Algy was resting quietly near the edge of the forest, preparing to set off in search of his way home, when a large post bird swept into sight, flew around and around over Algy's head, and then dropped a book at his feet before flying off to make its next delivery.
Slightly taken aback, for he had no idea that anyone knew where he was, Algy picked up the book and found that it was his very own children's book, The Magical Midwinter Star, which had just been reissued in paperback with a new cover design.
Algy was fond of this story, especially at this time of year, for it reminded him of his difficult and sometimes dangerous quest to bring light and joy back to the darkness in his very first northern winter, years ago… He recalled the song, sung by a choir of tiny mice, that he had heard on the edge of just such a forest as this one, and the beautiful, magical star he had seen at that time:
By the light of the Midwinter Star, All the creatures would come from afar: To the trees that were green When all others were bare, And they picked out the prettiest Tree that was there, By the light of that magical star. By the light of the Midwinter Star, All the creatures would come from afar: With soft wool and shells And bright things they had found, They dressed the green tree Where it stood in the ground, By the light of that magical star. They dressed up that tree Till it glittered so bright That the birds and the animals Sang with delight, Then they all danced around it Throughout the long night, As the star shone above them So sparkling and white. If you travelled the world Just as far as you might, You never could see A more marvellous sight Than the dance of the forest On Midwinter Night, By the light of that magical star.
His discovery of the strange shiny objects in a rock pool, and his search in the depths of the Highland winter for a suitable tree to hang them on, had been quite an adventure! And it had very nearly ended in disaster… but happily, all was well in the end 😀
So Algy was delighted that the full story was available in paperback again, for it meant that if any of his friends around the world would like to read the story – or give the book to a child (or adult still young at heart!) – they would now be able to do so…
In order to make the book available to Algy's friends in many different countries around the world, it was necessary to use Amazon, and Algy apologises to those who would prefer to buy books elsewhere.
The Magical Midwinter Star – and Algy's other two titles in his series of illustrated children's chapter books Tales from the Adventures of Algy – can be bought from Amazon in most countries, in both paperback and Kindle ebook formats.

Legend of the River King 64
JP release: 27th November 1998
PAL release: N/A
NA release: N/A
Developer: Pack-In-Video
Publisher: Victor Interactive
Original Name: Nushi Tsuri 64
N64 Magazine Score: 56%
Nushi Tsuri is a series of fishing RPGs that were released between 1990 and 2007. A few games have received western releases under the name Legend of the River King on the Game Boy and Game Boy Colour. Some of the later games were called River King in North America, but Harvest Fishing in Europe, to try and market it as a Harvest Moon spin-off (the mainline games of both franchises were made by Marvelous, but River King was first).
While the N64 version of Legend of the River King was marketed for a western release at some point, it ended up getting cancelled, so we’re left with a Japan-only game, which heavily relies on Japanese text. Google Lens is fine for rough translations, but is unfortunately not quite up to the task for specifics like translating fish names and other technical things like baits and lures. Still, I tried out what I could.
The game is presented as a top down 2D RPG and it looks lovely in motion, especially the water. Movement is surprisingly unrestrictive as it seems you can climb up any surface and swim through the water – there is one section where you’re blocked that’s part of a lengthy quest to reach the main objectives. The setting seems to be based on the British countryside (my girlfriend even commented on the look without seeing the red post box or football field), but with Japanese buildings.
The game stars a large family, and you get to choose which one to play as. While most of the game is the same for each, they have their own end goals. The girl I picked wanted to find a rare fish that uses a nest because it’s something her fiancé wanted to see. Along the way, you need to hone your skills by catching fish in order to get better equipment and win tournaments.
While the game is pretended in a cure and lovely 2D format, it changes completely once you get a bite on your rod. You are presented with a 3D view of the very nicely detailed fish. You need to use the analogue stick to make the fish think that the bait is real (it’s very difficult to figure out the tight motion) and use the a button to reel in. If the rod starts to strain, you’ll feel a rumble and you’ll need to let go until you see enough slack on the line to start reeling in again.
I found the fishing to be very difficult, even after reading tips online, and still struggled with the little indoor fishing that lets you fish as much as you want without using resources. You need to keep your eye on both your supplies and the quality of your rod.
Exploring the areas of the game (that I could access to – I never got the bridge repaired to access the blocked off areas), I did manage to find an old man that talked about the fish my character was after, as he laments that the species is now incredibly rare due to pollution. I did attempt to fish in this area on the off chance that I would find one, but I couldn’t even get bite, even trying lots of different bait.
I imagine that the information needed to figure out what kinds of rods, lures and baits you need to use in different locations is somewhere, but as Google isn’t great at translating those kinds of things, it’s lost on me, so this was kind of the end of my adventure. I did manage to catch a few fish, and you fill out an encyclopaedia with information – and you can make the model of the fish move its mouth by pressing A, so I had fun making it sing along to the tune of the music.
There is also more than just fishing. Wildlife will also attack you, either form you walking into them on the map or random encounters. Everything – seagulls, mice, eagles, cats, starfish – is out to get you, and you have three options: placate them with food, attack them or run away.
On top of catching fish, you also collect bugs and flowers. With bugs, you find them on the map and use your net to start the “battle” phase where you use a net or your bare hands to collect the bugs in a first person view. Cutting flowers is a bit more simple.
Legend of the River King seems like a nice and relaxing game, and it’s a shame that the language barrier makes it difficult to fully play and enjoy. I do really like this kind of RPG where the “combat” is something that isn’t a battle system, such as the handheld Mario Golf and Tennis games.
Even though I couldn’t get very far in the game, I enjoyed the time I spent with it.
It’s almost impossible to get a decent way into it if you’re not even slightly conversant in Japanese, such is the option-heavy nature of the text – but we did have a fair amount of fun once we discovered how to fish.
- Jes Bickham, N64 Magazine #26
Remake or remaster?
It would be nice to see an English translation of this game – and perhaps a Story of Seasons fishing game.

Captain America: Holocaust for Hire
Next up in my reviews of 1970s Marvel Comics prose novels, we have Captain America: Holocaust for Hire. This is #4 in the series (Iron Man was #6) and once again comes to us all the way from 1979. It's credited to Joseph Silva, apparently a pseudonym for an author named Ron Goulart. I have never heard of him, but he seems to have had a long career writing a large number tie-in novels under various pseudonyms.
Trigger warnings: Also, before I start, you may want to know that this book contains animal harm; specifically, a young woman breaking out of Hydra's captivity basically clubs a German Shepherd to death as she runs away. I, uh, wasn't really expecting that part.
Anyway! On the off-chance that you actually care what happens in the plot of this book, it's a thriller/action-adventure sort of story in which Captain America faces off against (of course) the Red Skull, in case you missed the part where the Red Skull's face is splashed all over the cover. The holocaust in the title is really more metaphorical, although at one point Steve is stuck in an incinerator, so, uh, that's a thing that happens. Hydra -- yes, of course, there are lot of Hydra machinations and people secretly working with Hydra and so on -- has kidnapped a scientist who has made a "seismic gun" that creates earthquakes and is forcing him to work for them out of threat of harm to his daughter. Naturally, Steve has to stop them.
But he's not alone in this quest! There's also a whole lot of Nick Fury and SHIELD action in this book, as Fury backs him up, and at one point Steve actually ends up rescuing Fury from Hydra. This isn't reflected in the back cover copy or anything, so I was a little surprised to find that Fury and SHIELD played such a big role, but as Steve on SHIELD missions is generally a big part of this era of Cap comics, it was nice to find that reflected here. Also, we get to see SHIELD's ESP machine. They have some weird technology.
(Also, in a... let's just call it a difference from how Marvel Comics likes to portray them today, Hydra is explicitly Nazi-aligned. Like, they repeatedly say that their goal is to bring about the Fourth Reich. This is sure not what Marvel is currently doing with Hydra, as far as I can tell from the last time I read Secret Empire.)
As for POV, this story is spread across a whole bunch of narrators, but for the most part it's Steve, Fury, a pair of (original-character) journalists independently investigating the weird seismic phenomena, and the daughter of the kidnapped scientist. Also we occasionally get the POV of random mobsters and Hydra goons who are getting their faces kicked in by Captain America, presumably because that way it's easier to see how stunning Steve is in action from the POV of the people he's beating up. The POV is actually pretty consistent here -- unlike the Iron Man book, which went for third person omniscient, this is a more familiar third limited, with the narrator changing every chapter. (They're very short chapters.)
I would have to say that the strength of the book is actually in the action scenes; technically, it's pretty well-written, and it manages to make the action (and there is a lot of it) fairly tense and exciting. I think this is where we really get the bulk of Steve's characterization, in the way he fights and his banter and so on. So it has that going for it. If you want some 70s comic action with Steve and Nick Fury teaming up to take down the Red Skull, this is the book for you. (Naturally, the Red Skull is ambiguously "dead" by the end, but, conveniently, no one ever sees the body.)
And now, the downsides! I have only read two of these novels so far but it's pretty obvious that the series is being written to some stringent editorial standards, because both of these books have been exceedingly formulaic in very particular ways. For example, there are a lot of what I can only assume are editorially-mandated flashbacks of origin stories. Toward the beginning of the book, Fury spends a lot of time reminiscing about the war and how Steve joined Project Rebirth -- oddly, the lead scientist here is named Jonah Erskine -- and became Captain America. Then slightly later, we get the Red Skull's origin story. And then, even later than that, we get Steve having a flashback about how it is the Red Skull managed to survive the war in some kind of suspended animation when everyone thought he was dead. Weirdly, what we don't get in any of these flashbacks is an explanation of how Steve -- or even Fury, but especially Steve -- ended up in the present day still in fighting condition. There's no mention of Steve getting frozen or being found by the Avengers. It seems like a really odd omission given how much the book clearly wants you to know that Steve is from World War II. If I had picked up this book knowing nothing about Captain America, I think I would be confused about that.
(During the origin flashback we learn that the serum has been tested "only on lab animals with gratifying results." Where are my super-mice, Marvel?)
The other weird thing is that there are multiple points in this book when people don't recognize Captain America. Now, I will grant that Steve is terrible at undercover work -- but this was Steve running around in his uniform and people had no idea who he was. And the first one, sure, okay, I will admit is probably there as a clumsy way to do infodumping; the Mafia guy whose POV we're in in Chapter 1 gets to yell "hey, who's that?" as Steve bursts in, swinging his shield, so someone else can explain that that is in fact Captain America. I see what they were doing. But there's also a bit where Steve is talking to a doctor and the doctor basically asks him if he's wearing that getup for a costume party and... it's Earth-616, dude. You'd think people would just know.
None of the narration is very close inside anyone's head, which is kind of disappointing to me, as I would have liked to know more about how Steve felt about the things that happen to him in this book. Even more distancing is the fact that I'm pretty sure the only time he's referred to as "Steve" (or "Steven") is in the origin-story flashback and the rest of the time he's "Captain America" or "Cap" even from his own POV. Which is a little weird. I guess I'm just really used to the way fanfiction wants to make you have all the feelings and this wanted to... really just tell a story.
There also aren't really any great characterization moments for Steve; I was hoping for, say, one of those big rallying Captain America speeches, the kind he occasionally does in the comics. The Iron Man book pretty much opened with that kind of speech from Tony and it was lovely and character-defining and I was sad not to get any of that here. I think I got more about Fury than I did about Steve. I think it's technically a better book than the Iron Man book in terms of the prose and plotting, but the Iron Man book had a lot more overall nice characterization moments.
So overall, I feel like the action scenes were very good and if you're here for Steve and Nick Fury fighting Hydra, that's what you're going to get, with this one. I was just hoping to feel more feelings than it made me feel. But it was fun!

Interview with Francesco Artibani
Monster Allergy Week, Day 7
Free-for-all
And here you have the second and last interview of the day, this time with our lord and saviour, Mr. Francesco Artibani. Thank you so much once again for your kindness and for this oportunity!
Again, huge thanks to @shikadora-momo for her incommensurable help!
If you want to read the original interview in Italian, click here.
If you want to read the interview in English, keep reading.
1. Let’s start with a small introduction. For better or worse, many fans came across Monster Allergy through the TV series and they might not know much about its original creators. Therefore, who is Francesco Artibani?
I’m a scriptwriter for comics and cartoons and I have been working in this field for many years, dedicating myself mostly to series for young audience. Monster Allergy is a series I have created along with Katja Centomo, while the graphic authors are Alessandro Barbucci and Barbara Canepa (it’s a four parents series). The adventures of Zick and Elena were born for the comic books and later on they became an animated series.
2. Aside from the one that brought us here, in which other projects can we find your signature?
I’m the author of the series Kylion for Disney Italy together with the designer Giulio De Vita, while in France I have created Il boia rosso (with Ivo Milazzo), Jimmy Jones (with Alessio Coppola) and Willy Wonder (with Silvio Camboni). Together with Lello Arena I have created the adventures of Scardaglione and Maruzzelli in the pages of Lupo Alberto (Alberto the Wolf). Monster Allergy is for sure my longest running series and the one which has given me more satisfactions (and keeps doing so…).
3. Has your work always been focused on the comic industry or have you worked in the animation field as well?
I have always divided my work between both fields. As for comics books, the list of projects is quite long but I’ll try and be concise: I write for the weekly publication Mickey Mouse since 1992 and, aside from hundreds of stories about mice and ducks, I have written the series PK, W.I.T.C.H and Kylion. Outside of Disney I have written tons of episodes for Alberto the Wolf, but in all this time I have also had the luck to take part in other projects, from Martin Mystére to Lys, from L’Omino Bufo to some series for the French market. In the animation field I have always written for Winx Club, but for Rainbow I have also scripted Tommy & Oscar, Pop Pixie and obviously the two seasons of Monster Allergy. Among other TV series scripted by me I remember Alberto the Wolf, The extraordinary adventures of Jules Verne, The adventures of Marco & Gina, Monsters and Pirates, Spike Team, Egyxos, Bu-Bum!.
4. How did you come to the conclusion that you wanted to devote your time to writing stories aimed –generally- at young audience? Do you have any advice for those who are dreaming of being able to do the same one day?
Actually I found out I loved writing while being a designer. I started working as an animator in a cartoon studio and working on the storyboards I got interested in scripting. Following this interest I gradually moved to writing until I fully abandoned my work as designer (published on Alberto the Wolf and Tiramolla - in the early 90’s, but not long after that I was already working as a full-time scriptwriter).
I don’t have any advices to give in particular; if you really have the passion and determination for this job the only thing left to do is to be prepared and study a lot, work a lot, because out there it’s full of talented people and this competition is merciless. For scriptwriters it is necessary to read a lot, to be informed, to be curious about everything - you have to be like sponges and absorb as much information as you can to transform it into new ideas.
5. Let’s talk a little bit about Monster Allergy now. ¿How and when was this story born?
It was born during a car trip with my wife, talking about projects and ideas that, as readers, we would have liked to find in a bookshop. We got excited about these characters and this bizarre world that started to take shape based on what we as readers would have liked to read.
6. How did you and Katja Centomo end up working with Alessandro Barbucci and Barbara Canepa in this project?
We knew each other already and we shared the idea with them.
7. Which were the first characters to come to life? It has come to our attention that there is a beautiful anecdote behind Elena’s peculiar name, is that true? Did anything similar happen with other characters as well?
Zick came first being the “engine” of the story.
Elena was named after our daughter who –at the time we created Monster Allergy– was still in Katja’s belly. And given that on her first ultrasound she looked like a potato, that’s how we found a nice last name for Zick’s friend.
As for the other characters, we followed our instinct and the inspiration of the moment, having tons of fun.
8. Where did you find the inspiration to create this fantastic world and, in particular, all the different species of monsters and the fun facts that we can find in the “Manuals”, gathered nowadays in the Monster Allergy Extra? Did they result from random ideas or is there an intention behind them?
There was a huge enthusiasm around Monster Allergy, it was a particularly happy and fun moment on the creative point of view. The rules of the world of monsters were born as a consequence of this spirit. For sure there was the will to give life to a small and coherent expanding universe.
9. This is something about which we fans have been theorizing a lot. Where does the story of Monster Allergy take place? Is it Italy, the USA or a little bit of both?
It’s a world of fantasy where things are all mixed up, a sort of AmEurope or something like that. For sure Zick and Elena will never go on a trip or holiday in a real city.
10. The first finale of this comic book, issue #29, was it the one you had in mind from the beginning or did you suddenly see yourselves forced to give an end to the story for some reason?
The editor decided to interrupt the series and notified us with little advance, so we had to give the series a finale against the clock. Certainly it wasn’t the end we wished for (in fact, we didn’t even have one in mind yet…) but we managed to make it as open as possible.
11. How and why did Monster Allergy come back after all these years?
We felt that, thanks to the TV series being aired over and over, the story had managed to gather a large and devoted audience, plus the readers of the comic books were still there. The biggest reason for Monster Allergy to return was our editor Tunué who believed in it and worked hard to bring the series back in bookshops, releasing a marvelous reprint and producing new stories.
12. Is there a reason in particular why you didn’t pick up the story where you left off and decided that time should have passed for the characters as well?
That seemed like an unusual idea for a comic - hence it was perfect for Monster Allergy. Usually in comic books characters never age, but we wanted to bring back our characters after they had grown up, just like the readers of once had grew up to become young adults. In their “evolved” version the characters have many more narrative opportunities to follow and this is a great thing.
13. Do you know yet how many issues will Monster Allergy Evolution have? Is there an specific reson why it is an annual publication?
We would like to carry on with at least one volume per year; producing a title like this is very time and money consuming, and all the authors of Monster Allergy are busy with other projects as well, so getting them all together for a new adventure is complicated. But we stay optimistic and hope that this hiatus between issues will decrease with time.
14. Do you know if there is any chance that the issues will be published in other countries aside from Italy and Germany in the near future?
Tunué is working to sell the rights in other nations. I believe that you will have news regarding this issue very soon, with the arrival of Monster Allergy to other European countries and across the Atlantic.
15. To finish with, do you have any message for the fans that are going to read this?
The message can’t be other than a huge thank you for all the affection you keep showing to Zick, Elena, Bombo and all the other protagonists of the series. We truly hope we can keep you company for a long time.

Happy birthday to the literary and martial arts master Joe R. Lansdale
Photo: Karen Lansdale
As probably the only person in the International Martial Arts Hall of Fame who has received an Edgar, ten Stokers, a Grandmaster of Horror, the British Fantasy, a Spur, and the Herodotus Awards, Joe R. Lansdale extraordinary output has included more than 40 novels, 400 shorter works, numerous comic books, and a handful of screenplays as well as devising the Shen Chuan Martial Science.
His novels include The Drive-in (1988), The Nightrunners (1987), COLD IN JULY (1989), the Edgar Award-winning The Bottoms (2000), A Fine Dark Line (2002), FLAMING ZEPPELINS (2010), The Thicket (2013), the Spur-Award-winning Paradise Sky (2015), and Bubba and the Cosmic Blood-Suckers (2017). Beginning with By Bizarre Hands (1989), Lansdale’s numerous short stories have been collected in several volumes including Writer of the Purple Rage (1994), High Cotton (2000), Sanctified and Chicken Fried (2009), THE BEST OF JOE R. LANSDALE (2010), DEADMAN’S ROAD (2010), DEADMAN’S CROSSING (2013), Bleeding Shadows (2013), Miracles Ain’t What They Use To Be (2016). and Terror is our Business (2018 with Kasey Lansdale). He’s edited 15 anthologies including Razored Saddles (1989 with Pat LoBrutto), Dark at Heart (1992 with Karen Lansdale), Weird Business (1995 with Richard Klaw), Retro Pulp Tales (2006), Cross Plains Universe (2006 with Scott Cupp), CRUCIFIED DREAMS (2011) and THE URBAN FANTASY ANTHOLOGY (2011 with Peter S. Beagle). As if this wasn’t enough, Lansdale has written comics for DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, IDW, and others.
Lansdale’s most famous creation is the unlikely duo of Hap and Leonard. Hap Collins is white, liberal, and even tempered. Leonard Pine, who is quick to anger, is black, conservative and gay. In a series of thirteen novels, beginning with Savage Season (1990), and several novellas and short stories, the best friends encounter violence, racism, and adventure in their East Texas haunts. The often humorous tales have garnered much praise and a legion of loyal fans. Many of the Hap and Leonard novellas and shorter tales were collected in Veil’s Visit (1999), HAP AND LEONARD (2016), THE BIG BOOK OF HAP AND LEONARD (2018) and the forthcoming OF MICE AND MINESTRONE. In 2017, Lansdale wrote HAP AND LEONARD: BLOOD AND LEMONADE which chronicled the young adventures of the duo, including the origins of their unique friendship. The most recent Hap and Leonard was The Elephant of Surprise (2019). For three seasons, the pair were featured on SUNDANCETV’s Hap and Leonard, starring James Purefoy and Michael K. Williams.
Other works that have enjoyed the film treatment include Bubba Ho-Tep, Cold in July, “Incident On and Off a Mountain Road,” “The Dump,” “Fish Night,” “The Companion,” and Christmas With the Dead, which Lansdale produced with a screenplay by his son, Keith. He has written many screenplays and teleplays, most notably for Batman: The Animated Series.
