Today I find wisdom in the Psalm.
In Exodus 27, we have an interesting historical lesson about how the Altar of Burnt Offering was designed.
In Mark 11 we see Jesus, aware that He must die on the cross, deliberately putting the Pharisees on the spot. They ask Him what gives Him the authority to preach and do miracles. Rather than simply saying that it was God, He makes them squirm by asking who gave John the Baptist authority to baptize. They can't say it was man without upsetting the people of Jerusalem, and if they say it was God, they will have to admit that they deliberately got in God's way. So they go for the copout - Uh, I dunno. And Jesus says that He will not tell them where He got His authority. He knows they are coming for him. He's going to make sure their hypocrisy is obvious to all before they do.
Psalm 77 - The Psalmist is having a hard time and wants to know why God has removed His favor from them. As my husband is out of work right now and my father's health is failing him, I feel a little bit like the psalmist. But then the psalmist remembers that God is powerful, holy and eternal. We are wise to give thanks for our blessing rather than whining because things have gone wrong.

“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.’”

Jesus the King (Mark 11:1-11)
The power of Love will overcome any and every earthly power.
Entry Into the City, by John August Swanson (1938-2021) As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The…

Still not over the fact that Gwen had this horrible, traumatizing experience and then she comes to work and suddenly out of the blue it seems as though Alice is being nice to her? And Gwen is so stunned at the idea that Alice remembered her and did this considerate thing for her? But then in reality we all know it was just an accident?
Definitely not over the fact that you can hear the moment where Gwen breaks and that vulnerability comes through. But then not a minute later Celia shows up and Gwen remembers that she's not supposed to show weakness - that's not something she's allowed and so that's not something she will do. The snap and shift broke me.

Probably my favorite verse :)
But check this out:
The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.
15 On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16 and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. 17 And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’[a]? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’[b]”
18 The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.

Two of our lessons today take place at the Temple.
Exodus 26 - God gives Moses the blueprints for the Tabernacle that the Jews used as a worship place when they were in the Wilderness. The instructions are intricate and exact, illuminating the idea that this most holy place deserves to be treated with great care.
Mark 11 - In stark contrast, when Jesus enters the Temple in Jerusalem he finds moneychangers getting rich by charging people money for the sacrifices they must make in the temple. The emphasis is not on worship, but on profit, so he cracks a whip and turns the whole place upside down. When we see people who seem to be more interested in money than in God's word, we would do well to remember the moneychangers. I am not a big fan of prosperity gospel.
Psalm 76 - Another song of thanksgiving for military victory.

The Question of Authority (Mark 11:27-33)
Speaking truth to power while not becoming defensive doing so is a tricky art.
The Pharisees Question Jesus, by James Tissot (1836-1902) Again they entered Jerusalem. As Jesus was walking through the Temple area, the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders came up to him. They demanded, “By what authority are you doing all these things? Who gave you the right to do them?” “I’ll tell you by what authority I do these things if you answer one…
