First, my apologies to op for slightly derailing your post! We're discussing Zoe from Mary Cagle's/cubewatermelon's Sleepless Domain, who rubs right up against this trope.

That's her!

To the surprise of no one, I 100% agree with OP. Zoe is not bad trans rep in of herself, and having a trans character in a magical girl story is lovely, but the problem arises in how the story treats gender as something cosmically permanent.

From the TVTropes page:

[Shrug of God] How magical nonbinary people work. In this case, Mary as a cis woman feels unqualified to imply that something is the way it works for all nonbinary people, so she deliberately leaves it up to interpretation. The only thing stated about magical girls and gender is that the group who are eligible to become magical girls is the group to whom the label "girl" applies.

Which highlights just how constructed it all is. What about demigirls? what about genderfluid people? What happens to this "gender is innate and permanent" framing if a magical girl comes out as transmasc, or zoe decides being a girl wasn't for her? And, as always when it comes to the gender and sex binaries: how the hell do intersex people fit into this?

Saying "a genderfluid magical girl only has powers on Girl days" overlooks the point, a la "a trans girl could go up the girl's dormitory stairs at Hogwarts." The story's refusal to even entertain the idea of a "cis" she/they emphasizes how much wilful ignorance and sidestepping is required to maintain the gender binary while being "inclusive." Once you have a character who has transgressed the binary (in this case, from male to female) the story naturally invites these questions, and the solution the author employs is refusing to think about it.

Which isn't a solution at all.

Or, to quote my girlfriend, "It's so arbitrary. Thank god that the malicious force which grants magic powers to teenage girls so they can go die for capitalism is trans inclusive."

Or, myself: If it doesn't hold up to scrutiny, it doesn't deserve to be upheld.

I’m far less interested in fiction where it’s like “This power/ability/prophecy is gender specific but trans inclusive” and for more interested in fiction that just… doesn’t do that
