I happen to be in LA for a few days, so I paid a quick visit to one of the most star-studded cemeteries, Westwood Village Memorial Park.
By the way, the sod over John Cassavetes' and Lady Rowlands' side-by-side graves was obviously different than the rest of the lawn, as if their plot had recently been opened and then re-covered. So I'm positive that Gena Rowlands is buried there next to her husband and her mother, even though there's no marker for her yet.

New York - May 2024
Just back from action-packed Frieze art week festivities in the Big Apple which featured stops at Future Fair, Nada New York and Frieze New York. The art fair spree dovetailed nicely with the launch of the major post-war, contemporary, and modern auction previews scheduled for later this month at Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips. The fairs and auction previews together served up fantastic art viewing opportunities for art fans and aficionados alike. And, as if that wasn’t enough given the mere 24 hours of viewing time on hand, serendipity delivered the icing on the cake with the timely opening of Tammi Campbell’s marvelous gallery exhibit of recent paintings and sculptures.
The Fairs
Frieze New York was the marquee fair, and it celebrated its 12th year as part of the cultural landscape in the city and its fourth outing at The Shed since relocating from Randall Island. The evolution of the fair since then has been considerable. From a corporate perspective, it is now part of famed Ari Emanuel’s sports and entertainment conglomerate, and, on the art front, the offering got slicker and more rarefied, featuring top-tier highly curated contemporary galleries and works. This year’s boutique-sized edition of 65 or so exhibitors included global mega galleries and international and local blue chippers. Standout works included: Nate Lowman’s “Golf Course Marilyn”, 2024, oil and alkyd on linen (50 x 30 in.); Uri Aran’s “Everything (Timeline)”, 2023, gesso, acrylic, oil, oil pastel, graphite, wood stain, clear polyurethane, charcoal, color pencil, china marker, and mixed media on canvas (87.25 x 42 x 1.5 in.); and, Richard Aldrich’s “Untitled”, 2022, oil and wax on panel (20.5 x 13.13 in.).
NADA New York has long been synonymous with contemporary and emerging art, and the fair continued to build on its reputation as being the go-to event for up-and-coming galleries. For this year’s edition, over 92 galleries, art spaces and non-profit organizations convened in the heart of Chelsea to showcase their stars, including, remarkably, 34 first time presenters. The show highlights included: a pair of works by Shaan Syed “Gorilla, Geurilla” and “To, Too, Two”, 2023, oil and paper collage on linen (35.3 x 31.5 in., each); Emma Schwartz’s “Thought You Should Know (again)”, 2024, oil, charcoal and chalk pastel on canvas (68 x 48 in.); and, Jule Korneffel’s “Alex’s Garden”, 2023, acrylic on canvas (82 x 80 in.).
Future Fair, on a relative basis, was the newest kid on the block, yet the four-year old upstart exuded a palpable vibe and excitement. With a focus on emerging galleries, the contemporary art fair featured over 100 artists from 26 countries, collaborating with over 60 local and international art dealers. Collectively creating a very accessible environment, the artists, works, and gallerists fostered a strong sense of engagement with fairgoers. Highlights included: Gwen Hardie’s assembled triptych “05.29.23”, pure venetian red and naples yellow on indian red, “09.15.23”, darkest cadmium red on indian red and “06.19.23”, lavender on warm umber (24 x 24 in., each); Beck Lowry’s “Red Threat (after Aseem)”, 2023, painted weaving on handmade wooden armature (plywood, crochet thread, oil paint) (12.5 x .75 x 1 in.); and Carolyn Case’s “Night Kitchen”, 2024, chalk pastel on pastel card with artist frame, ceramic porcelain and glaze (17 x 20 in.).
The Auction Previews
The previews for the prominent spring edition of the post-war, contemporary, and modern art auctions at Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips opened to the public and welcomed everyone from the most serious global big hitters gearing up to shell out whatever it takes to walk home with a masterwork to casual and ardent fans savoring the opportunity to look at phenomenal works before they again disappear into private collections. As always, the previews were masterfully staged in wonderful spaces. Supersized showstoppers included: Andy Warhol’s “Flowers”, 1964, acrylic, fluorescent paint and silkscreen ink on linen (82 x 82 in.); Frank Stella’s “Lettre sur les sourds et muets II”, 1974, synthetic polymer paint on canvas (140.88 x 140.88 in.); Felix Gonzalez-Torres’ “(Untitled) America #3”, 1992, 42 light bulbs, porcelain light sockets and electrical cord (length 504 in.); and, Rashid Johnson’s “Anxious Red Painting September 24th”, 2020, oil on linen (72.25 x 96.25 in.). Beyond the headliners, marvelous less conspicuous works were sprinkled throughout. Memorable ones included: Brice Marden’s “Small Parchment Study #1”, 1999, oil on natural vellum stretched over plywood; Henry Taylor’s “Cruel Kids”, 2005, acrylic on canvas (28.5 x 28 in.); and Agnes Martin’s “Earth II”, 1959, oil on canvas (71.33 x 48 in.).
Tammi Campbell Exhibit
In between fairs and auction previews, Tammi Campbell’s As Long As It Lasts exhibit kicked off and featured a walk through with the artist who provided fascinating insights into her practice and the specifics about works on view. With the continuous evolution of her creative re-engineering processes and next gen wrappings, Campbell continued to push appropriation to new heights, all while making the work uniquely her own. Highlights included: the Cy Twombly inspired “Untitled (1970)”, 2024, chalk on blackboard with walnut frame (48.75 x 59.25 x 1.4 in.); and a replica of a famous Andy Warhol work with a twist “Double Elvis (Ferus Type) with Bubble Wrap and Packing Tape”, 2024, acrylic on canvas (81.25 x 58.25 x 1.25 in.).
As spirited art week festivities unfolded across the city, local sportsfans were also whipped up into a frenzy as both their hometown Rangers and Knicks advanced to the second round of their respective playoff series. On the hoops front, with the Knicks now set to tip off against the Pacers, Dino fans can also partake in some playoff excitement (by extension) as former Raptor stars Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby, sporting Pacers and Knicks uniforms, respectively, are pitted against each other. The exuberance of “Crazy Eyes” versus the zen of “OG-Won Kenobe” - one of the two will get to the conference finals which should provide some solace and maybe even bring a smile to Dino nation.
For more information on any of the artists or works mentioned, the upcoming auctions, and the fate of former Dino stars, “Just Google It”.
There you have it sportsfans,

Airbus Readies Upgraded MRTT As U.S. Mulls Tanker Recapitalization
tanker refueling
Airbus is looking to build on its success selling the A330-based tanker to Australia and other countries with a new version using the A330neo airframe.
Credit: U.S. Air Force
Airbus is getting ready to launch a major upgrade of its A330 widebody-based military refueling aircraft that would give it more competitive firepower for a potential new round in the U.S. tanker war.
The European aircraft manufacturer could give the go-ahead before year-end to the A330neo-based Multirole Tanker Transport Plus (MRTT+) to replace its current A330-based tanker. The new version would be about 8% more fuel-efficient, extending its edge against its main competitor, Boeing’s KC-46A, Airbus officials say.
USAF secretary says “no final decision” on KC-135 replacement effort
New Airbus tanker could provide 2,160 nm range
Airbus’ MRTT+ could arrive just as the U.S. Air Force is looking for a new round of tankers to replace much of its KC-135 fleet, although the ultimate shape of that program remains uncertain. The service in March 2023 rolled out its KC-135 recapitalization project, which aims to field an upgraded tanker following the end in 2029 of the ongoing KC-46 program of record. The project involves purchasing 183 Boeing tankers, with options for five more, ahead of the planned arrival of the Next-Generation Aerial-Refueling System in 2040.
But Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall, speaking at the Farnborough International Airshow on July 22, said there’s “no final decision” on what the KC-135 recapitalization will look like and that the service will soon finalize a study on a future clean-sheet tanker. Funding remains an open question. The service earlier had said it expected to set an acquisition strategy this summer.
Kendall’s comments come as the Air Force finalizes its fiscal 2026 budget request, which will likely determine the plan’s future. Kendall and others have signaled that the budget will be tight for modernization, potentially putting the tanker plan in limbo.
Boeing and Airbus have submitted bids for the KC-135 replacement program. Airbus had teamed with Lockheed Martin for the effort, but the U.S. company pulled out last fall after the Air Force presented its requirements.
Supplying the service with tankers has been a particularly brutal battle between the two aircraft behemoths. Airbus initially won an Air Force tanker competition in 2008, teaming with Northrop Grumman. Boeing protested the decision, which was upheld by the Government Accountability Office, and then won the recompetition with the KC-46A, although it has since lost billions of dollars on the program.
Airbus expects demand for about 161 tankers through 2033, with about 42% in the U.S. The Asia-Pacific region, the Middle East and Europe are the next-largest markets, says Jean-Brice Dumont, head of air power at Airbus Defense and Space. “There is a significant market ahead of us.”
Airbus Defense and Space CEO Michael Schoellhorn says the MRTT+ should be particularly attractive to the U.S. Talks continue, but he notes: “There is currently no clear path as to whether or not there will be a competition. We stand available, but we also go after the rest of the world market.”
The company would not reveal its bid strategy, but Dumont says: “It is obvious you go to the U.S. with U.S. partners.”
Airbus expects to deliver its first A330neo-based aerial-refueling tankers before the end of the decade. The company is already undertaking risk reduction efforts to turn the A330-800, which features Trent 7000 engines and an enhanced wing, into a tanker. This phase aims to ensure that changes, such as to the wing and engine, do not upset the system’s functionality. That effort has provided “a high level of confidence” that the A330neo could be used as a tanker, says Maria Angeles Marti, head of tanker, transport and mission programs at Airbus Defense and Space.
Airbus says the MRTT+ will have greater range, but customers can also use the efficiency gains to increase refueling capacity. Boeing has countered that the KC-46’s smaller size makes it a better fit for many military bases.
Airbus is also working on other tanker upgrades, with an eye to improving the MRTTs already delivered. One key enhancement the company is introducing is automated refueling using the boom. Airbus has validated daytime operations with the Republic of Singapore Air Force. In recent weeks, Airbus had conducted tests involving more than 500 refueling contacts at night that should enable it to get certification for nighttime operations early next year, Marti says.
Airbus is exploring further automation that would enable the tanker to control the aircraft, crewed or uncrewed, during refueling. The company is also studying the ability to turn the tanker into a battlefield communications node and enhance its self-protection suite to improve survivability.
“We have customers interested, and we have customers in a hurry,” Dumont says of the MRTT+ upgrade program. The new tanker will be launched with a customer, he says, which would kick off a roughly four-year development program.
Robert Wall is Executive Editor for Defense and Space. Based in London, he directs a team of military and space journalists across the U.S., Europe and Asia-Pacific.

HIHIHI!!!
I’m in love with your saf AUs man… I will take any amount of rambling I can get pleasepleasepleaseplease 🥺
- 😇🪽
HI HI HI!!! Sorry it took me so long to get to this, I was actually stumped on what to talk about. And I know this isn't what you wanted but here it is nonetheless.
Here is why SaF fans should watch Sneakers (1992)
It's my favorite heist movie of all time
there's a lot of parallels to GoldenEye (the James Bond movie that SaF parodies) despite predating it by 3 years and therefore has a lot of moments that has me pointing at the screen like "!!!!! Spies are Forever reference!!!!"
it's funny as shit (aside from like one eughhhh moment during the first heist)
And also the main character is based as hell (learns from his ex-best friends mistakes and steals a shitload of money from the republican party and donates it all to various charities like the UNCF and Greenpeace)
The film actually brought on experts in the field of codebreaking and technology to make the actual hacking/heist parts of the movie as realistic as possible! (Aside from The Black Box but it's done in such a cool way that I can't be upset)
THE CINEMETOGRAPHY UGH OHHHH MY GOD THE MOVIE IS SOOO PRETTY
Doesn't infantilize the disabled character! Nor does the movie really pretend that his blindness gives him superpowers. (Like he doesn't have super hearing. He's just picking up on stuff that most people miss because they're not paying attention to what's being said)
James Earl Jones is in it.
The film follows a guy named Martin Bishop (formerly Martin Brice) and his team. They get hired by banks to break into their own places and to give a report on the weaknesses in security (based on a real profession!)
Martin gets blackmailed by the NSA to steal a 'little black box' from some mathematician. And realizes he is WAY in over his head once he realizes what it is. And that's just the first half of the movie! It delves into this really interesting mystery around the halfway point as everything we thought we knew becomes unraveled. And that's where the SaF parallels start to come in.
SPOILERS FOR SNEAKERS UNDER THE CUT
In the first scene of the movie, it's December of 1969. Martin and his friend Cosmo are in college pulling their idea of a prank.
That prank being hacking into numerous bank accounts-- including but not limited to the Republican Party and Richard Nixon's personal checking account -- and donating it to organizations like The Black Panthers.
They get hungry and Cosmo cheats his way out of having to go out into the cold to get pizza. So of course, Martin goes to get it.
But while he's out, the cops arrive and arrest Cosmo while Martin just barely manages to get away. Cos is later said to have died in prison.
YOU SEE THE CONNECTIONS ALREADY, RIGHT?
So right off the bat it's like. Okay, Cosmo is Owen and Martin is Curt. Right? And on the surface I'd say yeah. But also... it IS Cosmo's fault that he got caught. He rigged the little game they used to decide who has to run for pizza and because of that he got caught.
And that's sort of what's super interesting to me about Cosmo vs Owen and Martin vs Curt. Cos comes REALLY close to being Owen but misses the parallel by mere INCHES.
In the second half of the movie, as the conspiracy and mystery clicks into place, Cosmo is revealed to not only be alive but the orchestrator behind all of it. He, of course, wants to 'change the world' by using the black box to crash 'the whole damn system'. That being money, proof of ownership over property, etc.
And at first it comes off as another obnoxious 'oooooo scary leftist' trope. But looking at who Cosmo has become, it's clear that this idea is just something from his past that he desperately clings to in order to act like things haven't changed.
He wears expensive suits, has a james-bond-villain-esque office, runs an entire damn company as a front for his plans, AND has a side job of managing the mafia's finances. He carries himself like he enjoys this power.
Even the damn decoration in his otherwise bare office show this!! (sorry for the low quality screenshot)
AS IN HE'S LITERALLY A CUT OUT OF EVERY OTHER CORPORATE ASSHOLE NOW. HE IS THE SYSTEM HE CLAIMS TO WANT TO BREAK.
AND THATS WHY HE'S SO DIFFERENT FROM OWEN. And yet Cosmo is just as obsessed with 'winning' against Martin as Owen claims to be against Curt. Cosmo holds Martin at gunpoint, PLEADING with him not to leave again in a confrontation very reminiscent of the staircase scene. Cosmo is just as obsessed with the advancement of technology as Owen is and wants to harness it in the exact same way.
Meanwhile there's Curt vs Martin. Who could not be more different as protagonists in a SUPER interesting way. I guess a lot of the differences stem from the fact that Martin is ALSO a tech nerd and also the fact that its been decades since Cosmo 'died' in prison as opposed to a few years. And throughout the movie, Martin sort of insists the inciting incident was nothing more than a stupid prank.
But Martin learns from both his and Cosmo's mistakes. Unlike Curt.
Martin takes the black box and rather than destroying it immediately, uses it to do one last act of good in the world (bankrupting the Republican party and donating it all to charities) before presumably destroying it. Rather than giving it to the government like the story so desperately wants him to do.
Idk, Martin and Cosmo are such interesting mirrors of Curtwen that my brain just won't let them go. Maybe other people don't see the connection but I do.
ALSO ONE LAST PART: the cinematography. WOUGH.
JUST... THE WAY GREG LEANS INTO THE SHADOW WHILE HE'S TELLING MARTIN TO TRUST HIM ITS SUCH A SIMPLE THING BUT DRIVES ME UP THE WALL INSANE EVERY GODDAMN TIME
Also the fact that Martin is just casually friends with Greg, a Russian spy (especially JUST post-cold war), is incredibly funny to me.
ANYWAY THAT'S MY RAMBLING I HOPE YOU ENJOY!!
#docktor's note#answered ask#angel anon#sneakers 1992#long post#I'M SO SORRY THIS IS SO LONG OOHHHH MY GOD#if anyone actually reads this whole post oh my god ily#BUT PLEASE WATCH SNEAKERS FIRST#I also barely edited it so it might just sound flat-out insane
