Minden arany az enyém! – Gyilkos Kobold (1993)

Character Profile: MacSwain
Real Name: (none) MacSwain
Nickname and Meaning: None
Age: Unsure, but almost certainly over 21. Probably middle aged.
Gender: MacSwain is played by a man.
Family: Unsure.
MacSwain…:
Obeys the letter of the law. MacSwain works with Snyder to chase down Jack, Davey, and Les, (Newsies Film script, pages 23, 24, 25) and later tries to arrest Davey at the rally. (Newsies Film script, pages 89, 90) However, once he learns of Snyder’s abuses, he happily arrests him. (Newsies Film script, pages 132)
Doesn’t really like what he does. While he’s trying to arrest Davey, Medda yells at him, causing MacSwain to “duck his head shamefacedly” and reconsider his ideals. (Newsies Film script, page 90) Later, when he arrests Snyder, he makes sure Jack knows he’s safe from him, signaling a heel- face turn. (Newsies Film script, pages 132)
Is a man of few words. Although he appears in 4 scenes, he only has one line.
Headcanon Fuel:
Why did MacSwain become a cop?
What caused his heel- face turn?
Was it sudden, or was he thinking about changing his ways before Medda pointed out how unfair he was being?
Actors and Physical Appearance:
Shay Duffin
MacSwain is described as “a burly Irish cop” (Newsies Film script, page 23) He has sleepy eyes.

1823 Aug., Mon. 4
5 55/60
11 5/60
Very restless last night – Except for 10 minutes in the stable from 6 to 7 35/60 – John here at 6 – George not in the stable till 6 10/60 – Saw him wisp [whisper] dress Caradoc a full hour –
One of Samuel Webster’s sons a boy about ætatis 5, unfortunately drowned in the Redbrook about 4 p.m. yesterday. The bridge being widened with planks for George Robinson to lead his hay over (the upper Brook Ing) that he has bought of my uncle. A stake was driven into the middle of the water, “brash” rested there, and a strong current, and the child, supposed to have split off the side of the bridge, stuck fast, and was lost – They knew not how long he had been under water, but every means tried to restore life proved unavailing – Mr. Robinson the surgeon and apothecary was not at home, but his young man attended –
Came upstairs at 7 35/60 – Dressed wrote the above of today – Letter from M– [Mariana] (Lawton) 3 pages, the ends, and 1st page crossed – The 1st couple of pages dated Friday – Prevented by the Tryons who called and staid 3 hours – Respecting her health and the contents of my last letter, the following is all she replies, –
“my arm is almost well, only a little stiff, which a few days I hope will altogether remove – With regard to other things, I have never been absolutely quite well, tho’ the pain in my back has been removed – Anything that fidgets me, produces a little of the other concern, and I am far from being strong; but I am sanguine in my expectations of what the sea will do for me – It always used to give me health and spirits, and I hope it will not fail me in the present instance – I think I shall set off for Scarbro’ in about 3 weeks, perhaps a fortnight” ……
She will only be ten days in York –
“It seems Miss Maria Duffin is engaged to a Mr. Johnson a cousin of the Miss Cottinghams you have heard me speak of….. I am told he is an elegant young man, but in bad health, and no money to counterbalance the evil”...
M– [Mariana] says Mr. J– [Johnson]’s family fancy Mr. Duffin is unacquainted with the business therefore she was enjoined secrecy – Miss Pattison has “started a tendon in the right hand by holding an umbrella in riding, and in consequence has almost lost the use of her middle finger” The hand in a sling, ordered to make no use of it – She has recommended Franklin’s journey to the North pole – and M– [Mariana] says “Its worth even twelve hours of your time” – Lou going to stay a little at Newcastle – I wonder how she and Mrs. H[enry] S[teph] B[elcombe] will get on together –
Wrote all the above of today, read from page 332 to 349 Pharmacologia, and went down to breakfast at 9 40/60 – Sent the gig before breakfast to H–x [Halifax] to Blamire’s to have a new screw put on the top-part –
At 10 3/4 walked to Northgate – Went to Whitley’s got the last (no. [numero] 15) of the Retrospective review – Mrs. N– [Norcliffe]’s prints were just come when I called again on my return from the moor – Sat a little while with my father and Marian, and at 11 40/60 off in the gig to Aked’s road left a note from my aunt for Mrs. Veitch at Miss Swive’s – Gave it to Mrs. V– [Veitch] herself spoke to her at the door – Thence past Savile-hill, Savile green etc. to church lane and the moor –
A long piece of work with Caradoc at the bottom of Shay-lane – He turned up, and I could not get him to turn to the left down again, turned him round to the right, but he will not obey the near rim, and George was obliged to lead him round – Took a turn or 2 in green royde lane – Brought him to the place again twice, but George was still obliged to lead him round, nor could I (had not time to spare) make him turn to the left on the moor –
Ordered a pair of new rims at Furnish’s and called again at Whitley’s – I must write to Mrs. N– [Norcliffe] about the prints – Got home at 1 40/60 – John in readiness saw him wisp [whisper] Caradoc 1/2 hour, and doing his feet etc. and feeding took 1/4 hour longer –
Came upstairs at 2 35/60 – Wrote the last 11 lines – Gave John my old black cloth mantle with a pocket in it that I used to go to Mr. Knight in from Northbridge – Wrote a 1/2 sheet full, and the one page and ends of a 1/2 sheet envelope to Mrs. N– [Norcliffe] and then 4 pages and the one page of a 1/2 sheet envelope to Miss Marsh, meaning to go to Haugh end tomorrow and got Sir John Astley to frank my letters –
Nothing – Nothing particular in them – Asked Mrs. N– [Norcliffe] some questions about her Shakespeare prints – She has only sent 91; Whitley thinks there are 101 in the complete set – Shall be happy to be with the N– [Norcliffe]’s in Petergate during the festival etc. – Told Miss M– [Marsh] I had asked Mrs. N– [Norcliffe] for a bed on hearing she (Miss M– [Marsh]) would have her brother with her and as the Duffins’ house would be full she might wish to give 1/2 her bed to Miss Maria D– [Duffin].
Went down to dinner at 6 – Came upstairs again at 8 10/60, and from then to 10 wrote 3 pages to M– [Mariana] for Sir J[ohn] Astley to frank – At 10 went down stairs for 10 minutes Barometer 3 degrees below changeable Fahrenheit 56º and came up again to bed at 10 10/60 – Curled by Cordingley. E [three dots, treating venereal complaint] O [three dots, signifying much discharge] –
Very rainy morning till between 9 and 10 – Then a little fairer – and tolerable the rest of the day – Opened a little hay out in the afternoon – More rain in the evening –

LEPRECHAUN (1993)
Returning from Ireland to his North Dakota home, Dan O'Grady (Shay Duffin) claims he's captured a leprechaun and taken his pot of gold for his own. Though his wife (Pamela Mant) dismisses him, the leprechaun manages to escape, killing her and demanding his gold back from O'Grady. O'Grady manages to capture the leprechaun again, this time sealing him in crate using a four leaf clover, but the leprechaun induces a stroke, stopping him before he can burn the creature to death. Ten years later, J.D. (John Sanderford) and his daughter Tory (Jennifer Aniston) move into O'Grady's home, encountering a trio of painters helping get the place in shape. The Leprechaun is released from his slumber once again and immediately goes on the hunt for his gold, which has been discovered by Alex (Robert Hy Gorman) and Ozzie (Mark Holton). The Leprechaun attacks the group, killing others who get in his way, until they discover his one weakness: Four leaf clovers. Arming one in his slingshot, Alex shoots a clover directly down the Leprechaun's throat, killing the Irish beast once and for all.
The first movie from Trimark Pictures to be theatrically released, Leprechaun brought to us one of the genre's most iconic characters... and also one of its goofiest. Right up there with Jack Frost and Turkie, the Leprechaun is a humorous monster whose amusing aspects far outweigh any fear he could potentially generate. The story by Mark Jones is serviceable enough - An ancient evil is awakened by our unsuspecting heroes, who must then undo what they’ve done - but it suffers from one major flaw: While an admittedly dangerous threat, the Leprechaun never feels scary at any point. This can't even be blamed on his size, as he's larger than Chucky, who felt very much like a legitimate, scary threat throughout Child's Play. The Leprechaun is simply never presented in even a semi serious manner, as there are plenty of scenes with Davis simply running around in full view of the camera, often times with the footage sped up for even further comedic effect. As such, the Leprechaun is entertaining to watch (Warwick Davis is clearly having a blast with the role, and was in fact responsible for most of the character's humor), but at no point does he ever feel like a scary movie monster.
Only further fueling this problem is that there are no definable rules to the Leprechaun; His powers, behavior, and weaknesses are all seemingly made up on the fly. He possesses the power to do whatever the plot requires of him - Firing magic from his hands, teleportation, imitating people's voices, ripping people's organs out for use in his own body... He can essentially do anything. Though it’s understandable that the Leprechaun would have so many magical powers, considering physical confrontation is not his forte. Each time the Leprechaun attempts to attack the heroes, they easily fend him off and beat him down with their fists, guns, and whatever else they have handy. It's nice at first, seeing the heroes not be helpless against the monster for a change, but soon every scene devolves into a little person smack down, which ranges from hilarious to tiring to watch after the umpteenth time. Then there are "the rules" mentioned earlier in the film (that are quickly forgotten about). O'Grady says he "caught" the Leprechaun and "forced" him to hand over his pot of gold, but this in no way lines up with the monster we see during the rest of the film. The Leprechaun we see in this movie would have laughed in the face of anyone who asked for his gold and then would have killed them for doing so.
The human characters are either obnoxious or forgettable. Of course, this movie is best known for its main actress, at it was the feature film debut of future Friends star Jennifer Aniston. Unfortunately, her character Tory is the clichéd fish out of water city girl who complains about every little aspect of life in the country, and she never evolves beyond this. She begins bitching the moment she appears on screen and doesn't stop, she just happens to redirect her complaining towards the Leprechaun and even Ozzie, who seems to be the only one who knows what he’s talking about half the time. Ken Olandt as our 'hero' Nathan is rather bland, not really accomplishing much at any point in the movie other than getting his leg caught in a bear trap. Mark Holton is alright as Ozzie, Nathan's mentally challenged assistant/partner who still believes in magic, fantasy, mythology, and the like. While nothing special, Ozzie is probably the most likeable character of the bunch simply by being the only one who's not a total jackass. Nathan and Ozzie's child partner Alex, played by Robert Gorman, does not fare as well, however. Alex is the "obnoxious child who thinks he's smarter than everyone else because he's rude and cynical" type, which can be amusing if written well, which unfortunately, Alex is not. All he does is spend the entire film yelling at and scolding and mocking Ozzie, even when it's uncalled for, making him an even more unlikable character than Tory. It’s almost made up for when Alex is given the best line of the film at the end, but not quite. Also, it’s never explained how Nathan, Ozzie, and Alex are all in business together. Are they friends? Siblings? Are they the bosses or do they work for someone else? It’s never said. John Sanderford as Tory's dad isn't even around long enough to leave an impression. He's bitten by the Leprechaun in the first act and is written out for the rest of the film, not even showing back up at the very end once the day is saved.
Despite the total lack of scares in this film, the Leprechaun and his over the top comedy-horror struck a chord with audiences. Warwick Davis would return as the diminutive demon five more times, taking the Irish evil from da' hood to the depths of space.

LEPRECHAUN Celebrates 25 Years of Pint-Sized Terror
New Post has been published on https://nofspodcast.com/38843-2/
LEPRECHAUN Celebrates 25 Years of Pint-Sized Terror
It is hard to believe, but Leprechaun is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. With a poster declaring “your luck just ran out”, the film was released theatrically on January 8, 1993. Leprechaun introduced a new, titular horror villain played by Warwick Davis and launched a horror franchise that went on to become a video store staple throughout the 1990s.
At first glance, Leprechaun comes across as pretty standard b-horror slasher fare with a supernatural angle, but, you have to admit, there is something undeniably fun and enduring about the silly premise presented here.
Synopsis:
Dan O’Grady (Shay Duffin) steals 100 gold coins from a leprechaun (Warwick Davis) while on vacation in Ireland. The leprechaun follows him home, but Dan locks the murderous midget in a crate, held at bay by a four-leaf clover. Ten years later, J.D. Redding (John Sanderford) and his daughter, Tory (Jennifer Aniston), rent O’Grady’s property for the summer. When their new neighbors accidentally release the leprechaun, he goes on a murderous rampage to reclaim his gold.
Leprechaun was written and directed by Mark Jones and stars Warwick Davis (Harry Potter and Star Wars), Ken Olandt (1986’s April Fool’s Day), Robert Hy Gorman (Sometimes They Come Back and Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead), Mark Holton (1985’s Teen Wolf and Madhouse), and features Jennifer Aniston (Horrible Bosses and TVs Friends) in her big screen debut just before she went on to find super-stardom. The film was the first to be produced in-house by Trimark Pictures and released theatrically. Reportedly, Jones’s original idea for the film was to have a much darker tone, but franchise star Warwick Davis had the idea to add a big dose of humor to the story. Jones liked the suggestion, and the tone of the film was shifted from one of straight horror to a horror comedy.
Honestly, it’s hard to say if Leprechaun is an all around true success or not. Yes, I find the film funny and entertaining. I have watched it numerous times over the years, but, even now, there are aspects of Leprechaun that I’m not entirely sure are genuinely played for laughs or if the scenes fall somewhere in the “so bad it’s good/funny/whatever” category of b-horror. The fact of the matter is that what we are dealing with here is a murderous leprechaun who rattles off rhyming one-liners before killing his victims in various gory and gruesome ways. These are the things the franchise has come to be known for. It is what the fans want to see. Truthfully, if you’re not down for the ridiculousness of it all, Leprechaun is simply not for you. Personally, I’m all in.
Upon its release, Leprechaun was met with overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics. The film currently has a 23% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, despite the poor critical reception, Leprechaun turned a big profit for Trimark. The reported budget for the film was just under $1 million, and it went on to gross nearly $9 million at the box office.
Not surprisingly, due to its financial success, a string of sequels soon followed. To date, the Leprechaun franchise has turned out five sequels and a remake/reboot. Like its predecessor, Leprechaun 2 was released theatrically, in 1994. This time, however, the profit wasn’t as big. The rest of the series went direct to video and DVD. The 1990s was a time where horror video rentals was thriving, and it is reported that Leprechaun 3 was the highest selling direct-to-video movie of 1995.
Interestingly, the director of Leprechaun, Mark Jones, made a similarly themed small creature horror title that was released that same year, Rumpelstiltskin.
Synopsis:
A young widow’s wish to see her policeman husband one last time frees a demonic being that wants her infant son’s soul.
I don’t want to go off on a HUGE tangent about another horror movie in this article, but I am a fan of Rumpelstiltskin as well. Admittedly, I am a sucker for campy creature features and films that are colorfully lit with a palette that starts with the poster art and follows through the finished film. Whereas the Leprechaun production is, at times, lit in yellow, blue, and green, Rumpelstiltskin is often presented in purple and blue. Just look at this…
Sadly, Rumpelstiltskin was not able to find the same amount of success as Leprechaun.
Through a series of sequels that has taken him to Las Vegas, space, and The Hood, Warwick Davis’s Leprechaun character has stood the test of time, and, I would say, is as recognizable as the big-time horror villains of Freddy, Jason, Chucky, Pinhead, Michael, and Leatherface.
In a 2014 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Warwick Davis said of the character and film:
I don’t think for a minute we, as filmmakers, pretend they’re anything else other than entertaining popcorn movies,” he says. “I would suggest people sit down with a can of beer, put their brain in the fridge, and watch the film. You don’t need to think about it; you just need to enjoy it. I get tweets daily and they refer to Leprechaun. It’s amazing. The Leprechaun films are cheesy, they’re low-budget, but they have a serious following. They watch marathons on St. Patrick’s Day.
You can read the full Entertainment Weekly article here. It is an interesting read that chronicles the Leprechaun series all the way from how the original idea came from a Lucky Charms cereal box up to the 2014 reboot and even hints at a possible return of the character in a slightly different form: a vamprechaun. Yes, a vampire and leprechaun hybrid.
Like many of the horror franchises that have hit it big over the years, there has been a wide array of merchandise associated with the Leprechaun series including action figures, masks, costumes, comic boks, and t-shirts, just to name a few. Now, Leprechaun has become a St. Patrick’s Day tradition. The film and the series are shown annually around the holiday.
Are you a fan of Leprechaun and its line of sequels? Let us know what you think in the comments below, and be sure to check out the attached trailers for Leprechaun parts 1-6!
