We are just a week away from the 95th Academy Awards, a.k.a. The Oscars®. It will happen on March 13 at 5:30 PM IST. The celebrations of the Oscar season are at their peak. Amid the fun and excitement, here's a look at the final segment of the technical award categories and our predictions of the winners:-
Tumblr media
Best Sound
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front – Viktor Prášil, Frank Kruse, Markus Stemler, Lars Ginzel, and Stefan Korte
Avatar: The Way of Water – Julian Howarth, Gwendolyn Yates Whittle, Dick Bernstein, Christopher Boyes, Gary Summers, and Michael Hedges
The Batman – Stuart Wilson, William Files, Douglas Murray, and Andy Nelson
Elvis – David Lee, Wayne Pashley, Andy Nelson, and Michael Keller
Top Gun: Maverick – Mark Weingarten, James H. Mather, Al Nelson, Chris Burdon, and Mark Taylor
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prediction(s): All Quiet on the Western Front/Top Gun: Maverick
It's usually a war/military movie or a musical that wins the Sound award. Topgun: Maverick seems to be a strong competitor because of the Action-filled dogfighting scenes and final combat in the climax. Western Front is also a strong contender because of the battle scenes.
Best Production Design
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front – Production Design: Christian M. Goldbeck; Set Decoration: Ernestine Hipper
Avatar: The Way of Water – Production Design: Dylan Cole and Ben Procter; Set Decoration: Vanessa Cole
Babylon – Production Design: Florencia Martin; Set Decoration: Anthony Carlino
Elvis – Production Design: Catherine Martin and Karen Murphy; Set Decoration: Bev Dunn
The Fabelmans – Production Design: Rick Carter; Set Decoration: Karen O'Hara
Tumblr media
Prediction: Elvis
From the 1950s to the 1970s, the sets well-exhibit the story of the King of Rock n Roll - from his home to the carnivals to the stadiums to the TV and recording studios to the lavishing hotels of Las Vegas.
Best Cinematography
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front – James Friend
Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths – Darius Khondji
Elvis – Mandy Walker
Empire of Light – Roger Deakins
Tár – Florian Hoffmeister
Tumblr media
Prediction: All Quiet on The Western Front
It's because the camera work of James Friend captures the horrors of the First World War. The fighting in broad daylight is realistic and gives chills every time you see it.
Best Makeup & Hairstyling
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front – Heike Merker and Linda Eisenhamerová
The Batman – Naomi Donne, Mike Marino, and Mike Fontaine
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Camille Friend and Joel Harlow
Elvis – Mark Coulier, Jason Baird, and Aldo Signoretti
The Whale – Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Anne Marie Bradley
Tumblr media
Prediction: Elvis
Is it possible to make a movie on Elvis Presley without his puffed hair and sideburns? Hairstyles play a crucial role in his era of the 1950s-70s.
Best Costume Designing
Nominees:
Babylon – Mary Zophres
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Ruth E. Carter
Elvis – Catherine Martin
Everything Everywhere All at Once – Shirley Kurata
Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris – Jenny Beavan
Tumblr media
Prediction: Elvis
The film is all about colors, nostalgia, and costumes of the Presley years.
Best Film Editing
Nominees:
The Banshees of Inisherin – Mikkel E. G. Nielsen
Elvis – Matt Villa and Jonathan Redmond
Everything Everywhere All at Once – Paul Rogers
Tár – Monika Willi
Top Gun: Maverick – Eddie Hamilton
Tumblr media
Prediction: Top Gun: Maverick
The editing of the sortie scenes and the final aerial battle is what makes the Top Gun sequel the ultimate winner of the editing award.
Best Visual Effects
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front – Frank Petzold, Viktor Müller, Markus Frank, and Kamil Jafar
Avatar: The Way of Water – Joe Letteri, Richard Baneham, Eric Saindon, and Daniel Barrett
The Batman – Dan Lemmon, Russell Earl, Anders Langlands, and Dominic Tuohy
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Geoffrey Baumann, Craig Hammack, R. Christopher White, and Dan Sudick
Top Gun: Maverick – Ryan Tudhope, Seth Hill, Bryan Litson, and Scott R. Fisher
Tumblr media
Prediction: Avatar: The Way of Water
Cameron's film can become the first sequel to win the same award in this category. The beautiful visuals of the world of Pandora would surely take the trophy home.

Film Courage: Are story and plot the same thing?
Markus Redmond, Actor/Writer/Director/Producer: I don’t know? That’s a good question. Should we ask Siri?
Film Courage: I hadn’t thought of that? Let’s try it.
Markus: Because I don’t know. Hey Siri!
Siri: Yes.
Markus: What’s the difference between plot and story?...(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).

Favorites : The Inkwell (1994)
Tumblr media
In the wake of Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing, the doors seemed wide open for a number of young Black directors to step into the business, and one of the youngest and brightest was Matty Rich.  After writing, directing and producing the breakout debut film that was Straight Out of Brooklyn, Rich returned to the scene with a completely different look in the form of The Inkwell, but unfortunately (or possibly fortunately, as he found success in other realms), the film did not connect the same way as his debut.  In my opinion, this was a shame, as I’ve deeply enjoyed The Inkwell from my first access to it.
Sixteen year old Drew Tate (Larenz Tate) is an emotionally stunted and misunderstood young man living in Upstate New York.  His parents, Kenny (Joe Morton) and Brenda Tate (Suzzanne Douglass), decide to spend the summer of 1976 by taking Drew to visit his family in Martha’s Vineyard for two weeks.  The Tates settle in with Spencer (Glynn Turman) and Francis Phillips (Vanessa Bell Calloway), Drew’s aunt and uncle, his grandmother Evelyn (Mary Alice), and his cousin Junior (Duane Martin), but things get off to a rocky start.  Spencer and Francis suggest that Drew meet with their friend Dr. Wade (Phyllis Yvonne Stickley), a psychiatrist, much to the behest of Kenny, but Drew quickly finds himself obsessed with a local girl named Lauren Kelly (Jada Pinkett-Smith).  Despite the constant teasing of Junior and his two friends, Darryl (Markus Redmond) and Moe (Perry Moore), Drew takes a shot at getting to know Lauren, and in the process, discovers more about himself than he realized was possible.
While The Inkwell is at heart a romantic comedy and coming of age film, at its heart, it’s truly a film about the struggle between socio-political and economic ideas that plague Black people in their struggle to find where they fit in.  While we are given two extreme examples in Kenny and Spencer, at the heart of their characters, they perfectly define those concerned with the betterment of their people as a whole versus those who think that financial success will bring Black people to the place where they belong in society.  Kenny and Brenda’s struggles with raising Drew also bring up long-held assumptions of and hesitations to use psychiatry and psychology as a way to raise a child, chiefly based on ideas that Drew would be labelled crazy, and they would be labelled failures as parents.
Speaking of Drew, I found myself extremely connected to and understanding of the character seeing that I was a young, imaginative and, at times, isolated individual growing up.  Having our protagonist be an understanding, sensitive and caring young man rather than someone forced to make life-altering decisions with their back against the wall was a refreshing change of pace.  Positioning Drew as the son of Kenny begs the question if Drew’s sensitive nature stems directly from Kenny’s radical posturing and outward focus, as if his personality and actions were a cry for attention of some sort.  This is further driven home with details such as Drew’s doll/imaginary friend Iago whom he constantly talks to, or his tandem bike that publicly broadcasts his need for companionship.
It’s not only nice to see a film with a majority Black cast in a location such as Martha’s Vineyard, but more importantly, nice to see a coming of age film with Black characters that’s absent of the hood as the primary setting.  Speaking of settings, the Phillips home is definitely impressive, and Junior’s room specifically is a goldmine of stimulus.  With the many, many personalities presented through our characters, we are given a surprisingly deep exploration of Black identity.  As a 1970′s film, it probably doesn’t need to be stated, but the soundtrack is KILLER.  I remember this film being poorly received when it was released, which was a shame, because Matty Rich put together a truly poignant film… perhaps it was public expectations in the wake of the successful debut Straight Out of Brooklyn, but in my opinion, people missed out on a low-key classic.
With the iconic role of O-Dog the only one on his resume at the time, it would have been very easy for Larenz Tate to fall into the realm of typecasting, but The Inkwell allowed him to be as vulnerable and short of confidence as O-Dog was menacing and terrifying.  Joe Morton channels enough radical posturing to be believable as an ex-revolutionary, but not at the cost of displaying caring and loving characteristics.  Suzzanne Douglass displays all of the patience and unconditional love it takes to raise a troubled young man.  Glynn Turman dives headlong into bougie characteristics with great aplomb, barely avoiding becoming a caricature in the best ways possible, while Vanessa Bell Calloway steps in as the support system that allows Spencer to validate his actions.  Mary Alice plays withdrawn and guarded, only letting down her guard as the film comes close to resolution.  Duane Martin brings most of the comedy beats to the table, and has great chemistry with Markus Redmond and Perry Moore.  Jada Pinkett-Smith displays all the beauty and charm that makes her irresistible, while channeling all of the fierceness and selfishness it takes to make her wholly undesirable.  Phyllis Yvonne Stickley and Adrienne-Joi Johnson bring the most grounded and sincere human elements to the table, while Morris Chestnut plays the stereotypical womanizer role to a tee.  Supporting appearances by Akia Victor and R&B group Jade round out the main cast.
While the film was not a financial success at the box office, there has been a slow but steady growth of a grassroots following that has discovered the film many years after the fact.  As someone who has been a day one fan of the film, it’s nice to know that I’m not crazy, and it’s validating to know that I was way ahead of the curve in terms of The Inkwell fandom.  I will certainly continue to bear the torch for this slept-on classic, and maybe in due time, it will find the connection with the masses that it always deserved.

Murasejeva in Kleveland zmagovalca kvalifikacij slopestyle tekme za svetovni pokal v Aspnu, Mekinc petinpetdeseti
Tumblr media
V moški konkurenci je najvišjo oceno dneva (94.00 točk) dobil aktualni svetovni prvak v slopestylu in bronasti v big airu, Norvežan Marcus Kleveland. Finalisti iz prve skupine so: Redmond Gerard (ZDA), Max Parrot (Kanada), Justus Henkes (ZDA), Liam Brearley (Kanada), Moritz Thönen (Švica) in Hiroaki Kunitake (Japonska).
Tumblr media

There is one head that obstructs a small portion of the front of the stage, but it never blocks more than the actors’ feet and it’s rarely noticeable overall. There is no washout, and the sound is excellent as usual. It’s filmed in 16:9 with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. The cast was full of energy and really ready to perform the show, since the Broadway closing. I have never heard Idina sing the score as she had this night, great new riffs, variations and such power, nailed it! If/Then - First National Tour - January 24, 2016 (SJ Bernly's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Idina Menzel (Elizabeth), LaChanze (Kate), Trey Ellett (u/s Lucas), James Snyder (Josh), Daren A Herbert (Stephen), Janine DiVita (Anne), Marc delaCruz (David), Kyra Faith (Elena), Corey Greenan (Deputy Mayor and others), Cliffton Hall (A Bartender and others), Xavier Cano (A Solider and others), Alicia Taylor Tomasko (A Flight Attendant and others), Tyler McGee (A Street Musician and others), English Bernhardt (Paulette and others), Deedee Magno Hall (Cathy and others) NOTES: Idina's last performance. Jackie is such a powerhouse and driving force! A+ If/Then - Pre-Broadway / Washington, D.C. - November 9, 2013 (Preview) (SunsetBlvd79's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Idina Menzel (Elizabeth), LaChanze (Kate), Anthony Rapp (Lucas), James Snyder (Josh), Jerry Dixon (Stephen), Jenn Colella (Anne), Jason Tam (David), Tamika Lawrence (Elena), Joe Cassidy (Deputy Mayor and others), Miguel Cervantes (A Bartender and others), Curtis Holbrook (A Solider and others), Stephanie Klemons (A Flight Attendant and others), Tyler McGee (A Street Musician and others), Ryann Redmond (Paulette and others), Joe Aaron Reid (An Architect and others), Ann Sanders (Cathy and others) NOTES: Beautiful HD capture in the out of town tryout! The audience was energetic and enthusiastic throughout. Shot in a mix of wides and zooms. This video is of the actors ON STAGE, not the big screens set up around the venue. There is occasional spotlight washout, but it is quickly corrected. Shot in crystal clear HD with no obstructions. Into the Woods - Hollywood Bowl - July 27, 2019 FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Patina Miller (Witch), Skylar Astin (Baker), Sutton Foster (Baker's Wife), Sierra Boggess (Cinderella), Shanice Williams (Little Red Riding Hood), Gaten Matarazzo (Jack), Cheyenne Jackson (Wolf/Cinderella's Prince), Chris Carmack (Rapunzel's Prince), Edward Hibbert (Narrator), Anthony Crivello (Mysterious Man), Rebecca Spencer (Jack's Mother), Evelyn Okano (Cinderella's Stepmother), Grace Yoo (Florinda), Stella Kim (Lucinda), Gregory North (Cinderella's Father), Daniel Lopez (Steward), Hailey Kilgore (Rapunzel), Whoopi Goldberg (Giant's voice), Tamyra Gray (Granny/Cinderella’s Mother) NOTES: Camera is pointed at the live screen during the whole show, except during "Ever After" and the Finale where it points to the stage. Starts in the middle of the Prologue, shortly after the Witch arrives. Exact date is unclear since one act was labelled the 27th and the other 28th. This could simply be a typing mistake by the master since both acts seem to be from one performance. Into the Woods - Regent's Park Open Air Theatre - September 9, 2010 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Hannah Waddingham (Witch), Mark Hadfield (Baker), Jenna Russell (Baker's Wife), Helen Dallimore (Cinderella), Beverly Rudd (Little Red Riding Hood), Ben Stott (Jack), Michael Xavier (Wolf/Cinderella's Prince), Simon Thomas (Rapunzel's Prince), Billy Boyle (Mysterious Man), Marilyn Cutts (Jack's Mother), Gaye Brown (Cinderella's Stepmother), Amy Ellen Richardson (Florinda), Amy Griffiths (Lucinda), Mark Goldthorp (Steward), Alice Fearn (Rapunzel), Alice Fearn (Sleeping Beauty), Dame Judi Dench (Giant's voice) NOTES: Sept 9/10, 2010. Exists in 2 versions, one is a DT rip, in 720p and low bitrate sound and video, and and Amazon rip in 1080p and high bitrate sound and video. Ask traders. Into the Woods - Shakespeare In The Park - August 1, 2012 (Preview) (House-Cam's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Donna Murphy (Witch), Denis O'Hare (Baker), Amy Adams (Baker's Wife), Jessie Mueller (Cinderella), Gideon Glick (Jack), Ivan Hernandez (Wolf/Cinderella's Prince), Paris Remillard (u/s Rapunzel's Prince), Noah Radcliffe (u/s Narrator), Chip Zien (Mysterious Man), Kristine Zbornik (Jack's Mother), Ellen Harvey (Cinderella's Stepmother), Chip Zien (Cinderella's Father), Josh Lamon (Steward), Tess Soltau (Rapunzel), Glenn Close (Giant's voice) NOTES: Single cam, whole-stage shot, no zooms. It's Kind of a Funny Story - 54 Below - March 20, 2017 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) |  TRADER'S NOTES: Highlights CAST: Alex Brightman, Alex Goley, Aneesh Sheth, Ann Harada, Bryce Pinkham, Colton Ryan, Delaney Amatrudo, Drew Gasparini, Evie Dolan, Molly Hager, Noel Carey, Preston Truman Boyd, Reed Campbell, Rozi Baker NOTES: YouTube rip from the 54 Below livestream. Meant to be archival footage. Drew Gasparini returns to his beloved Feinstein’s/54 Below to share "It’s Kind of a Funny Story," a musical about the simpler things in life: anxiety, depression, and possible insanity. When Craig Gilner, a sixteen-year old piece of social wallpaper, attempts and fails to jump off the Brooklyn Bridge, he admits himself into a mental hospital. Far from the squeezing scrutiny of family, friends, social media, and growing up, Craig is able to face his fears with the help of the unlikeliest people on earth and learns the answer to the question, “If everyone is crazy, is anyone crazy?” Based on the best-selling novel by Ned Vizzini and the 2010 Focus Features film, "It’s Kind of a Funny Story" – a commission for Universal Stage Productions – features music & lyrics by Drew and a book by 2016 Tony nominee and fellow (M)oron Alex Brightman.

my take on every trade deadline trade
as you may have heard, several trades happened today. here are my comments on all of them. just the trades that happened today, though. if you came here expecting to see my opinion on, like, Washington giving up a third-round pick for Ilya Kovalchuk, you’re outta luck, pal. that trade happened yesterday.
aw, heck, tell ya what, I’ll give you that one for free (”seems fine”). anyway, let’s get started.
Detroit trades Mike Green to Edmonton for Kyle Brodziak and a 2020 conditional fourth-round pick.
I don’t know if Mike Green is still good (though given his age and the team he’s played for in recent years, I have a pretty good guess), but at the low acquisition cost of a mid-round pick and some guy I didn’t know was still in the league, it doesn’t matter too much.
Ottawa trades Vladislav Namestnikov to Colorado for a 2021 fourth-round pick.
on its face, this is a mostly inconsequential trade, but I’d like to take this space to point out that Ottawa traded their own 2021 fourth-round pick for him earlier in the season, which means they likely downgraded a draft pick for “a few months of Vladislav Namestnikov in a lost season.” cool.
Ottawa trades Jean-Gabriel Pageau to NY Islanders for a 2020 conditional first-round pick, a 2020 second-round pick, and a 2022 conditional third-round pick.
that’s a bit rich for my blood. J.G. Pageau drives play pretty well, but he typically doesn’t score at a very high rate. what’s his shooting percentage this season, by the way? 17.8%? ok, yeah, that makes sense. I see why Lou traded a first and a second for him now, and immediately extended him for six years. look, any time you can buy high on a 27-year-old who’s shooting nearly double his career average shooting percentage and then lock him up long-term at a price point commensurate with the assumption that he will continue to produce into the future at the same rate he has this year, I guess you have to do it.
Florida trades Vincent Trocheck to Carolina for Erik Haula, Lucas Wallmark, Chase Priskie, and Eetu Luostarinen.
hmm. is there any reason why Florida would want to trade a reasonably productive, play-driving centre who’s signed at a decent cap hit for the next two seasons for a return best described as “a collection of spare parts”? is it that his on-ice save percentage this season is .877 and Dale Tallon’s a dumb guy who’s bad at his job? nah, that can’t be it. oh well, guess we’ll never know!
Montreal trades Nate Thompson to Philadelphia for a 2021 fifth-round pick.
not worth it. Thompson stinks. why give up any draft picks at all for him, even one as low as a fifth?
Toronto trades Michael Hutchinson to Colorado for Calle Rosen.
oh, hey! Calle Rosen’s back! I have no other commentary to offer re this trade.
San Jose trades Patrick Marleau to Pittsburgh for a 2021 conditional third-round pick.
hey, sure, why not. would’ve preferred to see both Marleau and Thornton join the same contender, win a Cup together, and then kiss, but I guess that’ll just remain confined to my fan-fiction. for now.
New Jersey trades Wayne Simmonds to Buffalo for a 2021 conditional fifth-round pick.
look, if you insist on lighting a draft pick on fire in the frivolous pursuit of a playoff appearance that isn’t gonna happen, it might as well only be a 2021 conditional fifth. who cares.
Anaheim trades Derek Grant to Philadelphia for Kyle Criscuolo and a 2020 conditional fourth-round pick.
I tried to have an opinion on this trade, but I just can’t muster one. sorry.
Montreal trades Michael Peca to Ottawa for Aaron Luchuk and a 2020 seventh-round pick.
in my day job as accountant, we have this phrase we like to use during audits and reviews. basically, if the balance of a given account is so small that it wouldn’t be worth our time to test it, we note that in the file by saying “trivial. no further work performed.” that’s this trade and about 70% of all trades on deadline day.
Anaheim trades Nick Ritchie to Boston for Danton Heinen.
this trade seems pretty reasonable for both sides. I don’t have much else to say about it other than “lmao remember how Don Cherry wanted the Leafs to draft Nick Ritchie instead of William Nylander”
Detroit trades Andreas Athanasiou and Ryan Kuffner to Edmonton for Sam Gagner, a 2020 second-round pick, and a 2021 second-round pick.
two seconds is a little pricey for a guy who is very bad defensively and isn’t a superstar offensively, but also the Oilers desperately need players who can score when McDavid and Draisaitl are off the ice. Athanasiou should help with that a tiny bit. I give Edmonton a grade of “not great, but mostly forgivable” and I give Detroit a pat on the back and a supportive “attaboy!” re this trade
Ottawa trades Tyler Ennis to Edmonton for a 2021 fifth-round pick.
decent low-cost pickup by Edmonton
Buffalo trades Evan Rodrigues and Conor Sheary to Pittsburgh for Dominik Kahun.
I’m puzzled. I was under the impression that Rodrigues and Sheary were both pretty good. so’s Kahun, I guess, but did Buffalo just want to shed salary? am I missing something here?
Dallas trades Emil Djuse to Florida for a 2020 sixth-round pick.
who
New Jersey trades Louis Domingue to Vancouver for Zane McIntyre.
trivial. no further work performed.
Philadelphia trades T.J. Brennan to Chicago for Nathan Noel.
hey! T.J. Brennan’s still kickin’ around! neat!
Montreal trades Nick Cousins to Vegas for a 2021 fourth-round pick.
hey, sure, why not.
Columbus trades Markus Hannakainen to Arizona for a 2020 conditional seventh-round pick.
trivial. no further work performed.
Anaheim trades Daniel Sprong to Washington for Christian Djoos.
I hope Sprong can earn a permanent NHL job some time soon and retroactively prove me right for wanting the Leafs to draft him back in 2015
Anaheim trades Korbinian Holzer to Nashville for Matt Irwin and a 2022 sixth-round pick.
Holzer was a sub-replacement-level defender for the Leafs five years ago. how on Earth is he still in the league and why is anyone trading for him?
Los Angeles trades Derek Forbort to Calgary for a 2021 conditional fourth-round pick.
♫ some things you do for money / and some you do Forbort bort bort ♫
hope you liked that joke because it’s the only thing I can think of to say about Derek Forbort
Columbus trades Sonny Milano to Anaheim for Devin Shore.
Devin Shore plays the same position as Sonny Milano and is older, more expensive, and not a clear improvement. not sure why Columbus would make this trade, but it doesn’t really matter all that much
San Jose trades Barclay Goodrow and a 2020 third-round pick to Tampa Bay for Anthony Greco and a 2020 first-round pick.
wait a minute Tampa Bay traded WHAT for Barclay Goodrow?!
Chicago trades Erik Gustafsson to Calgary for a 2020 conditional third-round pick.
yet another trade that makes me shrug my shoulders and say “hey, sure, why not”
Calgary trades Brandon Davidson to San Jose for future considerations.
“future considerations” is a lovely euphemism for “nothing,” don’t you think? I wish it had more applications outside the sporting world
New Jersey trades Sami Vatanen to Carolina for Frederik Claesson, Janne Kuokkanen, and a 2020 conditional fourth-round pick.
say it with me now: hey, sure, why not
Toronto trades Jordan Schmaltz to NY Islanders for Matt Lorito.
trivial. no further work performed.
Three-way trade between Chicago, Toronto, and Vegas: Chicago receives Malcolm Subban, Slava Demin, and a 2020 second-round pick from Vegas; Toronto receives a 2020 fifth-round pick from Vegas; and Vegas receives Robin Lehner and Martins Dzierkals.
this is a great trade for Vegas. they’re a dominant team at 5v5, but their undoing this season has been wretched goaltending from Marc-André Fleury and Malcolm Subban. Robin Lehner’s been much better than those guys, obviously, so it makes perfect sense. I feel much better about my earlier prediction that Vegas would make the 2020 Stanley Cup Final now.
in addition, I’m impressed that Stan Bowman was able to recognize that his team stinks and, therefore, holding onto Lehner past the deadline would’ve been pointless. congrats to him.
from the Leafs’ perspective, getting a fifth-round pick for eating a little bit of salary ain’t bad either.
Edmonton trades Joel Persson to Anaheim for Angus Redmond and a 2022 conditional seventh-round pick.
trivial. no further work performed.
NY Rangers trade Brady Skjei to Carolina for a 2020 conditional first-round pick.
I dunno if Brady Skjei moves the needle enough to be worth giving up a first-round pick, but it’s far from the most egregious asset management I’ve ever seen

You Have To Work To Get Your Screenplay Read - Markus Redmond via FilmCourage.com.
Film Courage: For a new screenwriter who has just finished a first screenplay, what do they do with it?
Markus Redmond, Actor/Writer/Director/Producer: I don’t know? [laughs]. Alright, so you are saying you write a screenplay, do you know nothing about nothing, right? You just wrote something? Okay…Internet! Internet! This is the connectivity of the world is in everybody’s palm because it’s on the phone. There are contests and websites, there’s all kinds of stuff where you can submit a screenplay and get some kind of feedback on it.
If you’re waiting for Universal to show up and grab up your scripts then you’ll be waiting a very long time. However, get it out there. Let people say no to you. Don’t be so precious about it. Just get it out there. Because if you do that and you put it in the hands of different places and different websites like Inktip.com where you can just post your script there for producers to look at if they dig your logline, you’re going to learn stuff and you’re going to understand what’s working. If nobody clicks on your script, you’ve got work to do. If people do click on your script, you’re going to find out what the deal is from there.
Especially now it’s weird because of the whole Writers Guild thing that is going on so I mean I guess you could submit it to agents…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).

Time to dump Windows 7? Microsoft’s German subsidiary says popular OS ‘does not meet the requirements of modern technology’
A blog post by Microsoft Germany is urging users still hanging onto Windows 7 to make the switch to Windows 10, warning that the older operating system is less secure, and harder and more expensive to maintain.
The blog post by Milad Aslaner, senior product manager for Microsoft in Germany, reiterated Microsoft’s plan to cut off all support, including things like security updates and tech support, for Windows 7 by 2020. Two years ago, Microsoft cut off “mainstream support” for Windows 7, which meant users still got all the important security updates but no new functions or features.
What stood out most about the post was the negative comments, from a Microsoft employee, about what remains the company’s most popular operating system.
“Today, (Windows 7) does not meet the requirements of modern technology, nor the high security requirements of IT departments,” Markus Nitschke, head of Windows at Microsoft Germany, said in the blog post, which we translated to English via Google Translate. “As early as in Windows XP, we saw that companies should take early steps to avoid future risks or costs.”
By contrast, Nitschke said, Windows 10 offers the “highest level of security and functionality at the cutting edge.” Because of its software-as-a-service model, Windows 10 is always up-to-date, he said. And Microsoft introduced several new security features for Windows 10, such as the Windows Hello feature that lets people log onto their devices via fingerprint, facial or iris recognition, that are not compatible with older versions of Windows.
These comments come as Microsoft tries to turn the page from previous complaints that the company was being too heavy-handed in its promotion of Windows 10. The messages in the German blog post were not accompanied by anything out of Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Wash. We’ve reached out for further comment from Microsoft and will update this story when we hear back.
Microsoft said in September that Windows 10 has reached 400 million actively devices, at the time 14 months after launching. But it appears quite a few Windows users have procrastinated or resisted switching from Windows 7 to Windows 10.
Analytics company NetMarketShare found that as of December, Windows 7 held the greatest market share among all operating systems for desktops at more than 48 percent. That is down slightly from about 56 percent in December 2015. Windows 10 ranked second and is gaining ground, over the same period, more than doubling from 10 percent market share to 24 percent.
