Sarah Bradley walking down the hallway to Vice Principal Sheldon Lee’s office. Sarah knocks on the door.
“Come in,”
Sarah opens the door to see Sheldon Lee, sitting at his desk with a technologically advanced gadget next to him.
“Good afternoon Sarah,” said Sheldon. “How are you and your team doing on the case?”
Sarah explains to Sheldon that the team is split into two groups. Sarah, Bastille, and Marquise’s trip to the bookstore, (dedicated to the supernatural), to do research on vampires to sent informations for him. All while Auggie and Stella are currently investigating by checking out the crime scenes because Auggie is a skilled necromancer and knowledgeable in vampires. Same goes to Stella with knowledge on supernatural and her combat experiences against monsters.
“I already contacted you that my team and I found out that that fairies have the ability to track down a vampire. Which is already why you know that we would like to request a fairy, a senior like us to help us on the case.”
Sheldon Lee nod. “Yes, Sarah and you also recommend Precious and Soarin. Although they are in their own hero team, so it may upset their routine. That is why I came prepared,”
While he understands that the team desperate need of a fairy for their own investigation, there need to be drastic measures to be taken because of the disappearance of fairies in the City of Townsville by the hands of the mysterious entity, The Shadownapper. They have already lost one student. They cannot lose another student, worst of all, two students! He wonders if Stella could bless them divine protection under her watch since she is a demi-goddess, though for how long?
Sheldon hands Sarah the device, which activate a holographic list of the students with images. “I did have a list of other fairy students who would be up for the task, and would love to be apart of the team.”
Sarah looks at the list carefully. Her eyes still retain the image of her two friends.
Precious: A day fairy hybrid whose has fair skin, blond-and-sky blue ombr hair that went down to her hip, and butterfly shaped sky blue coloured wings.
Soarin: A day fairy hybrid as well whose colour scheme is the sunrise.
“However, are you sure that you want one of them to help you?”
Sarah continues looking at the image of her and Ashanti’s friends, the ones who have faith in them to become a heroes together. ‘A killer duo’ that Precious called them.
Sarah nods. “They have faith in me, and I have faith in them.”
Sheldon hums, admiring Sarah’s confidence. It is one of the reasons why she is made a leader. Though having only trust can have its downfall.
“Very well, Sarah. I will let you ask them to help you. I have one question that talks about faith. Can you answers me honestly?”
Sarah nods. Preparing to answer whatever question the vice-principal has in store for her.
“Why wasn’t Ashanti participating in this mission?”
The air is now tense. Sarah flinched when she said this. She cleared her throat. “About Ashanti. That is another reason why I am here Mr. Lee………,”
Sarah plays with her fingers. Sarah takes a couple of deep breathes to proceed. Sarah told Sheldon about Ashanti’s absent and why she never contact her, except for the team-building workshop. Sheldon raises an eyebrow, as he learns about Ashanti's habit of absenteeism. This is disappointing because personal matters shouldn't be interfering with professional career, especially a career of a hero.
“I only did this to give her space because she is still grieving for the loss of our friend, Marcy. Plus, she is going through personal and family problems. I believed that this was fine, hopefully she will come back and be a part of the team... But I was only lying to myself."
The second generation human super soldier/metahuman hybrid wonders why she is telling her feeling to the vice-principal, instead of Headmistress Blossom? Does she believe that deep down the headmistress has favoured Liberty League over their team, even though Ashanti and Auggie, her niece and step-nephew are on her team.
“Even though that we are friends, I am unsure if I want Ashanti to be a part of the team from now on,” said Sarah. “I do not have beef with her. Her absence has become a constant absence as it continue on. That is a problem in my team is having. And I let it slide! If this continues it will become major. I holds myself responsible for this.” Said Sarah. Maybe it is because she does not want to say anything mean to Ashanti to her aunt. Plus, her aunt has many connections to heroes and famous people around the world and space.
“I see, thanks you for telling me about this. I will let Ashanti know, is that all?”
Ashanti is still not going over the loss of Marcy. She does not need this. However Sarah misses Marcy too. She is the glue in their friendship, their mediator. She is not like their other friends, Soarin and Precious either. She is not a fairy. Why is she more human than them? It is suck, when you are placed with a bunch of talented people that would overcome her. Her lips start trembling. Sheldon notices Sarah’s vulnerability is showing. Sheldon frowns seeing that Sarah has reach her limit. Sarah have grow so much throughout her years at Phoenix Academy, she is still young. She has so much to learn. When it comes to giving others a second and third chances, boundaries must be establish. When someone has to cross the line.
“Sarah, are you okay? We can end the meeting if you are not feeling well.”
Their friendship is already broken anyway.
“……………..No, I want to continue,” said Sarah. “I just can’t do this anymore! I gave her space! I try talking to her about this situation. She keeps saying that she does not have any time and wants to do this the next day only to get another rain check. I lost my trust and hope in her now. Honestly feels like my friendship with her never exists." Sarah opened up to Sheldon. She is spiralling out of the place as she continued speaking to him. "I try to make this work. For you and everyone. What she did is very disrespectful. And it is all my fault!”
Sarah placed her hands on her face. She started sobbing. Her heart squeezed. Heartbroken that her friend let her down many times and by keeping things for her. All because she chose their friendship over family.
Sheldon got out of his seat to give the future Captain America a hug.
~~
An hour later, Sheldon Lee has dismiss Sarah, after she calmed herself down an hour later. She was emotionally drained and deserves to go home to take a day off tomorrow because her emotional breakdown. Plus, she did her effort to ensure that the team did not fall apart, including the second-in-command too. He lets out a tired sigh, knowing that his discussion with Ashanti, means that Headmistress Blossom will be a part of this.
Sheldon Lee knows that this is not the time. Right now, he need press the intercom button.
“Excuse me for the interruption classes, but will Precious and Soarin please come to the vice-principal office. Precious and Soarin.”
The two day fairy hybrids look at each others as they heard their name calls out. They got up to their seat to leave the classroom and go to the vice-prinicipal’s office.
Soarin and Precious sat down to have a seat on a chair provide for each of them. As they are in their seats, they feel stressed, sadness, and anger lingering in the room. Both figures out whose emotions belonged to. They internally frown after they picked up the emotions.
"Let's get down to business, I have assigned Group 2 for an investigation on an odd string of gruesome murders," Sheldon informed to the students. "They found out that the cause of murders are tied to the increase population of feral vampires."
Soarin and Precious are speechless to learn of this news about the mission that their friends, Sarah and Ashanti are assigned to. They didn't expect that they will be helping their friends out so soon. This could be a factor to the lingering emotions of Sarah's.
"Soarin and Precious, with your ability to sense a person or creature's emotional state from a variety of distances, would you two like to come round tomorrow in assisting Group 2 in tracking down the feral vampires and capture them together so they can be on trial?" Sheldon politely request to the superheroes.
The two fairies look at each others, a few minutes have passed and they look at Sheldon with their mind is set.
"Absolutely," Precious answered.
"We don't want to let our friends down," Soarin announced with determination on his face.
"Excellent," said a relieved Sheldon, wearing a gentle smile that shows his crow's feet. "Thanks you. Sadly however Sarah won't be there because she will start on her mandatory mental break for tomorrow. So her second-in-command, Stella will be leading the team. You two are now dismissed for the preparation for the team-up."
"Okay," said the two day fairy hybrid superheroes, taking their leave. Though on their way of leaving, they begin to worry about what is going on between their friends, Sarah and Ashanti.

While some wondered if Taylor would appear at any NYFW shows this week, a sporty outing to watch a fellow American Taylor (Fritz) in the US Open final is just as fun. And such great symmetry! The gingham print of this dress is sweet and breezy. It calls to mind picnics on the grass, apple pies, and Americana. In other words, a wholesome and summery piece to wear when supporting an American athlete. Love!
The brand is also a longtime Taylor staple. She’s been wearing Reformation pieces since 2012!
Taylor has been on a bit of a Louis V kick as of late, adding these monogrammed earrings to her latest run of pieces that have included two bags and a pair of boots.
Among Taylor’s style pillars include the art of the high/low (mixing high end designer pieces with more approachably priced items) and indie designers. To my eye, it looks like Taylor has added a new eyewear brand to her collection - the humourously named Crap Eyewear which are founded and designed in Los Angeles, CA.
Taylor’s jewelry was, once again, a lot of repeats. Pieces that she’s worn and loved and had in her jewelry box for awhile. Both bracelets seemingly haven’t left her wrists since she wore them to the Chiefs vs Ravens game last week. The #Tiffany ring was an addition she wore on the Eras Tour stage during the first round of dates in London. The #Foundrae crest necklace was worn back in January of this year. Set into a crest, this collection for Foundrae is a celebration of love in all its forms including romantic, platonic, and self. Taylor’s discography, of course, famously “a love letter to love itself” which makes this a perfect piece for her.
The Retrouvai pieces are also familiar. The ‘Magna’ ring Taylor wore to the Super Bowl earlier this year. The heart ring you might recognize as from the “I Bet You Think About Me” music video which Taylor’s friend Blake Lively directed. This ring also just so happens to be Blake’s. It was a bespoke commission as part of the brand’s Heirloom collection and comprises an 8-carat heart shaped rubellite set off with a halo of 2.5-carat diamonds. Designer Kirsty Stone described Blake as a “true jewelry lover” and the “incredible” opportunity it was to design something for “her personal collection.”
For a coordinating pop of red against her gingham check dress. This was a cute pairing! You might also recognize this bag from the London candids in June.

Failed proposal
Azriel x f!Reader
Masterlist.
Summary; Azriel finally gathers the courage to propose, but what happens when the ring gets mixed with the earrings Cassian got for Nesta?
I was inspired by the movie "something from Tiffany's"
Warnings; a bit of angst and swearing. Mentions of violence.
Winter solstice was coming and everyone was rushing around trying to find the perfect gift for their loved ones. You, Feyre, and Nesta had already shopped for gifts and hid them around the house so the males wouldn’t find them. They were way too impatient and you knew that the moment they would spot a present they would open it to see what it is. Even your mate Azriel who seemed strict and a sucker for rules would cave.
You and Azriel met 50 years ago and the bond snapped instantly, you spent the next years going out on dates and taking things slow and about 20 years ago you moved in the house of wind and accepted the bond. You didn’t have a ceremony so you recently discussed about getting married, he seemed nervous and wrapped the conversation quite abruptly making you wonder if he really wanted this. You couldn’t understand what was holding him back, you had accepted the bond so getting married was actually something meant to happen. Your insecurities resurfaced and the jealousy consumed you as you thought about the time he spent with Elain in order to help her adjust, but after overhearing that he had a big plan for this winter solstice, you decided to wait until then to confront him. The girls were all convinced that he will give you the ring you yearned for and you couldn’t hide your excitement.
Azriel
“I don’t know Rhys… none of the rings feels right” Azriel said as they walked around in the store.
“What about this one?” Rhys exclaimed and held a ring in Azriel’s face. The shadowsinger took a step back and examined the ring, it was indeed a beautiful gold ring with a blue marquise cut stone the same shade as his siphons. Azriel took the ring from Rhysand’s hand and moved it to the light, it was just as shiny as your eyes, he thought and smiled.
“Okay I’ll take this” he informed the salesman and followed him to the register. After the ring was packed he took the bag and hurried off hoping to get home before you so he could hide it.
He entered the library and removed one stone from the wall leaving the present inside and placing the stone back into place. He was in such a hurry that he didn’t notice the same bag that Cassian had hidden there too.
Winter solstice.
Azriel’s behavior was completely odd the past days and this morning he jumped off the bed like you burned him. You were really confused but also excited because these were telltale signs of an upcoming proposal -or at least that’s what the girls had been telling you.
The night came rather quickly and you all gathered in the main room of the house of wind with all the presents.
Feyre gave Rhysand a painting of Nyx and him flying around, then she gave Cassian a book about war strategies. For Nesta she had bought a book series and for Elain some gardening supplies. Then she moved to Azriel for whom she got a new dagger, and finally you… you opened the velvet box and gasped, she got you the necklace you had been checking out for months. You hugged her and then it was Rhysand’s turn, he bought Feyre an art gallery and jewellery and weapons for the rest of you.
Azriel’s turn came, and he gave Feyre a sketchbook, then gave Rhysand a new pair of Illyrian leathers, and a new sword to Cassian. He had bought Nesta a book and then he moved to Elain, you almost growled when she gasped and held a bracelet with a pink rose charm. Then it was your turn, he looked nervous as he grabbed the last bag and gave it to you.
At the same time Cassian pushed a similar bag in Nesta’s hands whispering “I can’t wait anymore open it please”
You opened the bag and saw a small velvet box, your heart stopped and you glanced at Azriel. It’s happening. You thought and opened the box with a huge smile on your face.
“Oh Az… uhm thank you” your smile fluttered.
He furrowed his eyebrows and asked “what?”
“I love them” you smiled and showed him the box, a pair of earrings was inside and he frowned.
Nesta squealed and jumped on her feet
“Yes yes yes a million times yes” she screamed and hugged a very confused Cassian.
Your eyes watered as you stared at them.
Cassian gulped as he saw the ring. He was sweating but seeing Nesta’s reaction he smiled and placed it on her finger. You couldn’t take it anymore so you congratulated them and excused yourself. Azriel was speechless… he glared at Cassian and hurried off to find you.
You were in your shared room, sitting on the bed and crying. Azriel felt a pang in his chest but he couldn’t tell you, he didn’t want to do this without the ring. Rage filled him and he thought about all the ways he would beat Cassian.
“What’s wrong angel?” He asked and sat next to you.
“Do you even love me anymore?” You asked him, your voice breaking.
“Of course, more than anything… where is this coming from?”
You just shrugged and laid back. You didn’t mind that he didn’t propose as much as the fact that he gave Elain something that reminded of her while he gave to you a pair of simple earrings…and he knew that you didn’t even wear earrings.
He opened his mouth to speak again but quickly shut it as you turned your back on him and tried to sleep.
Azriel was confused because he didn’t feel any disappointment down the bond, just jealousy. He thought about it and then it hit him…he gave Elain -with whom you had a problem- a thoughtful gift while he gave you something that you didn’t even use. He felt even worse and with a groan he fell back and stared at the ceiling.
The morning came and you woke up alone in bed…
✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧
“Why didn’t you tell her?” Rhysand exclaimed.
“Because I don’t want to ruin this too.” Azriel sighed. “I met her a few days before you were trapped under the mountain so our first years as mates were not easy, then she moved to the house of wind where everyone was mourning you and we didn’t even have a ceremony for accepting the bond, she just brought a piece of apple pie in our room and offered it to me…. The next days I was busy helping Mor, Cassian and Amren rule Velaris and  we didn’t even celebrate our bond. I can’t let anything destroy the proposal too.”
Cassian walked into Rhysand’s office and Azriel immediately pounced on him.
“You fucking idiot” -punch
“Why didn’t you say something?” -punch
“You fucking stole my ring” -punch
“You stole my moment" -punch, punch
The warlord was accepting the punishment knowing that he messed up, only when the high lord pulled Azriel back he dared to speak.
“I’m so sorry brother… I was shocked I didn’t know what to do…and Nesta was so excited… I couldn’t find it in my heart to destroy the moment” he avoided Azriel’s gaze, the shame consuming him.
“I. Want. My. Ring. Back.” The shadowsinger growled, pausing between each word.
“Okay…” Cassian mumbled and left.
✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧
You were sitting in your room staring out the window… you wondered if Elain came here sooner would Azriel still want you to accept the mating bond? You doubted that and pain filled your heart.
A knock on the door pulled you out of your thoughts and Nesta walked in.
“Heyyyy, I was wondering if you would like to come with me to the store where Cassian got me the ring, I want to ask them how to maintain it clean” she said and stretched her hand out staring at the ring.
“Sure” you shrugged and got up.
✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧
Feyre came and winnowed the three of you to the store, you walked in gaping at all the jewels there… the store was really expensive.
“Hello, I recently got engaged and I wanted to ask how to clean this” Nesta asked the salesman and showed him the ring.
“Ooh yeah, you must be y/n” he smiled, you glanced up but he wasn’t looking at you, he was talking to Nesta.
“The shadowsinger was so excited when he found this ring, he kept saying how shiny it was  just like your eyes” he continued and Nesta gulped. You were staring wide-eyed, your jaw almost touched the floor but thankfully Feyre pushed it back in place.
“Azriel bought this?” Feyre asked.
“Yes my lady, your husband was here too, he was helping the shadowsinger choose.”
“What about Cassian?” Nesta asked and the salesman gave her a questioning look.
“The warlord, the general of the armies… the brute with the red siphons” she explained and you and Feyre snorted at the last remark.
“Oh yes. He was here first he got a beautiful set of earrings”
And then it hit you, somehow the two idiots mixed their presents. Nesta growled and turned around marching out.
“Thank you” Feyre smiled and pulled you out.
 Nesta was pacing…
“Y/n I’m so sorry” she said when she saw you.
“It’s okay Ness” you smiled.
“Why didn’t the idiot say something? Oh he is sleeping outside today” she growled.
“I think he just didn’t want to ruin the moment, you were really excited” your voice was soft as you spoke.
“Yeah but we ruined your moment” she pushed
“It’s okay I’m used to it” you shrugged with a sad smile.
She gave you the ring.
“I think this belongs to you”
You placed it on your finger and stared.
“The stone is the same color as Azriel’s siphons” Feyre noted.
“Yeah I was confused about that too” Nesta shrugged.
✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧
Dinner was served and you and the girls walked inside the dining room taking your usual seats. Azriel glanced at you with a worried look and Cassian whispered something to Nesta… she shook her head and smirked.
The room buzzed with conversation and everything felt normal again, you reached for the wine bottle in front of Azriel, the ring on display. Azriel was taking a sip from his wine and the moment his eyes fell on the ring he choked, spraying the wine all over the table making everyone stop and look at you.
You giggled while Nesta and Feyre smiled.
“Where… how…when?” Azriel was blurting out questions.
“We went to the shop today and the salesman called Nesta by my name so we figured” you shrugged and smiled.
Cassian’s eyes widened and he pushed his chair back, he glanced at Nesta and with a quick “oh shit” he jumped up and ran away, Nesta following suit.
Azriel smiled softly and took your hand in his own, pressing a small kiss on the back of your palm.
“I didn’t want this to happen like this…. We deserve one good moment” he whispered.
“Being in the dining room with all our family is a pretty good moment…” you smiled “and maybe we can lock Cassian in a cell on our wedding day”
Azriel burst into laughter and pulled you in his arms.
“I promise to give you the most amazing wedding day” he smiled and kissed you.
Requests are open!

Why Vivienne Needs the Inquisition
No one 'winds up' at Court, my dear. It takes a great deal of effort to arrive there.
–Enchanter Vivienne to the Inquisitor
An ask I received (referring, I think, to something I said in this post, though I've alluded to it at other points as well):
How/why is Vivienne's position at court shakier than it seems? (Please publish this anonymously.)
Thank you for asking! I’ve wanted to write something on this subject for a while, so I appreciate the push to get it all down. It’s something I find really interesting about Vivienne, because it's something she doesn't want the Inquisitor, or anyone, to know, so it's all subtext in the game. Vivienne is a character who always holds the player character at arms' length--a bit less so when she likes them, but there is always some distance there. As such, she's a difficult character to get to know.
And while I do have some issues with the way Vivienne is handled in the game, particularly with narrative and quest design, I won’t be touching on those heavily here. For this post I want to focus on what can be determined about her motivations from the character as written.
Vivienne can be recruited to the Inquisition after the Inquisitor's first trip to Val Royeaux. Notably, she seeks out the Inquisitor's attention herself, inviting them to a gala at the Duke of Ghislain's estate, and also notably, once recruited she will not leave the Inquisition and cannot be forced to leave, no matter how low her approval of the Inquisitor. This is also something I have seen people question: why can't you kick Vivienne out, and why won't she simply leave if she disapproves of your choices? I hope this post will answer that question as well.
The most critical aspect of Vivienne's character to understand, I think, is that she has no stable institutional power. She is not a noble. She has no familial connections of the sort that can help even a mage to keep their head above water. She is a woman who was taken from her family at a young age and raised in an institution, and who has used all her wit and charisma to make the very best of that situation for herself.
Vivienne's position as First Enchanter of Montsimmard is mostly an achievement within the Circle itself. Montsimmard itself, however, was also a stepping stone to influence outside the Circle. Personally, I think the fact that Vivienne declined to join any fraternity when she became a full Enchanter, a shocking move at the time, indicates that she held ambitions outside the Circle from a young age. And Montsimmard was the perfect proving ground for her, a major Orlesian city whose ruling family maintain close relations with the Circle. In The Masked Empire, the Marquise de Montsimmard boasts about dining at the Circle, and she and her husband wear masks adorned with lyrium crystals which we are told were a gift from the First Enchanter. It seems likely, though not confirmed, that this was Vivienne herself.
(Incidentally, it is a real shame that Vivienne’s character seems to have solidified so late in the game’s development, because in retrospect I really feel her absence in the novels. She gets a brief mention in The Masked Empire as Madame de Fer, and absolutely nothing in Asunder, which we'll come back to.)
It seems that the Montsimmard mages were called upon with some regularity to entertain the court, and this is how Vivienne first caught the attention of Duke Bastien in 9:16 Dragon. Within a year, she had moved into a suite in his estate. Her position came under attack for the next few years, but nonetheless, after a single meeting with Empress Celene in 9:20 Dragon, she became the newly-crowned Empress's Court Enchanter.
(Edited to add: It seems to be sometime after this that Vivienne became First Enchanter of Montsimmard, at "an age young enough to cause scandal," though the date is never confirmed that I can find. Incidentally, as @shrovetidecat brought to my attention in the notes, Fiona is also supposed to have been Grand Enchanter of Montsimmard, which given that may be a lore inconsistency, unless Vivienne is only meant to have taken the position after Fiona rose to Grand Enchanter—and I'm not sure why a 40-year-old First Enchanter would be scandalous.)
By the time she meets the Inquisitor, she is likely somewhere in her 40s, and has been the Enchanter to the Imperial Court and the Mistress to the Duke de Ghislain for twenty years. She regularly mingles with the court and has built a practically unprecedented influence for herself in Orlesian high society.
And it's all about to fall apart, for three critical reasons.
First, the obvious: the mage rebellion. One cannot be First Enchanter of a Circle that no longer exists, though Vivienne certainly tries. A majority of mages, even if by a razor-thin margin, have declared that they do not recognize the Circle's authority—and therefore Vivienne's authority as a loyal Enchanter within that system.
I think Vivienne's dialogue with the Inquisitor and her remarks if taken to Redcliffe reveal a deep frustration and resentment of Grand Enchanter Fiona, who called for the vote to leave the Circle and now leads the rebel mages. Vivienne of course handles this in the manner to which she is accustomed, the culture of the Imperial Court, in which trading in verbal jabs and barely-veiled insults is a standard matter of social one-upsmanship. Outside of that environment, she comes across as petty and rude, which is an interesting point of characterization in itself: Vivienne has thrived in the court environment, but she does seem to have a bit of trouble adapting her manner to different circumstances, where that sort of thing might not benefit her. But what she's trying to do is frame herself before the Inquisitor as the reasonable and respectable mage, and Fiona as misguided and pitiable. How well this goes for her, of course, depends on who the Inquisitor is. But the effort itself kind of reveals the shaky ground she's standing on.
In her dialogue with the Inquisitor, Vivienne claims that as the rebel mages follow Fiona, the loyal mages follow her. But where are these loyal mages? There's maybe one or two mages we meet in the game (Enchanter Ellendra comes to mind) who seem to respect Vivienne's word. But if the loyal mages look to her as a leader, why is Ellendra alone in a cave in the Hinterlands to begin with? Why doesn't Vivienne bring a group of these loyal mages with her to Skyhold?
I think it's because Vivienne doesn't truly have followers among the mages, the way Fiona does. This is the story she's telling the Inquisitor, to capitalize on the idea that the rebel position is not a consensus, and also that she still has influence among a significant number of mages. The truth is, she doesn't. She’s spent most of her life courting influence outside the Circle, not in it. She has presided over a Circle where she doesn’t even live day-to-day. I can’t imagine that has particularly endeared her to many of her fellow mages, even the ones who are loyalists or moderates.
Contrast this with Wynne, a pro-Circle Aequitarian who is deeply involved in Circle life despite undertaking sanctioned work outside the tower, and is also deeply involved in the events leading up to the vote for independence. Whatever the Doylist reasons for Vivienne's absense from Asunder, the fact remains: she's just not there. She has no presence in the events leading up to the rebellion. When speaking critically of Fiona's vote, she discusses it in the context of Anders' attack on the Kirkwall Chantry, and says nothing of the circumstances surrounding Fiona's push for a vote—not the revelations about Tranquility, not the conclave (no not that Conclave, the conclave of mages at which Fiona called for the vote for independence), not the subsequent massacre by the templars and the remaining mages' decision to stand and fight. And perhaps most notably, no one mentions Vivienne, positively or negatively, during the events of Asunder. Not once. We are left with the conclusion that Vivienne is simply not heavily involved in Circle politics, no matter what impression she may wish to give the Inquisitor. Her influence does not lie within the Circle.
And I think Vivienne knows this, and realizes that it's suddenly become a big problem for her.
The second big problem is Morrigan.
Vivienne has had the favor of the Empress herself for twenty years. She has, by others' accounts, managed to turn the position of Court Enchanter from "little more than court jester" to a position of influence and respect. And then the Grand Duke attempts a coup, and the Empress's elven lover runs away with a dangerous secret, and suddenly the Empress is enlisting the services of some unwashed swamp witch while Vivienne is standing right there!
Like I cannot overstate what a absolutely galling slap in the face it would be to Vivienne that even as she is attempting to uphold the legitimacy of the Circle and thus of her own authority within it, Celene effectively creates the "Arcane Advisor" position as "Court Mage 2: Apostate Boogaloo" just so she can get advice on non-Circle-approved magics. Advice that Vivienne could not give even if she wanted to, even if the Empress asked, because she has no knowledge of eluvians and ancient elven magic.
Both Dorian and Cole needle Vivienne about her jealousy of Morrigan, and I think quite accurately, no matter how quick Vivienne is to deny it.
Her influence over the Empress is fast eroding. She has been replaced in all but name.
And the third and most personal big problem is Bastien's illness.
Vivienne has enjoyed a romance with one of the empire's most influential nobles for twenty years. She has lived in his home and been on good terms with his wife until her passing. Her influence in the Imperial Court owes a lot to Bastien's affections. Bastien is not only a Duke but a member of the Council of Heralds, the political body responsible for overseeing matters of titles and inheritance in Orlais. They are quite literally the most powerful group in the country; even the Empress rules at their favor, without which she would never have gained the throne in the first place.
And now Bastien is dying, something Vivienne takes care not to mention to the Inquisitor at first. It's not until after the ball at the Winter Palace that Vivienne asks the Inquisitor for help with her potion in a last-ditch attempt to prolong his life—and even then she does not reveal her true purpose until after the Inquisitor has returned with the wyvern's heart. And while it's possible to interpret multiple ways, I personally believe from her response to his death that she did care for Bastien. She didn't need to bring the Inquisitor to his deathbed at all, if she wanted to continue concealing his illness, something she's taken care to do up until that point. It bespeaks a measure of trust that she allows the Inquisitor to see her so—in her grief, as well as in her loss of position.
Because Bastien's death is a terrible loss for Vivienne socially as well as personally. Bastien's son will inherit his estate, and whether Vivienne is allowed to go on living there will be entirely at his discretion. Perhaps he will permit her to stay, but she cannot count upon his grace, nor upon the protection she enjoyed with Bastien any longer; and furthermore if she is allowed to stay, it will be a favor to her, making her beholden rather than granting her greater influence. She won't have the dignity of being Bastien's widow; she is his mistress, and respected as that position may be in the Orlesian court, it gives her no true claim to his family.
Vivienne is about to lose everything she has built for herself.
Without Bastien, without Celene, she will be left with… what? The position of First Enchanter to a Circle that no longer exists? If her own best-case scenario occurs and the rebellion is halted and the Circles are reinstated, then she still loses all the freedom she has gained and is forced to return to a Circle tower herself—a sphere in which, as previously discussed, she holds less influence than she would like the Inquisitor to believe. Even if she remains First Enchanter, it's hard to see this as anything but a massive step down in the social hierarchy, the beginning of a long slide into what the Fade reveals as her greatest fear: irrelevance.
It's a humiliation that Vivienne cannot bear.
This is why she won't leave the Inquisition, no matter how much she may despise the Inquisitor. Vivienne needs the Inquisition far more than she lets on. This even puts the petty low-approval furniture-moving scene into context. Yes, she’s doing it to snub the Inquisitor, but that doesn’t actually gain her anything. I think it’s deeper than that. The Inquisition was Vivienne’s fallback plan, and it’s not going well. The Inquisitor is making her look bad, she is finding no avenue to further advancement here, but she can’t leave. So, her response is to try to reclaim some sense of control over her life, asserting a kind of power she had at Bastien’s estate and was likely denied in the Circle: control over her own space.
Even if Bastien were to live a bit longer, Vivienne really has nowhere higher she can climb in the Imperial Court. She can't become a noble herself. She can't marry Bastien, or any other noble for that matter, because she is a mage. And I'm sure she's highly aware of this fact. Bastien is several years a widower himself; it is not his former marriage that prevents him from marrying her, now. It is her status as a mage which bars her from entering a noble family, legally, socially, politically. That Bastien never seems to have raised the question at all speaks to the fact that no matter how much he may have stuck his neck out for Vivienne, there was a line even he was not interested in crossing.
So where does she have to go from here?
Along comes the nascent Inquisition. Shaking things up. If any organization could rattle the gilded walls of the Chantry, it's this one.
Why not take a stab at the Chantry, at this point? What does she have to lose?
It didn’t really sink in for me for several playthroughs because she isn't wearing cleric's garb, but Bastien's sister Marcelline, who visits Skyhold after his death with Bastien’s son? She's a grand cleric. One of the surviving grand clerics who will decide the next Divine. Vivienne involves the Inquisitor in her plan to save Bastien, a plan she likely knows will fail—but she puts in the effort. She then introduces the Inquisitor to Grand Cleric Marcelline, having told her how the Inquisitor came to her aid. Marcelline expresses gratitude: “Madame de Fer has told us what great trials you faced, trying to save my poor brother’s life.” Bastien’s son Laurent is a powerful ally in his own right, now a member of the Council of Heralds, but also likely the one who will decide whether Vivienne keeps her suite in the Ghislain estate.
And if the conversation goes well, Vivienne tells the Inquisitor that it was "quite the triumph." If the Inquisitor expresses confusion, she patiently explains the influence that both Laurent and Marcelline wield, and that they have now secured the trust of both. If Vivienne becomes Divine, Marcelline’s favor no doubt goes a long way in getting her there.
Of course Vivienne will continue to take a conservative position on the mage question. A mage looking to insinuate herself into the Chantry hierarchy would have to, just as a mage seeking the freedom to consort with the court would have to. In the same way that a Hawke with aspirations of seizing the vacant seat of Kirkwall's Viscount must side with the templars at the end to show the nobility that they represent stability and order, the Chantry's first mage cleric must be pro-Circle, pro-templar, conservative to the bone. Vivienne seems to recognize this as far more important than actually appearing devout. It's also fascinating to me how little she bothers to make any pretense of a personal faith, instead always discussing the Chantry as an important social institution and political body. And this attitude doesn't seem to impede her chances at the Sunburst Throne very much, no more so than being a mage already would.
Vivienne knows exactly what she's doing. She always has.
Vivienne comes to the Inquisition seeking power and influence in the Chantry because her position among the nobility is falling apart. Whether she comes in with the intention to reach for the Sunburst throne itself is debatable, and I personally think it might have been the intent that she does have that ambition but seeks to let the Inquisitor think it was their own idea, though I'm iffy on how successful that is if it was the intent. Nonetheless, I do believe that Vivienne comes to the Inquisition with the intent to seek influence within the Chantry, realizing that the recent upheaval may offer her a unique opportunity to do so. And depending on how closely the Inquisitor aligns with her goals, she may succeed quite dramatically.
