282 - Music (Patreon Selects)
Tumblr media
On top of all the horrors of the pandemic, let's not forget that that time also gave us cringe cinema directed by Sia. This week, we come to you with another Patreon Selects, where sponsor listener Stuart has tasked us with that very film. Initially shot in 2017, Sia's Music cast Kate Hudson as a troublesome drug dealer tasked with taking over the care of her younger autistic sister, played by Sia protege Maddie Ziegler. The ill-conceived film earned a deserved firestorm of outcry for Sia not casting a neurodivergent performer and the singer's initial dismissive reactions to the controversy, but then earned two shock Golden Globe nominations in the Musical/Comedy categories.
This episode, we unpack all that makes this our presumed worst film we have yet to discuss. We also talk about supporting star Leslie Odom Jr.'s presence in the film in the same season as his dual Oscar nominations for One Night in Miami..., Hudson's newfound music career, and the films that the Globes could have sensibly nominated in Music's place.
Topics also include whatever the hell Mary Kay Place is doing in this movie, Hudson and Odom Jr. in Glass Onion, and the current hideous Globe statue.

'Thirteen Women' – Irene Dunne vs. Myrna Loy on Criterion Channel
Thirteen Women (1932) is a “Ten Little Indians”-style thriller set in a circle of sorority sisters whose planned reunion is marred with premonitions of death, murder, and suicide sent by a swami (C. Henry Gordon) whose astrological readings are all the rage in their society. Irene Dunne is Laura Stanhope, the good girl center of the sorority society, and Myrna Loy is Ursula Georgi, the exotic…

the scene in s02e14 Hot Lips and Empty Arms where Margaret walks in on HawkTrapHenry watching porn together (🥰), rips Henry up for being an incompetent CO and demands a transfer lifts heavily from the (rancid, horrifically misogynistic) scenes in the MASH novel (by Richard Hooker) and 1970 movie (Dir: Robert Altman) where she does the same thing. the difference is, in the movie and book her outburst is triggered when the camp, led by Hawkeye and Trapper, starts sexually harassing her, which the creators in both instances want us to accept she "deserves" because she loves the army.
but on the show, Margaret is frustrated because she feels like she's falling behind in life, and because Frank doesn't really love her, she tells him as much. Her movie and book counterparts don't even have a Frank to lean on at this point, because he's been run out of the camp. and her outburst in this episode is specifically triggered when she catches the guys watching porn which is harmless*.
not only is it better because it's not rapey, imo it's good that Hawkeye says plainly "war is far more obscene than naked bodies having sex" because that's not a mainstream opinion and this was a primetime sitcom, if you can get a message like that past the radar, you damn well should.
great example of a derivative work delivering the exact same messaging of the franchise it's related to but doing it more effectively and in a way that was ahead of its time, and aged pretty well in comparison. Hot Lips and Empty Arms was written by Linda Bloodworth and Mary Kay Place, so make of that what you will.

I’m going through your fanfics and master lists again and it’s immeasurably entertaining and accurate
One thing I noticed is that a few days ago, there were some asks you answered about Elena’s appearance being overhyped and I SO AGREE. Elena is pretty sure, but the show made it seem like she was this head turning knockout, which was really unrealistic and odd because Elena was pretty/beautiful in a simple girl next door way. It wasn’t like when I looked at some shots of Bonnie and would think wow she’s so striking and gorgeous, and a big part of Elena’s looks was that she had the best makeup and clothes.
It’s seriously unreal how Elena herself seemed to have no insecurities about herself, when having people like Rebekah or Bonnie around who were more striking/obviously beautiful, and how people always seemed to be insecure about her only and not the other way around.
Have you hinted at this in your fanfics ? I’ve recently binged a lot of them, and in the bonkai regency series (so perfect BTW) and Elena is called the beautiful sister and when king Kai comes to a ball, Bonnie herself says “ This will not be easy, Elena. Alas, everyone notices you.”
Thank you! So, for that Bonkai series, I was definitely playing with the way the show treated Elena and framed Elena and treated Bonnie and framed Bonnie because Bonkai is modelled after Anne and Henry (the more fictionalized Anne and Henry as opposed to the historical) and a part of that was making Elena kind of Mary Boleyn-esque in that she was first sort of presented as the one to make Henry fall in love wit herh because she was seen as the pretty sister and I thought that idea of Alaric and Damon presenting Elena to Kai worked well because in the TVD-verse everyone just loves Elena
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and all Elena really has to do is show up
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and Bonnie sort of being behind the scenes to make sure that Elena gets noticed by Kai is like how in the show Bonnie is the one who actually does all of the work and the way Alaric and Damon treat her was supposed to mirror how the other characters feel entitled to her labour so a scene like this
“For the king to notice Elena as you very well know. His appetite for beautiful women is no secret and Elena captivates men with ease, it’s frankly almost frightening. With the right circumstances, she would be able to have the King’s ear, which would aid in the elevation of this family.”
“You and father seem to have this all figured out, I don’t understand why I must return to court as well.”
“Elena is the beautiful sister, you are the cunning one. It is not enough for her to win the King’s attention, she needs to retain it. We would have you help her in this respect.”
“Is my duty to be a madam then. To aid in the whoring of my sister’s dignity.”
Damon took a hold of Bonnie’s wrist and forcefully brought her to him. “Your duty is to elevate this family, Bonnie.”
is kind of like a mirror to this
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
so Bonnie saying that line: “ This will not be easy, Elena. Alas, everyone notices you.” is basically her role, it's what Alaric and Damon and society effectively made her role, it was kind of partnered with this sentiment
Tumblr media
but because it's a Bonkai fic and a Bonnie-centric fic, I also wanted to call attention to how there is an inflated sense of beauty and/or interest in Elena and Kai being the one to indicate that when they have their dance because Bonnie keeps pushing Elena on him because that's her role and he's basically like, who gives a fuck about Elena?
“Yes. Elena,” said Bonnie. “I’m sure you’ve noticed her, she’s like the sun.”
“I’ve seen no sun in this court, only the lustrous beauty of the moon.”
Bonnie grinned, trying to find humble words. “I’m sure the sun will rise soon enough in court. I’ve been told it’s only natural that the sun outshines the moon.”
She and Malachai glided toward one another, the noses of their masks nearly touching, his blue eyes piercing into her green ones as they twirled in a tight circle. Bonnie held her breath; she would surely lose herself in his gaze, shivers erupted all along her body, along her arms and back, along her legs and breasts, his stare touched every part of her body. “But is it not true, Lady Bonnie, that the moon eclipses the sun?”
and he in fact calls her more beautiful and more intriguing hence the eclipse line.
And because I am anti-Bamon but do find the Somergraham chemistry palpable and intriguing by itself, the way that Damon acts with Bonnie in the fic is this idea of possessiveness and jealousy and wanting her all to himself,
“Yes,” said Damon quietly. “The King is in love with you.”
Bonnie looked up at him and seeing the subtle rage in his eyes, glanced away.
*
She opened it slightly but Damon blocked her before she could leave. “What is this about?” he whispered. “You’re not … you’re not falling in love with him are you?”
Damon glared down at her and Bonnie narrowed her eyes in regard; the expression on his face was the same one Lorenzo had whenever she told him of a man who came courting except there wasn’t sorrow beneath Damon’s jealousy like with Lorenzo, there was only venom. He’d chosen both, to hate her and to love her and his indecision irritated Bonnie as it made her life more difficult.
which I took from the way that the Somergraham chemistry and Bamon narrative kind of confused a lot of readings of scenes in season 7 especially.
And then there's Enzo who is just lost in love with her and wants her to experience the maddening way he loves her so she can understand just how consuming his love for her is
Lorenzo clenched his hair, his mouth opening and closing. “Is it so easy for you to cut ties with me?”
“Is that a question you would like me to answer?”
He stared at her for a few moments, his eyes wild and anguished, and then rushed forward and kissed her hard on the mouth. After a beat Bonnie raised her hands to put them on the sides of his head.
“One day, Bonnie Bennett,” said Lorenzo between kisses. “One day I hope you will fall madly in love. I hope a man will consume your every thought, your every waking breath so you can suffer this torture.”
Bonnie guided Lorenzo’s head to her neck. “Unlikely,” she said.
and then you have Kai who will rip an entire kingdom apart for her
“Are you saying that binding your name to mine will sully yours?”
“I am saying that people will talk!”
“Then l will cut out their tongues!” he roared.
Bonnie’s lips parted as Malachai strode over to her. He placed his hands on either side of her face, piercing his eyes into hers. “I will strike down anyone who dares to speak out against you!”
She trembled slightly at the earnest fury in Malachai’s voice. He meant it. Every word.
meanwhile there's Elena who really has only captured Stefan's eye so despite the dialogue of how beautiful Elena is and how everyone wants her, in reality with this fic, it's Bonnie who everyone wants.

Irene Dunne and Myrna Loy in Thirteen Women (George Archainbaud, 1932)
Cast: Irene Dunne, Myrna Loy, Ricardo Cortez, Jill Esmond, Mary Duncan, Kay Johnson, Florence Eldridge, C. Henry Gordon, Peg Entwistle, Harriet Hagman, Edward Pawley, Blanche Friderici, Wally Albright. Screenplay: Bartlett Cormack, Samuel Ornitz, based on a novel by Tiffany Thayer. Cinematography: Leo Tover. Art direction: Carroll Clark. Film editing: Charles L. Kimball. Music: Max Steiner.
Myrna Loy was born Myrna Williams in Helena, Montana, but you wouldn't know it from the way Hollywood often cast her at the start of her career in the '20s and '30s. Her role in Thirteen Women is probably the purest example of her work as the stereotypical sinister Eurasian. She plays Ursula Georgi, whom the cop played by Ricardo Cortez scorns as "Half-breed type. Half Hindu, half Javanese, I don't know." (Actually, Cortez himself knew something about crossing ethnic lines: He was born Jacob Krantz in New York, but Hollywood changed his name to capitalize on the vogue for Latin lovers like Rudolph Valentino and Ramon Novarro, and later claimed first that he was French and later that he was born in Vienna.) Ursula seeks revenge on the women who belonged to a sorority at a girls' college and blackballed her when she sought admission. She seeks out a phony seer known as Swami Yogadachi (C. Henry Gordon), whose horoscope readings the girls sought out, and hypnotizes him into sending them poison-pen readings that predict dire events. Two of the girls, the sisters June (Mary Duncan) and May Raskob (Harriet Hagman), have become trapeze artists, and June is so unnerved by the fake reading that she lets May fall to her death during a stunt and goes mad as a consequence. As others fall prey to Ursula's schemes, some of the survivors gather at the home of Laura Stanhope (Irene Dunne), who thinks that their hysteria over the deaths is absurd. Laura is the single mother of a son, Bobby (Wally Albright), who is one of those cloyingly cute movie children -- he calls her "Mumsy." But even Laura's calm vanishes when Ursula makes Bobby her next target. In addition to being stupidly racist, the movie is sheer hokum, a cockamamie blend of revenge thriller and police procedural, and it was not much of a success at the box office, even after RKO cut 14 minutes from it after test screenings -- one of the reasons why we learn the fates of only 10 of the 13 women. One of the performances cut to only four minutes was that of Peg Entwistle, who played Hazel, the one who kills her husband and goes to prison. Entwistle was reportedly so despondent about her movie career that she climbed to the top of one of the letters on the Hollywood sign (reports vary on whether it was the H or the D) and jumped to her death. As for Loy, this was her last outing as a Eurasian vamp: The Thin Man (W.S. Van Dyke, 1934) changed her screen image to that of the witty and soignée wife, most often of William Powell.

Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which represents nearly two million employees in healthcare, the public sector and property services in the United States and Canada, has called for ending the war on Gaza. “We call for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and the delivery of life-saving food, water, medicine and other resources to the people of Gaza,” SEIU President Mary Kay Henry said in a statement. She added that the demand is “rooted in the pain” felt by the union’s members, including “the hundreds of thousands of SEIU healthcare workers who see themselves in the healthcare workers in Gaza who have been killed trying to save lives”. Labour movements, a traditional constituency in the Democratic Party of US President Joe Biden, have been increasingly backing the call for a ceasefire, adding to the pressure against the White House’s unwavering support for the war.
-- "Large US labour union calls for ceasefire in Gaza" by Maziar Motamedi and Nils Adler for Al Jazeera, 22 Jan 2024 16:50 GMT
The full statement from SEIU can be read here.

🔎 YA Under the Radar Part 6 🔍
for a long time, I've been keeping (and eventually posting) lists of YA books I read that have received less attention than they deserve. it's been more than 12 months since I posted the last list in this series but I finally hit 50 the other day so here it is, the latest instalment of my YA Under the Radar series 😊
all of these books have less than 15,000 ratings on Goodreads, give or take, and were books that I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend. I've marked ones with queer rep with pride flag emojis and ones with disability rep with wheelchair symbols. be sure to check them out!

Okay, multiversal casino staff and a bit of lore before I get too sucked into my hyperfixations and forget about it
[NOTE 1 !! If you want to make a similar concept feel free but do not take my concept entirely! You can make something SIMILAR but not EXACT replica please! I don't mind inspiration but do tag me in any art or rambles because I LOVE to see people be inspired by things or something I make!]
[NOTE 2 !! Some of these characters may act out of canon when I draw them (If I do), some of their Lore might be different, there is an explanation for it here, don't pummel me for it please.]
Origin/Main concept : The multiverse casino was originally made to be a hangout spot for people from other universes, somewhere where they could relax and discover other universes. This worked, but eventually they needed more Staff to help out on all the floors.
Why these specific characters for staff members? (Staff members are shown later) : I picked from my favorite characters from various fandoms (excluding any of my favorite children characters (theres only one here cause theyre celestes friend.)) and threw them here, they're all categorized by the card categorization I have.
Categorizations : There's both the card symbol organization, there will be a section for it at the end of the staff lists.
How does the multiverse casino get its staff? : they find almost exact copies of the universe they're trying to get a staff member from, and they talk to the person they're trying to bring in and see if they'd like to join. Old staff members get their memories of the casino entirely wiped before being returned back to their universes like nothing happened (this essentially happens whenever I leave a fandom)

The card symbols don't exactly determine where in the building they all work, it just really depends on their shifts.
Each of the main ocs in this story(Maxie, Stella, raegan, etc) has a favorite character they like to hang around, so heres that :
Maxie - Popee The Performer (PTP)
Stella - Sammy Lawrence (BATIM)
