#Mashup of MCU and Comic Canon

Wanda is going to be in Spider-Man: Homeroom Heroes 2, which is presumably an au since Peter is in highschool. It’s interesting to me that she appears to be wearing the costume from Marvel Verses: SW (down to the kneepads), which seems to be based on the mcu (civil war?) costume

It’s an odd choice for the marvel verses book (since they usually seem to take existing art for those); afaik, the original image was for marketing; I saw it the first time on Amazon as a link to scarlet witch merch and remember noting that her skin was half a shade darker than the white characters on the same page, which felt like a hollow gesture. This new take looks better imo but it is weird that this look is kind of becoming an alternate costume for Wanda. Do you have any thoughts on this either just as a costume or as an extension of marvel’s treatment of Wanda’s race?

Just for clarity-- Spider-Man: Homeroom Heroes is a new series following a teenage Peter Parker that's billed for young readers. It's not set in canon, and I assume that the tone is going to be very simplified and tailored to, presumably, grade school kids. Marvel-Verse is a series of collected volumes that are meant to act as an introduction to various Marvel characters for people who are new to comics. The cover of the Scarlet Witch edition features an original illustration of Wanda wearing a non-canon costume, that I can only describe as derivative of the trenchcoat costumes Olsen wore prior to Wanda//Vision.

I've actually seen versions of this design before, usually on products like games or other comics for young readers. If I had to guess, I think the thought process is that consumers who only know Wanda from the movies wouldn't recognize her classic costume or any of her most recent contemporary looks, so she ends up wearing this half-assed M C U pastiche instead. Her skin tone varies-- this has been going on since before the Dauterman redesign-- but even in examples like these, where she looks like she's meant to be tan, she's pretty washed out. The lightened hair doesn't help.

I think it's silly-- if you're trying to get new consumers to read comics, they're going to have to get used to spandex eventually-- but it's not exactly offensive. Wanda's lucky, in that M C U synergy has never really impacted her appearance or characterization in actual comics, so this weird mashup doesn't actually reflect reality. It's weird to see what's meant to be Wanda, as a visible woman of color, wearing a version of the movie costume, but it doesn't bother me as much as, say, fanart of Olsen wearing the Dauterman costume, or whitewashed fanart of Marvel Rivals.

I guess my only real verdict is that the costume just doesn't look good, and I think that the artists, editors, and marketing people who opt for this are doing both the consumer and the character a disservice. But I'm here to write about comics and their adaptations-- I can't get too worked up about extant material. As long as this never leaks into canon, it's not going to be a big concern for me.

if you're still doing the character ask game: mcu loki - 2, 3, 7, 8? (i know that's a lot, but i feel like they go together. you can just pick one pair if you like)

2. Favorite canon thing about this character?

My love for Loki is because he is a schemer (I even love the pre-reincarnation evil old man comic book version). I just love sneaky, scheming characters that are disliked by those around them for either unfair or fair reasons. It's the trait I am drawn towards (see my love for SkekSil). I love how contradictory his traits are. His self-hatred and grandiosity. I love that he even loses when he wins. I also find him very projectable/relatable? Maybe because I also have difficulty maintaining relationships. I definitely think a part of me is so attached to the concept of Loki due to how Christianity demonized him, the most notable aspect in the MCU being Loki's horned helm that made my very Catholic mom scream at the fucking TV.

3. Least favorite canon thing about this character?

This is hard because I feel like the flaws add onto him. My least favorite thing is his tendency to resign to shitty conditions. On relationships and plans. This can be shown by his sabotage of relationships (e.g. Sif). And his sabotage of plans that might prove too risky (e.g. trying to betray Thor in Sakaar so he won't leave to fight Hela and potentially die). Loki's a very pessimistic character, I'd say. While I am glad in the series he didn't become a Time cop, he still shows strong signs of that pessimistic streak by going at fixing the problem on his own without really talking things out.

7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?

My favorite HC (by 100indecisions) is that he has mental scar tissue from the mind stone's influence that makes him difficult to enchant. I think I've claimed that I forgot it was a HC when S2 aired and people were wondering why he didn't just let Sylvie enchant him. I also like to see how people HC his magical abilities.

I love psychological analyses that don't denigrate mental illnesses. And I love analyses on motifs and symbolism, or interpretations of the character as metaphor for neurodivergence. I also love trauma HCs as the angsty bitch that I am.

Although I am a grimdark bitch, I enjoy GOTG + Asgard mashups where Loki didn't die in IW. He's a fun character to have interact with the GOTG, and there's the question of whether he'd know Gamora and Nebula.

And there's some cool TVA fics like pantiara's "Trapped in Time."

8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?

I dislike HCs where he's this gentle bookish prince that has NEVER touched a blade nor killed anything before Thor (2011). Did you all not see him display combat skills in pretty much everything he's been on?

I loathe the way most people talk about Loki. Either he deserves eternal suffering, was evil from birth, "pretended" to kill himself, and has evil personality disorder, or he's "too good" to have the personality disorder and it's actually evil Odin that has the personality disorder.

And my least favorite kind of Loki fic is Frostiron where it's revealed Loki is actually as nice as freaking Jesus. Loki should be messy and not some waifish victim, especially if he comes from Asgard, land of "We don't talk about our feelings". And lol, I just don't like Tony.

I guess I also think ship wars are pointless and obnoxious.

The only good thing about the future is Tony Stark's bodyguard, Rescue. She's beautiful in her red and gold armor, and Steve will never know who she is.

Author's note:

This is a big mashup of Avengers MCU, 616 and Ultimates canon. (All the things I like, none of the cancer or Hank Pym.) No knowledge of comics should be required to read this fic; I personally know just enough about comics canon to get into trouble.

This AU pulls a couple of plot points from 616, namely: Tony’s identity is hidden from everyone, and he’s secretly wearing the arc-reactor powered chest plate of the armor at all times to keep his heart going. Everyone is living in the New York mansion, but the Avengers lineup is approximately the same as in MCU, minus Bruce. Characterization is a healthy mix of MCU and Ultimates. (EDIT: in the wake of comments, I have to admit that Tony and Steve are closer to 100% Ultimates. FYI.)

For your end of year fic-writer ask prompt! Which of your fics was most different from what you usually write?

Ha, this is another question that I feel dumb answering because I only really wrote one fic this year.

That said, Freedom's Reach was different from my other fics in a couple of ways.

First, I used it as the opportunity to write a very different kind of Clint. The Clint Barton in Freedom's Reach, who I refer to as "Gosh!Clint Barton," is fresh out of the circus betrayal. Usually I write a little older AU Clint, or a more (mashup between Fraction/Aja comic clint and MCU Clint) canon SHIELD/Avengers/brainwashed-by-Loki Clint, so this was an opportunity to really explore a younger, less-jaded, more optimistic Clint Barton. Second, the fic really relied on miscommunication, which is typically a pet peeve of mine. I have trouble keeping my characters from just coming out and saying what's on their minds, so drawing out the arranged marriage angst for three months when they were both very well-suited to each other was definitely a challenge for me.

Finally, I think usually even when I'm deliberately writing a trope, I try to rein it in a little. For this fic, I was just determined to shove every self-indulgent trope I could think of in there. There's mail order husbands / arranged marriage, and mutual pining, and misunderstandings, and overhearing-exactly-the-wrong-words, and platonic-bed-sharing, and the 1890's equivalent of a race-to-the-airport scene. Just ALL the tropes, and I'm not even sorry. ;-)

Summary: Upon waking up in the future, Steve is given many things: an apartment, a job at SHIELD, and (most miraculously) Bucky, revived from the ice just like Steve himself.

But there's something off that he can't quite figure out. Steve's work at SHIELD seems counterproductive and strange. There's a political uprising that he thinks is connected, but no one will acknowledge it. There's an infamous assassin that Black Widow knows, but refuses to tell Steve about. And he can't tell if Bucky is behaving strangely, or if maybe, he never knew Bucky as well as he thought he did.

Or: the one where the Winter Soldier goes undercover as Bucky Barnes to keep Captain America under control.

ok so i’m gonna do a big mashup of comics and movies here simply because i can! so i’m absolutely in love with the moment in iron man 1 when tony says “i am iron man” because YES KING GO OFF!!!! i love tony stark and i just. i love him being an ass in front of the entire world LMAO. my memory is SO fuzzy rn because it’s late at night and generally just don’t have the best memory so i might not be remembering things 100% accurately skdfjsdkfjs.

i generally only read spidey and f4 comics, but i love the scene in f4 empyre when sue helps val and franklin gamble against some aliens kfjsdf i found that moment so FUNNY i love chaotic mom susan. 

i also will NEVER shut up about that one gwenmj page “because of her” because!! my RIGHTS!!!! hdkfjsdfks that gives me so much joy i reread it often just to feel something, anything. 

i always cackle at the scene in thor ragnarok when bruce jumps off the spaceship, thinking he’s gonna hulk out, but just flops on the ground. i just kdjflskdjfs that SCENE. that whole MOVIE! it’s what got me into marvel in the first place! i had No Interest in superheroes and then i saw thor ragnarok and was immediately in love! now i have been fully consumed by the Superhero Brainrot. i love it here.

Anon!!! You opened a whole bag of sour patch kids here. Settle in. I haven’t gotten a lot of feedback on this project. If I should go back and revamp to my new ao3 with edits. So, I’m not sure if has enough interest for a go head. But, it’s an old Loki/OC fic that’s near and dear to my heart. The first major fic I completed, clocking in at 800K words. Yeap. Longer than Les Mis. Longer than the LOTR series including the hobbit. It’s a beast. But, it’s my beast and I own everything I did in it.  🤣 See below and come shout at me more about this fic bc I adore it too much. Basically, it’s about a woman realizing she’s the Protagonist. With lots of smut & not all with Loki.

Basically, it’s structured a little like a cinematic universe with phases and “prompts/arcs” within the phases that end up building into a growing story. It starts eons before the first Thor movie! Loosely goes into the movies before veering off into his epic mashup of Marvel movies, including The Amazing Spider-man//X-Men//Fantastic Four, with a lot of comic canon events and twists into this monstrosity where I bash hopeful/dramatic themes into your face a million times.

Concretely, I wrote it from about  Nov '13-Oct '17 so well before the Infinity War mess. Posted it Dec ‘17-April ‘18. The only mcu movies I get into are Thor1/2, Avengers, & Winter Soldier. Needless to say a lot of characters appear and some from the mcu don’t even show up or are just mentioned in passing, I rly had to pick and choose with the storylines from the comics I sunk in. At the core, it’s still a Loki/OC if you can believe that lmao to be fair, his dumbass did kick a lot of the events off....

The OC, who I only ever call the Lady outside the fic, is actually unnamed. For all 800K words. She gets nicknames/terms of endearment/an Avengers tag, but it never felt right to name her. And it became a fun game of how her name was being said and who refused to use it//only use nicknames. She’s an Asgardian with Issues. Which is more common than you think. Flawed Gods. Theme.

For millions of years, Asgard is a place of these warrior gods pledged to protect the realms//the lands within Asgard itself and do not much else. I made Asgard the full realm it was supposed to be, not the tiny planet it got reduced to. Each realm is important to the balance of Yggdrasil. One falls, they all do. Being a god is an absolute commonplace and Asgard is wrapped up in old ways that Thor’s generation is trying to break from. Theme. We also get a different dynamic when they journey to earth and are actually treated like gods. Theme.

The Lady is an out of place budding warrior trying to find her footing in the world like everyone else. She’s from a poor village, has a not great home life, and struggling with newfound feelings right off the bat for one of her oldest friends. Prince Jerk Himself. She’s been a longtime companion of the Warriors Three/Sif/Thor/Loki and always felt like she’s behind and playing catch up with them. She’s got mental issues she has to hide bc gods aren’t allowed to be flawed. And we find out very quickly that they are. Theme. I play with a lot of fun coming of age tropes actually in Asgard’s setting lol

Her story is the focus, it’s her growth as a warrior and independent woman just trying to protect her friends. Loki, after years of asking him, agrees to teach her magic bc she expresses an talent/a passion that she hasn’t had for other means of fighting and it’s all downhill from their for them. Her quest for power starts out as a means to protect her friends and prove herself and turns into a full blown insatiable obsession to Save Everyone. Theme.

She and Loki struggle a lot, they’re imperfect people with make a lot of wrong choices. There are periods where their relationship is genuinely unhealthy/toxic with Loki’s fall to villainy and the Lady’s quest for knowledge and power. Lessons come with that and characters grow. They both attract some unsavory villains and struggle with the notion of what freedom really means. What it means to be god and human. What they’re willing to do to protect those they love. Also soooo much found family tropes lol bc I can’t resist. I ignore like....80% of what the MCU did, esp with Odin/Thor/Asgard. I just went all out and wrote a monster.   Anti-Villains, Ultimate Alliances, Heroes, and Redemption Arcs Galore.  

The Lady is...a special OC. The fic centers on her story, a lot of hellish things happen to her and she just keeps fighting through it all. It’s also a first person fic just due to not naming her lol She’s a plus size, mentally ill, WOC. And I’m not shy about this, her backstory and trauma was all accurately taken from my own like so their are some major triggers in early chapters of abuse, s*lf h*rm, past csa mentions, etc.

I hope I get more asks about this fic, I’d love to take on the project of reposting it with fresher eyes. I think I could do a lot with my style now and the clunky bits I could improve on! Let me know what you guys think! Thank you, Anon, sorry I rambled so much XOXOXO. You’re a gem!!!

look here’s what i think people are missing here: you don’t need to know anything about my character to write with me. you don’t need to have read a single comic. you don’t need to have watched any movie. you could’ve pulled a cap, been in ice for the last two decades, be new to the scene and not know any of these characters, and we’d still be in a great place to plot.

why? because it’s my job to know my character. i know my character’s powers, abilities, strengths, weaknesses, personality--i know them, and their universe/surroundings. that’s what i’m bringing to the table--and you should bring your character and your knowledge to the table!

look i’m just going to throw out stuff now: i actually know like... next to nothing about thor. i don’t! he’s big, he’s a god, he does the boomy booms, speaks in old english. that’s more or less the gist of what i know--but if i wanted to strike up a plot with a thor rper, i’m not going to roll up having researched their character. sure, i might google a bit to skim a wiki so i don’t make an absolute fool of myself--or hey, maybe read those handy bios we all slap together so we have information specific to their interpretation of the character! you know! like we all say we do but don’t!

anyway--point is, i don’t roll up to a thor rper knowing all there is to know about thor. i roll up going ‘hey i saw this one thing for steve and thor and i thought it was neat what do you think about it.’ because surprise!--plotting’s a conversation. i don’t want to be told a 3 act structure that you’ve already figured out for your OTP and i’m just supposed to write half of it for you. i want to be involved in this--and that’s why i bring my stupidly excessive knowledge of 616 steve rogers. and that’s why we start off with scenarios and work with each other and get something that works for both of us.

and that’s why these mashups work. because you know about your thing and i know about my thing and we find some mutual ground and mash shit together and yeah, maybe it’s not comic correct, or maybe it’s not something mentioned in the mcu yet, but like--we’re all writers ya’ll, let’s show a little creativity and play around the with canon bits that interest us. the plot practically writes itself when everyone knows their own characters and is willing to work with each other.

so like... everybody chill out, bring your nerd knowledge about your muse and just be willing to improv and plot with people from different sandboxes
