”
“Y-yeah I am.” I chuckled lightly, taken back by the fact that he seemed so overjoyed about this.  “Wait so you’re okay with this.”
Will quickly scooted across the couch capturing my lips with his own.  I hesitated for a moment before I began kissing him back, wrapping my arms around his neck. I deepened the kiss until he broke it by putting his forehead against mine.  “I’m thrilled, Mallory.  I - I didn’t want to pressure you into anything too soon.  But I want all of it Marriage, kids, a family with you.”
“I want all that with you too, Will.  And now we can have that cause I’m back home.” I nodded with a cheeky grin on my face.
My fiancé leaned forward kissing my forehead where I nuzzled my head underneath his chin.  “We’re gonna be a family, all four of us.” Laying my head against his chest he wrapped his arms around my waist while Maxon jumped up on the couch and laid at my feet.
