New Scotland Yard: Nothing to Live For (2.1, LWT, 1972)
"Any sign of her in there?"
"No. Odds are against it, I suppose."
"What, being there?"
"Being alive."
#new scotland yard#nothing to live for#classic tv#1972#tony hoare#bryan izzard#john woodvine#john carlisle#lynn farleigh#philip madoc#mark jones#charles morgan#raymond adamson#john peel#stephen white#peter kenton#victor harrington#john tatham#NSY's second series debuted just 3 months after the first had finished; presumably audiences still had the events of 1.13 fresh in their#minds and so not a huge amount of time is spent raking over why exactly Carlisle is in uniform and now working for the traffic unit (in old#tv cop shows‚ a fate worse than death; it makes you wonder who exactly Does work in the traffic units and why they aren't in a constant#state of furious rebellion at their apparently miserable station in life). of course things are quickly sorted out so that he's back with#old pal Woodvine... well‚ they do at least seem to find each other tolerable company here. he's been demoted to sergeant tho‚ so we'll see#if that sticks. the case of the week is a rather sad one about a dead child and the possibility that euthanasia was involved; this is#cleared up but becomes another kind of case when Madoc's grieving father snaps and grabs a gun. old fave Phil is very very good here#giving the kind of subtly moving performance he so often did. Farleigh fares less well; she's very good but this script is quite nakedly#misogynistic I'm afraid‚ with her character variously depicted as a neurotic mother in denial‚ a vengeful scorned woman or a needlessly#spiteful cuckolding wife. it's a pretty hateful bit of writing which stands out like a sore thumb compared to the empathy the script#affords Madoc and Mark Jones (as the Other Man‚ who just happens to be the late child's biological father).#particularly disappointing bc Hoare's work on the series (and on other shows like Villains) was previously so well written and nuanced

"From Her To Eternity sessions were fairly chaotic; I remember what seemed like a period of days while Nick mastered the piano part for 'Black Paul'. There was this idea in the air that nothing could be valid if it sounded like anything previously done, which was certainly Blixa's point of view. The vibe was toward the avant garde - nothing acceptable that might be construed as 'rock' music. Blixa's influence pushed this idea, and the first two Seeds records are really marked by him. I seem to recall singing vocals for 'Cabin Fever' inside a large metal box, and at another session working on a guitar part with a damaged jack input that kept giving off very high frequency noise shocks, which everyone thought was great but wasn't what I'd intended. There was a feeling of attempting to visit new and uncharted territory. It couldn't sound like the Birthday Party. We had to discover a whole new thing."

AU drabble set in season 9, because a) Mercy West forever, and b) both Jackson and April deserved to have friends they could confide in and that could have avoided us some angst.
___
He’s been an attending surgeon for a few months already, but Jackson still feels a little something when he sees his name and those of his residents class marked as lead surgeons on the OR board. Part of it is pride to have made it, part of it is just plain incredulity, like they’re all children playing pretend doctors for the day and are not old enough to be trusted with a scalpel.
“Dr. Adamson.”
Next to him in the OR, Reed Adamson, old friend and brand new ortho attending, only grunts in response to his greeting.
“Hmph.”
Reed is often gruff, so he lets it slide, but she doesn’t say one word during their whole surgery, except when she answers the interns’ questions, and that is very uncharacteristic of Reed. Two hours later, they’re scrubbing out, and she still hasn’t said one word to him.
“Okay, spit it out.”
She gives him a dirty look that makes Jackson ever more annoyed.
“What?”
Reed rolls her eyes and turns to him.
“What are you doing with April?”
“What am I doing with April?”
“I spent last night at Joe’s listening to her rant, and she didn’t talk specifically about you, but the poor girl is so confused, and we all know it’s because of you.”
“Oh really?” he says sarcastically, because the last thing he needs is for Reed to get involved in his thing with April.
“You’re acting like children, and it’s going to end badly.”
“Because you’re such an expert in relationships and human connections?”
Reed ignores him.
“I’m just saying. Don’t break her heart.”
He stops rinsing his hands and shoots his friend an incredulous look, speaking before he can stop himself.
“‘Don’t break her heart’? How about she doesn’t break mine?”
Shit.
“What?”
Reed can be pretty perceptive (when she’s not busy staring daggers at you), and he’s just given her ammunition. Great. He has to backpedal, and fast.
“I’m just saying. Her heart is not breaking, she only wants sex.”
His friend is small, but fast. In one second, she manages to roll her eyes, finish washing her hands and whack him on the back of the head.
“Ouch!”
“Jackson. Are you actually really dumb and have been hiding it the whole time?”
“What?”
“How long have you known April? Type-A, neurotic, has-a-life-plan-pinned-above-her-bed April?”
“Isn’t she supposed to be your friend?”
“You think that suddenly, she’d be chill with a no-strings attached relationship? That sex with you is so good she’d throw away her wedding scrapbook, white-picket-fence dreams? I had to teach her what ‘friends with benefits’ meant, and now you think that’s her life goal?”
“I don’t know what she thinks, okay? It’s not like we spend our time talking, you know?”
Reed’s face contorts in a grimace of disgust.
“Okay, ew, no, I don’t know, and I don’t particularly want to. Despite what April is saying, I don’t need the visuals, thank you.”
“I’m just saying, I don’t know what goes inside her head!”
“Have you tried just asking her?”
“Have you tried talking to Charles about whatever it is you have with him?”
It's a low blow, but he's ready to try anything to change the subject.
“Leave me and Charlie out of it. Grow a pair and talk to her. We used to never be able to shut the both of you up. What happened?”
What happened is feelings, very, very big feelings, feelings he’s not sure he’s ready to handle yet, because in his experience, people you love tend to leave after a while, and why would he put his heart in the hands of someone with the power to crush it?
Reed still seems annoyed with him, like she can’t believe her best friends can be so clueless, but seems to soften.
“You’re not teenagers anymore. I know you’re both afraid to ruin the friendship or whatever, but you’re going to have to talk about it sooner or later. Sooner would be better.”
Jackson sighs and passes a hand on his face.
“I know, I know. Thank you.”
Reed bends her legs in a mock curtsy, and he suddenly remembers something she said.
“Wait, April has been talking about me? What did she–”
“Talk to her, Avery!”

Here's a damn fine solid amount of all the different kinds of media that I think both can definitely fit well in and could legit share the same universe as what is in my opinion one of the best trilogies ever made, Gore Verbinski's Pirates Of The Caribbean Trilogy, which you can both read and see below for yourself right about here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
• Jon Turteltaub's National Treasure Duology
• Stephen Sommers' The Mummy (1999)
• John Carpenter's Big Trouble In Little China

Why Him
Summary: “I get he’s intelligent, but I still wonder why you, of all people Jack, have a civilian on your team. Especially one who is so easily distracted.”
Author’s Note: I wrote this a long time ago and just tweaked it slightly.
Enjoy.
                             *********************************************
“Daniel.”
Jack frowned as his friend didn’t move from staring at the pad of paper on the table in front of him.
“Daniel,” he tried again, seeing the members of SG5 all roll their eyes when he still received no answer.
Finally, Jack reached over and tugged the pad slightly making Daniel look up a question in his eyes.
“Are we boring you?” Jack asked, his smile filled with the sarcasm he’d managed to keep out of his voice.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed just slightly, but he didn’t make whatever comment Jack knew was flying through his mind.
“Sorry,” he said instead, pushing his hair back from his face, “I was thinking about the markings Lieutenant Johnsons was describing they’d found. If I’m right, they may be the same as the ones we found on Ernest’s planet and P3X C67.”
Jack frowned slightly, trying to remember the planet from its designation.
“The planet of the aggressive squirrel,” Daniel clarified for his friend, before adding to the four members of SG5, “You had to be there.”
Jack chuckled slightly at the memory before pulling himself back to the meeting, “So, you think it’s worth sending another team?”
Daniel nodded, “Definitely.”
“Any suggestions who from your department is ready to go offworld?” Jack asked.
“Dr Adamson,” Daniel replied instantly, “She’s been training with SG9 for the past three months and is keeping up with them.”
“Excellent,” Jack told him, “I’ll talk to Hammond when he gets back, and we’ll arrange the mission. SG5, dismissed.”
~
Jack stretched, watching as Daniel grabbed his files and pad of paper before he headed back to work.
“Something wrong, Gordon?” Jack asked the leader of SG5 who was still sitting there looking bemused.
“I get he’s intelligent,” Mike Gordon noted, “But I still wonder why you, of all people Jack, have a civilian on your team. Especially one who is so easily distracted.”
Jack chuckled; he’d been asked this question by several of the military personnel he’d brought into the SGC.
“Daniel isn’t just smart,” Jack told his old friend, “Underneath all that hair is one of the sharpest minds you will ever come across, who soaks in information and can make intuitive leaps like no one I’ve ever met. And be thankful that he can occasionally be distracted because, in all honesty, I think if he really wanted to Daniel could take over the world.”
Mike chuckled, “Seriously?”
“You’re talking about a man who manages to make friends on almost every planet we visit,” Jack continued, “Its kinda scary sometimes.”
Mike nodded and started out, pausing he turned back to Jack, “Is it true he got married without knowing?”
Jack smiled slightly, “It’s true. And she’s another one who could take over the world if she really wanted.”
“Really?” Mike asked.
“Smart, beautiful,” Jack listed before adding, “And started a rebellion against the creature her people had worshipped as a god for several thousand years because he’d grabbed Daniel. Someone she’d known all of a day by that point,” Jack clapped the other man on the shoulder, “The one thing you need to remember about the geeks is be afraid, be very afraid.”

On this day... - May 21st
On this day Led Zeppelin performed:
+ 1977 : The Summit in Houston, Texas, USA
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Led Zeppelin – At the Summit – Saturday Night. If that sounds like a combination of the Hindenburg disaster and Black Sunday, rolled into one, you’ve got it right on the mark.  It was a rough and raunchy crowd that perfectly matched the band’s music. […] The band supplied excruciatingly loud, distorted, blues-derived, but hardly traceable rock and if things eased down, as they did during the band’s newly incorporated “acoustic set” and Jones’ keyboard solo, there were always the old laser beams, explosions, flash pots, dry ice fog and – the oldest trick in the book – spotlights on mirrored crystal balls. The band’s set has changed considerably since the tour that resulted in the film and album The Song Remains the Same, but the music is just as excessive.” – ‘Mass hysteria at Zeppelin concert’ by D. Adamson (Chronicle)

Launch of Space Shuttle Columbia from Launch Complex 39B, during STS-28. August 8, 1989.
STS-28 was a dedicated Department of Defense mission, deploying the USA-40 and USA-41 satellites. While the mission details are still classified, it is believed that USA-40 was the first SDS-2 relay communications satellite used by the United States military. USA-41 was likely COBRA BRASS, a satellite designed to demonstrate the use multi-spectral, fast-framing, staring sensor technology for use in missile detection. This mission also carried the Shuttle Lee-side Temperature Sensing infrared camera package. Mounted in a pod on top of the vertical stabilizer, the camera would measure the thermodynamic conditions of the Shuttle during reentry. The SILTS pod was only installed on Columbia and served as a distinguishing feature.

On April 26th 1826 Robert Adamson, the pioneering photographer was born.
Robert Adamson was born in St Andrews, one of ten children, and grew up in Burnside, the son of Alexander Adamson, a Fife farmer and his wife, Rachael Melville. He was educated at Madras College in St Andrews where he showed exceptional talents in mathematics and mechanics, twice winning the prize for mathematics. He became employed at an engineering shop from a young age, and apprenticed as a millwright for several months.
He was keen on becoming an engineer, but ill health led to him pursuing photography and was taught calotype by his eldest brother, John, and by the physicist David Brewster of the University of St Andrews in the late 1830s. As early as April 1839, Adamson’s talents were recognized, and Fox Talbot, the inventor of the calotype. Adamson’s brother John, a general practitioner, lecturer, and curator of the University Museum, produced the first calotype in Scotland in 1841. John’s family home is marked by a blue plaque at 127 South Street; it was at one time the Post Office for St Andrews and is now a restaurant (‘The Adamson’).
He established his photographic studio at Rock House, Calton Hill, Edinburgh in 1843, not long after David Brewster recommended Adamson to David Octavius Hill , a painter of romantic Scottish landscapes, who hired him and they were commissioned in that year to make a group portrait of the 470 clergymen who founded the Free Church of Scotland. Hill had desired to make photographic portraits of the founders purely as reference material. The painting would not be completed until 1866, long after his death.
Over the next few years many famous people came to the Edinburgh studios to have their photographs taken. They also took photographs of ordinary working people in their own surroundings and also took many photographs of Edinburgh and further afield.
By 1947 Robert’s health was deteriorating and he returned to St Andrews, dying on 14th January 1848.
Adamson and Hill left a great legacy in the photographs they took, I have admired them and posted them many times over the years, I am sure a good few of you out there will recognise a lot of their photographs without knowing the origins.
The house where their studio was is still there, it is now a holiday let.
