Heritage, signage, and language united.
In 500, Mark Bradford uses caulk to repeat the text of a 1913 advertisement on a grid of painted and oxidized paper on wood panels. The notice seeks five hundred families to inhabit the all-Black settlement of Blackdom, New Mexico, a site that had approximately 150 residents during the early twentieth century until the Great Depression, at which point it was largely uninhabited.
This wanted ad appeared in The Crisis, a quarterly magazine for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), to draw people looking for new opportunities across the country. Knowing only a few details about the migration of his mother’s family to Los Angeles, Bradford found great resonance with the story of Blackdom: a story of those searching for new possibilities and building community with and for other Black people.
See this work by #MarkBradford in #GreatMigrationBkM through June 25.

"Mark Bradford: You Don’t Have to Tell Me Twice," on view April 13-July 28, 2023 at @hauserwirth📍542 West 22nd Street #NYC
🎥 @hauserwirth "Hauser & Wirth presents ‘You Don’t Have to Tell Me Twice,’ a major solo exhibition by Mark Bradford filling the entirety of the gallery’s 22nd Street building. The artist’s first show in New York since 2015 features a deeply personal exploration of the multifaceted nature of displacement and the predatory forces that feed on populations driven into motion by crisis. Primarily known for his unique style of ‘social abstraction,’ Bradford turns his attention toward figures, including his own, of flora and fauna—predators and prey—that move within dense, dreamlike abstracted landscapes, masses of material, color and line."

During the 1992 riots in Los Angeles, California, Mark Bradford was living in Leimert Park, and watched his neighborhood burn. In the wake of the riots, Bradford described Leimert Park as “scorched earth.”
The 1992 Los Angeles riots began on April 29, after the verdict acquitting four police officers from Los Angeles Police Department for their excessive use of force in the arrest and beating of Rodney King in 1991.
Bradford collects different paper materials in his neighborhood, whether advertisements, employment notices, posters, maps, or billboards, and repurposes them in his art. Connie Butler writes, “Bradford works the streets into the fabric of his work—literally scouring and scraping as if extracting some of the city’s surface, and making meaning from it, will somehow suture a grid frayed to the point of unraveling as a result of social, economic, and political neglect.” (p. 16)
“Scorched earth” is also military terminology for a policy of devastation.
