Why by Marvin V. Blake
"Why" by Marvin V. Blake tells the story of two sisters—one black, one whiteborn just three days apart on Virginia's Rosewood Plantation in 1847. In the divided South, two sisters grapple with race, identity, and love. A new tutor challenges their views, and a forbidden romance with a Comanche warrior forces a difficult choice.

While many authors and artists create stories out of their imagination, some freshly stem from their own experiences, particularly in their racial identity. Even now, the fight for human rights isn’t over. With that in mind, authors like Marvin Blake have also turned to writing as a creative outlet for their outcries. Why by Marvin V. Blake is a novel that circulates around the 1800s, where the lives of two sisters from two opposite racial backgrounds are apparent. In the book, their skin color is the predetermining factor that dictates their future…

MILKBOYNED:
I thought you were on my side!
BESTMARVIN:
I for one think my girlfriend’s boyfriend’s crush on my boyfriend is cute.

AND NOW FOR A HOLIDAY MESSAGE FROM ME TO YOU:
Whenever Christine and I talk about you (which we do a lot) we usually discuss who we’d cast you as in any given show etc. we’re talking about. Recently Christine noticed that every time i kept casting you, I picked the same collection of traits: driven, competitive, hardworking, committed, aspiring. All the qualities that make a star. Not that you need me to tell you that, because you already know you’re a star, which is something I have to admire.
You’re so secure, Mars –– or at least you come off that way, and that’s like a big thing to me, because self-confidence is something I do struggle with, but your absolute lack of fucks to give when it comes to having faith in your abilities to reach your goals and dreams is something that very much inspires me. I’m like tearing up writing this icb because I’m so proud of you. You’re so fabulous and strong and GAY, and I legit couldn’t be more proud of you, little badass <3
I’m so so so glad we’re friends, and I wish you all the best things in life. Have a wonderful Christmas and happy holidays bby. May you achieve great things in the new year.

The Carter Trilogy, part two of five
Lemonade: Ten times out of nine I know you’re lying, but nine times out of ten I know you’re trying
When I last reviewed a Beyonce album it was 2011s 4 (reviewed here ) , which I then lamented as unfocused, seemingly sequenced by committee, and utterly dependent on production as opposed to proper song-craft. I concluded then that the limping hodge-podge of an album was going to be Beyonce’s last okay album, and from there on it was going to be a calculated subsuming into a digital and anonymous cloak of modern production, leaving true emotion and song-craft parched, attritioned and abandoned with each subsequent release. Now, with the album 4 I believe I was proven correct, as the album has aged badly, and other than “Love On Top,” left no indelible mark on the pop landscape. But that conclusion on her future? Man listen, I was way off base.
Turns out this black woman from Houston, Texas got on her grind. She still is observant of all prominent trends in black culture and production, but over the last two albums and their accompanying visual films, Beyonce begun to establish the major themes of who she is and, thanks to directors like Jonas Ackerlund and Khalil Joseph and writer Warsen Shire, has concretely fused herself and her struggles into the larger narrative of black women in America.
And so Lemonade, her second best album, along with the emotional Lemonade(Film), present her as an American wife, defiant against the current rigors of her country, and a past that mutilates and morphs the men in her life. This well-crafted view of her though, is a fabrication, one that many stars have tried to present to the public. It feels digestible and true coming from Beyonce though, given that this album roll out was predicated on a very public (and very real) fight involving her sister Solange and her husband Jay Z.
What this gave the project was a narrative flow and imbued a sense of rage, disappointment or sorrow to the songs set. Those feelings were sometimes derived not from the song itself, but from the news details and gossip that filled in between the lines, or hovered over the whole album. But when the lights turn off and the band packs up, how well did the songs themselves transmit this idea of Beyonce?
Tumblr media
The guitar lays a base for the song in curt chucks, not scratchy and acerbic, but warm and echoed, like the lazy, beautiful guitar throughout Bob Marley and the Wailers “Stir it Up.” The bassline curls and growls around the verdant pylons of drum kicks like an affectionate panther, while Beyonce holds a call and response with a choral of Beys, skanking and in love in the middle of this kinky reggae of “All Night.”  “I’ve seen your scars and kissed your crime,” she says in a bold voice and melody, then later on she decides “give you some time to prove that I can trust you again,” before she relaxes into the joyous chorus.  Her voice here on the hook is clear and strong yet delicate and floating, like Misty Copeland’s legs, or Beres Hammond’s voice on 90s reggae classic “Come Back Home.”
The album gets more interesting and tender like this as it goes along, like with the anthemic thump of “Freedom (featuring Kendrick Lamar),” a song with positive messages of black consciousness and self-determination that gets its blood pumping from the engaging drums, bass, Kendrick’s dexterous flows and the grooving organ.
Similar sturm und drang is found on first half highlight “Hurt Yourself (featuring Jack White)” where the drums and organ synth are agitated and staccato, while the guitars rage on unrestrained like white water rapids. “Who the fuck do you think I is? I smell that fragrance on your Louis V boy,” she demands, the static filter on her voice heightening the tension in her marital threats, and accosting the song.
Elsewhere, “Forward” with James Blake is a moody interlude, the voices and atmospherics setting the tone for the fog of emotional stasis that follows a crisis in relationships and the tentative steps out of it.  It is mysterious and melodic, reminiscent of some of those dense songs on the first half of her best album, 2013s Beyonce.
These songs give true dimension to the album, and provide a strong enough thematic base for Lemonade to resolve itself with the Black pomp and majestic boom of lead single “Formation.”  That balance between strong lyrics and engaging music in service of those themes is not an easy one to get right on such a varied album, and the whole storyline of the tarnished marriage papers over its mis-steps at some points.
Tumblr media
Take “Sandcastles” for instance, a somber ballad with great piano and vocal harmonies throughout, while Beyonce reveals the fragility of love.  Ballads like these usually accomplish this theme with a delicate poetry, but here the lyrics are wanting, hiding behind the singer’s dramatic rendering, at points wrenching the words out her throat. And on “Sorry,” the buzzed-about insults and vulgarity obfuscate the hollow production, which even now already sounds dated.
“6 inch” finds Beyonce in her f- me pumps, the woman undone, with The Weeknd narrating this lost weekend of bacchanalia with usual surface-level observations.  A booming, strutting song built around an Isaac Hayes sample, the synth work around it though is a bit too overproduced and showy, and the words and the weak chorus don’t truly match the unwieldy production.  At points in the song, while her harmonies descend with the grand, arranged music like Cinderella at the ball, none of this matters, but, in the clear light of the day after, the drawbacks remain.
Tumblr media
Another factor that softens any drawbacks to the songs are their inclusion in her Lemonade(Film), released the same day as the album.  The images, directed by Khalil Joseph and Beyonce are arresting at points, dreamlike at others, emphasizing the connection between the Carter’s marriage and those of the Black community at large.
Here, the image of Beyonce drowning in a room feels like an image any anguished woman might describe to you, and the images of older women in their chairs, the dancers popping and locking to “Formation” all seem like permutations of the same woman finding her way through a yet-to-be-broken cycle.
Many images, film shots and techniques here accompany the songs well, but some feel too weighty and derivative, reminding me too much of the works of Terrance Malick, the illusive director of classics like 1979s Days of Heaven starring Richard Gere, 1998s The Thin Red Line, starring Sean Penn, and 2005s The New World, an exploration of the Pocohontas story.  Beyonce’s off-camera narration is very similar to the narration of The New World, down to her prayers to the moon and her dearest mother, shit even the font used for the chapter headings look the same. By the end, the film feels self-important, a spectacle of anguish, as opposed to an exploration of the self or the characters involved.
Tumblr media
And it is that self-exploration that usually led to the more nuanced lines and confessions in divorce albums of the past, while on a lot of Lemonade it’s either all invective or adoration.
On Marvin Gaye’s 1979 album Here My Dear, he tells his ex-wife on “Anna’s Song” “Annas here's your song, the one that i promised you all along/ I knew all the time that I’d find the rhyme/ Never have a fear, here it is my dear,” his voice a soft reveal, showing the tragedy of finally figuring out what to tell a woman when she’s on her way out the door.  And Lindsay Buckingham tells us on Fleetwood Mac’s “Never Going Back Again,” from Rumours, “she broke down and let me in/  made me see where I’ve been.” Shading in a portrait of a relationship with parts of oneself can lead to illuminating results, and this is seen in one of Beyonce’s best songs, “Love Drought.”
A slinky midnight love song that set up the conflicts and desires of this super-star marriage without being subsumed by the tabloid hurricane around them. “Ten times out of nine I know you’re lying, and nine times out of ten I know you’re trying,” she observes, resonant 808 booms and curling synth notes in the background.  The personal life of the singer provides some context, but the songwriting and melodies are strong enough to exist without it, telling a universal story of modern love.
“I always paid attention, been devoted, tell me, what did I do wrong?” she confidently pleads, the film curiously overlaying her words with scenes from a baptism, Beyonce among the apostles of women wading into a body of water, raising their hands, yearning to be cleansed anew by the same tormenting earth.

“Precious in His Sight” is a Story About the American Civil War and Its Residual After-Effects, on American Society – World News Report
Precious in His Sight                   E Pluribus Unum                             Why Marvin V. Blake’s “Precious in His Sight” tells of the myriad of historical-societal issues that occurred during and after, the end, of the American Civil War. Racial prejudice is not innate. I made a name list!
Okay, so, apparently it’s a bit of a trend now to share name lists in this community. I have a name list of my own that’s been getting longer and longer. I’m deciding to share it, because I love going over other people’s lists myself and I have found many cool names that way!
My list is very long, like, very long, so you can find it under the cut. I also put it on a page on my blog here ( you can find a link on my homepage as well) and in a pdf file here. There, the names also have colours to indicate whether they’re male, female or unisex names. That page will probably be updated as I find more names I like. Anyway, enjoy?

Why by Marvin V. Blake
"Why" by Marvin V. Blake tells the story of two sisters born into drastically different realities—one on a grand plantation, the other enslaved. Set in 1800s Virginia, they grapple with societal bounds and forge an unexpected bond under a progressive tutor's gaze. Faced with racial prejudice and nomadic freedom, they ultimately choose between family and a Comanche warrior.

Magic the Gathering, Brushing & Cuphead
It is time to grab a cup of tea (Earl Grey Hot for the Trekkies), strap in and get ready for another episode from the Nerds we all look forward to each week. Also grab a slice of birthday cake and help us wish the DJ a Happy Birthday, yep our favourite funny guy is another year older. Now on with the show; that’s right, we once again have another fun packed episode in which we entertain you with some of the latest topics in Nerd pop culture news. This week we start off with news of an animated series coming from Netflix of Magic the Gathering. While details are limited at the moment it is something to look forward to. The boys have some interesting points to consider with this one, and the chief among them is based on who determines what is canon for stories. Also what is possibly the coolest car commercial at the moment?
Next up we look at why brushing your teeth is more important than just to protect your teeth and good breathe. The implications for this are actually quite important, particularly if you want to remember where you hid your favourite comics and figurines. Once again Buck has found a research article that we should take a moment to look at that highlights some very interesting and disturbing facts. So, remember to brush, rinse and floss if you want to have the best health in the nursing home.
Next up Professor brings us news that Tesla is now becoming a rolling game console. That’s right, Tesla cars are gaming consoles with the release of another game to play on the in car tablet style interactive screen. Unfortunately you are not able to play them while driving, um, oops, maybe that’s a good thing. We also hear about what some people have been doing with their Teslas that has been noticed by Elon, and trust us, this is not something we recommend.
The games played this week show us that Buck truly is a grumpy old man, and that DJ is a fan of Clint Eastwood. But honestly tough, who isn’t a fan of Clit? What game is this, listen in or cheat and scroll down to the link. DJ has been playing Mortal Kombat 11 and still hasn’t exhibited any signs of PTSD, lots of other funny behaviour, but hey, that is normal. Professor has set fire to a house and read a book by the light. Then we have the shout outs, remembrances, birthdays, and events. Speaking of Birthdays, we wish to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to DJ. He is OLD folks!!! As always, stay safe, take care of each other and stay hydrated, catch you all next time.

4 Jun 1896 - At approximately 4:00 a.m. on June 4, 1896, in the shed behind his home on Bagley Avenue in Detroit, Henry Ford unveils the “Quadricycle,” the first automobile he ever designed or drove. On call at all hours to ensure that Detroit had electrical service 24 hours a day, Ford was able to use his flexible working schedule to experiment with his pet project—building a horseless carriage with a gasoline-powered engine. The Quadricycle had two driving speeds, no reverse, no brakes, rudimentary steering ability and a doorbell button as a horn, and it could reach about 20 miles per hour. Aside from one breakdown on Washington Boulevard due to a faulty spring, the drive was a success, and Ford was on his way to becoming one of the most formidable success stories in American business history. - https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/henry-ford-test-drives-his-quadricycle

Fantasy football rankings 2018: The top 150 players in PPR leagues
Tumblr media
Training camps have begun, which means you’ll soon be in the midst of your league’s fantasy football draft. If you are fortunate enough to have the No. 1 pick, this will be one of the harder years to figure out who you should draft first. Todd Gurley led all running backs in fantasy scoring among running backs in 2017, though that was his first and only year to finish in the top five in PPR scoring leagues.
Over the last two years, no player has impacted fantasy teams than Le’Veon Bell, especially when it comes to PPR. During that span, Bell has caught a ridiculous 160 passes, the most among any running back. Unsurprisingly, he’s been the highest-scoring non-quarterback player during that span.
If you get the top pick in a PPR league, Bell is your best bet, especially now that he’ll play under the franchise tag for potentially the final time, making 2018 effectively a contract year for him.
If you choose to go wide receiver in Round 1, you’ll have an interesting debate between DeAndre Hopkins and Antonio Brown. Hopkins is the reigning scoring champ among receivers, but dating back to 2013, no receiver has scored more points than Brown in PPR leagues.

Not doing well in school wasn’t an option and because of the hours the young girl spent studying rather than playing with children, her social skill development was placed on the back burner. No, these abilities would come later in life when at age fifteen, she learned how to sweet talk older men in local garages and repair shops where she’d get spare parts off of them. At sixteen she stopped trying to charm them and instead picked pockets and stole, not only spare parts but small knick-knacks whenever she worked up enough confidence.
The similarities between Murph and her father’s behavior was uncanny and once her mother began piecing two and two together, she had a confession to make. Her dad was in fact still alive and lived in a small town called Sheffield. Furious, Murph stormed out of her childhood home and began the search to find that deadbeat dad of hers. She wasn’t entirely sure what she wanted from him –– love, a chance at a relationship, an explanation, a face to punch. Whatever the reason, the teen got in contact with her grandparents who lent her enough to fund the trip to Sheffield.
A R R I V A L —  ( 1 9 9 2 )
The blond only had enough money to get to Sheffield, not to live in it. She quickly enrolled in high school and soon after, began living in the school building itself. The search to find her father was leading to a dead-end, though she was finding academic success in this small town and didn’t have any intentions of leaving anytime soon.

–– Murph was named after Murphy’s law which states: if anything can go wrong, it will. She likes to think of it more as “anything that can happen, will happen” due to the more positive connotation related to it than the former, though it was what her mother had in mind during her pregnancy. –– Her favorite class in school has always been math. She loved that no matter the language, it was always the same, and that the numbers could go on forever. She didn’t struggle to grasp with numbers that did not exist on the page, rather, exceeded with them. She was tested to be moved up a grade in school but scored too poorly in the reading and writing sections, so they decided to keep her with the grade she was supposed to be in. –– Her most prized possession is her Walkman TPS-L2, which she received as a gift for her sixteenth birthday. While one of the older models, Murph wouldn’t trade it for the world. She has a large cassette tape collection that comes with her pretty much everywhere, and her favorite tapes include Al Green’s Greatest Hits and Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On. v: We Are The Future
Meet the Muse
Tumblr media
Marvin Blake aka “Flicker”
Age: 16 Mother: unknown Father: unknown
Basic Bio -
Marvin never knew his parents, left at an orphanage as a very young child and brought to Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters nearly 8 years ago. He’s a high energy kid who’s managed to get on the good side of everyone whose path he’s crossed. He’s a fairly competent student but often struggles to retain control of his powers, hiding his concern behind a big grin and a pun or two. Due to a few unintentional incidents over the last few years, he’s not allowed to have a dorm-mate. For their own safety.
Mutation -
Marvin is able to generate, channel, conduct, and siphon electricity. He will often unknowingly draw small levels of electricity from any electrical appliances he comes into contact with. His hair is almost always sticking up due to static and electric shocks are common for those around him. He has issues with control and unless he manages to discharge any build-up that he acquires, they will continue to increase in strength until they damn near explode out of him. Though he can store electrical charge, he can only store so much and therefore is a better conductor than a battery.

Fantasy Basketball position tiers: Power forward values for 2017-18
Tumblr media
Kristaps Porzingis had an eventful offseason but is still a member of the Knicks and should be a fantasy force. (Photo by Issac Baldizon/NBAE via Getty Images)
Alex Rikleen, RotoWire Special to Yahoo Sports
Before we get into the 2017-18 power forward tiers, here are a few notes to keep in mind:
Overall, the tiers cover players projected to rank roughly among the top 120 overall. Within each tier, players are generally listed in the order in which they should be drafted. Of course, come draft night, team construction and roster constraints must be take into account.
[Now’s the time to sign up for Fantasy Basketball! Join for free]
Unless otherwise noted, players are listed only within the positions at which they are currently eligible in Yahoo Fantasy Basketball leagues. Tiers and season rankings are tailored to nine-category league settings.
Most players are ranked within the tiers at more than one position, rather than only their primary position, which is oftentimes arbitrary. Players who do not have multiple-position eligibility are denoted with an asterisk.
[Positional tiers: PGs | SGs | SFs | PFs | Cs]
Tier I: Possible No. 1 Overall Picks
Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bucks Kevin Durant, Warriors Anthony Davis, Pelicans
For the first year in a basketball generation, the top of fantasy drafts is wide open. No fewer than eight players are reasonable choices with the first overall pick. Antetokounmpo was a top-five player last year, in his 21-year-old season, and is eligible at power forward and small forward.
Durant and Davis have both been top-five players in each year except for their rookie seasons, and each has spent at least one season as the number one overall per-game fantasy producer.
Tier II: First Round Values
Nikola Jokic, Nuggets DeMarcus Cousins, Pelicans
While these two should not be selected inside the top eight, they provide clear first-round value, and are much closer to the tier above than the one below. In addition to near-nightly double-doubles, both provide unusual production for big men: Jokic averaged 5.8 assists per game after entering the starting lineup last season, while Cousins’ 2.1 threes per game as a Pelican ranked third among power forward or center-eligible players.
Tier III: Top-15 Upside
LeBron James, Cavaliers Kristaps Porzingis, Knicks Paul George, Thunder Draymond Green, Warriors Myles Turner, Pacers Kevin Love, Cavaliers Joel Embiid, 76ers
James and George have recently been top-15 players, but both are coming off of relatively down seasons, and new point guards might require an adjustment period.
Green has provided solid second-round production for three straight seasons, and the Warriors made no major changes this offseason. Porzingis and Turner are third year players who are barely old enough to drink, yet are already the foundation and identity of their franchises. Love is only 28-years-old, and finally seems comfortable in Cleveland. Keep in mind that he was a top-10 producer three of his last four years in Minnesota.
Based on upside alone, Embiid belongs a tier higher, but his injury history makes him a massive risk.
Tier IV: Multi-Category Staples
Al Horford, Celtics Otto Porter, Wizards Paul Millsap, Nuggets
This small tier consists of three quality, high-end starters. Their ceiling and their floor are pretty close – none are likely either to crack the top 30, or fall outside the top 50. These do-no-harm players should all see stable minutes as key pieces on playoff-caliber teams.
Tier V: High-Risk, High-Reward
Blake Griffin, Clippers Clint Capela, Rockets Andre Drummond, Pistons Harrison Barnes, Mavericks Carmelo Anthony, Knicks LaMarcus Aldridge, Spurs Jabari Parker, Bucks Danilo Gallinari, Clippers Tobias Harris, Pistons Dwight Howard, Hornets Robert Covington, 76ers Jae Crowder, Cavaliers Nikola Vucevic, Magic Rudy Gay, Spurs
Through the middle of the draft, managers will be have several opportunities to select a power forward who is highly risky in some ways, but also possess a realistic path into the top 40.
Griffin, Parker and Gallinari each carry injury concerns, and all three have missed at least 20 games in two of the last three seasons. If Griffin plays 70-plus games, he could easily leap up a tier or two.
Anthony and Aldridge are former fantasy elites who have declined more rapidly than expected, given their age. Harris and Barnes are both 25 years old and locked into high-minutes roles, yet neither has lived up to the optimistic outlooks their early careers inspired.
Tier VI: Boring But Steady
Gorgui Dieng, Timberwolves Nerlens Noel, Mavericks Serge Ibaka, Raptors Markieff Morris, Wizards
As the players with major upside dry up, managers should look to this tier for reliable production. None will stuff the box score on a nightly basis, but they all should have quality rankings at the end of the season. Dieng and Ibaka both finished last season inside the top 55. Morris and Noel both finished in the top 75 and are in better situations than they were last season.
Tier VII: Question Marks
Dirk Nowitzki, Mavericks Pau Gasol, Spurs Julius Randle, Lakers* Marvin Williams, Hornets
Will 22-year-old Randle take the next step in his development? His team should be better, and if Instagram is a reliable source, he’s already in much better shape. Nowitzki and Gasol are former All-Stars, but are among the oldest players in the league.
Randle carries an additional drawback – he’s one of only two players in this piece without eligibility at multiple positions. He’s a power forward only, and he’s not likely to add a second position mid-season.
Tier VIII: Steady Producers
Thad Young, Pacers Ben Simmons, 76ers Dario Saric, 76ers Willie Cauley-Stein, Kings Ryan Anderson, Rockets Derrick Favors, Jazz James Johnson, Heat Aaron Gordon, Magic
Saric is the only one who is not a clear starter, and he’d still be a high usage sixth man if Robert Covington beats him out for the fifth starting spot.
A few past rankings worth noting: Young was a top-40 player the last time he was on a lottery team. Favors was a top-30 player in 2015-16 but finished outside the top 150 in 2016-17. Cauley-Stein ranked inside the top-75 after Cousins was traded in February.
Simmons warrants extra consideration because of his positional eligibility. The 76ers have openly discussed utilizing him at point guard. If that ultimately happens, eligibility across three positions is fairly rare and would grant managers significantly increased roster flexibility.
Tier IX: High-Upside Young Players
Marquese Chriss, Suns* Frank Kaminsky, Hornets Richaun Holmes, 76ers
Late in the draft, managers should be looking for upside – after all, most of these players are likely to be waiver fodder after a few weeks. Within the sea of possible late-round roster fillers, these three stand out as young players who could develop into strong fantasy assets.
Tier X: Low-End Roster Filler
Ersan Ilyasova, Hawks Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Nets Greg Monroe, Bucks Skal Labissiere, Kings Zach Randolph, Kings Thon Maker, Bucks
The description pretty much says it all. These players will probably be dropped quickly but are at least worthy of an initial roster spot.
