Apparently I'm rewatching Firefly now... gd this show is well written.
.
There are like 8 Easter eggs/foreshadowing moments just in the first episode.
.
Simon: "He's psychotic.."
>Scene switch<
Wash, laughing hysterically: "You're psychotic!!"
.
Literally the whole scene with Badger/Mark Sheppard, giving us backstory AND character development without making it obvious
.
Just, ugh. 💛 Firefly 💛

Firefly rewatch
Episode 1: Serenity
We are introduced to all our beloved heroes. The crew of the Serenity, a Firefly class transport ship: Captain Malcolm Reynolds, jaded ex rebel soldier and believer; Zoe Washburn, his right hand and the biggest badass in the Verse; Hoban Washburn (Wash) the pilot -a leaf on the wind, and Zoe’s husband; Kaylee Frye, the sweet and somewhat naive but brilliant mechanic; Jayne Cobb, a sarcastic mercenary who looks and acts dumber than he is. Also on board is Inara Serra, the “ambassador” a beautiful and wise Companion who rents a shuttle from the Serenity.
They are scavengers, outlaws, just making do and wanting to be free from the authority of The Alliance. Taking what jobs they can and inevitably stepping in the shit.
We take on passengers: Shepherd Book, a preacher and missionary with secrets and a kind heart; Dr Simon Tam, a mysterious brilliant young surgeon with a big secret; Lawrence Dobson, with yet more secrets.
Also on this episode is none other than Mark Sheppard as Badger, a conniving, skeevy criminal who puts our crew in a tough spot.
This episode establishes our characters and their relationships. Also establishes the Verse, its combination of old West and Chinese. Plus some of the most quotable lines in television.

Mark Sheppard’s acting at the beginning of “The Devil in the Details” is great. Like I think a lot about how great Jensen’s acting is, but I was full on looking at this middle-aged man going that is a young child and I hope he is happy. But on the subject of acting, I think Jensen’s acting is good enough to have conveyed the energy they were going for without the creepy being bonded with/drawn too a child. I’m all for the creepiness, just not like that. But I just started that episode so I don’t have any thoughts on it yet. I mentioned thoughts on Len and I don’t have much to say in that vein because I’m out of the flow so the thoughts might not connect to that ask. But my other thoughts on Len are absolutely biased, because I love him. Before he was soulless the man was obsessed with the (acquitted) axe murderer Lizzie Borden. He lead a chat room, trespassed, collected so much memorabilia, and violated his restraining order. Then when his soul was taken he just decided to keep on keeping on. I think he is curious at his core and that is horrifying. This man was worked up into a ranting panic (I know he can’t “feel” that was his thing, but he would not shut up about not knowing so panic isn’t the word but still) until Dean told him and he calmed down and said “It feels good to finally know.” And then the man rips his own thumb off just to see if he could (I think that was the reason he gave and it is how he got out of the cuffs.) But then when he’s offering to take the wrap for everything. He makes it very clear that he knows it’s the right thing and that is why he is doing it. No outside forces are going to pressure Len, he’s made it clear throughout the episode that he doesn’t care anymore as such there is no shame or guilt. BUT THEN Crowley’s bitch ass (I love him but still) kills Len and my dream of ever seeing the boys have a case where they have to see how he’s adapted to soulless prison life.
Hello again! And yessss! I love Mark Sheppard so much, it's not even funny. I first saw him as Badger in the Firefly --- well, technically, in the X-Files episode "Fire," but I hadn't stored his name/face yet --- and have loved him ever since. He's also in Doctor Who btw, and I love him so much there, too... Honestly, he's just amazing! (He's how I got my sister to watch SPN, because I told her Badger was in it!) And that episode was, I definitely agree, a really good showcase of it!
Also, I do see what you're saying about the Amara arc, and I agree... I don't know why they chose that manner --- e.g. the young-girl scene --- of showing the creepiness. The entire plot of her growing up felt a bit unnecessary, to my mind, so it must have been a conscious thought, but I'm not sure why they chose it, if so. (I should have specified this in the answer to your last ask; my apologies for not addressing it then!) And I agree that Jensen and adult!Amara (Emily? I think?) could have pulled off the creepy side of their scenes well even without that backdrop; I mean, cut out that one scene, and little about the undertones of their interaction would change, if that makes sense.
And yeah, I completely understand what you're saying about Len! Like I've mentioned, it's been a bit since I saw that episode, but I remember really liking him when I did; I really appreciate that level of... I don't know if "obsession" is the right word, since that usually has a negative connotation, but... fixation? Passion? Etc. His curiosity is really endearing, and I just... I dunno, I loved his character. Your rewatch keeps reminding me of episodes/characters I liked, and I'm struggling to to say, welp, guess I'm gonna watch it all again :)
Thank you again for the ask; all the best, and until next time!

Not only does Jonathan Frakes direct a bunch of episodes, but Jeri Ryan guest stars for most of a season (while one of the actors was Off Being Pregnant), they take down a smug Brent Spiner in one episode, and the hacker in the OT3 has a nemesis in... Wil Wheaton, playing every creepy fan he's ever met.
Another one of them is repeatedly vexed by Mark Sheppard (Badger from Firefly, Crowley from Supernatural)

42) Firefly
Title- Firefly (Serenity 1x1, Shindig 1x4)
Year- 2002
Character- Badger
Synopsis- Joss Whedon writes cowboys in space.
Tumblr media
Medium- DVD
Entirety or episode?- Entirety
Overall verdict- I’ve always had a weird relationship with Firefly. I was introduced to it years ago by a really overenthusiastic fanboy of the SIT DOWN! WATCH THIS! persuasion, and my initial response was not as good as it may have been if I’d found the show under my own steam. Fast forward, and I’ve known several people who have Really. Loved. Firefly. To the point that I’ve got a bit sickened of it being constantly quoted at me. But, all that said, I went for the rewatch (because, let’s face it, Badger) and I’m really enjoying it. Firefly is very, very good. It’s a space Western, which could be cheesy af and is in fact cheesy af (with tons of delightful details like holographic saloon windows that remake themselves every time someone’s thrown through in a bar brawl). For some reason, everyone dresses like the Old West, and there’s a distinctly steampunk vibe that is totally at odds with the advanced technology, but for some reason it doesn’t matter a bit. The characterisation is phenomenal, the characters are loveable/likeable/despicable as required. The writing is fantastic, tight, excellent dialogue. The costumes, sets, everything looks gorgeous. The ‘space western’ aspect is all just tongue in cheek enough, and the comedy is actually hilarious. This is just a really wonderful, quality sci fi.
That said, and I’m only gonna say this briefly, Firefly is also intensely problematic. I have SUCH an issue with the whole ‘Companion’ thing. I think I see what they’re trying to do with it, and I am absolutely not down on sex workers, or on women who enjoy lots of casual sex, but the idea that the most valuable thing that a woman has to commodify is her body really sits awkwardly with me. I think it would perhaps have worked better if there had been male companions shown too, but you get the distinct impression that it’s a female-only trade. And despite how we’re repeatedly told that it’s a high-ranking, respected, desirable profession, we still hear Inara called a ‘whore’ repeatedly (especially by Mal, who is supposed to be her friend). There’s a lot of this kind of casual sexism in Firefly, directed against all of the female characters. I just think it’s a shame that that’s the main ‘nope’ for me in an otherwise really well-realised show. I also personally find Firefly’s diversity slightly problematic. It’s nice to see they tried, especially back in 2002 (which is not long ago, but somehow feels like ancient history in terms of representation in fiction), but whilst there’s diversity up to a point, there’s not enough and it can come across rather appropriative. They have something that could be great, with the Chinese influence on a future homogenised society, but despite that, the cast are still all mainly white and there’s not a single major character who is Chinese. It just feels off.
But all that said, it’s an excellent, well-made, fun show.
Screen time- Mark is actually in this only really briefly, but it’s worth it
Accent- Cockney
Mark’s character- Badger was the first Mark S character that I properly noticed. He’s just a lovely character design – the dialogue, the costume, he’s just entire-package gorgeous. I did forget (or perhaps repress) actually how gross Badger is, which really struck me on the rewatch (that ‘let me see your teeth’ line he opens with, ugh what) but it’s easy to handwave, with how River’s interaction humanises him later on.
There are a couple of characters that Mr S doesn’t so much play as inhabit and Badger is one of them. He just IS Badger. You can’t get much better than that. He’s played flawlessly. He’s an awful, mercurial, petty, unscrupulous small-time thug. But he’s also hilarious, charming and a survivor. He reminds me of a Jack Russell terrier and they are basically my favourite creatures on earth, so there you go.
Highlight- The music is really great, and so is the effective use of silence (so effective I actually noticed it!)
Wash playing with the dinosaurs.
Badger’s apple peeler tho.
“The wheel never stops turning.” “That only matters to the people on the rim.”
Kaylee. I feel weirdly protective over her in a way that I do not feel about many characters. Kaylee and her love for Serenity ‘my ship’s the prettiest’. Kaylee and strawberries (heartbreaking <3) Kaylee and the ugly pink dress. Kaylee charming every single dude at the ball because she actually has stuff to say. I just love her so much.
Although Jayne is frequently awful he’s undeniably hilarious and gets some great one-liners. “You only gotta scare him.” “Pain is scary?”
Most of Badger’s lines too “I got my hands on a couple” FNAR his face when he realises what he just said <3 He’s that lovely balance of smart, scary, ridiculous, pitiful and relatable that works so well in any character.
That scene between Badger and River, and Badger’s reaction to it, and his facial expressions – such pure gold.
This is a minor point but I just really like the foldaway sink/toilet design, OK?
Rewatch?- Repeatedly.

This week’s fic offering is a charming AU that places Dean and Cas in the world of Firefly. And woo-boy is it fun!
Operative Word by CMS52990
Summary:
Dean Winchester and the crew of the Impala live on the shadier side of the law, scrounging and scavenging for paychecks that seem fewer and further between. But when a mysterious man who calls himself Castiel offers cash up-front for a one-way trip to an outer planet, Dean and his crew find themselves with a bit more Alliance trouble than they had bargained for.
Is he really one of the deadly, fabled Operatives of folklore? Why do so many people want to kill him? What the hell is an Angel Tablet and why does he have it? And gorrammit, why can't Dean stop getting distracted by the asshole's eyes?
Featuring Castiel the SuperSpy, Dean the Gallant Captain, Crowley the Badger, Meg the Suicidally, Brilliantly Insane, and Sam, who is, of course, an Abomination.
I would imagine it is quite hard to mix two fandoms together. Especially two that are as distinctive as these. But this author merges the supernatural with the Firefly ‘verse seamlessly and it is quite the enjoyable read! I loved it - there is great characters, fantastic action and just enough da bianhua to let you know where you are.
You have Dean, Captain of the Impala with his rough and tumble crew: Sam, Bobby, Bela, Charlie and Meg. They all get along just as much as you’d suspect. Enter Castiel after they pull off a heist and oh boy, do the games begin. I absolutely cackled at the banter and dialogue in this fic. It’s grounded firmly in the Firefly verse while still being completely Supernatural as well. My favorite is Crowley, of course, especially since Mark Sheppard was on Firefly. It’s a nice little nod to both worlds.
The plot here is very organic and great to unfold - we have visits from Michael and Gabriel, as well as Kevin Tran. We have Castiel learning to feel for the first time in his life and we have Dean falling head over heels for him before he even realizes it. I honestly just ate this story up and it really made me want to dust off my (not really dusty) Firefly discs, so do with that what you will.
I adore Firefly, but you don’t really need to be a fan of it to enjoy this fic - that’s its greatest strength. The world sucks you in, regardless. I love getting into Dean’s motivations and thoughts here - it’s nice to see him work through stuff and also be supported by his kick ass crew. This is definitely a Supernatural story, have no fear. And it’s definitely a Dean and Castiel story.
Here’s one of my favorite exchanges that had me laughing for far too long:
The walk back to the Roadhouse went much slower without mental images of bright blue eyes and soft-looking lips to keep him company.  Dean had to settle for tormenting Sam mercilessly for the eyes he had been making at a pretty blonde medic at the Roadhouse the night before.  “Who knows,” he said, “if you’re lucky, she’ll be there tonight.  Maybe she’ll even braid your hair!”
“Shut up,” Sam grumbled.  “Anyway, you don’t see me teasing you for the eyes you’ve been making at Castiel.”
“Dunno what you’re talking about,” Dean deadpanned.
“‘Oh, Castiel, you’re so strong and interesting, and you fight so gorram good!’” Sam sing-songed in a high-pitched voice.
“That supposed to be me?”
“‘Let’s fly around the ‘verse forever together and have medically impossible babies!’”
“You’re an asshole.”
“I’m your brother.”
“Asshole brother.”
See? Great dialogue! Love to see it. Brilliant sibling feels, lol.
I give this story Five out of Five Bees for being fantastically written, and for having sexy times that are hot and finally, for being set in the Firefly ‘verse, since I still love it. 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
May I also link to a short ficlet I wrote this last weekend? For @castideans-pie and their very inviting tags/post. Some day I promise I’ll write a multi-chaptered thing and have it posted on AO3 properly, but until then… have a bit o’fluff by yours truly.
Ficlet fun - Dean whispering to the angel next to him who literally cannot sleep….
omg it’s FAN FICTION FRIDAY
Reblog and promote a fic of yours <3
