Rewatching s2p2 yet again and man . The way Riyu sounds when he first lands in front of the matriarch. He sounds so desperate and anguished. Like no no no no no this can’t be happening not to you PLEASE not to you

wanted to very quickly make up an interesting & engaging culture for the lil kobold guys so that it hurts more when they all die. here's my ramble about that.

they are not reptiles but like many reptiles they develop into male or female based on ambient temperature during embryonic development, but they also evolved into endothermic livebearers. so with the parent at regular body temp it's a fifty-fifty sex-at-birth split, but in conditions of colder-than-average daughters are produced, and hotter-than-average gives you sons. other sex traits are temperature linked so it can also be possible to trans your sex if you go through a temperature shock in either direction (hypo/hyperthermia) but that's pretty rare because you'd be more likely to die. other traits are temperature-linked including skintone saturation, hair coverage, etc and can change over time throughout an individual's life.

all of these are evolutionary traits to allow them to survive seasons without a dragon in the cave providing warmth; the lairs are usually high up in cold mountainous regions. a dragon's lair then has zonations of temperature from hottest (dragon) to coldest and kobolds are able to exploit the widest range possible. when there is no dragon, there's almost no warmth (as campfires and the like are lethal in tunnel systems), and in extreme circumstances colonies can become all-female and propagate by parthenogenisis until a dragon settles the lair again and provides warmth. naturally their little colonies are matriarchal, and the matriarch has to commune with the dragon in an area that is extremely hot (because of the dragon). this causes her to only bear sons. it means that there also has to be a mother of matriarchs whose job it is to produce a matriarch, which she does by staying in the cold parts of the cave, to give birth to daughters. the daughters can be next in line for matriarch if they can survive the dragon (i.e.. if it chooses not to kill em) and thereafter have to stay in the hot zone.

anyway this results in a kind of alternation of generations and two complimentary ruling bloodlines who, while related, can never meet past birth - if a matriarch has a daughter it's an indication that she was not as close with the dragon as her duties demand (she is supposed to interpret the dragon's moods and provide predictions of future prosperity based on them). and if a mother of matriarchs has a son it means she was also not being dutiful enough (but i mean. ice baths all day everyday aren't fun either so this scenario is more common than the reverse). once a mother of matriarchs has a son then she's out of a job due to old superstitions that sons, being smaller at birth and easier to produce, will permanently taint a uterus by showing it the easy way out, and thereafter it will always pick that route. that's only superstition tho. the matriarch & mother of matriarchs both have a group of consort malewives. these usually have a mix of cold and hot phase traits and tend to bounce between temperature zones so they don't become too inclined in any direction.

the colony does not have only two reproductive members ofc, these are only ruling bloodlines. most individuals are not born from a matriarch or mother of matriarchs, and when the lair is occupied by a dragon there should be an even bimodal distribution of sex traits. a child is named based on imagery from both parents' dreams during the baby's first sleep (there is no day or night. baby is left out unattended by the dragon while it sleeps and the dragon 'decides' if it's worthy to live or not. dragon doesn't give a fuck and is barely aware of all this btw). if it survives it gets two names, one from each parent. then later in life those two names are used by the matriarch (if upperclass/Important) or the division leader (if lowerclass; hunters, scavengers, etc) to pair up one individual with another who has a complimentary name. the four names should go well together and paint a nice word-picture. the two individuals then become partners in a kind of culturally-enshrined buddy system and do their tasks together. it's very dangerous in the warrens and tunnels after all and it's best to go in pairs.

for example holly's full name is Holly Burn (due to being the very unlucky son of a mother of matriarchs, who had to retire; he 'burned' her) and his partner's name is Red Leaf. the names when spoken together make a little four-word poem which is optimally good in their culture

so that's what i got since last night but i have more Ideas. anyway all that's going on including some intense interpersonal drama between himself and red leaf when the knights come

What are the differences between Shihou and Wukong?

Shihou is... calmer. But only barely.

Because he's had his twin brother acting as the "fun one" in his place, Shihou doesn't feel forced to be the life of the party as he would be as Sun Wukong.

Shihou still goes to Subodhi/Subhuti to study and understand what he and Luzhen may be. Maybe the twins even partake in twin-swapping to get a break from their respective responsibilities.

Subodhi, knows who it is: "Sun Wukong - do you the kanji homework I gave you yesterday?" Luzhen, disguised as his brother: "UH... yeah! Totally! It's uh... probably in my room." Subodhi: (*suspicious hum*) Luzhen: (*visibly sweating*) Subodhi: "Try to keep better care of your papers in future Sun. As punishment, your senior acolytes will oversee your kanji practice for the afternoon." Luzhen: "Oh! Ok, thanks Subod- I mean Master!" Subodhi, tired sigh: "Hopefully the other one gets back soon. Teaching two monkeys at once is making me age again." (*Meanwhile on Flower Fruit Mountain*) Shihou: "Why is there a music stage in the throne room?" Marshal Ma: "Your brother has discovered a talent for what he calls Rock Music."

Demon King of Havoc barely gets his foot in the door cus once he tries to commit a full assault on Flower Fruit Mountain - both brothers are flying at him with all the Ruyi Jingu Bang.

(Luzhen was the one who bullied the dragons into getting his big bro some decent weapons and armour.)

With room to breathe; Shihou doesn't need to make hasty decisions or flaunt himself in front of other demons. His brother is there to support him along the way, even if their similarities get them into trouble in Heaven.

In the Stone Matriarch verse; Shihou is very much a nerdy crown prince, compared to his more light-hearted twin. But he still gets into trouble out of boredom or because of his strong sense of justice - hence mucking out the stables for 500 years as punishment for an ill-planned protest/banquet ruining.

In the Twin Suns au; Wukong is far more cautious and less cheeky, wanting to ensure that his successor understands what is going on and how important this means to him to take up the Staff. He def tries the diplomatic route with the Bull family before letting MK go hero on them. That is of course unless Luzhen appears mid-fight riding a cloud like a surfboard, asking why DBK and PIF are acting so uncool?

I've joked that Luzhen and Shihou's dynamic is like Cuphead and Mugman - and that comparison still fits.

Group names for Dragons

A group of Lightning Dragons = a thunder

A group of Ice Dragons = a blizzard

A group of Fire Dragons = an eruption

A group of Earth Dragons = a crash

In regards to ones like the Mountain Dragons, e.g, Riyu, Vigor, Fir, and Lupine(Mountain Matriarch), a flock works.. granted a herd of Dragons can too I guess?

So that could apply to Firstbournes flock too, though it depends on who you ask. Before Iron Baron's death it'd probably be smth like, Firstbourne's tyranny and then after jts Firstbourne's flock.

Night Fury Lore

Thought I'd post my headcanons for HTTYD's Night Furies since we never got proper lore about them. This will probably be updated as time goes on and any OCs I post will adhere to these headcanons. Let me know what y'all think!

Sexual Dimorphism

Male Night Furies are made for hunting. They tend to be lean and swift with large wings that allow them to fly for extended periods of time without tiring. 

Female Night Furies are made to protect their nests and offspring with their bulkier builds, and are quite vicious when threatened. They tend to be more difficult to train than male Furies as they’re often very distrustful of humans. 

Stages of Maturity

Egg - 0 to 6 months Tiny Tooth - 6 months to 4 years Short Wing - 4 to 10 years Broad Wing - 10 to 80 years Titan Wing - 80 to 100 years

Aging

Night Furies reach full adulthood at 15 years of age with females maturing slightly faster than males. 

As they age, male Furies will have more nubs along their jawline than female Furies. Males will have a maximum of 5, while females will have 3. 

Spines lengthen, sharpen, and harden with age. 

Reproduction

Night Furies mate for life. 

Females will lay a clutch of 1-3 eggs at a time, which is why Night Furies tend to be rarer than other dragons. 

Population

Excessive hunting by humans has led to the near extinction of Night Furies. The only stable population known to exist is located on the island of Nóttsheim. 

Habitat

Night Furies inhabit high mountain caves that open directly to the sky for easy takeoff. Such caves also keep them safe from hunters and other dragons.

Behavior

Night Furies are nocturnal so they hunt at night and sleep during the day. 

Similar to birds, newly hatched Furies will imprint on the first thing they see, which is usually their parents.

Night Furies are the most secretive of the dragon species. They have learned to hide away from humanity to protect themselves, finding refuge on islands like Nóttsheim where they can raise their young in peace and grow old without fear of hunters. 

Night Fury flocks function similarly to wolf packs with the eldest mated pair acting as the leaders. Many flocks will also have a titan wing matriarch who ranks above the mated pair. She is greatly respected by the rest of the flock for her age and wisdom. 

Night Furies can heat their spines up to the point that they glow. This ability is used to communicate with others of their species within pitch-black environments, warm their eggs and hatchlings, and for threat and dominance displays. 

Night Furies are sworn enemies of Whispering Deaths and Skrills. The exact reasons for this rivalry are unknown but it’s believed to largely be due to territory disputes. The species have also been known to destroy each other’s eggs and nests.

I Am Princess X by Cherie Priest

The more May explores the webcomic, the more she sees disturbing similarities between Libby's story and Princess X online. And that means that only one person could have started this phenomenon---her best friend, Libby, who lives.

Tinkerbelle by Robert Manry

This book tells how a dream became a deed: how a middle aged, married and presumably sober copy editor of the Plain Dealer, of Cleveland, Ohio, happened to get the idea of sailing across the Atlantic Ocean in a small boat, how he acquired the boat, and how he executed the voyage that made his idea a reality. It is the story of the 13 1/2 foot sloop Tinkerbelle, believed to be the smallest boat ever to cross the Atlantic nonstop.

The author, having undertaken to explain why he made the voyage, describes his adventures during the 78 days it lasted: being awakened by a submarine, being knocked overboard by big waves, meeting three Russian trawlers, suffering weird hallucinations, repairing a broken rudder in mid-ocean, receiving a feast from a Belgian ship captain, trying to get dry, being interviewed by a Cleveland TV newsman 250 miles from journey’s end, and receiving a welcome from an armada of small boats at his destination, Falmouth, England.

Quite apart from the thrill of the exploits it reports, Robert Manry’s story has the happy effect of persuading the reader that he too could sail a small boat single-handed across the Atlantic… if only he could find the time.

The Cantaloupe Thief by Deb Richardson-Moore

It's ten years since wealthy matriarch Alberta Resnick was found stabbed to death in Georgia. Local reporter Branigan Powers sets out to investigate the city's only unsolved murder.

Branigan knows that the homeless often have information, but are rarely asked. She gets in touch with Liam, a pastor who runs a shelter. As they start to ask questions, secrets begin to surface. Then homeless people start dying.

Clearly the killer won't stop until all tracks are covered. But what the killer doesn't know is that someone is watching, someone who is used to being ignored and unseen…

Okay, so about a third of you who voted requested some more Thunderdragons. I don't have much, and I need to write more, but here is the intro to the fic about Gordon's dragon.

This is a standalone fic that happens a few years before Óen. There are no HTTYD characters in this one. I needed to write it to sort out their history so I could write Óen. This AU/Crossover is hard work :D

Virgil O’Treasaigh hurried between the tents careful not to trip on the pitch lines, but moving as fast as possible nonetheless.

The Flaithri’s tent was not far, the stamp of the Thunderbird was lit up by the torches clearly in the night, but it felt like leagues into the distance.

Perhaps because the title of Flaithri had shifted so recently and so painfully. Because behind that stamp he would no longer find his father, but instead his eldest brother.

And he feared his mood.

His flight leathers rubbed in places sore from travel and he let out a breath.

Casey had placed guards at the tent, the soldiers eyes sharp as he passed between them without question, striding through the tightly woven flax as it was whipped up by the wind off the black ocean to the west.

“Flaithri, I must speak with you.”

His brother was pacing, of a sort, the injury to his leg forcing a limp that had Virgil biting back protest. Considering the slice to his thigh, it was a sign of his agitation that he could pace at all.

Kyrano stood to one side, his eagle eyes watching everything. His daughter,  Tan, may as well have been a statue in his honour, her stance so mirrored her father’s.

“Scott!”

His brother stopped. His stance lopsided as he turned to face Virgil. “News?”

Virgil swallowed. “Mathair Chriona fears he will not see the light of morning.”

He watched his brother absorb the information. Ever the king he was born to be, there were no tears, only hurt in the depths of his eyes. “Nothing can be done?”

“We have tried everything. He has lost too much and his heart is beginning to falter.” Virgil’s voice cracked on the last word and his head dipped, his own calm strained beyond exhaustion and grief.

A hand landed on his shoulder, fingers tightening almost enough to cause pain. “John has spoken to Cóic.”

Virgil’s head shot up. “No!”

“Virgil, I will lose no more family today.”

And the blue of his brother’s eyes was terrible. Because today they had seen their father taken from them, the fire of Gaat’s beast scorching him from the earth.

The attack had been sudden and unexpected. Cóic had been unable to give warning, still too young to have the reach of an adult matriarch.

They had thought they were safe, hidden in the mountains in the land of the Picts, far from their homeland and the decimation the Scourge had wrought. They thought that Gaat could not find them.

His attack had targeted John and Cóic as it always did. Cóic was what he wanted, of course. The power of the Matriarch and the offence of John receiving the gift and not him had maddened the man.

But John had family and their father had intervened to protect and given his life. It was Gordon, seamaster at arms, who had leapt up onto the worm, stabbed the man, and ended the fight.

But despite his victory, Gaat’s beast had shaken him off and Gordon had fallen. If that was not enough, the cursed worm had then raked Virgil’s little brother with fire.

Gaat had been desperate and had withdrawn to lick his wounds.

But Gordon, dear Gordon…

A single tear tracked down Virgil’s cheek.

“Cóic will save him.”

“She can’t. We don’t know what creatures might be willing. What is the price?!”

But there was blue fire in those eyes. “His life.”

You know there has been something that has stuck out to me since I’ve watched the new Ninjago season, and it’s this line from Wyldfyre:

A nursing pouch? What do you mean a nursing pouch? What does this mean for other dragons? Im going to go full on analysis mode on this, so get comfortable and enjoy my over analyzing of a Lego show.

To start off let’s talk about those wonderful pouches, creatures that have nursing pouches are defined as marsupials. Mammals that have short gestation periods and small birth size, so they end up having pouches or skin folds to protect offspring.

All of this means that the Matriarch and probably the other dragons of her kind are indeed mammals, which makes sense due to them being able to stay unaffected by the cold temperatures of the mountains. Normal reptiles would have suffered in the climate. And I may be over analyzing right now but we atleast have some more context for FSM, which I will get to in a minute.

We have seen dragon eggs before so we know they are not all mammals, and if you are wondering where it was in a YouTube short taking place between DR season 1 and 2. Where it was revealed to be ice dragon eggs.

Now begs the question, which dragons are mammals and which ones are reptiles? Truth be told, I have no clue. I’m sure we as a fandom can narrow it down, but for now I just want to focus on one particular dragon. Now it is unconfirmed which dragon got together with the Oni, or even what gender the dragon was, but I am more than sure that whichever dragon it was it came from the mammal side of it. And while this doesn’t clear up much about the story behind the FSM, at least he didn’t hatch from an egg.

Worldbuilding In 5

Thank you for the tag. @anyablackwood!!! I'm a huge fan of worldbuilding, so this is going to be so fun! I'll go with my WIP Of Starlight and Beasts for this one!

Kingdom Of Tirawen

Tirawen is one of, if not the, most important cities in the realm. Capital of a kingdom (of the same name) Tirawen is nestled atop the eastern side of a vast mountain range, at the heart of the realm. It was once a "sibling kingdom" to its neighboring nation of Idraven before Idraven fell to the clutches of a harrowing curse that practically wiped it from history's records. Tirawen is ruled over by an ancient royal family, a dynasty said to have brought about an era of peace and prosperity to the once chaotic realm. The kingdom also has a darker side - beset by monstrous, twisted beasts from beyond the mountains, all throughout the year, but especially so during the long winter months of the kingdom, Tirawen strongly depends on its magical borders, which have provided effective protection from the beasts for centuries. However, in the beginning of the book, this magic begins to wane and falter, presenting a dire future that just may put at risk the existence and survival of this beautiful marble city, if not prevented on time.

The Frosts

The Frosts are a large expanse of land far beyond the territories of kingdoms like Tirawen, Monbern, or Orloch. A vast, frozen, and desertic tundra, the Frosts' land is untamable to outsiders who do not understand the power of its enchanted winter. This land is also the home of the first True Dragons and giant snakes, which seem to have been born of the raw magic present in the snowstorms and frozen oceans. The Frosts have their own kingdoms and divisions of land, independent from their neighbors on the other side of the continent - such as Tirawen, and the other cities - though the two lands have strong diplomatic bonds and trade. They're ruled over by five, ancient, matriarchal clans, who were the first humans to master both the art of survival and magic - and they have learned to both tame and leave peacefully with the giant draconic creatures surrounding them. This land is much, much more ancient than Tirawen and any of the kingdoms that grew around it.

Yeah I draw this guy a lot but I thought it was time i put together my take on him in a more Coherent way. Lots of design notes/lore/hc stuff under the cut.

-> Usually dragons Riyu’s age are more lanky, but between ninja training and his unconventional diet (he eats So much human(oid) food lol. Probably a v different meat-to-everything-else ratio than a typical mtn dragon has), he has put on a lot of muscle and fat. He’s built like the dragon equivalent of a pro body builder it’s so funny i love him

-> Mtn dragons have relatively long wings as far as dragons go. Their wingtips naturally are deeply notched as well. These adaptations are good for passive soaring without sacrificing much maneuverability; two things that are important for living, traveling, and hunting in their home mountain ranges.

-> My idea for a scarification tradition in mtn dragon communities 🎉 patterns associated with clan or group carved/burned into the keratin of tail clubs:

This is most done by older or higher ranking members of a clan or family, to teen dragons as a coming of age thing. It is also done at any age to show allegiance to groups/causes/etc not directly affiliated with birth clan/family. It is done with sharp tools heated over a fire, or simply with a claw charged with the carver’s own powers/energy in order to the burn patterns.

Keratin is the same material that makes up fingernails, hooves, and the sheaths on horns of many irl animals. I imagine the keratin layer on mtn dragons’ tail clubs is very thick. So, done correctly, the process isn’t painful (mildly painful at worst) but can be uncomfortable. Since the layer continues to grow and repair itself throughout a mtn dragon’s life, the ritual needs to be repeated occasionally over the years lest the patterns fade/fill with time. Riyu had his club engraved for the first time during the time skip between drs1-2.

Mtn dragons will also have symbols or patterns added to their tail clubs throughout their lives that represent affiliations to causes, other groups, accomplishments, their interests, etc. Riyu has a ninjargon “R” because having something in a ninjagan human script represents his association with, and status as, a ninja. Also I based his clan markings off one of the shapes on his Matriarch’s crown.

-> Accessories time 🎉🎉🎉:

Carry bag: he doesn’t have pockets… he needs pockets… give him pockets. And bags (there is a bag on each shoulder). He’s got a couple of these but the green one is his favorite.

Glove-shoes: Riyu walks on his hands, but also uses them as.. well. Hands. Wouldn’t want to handle things like food (or objects which he otherwise wouldn’t want to dirty) with the same hands that are all over the ground all the time. This way, his glove-shoes can get dirty while his hands stay clean inside. He can just take them off when it’s time to eat or handle anything that doesn’t need to get dirty. He also just likes how they look; he’s got a few pairs. Stylish guy.

A-ma Longan, or Grandma Dragon-Eye

soooo i'm doing my own spin on giving Wukong a mama, so meet miss Dragon-Eye herself <3 Longan is a langur monkey who appeared in Huaguo one day centuries back, and found a spot for herself in one of the mountain's monkey troops. Given her considerable age and that she's been a mentor and a maternal figure to so many, she's earned a position of respect among the other langurs. François langurs are matriarchal and rear their children communally among the females, and males leave the troop before they are mature, so I imagine that someone needs to kick ass when the troop is in danger, and given the amount of demons we have around, that's gonna be her. Longan once attempted cultivation but ultimately gave up before reaching Huaguo, but what she's learned watching priests and monks doesn't go to waste. She's managed to keep peace among the monkeys as well as with most demons, and she does her best to keep all her loved ones healthy and safe. Sometimes that includes pacifying spirits and local gods, but that's just part of the job. She has a sort of will-they-won't-they Situationship with the mountain's tutelary deity (dijizhu) who I'll get to eventually. They work well together, having grown their own kind of affectionate sniping and ribbing over the centuries, and he can't complain finally receiving offerings and not being trampled by this or that demon as was the case before Longan came. i'm gonna come up with, way more ocs for this au of mine lmao including of course, giving Wukong a monkey big bro :3c

Working out the details of the different dragon species (races?) for my rewrite, still a lot to work out + I need to actually draw and design them (that's a problem for future me to figure out) but here's some details I've got so far.

General

All dragons are significantly smaller than in canon. From smallest to largest:

Rainwings. 2.5-3ft at the shoulder

Seawings, 2.7-3.5ft at the shoulder

Sandwings, 4-5ft at the shoulder

Nightwings, 4.5-.5.3 at the shoulder

Icewings, 4.5-5.5 at the shoulder

Skywings, 5-6ft at the shoulder

Mudwings, 5.7-6.5 at the shoulder

Females are generally larger than the males - still a matriarchal society because of this.

World is in roughly the bronze age.

Pantalla and its dragons don't exist. The planet is still separated into 2 major continents, but there's a large island chain between them, and the 7 main races are spread across them.

All races have their own language, some more similar than others.

There is no 'universal' language.

All dragons are usually expected to be at least bilingual.

Several languages have similar structures/sounds, which makes communication easier (think Norwegian and Swedish).

Mixed-race dragons are common, and its very normal to see a wide variety in cities and towns.

Each race isn't super distinct and defined like I've detailed below, because of the mixed population, so while they are still distinct, it's not all 'blood-purity' like in canon.

HOWEVER the royalty/upper echelons of society do stick very close to their bases, and see that as a sign of holiness, for lack of a better word.

Skywing

Body and wings covered predominantly by feathers. Exact feather coverage depends on the individual but the lower legs, end of the tail, and wing tips usually feature scales. (imagine a birds wing but replace the primary feather with dragon wings basically)

Wing shape more similar to seagulls and other ocean birds. Built for endurance and long-distance flights over speed.

Feathers and scales usually a reddish-brown colour, with some greys and whites mixed in. (see: golden eagles, bald eagles, haasts eagles, philippine eagles, etc.)

Carnivorous, diet made up of mountain-going ungulates, small mammals, and some fish.

Large front teeth for catching prey. Cone-shaped serrated cheek teeth for tearing flesh.

Long horns, typically narrow and spiraling.

Seawing

Covered in dense feathers similar to penguins, though their wings lack feathers completely.

No gills

Their wings have evolved to be curved and stiff, which allows them to launch out of the water and glide, like flying fish, for up to 500m with good winds.

Can't fly 'normally' outside of this.

their tail is a bit stiffer and ends in a fluke for more powerful swimming.

They're excellent divers, holding their breath for up to an hour, and diving as deep as a kilometer.

Feathers come in shades of blue, grey, green, brown, as well as many having bright accent colours like yellow and red.

Piscivorous, eating mostly fish, as well as squids, octopi, and various crustaceans

Robust front teeth for catching prey and cracking open shells. Hooked and serrated cheek teeth for holding onto prey and moving it down the throat.

Lack horns completely. Instead many individuals have large frills on the cheeks and down the spine.

Sandwing

Minimal feather covering, usually only a 'cape' around their shoulders and down their back.

Usually pale creams and browns, as well as darker shades, with some greys and blacks. Usually fairly solid colours, with some striping/barring.

Wings are broad and long, taking advantage of air columns to soar for hours.

Tail is long and flexible, ending in a stinger filled with paralysing venom.

Omnivores, growing root vegetables and hunting for small mammals and birds, and using their venom to bring down larger prey.

Small conical teeth for chewing smaller prey. Larger canines.

Best sense of smell of all dragons; can track their prey from up to 30km away.

Short horns with some curvature.

Icewing

Second thickest coat of feathers after Seawing's. Similar layout to Skywing's but feathers extend further down legs and tail.

Feathers come in greys and browns, with prominent barring down the whole body.

Thick mane of feathers on neck can stand on end, creating the 'spiky' look.

Wings are a similar shape to sand, but larger. Build for passive soaring.

Omnivores, eating mostly fish, seals, and penguins, but also enjoying various fruits when the season allows.

Large, cone-shaped and serrated teeth for tearing flesh.

Long, sharp horns. Tend to curl back then up. Excellent for stabbing.

Nightwing

Again, similar feather layout to Skywing's, but a bit denser.

Feathers are usually dark greys and browns, as well as black. An individuals scales are typically darker than their feathers.

Have white speckling along their wings, on the feather and skin sections, which gives the illusion of stars.

Wings are a broad elliptical shape, have a velvety fuzz along the skin section, and serrations along the leading edge of the wing. These factors allow them silent flight.

Fully nocturnal, though they may venture out occasionally at sunrise and set.

Carnivores, eating deer, small mammals, birds, and reptiles.

Teeth are cone-shapes and serrated.

Mid-length horns. Tend to curl in a large circle behind the head.

Rainwing

Completely lack feathers, instead covered in colour-changing scales.

Wings are small and elliptical, can be used for slowing their fall, or for sudden bursts of speed (and double-jumping, basically) but are too small for sustained flight.

Large, cobra-like teeth deliver a deadly venom upon a bite. The neurotoxins in the venom causes dizziness, vertigo, and nausea, followed by neuromuscular paralysis, and eventually tissue necrosis. If left untreated, the victim may require amputation of the bitten area. The venom is usually fatal within 30 minutes.

Prehensile tails and short, curved claws, allows them to live an almost fully arboreal lifestyle.

Frugivorous, eating various fruits, vegetables, flowers, nuts, and seeds. Though they may also enjoy the occasional small reptile or insect for some extra protein.

Lack horns. Instead have large frills framing their cheeks.

Mudwing

Completely lack feathers, most of their body being covered in thick, keratinous scales.

Come in shades of brown, greenish-browns, grey, and yellowish-brown.

Large, elliptical wings. Slow in flight, they're primarily terrestrial.

They have the strongest bite-force of all dragons, averaging around 5000psi.

While not truly aquatic, they still rely heavily on water to keep cool in the intense heat of their native habitat. They're powerful swimmers and can hold their breath for up to 5 minutes.

Omnivorous, they'll eat almost anything, though they prefer larger mammals like pigs, as well as crocodiles. They grow a wide range of fruits and vegetables, as well as foraging for native plants.

They have short, powerful teeth able to crush through bone.

Mid-length, thick horns. Usually curled down around the jaw to different levels. Some may curve in different directions.

Claws are large and flat, ideal for digging.

Sennar, the Dragon (Deranged OC Rambling)

CONTENT WARNING: Heavy talk/reference/implication of rape, sexual abuse and subjects pertaining to gender identity and the like.

I'm back with more deranged character ramblings studies, this time with an original character for a sapphic smut short story I am, still, working on... part of a larger world I've sat on for the better part of a decade now (If folks would like a very lengthy lore dump on this world, comments/asks are always encouraging).

Meet Sennar, the Dragon.

Sennar is a female dragon of steel-grey scales that shimmer blue in the light. For her species, Sennar tends to be stand-offish and passive unless her temper is provoked or something of interest is presented to her (she enjoys stories and cultural behaviors & rituals that are foreign to her). Though identifying as female, Sennar is Rhaen (an Intersex gender identity) and suffers dysphoria due to how draconian culture treats and reviles her assignment.

Hailing from an undiscovered land far to the north-east of the continent of Aphrosia(where the short story takes place), across a seemingly endless ocean, Sennar flew for several days and nights before, in her exhaustion, crash-landed into a mountain range of Aphrosia known as Dracyn's Slumber. Not only did she suffer injuries from the landing (nearly destroying both her wings), she was also bearing relatively fresh claw and bite marks, having been attacked by another dragon.

In draconian society, males rule and females are nothing more than breeding stock to perpetuate the species (dragons were nearly hunted to extinction during a massive conflict they call The Fallen Eclipse, which led to their predecessors fleeing Aphrosia). Rhaen dragons are reviled by their own kin and few that make it to adulthood forever live a life of secrecy, else they be executed for bearing the 'curse' of the 'Betrayer God' Rh'ae (Goddess of Creation, Life, the Sun, Fire and Destruction and 'mother' to the dragons). Rhaen's, if not outright killed, are forced to go through torturous procedures to 'correct' their assignment.

Sennar was one of the few female Rhaen dragons that lived freely, as part of an exile clan. She had an unfortunate encounter with a young male dragon, that sought to add her to his harem. His claws gouged her flanks and teeth nearly snapped her neck as she fought back against his attempted rape. Upon discovering she was Rhaen, the male dragon left deep gouges over her groin in an attempt to castrate her. Sennar overpowered and killed the offending dragon despite the debilitation of her injuries.

Unfortunately, the clan's matriarch, an ancient dragon believed to have lived before The Fallen Eclipse occurred, feared retribution against Sennar now that her true nature was exposed and convinced her to fly across the 'Endless Sea' to find their ancestral home and live at peace.

Despite her injuries, Sennar made the flight and barely survived.

A human woman (Jorunn Fafindottir) discovered Sennar within the mountains and nursed her back to health, coaxing the dragon to follow her back to her homeland, Jormunheim, where the ravaging winter storms would hide the dragon while she finished recovering. There, Sennar learned some of the forgotten and omitted history of her kind and grew to understand the matriarch's fondness for mortal creatures such as Humans. To be among mortals that revered, not feared, her kind was quite a cultural shock... as well as coming to term with the fact that her position as a 'Rhaen' female was not hated or even registered as much more than a sexual curiosity.

Once the winter storms calmed and her injuries were healed, Sennar left to travel across Aphrosia, adopting the guise of a human. Though a shapeshifter, she could not maintain a total human disguise for longer than a day at a time. Most times, she adopted a 'half' form that most mistook for a Rh'xol, a species of mortals said to be the direct daughters of Rhae herself; partially draconian in physical appearance

Before the next Fivulvinter came to cut Jormunheim off from the rest of Aphrosia for the winter, Sennar returned to the village with a sizable 'offering' (basically a dowry) to claim Jorunn as her mate. The previous year, the dragon had observed how her own people were only interested in her for brief carnal affairs and Jorunn's companionship had deeply touched and attracted Sennar, coming to see the woman as an equal during their time spent together.

Sennar was prepare to be rejected but Jorunn happily accepted the dragon's proposal and they become bonded/married. Sennar guards and cherishes her wife quite fiercely, as well as the entire settlement.
