George A. Romero writes and directs Monkey Shines, an adaptation of Michael Stewartâs 1983 British novel of the same title. Despite the monkey with the clapping cymbals on the poster, this movie has nothing to do with Stephin King. An excellent cast (Jason Beghe, John Pankow, Kate McNeil, Joyce Van Patten, Christine Forrest, Stephen Root, Janine Turner, and Stanley Tucci) and detailed storytelling that crosses all the tâs and almost dots all the iâs, might just make this work. And beware if you have a phobia regarding monkeys with sharp objects! Youâve been warned.
At the time of this writing, Monkey Shines is available to stream from Tubi, Pluto TV, and multiple PPV sources.Â
Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazineâs Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episodeâs film, chosen by Chad, will be The Incubus (1981) from the novel by Ray Russell [Mr. Sardonicaus (1961) and X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes (1963)] and starring John Cassavetes.

Ah no sorry, that's @beemovieerotica that wrote "OoOOooh I hope the monster in my closet doesn't come out and FUCK me by beemovieerotica" where Monsters Inc created a top secret fuck division narrowing in on the furry population in order to solve their city's energy crisis while being secretly investigated by the CIA, and the US President Maryanne Williamson.
Kieran is incredibly wonderful at taking an absolutely absurd and typically horny premise, and turning it into a genuine lived experience and fully-fleshed out world for the characters inside it. He's able to stay extremely focused in his writing, and he's finished almost every story. Another couple really good ones that I recommend are
Make Pies and Bake the Dead, a Hannibal/Pushing Daisies crossover
Any Port in a Storm, a Davy Jones/Will Turner story in which Pirates of the Caribbean never happened, the crew is still cursed, and they've got the Dutchman docked as a coffee shop/embassy (none of them are US citizens) in modern day Portland
And for his most straight-edged story, It is, it is a glorious thing, to be a pirate king, in which Pirate King Elizabeth Turner is charged by Calypso to bring down the English, Spanish, and French empires in exchange for the resurrection of her failed ferryman husband.
Kieran is an absolutely incredible writing, that's somehow able to make an incredibly compelling and emotionally wrought story out of even a Ratatoutille/Breaking Bad crossover, or when he's describing the selfless timeless state of the 12th monster month.
Which, obviously, is Granuary.
it's almost the anniversary since I started writing again for the first time in years. went through a really hard time, kept writing, got help, kept writing, had some more ups and downs, and regardless I'm still writing
here's some chapter titles without context of my ongoing 313k monstrosity
It started out purposefully bleak and doomed, and then exploded into something with interplaner carny food, deals with devils, monster sex that's incredibly crucial to the plot, an electric lute with a magical amplifier, an ancient elven teenaged surfer bro, the Dark Urge's philanthropic orphan charity, and absolutely most importantly, there's Eugenia the Giant Man-Eating Flytrap.
here's some more things without context
anyway, hope y'all are doing well, and that all of y'all keep doing whatever brings you joy.
especially if it's absurd.
(Also a very, very deep thank you to @beemovieerotica @cursedhaglette and @drakonmo for indulging my insanity in this thing all the while. One of the best things about this story has been the ability to share and make it grow with other people, who've offered me so much insight and support along the way. I really promise this time that I'm so close to halfway done.)

Storyboard: Woodentop (1.4, Thames, 1983)
"You're wondering why I asked him his name, right?"
"Yes, I am."
"Well, I asked him his name because there have been a spate of break-ins on the patch recently -"
"I, I know, there's, um -"
"Now, a paperboy might just know who's home and who's away, right? I'll check, when we get back to the nick, if all the injured parties have a paper delivered; if so, from which shop. Follow me?"
"Oh yes!"
"CID may well have overlooked the possibility. You'll learn."
#storyboard#Woodentop#classic tv#1983#Single play#the bill#Mark wingett#Gary olsen#Trudie Goodwin#Peter Dean#Jon Croft#Robert Pugh#Chris jenkinson#Colin Blumenau#Richard Huw#Paul mckenzie#Gary hailes#Colin mccormack#Maryann Turner#Geoff mcqueen#Peter cregeen#And we're off! The first of the Storyboards to get past the pilot stage. It's not hard to see why either; the police#Procedural has always been a reliable and popular TV format and with Dixon z cars and its many spinoffs and the sweeney all some time gone#The schedules were crying out for the grubby 1980s take on a cops and robbers drama. Originally titled Old Bill but changed to woodentop#(before reverting back to The Bill and soldiering on for some 26 years) this is a pretty strong script. The new starter being introduced to#The job and his colleagues is a nifty way to provide background and exposition (Rosenthal did the same thing a few years later with#London's Burning which would also spawn a long lived series). Some of the faces here would spend the greatest part of their careers in the#Same role among them Wingett and Goodwin. Having grown up with the bill it's interesting to see where it all started but more than that#This is a decent play in its own right. Of the actors that didn't make it over to the series its a shame Bob Pugh didn't stick around; he#Steals his few scenes here by growling at everyone and being perfectly unreasonable and unpleasant in a most satisfying way

The Halloween Killer: The Murder of Lisa Ann French
On Halloween night in 1973, a nine year old girl from Wisconsin was excited about dressing up in her costume and going out to get free candy, just like every other child on Halloween. However, this little girl's night took a turn for the worst when she innocently approached her neighbors doorstep with the words, âTrick or Treat.â
Lisa Ann French was born on June 2nd, 1964, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin to parents Allan and Maryann French. She was living with her mother and stepfather, Bruce De Pauw, along with her newborn half-brother. At the time of her death, Lisa was in 4th grade and attended Chegwin Elementary School, and she was also in the girl scouts. The French family lived just half a block down from her killer, Gerald Miles Turner Jr, and were very friendly and well-acquainted with Gerald and his former girlfriend, Arlene Penn. The two had an infant together, and Lisa would often spend time with them so she could see the baby, and Gerald also once shared a rented side of a duplex with the French family as well. Prior to Lisaâs death, Gerald didnât have any sex offenses against him. He did however sexually assault his 15 year old babysitter, but that accusation didnât come out until after Lisaâs murder.
On the night of the murder, Lisa left her home around 5:45PM in her hobo costume, wearing a black felt hat, green parka, jeans with blue masking tape on them, and added freckles on her cheeks. She was originally supposed to go trick or treating with her friend, Ann Parker, but she had gotten in trouble and wasnât allowed to go out that night. Lisa made a stop at another friend's house, along with the house of one of her teachers before heading over to Geraldâs residence for candy. Lisa excitedly approached his doorstep with her candy bag wide open, and her smile lit up when he put the free candy into her bag. According to Gerald, he was sexually motivated as soon as he saw her, and began to discuss candy with the vulnerable nine year old. He lured her into his home with the promise of more candy, where he then closed his door, grabbed her, brought her into his bedroom and proceeded to sexually assault her.
Gerald claimed that at some point after he finished the assault, he noticed that Lisa had stopped breathing, and tried to revive her. He stopped trying once he heard his girlfriend come home. When Arlene was questioned, she claimed that she arrived home around 7PM, and when she saw Gerald, he was wearing a robe and kept telling her that he wasnât feeling well. She also claimed that he had made multiple trips to the bedroom to lie down, which had their attached bathroom to it, where he had placed her body. Gerald claimed that after Arlene left the home again around 8PM to visit her mother, he stuffed Lisaâs body into one bag, and her clothes into another, and drove her body to Taycheedah, Wisconsin, and left the bags in a farm field. In an attempt to avoid any evidence being left behind, he wore socks on his hands to prevent fingerprints, and wiped down Lisaâs shoes and the zipper on her jacket.
When Lisa didnât return home at 7PM when she was told to, her mother began to worry about her. By the time 10PM rolled around, a search party was already out looking for her. The search party was a county wide extensive search, which included over 5,000 volunteers, 700 block parents (a large volunteer based program for child safety and crime prevention across Canada), auxiliary police officers, some of the girl scout members, and The United States National Guard. The search went on for four days, before a farmer named Gerald Braun stumbled upon two brown plastic bags behind a wired fence, around 11:30AM on November 3rd. The bags contained Lisaâs nude body, and her Halloween costume. Lisaâs autopsy concluded that her death was caused by asphyxiation, but a pathologist also stated that she couldâve died from circulatory shock due to the sexual trauma that she endured. A $10,000 reward was posted for the capture of Lisaâs killer.
Gerald Turner was a suspect right from the start, but it took nine months of questioning and testing before he finally gave his confession on August 8th, 1974, which he later would retract. During these nine months, police had him undergo a polygraph test, which came back with inconclusive results, and he refused to take a second one. Police also took his body hair and fibers from his bedspread, and his hair was a positive match on Lisaâs body and clothing. In his confession he stated that his attack was completely sexually motivated, he performed anal intercourse on her, and when he noticed she stopped breathing, he put his head over her chest and heard her heart still beating. He tried to revive her, but ultimately had to stop trying when his girlfriend pulled up to the house. Gerald was charged and convicted on February 4th, 1975, for second degree murder, acts of sexual perversion, and enticing a child for immoral purposes, and was sentenced to 38 years and 6 months in prison.
Gerald Turner was paroled on October 13th, 1992, after only serving 17 years and 8 months of his sentencing due to âgood behavior.â This caused numerous community protests and public outrage, which prompted lawmakers to create the sexual predator law Wisconsin Chapter 980 nicknamed âTurners Law,â and was ratified on May 26th, 1994. This law allows criminals who have been paroled or released to be sent to mental institutions if theyâre deemed to have âsubstantial probabilityâ to commit another crime. On November 23rd, 1993, Gerald was sent back to prison after a Department of Corrections appeal ruled that they had miscalculated his mandatory parole release from his good behavior.
On January 9th, 1998, Gerald had a four day parole trial and was ruled that he was not a violent sexual predator, therefor he could not be detained at a treatment center under âTurners Law,â and was allowed to begin his second mandatory parole. He was then returned to prison for an additional 15 years after violating his parole in 2003, when a large amount of pornographic material was found in his possession. After his 15 year sentence was completed, he was allowed to be released without parole restrictions, until Lisaâs mother filed a petition to keep Gerald detained in a treatment center. The petition gained over 34 thousand signatures, and Gerald Turner is currently detained at Sand Ridge Secure Treatment Center in Mauston, Wisconsin. The last report to have his status tried again was set for October 2020, but I havenât been able to find any further information about it.

Lisa French: Murdered Trick or TreatingÂ
Lisa French had left her home at around 5:45 p.m. dressed as a hobo wearing a black felt hat, a green parka with blue masking tape on her jeans and dotted freckles on her cheeks. French originally intended to be accompanied by another friend, Ann Parker, on her way to an outdoor halloween party at Pumpkin Place on East Bank Street, but Parker had gotten in trouble with her parents and had been grounded so she had to stay at home, leaving French to trick-or-treat by herself.Â
It was reported that French had made previous stops at a classmate's house and the house of Karen Bauknect, a teacher of hers for candy before she made her way to Turner's residence with the hopes of receiving more candy. When she arrived at Turner's home, she rang his doorbell and said "trick-or-treat" as she walked into his open doorway, with her candy bag opened as Turner came to the door. According to Turner's confession, Turner and French had begun to talk about candy and at some point during their encounter, Turner had lured her into his bedroom where he would proceed to violently sexually assault and murder French.
At some point after the sexual assault, Turner said that he attempted to revive the 9-year-old girl after she stopped breathing until his girlfriend, Arlene Penn, had arrived at the home. According to Penn, she arrived at the home at around 7 p.m., after attending the same halloween party with their child that French was supposed to attend that night as well. When she found Turner, he was wearing a bathrobe and claimed multiple times that he was "sick". Penn also said that Turner had made several trips to the bedroom to lie down. French's body had been placed in the bathroom adjacent to the bedroom, according to Turner's confession.
After Penn left the residence at around 8:00 p.m. to go visit her mother, Turner had stuffed French's body and clothes into separate bags and drove her body to Taycheedah, Wisconsin, where he discarded her corpse on McCabe Road in a farm field. Turner had worn socks on his hands when moving French, in an effort to avoid having the evidence of fingerprints on Lisa's body or on the crime scene. He had also wiped down French's shoes and the zipper of her parka jacket after she was killed. French's mother, Maryann Gehrig, had started to grow worried about French's whereabouts when she did not returned home at her mother's instructed 7 p.m. curfew. By 10:00 p.m. a search party had arose and begun looking for the young girl.
On November 3, 1973 at 11:30 a.m., her body was discovered in two brown plastic bags behind a barbed wire fence near a forest on McCabe road, one containing French's naked corpse, the other containing the clothing from her halloween costume. An autopsy performed on French's body had revealed that French had died from asphyxiation though a pathologist had also stated she had died from circulatory shock from the sexual trauma that she endured.

On the first weekend in November 2018 I received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the World Fantasy Convention. Great though the honour was, initially I was reluctant to make the trip down to Baltimore to receive it in person due to the political climate in the US. But MaryAnn and various friends wore me down until I finally agreed to go. Iâm glad I did.
I saw little of the pettiness and bullying that the current White House administration espouses except from one particularly obnoxious TSA agent as we were leaving the country. Most of my time was spent in the cocoon of the convention hotel where the civility and warmth of the attendees was the rule. I got to spend time and chat with so many wonderful readers and my peersâmost of whom I hadnât seen since the WFC in Saratoga Springs back in 2015.
Highlights were hanging with Nina Kiriki Hoffman, Evonne T., Charles Vess & Karen Shaffer, Ellen Klages and Leslie Howle throughout the weekend. Making music with the vastly talented Sarah Pinsker. A visit to the aquarium and the walk we took to Evonneâs recommendation of Faidleyâs where we had the very best of crab cakes. Watching Greg Manchess do a live portrait of Michael Swanwick. Being surprised by Sara Felix flying up from Austin for Saturday night just to see us. Making new friends such as Linda Addison and Clarence âZig Zagâ Young. A dinner with Betsy Wolheim, another with Joe Monti. Sharing a table at the banquet with Joe & Gay Haldeman. Finally meeting Jonathan Strahan after so many years of only electronic communication. Â Receiving my award from my editor at The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Gordon Van Gelder. Being able to cheer for Ellen Klages when she won her award for her book Passing Strange and Greg for his win as Best Artist. The opening speech by Linda Addison and the acceptance speeches by Fonda Lee and Natalia Theodoridou.
Hereâs the speech I gave when accepting my award:
First of all Iâd like to thank the judges for this honourâitâs an especially good year for it to happen since Iâm sharing it with Betsy Wolheim, the heart behind DAW Books. Iâve been enjoying DAW Books from when they first burst upon the scene with their distinctive yellow spines to the present day where they still publish some of my favourite writers such as Tanya Huff and Seanan McGuire.
Iâd also like to send out my appreciation to the con committee for all their kindness and help.
No one wants to hear a long rambling acceptance speechâless is more, after allâbut an honour such as this only comes around once in a lifetime and there are a number of people I really need to thank for their help and support in making my career what it is.
The impulse in a situation such as this to name and thank everyone who has ever been a part of this journey I embarked on back in the seventies when I stopped being the person who wrote simply for fun and the need to tell stories and became someone who still loves and appreciates his career but also wants to make a living doing it. So I do want to thank everyone who has supported me through the years. All of the editors Iâve been lucky enough to work withâand especially Tom Doherty, Patrick Nielsen Hayden and all the folks at Tor who gave my books a home for so many years. My peers and friends for their support and my agent Russ Galen whoâs treated me so well and is always ready to try something new.
And of course all the readers who continue to make my career a viable possibility. I have the best readers in the world and because of them I have the best job in the world.
But I would like to specifically thank a few people who made a real difference.
My buddy Rodger Turner has been along on this journey since the very beginning. We both started out as readers. While I went on to write, Rodger has been more behind the scenes, owning an indie book store for a while, doing a little publishing, serving on the WFC executive and doing websites for the likes of World Horror, The Magazine of F&SF and authors like Tim Powers and myself. Heâs been a support through all the ups and down of my career and we still get together to talk books once a week.
Terri Windling started out as my editor and became a friend who, if I get to pick a family of choice, is definitely my sister. In terms of my writing sheâs the one who encouraged me to keep telling stories in a contemporary setting and, especially in the early years, gave them a home. She also taught me more about writing and my own voice than any number of writing tutorials and editors combined.
When I first started writing dinosaurs still roamed the world and we communicated by writing letters. Thatâs how I met Charles Vess and itâs how we knew each other for many years. We were in pretty much the same place with our respective careers and cheered each other on in amidst yakking about the books, art and music we loved. Since those early days weâve collaborated on a number of projects but the thing I still like best is hanging around with him and his wife Karenâwho I might add, is a trickster, so be careful what you wish for around her. A hundred years from now theyâll be telling Karen stories in the Virginia hills just as they tell Jack stories now.
Nina Kiriki Hoffman hasnât been as much an influence on my writing as on my life. She lives every day to its fullest and I can assure you that you wonât go wrong in a confusing situation to ask yourself, what would Nina do? If itâs not always the right thing itâs invariably the most fun.
I also count Leslie Howle among the dear friends that came my way through my writing. I know many of you have experienced her generous hospitality and encouragement first hand. We should all have such steadfast friends cheering us on.
Lastly I want to thank my wife MaryAnn although saying thanks seems so inadequate. She should be standing up here with me. Weâve been a partnership for decades and without her participation in my career I probably wouldnât be in front of you accepting this honour. So this oneâs for you, dear heart, and may we keep making stories for many years to come. And we might even share a few of the ones that get written down.
We live in a divisive and perilous timeânot simply in this country or my home province of Ontario, but all over the world. To my American friends, I hope youâve registered to vote. And if you have I urge you to go out and exercise that right on Tuesday.
Remember that democracy is not a free ride but a responsibility.

Red Letter Day: Amazing Stories (1.4, Granada, 1976)
"He's a nutter, Lily!"
"Just eccentric, Dad. He's a writer."
#red letter day#amazing stories#Howard schuman#1976#Classic tv#granada#Single play#Joe melia#Rula lenska#John normington#Harold kasket#Ian mcdiarmid#Maryann turner#Herbert ramskill#Richard willis#Peter plummer#Based on the first three episodes you'd be forgiven for assuming that red letter day as a whole was a series characterised by#Kitchen sink drama in a light comedy setting. But then... This. I don't entirely know what to make of this. Schuman was just on the#Cusp of his most significant writing credit. A short while after this first aired rock follies premiered on tv. Schuman created and wrote#The entire series. Had the producers seen this im not so sure he would have got the go ahead... Not that it's bad exactly.#It's just that he jettisons all sense of reality and delivers a story about a science fiction writer who's daydreaming about his family#Turning into menacing vegetables. Then he goes to a sci fi convention (rather adorably called a sci fi jamboree) where he meets his hero#Another sci fi writer who is even more unbalanced and carries his stuffed dog with him everywhere. It's... Bizarre to say the least#Maybe schuman was going for avant garde but it all looks painfully cheap (all the convention scenes are shot with horrible blue screen and#I don't really understand why they couldn't just.. Build a convention set?). Weirdly there are hints that underneath it all this actually#Is gritty kitchen sink drama and that melia's character is escaping into his fantasy world to get away from the drudgeries and horror of#Modern family life. But any subtext is buried rather deep by the highly stylised sets and... Uh.. Shall we say some#Variable performances. Melia is a great favourite of mine and he does as well as he can with some challenging material#It's stolen out from under him by normington who gets some wonderful moments of bafflement as the seemingly only sane person in the room#Very weird. A little too self aware and indulgently abstract. Not without laughs but not all of them intentional i fear

Survivor 42 Premiere: Power Rankings
These are my highly scientific and very much subject-to-change power rankings of the Survivor 42 castaways based purely on Episode 1!
18. Jackson Fox (EVACUATED): Ooh boy. Jackson has quite the story--and Iâm glad we got to hear it--but I canât help but feel icky about the circumstances of his departure. If the production team found out about his meds before filming started, why was he allowed to begin the competition? It seems the only plausible answers are 1) Production genuinely didnât know his health would be at risk until Day 2 (even though he had told them just before filming began), or 2) they knew they had to remove him from the game, but wanted to let him get some camera time so he could share his story with the world. I donât buy theory #1, and #2 seems a bit exploitative IMO (not to mention it robbed one of the alternates the chance to compete, and made the first immunity challenge MUCH harder). Jackson handled the situation with grace and I wish him nothing but the best, but this whole situation doesnât sit right with me!
17. Zach Wurtenberger (ELIMINATED): This one hurts! From the moment Zach had his first encounter with Jeff on the beach (âI donât know... I was trying, man..â) I was all-in on this Stephen Fischbach 2.0. A shame to see such a fun presence and potential narrator get taken from us on episode 1, but such is Survivor. Turns out there was only room for 1 twink on the Ika tribe!
16. Tori Meehan: Lying by saying youâre a âcaretakerâ rather than a therapist is the kind of unnecessary lie that suggests her mouth might get herself in trouble and she wonât have the self-awareness to get her out of it. Tori narrowly survives week 1, but given the relative physical weakness of her tribe, her days could be numbered.Â
15. Rocksroy Bailey: This stay-at-home dad forgot how to talk to people who arenât his children, and frankly I canât blame him. But given his disappointing performance in the challenge, heâll need to significantly step up his physical game in order to win over his tribemates who are already growing tired of him.Â
14. Mike Turner: I love his New Jersey energy, but in modern Survivor I worry about the longevity of someone who is 10 years older than anyone else out there.Â
13. Daniel Strunk: Glad his shoulder is back in place! But one immunity challenge loss and I worry that injury will make him an easy target.
12. Marya Sherron: No real reason for the low ranking except for a) she appeared to blame herself for her teamâs loss in the reward challenge, and b) she was barely in the edit otherwise.Â
11. Lindsay Dolashewich: I donât really remember her either way..
10. Chanelle Howell: Another mostly non-factor in the edit. But itâs early and I have high hopes for Chanelle.Â
9. Jonathan Young: Theyâll keep Tarzan around a few weeks, but will cut him before the merge if theyâre smart.Â
8. Omar Zaheer: I like Omar! He seems charming and who doesnât love veterinarian.Â
7. Lydia Meredith: If Hannah Shapiro was the quintessential Millennial on Millennials vs. Gen X, then Lydia is here to represent Gen Z. The castaway with by far the best Twitter presence so far (see here), she makes me feel YOUNG and I like that. Lydia seems like she might be a few days away from a conditions-driven meltdown, but as long as she can remain mentally in the game I think sheâll be a strong presence.Â
6. Romeo Escobar: Romeo managed to keep the target off of his twink-ass in Week 1, when âkeeping the tribe strongâ fever is typically at its highest. Good for Romeo.
5. Hai Giang: Hai seems smart and cool and I think heâs gonna go far.
4. Maryanne Oketch: Maryanne is... a LOT. She loves the camera, and the camera loves her. Maryanne also seems to wear her heart on her sleeve (the fact that she was crying more about Jacksonâs removal from the game more than Jackson was a little much), so I worry about her ability to deceive. But the edit is all-in on Maryanne--and she now has an extra vote!--so I think sheâll be here for a while.Â
3. Swati Goel: She seems confident and smart as hell.
2. Jenny Kim: Jenny a) led her team to victory on the count-the-triangles challenge, and b) displayed an impressive sense of awareness by saving her vote when she knew Drea & Maryanne were likely to risk theirs. Gonna go far methinks!
1. Drea Wheeler: Drea is giving me the total package so far: strong physical game, appears to get along with everyone (it seemed like her name was never close to the chopping block tonight), and a strategic threat. Throw in the extra vote she earned by risking her vote, and sheâs my Day 1 choice for the winner.Â
