Best of 2023 - Part 1

So, last year I posted my best-of-2022 list on this Tumblr page after some non Facebook minded listeners asked me about it, and this time I'm being proactive so here it is, my best records and gigs of 2023, starting with the records that were released in 2023 - 13 to 7 + best compilations/reissues. With YouTube clips or Bandcamp links if available.

13. Loopsel: Öga For Öga : Eye For An Eye (DFA - Mammas Mysteriska Jukebox) - Loopsel is Elin from Monokultur and from Skiftande Enheter and this is her second full lenght, more song oriented than ever. If you like old 4AD stuff or, more recent, Treasury Of Puppies. Very beautiful.

12. Nusidm: The Last Temptation Of Thrill (Bruit Direct Disques) - This is a record that I'm still trying to understand. Wait, do you have to understand a record? No, of course not. It's the weirdest loud record of the year to me, somehow similar to early Liars records but yet so different, from a member of Cured Pink and Kitchen's Floor.

11. Exek: The Map And The Territory (Foreign Records) - return to form from one of the bands that is played A LOT on De Algemene Verwarring, last year they were in the "best of the rest" list but I have to admit that they kind of bored me a bit with their last records, but the new one is really really good.

10. Soccer Committee: ❤/ lamb (Morctapes) - This is the most beautiful silent and quiet record of the year. Soccer Committee is Mariska Baars from the Netherlands and it's her second release on Ghent based label Morctapes.

9. Children Maybe Later: What A Flash Kick! (Sloth Mate Productions) - Heard this for the first time on the Dynamite Hemorrhage podcast and immediately put it on my want list. No surprise I finally picked it up in the excellent Paris record shop Pop Culture. It's quiet songs about cats and about Jane Birkin and it's great.

8. Lewsberg: Out And About (Self-released) - Best Dutch band definitely. Ok, Tramhaus is nice too, but they haven't got the output yet that Lewsberg has, and every release is high quality. Bit bummed that I missed them live this year.

7. Blod: Ondskans Frö (Self-released) - Well it can't get much more DIY than this can it? Self-released, solo recordings, self made covers and maybe even one of the best Blod releases so far. Also, it's about the last day on earth, but let's hope that does not prevent Blod from making more albums.

Piiptsjilling - "in spoar" CD

Since 2008, Mariska Baars (vocals, guitar), Jan Kleefstra (words), Romke Kleefstra (guitars, bass), and Rutger Zuydervelt (electronics) have been creating improvised soundscapes with Frisian poetry. ‘in spoar’ is their sixth album.

Recorded at the St. Thomas church, Ketlik, 30 September 2022 and in Kekerdom, June 2023

In celebration of #PianoDay2020, I would like to share this months edition of Into the Night. I had originally mixed this for the Copenhagen Piano Days event (after being approached by said event), which got canceled due to the Coronavirus Outbreak. Nevertheless, the mix was finished and appeared on FriskyRadio on March 15. For piano days, this mix serves as a nice mix of piano music with the occasional ambient and modern classical piece. I hope you will enjoy it. The link is beneath the picture.
